Character Development In John Steinbeck s Of Mice And Men
In John Steinbeck s book, Of Mice and Men, the theme shown is that everyone should have someone
to get through life with, no matter who they are through the use of character development, conflict,
and symbolism. Firstly, the author shows this through the use of character development in Curley s
wife, and how even though she acts powerful, she also wants someone to love. Although she has
Curley, Curley s wife shows that she just wants someone that will listen to her and care about her
when she says to Lennie, Ain t I got a right to talk to nobody? (Steinbeck, 1945, pg. 87). Curley s wife
is so desperate to have someone to just talk to that she is constantly hanging around the boys even
though they don t like her being there. Additionally,

Tutorial 1 Introduction to Legal Environment of Business 1a) This is a civil matter as it is a private
dispute between S and T which is not harmful to society. The dispute should be resolved through
mediation. This is because it is cheaper, faster, more informal, and also private. Most importantly, it
creates a win win situation which will allow S and T to preserve their business relationship and
compromise to settle the dispute amicably. b) This is a criminal and civil matter. It is criminal as theft
is against public interest and safety and illegal under Section 379 of the Penal Code. At the same time,
it is also a civil matter as breaking into the store and stealing jewellery is a private wrong against the
owner of the store. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The business will first have to file for litigation before the option for mediation at PDRC ill become
available. Since litigation is very expensive and requires lawyers, lawyer fees and takes a longer time,
SMC ill be faster and cheaper overall. Moreover, the mediator appointed at SMC is not a judge but
rather, a professional with technical expertise and field experience in the matter being disputed. This
ensures a more practical judgement as compared to at PDRC, where the mediator is a judge of the
Subordinate Courts. 4) A business which has not chosen to go for SMC will go for mediation services
offered by the court at PDRC as many people may be unfamiliar/unaware about mediation at SMC
being an option and thus filed for litigation directly. After being made aware of the option of
mediation, many would go for PDRC as it wastes less time, since litigation usually involves long
waiting periods after applying for litigation to go to trial. Thus, most would just try mediation first and
only proceed with litigation if mediation at PDRC fails, especially since it is free. Given that litigation
has started, both parties are also more likely to compromise than before. 5) Yes, you can go for
arbitration even if both the businesses are local. 6) The business can negotiate with the lawyer, or
choose instead to have the bill taxed in court ie have the bill examined by the court to see if it has
indeed been overcharged. Alternatively, it may

Expectancy Violations Theory Of Expectancy
Expectancy Violations Theory
Every day we make predictions. Its subconscious, but we do. Imagine meeting someone for the first
time and you predicted shaking the person s hand. In fact, you may have even extended your hand out,
if the person you were meeting took the hand and pulled it into a hug, you have just experienced a
violation of what you expected to happen. This is called expectancy violations theory. The expectancy
violations theory was developed by Judee Burgoon. The theory is an in depth look into how people
respond to an offense to what they perceive as a social norm. Individuals make predictions based on
their past interactions and have compiled their own expectations.
Expectancy violations include personal space. Personal space is the distance that a person prefers to be
from others. Personal space is subjective to every individual s preference and can be influenced by
their cultural background. Edward Hall who coined the term, proxemics, said Americans have four
proxemics zones. The first being the intimate distance about zero to eighteen inches, the next was
called personal distance which was eighteen inches to four feet, then third proxemics zone was named
social distance which was from four feet to 12 feet, and finally the last zone was public distance which
was twelve feet to 15 feet. Hall taught that we shouldn t be incentive to other special cultures and that
it was important to adjust our non verbal behavior to accommodate others (Griffin et al.,

The Fall Of Rome And The Western Empire
The fall of the city of Rome and the Western Empire did not put an end to the entire Roman
Empire. The Roman Empire is the term used to refer the period in Ancient Roman history and
civilisation when in Rome and its territories were ruled by autocratic Emperors. He decided to divide
the Roman Empire in two to make it easier to rule he created the Western Empire and the Eastern
Empire, each with its own leader. After the Romans freed themselves from the Etruscans, they
established a republic, and all males who were descended from the original tribes of Rome became
citizens. It was a time when the distinction between provincials and Romans diminished as a greater
number of emperors, senators, citizens, and soldiers came from provincial backgrounds

Competition And Sustainability For Reducing Production Costs
Competition and sustainability in the third party IT contracting industry in the United States are driven
by economic factors such as outsourcing, globalization, mergers, and acquisitions (Rose Anderssen,
Baldwin, Ridgway, 2011). In turn, these factors shape and transform third party IT contracting
companies (Jancikova Brychta, 2009). IT outsourcing (ITO) is a business solution for reducing
production costs (Desar McGee, 2010). This approach is used frequently in the operation of call
centers to provide customer service. For example, in Germany, a labor regulatory framework is used
to reduce labor costs in the operation of registered companies (Weinkopf, 2009). Work is outsourced
to less developed countries with less costly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Representatives of most IT companies, particularly call centers, use cloud computing software to
allow connectivity and sharing of resources in company data centers (Beverakis, Dick, Cecez
Kecmanovic, 2009). Cloud computing software is an advanced tool used in outsourcing, particularly
for communications, because of the capacity to collect and access massive amounts of data. This
software is commonly operated in a data center, which allows access to associated data in a variety of
ways (Anthes, 2010). Because most call centers operate using cloud computing, third party IT
contracting security is a primary concern (Anthes, 2010; Gatewood, 2009).
During the 1980s and 90s, outsourcing organizational activities became the standard for many
organizations (Kahai et al., 2011). Outsourcing, as a part of an organization s overall strategic plan,
has been effective in helping achieve organizational goals and objectives (Kahai et al., 2011).
Currently, many organizations incorporate outsourcing into the strategic plan, and this trend will
probably increase in the future (Heikkila Heikkila, 2010). Although outsourcing will not solve all of
the problems inherent in attempting to achieve competitive advantages and organizational cost
reductions in an organization, the practice is increasingly part of an organization s overall
comprehensive strategy in the business world (Andreff, 2009). While

