Your product could be in any style or genre but it
must be self financed through sales or advertising.
You must also produce your magazine for a
specified audience segment within the 16 to 25 age
group.
3. Meeting the Brief
In order to meet this brief, I will do the following.
Create a magazine which fulfils the socioeconomic group the
audience of the Northern Echo is. (ABC1).
Create a magazine which fits under the genre of
“Technology/Gaming” and make it suitable for an audience of 16-
25.

of the Northern Echo are used to, through employed high quality
staff.
Making sure the Magazine is self financed through
advertisements.
4. Why Technology?
Technology/Gaming is something I have always had a
keen interest in.
I have a broad knowledge in Technology due to when
growing up having a huge interest in it.
Not many other Technology magazines look at real
issues that are problematic for gamers, where-as mine
does.
I am able to connect with my target audience better due
to my knowledge of the technology/gaming industry, as I
am just like them with the same interests.
5. How big is the
Technology/Gaming
Genre?
Many technology/gaming magazines on the market…
Some examples being Wired, PC Gamer, Game
Informer, Games Radar to name a few.
The technology industry is huge at the moment with
new content/products created more frequently. i.e.
Games being released almost every month.
The readership for PC Gamer Magazine estimated at
453,000 adults at the end of June 2011.

the gaming/technology industry such as Developers or

well researched.
8. Constraints
The Press Complaints
Commission
The PCC (Press Complaints Commission) states a
number of rules of which journalists must oblige to in
the aid to protect others. This includes subjects such
as harassment, children, discrimination and
accuracy.
In order to stick by these rules and not violate them,
here are 5 golden rules created to make sure.
9. The 5 Rules
I will contact any parent(s)/guardian(s) if any children are to be
involved to get consent, to protect any intrusion of their lives.
All pictures will be taken by myself in order to not violate any
copyright laws.
If information gathered is under copyright laws, I will seek the
permission of the person holding them.
All interviews will be recorded to ensure the accuracy of them.
All Material I collect and intend to publish that is intended to be
published which involves a certain individual I will consult them
before-hand to make sure they have no problems with it.
10. Focus Group Feedback
After explaining the idea of the magazine to a few
people, some quotes I got back were:
“Sounds like a new and different idea.”
“It can definitely look at things differently than what
other magazines offer.”
“The arguments should be balanced, pros and cons.”
“These topics would be very helpful to the readers.”

19. Mock Up 1 Feedback
Positives
The colours used, red being a connotation of anger/stress.
Imagery used was commented on, acting from model was believable.
Distorted font used fit well with the article and what it was about.
The headings before each paragraph made it easy to navigate.
Chatty/Informal Style of the article made it more interesting.
Negatives
2nd page seemed a bit bland in comparison to 1st, something missing.
The text in the breakout box was a bit specific.
20. Mock Up 2 Feedback
Positives
Imagery in the article was well acted out and well taken.
“Something the NHS would use.” – Quote from one person. –
Seems Professional.
Negatives
Seemed a bit bland, not enough colours.
Simplistic/Calm layout didn’t go down too well.
Felt boring to read with the serious article.
21. Mock-Up Conclusion
Overall, the majority of positive comments were
about my first and not my second.
This made me focus on creating the article in the
style of the first mock up.
Will be using more techniques from the first article to
the second.
The article style itself will also be more laid-back and
chatty than serious and formal.

With this being the brief that the Northern Echo had issued, I had to take a number of things into consideration. I had to think about whether or not what I have to offer fits the organisation.
These are the aims that I have for my product. My content will address these 3 points. My articles feature information on coping with stress and if video games are causing or even reducing stress. Also there is an article on whether or not gaming is ruining our generation and I will be weighing up points that could suggest that it is or it isn’t, and finally my last article will be a review on the most played game at the moment, League Of Legends. Not only will it be a review of the game, but I will also look at the stereotypes that come with the people who play this game or gamers in general. “Nerd” is a term commonly associated with avid gamers, so I will be looking at whether people deserve this title and if being a “Nerd” is a bad thing or a good thing.
