Security Dilemm Spiral Model
Security Dilemma (spiral model)
What is a security dilemma ? Does it cause wars? Is the security dilemma confined to international
politics?
Introduction
National security is arguably the primary objective of political leaders and yet conflict and war
seems an inevitable aspect of international politics and thus a dominant theme in IR scholarship.
The security dilemma or so called spiral model is frequently used to explain the escalation of
conflict and onset of war in international politics, particularly paralleling the sequence of events
that prompted World War I and the super power arms race during the Cold War
. The question
remains, however, as a theoretical model, does the security dilemma trigger war? Perhaps a more
salient question given the rise in ethnic conflicts and security threats from non state actors since the
Cold War is can the security dilemma literature provide policy relevant guidance of how to deal
with these sub state threats to regional and perhaps international stability?
This response proceeds as follows: First, I define the term security dilemma as well as contextualize
its development within the IR scholarship. Second, I argue, the security dilemma concept coupled
with neorealist theoretical assumptions may indeed perpetuate a hostile international environment,
creating a self fulfilling prophecy effect. Instead, I suggest, the constructivist framework offers
much needed intersubjective understandings and ideational alternatives

The Pros And Cons Of Virtual Reality
Since the beginning of the 21st century, events like the 9/11 terrorist attacks, stock market crash,
and North Korea s missile tests, have tested humanity s strength. From uncontrollably weeping in
one s own room to interlocking arms in unity, humans react quite differently to hardships/tragedy;
nevertheless, all people want to feel connected to something greater. These actions are prompted by
adversity and sorrow. The time has come where technological advancements need to attend to the
broken and emotional distraught culture that these global issues have created. Rather than letting
technology advance beyond human emotion, technology must advance to nurture the needs of
humans. One technological advancement aimed at connecting humans on an emotional level is
virtual reality. Virtual reality is a computer generated simulation of a three dimensional image
/environment that can be interacted with by the user. It works by having the images respond to the
user s movement, thereby giving the user the sense of being immersed. This artificial environment
affords users the opportunity to explore the unknown and discover a universe of possibilities.
Virtual reality is the ultimate empathy machine. Movies are made up of small frames. These frames
are really just viewing windows, windows that transports one into another dimension. A movie only
places the audience in viewing position of the window, but virtual reality pushes the user beyond
the windows and frames of a movie, and

Fable For Tomorrow Summary
A Health Crisis; Facing Genetic Modification
Industrial Agriculture has casted a shadow of death upon the health of our environment and
bodies (Carson 49). In her essay Fable for Tomorrow, naturalist Rachel Carson alerts the public on
the inevitable danger rooted from the use of pesticides to the environment. She argues that the
interference with nature using GMO and pesticides create a danger for us, internally and
externally. Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) are living organisms whose genetic material
has been artificially manipulated through genetic engineering ( GMO Facts ). For instance, if you
have a tomato, and you want it to stay fresh for a longer period in cold temperatures you can take
the gene of a salmon that allows ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By educating people on GMO they learn how to identify these products and therefore, how to
avoid them. People can do this through public campaigning and voting against GMOs. One way
to identify if the food is free of genetic modification is by looking for the NON GMO project
stamp on the products case. We can also enforce building community farms in neighborhoods
where the residences can help to garden and care for the plants. This way people can get clean,
healthy food which they will benefit from and so will the surrounding environment. Most of their
fruits and vegetables would not be store bought, meaning the large GMO companies like
Monsanto, Bayer, and Syngenta will lose their buyers and profits will hopefully decrease. By doing
this more people will demand fresh, natural plants that will keep them

how he is made and not being able to grasp it fully. This represents the discovery factor, of him
trying to find out more about himself, and later his purpose. The envy factor is prominent in

Dominantly Starkey but it is seen in all figures. He s described as a murderer and no stranger to

Educational Psychology Reflection Paper
Over the course of this semester, I have had the opportunity to learn about educational psychology. I
have always enjoyed psychology and was especially interested in how it applied to teaching in the
classroom. There were five specific concepts we discussed over the semester that especially
interested me. I found that homogenous and heterogeneous grouping, extrinsic and intrinsic
motivation, operant conditioning, cooperative learning, and divergent versus convergent thinking
are five psychological concepts that every teacher should learn about in preparation for teaching.
In order to promote the utmost success of students, numerous studies have been conducted to
determine the ideal organization strategies for grouping within classrooms. There are two major
types of grouping, heterogeneous and homogeneous. Heterogeneous grouping can be described as
randomly grouping students together. The teacher does not group based on any specific criteria and
attempts to involve all types of students within each group. In further detail, there may be one
student who overachieves at mathematics and a student that performs below average in
mathematics within the same group. Homogeneous grouping is arranging students together based
on their academic achievement in particular subjects. For instance, a homogeneous group will
contain students who are all around the same reading level. There are two divisions within
homogeneous grouping. One is within class grouping. This means that the students

At one point during our walk there appeared two deers, typically anxious in character, near one of

Something I found particularly fascinating was the intricate process behind making a tomb that is

reminds me: I d like to visit Napoleon s tomb.
More about Donggureung: you re not allowed close to the tombs. I found that disappointing. It

visitors, and one reserved for the spirits of the kings and queens who rest there, which people were
obedient to.

Walt Disney s Influence On America
Walt Disney started as an illustrator in a small company and became one of the most influential
figures during the 20th century. Walt Disney is well known as the founder of the Walt Disney
Company and the creator of a character named Mickey Mouse. His cartoons brought joy to people
through unique characters and colorful backgrounds. His ultimate goal was to make people happy
as Walt quotes ВЁMy business is making people, especially children, happy (The Walt Disney
Family Museum). Although animation may be his biggest known contribution to America, Disney
also had influence on economy and politics. Growing up with two understanding parents and a
loving brother, Walt Disney made his way to became one of the most influential public figures. Walt

The United Artists funded Walt with his use of the Technicolor, expecting Walt to use minimum
amount of color to make films more vivid. Many artists did not use Technicolor at that time
because it cost so much compared to the traditional black and white films. Although Roy Disney
was cautious about using color in the films, Walt insisted that his animation would be more
delightful for children if he used color. Walt made his first color film in one of the films in the
Silly Symphony series called Flowers and Trees . It took him three months to carefully wipe off
the back of the existing cells to repaint them with variety of colors. Despite the cost of the colors
used, the profit that was made from Flowers and Trees allowed Walt to be determined to make
future Silly Symphony films in color. This one success in making color cartoons encouraged
Walt to improve more and risk using more money to make the films more colorful. His
motivation to use color was so strong that he was willing to go against the United Artists to
achieve his vision of a perfect and cheerful cartoon. Walt later made another film called Funny
Little Bunnies , which was about cute bunnies coloring eggs for easter. This film used the whole
spectrum of colors, which was against United Artists demand to use the maximum of 20 colors to
save money (Korkis). By risking his reputation against United Artists, Walt explored the possible
future of colored films and spread the use of Technicolor. His attempt to use color set a
precedence to the quality of cartoons and encouraged more production of colored films. The
colored films created in the Disney studio made Disney overwhelmingly popular and advanced the
common idea of black and white

