2. Narrative
There's always a Antagonist and protagonist
A crime is usually at the core of a narrative
Extraordinary events happening to ordinary people, this means a audience can relate
Battle against justice vs. injustice. Good triumphing over evil
They often involve fast pace, suspense, action suspense and violence
There is normally a crime investigation within the story
High intensity to get the audiences involved
Themes can be based around society’s current fears such as isolation, murder,
kidnapping or terrorism.
Opening leaves audience in suspense that a bad event will happen in future to grab
there attention
However often thriller themes break away from original conventions as are complex.
Enigma is set in the beginning (unanswered questions)
3. Camera
Low camera angles can be used to empower a certain character, giving them authority.
High camera angles are used to make a character appear weak and make them
appear vulnerable or diminish their importance.
Contain lots of close ups for suspense e.g. ‘Se7en’
Often there is a lot of camera movement to increase intensity of the plot to the
audience
Tracking shots and panning to follow main characters and give importance.
camera angles and shots have sudden changes to build suspense and pace
4. Mis en scene
Lighting can be used to create shadows which creates a lot of mystery
Low key lighting to build suspense and danger
Mis-en-scene can be an extension of the character’s mood or reflects the tone of the
film, therefore in dark characters (antagonist) use low key lighting and with good
characters (protagonist) high key lighting
Often there is a lot of camera movement to make the audience relate to the intensity of
the plot
5. Sound
To create suspense and tension fast upbeat music is used
In opening sequence very basic music in background with little diegetic sounds to allow
focus on objects being shown
All had non diegetic music playing in background to allow a sound bridge which creates
a mysterious atmosphere
In ‘Dark knight’ silence and sonic exaggeration is used to build up tension as is very
thought provoking.
6. Editing
Jump cuts are used to aware the audience and allow them to make assumptions into
what is happening, they also quicken the pace
Straight cuts are used to add suspense and gives the audience a sense the thriller is
jumpy
Length of cuts decrease to build up suspense towards a climax