Physics Of String Theory Of Physics
What is string theory?
String theory is a theory that states that the universe is made up of vibrating strings. It is the best
candidate for a quantum theory of gravity. String theory attempts to be a theory of everything.
there are two types of string theories. the first time has strings that are in loops that can break into
open strings and the other has loops that cannot break into open strings. the elementary strings have a
number of excitation modes that are the elementary particles observed. the strings have tension of 1/(2
p a ) strings are approximately the planck length (smallest possible size of black hole) 10^( 33) cm

However there were also slight errors in the Veneziano s model, it was found to be the first term in an
infinite series. In the end, the theory lost in describing hadrons to the standard model of particle
physics.
The standard model of particle physics and why it is not the complete picture
According to the standard model there are matter particles and there are force carrier particles. The
matter particles are the 6 quarks and 6 leptons. The quarks come in three generations. The first
generation is the up quark and the down quark. The second generation is the charm quark and the
strange quark. The third generation is the top quark and the bottom quark. The quarks also have a
property that is called colour. They can be red, blue, green, antired, antiblue or antigreen. The property
colour, does not refer to actual colour. Colour is meaningless on that scale. The quarks combine to
form white.
The six leptons are the electron, the electron neutrino. the muon, the muon neutrino, the tau and the
tau neutrino. The neutrinos have very small mass and are neutral in electric charge, while the other
leptons have a larger mass and have electric charge.
There are also the force carrier particles. There are four forces, the electromagnetic force, the weak
force, the strong force and gravity. For each force there is a boson. The

Sentences By Bonaventure
When one believes in God he naturally revealed to them through the goodness in his creation. By
looking at the surrounding world one can see God s fingerprints. In his work, Sentences, Bonaventure
modestly defines creation as as the loving outflow of a loving God whose infinite dynamic goodness
is shared in a limited dynamic way. Creation is God s other. God doesn t have to create since God is
infinitely bountiful and self communicative within Himself. Creation flows out of the infinite fountain
of divine self diffusive goodness because God is creative and loving. The Father freely desires to
create because God is love, and perfect love can never be self contained it must be shared.
Bonaventure indicates that the world exists by virtue of the free creative power of divine love.
Creation is a free act of divine goodness spilling forth from the infinite divine community of love.
Bonaventure uses the term emanation to describe the expression of creation from the loving
community of a triune God. Emanation used in the Christian sense means that creation flows out of
the infinite, transcendent one. Bonaventure metaphorically writes, Creation is like a river, which flows
from a spring, spreads throughout the land to purify and fructify it, and eventually flows back to its
point of origin. This image speaks to the intimate connection between creation and the triune God as
well as creation s cyclical nature. Bonaventure writes that creation can find its origin in a single

Introduction and Climate
The state of Hawaii is composed of 132 islands, reefs and shoals that extend for over 1500 miles
across the central North Pacific Ocean from the quot;Big Island quot; of Hawaii to midway and Kure
Atolls. The eight main islands of Hawaiian Archipelago include Hawaii, Maui, Oahu, Kauai, Molokai,
Lanai, Nihau and Kahoolawe (listed in order of size) which extend for only 350 miles at the south
eastern end of the volcanic mountain chain. Hawaii includes some of the earth s largest mountains,
rising from oceanic depths of greater than 18,000 feet to a height above sea level of nearly 14,000 feet.
Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa on the Big Island are volcanic mountains with a total relief of 32,000 feet.

The West side of the Island has near desert like conditions, while the summit of Waialeale is the
wettest spot in the world, with an average rainfall of almost 500 inches per year. Normally, the rugged,
mountainous interior has much more rainfall than the coastal areas where most communities are
located. The Maritime Tropical air mass highly influences Kalalau Valley, Kauai. With its warm and
humid weather that it brings in we see how the Island of Kauai goes from stable to conditionally
unstable. The convectional lifting of the air masses around the Island of Kauai shows how an air mass
passes a maritime source and it causes lifting in the air mass. If the conditions of the Island are
unstable then the lifting is sustained and clouds develop. This is why the temperatures and the rainfall
vary with certain spots. For example, Average rainfall ranges from 35 inches at poipu Beach to 444
inches at the summit of Waialeale. The general circulation that influences Kalalau Valley is the
Northeast trade winds. The subtropical high and the southeast trade winds affect the valley as well.
Mainly the northeast trade winds and the southeast trade winds influence the state of the Hawaiian
Islands. The Island of Kauai and Kalalaua Valley are located in the Tropical Rainforest region. The
pattern of precipitation and temperature for Kauai between January 1st and December 31st, was
between 45 and 70 for temperature in Fahrenheit. The minimum temperature is about 50

Does the Canadian Charter Effectively Protect our Human...
Apart from the other laws in Canada s constitution, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms is
an important law that affects every Canadian s rights and freedoms. It was created in 1981 by former
Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau to provide legal protection for the most important rights and freedoms.
These rights include fundamental freedoms, democratic rights, mobility rights, and legal rights. Most
but not all articles included in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights are protected in the
constitution. However, if a Canadian feels that their rights are violated, they can challenge laws and
unfair actions using the justice system. In my opinion, I believe the Canadian Charter of Human
Rights somewhat protects Canadians rights and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To prove that the Charter protects some rights but not all, a court case that involved Dr Henry
Morgentaler and the Supreme Court of Canada was successful after trials. Before this case, women
were only allowed to have an abortion after proper certification of approval from a hospital s
Therapeutic Abortion Committee. Three doctors including Morgentaler set up an abortion clinic that
allowed women to have an abortion without a certification of approval. He was later charged with
illegal abortion under section 251 of the Criminal Code. Morgentaler argued that women had full right
on deciding whether or not they wanted an abortion. This law was struck down as unconstitutional as
it violated a woman s right according to section 7 on the Charter.
Another example to support my statement involves the case R. V. Big M Drug Mart. Before this case,
the Lord s Day Act prevented people from opening shops on Sundays because that day was for
Christian people to go to church and spend time with their family. Big M Drug Mart was charged in
Calgary for unlawfully opening their store on a Sunday. They disagreed to the Lord s Day Act because
not every Canadian citizen had to have a religion. This case was later released and the law was struck
down due to violation in section 2 in the Canadian Charter, which protected fundamental rights.
In contrast, a case study involving Omar Khadr, the United

