2. Station demographics
The name of the radio station is ‘nerd FM’ and is
focused on a target audience of “nerds”- people with an
interest in movies,comics,video games,books and
music.
The radio station is relevant to these interests but mainly
focused on a target audience of gamers, gaming, the
gaming circuit and gaming community with a focus on
the niche audience of ‘retro’.
The demographic for the focused audience would be in
the age range fo late teens to mid 30’s market (16-30)
as the age for gaming and retro gaming is wide.
Also a demographic of a male orientated gender with a
small demographic of a female gender.
There would also be a regional Geo-demographic
for the station.
The socio-economic groups relevant to the radio station
are generally groups C2,D,E as it is usually these types
of people in these groups who would be interested in
the main themes of the radio station.
3. Station psychographics
The psychographics for the radio station would be;
Achievers,strivers,experiencers and makers as these
psychographics are based around achievement and self-expression
which is a major part in the focused target
audience of gaming in such ways as ‘achievement hunters’-
people who strive to 100% video games and the
psychographic of self-expression with such game genres like
RPG’s (role playing games) and MMORPG’s (mass
multiplayer online role playing games) to create and express
oneself through the role of a character.
These psychographics also link to the ‘uses and gratifications
theory’ in which media is used to provide gratifications and to
satisfy needs. The radio station’s themes (nerd
culture/gaming/retro gaming) links to this theory and the
second and fourth uses in the theory’s four main uses.
The second use in the theory is ‘personal relationships-our
need to interact with other people’. This use relates the the
radio station and its themes as the groups for this use desire
to create virtual relationships, these relationships
could be for with presenters on the radio or people who are
interested in the same things in which the radio shares it’s
themes.
The fourth use in the theory is ‘Diversion-the need to escape,
entertainment and relaxation’. This links to the themes of the
radio as the ‘nerd culture’ and the focused theme for the
target audience of gaming will relate to this use as interests in
the radio’s themes and the focused gaming audience use the
same interests of the radio station such as movies, comics
and gaming for the fourth use ‘Diversion-the need for escape,
entertainment and relaxation’.