Joan Of Arc, By Jeanne D Arc
Contents Introduction1 Body3 Conclusion7 References8 Introduction Jeanne d Arc, better
known as Joan of Arc, was born on the 6th of January in Domremy, which is a village in France.
At the time France was in conflict with England. This encounter was better known as The
Hundred Years War. The Hundred Years War was a series of conflicts which took place from
1337 to 1453 by the House of Plantagenet, rulers of the Kingdom of England, against the House of
Valois, rulers of the Kingdom of France, for control of the Kingdom of France. Both of Joan s
parents were farmers, she was not taught to read or write, but her god loving mother instilled in
her a deep love for the Catholic Church and its teachings which is what played a role in Joan
being known as the heroine of France by playing a very significant role in the Hundred Years
War. She received visions from St Michael and from God regarding the war in which she
promised Charles, who was heir to the throne at the time, that she would give him his rightful seat
on the throne. At the time there were false accusations that Charles was not supposed to be King,
so Henry V was king over both England and France. In 1429 Joan convinced Charles, the Dauphin
(heir to the crown) to send her to the battles, saying she had received visions from God telling her
to drive out the English. Joan brought an inspiring spirit to the battle that increased the soldiers
morale to take the battle

Fitzgerald s Use Of Narrative Voice In The Great Gatsby
How have writers used narrative voice and/or characterization to explore a social or intellectual
concern in the two works you have studied?
For ages, authors have strived to convey their interpretation of the social concerns and themes,
using the literary texts as a medium. Their texts were not only intended for conveying, but also to
form the basis for social and intellectual change. In Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi and Great Gatsby
by F. Scott Fitzgerald, these key concepts have been clearly addressed. Persepolis is a graphic novel
, portraying the life of Marji and how she experiences social changes around her in Iran. The Great
Gatsby is a literary novel, set in the 1920 s, reflects on the American society and social status ...

Scott Fitzgerald has effectively used characterization and narrative voice to explore various
social concerns. The novel was produced during the 1920 s, referred to as the roaring twenties
or the jazz age. The fruit of the economic boom also gave rise to many social issues which
involve alcoholism, class, and domestic violence. The class in that period was divided into the
new money, old money and no money. Fitzgerald very well integrated this social concern using
characterization. Division of the west egg, East egg and the valley of ashes symbolized this
social concern. Also, Tom Buchanan in the novel was characterized as an arrogant and
hypocritical bully. People who have been brought up rich are expected have characteristics
similar to Tom. Another social problem was incomplete and incompatible relationships among
people. This was portrayed by the relationship between Daisy and Tom. While Nick, the narrator,
judges the life of Daisy and Tom based on their lavish house. Yet, the narrator soon learns the
imperfections in their life, portrayed by narrator voice such as Fragilely Bound and French
Widows . Due to the economic boom, alcoholism was very prevalent in that period. Fitzgerald
uses a unique way of deriving this social problem. Nick, the narrator, came to New York to earn
money. However, his motifs were changed and he was shown to have been severely influenced by
alcoholism. He also received treatment to overcome this after Gatsby died. Also, the narrator use

The Scythe and the Scalpel: Dissecting the Sterilizations of Native American Women in the 1970
s In the old days, genocide used to be so simple. Such things as biological warfare used to keep
Indians warm with small pox infested blankets furnished by the United States government, and the
only thing barren and infertile was the land set aside for reservations. In the 1970s, genocide
became a little more complex. Biological warfare invaded the reproductive rights of Native
American women, making their wombs as barren and infertile as reservation land. The sterilization
policies during this time perpetuated the genocidal tendencies that have made the eugenics

4). In fact, the federally funded Indian Health Service, the very agency that was supposed to protect
and provide for Indians, was the perpetrator of these sterilizations.
The American Indian Policy Review Commission s report on the health of Native Americans said
it best when they stated, the federal responsibility to provide health services to Indians has its
roots in the unique moral, historical, and treaty obligations of the federal government, no court has
ever ruled on the precise nature of that legal basis nor defined the specific legal rights for Indians
created by those obligations (DeFine 1997 p.4). Thus, the Indian Health Service has always worked
in strange and ambiguous ways.
By the time sterilization for both the poor and minorities became an official sanction in 1970, and
reservation populations became main targets of this policy, the IHS was ready to initiate its
campaign against Indian women. Policy turned into perpetration, and people turned into victims.
For example, in 1970 a twenty six year old Native American woman went into the office of a Los
Angeles doctor and asked for a womb transplant (Johansen 1998). She was devastated when she was

Math Career Progression
Math; the indecipherable mess of numbers and letters that consumes the sanity of countless high
school students year after year. I, however, am not one of those students.
Ever since I was a child, I have harbored a wholehearted passion for mathematics. Whether it was
multiplying two digit numbers in elementary school or using my knowledge of trigonometry and
complex numbers to find the area of a figure on the imaginary plane in twelfth grade, the
challenges posed by numerical problems acted as a source of adrenaline at every stage of my
life. Before long, I had discovered the field of actuarial science and found myself becoming
absolutely entranced by every aspect of the profession. With a few months of careful consideration
and consultation, I was determined to pursue a career as an actuary.
Now, as I was entering my freshman year of high school, I had already devised an ardent aspiration
in my mind, and I resolved to work tirelessly towards that goal. By researching about the basic
requirements and duties of an actuary, I planned elaborately for the years ahead. To begin with, I
opted to take mathematics and statistics at the CIE IGCSE and Advanced Levels, ensuring that

What Is Pedagogical Content Knowledge
pedagogical content knowledge is the transformation of subject matter, pedagogical, and contextual
knowledge into a unique form, which is called the transformative model. The transformative model
implies that these initial knowledge bases are inextricably combined into a new form of knowledge,
pedagogical content knowledge, in which the parent domain may be discovered only through
complicated analysis. The resulting amalgam is more interesting and powerful than its constituent
parts (Gess Newsome, 1990).
In the integrative model, in contrast, pedagogical content knowledge does not exist as a domain of
knowledge and can be most readily explained by the intersection (Gess Newsome, 1990) of the
subject matter, pedagogical, and contextual knowledge. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
First, pedagogical content knowledge is knowledge for teaching (Ball, 2008). Second, I conclude
that pedagogical content knowledge is knowledge for teaching that is a transformation of
knowledge of subject matter, knowledge of students understanding, and knowledge of pedagogy or
instructional strategies. Of these three kinds of knowledge, knowledge of subject matter is likely
the most significant constituent. For example, mathematics teachers need to know mathematics in
a way that makes them able to teach mathematics conceptually as well as procedurally. Without a
profound understanding of mathematics, mathematics teachers cannot help their students
understand a mathematical concept by providing appropriate representations of it. What is more,
only when mathematics teachers understand mathematics deeply are they capable of using and
adapting their knowledge flexibly according to the needs of their students. Knowledge of
mathematics enables mathematics teachers to provide ideas of how to present a mathematical
concept in a particular way and to explain why representations would be