What Made Up Theater During The Middle Ages
There is that smaller world which is the stage, and that larger stage which is the world, Isacc
Goldberg. These are important words, because theater is valued in our world today, and was especially
important during the Middle Ages. The church was the main source of order and security during this
time. Going to heaven was the only thing the people really lived for because they had nothing else.
Theater was one of the few things the people of this time could find entertainment in. Theater helped
the people escape from the unexciting and rough world they lived in, and allowed them to be placed in
an exciting new world. There were many different types of plays during the Middle Ages: traveling
performers, liturgical dramas, vernacular plays, cycle plays, and morality plays. All of these made up
theater during the Middle Ages, and helped it to grow and change into what it is today. The Middle
Ages, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These plays took place in Middle Ages between 1200 1350. Miracle plays were one type of vernacular
drama. They had the same concept of liturgical plays, but were more focused on the saints. Mystery
plays were also a type of vernacular drama, and were very close to liturgical plays. These plays were
usually acted by churchmen ( Vernacular ). As the church s control over the plays decreased, cycle
plays came in. Cycle productions were made up of several short plays. Unlike liturgical drama, these
plays did not have to be religious. Depending on the type, cycle productions could be relatively short,
or they could take days to finish. Three hundred actors were not unusual for these plays (Robinson).
Just like with other parts of society during the Middle Ages, women were not in theater. All of these
plays were impacted or controlled by the church. The plays were always reviewed by the church, and
they could disapprove a production. The churches impact on theater declined the most in the 14th

Comparing Epic Of Gilgamesh And Noah And The Flood
A flood is an overflowing of a large amount of water beyond its normal confines. Characters including
the hero, the hero s family, gods, and animals plays a part in these stories. When observing the plots
there seems to be similarities and differences. There are also many important symbols to look out for.
In the narratives The Epic of Gilgamesh and Noah and the Flood both describe floods. Important
characters are mentioned. The main heroes are Utnapishtim and Noah where they both are worthy for
their god or gods. There are many gods involved with Utnapishtim whereas with Noah there is only
one. That city grew old and the gods that were in it were old (Epic of Gilgamesh 145). Animals seem
to have a major role for living.
Of every clean animal you shall take seven pairs, males and their mates, and every animal which is not
clean, two, a male and its mate; of the birds of the sky also, seven pairs, male and female, to keep seed
alive upon all the earth. (Noah and the Flood 172)

which they smelled. When the gods smelled the sweet savor, they gathered like flies over the sacrifice

La Sylphie And Giselle Research Paper
La Sylphide and Giselle, romantic ballets written in the Romantic era of the 19th century,
revolutionized ballet by introducing the spirituality of Romantic poetry and literature to the world of
dance. These ballets were brought to life through the tip of Marie Talioni s toes, an Italian French
ballerina who is known for her graceful, almost evanescent dancing. La Sylphide and Giselle played
an important role in creating a fundamental change in ballet through its portrayal of supernaturalism.
Isaiah Berlin, a philosopher widely considered to be the dominant British scholar in the 20th century,
said Romanticism personified:

It brought a new poetry to the dance and created a greater illusion as if they were floating across the
stage like mystical creatures. Pointe work was compulsory for the interpretation of a wili and sylph as
it was seen to be the most transcendent example in these acts of romantic mystery (Guest, The
Romantic Ballet in Paris, 18). Marie Taglioni as the role of Giselle, was able to achieve grace and
spiritually of movement. Her attention was given to the minutest details. This marked her as one of the
greatest leading Giselle s of her time. She seemed to float and bound like a sylph across the stage,
never executing those tours de force that we know to be difficult and wish were impossible, being
always performed at the expense of decorum and grace (Guest, The Romantic Ballet in Paris, 104).
During this era, tricks and so called tours de force were not something that was prominent or
important to the appeal of the choreographers. The true distinction during the Romantic period was the
story line about love, madness, good vs. evil, and the supernatural. The Romantic Era shifts away
from the early 18th century style and move away from the rational. This is an era of elusive dreams
and life beyond death; an area that cultivates audience to feel and not to

Canadian troops were tasked to capture the important Vimy Ridge. The Canadian Army bombarded

This artillery bombardment had helped Canada develop a successful way to defeat Germany. As a

The focus of the painting is based on the two soldiers passing the shell to each other and then into to
the artillery to shoot against the German army. The gesture of working together in harsh realities
carries the message of unity and self sacrifice for the war. One soldier does not have his uniform on
meaning no protective gear that characterizes unselfishness in the center of a great battle.
Furthermore, there is a soldier, who has an injury on his hand, yet still continuing to fight. The wound
shows contribution in the face of danger and heroism marked by the bandaged arm on his return to the
conflict. It sets an example of selflessness and bravery and the artist shows that in war, sacrifice can be
represented by their schedule of duty.

