1. In what ways does you music magazine
product use, develop or challenge forms
and conventions of real media products?
2. Front page
The masthead of my music magazine is “lyric culture” and I
believe it represents the indie/rock genre and the font and
colour scheme suggest that. The reason why I select these
words for my masthead as I believe the represent the genre
of the magazine as the lyric and culture suggest how music
is very praised by many people and how many stick to one
genre such as indie/rock creating a sense of a indie/rock
cult to that particular genre. The two font style of the
masthead that I selected are a type writer of the work lyric
ad for the word culture I used a quite edgy font. Both of
these fonts suggest to the my selected target audience
that the magazine is quite edgy rock magazine as the
colour scheme I’ve chosen is white and black create a
sense of contrast and a dark look to the that magazine.
design and layout/house style/Guttenberg principle
house style: the house style of my magazine consist of the
colours red, black and white as the selected colours used
are represent the ides of rebellion, edginess, quite dark and
outgoing music. The reason I selected these colours for my
front cover was too create a sense of contrast as each
colour makes everything look more bolder to the audiences
eye as I used certain colours that’s are known to catch my
select genres eye such as the colour red which is used for
my cover lines to attract my target audience. The fonts
used are in various sizes to show important and what’s more
interesting to read in the magazine that the audience will
enjoy. The font used for the USP (unique selling point) is to
show what the this issue of the music magazine will be the
mostly focused about.
3. Guttenberg principle:
Primary optical area: the primary optical area focuses on the masthead and one of
the cover lines “the 1975 global success” which are one of the most important to the
magazine as people are aware the title of the magazine is and also what the
magazine will contain which will attract them to buy the magazine.
Strong fallow area: the strong fallow area focus on one of the cover lines about the
band the royal blood at the brits which a event that accrued in the music industry
that was very entertaining to watch and hear about, which will attract audiences as
more people want to know what the artist felt about their experience at the brits.
Weak fallow area: in the weak fallow area there is now information that is important
for the audience to read about as there a black space.
Terminal area: the terminal area focus on the USP on the magazine the main cover
story Laura Stott which will gain audiences interest as it’s the second thing they see
after seeing the primary optical area focus point.
photography /mise en scene/rule of thirds/props
In the main image used for my front cover I didn’t uses any props because i believe
that a simple image can still attract the target audience without using any props. I
used the rule of third to make the magazine to appear more sophisticated and make
the magazine look more organized when adding my cover lives to my front cover.
the picture was taken in a shop in the north quarter in Manchester which is known for
quiet indie and the main image did original have many objects in the background
but it didn’t represent the genre of the magazine so I eased the background on
Photoshop to make the image more edgier which made the magazine more
effective.
4. Special effects any image manipulation you
have used on photography.
For the front cover image I did use photograph
shop to make the main protagonist look more
edger to represent the indie/rock genre, and also
create an idea a rebellion which the selected
genre is quite know for being edgy and rebellious
music compared to the genres such as POP.
The editing technique used on this image was
brightness and contrast to manipulate the image
to make the image appear darker as the house
style of the magazine is red, black and white
which represent the music genre.
5. The title of the Magazine:
The font used for the content page was the type writer text as I wanted the
text of the contents page to match the masthead of the magazine and
changed the boldness of different page titles to give the idea to the audience
which pages are more important and which will be more appealing.
The colour scheme is red, black and white to match the front cover colour
scheme but used a white background to create contrast with the other colour
to make ten fonts to appear much bolder that using a black background that
I used on the front cover.
design and layout/house style/Guttenberg principle
house style: colour used for the font and the overall design is red, white and
black. the font colour used is red and black to which look much bolder with
the white background creating a sophisticated look to the magazine.
Font: the font used for the main writing for this page the type writer font to
match the font used for the masthead word lyric. In this content page some of
the words and numbers appear bigger and bolder than other suggesting to
the audiences theses will be more interesting and possible most important to
read about.
design and layout: the design layout of the contents page is set into three
sections to create an organized but the layout of the photographs and the
text create juxsipostion as the content is set in different place creating an idea
of going against the rules such as the genre indie/rock.
Guttenberg principle
Primary optical area: the primary optical area focus on the main the cover star
suggesting to the audience that she is the more important and main story in
the magazine.
strong fallow area: this section focuses on the :this week section telling the
audience this is the most important and interesting pages in the magazine that
will attract the audience to buy the magazine.
weak fallow area: the weak fallow area focuses on the small image of the
front cover and what you get in this month’s issues which I don’t want the
audience to focus on.
terminal area: the terminal area focus on the image of a duo artist suggesting
these might be interesting to read to the audience.
6. photography /mise en scene/rule of thirds/props
in these three images I’ve used of different artist I used portraiture technique
to make the magazine look more sophisticated to the audience as two of
the artist are giving direct address in the image while the third and smaller
image in the bottom right corner the two main subjects are looking in
different directions and while one of them is holding a guitar creating
juxsipostion.
Special effects any image manipulation you have used on photography
For these images on my content page I just manipulated the brightness by
making image brighter that others to match their character.
For the contents page I used Kerrang to give ideas for layout for my own
product as I like for the contents page was structured giving the magazine
more of a organized look to it which I want my magazine to be like to make
the magazine more sophisticated.
7. The title of the Magazine:
On the double page spread of the this magazine the lexis
is the artists name using a red colour scheme which a
black drop shadow make the lettering look 3D and
bolder. This colour scheme was used as is represent the
artist’s genre of indie/rock suggesting the artist being
edgy, rebellious and outgoing which the genre is known
for in the music industry.
Design layout
design layout: the double page spread is separated into
5 sections to create an organized and sophisticated look
to the magazine and represents the idea of the indie
rock genre being a sophisticated music genre however
the main image and the additional images used contrast
that idea the three smaller images of the main subject
are quite stupid and not serious representing the idea of
the genre being rebellious and fun.
house style: the colours used for the double page spread
is the continues colour scheme used from the front page
and contents page of red, white and black to represent
the indie rock genre as the black and red connotations
are known for being rebellious and bold which I want the
colours to suggest the magazine to be of being bold. The
fonts used for the double page spread is the same font
used for the front cover and the contents page to show
the continues house style theme to make look more
sophisticated rather using different fonts for very page.
8. photography /mise en scene/rule of
thirds/props:
The images used for the double page spread
the digital photography used I focused on
lighting and composition to capture various
types of images of the main subject pulling
funny faces, messing about and looking directly
into the camera to create an idea being fun
and outgoing.
Special effects any image manipulation you
have used on photography:
The only editing techniques used in these
images are brightness and contrasts and the
crop tool on the smaller images on the double
page.
This idea for my double page spread was
influenced by the music magazine Q as I mostly
liked their double page spreads are well
organized into sections to give a sophisticated
look to the music, which I applied to my product
but in my own way.
