Editing In Trailers

Action Thrillers
What are some immediate editing techniques
they use and why?
- Fast pace editing is used to set the mood and create
tension.
- Match on action is usually used within fast pace editing to
make it flow more and for the action scene to be more
intense.
- Cross cutting is usually used with fast pace editing as the cuts in-between
the clips gets faster. Cross cutting is used to emphasis the
moment.
- Ellipsis is used to save time on unimportant details that the audience
can fill in themselves to create time for more important things.
- CGI is used to glorify things such as fight scenes to include explosions
or bullets flying through the air. This is to give the film more of an
action theme.
How does the pace change and why?
The pace begins slow and then speeds up until a
climatic point where the trailer usually ends.
This builds up tension and thrills the audience,
to create enigmas which draws the audience
into watching it.
What editing techniques are used in different genres
and why? (What editing techniques are conventional
to specific genres)
Genre Editing Techniques Used
Drama Some conventional editing techniques are match on action and eyeline
matching to show the audience what the character is looking at. These
are usually used to expose something major within a drama. The pace is
usually medium as not much action happens so there is no need for fast
pace.
Romance A conventional editing technique used within romance films is flashbacks
to show past memories so the audience can see the backstory. Another
editing technique used is a slow or medium pace so the audience can
follow along, also there is rarely much action so fast pace is not needed.
Horror Fast pace editing is a conventional editing technique used to get the
audiences attention and to thrill and scare them. It is usually used to
create a climatic atmosphere. Another conventional editing technique
used is insert shots. These are usually used to scare the audience or
reveal information to them.
How does the editing connect/compliment
the plot and narrative structure?
Fast pace editing connects with the plot as its usually
used during a chase or fight scene so this helps set
the atmospheree and makes it more intense.
Special effects such as CGI compliment the narrative
structure as they are used for the disequilibrium to
show destruction.
What editing techniques do you find inspirational?
(What editing techniques would you like to use in
your coursework and why)
• After watching several Action Thriller trailers I found
the fast pace editing inspirational because it helps
set the atmosphere for this genre and without it,
they wouldn’t be successful. Fast pace editing
creates thrill amongst the audience and makes them
want to watch it as they usually end at climatic
points.
• I would also like to be able to use match on
action and cross cutting successfully to create
tense action fight scenes so they seem more
realistic.