Analysis of WalMart s Approach To Employee Management...
In the past it was noted by Snell, Youngy and Wright (1996:62) that organisations would purposely
take human resource out of the strategic equation . Today it is widely accepted that linking HR to
strategy because of a shift in ideas concerning competition and firm advantage (Snell, Shauder and
Wright (2001:3)). This shift was identified by Quin (1992:241) with rare exceptions, the economic and
producing power of the firm lies more in its intellectual and service capabilities than in its hard assets
Wal Mart are aware of this and so by examining Wal Marts practices using the best fit perceptive will

They also ensure employees only work enough hours to count as part time employees so Wal Mart
does not have to contribute towards health care costs.
Wal Mart s stance on not allowing unions can also be accredited to their cost leadership approach.
When I outline Wal Mart s business policy at the start of this essay, I suggest that they were a central
control based organisation that tried to ensure it controlled all aspects of the firm. This is linked to cost
leadership, by having tight control they know exactly where money is going and where it is coming
from which allows for better development of efficiency.
This notion of control is especially noticeable on their management of employees, for example
through such action as cutting hours, understaffing, minimum wage levels and stopping overtime. If
they were to allow a Union to be formed then employees would be able to group together to try and
abolishes they tools. For example workers in Unions at other supermarkets earn approxiamtly 30%
more then non union workers as Wal Mart,(Bureau of labour Statistics (2004) and 72% of union
workers have guaranteed pension schemes whereas only 15% of non union employees (such as those
at Wal Mart) have the same sort of deal. Wal Mart can use these tools to control their staff because of
the poor labour laws in America (Miller (2004)).
This external fit notion has been criticised because

The Journey From Darkness To Light In Mccarthy s The Road
McCarthy s novel and Hillcoat s film adaptation of The Road portray a father and son s arduous
journey for survival, through key scenes, themes and flashbacks.
The father and son in The Road go from darkness to light in their journey from a desolate unspecified
location to a better and more inviting place and future. From the very beginning McCarthy creates a
strong image by repeating nothing and ash , words that suggest darkness, introducing to the reader a
world where people and places names are nameless and the darkness is a state of being. The motif of
light appears at the end of the novel, suggesting a possible shade of faith. The author describes this in
the scene of the boy watching over his dying father a fading light, the light of a candle . However,
Hillcoat s film adaptation does not capture the vast, crushed emptiness of the world envisioned by
McCarthy. The film contains hope, demonstrated by the brighter lighting and continuous flashbacks
portraying bright colours of nature. The film adaption also features live animals such as birds which
symbolise hope. In the novel, McCarthy shows hope by describing fish swimming in the stream,
whereas Hillcoat portrayed hope by showing a live beetle fly from an open can. Though they both
show signs of hope and life, one was presented while the father was still alive and the other after his
death.
The man demonstrates consistently that he is prepared to take whatever action necessary, even if
violent, to ensure his

Background Information The author would say that the background to the creation story is one of the
easier ones to grasp. Simply because: that is when the world began. I would hope that, as a Christian
in a Christian school, this is not a mind blowing conclusion. According to Alex Varughese (2006), The

Christians were set apart until the sin of Adam and Eve. After the sin, Christians no longer had the
easy way out. Christians have to work hard, not only on work, but also in their presentation of
Christianity. The second connection to the sin of Adam and Eve would be the list that is given in
Romans of all the sin that the people of Rome are committing. It is no coincidence that worse and
worse consequences to sin have come about since the fall of man. There is no one who understands;
there is no one who seeks God. All have turned away they have together become worthless; there is
not one who does good, not even one. Their throats are open graves; their tongues practice deceit, the
poison of vipers is on their lips. Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness. Their feet are swift to
shed blood; ruin and misery mark their ways, and the way of peace they do not know. There is not fear
of God before their eyes (Romans 3:11 18, New International Version). The most prominent
correlation between Genesis and Romans would be that sin is worse than it was at the fall of man and
just as Adam and Eve sinned; man is still sinning. No longer is their simply disobedience; now there is
a list of the sins that man is committing and willingly displaying for anyone to see. Adam and Eve
were trying to hide their sins, the people of Rome are sinning for full

the possession of the product, or giving a sense of belonging to a group or community. Since the
recent military activity in Iraq and Afghanistan, another ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The whole patriotic theme is strange because the connection between patriotism and the product does
not make the product function better, so why do we feel obligated to pay attention to the advertisement
and even purchase that product.
Along with patriotism another concept used widely is the elitism the product brings to people with its
possession. As Jack Solomon wrote in his essay Masters of Desire, We Americans dream of rising
about the crowd, of attaining a social summit beyond the reach of ordinary citizens (1). He is basically
saying that Americans want to be better then the people around them and this belief is what marketers
feast on, creating status symbols like Rolex, Mercedes, BMW, etc. One advertisement that crosses my
mind in terms of using elitism would be the new U2 iPod Special Edition advertisement. This
promotes an iPod with a black cover and laser engraved signatures of the U2 band members;
everything else is similar to a regular iPod; whereas, the price is $50 more. People are led into
believing that the U2 iPod is better than the regular one only because it is endorsed by U2. Another
ironic detail is that a normal iPod itself is a product of elitism, because even though it has similar
functions to a Sony or any other MP3 player, it costs $100 more only because it comes with the
signature white headphones. These headphones, unique only because an iPod come equipped with
them, have made themselves and the iPod a status symbol. Most

Contribution Of Confucius
Confucius was born in 551 BC and died in 479 BC at age seventy two. He was a great influence on
chinese teachings. He was widely known as Master for the great influence he brought upon central
China. The translation of his name literally means Master Kong. He was the author and editor of
several chinese texts. After his death, these texts and teachings were created into the Analects. The
Analects reflect and provide discussions of Confucius and his disciples. Through the reading of the
thirteenth and fourteenth chapters from the Analects, one can conclude that Confucius taught
governmental morality, the behavior of a ruler, how rulers should maintain order, and mistakes of
rulers.
Confucius taught that government should be strict and precise. In government, princes were to appoint
the minister by following the rules of propriety. Ministers were to follow the orders of the prince with
adherence. The ruler should appoint office positions to whom they know. In government, the ruler
must rectify himself and others. Confucius thought that the first thing to be done in a government was
to rectify names to ensure social harmony. The rectifying of names was crucial because they needed to
be correct so that the language of things was the truth. The language of things needed to be truthful to
ensure success of things. Without the success of things, music and proprieties would not prosper.
When these things do not thrive, order is not restored and the people would not be aware of how