Medication Error And Its Adverse Effects On The Elderly
Medication Error and its adverse effects to the elderly Firehiwot Bealy University of Regina
Medication Error and Its Adverse Effects Older adults are at high risk for adverse effects of
medication error more than their counteract younger adults. This is because they depend on more
than one medication in order to treat or prevent disease, syndromes and sickness (Lindenberg,
2010). It is inevitable that the elderly face adverse effects of drugs while on medication
especially when they still live independently. However, chances of errors in hospitals and care
homes are more frequent when the medication process connects several departments (Belen et. al.,
2009). Therefore, tactical measures are required in the provision of drug therapy in order to
optimize safe medication in older adults. This paper discusses the issue by analyzing the existing
structure of administering medication, reviewing the occurrence of medication errors; evaluating
systems developed to advance safe medication administration. Finally, addressing the implication

In 1829, Barrett s mother passed away. Due to the abolition of slavery, the Barretts income
decreased tremendously. In 1832, Edward Barrett was forced to sell his rural estate at an auction.
After selling their land, the family rented cottages in a coastal town, where they lived for the next
three years of their life. After that time in their life, the family moved to London, where they
permanently settled. In 1833, after the move, Barrett published her translation of Aeschylus s

Barrett s health continued to decline, she moved in with her brother, Edward, near the sea of

forced to move back to London, she was physically and emotionally weak, but that didn t stop here

Conviction-Trusted Advisors
In the modern age of financial practice, securities salespeople no longer call themselves brokers
or registered representatives. They now go by names like financial consultant or investment
specialist. Many advisors continue to charge commissions and work in a mainly transaction
based model, but many have also converted to a fee based practice, charging management fees to
oversee client assets. Most financial advisors work for one of the major brokerage firms, banks, or
insurance companies. There is also a relatively small but growing contingent of independent
advisors who are not affiliated with any outside financial entity. Most of these advisors are either
solo practitioners or small partnerships of advisors working together. There are, of course, many

Trusted advisors understand that the most prudent course of action is not always the easiest one
to take. This is especially true with money and markets, where emotions can run high, often
causing poor decisions to be made. It is important to take the time to explain the pros and cons of
various strategies, and help a client understand which approach would be best for them. In
contrast, a facilitator may allow or even encourage a client to make decisions that might feel good
in the short run but are counterproductive long term. They might do this out of fear of losing
business or a preference for expediency. Facilitators generally do not bring discipline and
rationality to the investment process, which is a big part of the value of having an advisor. This is
unfortunate because in emotional times clients can benefit from hearing a rational and independent

Examples Of Id Ego And Superego In Lord Of The Flies
Sigmund Freud created the structural model of personality that describes the id, ego, and
superego parts of a person. Id is represented as the devil and based on the pleasure and benefiting
themselves. Ego is the angel and devil together, where there is balance of good and bad. Lastly,
superego is shown as the angel with good behavior and morals. In Golding s book Lord of the
Flies, he uses Jack, Ralph, and Piggy to represent Sigmund Freuds theory of the three personalities:
id, ego, and superego.
Throughout the book, it can be noticed that Jack has the id personality. He wants to kill the pigs
not for the benefit of the group, but for himself. He can also be seen as the devil because of how
he acts. When Ralph and Jack were talking to each ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When the group were discussing about the fire, Piggy says, Cos the smoke s a signal and we
can t be rescued if we don t have smoke (173). Piggy is working to help out the boys by trying to
inform them about their situation, and how they can fix it together. Piggy is the voice of reason
out of all the boys by telling them how things will affect them as a group, and that is just like
how the superego tells the ego on how the action will influence society. Piggy always wants what
is best for the group, and wants them all to get off the island safely. When the group decided to
move the fire from the mountain, Golding describes, Piggy was so full of delight and
expanding liberty in Jack s departure, so full of pride in his contribution to the good of society,
that he helped to fetch wood (129). Piggy wants to guide the boys on the right path of survival,
and enjoys when he is able to help. His involvement in book by helping Ralph and the other boys
is based on the focus of the superego to help the needs of society.
Golding s Lord of the Flies takes the structural model of personality and uses it to represent Jack,
Ralph, and Piggy in the novel. He uses them to show how they interact with each other in society.
He wants the readers to understand that the id makes decisions and actions that feels good for
themselves, and not for others. The superego wants to help out society, and follow good morals,
but often gets overpowered and ignored by the id. Lasty, the ego is a balance of the two, and
listens to both the superego and the

Hidden Characters In Hidden Figures
Of all passages throughout the book Hidden Figures, Margot Lee Shetterly s depiction of Dorothy
Vaughn s intimidating journey to the city of Hampton resonates with me the most. The Colored
waiting room at the Greyhound bus station served as the checkpoint for an in between world.
Dorothy boarded the bus, and with each passing mile, life in Farmville faded into the distance.
(Shetterly, 22) This passage from Shetterly s novel seems to foreshadow my own journey that I
will soon undertake. Just like Dorothy I will be starting the next phase of my life. I will leave my
hometown alone for the first time and depart my comfort zone in the pursuit of opportunity and a
greater future.
As it so happens, NASA Langley Research Center is less than an hour from my home. Many of
the areas and neighborhoods which the author describes I have either heard about or personally
visited. Growing up as a military dependent, I can also identify with many of the descriptions and
issues that Ms. Shetterly describes in the book. When I was young, I travelled throughout Hampton
Roads often, as my mother owned a store in a mall nearby. Having grown up in the same area and
experienced similar things as the women of West area computer pool, I can identify with the book,
as well as the events and people described within it.
Previously when I watched rockets fly into space, I never before thought of the people working at
the research center in order to make it happen. As a child, I would always

National Health And Nutrition Survey
Government Involvement in Obesity It is evident today in society that obesity levels have
increased throughout the years. According to the National Health and Nutrition Survey, more
than two out of three adults are considered to be overweight or obese, and one third of children
from ages six to nineteen are considered to be overweight or obese ( Overweight and Obesity
Statistics ). This is a dramatic increase since the 1960 s, almost doubled. There is not enough
awareness in the United States on the issue. We are one of the most overweight countries of the
world. The government must obtain a more positive and enlightened role in America s obesity
levels. Why has the obesity rated doubled in adults and tripled in children since the 1960 s?
There is a very simple explanation. Americans are not aware of the severity of the problems with
being overweight. The government and media do not emphasize the importance of being healthy
and in shape. Obesity has been defined as a culture bound phenomenon. In the United States,
many have just accepted this epidemic to be normal. As the years fly by, we begin to not take
notice on people s body weights. This may because the media is starting to portray a new slogan
of everybody is beautiful no matter the size and shape. Although this is a very positive message, it
allows the public to believe that being overweight is acceptable. In reality, being overweight affects
your heath in numerous, horrible ways. Being overweight means you

