Iconic 90s Rave Scene Brought Joy and Unity Through Dance Music
1. 90s Rave article:
The 90s raves were the most Iconic times for dance music and the
club scene. Back in the day the raves brought joy to young adults all
up the country. At the time Britain’s youth was put under lots of
pressureto get good jobs, due to Margaret Thatcher’s right wing
styleways; it was worse off for the poor and the rich was getting
richer.Thatcher’s restraints on Britain gotbroken in the summer of
1989 as a new underground acid housescene blew up on a huge
scale!
The rave scene was defined by a new look, new sound and a new
drug. The drug ecstasy better known as,Gary’s,pills,E’s etc. was
massively used atthe events. The drug brought people together in
one bigunity and everyone justhad a laugh and Danced. The drug
releases lots of happy endorphins so there were lets fights due to
people not drinkingand being aggressive. Hooligans used to turn
up to the events and put their differences aside and itreduced a lot
of fights. This was due to the new-found drug ecstasy and because
of the lovingatmosphere in the rave.
How Raves where set up
Raves used to be a hassleto set up and attend. Firstly, the
organisers will find a location,this may include:abandoned
warehouse, barns, abandoned buildings, empty fields and so on.
Once the organisers havefound the location, they will need to set
up all the pretty lights and find a DJ. Sinceall the party goers are
going to be dancingall nightand takingdrugs, they will need good
music and good lights to keep them happy and entertained. After
you set up your rave you need people to find out about it. You
would go about this by providinga phone number you can ring at a
telephone box and you then you inform the raver the placeand the
time. If you couldn’tget a hold of a number, you could driveabout
lookingfor disco lights or look for people travelingin cars with
obvious raveclothes on and followthem. People used to drive up
the M25 and look for lasers to help them find the rave. Another
thing you have to think about is the police.Ravers used to use
2. Decoy lorries to drawthe policeaway from the real event. Police
also cutphone lines so ravers had to use privet radios.Ravers used
back up venues also in caseof any issues atthe original spot.
The Fashion
The fashion in raves was all aboutbrightcolours,Psychedelic
patterns and flared pants! If you look at the fashion atraves itis
quite random but colourful and itwas all aboutpeople expressing
themselves.
Rave styles by the late 1990’s was influenced by LA’s roots in hip-
hop culture. Adidas shoes and bell bottoms became a wardrobe
staplealongwith cropped baby doll shirts.Adidas isoneof the
many brands that got worn. Hooligans used to turn up to raves
dressed in stone island, 2-piecetrack suits and Adidas trainers.
