UNI
UNIVERSITY’S NEVER IMPOSSIBLE
Brief
You have been commissioned by the
Northern Echo to produce a new
magazine or newspaper product. Your
product could be in any style or genre but
it must be self financed through sales or
advertising. You must also produce your
magazine for a specified audience segment
within the 16 to 25 age group.
•I have been
• asked by you,
:
A new magazine which :
• Filled gap in the market

How will this
effect my
magazine:
Have elements
in common with
their children
Needs to be
appropriate for
them too
What does this mean?
How to meet
this criteria
• Local paper with a local audience
• High production and editorial values
• Sells 34,000 copies per day
• 70% of the Northern Echo’s revenue
comes from advertisement
• Huge social media audience
Older secondary
audience
Family i.e.
mothers and
fathers
Wide range of
the population
Must be
appropriate
Limit taboo
language
No extreme
nakedness or
offensive
content
•Constraints:
• Body dealing with complaints from
members of the public about content of
the magazine.
• 16 codes
• Complaints by individuals who believe
code has been breached
• I have chosen 6 rules that apply to my
magazine
• and I will adhere to these golden rules
6 Rules
• 1. Tress passing : whether it is in a public place or on private land I
have to ensure I have the permission of those who own or are in
control of the land were I want to shoot
• 2. Photography: If you want to use images which you have no
taken yourself you need the permission to do so by those
who have taken the image.
•
• 3. Copy write: to protect material written or taken by
others in order to prevent it from being copied or used by others in other
articles or books etc .
• 4. Health and safety: I have to ensure my photos are been
taken in a safe place
• 5. Confidentiality: I must ensure that all the information
collected is kept confidential unless I have permission to name
them.
• 6. Accuracy: I will ensure all the information used is accurate
and has not been edited to make their opinion be seen in another light.
USP
• Something that isn't available on the
internet
• Of interest to a generation controlled by
social media
• Combines interests of a 16-25 year old
target audience and is available in places
which are popular to this group of people
•There must be a gap in the market
and appropriate for my target
audience.
Therefore
….
Gap in the market
 Science based
 Doesn't cover
all aspects of
Uni life
 Cartoon front
cover
 Not
professional
looking
 Free
 No head or sell
lines
 Boring
 No window to
future self
 1 main head line
 Very bare and
simple
 Strictly
education
based
 Unattractive to
16-25 year olds
 Only read by
Manchester
university
students
USP
• Not many university magazines out there
• There is a gap in the market
• Its fresh, current, different
• Dark but classy theme
• For a uni-sex audience
• Appropriate and interesting content for the
• TA
Genre Research
Types of magazines my
Target Audience read
Cosmo
Company
Kerrang
Glamor
Marie Claire
Health and fitness (Men's fitness)
Characteristics of these magazines
Feminine colours
Bright Lively
Heavy text =
higher SEG
Variety of fonts
Window to
future self
Characteristics
of DPS’s
Bright /
colorful
Lots of
imagery
60:40
70:30 text to
image
Breakout

Consistent
colour
scheme
pull out
quote
Text heavy :
higher S E
group
How will this effect my
article
 Must be bright
 Heavy text based
 Educational content
 3 Colour rule
 An equal mix of serif and san serif
fonts but a consistency of fonts
 Heavier text than image ratio
 Models to future self
So in my magazine

• ****For STUDENTS****
•I created 2 mock ups of my own
and
this is the feed back I got!
Mock up 1 Positive:
• Likes the purple and suits the
topic
• Good imagery
• Nice fonts
• Good layout but not for TA
Negative
• Very static and set in place
• Has an adult feel to it too serious
• More simple with the use of lining is
nice but boring
• Looks like more text than image
makes it less visually pleasing for
my ta with a lower attention span
• Feels the sub heading looks to long
on this one and feels it should be
shortened.
Mock up 2 Positive:
• Looked like a students
note book
• Appropriate colour
scheme
• More appealing
• Well laid out
• Coloured text lessens
look of writing
• Good text to image
ratio
• Good balance between
serious and informal
Negative:
• Points are obvious
• Content may need
tweaking
Therefore I will include in my mag
I am sticking to mock up two but I will tweak the article
I will combine the colour scheme and incorporate the purple into
the second one and
Possible use the image from mockup one one mock up two if this
doesn't suit then I will have to retake an image which is more
appropriate
Audience Appeal:
Color scheme: Range of colour schemes
Appealing to both
Males and females
Reflect the content
Fresh
Current
Not too feminine