Categorical Proposition, Categorical, And Categorical...
Categorical Proposition
A categorical proposition, or categorical statement, is a proposition that declares or denies that all or
particular of the members of one type (the subject term) are comprised in another (the establish
term). The study of opinions consuming categorical statements (i.e., syllogisms) forms a significant
branch of deductive reasoning that initiated with the Ancient Greeks. The Ancient Greeks such as
Aristotle recognized four primary distinct kinds of Categorical Proposition and provided them
standard forms (now regularly termed A, E, I, and O), formerly deduced mathematically by John
Venn and George Boole in the nineteenth era.
What do affirmative propositions have in common?
Affirmative propositions say All S is P. It is general because it talks about each associate of S. It
is affirmative because it says that each member of S is involved in P. A true sample of a universal
affirmative proposition is Entirely dogs are animals. We curtail this proposition and cry it the A

If We Must Die
The pen is mightier than the sword, Claude McKay s poem is proof that this saying has some
authenticity to it. This saying was first documented in 1839 by a man named Edward Bulwer
Lytton during one of his most historical plays Cardinal Richelieu. The saying means that you
could accomplish more by communicating and using your words. McKay lived in the U.S.
around the time that racism was at its highest point, and the Ku Klux Klan was out committing
hate crimes. I ll explain McKay s poems purpose, then I ll discuss its meaning and effect, and
finally I ll talk about whether or not this poem was a rebellious act. To begin with, its important to

The Code Of Silence Essays
The Code of Silence
Some argue that corrupt police officers are simply the product of a corrupt culture of the agency
they work for. These officers are socially introduced to a number of informal rules when they
begin employment. This process and these rules serve two main purposes. First, this process is
designed to minimize the chances of external or internal controls being mobilized to address the
behaviors and, secondly, to keep corrupt activities at a level that is acceptable and likely
undetectable. The rule most often referred to in this connection, is the Code of Silence. Officers
are socialized into not cooperating with investigations regarding fellow officers. Whether or not the
officer participates in corrupt activities for financial gain, an officer s adherence to the Code of
Silence places them squarely amongst the corrupt of the profession (Price, 1972).
Some officers feel that discussing police transgressions regarding behavior or expressing worries
about corruption makes them appear weak or soft . Some officers are uncertain whether certain
gifts, such as flowers from a citizen saying thank you to an officer, are appropriate to accept
(Westmarland, 2005). This uncertainty on the part of officers contributes to the Code of Silence
that at times appears to be present in law enforcement.
The Code of Silence is not simply something which applies only to the patrol officer or the officer
that does not hold rank within the department. The

Examples Of Stereotypes In The Simpsons
One of the beloved grandfathers of television history has been Grandpa Abraham Simpson from
The Simpsons who demonstrates how we interact with the geriatric population in America.
Although Grandpa Simpson shows up in many gags throughout the series, I will be focusing on

Grandpa vs. Sexual Inadequacy focuses on the relationship between Grandpa Simpson and his son,
Homer, while he helps Homer s intimacy issues. The Front involves his grandchildren, Bart and

Student showcases the other residents at Grandpa s retirement home where Bart is forced to

older characters on television shows are portrayed in a negative light and The Simpsonsare no

War is often followed by change; World War I is no exception. World War I is often labeled the
cause for the rise of a feminine revolution the flapper . Before the term flapper began to describe
the young independently minded woman of the early Twenties (Mowry 173), the definition that is
most prominent today, it had a 300 year long history. The young woman of the 1920 s was new and

The car, a new invention, was another tool in their rebellion; it was fast and could be reckless.
Flappers used cars for three purposes: to drive, to ride and for petting . Petting was the sexual
activity practiced in the back seats of cars. People also had petting parties, which mortified the older
generation.
The carefree attitude of the younger generation was attributed to the psychological trauma caused
by the unprecedented casualty level of the war. This generation had the theory that each day might
be the last, therefore lived it to the fullest. This mental change was accompanied by a change in the
physical styles of women. Fashion trends that were held in high regard by tradition were
challenged to demonstrate the new risquГ© way of life.
The Gibson glamour girl preceding the flapper wore long tresses, a high neck starched shirt, and a
long skirt over restrictive undergarments. The flapper did not adhere to these types of restrictions.
Pantaloons and corsets, the Gibson girl s undergarments, were not conducive to the dancing of the
flapper or the need for physical freedom. They were replaced by underwear called step ins

Understanding Literacy, and Health Literacy
An understanding of literacy, and health literacy is crucial to understand their impact on client

of these terms. Literacy is a multilayered, dynamic and complex topic; however, in short literacy is
a set of skills including reading, writing oral skills, numeracy skills, and skills that enable us to
acquire knowledge and information (Keefe Copeland, 2011). Literacy can be understood through
various theoretical lenses. Keefe Copeland also highlight five principles we must keep in mind
when thinking about literacy (2011). Firstly, all people are capable of acquiring literacy, however
methods of acquiring literacy vary greatly. Literacy is also a human right, given its ability to shape

Michigan public and charter schools (Mead, 2017). Not only is it important to determine what
constitutes achievement in regard to education, but it is important to identify the factors that can
affect it. Achievement should not only be thought of as the amount of intellectual ability a person
possesses, but additionally as the ability to question, think critically, collaborate and synthesize
information ( Primer: Education, 2014). A report by Michael Bennet... Show more content on

Limited family income will make it more difficult for a student to have access to the same
amount of educational supports at home that a student from a higher income family would have
such as books, electronics, and tutoring, to name a few (Nokali, Bachman, Votruba Drzal, 2010).
Illegal activities and gangs are more prevalent in lower income neighborhoods and can have
negative influences on the amount of effort a student puts into their studies (Willingham, 2011).
Less access to proper nutrition and healthcare can lead to increased absenteeism and reduced
access to instruction (Kapinga, 2014). An increased level of mental health issues and distress can
also be attributed to low SES (Baum, Garafalo, Yali, 1999). Any or all of the factors mentioned
above can produce chronic stress which can negatively affect achievement (Kapinga, 2014).
Students have also been shown to lack the motivation to pursue a post secondary education if there
is no role model at home, such as a parent who has earned a college degree, to follow ( Identifying
Factors, n.d.). In spite of the negative factors that a student might experience as a result of coming
from a low SES, there are some positive attributes that have been shown to have a mitigating effect
on student achievement. Johnson, 2006, reported that a high level of intelligence

