Differences of continuity and non continuity editing.
• Continuity editing is creating an illusion of smooth and continues action
to keep the audiences attention to the story you see this in all films
otherwise you just would not watch them as you will get bored or
distracted/confused.
• Non continuity editing is where shots are mismatched to disrupt the
impressions of time and space, this Is used not often but to make the
audience concentrate more on the film. It is used in pulp fiction and
dead pool.
• I am going to analyze some clips and the editing techniques to check if
its non continuity or continuity editing with describing the editing
techniques explaining the effect it has and why it gives that effect.

Montage technique
• Montage is a film editing technique in which a series of short shots are sequenced to condense
space, time, and information. The term has been used in various contexts.
• This clip is famous for its montage editing, this clip shows soldiers shooting people down as they are
running away. The montage of clips is good editing as it goes from all of them running to certain
people and close ups on people being shot, falling over and the absolute fear of some of them. This
creates an effect on the audience as its creating tension for them as it moves from scene to scene
of pure terror. When the boy falls over it transitions to him to being stood on by multiple people,
and the editor uses multiple angles and close ups of this scene. In one scene as the boy is being
trampled on the editor uses multiple different angled close ups of his different body parts being
trampled on, like feet onto hands and his ankles being crushed for the audience to get a really good
view of the absolute manic going on. There is wide shots to establishing shots to show the people
running down in panic. Also there is a few jump cuts used to show urgency. One shot is above
watching down on the soldiers firing and people running and being shot down. The reason the
editor has done this is to properly show the audience what's happening and what is going on.
Clip 2:WAY DOWN EAST - Early Example of Parallel
Action- https://youtu.be/lI2e3pXat54
• Parallel editing (cross cutting) is the technique of alternating two or more scenes that often happen
simultaneously but in different locations. If the scenes are simultaneous, they occasionally culminate in a
single place, where the relevant parties confront each other.
• In this clips you can see multiple shots of 2 different scenes, one of a women falling off ice and the other a
man running across ice. The way parallel editing works is that it actually shows 2 scenes that has been shot in
separate areas after each other. This is edited to make it look like they are happening in the same time/area
or just 2 different scenes to create tension. As an example in this clip it looks like the women is about to be
saved. the constant changes from him running to a close-up of her face, like she is about to die, then back to
him running. This creates tension with the audience as you don’t know If she is going to be saved or not.
Editors use this technique to keeps you on your Feet as you don’t know What's going to happen or how it will
end, and that’s how this technique effects the audience. He combines the close ups and establishing shots to
show the area and situation they are in, as well as a few close ups to show the reaction of the women who was
slowly falling into the ice. Then there is a transition of a close up off the man falling and getting back up to
run for her. All these editing techniques used creates an impact on the audience trying to figure out if he will
reach the women in time. Towards the end it shows the women slowly going to fall to her death, it shows
where she will drop then last second the other man we saw in the parallel editing shows in the same shot as
her and she is saved. The editor uses parallel editing to show the audience how desperate the man is to save
her. It’s also to help the audience follow the narrative with the continuity. My evaluation of this clip is that the
editor done a good job with the use of parallel. I think this as it flows smoothly as I could easily
Clip 3: The silence of the lambs-More parallel
editing(misleading)-
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ts1x6uADFtM
• Parallel editing (cross cutting) is the technique of alternating two or more scenes that often happen
simultaneously but in different locations. If the scenes are simultaneous, they occasionally culminate in a single
place, where the relevant parties confront each other.
• In silence of the lambs this is a great use of parallel editing as it is an example of misleading the audience. They
start of the parallel editing with the police setting up an ambush on a house, which is led for you to believe to be
the antagonist location. Then it switches to a close up of the antagonist looking at the bug, looking like he has no
idea what’s going on and he has no clue that they are preparing an ambush. You can see how they are trying to
give off the fact that they are outside his house. Next scene it’s quite quick with the parallel editing as its quick
cuts from the antagonist to the police setting up the ambush for him. The antagonist then grabs a gun and this is
when parallel editing start building tension. You can already see how it is better than the last clip with the timing
of the cuts and types of shots they use to build more tension for the audience. In one scene he grabs a gun and
rushes out the door as if he knows something is coming. Then the scene is switched to the man at the door
pressing the door bell, as soon as he presses the doorbell it transitions to an alarm going off, to again mislead the
audience to think the antagonist is in trouble and that he is going to be caught out. This uses of continuity editing
here really works with the audience. Everyone was fooled and thought he was getting caught but then he opens
the door and its not the person who was shown pressing the doorbell but someone else which at that point
surprises the audience. The FBI burst through the window and realizes he's not their and the women is in trouble.