Tower Of Babel Research Paper
Many things have changed over the years. Even in just a decade or so, things have changed drastically.
Technology, for example, just keeps getting more advanced as we go on. It seems that every week
there are new types of technology, new ways to communicate, new ways to make something easier by
using technology. There are great ideas coming from every country in the world. It helps that everyone
is spread out into the different continents and countries. Being spread out helps because everyone
thinks separately and contributes to new findings for the world. Without the Tower of Babel, not
everyone would be spread out like they are now, and we would all be thinking together, like one,
instead of all thinking up new ideas separately. We wouldn t ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Some people think that all languages evolved from one main language. They think all that the original
language changed a lot and changed differently depending on where you lived and who you were
with. In different countries, this main language changed in their own ways and eventually became a
new language. Languages are linked together by shared words, sounds, and grammatical construction.
So how could all languages have come from one original language if the words, sounds and
grammatical construction in many languages are nowhere near similar to that of other languages?
They couldn t have. Quoting from notes from my class Book of Genesis, There is no mathematical
possibility that these variations could have evolved by chance and no linguistic possibility that they all

Little Rock Central High School Research Paper
The road to the historic desegregation of Little Rock Central High school began in the 1930 s when
the NAACP tasked future Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall with fighting segregation in
schools. By 1950 he had helped to strike down segregation in universities in several states. In 1951,
the NAACP aided parents of black children attending public schools in Topeka, Kansas in attempting
to overturn the state s segregation laws. After a three year court battle, the 1954 Supreme Court case
Brown v. Board of Education Topeka culminated in the abolishment of school segregation laws in 21

Faubus ordered the Arkansas National Guard to prevent the students from entering Central High. The
students attempted to stay on track with their education via correspondence courses and help from

President Eisenhower met with the governor and convinced him to rescind the National Guard. The
nine students once again tried to enter the school on September 23rd with a police escort but were met
with a mob of over 1,000 angry whites calling for their deaths. After making their way into a side

mob overpowered the police and the nine black students were rushed out of the building in two large
cars as TV cameras showed the American people the chaos unfolding in Little Rock. The next day,
President Eisenhower federalized the Arkansas National Guard and ordered over 1000 men from the
US Army s 101st Airborne division to protect the students. On September 25, the students returned to

Essay about The Psychology of Robert Frost’s Nature Poetry
The Psychology of Robert Frost s Nature Poetry
Robert Frost s nature poetry occupies a significant place in the poetic arts; however, it is likely Frost s
use of nature is the most misunderstood aspect of his poetry. While nature is always present in Frost s
writing, it is primarily used in a pastoral sense (Lynen 1). This makes sense as Frost did consider
himself to be a shepherd.
Frost uses nature as an image that he wants us to see or a metaphor that he wants us to relate to on a
psychological level. To say that Frost is a nature poet is inaccurate.
His poetry is in the main psychologically oriented with emphasis on specific recurring themes, which
include, but are not limited to, loneliness, retreat, spirituality, darkness, ... Show more content on

The contrast between the humans and nature enables Frost to deal with and illustrate significant issues
affecting humans.
A very interesting point regarding Frost s relationship with nature is that he views it with ambiguity.
Most assume that Frost is a nature lover; however, while this is true in part, Frost also views nature as
having the capability of being destructive. Lynen speaks of this duality by saying, You cannot have
one without the other: love of natural beauty and horror at the remoteness and indifference of the
physical world are not opposites but different aspects of the same view (7). On speaking of Frost s
dualistic view of nature, Phillip L. Gerber states, For nature is hard as she is soft, she can destroy and
thwart, disappoint, frustrate, and batter (132). Robert Frost views nature as an alien force capable of
destroying man , but on the flip side, he also views man s struggle with nature as a heroic battle
(quoted in Thompson).
In his poem Our Hold on the Planet Frost illustrates this point by saying,
There is much in nature against us. But we forget:
Take nature altogether since time began Including human nature, in peace and war, And it must be a
little more in favor of man, Say a fraction of one percent at the very least,
Or our number living wouldn t be steadily more, Our hold on the planet wouldn t have so increased.
(Frost 317).

Machine Stops
The True Value of Time and how it Affects humanity Time is precious, the one thing no one can
control. In the story, Machine Stops, written by E. M. Forster, life today has changed drastically from
what was known yesterday and much of life lived in the past has been forgotten. A life lived today
revolves around the Machine that takes care of simple tasks by the click of a button, for anything else
would be a waste of time. The meaning of age, the importance of ideas, the emotions that follow have
all been pushed aside, once everything s been taken care of by the Machine. People who live on the

Mongol Battle Tactics
The Mongols were a ruthless group of nomads who spent their time spreading fear into the people of
Asia and Europe during the post classical age, around 1200 1400 C.E. The conquered the largest land
empire of all time prior to themselves and possessed one the most devastating armies ever to set foot
on the Earth. They spent their time under their most well known leader, Genghis Khan, attacking and
expanding their massive empire that many are familiar with today. The Mongols, throughout their
relatively short two hundred years in power, built an astronomically large empire, in this short amount
of time due to their intellect, strategy, and technology as well as the brute force of their army. To start,

purpose of this article was to explain to other Mongols, as passed through oral tradition, of their battle
tactics, to either be used again, or even to encourage the people of the empire that they were the

Childbirth what do we really know about childbirth and childbirth losses. There have been many
books written about childbirth losses but those books barely cover the topics, or they tend to sequester
the information. Although, there has been frequency, pregnancy and childbirth losses are not widely
recognized or understood still in our culture. Most of our health care providers are reluctant to inform
women of the possibility of loss. Some medical professional would state that this is understandably in
today s culture and society; so our health care providers are reluctant to discuss medical options until a
problem occurs. Our healthcare professional such as doctors, nurses, administrators, etc. are the once
who we trust. We trust them with our personal information and our health care. To hear that some if
not most may be holding back important information that could affect our health and decision making
is a questionable practice.