Dear Mom And Dad,. I Completely Understand Why You Are
Dear Mom and Dad, I completely understand why you are concerned about my use of marijuana
not only for the well being of this family but also for my own health and future. I definitely
understand your concerns, but you need to understand that you grew up in a completely different
generation than me. Marijuana use is very common now days not only in The United States but
all around the world. Many people who you interact with every day have at one point in their
lives or even currently smoke marijuana, yet they are still able support their families, have a
steady job, and even in my situation get a good education. One of the reasons you haven t realized
this is because there are no long term effects and while on the drug most people are... Show more

Now I understand that the two of you believe that marijuana is a gateway drug but I have done
excessive research and I can assure you that it is in in no shape or form a gateway drug . The
gateway theory argues that because heroin, cocaine and methamphetamine users often used
marijuana before graduating to harder drugs, it must be a gateway to harder drug use. The
theory implies that there is a causal mechanism that biologically sensitizes drug users, making
them more willing to try and more desirous of harder drugs. Yet the gateway hypothesis doesn t
make sense to those who use marijuana or have used in the past. Research shows that the vast
majority of marijuana users do not go on to use hard drugs. Many users compare their daily
cannabis habit with dependency on caffeine. The UK Department of Health say Cannabis is a
weakly addictive drug but does induce dependence in a significant minority of heavy users. If you
are a regular cannabis smoker (every day) and you stop smoking, you will experience some of the
following withdrawal symptoms: restlessness, irritability, mild agitation, insomnia, nausea, sleep
disturbance, sweats, and intense dreams. These symptoms, however, are mild and short lived,
lasting 2 to 4 days. With such negligible withdrawal symptoms, it is not surprising that quitting
marijuana is so easy, especially for someone with very strong will power, such as myself.

Andrew Carnegie s Gospel Of Wealth
In his article Wealth , Andrew Carnegie argues for the wealth to give back their wealth to the
community by providing public institutions of various kinds ... [to] improve the general condition
of the people (Foner 30). Carnegie uses this article to promote his Gospel of Wealth idea and
provide his interpretation of the changing America. Carnegie s Gospel of Wealthstated that those
who accumulated money had an obligation to use it to promote the advancement of society
(Foner 28). Carnegie s articles focuses on the themes of Capitalism and Inequality, which
continue to shape society. Carnegie was a wealthy man himself, but he practiced exactly what he
preached. He notices how American society has revolutionized and created the divide between
the rich and the poor as it changed. Carnegie compares the American past equality to the equality
experienced among the Sioux Indians. Carnegie does not disapprove of the change, but
recognizes it as highly beneficial (Foner 29). According to Carnegie, the evidence of the
changing society is present in the contrast between the palace of the millionaire and the cottage of
the laborer (Foner 29). Although Carnegie recognizes the divided between rich and poor, he does
not see it as a bad thing, nor does he believe that people should stop obtaining wealth. Carnegie
believes that the wealthy should use their money to provide for good instead of hoarding great
sums all their lives (Foner 29). Carnegie approves of the implementation

Auditory System Essay
The world contains all kinds of energy that translates into information about what we see, hear,
smell, touch and taste. A sensory system is a part of the nervous system responsible for processing
specific sensory information. The components of a sensory system include sensory receptors, neural
pathways, and parts of the brain involved in sensory perception. To begin, energy from the
environment stimulates the receptor cells in whichever sense organ is being used. If this
information were auditory, the ear would convert sound waves in the air into electrical impulses
that would further be interpreted by the brain as sound. A sound wave first enters the pinna, the
fleshy part of the ear on the outside of the body. It then travels through... Show more content on

The movements of the membranes then send the vibrations down the scala tympani. A structure
called the Organ of Corti, which is situated on the basilar membrane, becomes stimulated as the
membrane vibrates and sends nerve impulses to the brain. Within the Organ of Corti are a group
of specialized cells called hair cells, which are covered by the tectorial membrane. As the basilar
membrane vibrates, the hair cells are bents and push up against the tectorial membrane. This
causes the hair cells to fire and send nerve impulses to the auditory cortex on each of the brains
hemispheres through the cochlear nerve. How we determine pitch can be explained with two
different theories. The Place Theory states that the entire basilar membrane does not vibrate at
once so different parts of the basilar membrane respond to different frequencies of sound. Lower
frequency sounds vibrate the basilar membrane near the apex of the cochlea while higher
frequency sounds produce vibrations closer to the base. The Frequency Theory states that the
frequency of firing matches the frequency of the sound wave. Hearing loss can occur for a
number of reasons. Damage to the eardrum due to age and prolonged exposure to loud noise
may cause the hairs or nerve cells in the cochlea to wear out and become less effective. A buildup
of earwax can block the ear canal and prevent of sound waves from entering the eardrum.

A Brief Review Of The Watsons Go To Birmingham-1963 By...
One of the characters from the book The Watsons go to Birmingham 1963 by Christopher Paul
Curtis, is Bumphead, who is Byron s best friend and fellow juvenile delinquent. One of his traits
is bully, he bully many kids including his own brother. He bullies them either for their
appearance or just for the fun of it. Bumphead bully Rufus for the way he dresses because Rufus
doesn t have much clothes. An example of his bully is when Bumphead put butter on Byron s
head, this caused Byron s dad to cut all his hair. This shows that Bumphead is a mean and bad
young boy who likes to bully others. He doesn t care about what can be the result of his bully to
other kids. I do not agree with Bumphead s behavior because he can get in a big trouble doing...

story to teachers, presidents, farmers, ambassadors, and schoolchildren all over the world. She
dug in the dirt, planted seedling, and spoke about women s rights. With everyone she met, she

The Morality Of White Man s Burden
Just as the natives are overwhelmed by fear, the whites are also affected, but in a different manner
than the black natives. The white people fear that the Natives will take back their land and get rid
of the whites. The whites oppress the natives in order to curb that fear, controlling
Crawford 6 them and making them bend to their will. In South Africa, the imperial whites have
taken over everything in the country, in essence capturing the natives. The natives are suppressed
with low paying and hard jobs, little to no education, and essentially no social structure. Without
this education, the natives learn and obtain little to no skills. Without good paying jobs, they
have no wealth or prosperity. Arthur Jarvis says, It is not permissible to watch its destruction,
and to replace it by nothing, or by so little, that a whole people deteriorates, physically and
morally (Paton 179). Jarvis is saying that because there is no tribal integrity, the natives have little
to no meaning, as the tribal system is the only way of life they know. These things cause
regression into chaos and dominance of whites over them. All things are done because the whites
are afraid of the potential power of the colloquial mass of natives. In order to persuade themselves
that white oppression is moral, white people use the logic behind White Man s Burden. Arthur
Jarvis explains this in his writings that whites justify their motives because of philosophical or
religious ideals. Jarvis

