Stress
Stress is a mental or emotional tension. It is a normal, everyday, part of life. Stress can be bad, but it
can also lead to a useful purpose. It can be anywhere from short term to long term stress and
symptoms can be anywhere from sweating to depression. Stress can be caused by many different
things and can have many different symptoms; therefore each cause and each symptom can vary
from person to person.
Stress is the body's reaction to any change that requires an adjustment or response (webmd.boots).
The body reacts to these changes with physical, cognitive, behavioral, and emotional responses.
Physical responses are like insomnia, difficulty swallowing, clenched jaw, sweaty palms, or
stumbling your words (The Impact of Stress). Cognitive signs are mental slowness, worrying,
inability to focus, or difficulty concentrating (Stress Symptoms). Behavioral responses are when you
feel overworked, irritation, or no sense of humor. Emotional signs are sense of loneliness, poor work
relations, or avoiding social contact (The Impact of Stress).
Everybody has different stress triggers. 40% of US workers admit to experiencing office stress
(causes of stress). It can be caused by an unhappy job, work overload, working long hours, poor
management, dangerous conditions, discrimination, or being insecure about your chance of be
promoted. Home life also causes a lot of stress. This can be death of a loved one, divorce, marriage,
moving, illness or injury, taking care of an elderly family member, or a traumatic event. Stress can
also be caused from the inside, like fear, uncertainty, worrying, and change (causes of stress). Your
stress level will differ based on your personality. It will also differ on how you personally respond to
situations. Your body can show stress in multiple ways. Muscles can tighten, your energy levels can
drop, or your blood pressure can rise (Heid). Due to stress, you can break out, your hair can fall out,
your stomach can ache, your ears can ring, and your nails can look funky. Stress could also cause
scrapes and cuts to not heal. This is because stress can draw water away from your skin's outer

physically in stressful situations. When someone is stressed, the nervous system releases hormones
that either help them get through the stressful situation or crumple under the pressure. This leads to
what is known as acute stress (short term) which includes increased heart rates, faster breathing,

Introduction
Stress is one of the most common and well–known risk factors trivializing one's health. Given how
fast paced modern life is, this makes stress unavoidable. Stress is a negative emotional response,
which is accompanied by biological, physiological, psychological, and emotional changes in the
body.
Stress causes sympathetic activation of the hypothalamus which then acts on the adrenal cortex and
releases the hormones cortisol and adrenaline. These two hormones create what is known as the
"fight or flight" response. This response causes many bodily changes, which would normally be
needed to deal with emergency situations. Therefore, chronic long–term stress over a significant
period of time can really drain the body and can be deleterious to one's health. Stressors can exploit
a person's physiological systems and be detrimental to their health. Thus, it is important for people
to develop ways to cope with stress in an appropriate manner and manage the demands of situations
that are considered stressful.
Yoga is an excellent example of a coping mechanism used to reduce the aversive effects of health.

Stress is a common theme in my life. I have to admit that, for me, personally, it has become a
chronic condition. Recently, I have finally made the step of realizing that stress is the evil dictator
ruling a vicious cycle. A revolution is necessary:
Stress is something we have all experienced at some point in our lives. From a biological
perspective, stress is a phenomenon that occurs when we experience circumstances that disturb our
physical and mental equilibrium. These circumstances, which are referred to as stressors, include
heavy workloads, relationship problems, illnesses or upcoming, life–changing events such as
weddings, divorces or childbirth. Stress is naturally occurring and can even be helpful in certain
situations such as being under pressure to finish an essay, but if stress is not relieved it becomes
chronic. Chronic stress can have negative effects on our physical and psychological condition,

