2. What is Grammar ?
• Grammar is the business of taking a language
to pieces, to see how it works.
• Grammar is the mental system of rule and
categories that allow human to form and
interpret the word and sentences of language
3. Importance of grammar
• Grammar is the backbone of any language and
must be understood in order for one to
communicate effectively.
• Every time you write something you are being
judge on your grammar. Grammar provides you
with the structure you need in order to organize
and put your message and idea across.
• It is like a railways of a language. You won’t able
to convey your ideas to their full extension
without a good command of the underlying
grammar structure and pattern of the language.
4. Approaches of presenting grammar
• There are basically two type of approaches
• Deductive
• inductive
6. Advantages and disadvantages
• Advantages:
1. It gets straight to the point, and can therefore be time saving.
2. It allows teacher to deal with language points as they come
up, rather than having to anticipate them and prepare for
them in advance.
• Disadvantage:
1. It is teacher centered approach.
2. Starting the lesson with grammar presentation may be off-
putting for some students especially younger ones. They may
not have sufficient metalanguage (i.e language used to talk
about language terminologies) or they may not be able to
understand the concept involved
3. Such approach encourage the belief that language learning is
simply a case of knowing rules.
7. Inductive –rules discovery path
• Using inductive approach:
• Students can actively participate in the learning
process
• Rules learner discover for themselves re more
likely to fit their existing mental structure than
rules they have been presenting with. This I turn
makes the rule more meaningful ,memorable
serviceable.
• It problem-solving is done collaboratively, and in
the target language students gets opportunity for
extra practice
8. Disadvantages
• It is time consuming and spent more time and
energy
• It can place heavy demand on teacher in
planning a lesson. They need to select and
organize the data so carefully so as guide
students to an accurate formulation of rule
9. Some Techniques of teaching
grammar
• Teaching grammar in context
• Teaching grammar through text
• Teaching grammar through stories
• Teaching grammar through poems and rhymes
10. Teaching of grammar in context
• The best way to teach grammar is to teach in
situational context
• For example,
• If teacher wants to give a concept of future
tense . He asked the student to discuss plan
for class field trip to zoo
• If teacher wants to give a concept of simple
past tense he asked student to describe their
past vacation or weekend so on….
11. Teaching grammar through text and
stories
• Teacher can teach grammar by selecting a text
or story based on the specific feature of
grammar.
• For example.,
• If teacher want to teach the concept of
present progressive. He select a text or story
based on present progressive tense.
12. Conclusion
• Teachers should teach a language in way that
students feels comfortable with that language.
The main aim of a teacher is to make students
the active user of language rather than
grammarians or linguists.
