Hello my name is Sarah Ingham and I’m here today to
convince you that my idea for a new magazine fit your
brief and present the best solution for your
organisations’ needs
“You have been commissioned by the northern echo to
produce a new magazine or newspaper product. Your
product could be in any style or genre but it must be self
financed through sales or advertising. You must also
produce your magazine for a specified audience segment
within the 16-25 age group”

HOW AM I GOING TO MEET THIS BRIEF?
oThe design of my magazine will have to appeal to the young
audience and attract them to read the magazine.

• My magazine is a Womens Lifestyle Magazine called
“Unique”
• I chose this genre because I am familiar with it.
• My USP- unlike other womens lifestyle magazine that purely
base their content on fashion and beauty my content
focuses on real, important current issues that affect
audience.
• I got my ideas for the content for my magazine from current
popular issues that affect the audience, for example the
increase in University fees and the rise in technology.
• I also got an idea from a subject I am taking at A Level, “Do
we speak another language”
• Doing genre research has allowed me to learn more about
how womens lifestyle magazine use different elements of
the magazine to intrigue and interest their audience. In

• My audience are 16 to 21 year old females
in the tribe “trendies”.
• I chose this particular tribe because they
want to know the latest trends.
• Their interests help me with advertising
• I have chosen an audience in
socioeconomic groups ABC1. This is
because I can use higher end
advertisements in the magazine as these
socioeconomic groups will be afford the
products advertised.

All four interviewees said this was
their favourite mock up. This is
because they prefer the layout.
They also prefer a
large image in the
article to balance out

“What’s your favourite part of the
article?” was the title design.
They also liked the colour
use describing them as
“girly” and they also liked
the fonts as they are

WHICH MOCK UP WILL I USE?
IMPROVEMENTS TO BE MADE…
• Change the pale pink coloured kicker to a different
colour because light pink on a white background is
difficult to read
• Include a different texture for the kicker because it
will make it stand out more and will add more
creativity to the layout.
• Add another image to make the whole layout look
more interesting and adding just one more won’t
• I will be using mock up 1 for my
magazine
• This is because it received the
most positive
feedback
• It is also my personal favourite

Why a profit???
o I have gained so much of a profit because I decided to
charge 12p per copy sold.
o I decided to charge this because on a Saturday (when
my magazine will be sold) the Northern Echo charges
more....o Therefore it I believe that I
should receive some of the
profits as my magazine will
be sold alongside the
newspaper.o This 12p will not be added to
the price the Northern Echo
has, it is included in the original
price.
Distribution method
o Selling it as a supplement but in the design/quality
of a free to view magazine
o Best of both
methods =
Better quality magazine as its similar to
the free to view magazine “Darlington
Together”
Selling it as a supplement will be
beneficial because of the Northern
Echo’s high readership.

Your product could be in any style or genre but it must be self financed through sales or advertising.   • 5. • My magazine is a Womens Lifestyle Magazine called “Unique” • I chose this genre because I am familiar with it. • My USP- unlike other womens lifestyle magazine that purely base their content on fashion and beauty my content focuses on real, important current issues that affect audience. • I got my ideas for the content for my magazine from current popular issues that affect the audience, for example the increase in University fees and the rise in technology. • I also got an idea from a subject I am taking at A Level, “Do we speak another language” • Doing genre research has allowed me to learn more about how womens lifestyle magazine use different elements of the magazine to intrigue and interest their audience.   • 10. • My audience are 16 to 21 year old females in the tribe “trendies”. • I chose this particular tribe because they want to know the latest trends. • Their interests help me with advertising • I have chosen an audience in socioeconomic groups ABC1. This is because I can use higher end advertisements in the magazine as these socioeconomic groups will be afford the products advertised. THE AUDIENCE
  • 12. All four interviewees said this was their favourite mock up. This is because they prefer the layout. They also prefer a large image in the article to balance out “Change the kicker design” “Include more images”
  • 13. The most common answer for “What’s your favourite part of the article?” was the title design. They also liked the colour use describing them as “girly” and they also liked the fonts as they are “Use more columns to have more structure in the article and space it “Don’t use as much variety of colour – it is too distracting”
  • 14. WHICH MOCK UP WILL I USE? IMPROVEMENTS TO BE MADE… • Change the pale pink coloured kicker to a different colour because light pink on a white background is difficult to read • Include a different texture for the kicker because it will make it stand out more and will add more creativity to the layout. • Add another image to make the whole layout look more interesting and adding just one more won’t • I will be using mock up 1 for my magazine • This is because it received the most positive feedback • It is also my personal favourite because I think it the most creative and appealing

Why a profit??? o I have gained so much of a profit because I decided to charge 12p per copy sold. o I decided to charge this because on a Saturday (when my magazine will be sold) the Northern Echo charges more....o Therefore it I believe that I should receive some of the profits as my magazine will be sold alongside the newspaper.o This 12p will not be added to the price the Northern Echo has, it is included in the original price.

Distribution method o Selling it as a supplement but in the design/quality of a free to view magazine o Best of both methods = Better quality magazine as its similar to the free to view magazine “Darlington Together” Selling it as a supplement will be beneficial because of the Northern Echo’s high readership. Cost effective compared to other strategies

  1. This is my brief…To summarise I need to produce a magazine or newspaper product for a certain genre for a particular audience between the ages of 16 and 25.

I chose to pick these topics because as they are current issues the audience will want to read more about the topics as they are affected by them.I got this idea from taking English language. This article will contain information about gender theories that I have learn about in the subject)

  5. Company magazine is the magazine that has given me the most inspiration regarding layout. This is because I like the different backgrounds/textures the magazine uses that makes the article more interesting to look at. These textures make the article look more unique which is what I want my magazine to be like.   8. The mock up stage involved me making two different versions of one of my magazine articles on InDesign and then I interviewed four people that fit into the target audience about my mock ups and their opinions on them.
  9. One negative was the kicker. Two of the interviewees found it difficult to read due to it being light pink text on a white backgroundEven though they said the larger image is more effective, the interviewees said that including another image would be even more effective to make it more interesting and get a bigger representation.

  11. Because it comes with the northern echo there is guaranteed readership because of the high readership the northern echo has. Doing it this way is also not too cost effective compared doing it to other strategies- Retail distribution and quality

And allows me to include good quality articles in my magazine as these topics I’m addressing inform the audience so a lot needs to be discussed) Because these are the top 5 locations by readership so in order for my magazine to be successful I must distribute to these areas.

Be accurate – I must take care not to publish inaccurate misleading or dosorted information including pictures/Respect privacy - It is unacceptable to photograph individuals in private places without their consent.Do not harass - must not engage in intimidation, harassment or persistent pursuit.Do not discriminate - Details of an individual's race, colour, religion, sexual orientation, physical or mental illness or disability must be avoided unless genuinely relevant to the story.There are also rules regarding children – a child under 16 must not interviewed or photographed unless a custodial parent has given consent