King William The Drinking Man s Diet
King William I was a Norman during the Middle Ages. Normans were mostly known for fighting
and feasting, so they were probably big and strong. King William was one of the largest men to
rule a country. He was teased by many people for being so fat they even made remarks saying he
was pregnant. He was getting too big to ride his hors; people could tell that the horse was
suffering from him. According to Mickey Bumbar in his blog Lords of The Drinks, William was
one of the first persons to go on a weight loss diet. Mickey wrote that in 1087 William started his
diet which consisted of lying in bed and only drinking alcohol. Along then came Fletcherism during
the 19th and 20th century. This diet or health plan was brought up by Horace Fletcher.... Show more

What peoples beliefs are can also affect their diet, they may become vegetarian or vegan which
can be very healthy if executed the right way. A lot of studies have been done that relate stress
and weight gain, so stress can definitely influence the way a person eats. Not only can it be
academically but also social kind of stress can contribute to unhealthy choices, for example, after
a bad breakup people actually do tend to eat more sweets and just sit around. Information on
what people can do different in their diets would be very helpful; having a better knowledge on
healthier diets would help people recognize what they are doing wrong and how to fix it. Many
times people turn to fad diets because the fastest way and easiest place to get information from,
now a days, is going on the internet and that s were so many fad diets are being advertised.
Time, it is apparently a hard thing to find in college, no one has time to go out to the store and
buy groceries much less cook them, leading people to find something they can make quick in order
to go back and hit the books or the television, a quick meal most of the time isn t the best thing.
These were some of the main reasons mentioned by the students that seem to affect eating behaviors

  • 3. Security Dilemm Spiral Model Security Dilemma (spiral model) What is a security dilemma ? Does it cause wars? Is the security dilemma confined to international politics? Introduction National security is arguably the primary objective of political leaders and yet conflict and war seems an inevitable aspect of international politics and thus a dominant theme in IR scholarship. The security dilemma or so called spiral model is frequently used to explain the escalation of conflict and onset of war in international politics, particularly paralleling the sequence of events that prompted World War I and the super power arms race during the Cold War . The question remains, however, as a theoretical model, does the security dilemma trigger war? Perhaps a more salient question given the rise in ethnic conflicts and security threats from non state actors since the Cold War is can the security dilemma literature provide policy relevant guidance of how to deal with these sub state threats to regional and perhaps international stability? This response proceeds as follows: First, I define the term security dilemma as well as contextualize its development within the IR scholarship. Second, I argue, the security dilemma concept coupled with neorealist theoretical assumptions may indeed perpetuate a hostile international environment, creating a self fulfilling prophecy effect. Instead, I suggest, the constructivist framework offers much needed intersubjective understandings and ideational alternatives ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Pros And Cons Of Virtual Reality Since the beginning of the 21st century, events like the 9/11 terrorist attacks, stock market crash, and North Korea s missile tests, have tested humanity s strength. From uncontrollably weeping in one s own room to interlocking arms in unity, humans react quite differently to hardships/tragedy; nevertheless, all people want to feel connected to something greater. These actions are prompted by adversity and sorrow. The time has come where technological advancements need to attend to the broken and emotional distraught culture that these global issues have created. Rather than letting technology advance beyond human emotion, technology must advance to nurture the needs of humans. One technological advancement aimed at connecting humans on an emotional level is virtual reality. Virtual reality is a computer generated simulation of a three dimensional image /environment that can be interacted with by the user. It works by having the images respond to the user s movement, thereby giving the user the sense of being immersed. This artificial environment affords users the opportunity to explore the unknown and discover a universe of possibilities. Virtual reality is the ultimate empathy machine. Movies are made up of small frames. These frames are really just viewing windows, windows that transports one into another dimension. A movie only places the audience in viewing position of the window, but virtual reality pushes the user beyond the windows and frames of a movie, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In her essay Fable for Tomorrow, naturalist Rachel Carson alerts the public on the inevitable danger rooted from the use of pesticides to the environment. She argues that the interference with nature using GMO and pesticides create a danger for us, internally and externally. We can also enforce building community farms in neighborhoods where the residences can help to garden and care for the plants. • 7. Educational Psychology Reflection Paper Over the course of this semester, I have had the opportunity to learn about educational psychology. I have always enjoyed psychology and was especially interested in how it applied to teaching in the classroom. There were five specific concepts we discussed over the semester that especially interested me. I found that homogenous and heterogeneous grouping, extrinsic and intrinsic motivation, operant conditioning, cooperative learning, and divergent versus convergent thinking are five psychological concepts that every teacher should learn about in preparation for teaching. In order to promote the utmost success of students, numerous studies have been conducted to determine the ideal organization strategies for grouping within classrooms. There are two major types of grouping, heterogeneous and homogeneous. Heterogeneous grouping can be described as randomly grouping students together. The teacher does not group based on any specific criteria and attempts to involve all types of students within each group. In further detail, there may be one student who overachieves at mathematics and a student that performs below average in mathematics within the same group. Homogeneous grouping is arranging students together based on their academic achievement in particular subjects. For instance, a homogeneous group will contain students who are all around the same reading level. There are two divisions within homogeneous grouping. One is within class grouping. This means that the students ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The United Artists funded Walt with his use of the Technicolor, expecting Walt to use minimum amount of color to make films more vivid. Many artists did not use Technicolor at that time because it cost so much compared to the traditional black and white films. Although Roy Disney was cautious about using color in the films, Walt insisted that his animation would be more delightful for children if he used color. Walt made his first color film in one of the films in the Silly Symphony series called Flowers and Trees . It took him three months to carefully wipe off the back of the existing cells to repaint them with variety of colors. Despite the cost of the colors used, the profit that was made from Flowers and Trees allowed Walt to be determined to make future Silly Symphony films in color. This one success in making color cartoons encouraged Walt to improve more and risk using more money to make the films more colorful. His motivation to use color was so strong that he was willing to go against the United Artists to achieve his vision of a perfect and cheerful cartoon. Walt later made another film called Funny Little Bunnies , which was about cute bunnies coloring eggs for easter. This film used the whole spectrum of colors, which was against United Artists demand to use the maximum of 20 colors to save money (Korkis). By risking his reputation against United Artists, Walt explored the possible future of colored films and spread the use of Technicolor. His attempt to use color set a precedence to the quality of cartoons and encouraged more production of colored films. The colored films created in the Disney studio made Disney overwhelmingly popular and advanced the common idea of black and white ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

