Opera and theater share many similarities especially since the former is influenced by the latter. In his
text, A Short History of Opera, Donald Grout defines opera as a drama in music: a dramatic action,
exhibited on stage with scenery by actors in costume, the words conveyed entirely or for the most part
by singing, and the whole sustained and amplified by orchestral music (4). Opera literally translates to
work. The first known opera that was performed was in 1597. However, interestingly enough, the
word opera was not used until 1634 (Grout 1). The origins of seventeenth century opera can be traced
back to Greek drama and medieval theatre. Throughout the seventeenth century, many different kinds
of operas can be found from countries such as Italy, Germany, and England. In order to fully

Greek drama is said to be the model on which the creators of modern opera at the end of the sixteenth

that her learning disability affects her workforce, and her mental disability effects mostly on her social
participations. She would make mistakes at work, and having bipolar disorder mean she was easily

I have been waitressing almost two years, during this long period of time, I learned the importance of

Imagine with me this as an audience member, you are sitting amidst 1,000 other patrons in a glorious
concert hall, awaiting the arrival of the orchestra maestro to give a downbeat to all the musicians. The
normal concert buzz is in the air along with the pleasant chatter amongst the affluent concertgoers.
While taking a swift glance through the program, you notice that it is entirely blank. No names, no
sponsors, not even the names of musicians to be found. Only the back page, bearing this statement:
Good luck doing it without us! This is a simple example of what happened to Orchestre National de
Lille, a French orchestra, when the musicians began taking advantage of those who were running it.
Having majored in music at the collegiate level and also having been a student council member for the
Penn State Center for the Performing Arts, I can fully understand the critical role of the sponsors and
the inner mechanisms that run these organizations. My motivation to fill this need within the non
profit performing arts and development world is exactly what is leading me to pursue a graduate
degree in arts administration from a nationally recognized university. I see myself being placed in
roles of management and advocacy in the non profit sector and I feel that the knowledge gained from
this internship would be a vital part of my growth in this field.

The Renaissance altered centuries of thought in Europe. One figured who contributed to
revolutionizing though was the author Francois Rabelais who wrote comedic critiques of his world. In
his stories of Gargantua and Pantagruel the author critiques many aspects of sixteenth century life
especially the education system. He examines previous educational attitudes, as well as those during
his time. As a humanist thinker, Rabelais values education and reform. The author was extremely
familiar with the university system in France during the Renaissance because he himself studied in
these places. Francois Rabelais emphasizes that education has progressed since the Middle Ages, but
he also affirms problems still persist during the Renaissance period.
Rabelais critiques medieval education to demonstrate the flawed system prior to the Renaissance.
Rabelais finds issue with traditional scholastic debates pro et contra due to their loose connection to
seeking truth (M.A. Screech 30). He communicates his personal distress through Pantagruel s rants
about prior scholars glossing worthwhile texts (Rabelais 33). Glossing, or commentary by scholars,
was a popular scholastic pursuit before the Renaissance. Rabelais found it to detract from the texts
overall value. The author also uses Gargantua, Pantagruel s father, who lived during the prior period to

included Elmo, Big Bird, and Dora, all made in China. The recall was prompted by concerns about

subcontractor of a vendor that did not use certified paint. The subcontractor has been associated with

made in China, which is the second largest trading partner of the United States after Canada.

HOW MENTAL IMAGERY WORKS TO FACILITATE PERFORMANCE:There are many theories
and body of literature that tried to explain how imagery works but the most popular amongst them are
psychoneuromuscular, symbolic and informational theories.
Psychoneuromuscular Theory (Muscle Memory): This theory states that as athletes engage in sport
movement, their brains are constantly transmitting impulse to the muscles for execution of the
movement. Similar impulses occur in the brain and muscles when athletes imagine the movements
without actually performing them. Thus, the psychoneuromuscular theory asserts that vivid imagined
events produce innervations in our muscles similar to that produced by the actual physical execution
of the event. Coaches and athletes should know that mental imagery strengthens their muscle
memories by having the muscle respond in the correct sequence without actually executing the
movement, (William 2009).
Symbolic Learning Theory (Mental Blueprint) Sackett (1934): In this theory, imagery may function as
a coding system to help athletes acquire or understand movement patterns. All movements that we
make must first be encoded in our central narrow system, we must have a blue print or code their
movement into symbolic components, thus making the movement more familiar and perhaps more
automatic. For example, a gymnast can use imagery to cue himself, on the temporal and spatial
elements involved in performing a balance beam routine (Smith 2009) (William 2009).

day of joy and rest. While there should be a separation of church and state, Christmas is considered a

David Peter Reimer was a Canadian boy born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on August 22, 1965. David s