My evaluation of this clip is that the use of parallel editing used in this clip here is a lot better than the way down
east. The reason I think this is because the way the clips are ordered are better also technology is a big factor in
this, as transitions are smoother. Overall this clip is very good as it has great uses of parallel editing to mislead
the audience.
Clip 4: Rocky III Training montage:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4soF2wigKSM
• Montage is a film editing technique in which a series of short shots are sequenced to condense space, time, and information. The
term has been used in various contexts.
This is a famous scene from a very iconic film, this uses of montage editing is probably one off the best. It does perfectly with
condensing time and space. One way they manage to do this well is by the music they used. Eye of the tiger is a great song to play in
the background as it is energetic and gives the audience the same feeling as what rocky would be. They use a good dissolve at the
beginning to show the start of Rocky’s Journey. They start of with a light jog and it quickly transitions with him missing the punching
bag, showing the start of his journey and also the beginning of the montage. As the montage goes on every clip that you see again, he
gets better and that’s effect of the montage editing. Doing this condenses time and instead of showing you every bit of training he
does, the montage makes it more interesting to the Audience instead. Towards the end of the montage you can see he end up doing
better than his partner in the end. He beats him in the race and pulls the guy in the pool. Doing this shows the effect of montage
editing, as there has only been 2 minutes worth of clips for about 2 months of training. Made it much more entertaining with the quick
cuts and the music eye of the tiger in the background. In one scene, Rocky and his trainer are jogging. The editor uses a slow motion
edit which adds more of an effect to the scene as this is the scene where he starts to get better and improve. With this slow motion
edit it goes well with a montage as there is no speaking. Also the music can still play over without effecting the continuity of the film.
Another editing technique used in this is a Zoom, this zoom is on the muscles of the legs, again to show the improvement of his
training. The editor uses multiple Zooms but another one he uses is when he's practicing in the ring. The editor zooms in on his trainer
doing his routine and then he steps out the shot for then rocky to jump in and copy his routine perfectly. These effects again work well
with the montage editing as it all blends well. The last good Zoom that is used is on his footwork to again show the audience how good
he is getting and creating the illusion of this being over months of work. My evaluation of this clip is that I think the editor has done a
really good job with the montage editing better than the Stairs scene did. The reason I think this is because its a lot shorter and the
added background music and visual makes the audience want to join in and be like rocky themselves. Furthermore, this clip is very
famous for the montage effect and it just shows how good of a job they did in this scene for the film.
Clip 5: Team America spoof montage scene:
• This clips basically explains what a montage actually is by joking about it. The song is a total joke
as it sings about how it actually is a montage. Rocky is mentioned in it as well, just to show the
editing really effects the narrative in this film as this takes of the illusion that your watching a film.
The editor uses multiple of different transitions to show that it’s a different scene and a passage of
time. They use dissolves, split screening and cross cutting. All these techniques are used to get rid
of the fact it’s a film and almost like its an music video. They do this for comedy more than
narrative as that’s the genre of the film. In comparison to the rocky montage scene this is more
joking than serious and uses the most of the over the top editing techniques. Where as in rocky its
way more serious with proper cuts and uses continuity editing. The effect this has on the audience
is that while watching they are watching team America they can see it’s a joke with these editing
techniques and transitions, but in rocky it’s more serious. For this film it makes sense for the editor
to do it as the genre suites it. Again it is similar as it has at the start being awful then making
progress through each cut of the scene, until the end where he is the “perfect soldier”. This was
over probably about 2 hours as it literally says it’s a montage so they are not trying to hide it. My
evaluation off this clip is that for its genre it is a good idea and is funny on how they joke about it.
Rocky’s montage clip is better as it uses continuity editing and uses proper cuts. The editor done
well at what he was supposed to do which therefore still beats the clip on the montage in my
opinion.