Planned Parenthood By Margaret Sanger
The first birth control clinic in the United States opened on October 16, 1916 by Margaret Sanger. Her
nonprofit organization is now known as Planned Parenthood. Sanger was not only an advocate for
women s reproductive rights, but also a vocal eugenic enthusiast. Her motives behind starting the
organization were to educate women about the reproductive process allowing them to choose when
and whether to bear children. Although Sanger supported the eugenics movement and sterilization, we
cannot forget about all of the men and women her organization helped and continues to help to this
day.
Growing up Sanger s father was an unstable man who was incapable of providing adequately for his
large family. Although a skilled craftsman, he was unable to properly care for his family because he
preferred drinking over earning a steady wage, while his 11 children suffered bitterly from privation.
Once Sanger grew older she fled her unhappy home in search for a better life. She attended college
and found it was not for her and later met her husband who she had 3 children with. Sanger detested
domestic life and neglected her children to the point that neighbors had to step in and care for them (
Margaret Sanger ). It is safe to say Sanger did not have it easy growing up. Living such a rough
childhood can be partial to blame for her eugenic views.
Sanger s upbringing may be the underlying cause for her support in the eugenic movement. She may
have felt her inability to care for her own

figuratively. When such systems of oppressors and the oppressed arise, members of society begin to
question such ideologies. In the Heart of Darkness, Marlow explores the brutality that lies within the
endless inescapable power that is associated with imperialism. He sees past the materialistic aspects of
wealth and interprets the actual reality. This is especially clear when Marlow expresses that They were
dying slowly it was very clear. They were not enemies, they were not criminals, and they were nothing
earthly now nothing but black shadows of disease and starvation, lying confusedly in the greenish
gloom. (Conrad 31). Marlow recognizes that the slaves casted in chains were not of any threat nor

Furthermore, his experience in the Congo made him feel that the entire journey was like a weary
pilgrimage amongst hints of nightmares (Conrad 79). Pilgrimage may sound light filled and blessed
with great intentions. However, the goal itself is not so righteous. It is more of an act of robbery,
violence, greed, and power than nobility. Whereas, In Brave New World, John the savage is a white
male who is set aside from both Civilization and the savage reservations. He was born from an actual
womb, which is prohibited by the state, but is also not physically similar to the those in the savage

John feels a sense of disconnection which later drives him into utter madness. For instance, When
Helmholtz and Bernard find John in the bathroom throwing up, they hear John utter that he ate

that the new world offers. Although he despised the savage reservations, he misses the ability to act

Analysis Of An Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge
An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge
An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge by Ambrose Bierce, is an eerie short story about a man who
believes he has escaped from death but in reality, he was dreaming the whole time and is killed by the
Union soldiers. I found it interesting that Farquhar truly believed that he escaped his death. Narration
is a huge component with this story. Without the literary devices used, the story would not flow and
the readers would not understand why the story is told the way it is. Themes that stand out within the
text are the war, perception and death. This story reflects on how a person who is in danger creates a
distorted perception of a serious or death threatening event.
The short story starts off with a man ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Bierce breaks up the story by firstly explaining what is happening at that moment, it then moves to a
description of Farquhar, and lastly the story moves to Farquhar s distorted perception of his reality and
his death. The story is well descripted which helps the reader understand what is going on, the
descriptions also allow the reader to know what is going on around Farquhar and what he is seeing.
The story is written in third person narrative, which is an omniscient narrator. As a reader, the narrator
gave lots of information but left a big chunk of information out. Throughout the whole story, we get
all our information from the narrator. The only thing the narrator did not inform us about is that half
the of the story was not real. I believe this was done to show the readers that your perception is not
always true. Bierce also used foreshadowing in the beginning of the story. In the first half of the story
Farquhar mentioned a plan to escape If I could free my hands, I might throw the noose and spring into
the stream. By diving I could evade the bullets and, swimming vigorously, reach the bank, take to the
woods and get away home. , he knew it wasn t possible to get out of his situation but was optimistic.
In his distorted perception, Farquhar

According to Revesc in The Independent newspaper dated 25th June 2017, President Donald Trump
did not hold the Iftar dinner to mark the end of Ramadan. This was contrary to the Muslim tradition
held in White House dating more than two decades. The Iftar dinner is held at sunset at the end of the
Islamic holy month of Ramadan characterized by reflection and fasting among the Muslims. Just as
reported by Moore in the New York Post, Revesc also reports on the statement of Eid Mubarak issued
by President Trump to the Muslim community. In the statement, the President noted that Muslims in
the United States joined others globally in Ramadan and urged the faithful to continue their tradition
of helping neighbors and sharing. He added that the Eid al Fitr holiday reminds Americans to be
merciful, compassionate and have goodwill with Muslims around the world. He reiterated the U.S
commitment to honor the values of Eid al Fitr.
Revesc notes that officials in the White House spent months planning for the Iftar event only for it to
fail to take place in 2017. Nevertheless, the US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson was alleged to have
said that the Government would not hold the dinner. In the reigns of Presidents Clinton, Bush and
Obama, the traditional White House event had been held in every year. Revesc gives a