What is stress? Stress is one's body's natural response to threats and pressure. Athletes feel stress
during any game or race, students feel stress before a big test or exam. Workers feel stress when they
are assigned to a big project or up for a promotion. Stress causes feelings of nervousness, low
energy, and even tenses us up and makes us feel on–edge and easily irritable. When a person is

discussed in this report will be the forming of habits as coping mechanisms. Common habits include

communicate with a customer or borrower, they experience stress. When the employee is being
micromanaged, they experience stress. There are so many factors that cause stress, thereby
triggering the habit of smoking. It is a quick and easy relief, but it is also temporary. Therefore, one
might go through multiple cigarettes in one working day. Although it helps to reduce the stress at the
moment, the smoking of cigarettes causes damage to the body, as well as those around them. This
habit is doing more harm than help, and could magnify the other effects from stress. Unhealthy
eating habits Another habit that should be addressed is unhealthy diets. A diet is not just a
specialized routine that cuts back on calories and counts macros. A diet, in this case, is merely the
food and drinks that one consumes on a normal day–to–day basis. Similar to smoking, eating fast
foods is a quick and easy way to relieve stress. Whether this habit relieves the stress by saving the
worry of spending too much money and time on eating, or simply because it feels good to eat
unhealthy foods, the body is suffering from it. There is even a term for this: "stress eating." This
implies overeating and indulging in "comfort foods," or foods that contain high levels of sodium,

either good stress or bad stress depending on the nature, extent and outcome. It can be a good stress
if it is temporary, positive, motivational and helpful for an individual to accomplish more and can be

as physical, emotional and mental disturbance of a human body. Things that are stressful for one
person cannot necessarily be stressful for others.
Workplace stress is common in adults but children, teenagers; elderly people can also undergo stress
for various reasons that can include increase violence, peer pressure, substance abuse, social
isolation, loneliness, loss of support etc. These are powerful stress busters.

This kind of stress can cause more psychological problems than physical threats. Blood sugar level
increases, blood clots can occur, rapid increase of heart rate and blood pressure. Our body undergoes
changes to fight or flight the stress but when this is repeatedly invoked it may lead to heart attack,
stroke and other deadly conditions.
Effects of Stress
Stress can lead to emotional and physical disorders including anxiety, depression, stroke, heart
problems, gastrointestinal disorders, mood swings, skin diseases and various other diseases. The

Stress is something that is inevitable, but what people do not always understand is the fact that
anxiety, depression, sadness, and stress all impact your physical well being. All of these factors
trigger a lower immune system, now picture being in poverty with fear and stress, what people do
not get is the fact that it is not just being hungry or feeling less clothed, it is the feeling of believing
you that are unwanted, uncared for, and unloved. The term stress filled with uncertainty that is used
to describe a dreadful continuous event or responding to events. Growing up in poverty can lead to
poor health and social outcomes, which can also have the impact of morbidity and chronic diseases
that impoverished kids from academic achievements and more behavior problems and emotional
issues (Gupta, 2007). This also includes inadequate health and educational resources which creates a
toxic environment, fewer social opportunities and more exposure to trauma. It is important to
recognize that stress is a trickling effect, it affects you but also the people around you. Stress can
influence the way the brain develops. During, fetal brain development, a very long process starts
after the tenth gestational week when organs, begin to form, during this time the body is extremely
vulnerable to the excessive maternal stress hormones which can change the cognitive function and

  • 1. Causes And Effects Of Stress Stress Stress is a mental or emotional tension. It is a normal, everyday, part of life. Stress can be bad, but it can also lead to a useful purpose. It can be anywhere from short term to long term stress and symptoms can be anywhere from sweating to depression. Stress can be caused by many different things and can have many different symptoms; therefore each cause and each symptom can vary from person to person. Stress is the body's reaction to any change that requires an adjustment or response (webmd.boots). The body reacts to these changes with physical, cognitive, behavioral, and emotional responses. Physical responses are like insomnia, difficulty swallowing, clenched jaw, sweaty palms, or stumbling your words (The Impact of Stress). Cognitive signs are mental slowness, worrying, inability to focus, or difficulty concentrating (Stress Symptoms). Behavioral responses are when you feel overworked, irritation, or no sense of humor. Emotional signs are sense of loneliness, poor work relations, or avoiding social contact (The Impact of Stress). Everybody has different stress triggers. 40% of US workers admit to experiencing office stress (causes of stress). It can be caused by an unhappy job, work overload, working long hours, poor management, dangerous conditions, discrimination, or being insecure about your chance of be promoted. Home life also causes a lot of stress. This can be death of a loved one, divorce, marriage, moving, illness or injury, taking care of an elderly family member, or a traumatic event.
