2. What are some immediate editing
techniques they use and why?
• In Supernatural horrors movies there is fast insert shots of the history
(flashbacks towards a certain creature, person or object). This is to create
the mood of the film.
Trailer: Ouija
• Match on action is usually used on psychological-supernatural horror to
show the audience what the characters are doing in that certain scene.
Trailer: Oculus
3. • In science fiction heist thriller Cross Cutting is used to make the
audience understand that both scenes are happening at the same
time but in different locations.
• Ellipses is used in American Horror films to just not show the
unimportant parts, this time saved for the most tense and suspense
parts of the film.
• CGI is used within the supernatural action genre, this is to make the
special effects look more realistic and the computer generated
images.
Trailer: Inception
Trailer: Drag me to Hell
Trailer: The Last Witch
Hunter
4. How does the pace change and why?
In the trailer the pace is usually slow at the
beginning, around the middle there is the climatic
point where the trailer usually ends. This will build
up tension, therefore creating enigmas, which will
attract the audience to watch the movie.
Trailer: Insidious: Chapter 3
5. What editing techniques are used in different
genres and why? (What editing techniques are
conventional to specific genres)
Genre Editing Techniques
Horror Usually there is fast pace editing used to attract the audiences attention, this
allows there to be enigmas, apart from that it allows to create a climatic
atmosphere, which will bring large attention to the audience and will scare them.
An Example of this technique used is in ‘Insidious Chapter 3’ where fast pace
editing is used in order to make the have jump scares and large scares.
Action A conventional editing technique used in Action films would be lots of CGI, for
example in ‘The Last Witch Hunter’ their various amounts of CGI used, this
would be the special effects, and the 3D animations used to “threat or attack the
main character or help”.
Spy Usually in spy film the editing technique used is insert shots, these would be to
present to the audience, what the character is looking at, or using. Also, Another
technique used would be slow motion where we can see either a person or an
object moving slowly, this will create enigmas therefore causing the audience to
be with enigmas. A clear example of this would be in ‘ Kingsman: The Secret
Service’ where the spy pulls the glass of beer to throw to one of the character and
then we can see when the fight is happening and how the spy is shooting and how
it hits the other person in slow motion.
6. How does the editing connect/
compliment the plot and narrative
structure?
• Editing can produce more intense scenes by using Fast Pace editing,
by using this it will allow to create enigmas and to set the atmosphere.
• Insert shots also creates enigmas and curiosity since the audience
would want to know what the character is looking or holding.
• CGI this would be the special effects, and the 3D animations used to
“threat or attack the main character or help”.

7. What editing techniques do you find
inspirational? (What editing techniques would
you like to use in your coursework and why?)
The editing technique that I find inspirational is fast pace because it gave me
a clear idea that most horror genre movie use this technique, which allows for
the movie to be a success and to create more enigmas and scare the audience
Another editing technique that I would like to use for my trailer would be
slow motion. This will however extend the time of the movie/ trailer but I
will just it very minimal. I want to use it because it will also leave the
audience with enigmas therefore attracting the audience to want to watch the
full movie.
Finally another editing technique I would like to use is insert shots, this will
allow the audience to be aware of what the situation is.
‘Kingsman: The Secret Service
includes all these examples from
Insert shot, Fast Pace, and slow
motion in just one scene, in this
case only one part of the trailer.