Operation of NFC:
NFC gadgets are novel in that they bolster three methods of operation: reader/writer, Peer to peer, and
card emulation. The diverse working modes are in light of the ISO/IEC 18092 NFC IP 1 and ISO/IEC
14443 contactless savvy card models.
In reader/writer mode, the NFC gadget is equipped for perusing NFC Forum commanded label sorts,
for example, a tag installed in a NFC brilliant publication. The reader/writer mode on the RF interface
is agreeable with the ISO 14443 and FeliCa plans.
In Peer to Peer mode, two NFC gadgets can trade information. For instance, you can share Bluetooth
or Wi Fi connection set up parameters or you can trade information, for example, virtual business
cards or advanced photographs. Distributed mode is institutionalised on the ISO/IEC 18092 standard.
In Card Emulation mode, the NFC gadget seems to an outside user much the same as a customary
contactless brilliant card. This empowers contactless instalments and ticketing by NFC gadgets
without changing the current framework.
NFC works in two modes
Active Mode: In this mode, both gadgets are creating their own RF fields. This would be for the
situation that two cell phones are being utilised to trade information.
Passive Mode: In this mode, one of the gadgets creates the RF field and the other gadget utilises the
field to power itself and convey. The active gadget is generally the Reader and the inactive gadget is
the tag .

