2. Raster Graphics
• Give a definition of Raster Graphics
Raster graphics are a type of digital graphic that
are made up of bitmaps, these bitmaps are then
made up of pixels, these pixels each record the
colour information that make up the sections of
the image, the pixels are fixed in place so when
resizing an image, distortion of the image will
occur.
3. Vector Graphics
• Give a definition of Vector Graphics
Vector graphics are the other type of digital graphics,
these are made up of vectors or also known as paths and
strokes, these paths all have a start and end point, as well
as points, curves and angles between them. This allows
the paths to become a number of things whether that be
a straight line, triangle or even a curvy shape. Vectors
differ from raster graphics as they can be resized with
losing any definition, making them ideal to be used in
Logos for organisations, by allowing the image logo to
either be huge or tiny depending on how they want their
logo presented.
5. JPEG
Stands For Joint Photographic Experts Group
Used For/Example JPEG’s are used globally and are very
common, one of the most common being
used to format images on social
networking sites.
Advantage JPEG’s have a very small file size which
means they are compressed down so that
more memory space can be saved when
storing a large amount.
Disadvantage JPEG’s lose image quality the longer they
are stored, every time the file is opened
and closed bits of data are lost due to the
compression and decompression of the
file.
6. TIFF
Stands For Tagged Image File Format
Used For/Example Commonly found in work done by graphic
designers and desktop publishing.
Advantage In Adobe InDesign TIFF files can be used to
save multiple page documents to a single
TIFF file. They also have the option of
lossless compression which means image
quality isn’t lost when opening files.
Disadvantage TIFF files size can be very large meaning
that computer memory can by taken up
quickly if a large amount of TIFF files are
saved.
7. GIF
Stands For Graphics Interchange Format
Used For/Example GIF’s are used for short digital animations
which are made up of a series of pictures
that have been looped to appear like a
video. They are very commonly used on
the internet.
Advantage GIF’s can be used as a replacement for
videos as they have a much smaller files
size then a video meaning less space is
taken up.
Disadvantage The quality of the animations are far from
normal videos and may appear stuttered
or jumpy.
8. BMP
Stands For Bitmap image file
Used For/Example
Advantage There is no loss in compression with BMP
documents so when opening BMP files
image quality remains intact.
Disadvantage BMP files have a rather large file size
meaning much more space is taken up
when storing them, they can also be
troubling to send to people as the file size
can be to big for email, especially if there
is a number of them being sent.
10. PSD
Stands For Photoshop Document
Used For/Example Photoshop documents are used for image
manipulation, meaning they can be found
on front covers for magazines or posters.
Advantage A photoshop document allows you to save
a number of layers to your photo allowing
you to edit and manipulate original
images.
Disadvantage They are a type of vector digital graphics
which means that they have a large file
size.
11. AI
Stands For Adobe Illustrator Art
Used For/Example They can be used commonly for logo
design and creation or graphics to
represent a company/organisation.
Advantage When changing the scale of an AI file there
is no loss of definition in the image as it is
a vector graphic.
Disadvantage To view an AI file it requires specialist
software specifically for the document,
this can prove to open which limits where
it can be viewed.
12. FLA
Stands For Flash File
Used For/Example Flash files are mainly used to create
animations and games
Advantage Flash files are handing in creating high
quality files containing an animation or
game and still have a small file size. Flash
files can also include video and sound.
Disadvantage A limited amount of software can open a
FLA file as it is a specialist file.
13. WMF
Stands For Windows Metafile
Used For/Example Similar to AI files windows metafiles are
also used in logo design and creation,
clipart is an example of this.
Advantage As they are similar to AI files they are
useful in being able to be scaled larger or
smaller and still remain exact same
definition.
Disadvantage A WMF is only available on windows
platforms.
15. Compression
Definition lossy compression is the way file sizes are
reduced by reducing the amount of
information that is saved.
Advantage This is the method in which files sizes are
reduced to conserve save space.
Disadvantage The higher the compression of the file the
more pixelated the image becomes.
16. Image Capture
Method Scanner
How is it used for image capture of
graphics
An existing image or object Is placed on
the scanner facing down, the top is closed
an the object or image is scanned and
uploaded to a computer or printed.
Method Camera
How is it used for image capture of
graphics
Cameras are used to captured light going
inside them and reflecting the chosen
image onto a light sensitive scanner which
then instantly presents it digitally to view.
Method Graphics Tablet
How is it used for image capture of
graphics
Tablets are used similar to painting
canvases, however digitally, a mouse is
controlled like a pen which allows users to
create illustrations.
17. Optimising
Why would you optimise? when uploading an image to the internet
optimising it beforehand ensures the
image is easing viewing on the web.
How can you optimise? You can use Adobe Photoshop to optimise
an image by selecting image size and
changing it. This can involve reducing
image size, reducing bit depth or reducing
resolution.
Advantage to optimising Images that have been optimised have a
smaller file size then files that haven’t
been optimised which means downloads
when opening the website take longer.
Disadvantage to optimising Compression causes images to lose quality
and appear more pixelated because less
pixels are saved each time the file is
compressed.
19. File Size
What could affect a Working Scale
(Photoshop) document file size?
With PSD files it allows you to add multiple
layers to an image, so if an image has a
high amount of layers then the file size will
be increased.
How could you reduce the file size of a
Working Scale document without
affecting quality?
A document with a large file size can be
reduced by compressing the file, this
makes it smaller by compressing the files
information down by saving less
information.
What is an advantage of scaling up images
before exporting?
The advantage of this is more detail can be
seen within the image.
What is a disadvantage of scaling up
images before exporting?
The size of the file increases when the
image is scaled up.
20. File Naming Conventions
What naming conventions could you use
when creating your video game assets?
I will ensure that my work is organised
efficiently so that it makes it easier for me
to locate work. I will have a file for the
pages and a file for the extra work on
Photoshop so my work dose not get
confusing, In Photoshop I will name the
layers so I know what layer marks what
element on my PSD document.
Why is it a good idea to accurately name
your assets?
Name your assets is helpful as it allows
you to organise your work better and
ensure you don’t have any files unnamed
making it easier to locate certain files.
21. Asset Management
Why would you use folders when storing
your assets?
It is important to use folders to organise
your work as it means you can segregate
work in to specific areas and keep work
that’s related to one another together.
What folders would you create and what
would you save within them
To create I folder in my documents it
involves right clicking and selecting new
folder once done I can then name the
folder and move whatever work I want
into that folder, for example this section of
my course is print so I can create its own
folder to store all my print documents
inside.
