3. What are some immediate editing
techniques they use and why?
Often starts off at a normal pace to set the equilibrium and normality.
There is a build up of montage editing to fasten the pace and make it complex. This
builds up tension until it reaches the climax and the highlight of the disequilibrium.
4. There is also fade to black transitions used. Using this creates mystery as though
there is a restricted narrative that only limited information is revealed.
CGI is used to emphasis during fight scenes and is often used through the
disequilibrium. This makes the film more thrilling.
Slow motion is used so audiences can pay attention to detail and the impact of
what is happening. The time in which the action takes place it allows audiences to
question whether it will be a success or not.
5. There is often non-linear narrative used. This allows there to be a mystery to the
crime.
Throughout crime thriller trailers there is a constant reference to specific scenes
within the film so that audiences can make a link a puzzle the crime together and
this creates enigmas and involves audiences.
6. How does the pace change and why?
The pace at the beginning will often start at a normal pace and gradually
increase at the climatic points and especially at the disequilibrium.
It could be said that at the disequilibrium this is where most information is
revealed and by using a fast pace it almost restricts the information from
being revealed.
Through the pace change it allows tension to be built and for enigmas to be
created.
7. What editing techniques are used in
different genres and why?
Genre Editing Techniques
Romance
- Set at slow/normal pace- sets a soft mood
- Ellipses- tells the journey of the love
- Flashbacks- the memories
- Fade to White- heavenly glow
Action
- Fast pace- during fight scenes
- Match on Action- builds tension
- Slow motion- when there is something specific that
audiences need to concentrate on
8. How does the editing
connect/compliment the plot and
narrative structure?
Fast pace creates thrill for the audiences during the explosive and fight
scenes. CGI also evokes this.
Flashbacks is a technique which distinguishes the non-linear narrative in
crime thrillers so that audience can link the information they are given
together.
9. What editing techniques do you find
inspirational?
I thought that the montage editing (Taken) was inspirational in creating fast
pace and a tense atmosphere at it leads into the disequilibrium.
Fast pace inevitably creates thrill when there is so many things happening at
once. It doesn’t allow audiences to absorb a lot of information and this allows
enigmas to be created.
