Simple Past - Review
Form:
1. Base V + -ed
He walked home from work.
(walk is a regular verb)
OR
2. An irregular verb form:
He drove home from work.
(drive is an irregular verb)

Vocabulary – Verb Review
Regular verb:
A regular verb is one that forms its simple
past tense and its past participle by adding "-
ed" or "-d" to the base form of the verb.
Examples:

The simple past is used:
to talk about a completed past action.
I emailed my boss.
I saw the weather change.
These are short action verbs.

The past progressive is used:
to emphasize a long action that was:
• in the past
• lasted for some time
• is now completed
Examples:
He​ was studying all night.
She was chopping vegetables for a salad.

Form:
1. was/were + -ing V
I was watching the sunset.
Note: we use:
• was for: I, he, she, it, singular count nouns, non-count nouns
• were for: you, we, they, plural count nouns).

Most often, however, the past
progressive is used in these 2 ways:

1. To talk about a long (past) action being
interrupted by a short (past) action: (use
“when”)
Examples:
I was studying when my friend called me.
They were singing in the hall when the alarm
rang.

At 9:00 am:
The students were
studying.
At 10:00 am:
The power went out.
Past Progressive: 2 functions
2. To talk about 2 long (past) actions happening
at the same time (use “while”):
Examples:
The children were watching TV while their parents
were talking.
The children watched TV while their parents
talked.
He was doing his homework while she was
playing a video game.
He did his homework while she played a video
game.

Use when with a short past action.

  • 3. Simple Past - Review Form: 1. Base V + -ed He walked home from work. (walk is a regular verb) OR 2. An irregular verb form: He drove home from work. (drive is an irregular verb) 3
  • 4. Vocabulary – Verb Review Regular verb: A regular verb is one that forms its simple past tense and its past participle by adding "- ed" or "-d" to the base form of the verb. Examples: 4

  • 11. Past Progressive Form: 1. was/were + -ing V I was watching the sunset. Note: we use: • was for: I, he, she, it, singular count nouns, non-count nouns • were for: you, we, they, plural count nouns). 11

  • 15. Past Progressive: 2 main functions Most often, however, the past progressive is used in these 2 ways: 15
  • 16. Past Progressive: 2 main functions 1. To talk about a long (past) action being interrupted by a short (past) action: (use “when”) Examples: I was studying when my friend called me. They were singing in the hall when the alarm rang. 16
  • 17. Past Progressive 17 At 9:00 am: The students were studying. At 10:00 am: The power went out.
  • 18. Past Progressive: 2 functions 2. To talk about 2 long (past) actions happening at the same time (use “while”): Examples: The children were watching TV while their parents were talking. The children watched TV while their parents talked. He was doing his homework while she was playing a video game. He did his homework while she played a video game. 18
