A preposition is a word that connects nouns,
pronouns and phrases to other words in a
sentence.
A preposition is used before a noun, pronoun, or
gerund (a verb that functions as a noun) to show
place (prepositions of place), time (prepositions
of time), or direction (prepositions of movement).

words such as on, between, and other prepositions
of place;
and
expressions such as around the corner from, across
from, that show the location of an object.
They are commonly used when giving directions.”

There is a common sentence form for using prepositions
of direction:
“The (noun) is (preposition of direction) the
(noun).”
Like this:
The cat is beside the fireplace.

“There are many ways to give someone directions in English.
The verbs walk, go, and head are common and have the same
meaning.”
Walk up main street for two blocks.
Go up main street for two blocks.
Head up main street for two blocks.

Go one and a half blocks down Main Street.
Head up Main Street to the corner, turn left and
then go half a block.