At the time France was in conflict with England. This encounter was better known as The Hundred Years War. The Hundred Years War was a series of conflicts which took place from 1337 to 1453 by the House of Plantagenet, rulers of the Kingdom of England, against the House of Valois, rulers of the Kingdom of France, for control of the Kingdom of France. Both of Joan s parents were farmers, she was not taught to read or write, but her god loving mother instilled in her a deep love for the Catholic Church and its teachings which is what played a role in Joan being known as the heroine of France by playing a very significant role in the Hundred Years War. She received visions from St Michael and from God regarding the war in which she promised Charles, who was heir to the throne at the time, that she would give him his rightful seat on the throne. At the time there were false accusations that Charles was not supposed to be King, so Henry V was king over both England and France. In the 1970s, genocide became a little more complex. Biological warfare invaded the reproductive rights of Native American women, making their wombs as barren and infertile as reservation land. In fact, the federally funded Indian Health Service, the very agency that was supposed to protect and provide for Indians, was the perpetrator of these sterilizations. The American Indian Policy Review Commission s report on the health of Native Americans said it best when they stated, the federal responsibility to provide health services to Indians has its roots in the unique moral, historical, and treaty obligations of the federal government, no court has ever ruled on the precise nature of that legal basis nor defined the specific legal rights for Indians created by those obligations (DeFine 1997 p.4). Thus, the Indian Health Service has always worked in strange and ambiguous ways. By the time sterilization for both the poor and minorities became an official sanction in 1970, and reservation populations became main targets of this policy, the IHS was ready to initiate its campaign against Indian women. Policy turned into perpetration, and people turned into victims. • 20. What Is Pedagogical Content Knowledge pedagogical content knowledge is the transformation of subject matter, pedagogical, and contextual knowledge into a unique form, which is called the transformative model. The transformative model implies that these initial knowledge bases are inextricably combined into a new form of knowledge, pedagogical content knowledge, in which the parent domain may be discovered only through complicated analysis. The resulting amalgam is more interesting and powerful than its constituent parts (Gess Newsome, 1990). It is inevitable that the elderly face adverse effects of drugs while on medication especially when they still live independently. However, chances of errors in hospitals and care homes are more frequent when the medication process connects several departments (Belen et. al., 2009). They now go by names like financial consultant or investment specialist. Most financial advisors work for one of the major brokerage firms, banks, or insurance companies. • 24. Examples Of Id Ego And Superego In Lord Of The Flies Sigmund Freud created the structural model of personality that describes the id, ego, and superego parts of a person. Id is represented as the devil and based on the pleasure and benefiting themselves. Ego is the angel and devil together, where there is balance of good and bad. Lastly, superego is shown as the angel with good behavior and morals. In Golding s book Lord of the Flies, he uses Jack, Ralph, and Piggy to represent Sigmund Freuds theory of the three personalities: id, ego, and superego. Throughout the book, it can be noticed that Jack has the id personality. He wants to kill the pigs not for the benefit of the group, but for himself. Piggy is the voice of reason out of all the boys by telling them how things will affect them as a group, and that is just like how the superego tells the ego on how the action will influence society. Piggy always wants what is best for the group, and wants them all to get off the island safely. When the group decided to move the fire from the mountain, Golding describes, Piggy was so full of delight and expanding liberty in Jack s departure, so full of pride in his contribution to the good of society, that he helped to fetch wood (129). Piggy wants to guide the boys on the right path of survival, and enjoys when he is able to help. His involvement in book by helping Ralph and the other boys is based on the focus of the superego to help the needs of society. Golding s Lord of the Flies takes the structural model of personality and uses it to represent Jack, Ralph, and Piggy in the novel. He uses them to show how they interact with each other in society. He wants the readers to understand that the id makes decisions and actions that feels good for themselves, and not for others. There is a very simple explanation. Americans are not aware of the severity of the problems with being overweight. The government and media do not emphasize the importance of being healthy and in shape. Obesity has been defined as a culture bound phenomenon. • 33. The Code Of Silence Essays The Code of Silence Some argue that corrupt police officers are simply the product of a corrupt culture of the agency they work for. These officers are socially introduced to a number of informal rules when they begin employment. This process and these rules serve two main purposes. First, this process is designed to minimize the chances of external or internal controls being mobilized to address the behaviors and, secondly, to keep corrupt activities at a level that is acceptable and likely undetectable. The rule most often referred to in this connection, is the Code of Silence. Officers are socialized into not cooperating with investigations regarding fellow officers. Whether or not the officer participates in corrupt activities for financial gain, an officer s adherence to the Code of Silence places them squarely amongst the corrupt of the profession (Price, 1972). Some officers feel that discussing police transgressions regarding behavior or expressing worries about corruption makes them appear weak or soft . Some officers are uncertain whether certain gifts, such as flowers from a citizen saying thank you to an officer, are appropriate to accept (Westmarland, 2005). This uncertainty on the part of officers contributes to the Code of Silence that at times appears to be present in law enforcement. The Code of Silence is not simply something which applies only to the patrol officer or the officer that does not hold rank within the department. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Achievement should not only be thought of as the amount of intellectual ability a person possesses, but additionally as the ability to question, think critically, collaborate and synthesize information ( Primer: Education, 2014). A report by Michael Bennet... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Limited family income will make it more difficult for a student to have access to the same amount of educational supports at home that a student from a higher income family would have such as books, electronics, and tutoring, to name a few (Nokali, Bachman, Votruba Drzal, 2010). Illegal activities and gangs are more prevalent in lower income neighborhoods and can have negative influences on the amount of effort a student puts into their studies (Willingham, 2011). Less access to proper nutrition and healthcare can lead to increased absenteeism and reduced access to instruction (Kapinga, 2014). An increased level of mental health issues and distress can also be attributed to low SES (Baum, Garafalo, Yali, 1999). Any or all of the factors mentioned above can produce chronic stress which can negatively affect achievement (Kapinga, 2014). Students have also been shown to lack the motivation to pursue a post secondary education if there is no role model at home, such as a parent who has earned a college degree, to follow ( Identifying Factors, n.d.). In spite of the negative factors that a student might experience as a result of coming from a low SES, there are some positive attributes that have been shown to have a mitigating effect on student achievement. Johnson, 2006, reported that a high level of intelligence ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. Dear Mom And Dad,. I Completely Understand Why You Are Dear Mom and Dad, I completely understand why you are concerned about my use of marijuana not only for the well being of this family but also for my own health and future. I definitely understand your concerns, but you need to understand that you grew up in a completely different generation than me. Marijuana use is very common now days not only in The United States but all around the world. Many people who you interact with every day have at one point in their lives or even currently smoke marijuana, yet they are still able support their families, have a steady job, and even in my situation get a good education. One of the reasons you haven t realized this is because there are no long term effects and while on the drug most people are... