2. Dear John I really like the two different colours used for the title of the film. The credit block has a slightly unusual layout. It is aligned to the left and is slightly longer that most. It also starts further up the poster than usual. The main image is of a couple suggesting romance. It is also set on a beach, an icon of summer romances. The two a list stars are near the top of the poster following convention of having the bigger stars name first.
3. Never Let Me Go This is a long shot of two people running along a pier. It either suggests they are excited about something or are running away from something but because we cannot see their faces we cannot tell. This gives the poster ambiguity. Also the Title of the film Never Let Me Go suggests ambiguity as the audience don’t know who or what should not be let go of. The colours of the poster have been subdues and look faded, like a memory. The composition of the image is very symmetrical.
4. Bridget Jones’s Diary The main image is of 3 people, the main characters. One would asume the main character is the lady in the middle and the two men on either sides are her love interests. The bottom of the picture looks as though it has been ripped out of a book/diary. Supporting the theme that the film is about Bridget’s diary. At the bottom the sell line says it is from the same makers of FW, a british rom com therefore suggesting that this film is of the same genre and people who watched FW will like this movie too. Bridget uses a direct mode of address and so does Hugh Grant but Colin Firth does not, he is peering into the diary. Bridget also has a coy smile on her face.
5. Atonement This is a very good poster and I like the two split images. The top image is of James Mcavoy as a soldier in a battlefield and the lower image is of Kiera Knightly in a meadow of poppies. There is a clear difference in ambience and atmosphere in the two images. The title of the film is on a middle banner. The font used for the poster is similar to that of a type writer and follows one of the themes in the film. The names of the celebrities are in red, reflecting the red poppies and the blood of war. The two different images suggest two different times and perhaps two different narratives, one in the war and one in the years after the war. Both characters look very sad which would suggest an event took place to upset them. The top image is very dark and moody and shows iconic images of war. The bottom however is softer and uses warmer colours, it also shows poppies, which are an icon of the war being over.