Editing techniques

  • 2. Differences of continuity and non continuity editing. • Continuity editing is creating an illusion of smooth and continues action to keep the audiences attention to the story you see this in all films otherwise you just would not watch them as you will get bored or distracted/confused. • Non continuity editing is where shots are mismatched to disrupt the impressions of time and space, this Is used not often but to make the audience concentrate more on the film. It is used in pulp fiction and dead pool. • I am going to analyze some clips and the editing techniques to check if its non continuity or continuity editing with describing the editing techniques explaining the effect it has and why it gives that effect.
  • 3. Clip 1: Battleships Potemkin: Odessa steps sequence- https://youtu.be/JecXKK2rmCc Montage technique • Montage is a film editing technique in which a series of short shots are sequenced to condense space, time, and information. The term has been used in various contexts. • This clip is famous for its montage editing, this clip shows soldiers shooting people down as they are running away. The montage of clips is good editing as it goes from all of them running to certain people and close ups on people being shot, falling over and the absolute fear of some of them. This creates an effect on the audience as its creating tension for them as it moves from scene to scene of pure terror. When the boy falls over it transitions to him to being stood on by multiple people, and the editor uses multiple angles and close ups of this scene. In one scene as the boy is being trampled on the editor uses multiple different angled close ups of his different body parts being trampled on, like feet onto hands and his ankles being crushed for the audience to get a really good view of the absolute manic going on. There is wide shots to establishing shots to show the people running down in panic. Also there is a few jump cuts used to show urgency. One shot is above watching down on the soldiers firing and people running and being shot down. The reason the editor has done this is to properly show the audience what's happening and what is going on.
  • 4. Clip 2:WAY DOWN EAST - Early Example of Parallel Action- https://youtu.be/lI2e3pXat54 • Parallel editing (cross cutting) is the technique of alternating two or more scenes that often happen simultaneously but in different locations. If the scenes are simultaneous, they occasionally culminate in a single place, where the relevant parties confront each other. • In this clips you can see multiple shots of 2 different scenes, one of a women falling off ice and the other a man running across ice. The way parallel editing works is that it actually shows 2 scenes that has been shot in separate areas after each other. This is edited to make it look like they are happening in the same time/area or just 2 different scenes to create tension. As an example in this clip it looks like the women is about to be saved. the constant changes from him running to a close-up of her face, like she is about to die, then back to him running. This creates tension with the audience as you don’t know If she is going to be saved or not. Editors use this technique to keeps you on your Feet as you don’t know What's going to happen or how it will end, and that’s how this technique effects the audience. He combines the close ups and establishing shots to show the area and situation they are in, as well as a few close ups to show the reaction of the women who was slowly falling into the ice. Then there is a transition of a close up off the man falling and getting back up to run for her. All these editing techniques used creates an impact on the audience trying to figure out if he will reach the women in time. Towards the end it shows the women slowly going to fall to her death, it shows where she will drop then last second the other man we saw in the parallel editing shows in the same shot as her and she is saved. The editor uses parallel editing to show the audience how desperate the man is to save her. It’s also to help the audience follow the narrative with the continuity. My evaluation of this clip is that the editor done a good job with the use of parallel. I think this as it flows smoothly as I could easily
  • 5. Clip 3: The silence of the lambs-More parallel editing(misleading)- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ts1x6uADFtM • Parallel editing (cross cutting) is the technique of alternating two or more scenes that often happen simultaneously but in different locations. If the scenes are simultaneous, they occasionally culminate in a single place, where the relevant parties confront each other. • In silence of the lambs this is a great use of parallel editing as it is an example of misleading the audience. They start of the parallel editing with the police setting up an ambush on a house, which is led for you to believe to be the antagonist location. Then it switches to a close up of the antagonist looking at the bug, looking like he has no idea what’s going on and he has no clue that they are preparing an ambush. You can see how they are trying to give off the fact that they are outside his house. Next scene it’s quite quick with the parallel editing as its quick cuts from the antagonist to the police setting up the ambush for him. The antagonist then grabs a gun and this is when parallel editing start building tension. You can already see how it is better than the last clip with the timing of the cuts and types of shots they use to build more tension for the audience. In one scene he grabs a gun and rushes out the door as if he knows something is coming. Then the scene is switched to the man at the door pressing the door bell, as soon as he presses the doorbell it transitions to an alarm going off, to again mislead the audience to think the antagonist is in trouble and that he is going to be caught out. This uses of continuity editing here really works with the audience. Everyone was fooled and thought he was getting caught but then he opens the door and its not the person who was shown pressing the doorbell but someone else which at that point surprises the audience. The FBI burst through the window and realizes he's not their and the women is in trouble. My evaluation of this clip is that the use of parallel editing used in this clip here is a lot better than the way down east. The reason I think this is because the way the clips are ordered are better also technology is a big factor in this, as transitions are smoother. Overall this clip is very good as it has great uses of parallel editing to mislead the audience.