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Now I understand that the two of you believe that marijuana is a gateway drug but I have done excessive research and I can assure you that it is in in no shape or form a gateway drug . The gateway theory argues that because heroin, cocaine and methamphetamine users often used marijuana before graduating to harder drugs, it must be a gateway to harder drug use. The theory implies that there is a causal mechanism that biologically sensitizes drug users, making them more willing to try and more desirous of harder drugs. Yet the gateway hypothesis doesn t make sense to those who use marijuana or have used in the past. Research shows that the vast majority of marijuana users do not go on to use hard drugs. Many users compare their daily cannabis habit with dependency on caffeine. The UK Department of Health say Cannabis is a weakly addictive drug but does induce dependence in a significant minority of heavy users. If you are a regular cannabis smoker (every day) and you stop smoking, you will experience some of the following withdrawal symptoms: restlessness, irritability, mild agitation, insomnia, nausea, sleep disturbance, sweats, and intense dreams. These symptoms, however, are mild and short lived, lasting 2 to 4 days. With such negligible withdrawal symptoms, it is not surprising that quitting marijuana is so easy, especially for someone with very strong will power, such as myself. ... • 44. Andrew Carnegie s Gospel Of Wealth In his article Wealth , Andrew Carnegie argues for the wealth to give back their wealth to the community by providing public institutions of various kinds ... [to] improve the general condition of the people (Foner 30). Carnegie uses this article to promote his Gospel of Wealth idea and provide his interpretation of the changing America. Carnegie s Gospel of Wealthstated that those who accumulated money had an obligation to use it to promote the advancement of society (Foner 28). Carnegie s articles focuses on the themes of Capitalism and Inequality, which continue to shape society. Carnegie was a wealthy man himself, but he practiced exactly what he preached. He notices how American society has revolutionized and created the divide between the rich and the poor as it changed. Carnegie compares the American past equality to the equality experienced among the Sioux Indians. Carnegie does not disapprove of the change, but recognizes it as highly beneficial (Foner 29). According to Carnegie, the evidence of the changing society is present in the contrast between the palace of the millionaire and the cottage of the laborer (Foner 29). Although Carnegie recognizes the divided between rich and poor, he does not see it as a bad thing, nor does he believe that people should stop obtaining wealth. Carnegie believes that the wealthy should use their money to provide for good instead of hoarding great sums all their lives (Foner 29). Carnegie approves of the implementation ... • 45. Auditory System Essay The world contains all kinds of energy that translates into information about what we see, hear, smell, touch and taste. A sensory system is a part of the nervous system responsible for processing specific sensory information. The components of a sensory system include sensory receptors, neural pathways, and parts of the brain involved in sensory perception. To begin, energy from the environment stimulates the receptor cells in whichever sense organ is being used. If this information were auditory, the ear would convert sound waves in the air into electrical impulses that would further be interpreted by the brain as sound. A sound wave first enters the pinna, the fleshy part of the ear on the outside of the body. It then travels through... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The movements of the membranes then send the vibrations down the scala tympani. A structure called the Organ of Corti, which is situated on the basilar membrane, becomes stimulated as the membrane vibrates and sends nerve impulses to the brain. Within the Organ of Corti are a group of specialized cells called hair cells, which are covered by the tectorial membrane. As the basilar membrane vibrates, the hair cells are bents and push up against the tectorial membrane. This causes the hair cells to fire and send nerve impulses to the auditory cortex on each of the brains hemispheres through the cochlear nerve. How we determine pitch can be explained with two different theories. The Place Theory states that the entire basilar membrane does not vibrate at once so different parts of the basilar membrane respond to different frequencies of sound. Lower frequency sounds vibrate the basilar membrane near the apex of the cochlea while higher frequency sounds produce vibrations closer to the base. The Frequency Theory states that the frequency of firing matches the frequency of the sound wave. Hearing loss can occur for a number of reasons. Damage to the eardrum due to age and prolonged exposure to loud noise may cause the hairs or nerve cells in the cochlea to wear out and become less effective. A buildup of earwax can block the ear canal and prevent of sound waves from entering the eardrum. Otosclerosis, a genetic form of hearing loss in which the stapes is fixed ... • 46. A Brief Review Of The Watsons Go To Birmingham-1963 By... One of the characters from the book The Watsons go to Birmingham 1963 by Christopher Paul Curtis, is Bumphead, who is Byron s best friend and fellow juvenile delinquent. One of his traits is bully, he bully many kids including his own brother. He bullies them either for their appearance or just for the fun of it. Bumphead bully Rufus for the way he dresses because Rufus doesn t have much clothes. An example of his bully is when Bumphead put butter on Byron s head, this caused Byron s dad to cut all his hair. This shows that Bumphead is a mean and bad young boy who likes to bully others. He doesn t care about what can be the result of his bully to other kids. • 47. The Morality Of White Man s Burden Just as the natives are overwhelmed by fear, the whites are also affected, but in a different manner than the black natives. The white people fear that the Natives will take back their land and get rid of the whites. The whites oppress the natives in order to curb that fear, controlling Crawford 6 them and making them bend to their will. In South Africa, the imperial whites have taken over everything in the country, in essence capturing the natives. The natives are suppressed with low paying and hard jobs, little to no education, and essentially no social structure. Without this education, the natives learn and obtain little to no skills. Without good paying jobs, they have no wealth or prosperity. Arthur Jarvis says, It is not permissible to watch its destruction, and to replace it by nothing, or by so little, that a whole people deteriorates, physically and morally (Paton 179). Jarvis is saying that because there is no tribal integrity, the natives have little to no meaning, as the tribal system is the only way of life they know. These things cause regression into chaos and dominance of whites over them. All things are done because the whites are afraid of the potential power of the colloquial mass of natives. In order to persuade themselves that white oppression is moral, white people use the logic behind White Man s Burden. Arthur Jarvis explains this in his writings that whites justify their motives because of philosophical or religious ideals. Jarvis ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 48. King William The Drinking Man s Diet King William I was a Norman during the Middle Ages. Normans were mostly known for fighting and feasting, so they were probably big and strong. King William was one of the largest men to rule a country. He was teased by many people for being so fat they even made remarks saying he was pregnant. He was getting too big to ride his hors; people could tell that the horse was suffering from him. According to Mickey Bumbar in his blog Lords of The Drinks, William was one of the first persons to go on a weight loss diet. Mickey wrote that in 1087 William started his diet which consisted of lying in bed and only drinking alcohol. Along then came Fletcherism during the 19th and 20th century. This diet or health plan was brought up by Horace Fletcher.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... What peoples beliefs are can also affect their diet, they may become vegetarian or vegan which can be very healthy if executed the right way. A lot of studies have been done that relate stress and weight gain, so stress can definitely influence the way a person eats. Not only can it be academically but also social kind of stress can contribute to unhealthy choices, for example, after a bad breakup people actually do tend to eat more sweets and just sit around. Information on what people can do different in their diets would be very helpful; having a better knowledge on healthier diets would help people recognize what they are doing wrong and how to fix it. Many times people turn to fad diets because the fastest way and easiest place to get information from, now a days, is going on the internet and that s were so many fad diets are being advertised.
