2. Raster Graphics
• Give a definition of Raster Graphics
Raster graphics are made up of bitmaps. Bitmaps are graphics
made up of pixels. Each tiny pixel contains one colour. The
smaller the pixels the better quality the image. When you
enlarge the image it can lead the image to distortion. This is due
to stretching the pixels.
Mega pixels is the amount of pixels that are in the images you
are taking, for example a camera is 14 megapixels, 14 megapixels
is 14,000,000.
When getting a picture of the internet, sometimes it can go
pixelated. This is because it has been compressed into less mega
pixels.
3. Vector Graphics
• Give a definition of Vector Graphics
Vector graphics are made of vectors. Its also known as paths and strokes.
Vectors are defined by start and end points, with curves, points and angles
between them. From this, the vector can become a triangle, a line, a square
or a curvy shape.
Vectors can be scaled small or big as vectors
have no loss in definition. This is perfect for
company logos. This could be for a small
business card or a huge billboard.
5. JPEG
Stands For Joint photographic experts group.
Used For/Example JPEG can be used in everything from
Facebook, Photoshop and phones. JPEG is
universal it was created to be used on
everything so we wouldn’t have loads of
different files for different things and
software.
Advantage The advantages are that you can use them
for everything for example you make a
cartoon character in Photoshop and you
want to put it into a power point, you
would save it as a JPEG and insert the
image in to powerpoint.
Disadvantage When you crop a JPEG the quality looks
pixelated be cause JPEG is a raster.
6. TIFF
Stands For Tagged image file format
Used For/Example Its used for desktop publishing its very
popular for graphic designers. They will
use it so create magazine covers.
Advantage TIFF files can save multi-page documents
to a single TIFF file.
Disadvantage TIFF file size is big when it hasn’t been
compressed into a JPEG. This causes
problems when sending TIFF files through
Email.
7. GIF
Stands For Graphics interchange format
Used For/Example GIFs are used fro short digital animations.
GIFs are used a lot on Facebook, for when
you are communicating with other users.
Advantage An advantage is that it can be looped so if
you missed the short animation It will
keep looping so you can see it again.
Disadvantage GIF files are very low quality and they are
not very professional.
8. BMP
Stands For Bitmap image file
Used For/Example Bitmap files are similar to TIFF and JPEG.
Advantage There is no loss in compression, so you
images will look good when they have
been compressed no distortion
Disadvantage A down side is that it has a large file size.
This will cause problems when sending
emails.
10. PSD
Stands For Photoshop Document
Used For/Example Photoshop files are used by graphic
designers, game designers, photographers
and artists. Photoshop is used for image
manipulation and front covers for
magazines.
Advantage PSDs save layers, swatches, page
formatting etc. it also supports
transparency.
Disadvantage PSDs are very large as they store lots of
layers. This then makes it hard when
Emailing files.
11. AI
Stands For Adobe illustrator art
Used For/Example Its used to create logos for company's. This
is because of its high quality and the fact
that you can resizes without distortion.
Advantage It can be scaled big with no distortion.
Disadvantage The file size is large. This will cause
problems when emailing. Also the file can
only be used in adobe illustrator if you
wanted to use it somewhere else you will
have to change it to JPEG.
12. FLA
Stands For Flash file
Used For/Example Flash files are used to create animation
and games.
Advantage Flash files can produce high quality files
with a small file size. Flash files can also
include sound and video.
Disadvantage Flash is always updating and its very
irritating and time consuming.
13. WMF
Stands For Windows metafile
Used For/Example Windows metafiles are similar to AI files.
They are used for logos for company's.
Advantage Images can be scaled big and small. This is
because vectors for no loss in quality. It
can also contain bitmap and vector
components.
Disadvantage The file size is quite large, this causes
problems with emails. Also if you wanted
to open the file somewhere else you cant
you will have to change it to JPEG
15. Compression
Definition Compression happens when you are
making a file smaller for more storage, if
you are changing a file to a JPEG to put
into another software. To make all the
layers into one big layer. The lower the
compression the higher the quality. The
higher the compression the lower the
quality.
Advantage Compression is good for when you want
to change the file or make it smaller.
Disadvantage The down side to all this is: images can
become more pixelated as they are
compressed as they save smaller amounts
of coloured squares each time.
16. Image Capture
Method Scanner
A scanner is used to copy a physical copy
of a picture, sketch, or mixed media
products.
The scanner, scans over the image and
turns it into a digital copy on your
computer.
Method Camera
A camera is used to capture images. You can take a picture of anything you
want, it could be for anything for example:
a model for a magazine.
Method Graphics Tablet
A graphics tablet is used to control the
mouse by a pen to you can draw with
precision.
You could use this for art, graphics game
design etc.
17. Optimising
Why would you optimise? You would optimise to reduce the file size
for the internet. You would do this
because its faster to see the image. If you
didn’t optimise the file will be to large
and it will take to long to see.
How can you optimise? You can optimise your images by going
into Photoshop and changing the image
size to no more then 500 pixels wide.
Advantage to optimising The upside to this is that you images load
up faster on the internet.
Disadvantage to optimising The downside is that the image isn’t at its
best quality.
19. File Size
What could affect a Working Scale
(Photoshop) document file size?
The more layers you use the bigger the
file size will be.
How could you reduce the file size of a
Working Scale document without
affecting quality?
You could compress the image into a JPEG
as it reduces the file size because it puts all
the layers in the one big layer.
What is an advantage of scaling up images
before exporting?
What is a disadvantage of scaling up
images before exporting?
20. File Naming Conventions
What naming conventions could you use
when creating your video game assets?
• You would need to name your game
assets to make sure you know what it
is you are opening. When making a
character for game there will be lots of
different files for that one character
this is because you will have a picture
of the front, back and sides. You will
need to accurately name them
because you wont want to lose that
certain part of that sprite.
Why is it a good idea to accurately name
your assets?
It’s a good idea because you will want to
keep a good indication of what its what.
21. Asset Management
Why would you use folders when storing
your assets?
You would use folders to organise all your
different assets, for example you would
have one folder for one character, the
front, back and sides. I would name that
folder with all these different assets in as
the name as the character.