  • 6. Clip 4: Rocky III Training montage: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4soF2wigKSM • Montage is a film editing technique in which a series of short shots are sequenced to condense space, time, and information. The term has been used in various contexts. This is a famous scene from a very iconic film, this uses of montage editing is probably one off the best. It does perfectly with condensing time and space. One way they manage to do this well is by the music they used. Eye of the tiger is a great song to play in the background as it is energetic and gives the audience the same feeling as what rocky would be. They use a good dissolve at the beginning to show the start of Rocky’s Journey. They start of with a light jog and it quickly transitions with him missing the punching bag, showing the start of his journey and also the beginning of the montage. As the montage goes on every clip that you see again, he gets better and that’s effect of the montage editing. Doing this condenses time and instead of showing you every bit of training he does, the montage makes it more interesting to the Audience instead. Towards the end of the montage you can see he end up doing better than his partner in the end. He beats him in the race and pulls the guy in the pool. Doing this shows the effect of montage editing, as there has only been 2 minutes worth of clips for about 2 months of training. Made it much more entertaining with the quick cuts and the music eye of the tiger in the background. In one scene, Rocky and his trainer are jogging. The editor uses a slow motion edit which adds more of an effect to the scene as this is the scene where he starts to get better and improve. With this slow motion edit it goes well with a montage as there is no speaking. Also the music can still play over without effecting the continuity of the film. Another editing technique used in this is a Zoom, this zoom is on the muscles of the legs, again to show the improvement of his training. The editor uses multiple Zooms but another one he uses is when he's practicing in the ring. The editor zooms in on his trainer doing his routine and then he steps out the shot for then rocky to jump in and copy his routine perfectly. These effects again work well with the montage editing as it all blends well. The last good Zoom that is used is on his footwork to again show the audience how good he is getting and creating the illusion of this being over months of work. My evaluation of this clip is that I think the editor has done a really good job with the montage editing better than the Stairs scene did. The reason I think this is because its a lot shorter and the added background music and visual makes the audience want to join in and be like rocky themselves. Furthermore, this clip is very famous for the montage effect and it just shows how good of a job they did in this scene for the film.
  • 7. Clip 5: Team America spoof montage scene: HTTPs://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhWiTORp22k • This clips basically explains what a montage actually is by joking about it. The song is a total joke as it sings about how it actually is a montage. Rocky is mentioned in it as well, just to show the editing really effects the narrative in this film as this takes of the illusion that your watching a film. The editor uses multiple of different transitions to show that it’s a different scene and a passage of time. They use dissolves, split screening and cross cutting. All these techniques are used to get rid of the fact it’s a film and almost like its an music video. They do this for comedy more than narrative as that’s the genre of the film. In comparison to the rocky montage scene this is more joking than serious and uses the most of the over the top editing techniques. Where as in rocky its way more serious with proper cuts and uses continuity editing. The effect this has on the audience is that while watching they are watching team America they can see it’s a joke with these editing techniques and transitions, but in rocky it’s more serious. For this film it makes sense for the editor to do it as the genre suites it. Again it is similar as it has at the start being awful then making progress through each cut of the scene, until the end where he is the “perfect soldier”. This was over probably about 2 hours as it literally says it’s a montage so they are not trying to hide it. My evaluation off this clip is that for its genre it is a good idea and is funny on how they joke about it. Rocky’s montage clip is better as it uses continuity editing and uses proper cuts. The editor done well at what he was supposed to do which therefore still beats the clip on the montage in my opinion.