  • 2. Character Development In John Steinbeck s Of Mice And Men In John Steinbeck s book, Of Mice and Men, the theme shown is that everyone should have someone to get through life with, no matter who they are through the use of character development, conflict, and symbolism. Firstly, the author shows this through the use of character development in Curley s wife, and how even though she acts powerful, she also wants someone to love. Although she has Curley, Curley s wife shows that she just wants someone that will listen to her and care about her when she says to Lennie, Ain t I got a right to talk to nobody? (Steinbeck, 1945, pg. 87). Curley s wife is so desperate to have someone to just talk to that she is constantly hanging around the boys even though they don t like her being there. Additionally, ... • 3. BSP1004 Tutorial Answer Essay example Tutorial 1 Introduction to Legal Environment of Business 1a) This is a civil matter as it is a private dispute between S and T which is not harmful to society. The dispute should be resolved through mediation. This is because it is cheaper, faster, more informal, and also private. Most importantly, it creates a win win situation which will allow S and T to preserve their business relationship and compromise to settle the dispute amicably. b) This is a criminal and civil matter. It is criminal as theft is against public interest and safety and illegal under Section 379 of the Penal Code. At the same time, it is also a civil matter as breaking into the store and stealing jewellery is a private wrong against the owner of the store. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The business will first have to file for litigation before the option for mediation at PDRC ill become available. Since litigation is very expensive and requires lawyers, lawyer fees and takes a longer time, SMC ill be faster and cheaper overall. Moreover, the mediator appointed at SMC is not a judge but rather, a professional with technical expertise and field experience in the matter being disputed. This ensures a more practical judgement as compared to at PDRC, where the mediator is a judge of the Subordinate Courts. 4) A business which has not chosen to go for SMC will go for mediation services offered by the court at PDRC as many people may be unfamiliar/unaware about mediation at SMC being an option and thus filed for litigation directly. After being made aware of the option of mediation, many would go for PDRC as it wastes less time, since litigation usually involves long waiting periods after applying for litigation to go to trial. Thus, most would just try mediation first and only proceed with litigation if mediation at PDRC fails, especially since it is free. Given that litigation has started, both parties are also more likely to compromise than before. 5) Yes, you can go for arbitration even if both the businesses are local. 6) The business can negotiate with the lawyer, or choose instead to have the bill taxed in court ie have the bill examined by the court to see if it has indeed been overcharged. • 4. Expectancy Violations Theory Of Expectancy Expectancy Violations Theory Every day we make predictions. Its subconscious, but we do. Imagine meeting someone for the first time and you predicted shaking the person s hand. In fact, you may have even extended your hand out, if the person you were meeting took the hand and pulled it into a hug, you have just experienced a violation of what you expected to happen. This is called expectancy violations theory. The expectancy violations theory was developed by Judee Burgoon. The theory is an in depth look into how people respond to an offense to what they perceive as a social norm. Individuals make predictions based on their past interactions and have compiled their own expectations. Expectancy violations include personal space. Personal space is the distance that a person prefers to be from others. Personal space is subjective to every individual s preference and can be influenced by their cultural background. Edward Hall who coined the term, proxemics, said Americans have four proxemics zones. The first being the intimate distance about zero to eighteen inches, the next was called personal distance which was eighteen inches to four feet, then third proxemics zone was named social distance which was from four feet to 12 feet, and finally the last zone was public distance which was twelve feet to 15 feet. Hall taught that we shouldn t be incentive to other special cultures and that it was important to adjust our non verbal behavior to accommodate others (Griffin et al., ... • 6. Competition And Sustainability For Reducing Production Costs Competition and sustainability in the third party IT contracting industry in the United States are driven by economic factors such as outsourcing, globalization, mergers, and acquisitions (Rose Anderssen, Baldwin, Ridgway, 2011). In turn, these factors shape and transform third party IT contracting companies (Jancikova Brychta, 2009). IT outsourcing (ITO) is a business solution for reducing production costs (Desar McGee, 2010). This approach is used frequently in the operation of call centers to provide customer service. For example, in Germany, a labor regulatory framework is used to reduce labor costs in the operation of registered companies (Weinkopf, 2009). Work is outsourced to less developed countries with less costly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Representatives of most IT companies, particularly call centers, use cloud computing software to allow connectivity and sharing of resources in company data centers (Beverakis, Dick, Cecez Kecmanovic, 2009). Cloud computing software is an advanced tool used in outsourcing, particularly for communications, because of the capacity to collect and access massive amounts of data. This software is commonly operated in a data center, which allows access to associated data in a variety of ways (Anthes, 2010). Because most call centers operate using cloud computing, third party IT contracting security is a primary concern (Anthes, 2010; Gatewood, 2009). During the 1980s and 90s, outsourcing organizational activities became the standard for many organizations (Kahai et al., 2011). Outsourcing, as a part of an organization s overall strategic plan, has been effective in helping achieve organizational goals and objectives (Kahai et al., 2011). Currently, many organizations incorporate outsourcing into the strategic plan, and this trend will probably increase in the future (Heikkila Heikkila, 2010). Although outsourcing will not solve all of the problems inherent in attempting to achieve competitive advantages and organizational cost reductions in an organization, the practice is increasingly part of an organization s overall comprehensive strategy in the business world (Andreff, 2009). In the end, the theory lost in describing hadrons to the standard model of particle physics. The standard model of particle physics and why it is not the complete picture According to the standard model there are matter particles and there are force carrier particles. The matter particles are the 6 quarks and 6 leptons. The quarks come in three generations. The first generation is the up quark and the down quark. The second generation is the charm quark and the strange quark. The third generation is the top quark and the bottom quark. The quarks also have a property that is called colour. They can be red, blue, green, antired, antiblue or antigreen. The property colour, does not refer to actual colour. Colour is meaningless on that scale. The quarks combine to form white. The six leptons are the electron, the electron neutrino. the muon, the muon neutrino, the tau and the tau neutrino. The neutrinos have very small mass and are neutral in electric charge, while the other leptons have a larger mass and have electric charge. There are also the force carrier particles. There are four forces, the electromagnetic force, the weak force, the strong force and gravity. For each force there is a boson. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Sentences By Bonaventure When one believes in God he naturally revealed to them through the goodness in his creation. By looking at the surrounding world one can see God s fingerprints. In his work, Sentences, Bonaventure modestly defines creation as as the loving outflow of a loving God whose infinite dynamic goodness is shared in a limited dynamic way. Creation is God s other. God doesn t have to create since God is infinitely bountiful and self communicative within Himself. Creation flows out of the infinite fountain of divine self diffusive goodness because God is creative and loving. The Father freely desires to create because God is love, and perfect love can never be self contained it must be shared. Bonaventure indicates that the world exists by virtue of the free creative power of divine love. Creation is a free act of divine goodness spilling forth from the infinite divine community of love. Bonaventure uses the term emanation to describe the expression of creation from the loving community of a triune God. Emanation used in the Christian sense means that creation flows out of the infinite, transcendent one. Bonaventure metaphorically writes, Creation is like a river, which flows from a spring, spreads throughout the land to purify and fructify it, and eventually flows back to its point of origin. This image speaks to the intimate connection between creation and the triune God as well as creation s cyclical nature. Bonaventure writes that creation can find its origin in a single ... The West side of the Island has near desert like conditions, while the summit of Waialeale is the wettest spot in the world, with an average rainfall of almost 500 inches per year. Normally, the rugged, mountainous interior has much more rainfall than the coastal areas where most communities are located. The Maritime Tropical air mass highly influences Kalalau Valley, Kauai. With its warm and humid weather that it brings in we see how the Island of Kauai goes from stable to conditionally unstable. The convectional lifting of the air masses around the Island of Kauai shows how an air mass passes a maritime source and it causes lifting in the air mass. If the conditions of the Island are unstable then the lifting is sustained and clouds develop. This is why the temperatures and the rainfall vary with certain spots. For example, Average rainfall ranges from 35 inches at poipu Beach to 444 inches at the summit of Waialeale. The general circulation that influences Kalalau Valley is the Northeast trade winds. The subtropical high and the southeast trade winds affect the valley as well. Mainly the northeast trade winds and the southeast trade winds influence the state of the Hawaiian Islands. The Island of Kauai and Kalalaua Valley are located in the Tropical Rainforest region. The pattern of precipitation and temperature for Kauai between January 1st and December 31st, was between 45 and 70 for temperature in Fahrenheit. The minimum temperature is about 50 ... Three doctors including Morgentaler set up an abortion clinic that allowed women to have an abortion without a certification of approval. He was later charged with illegal abortion under section 251 of the Criminal Code. Morgentaler argued that women had full right on deciding whether or not they wanted an abortion. This law was struck down as unconstitutional as it violated a woman s right according to section 7 on the Charter. Another example to support my statement involves the case R. V. Big M Drug Mart. Big M Drug Mart was charged in Calgary for unlawfully opening their store on a Sunday. They disagreed to the Lord s Day Act because not every Canadian citizen had to have a religion. These are important words, because theater is valued in our world today, and was especially important during the Middle Ages. The church was the main source of order and security during this time. Going to heaven was the only thing the people really lived for because they had nothing else. Theater was one of the few things the people of this time could find entertainment in. Theater helped the people escape from the unexciting and rough world they lived in, and allowed them to be placed in an exciting new world. There were many different types of plays during the Middle Ages: traveling performers, liturgical dramas, vernacular plays, cycle plays, and morality plays. Mystery plays were also a type of vernacular drama, and were very close to liturgical plays. These plays were usually acted by churchmen ( Vernacular ). As the church s control over the plays decreased, cycle plays came in. Cycle productions were made up of several short plays. Unlike liturgical drama, these plays did not have to be religious. Depending on the type, cycle productions could be relatively short, or they could take days to finish. Three hundred actors were not unusual for these plays (Robinson). Just like with other parts of society during the Middle Ages, women were not in theater. All of these plays were impacted or controlled by the church. There are also many important symbols to look out for. In the narratives The Epic of Gilgamesh and Noah and the Flood both describe floods. Important characters are mentioned. The main heroes are Utnapishtim and Noah where they both are worthy for their god or gods. There are many gods involved with Utnapishtim whereas with Noah there is only one. La Sylphie And Giselle Research Paper La Sylphide and Giselle, romantic ballets written in the Romantic era of the 19th century, revolutionized ballet by introducing the spirituality of Romantic poetry and literature to the world of dance. These ballets were brought to life through the tip of Marie Talioni s toes, an Italian French ballerina who is known for her graceful, almost evanescent dancing. La Sylphide and Giselle played an important role in creating a fundamental change in ballet through its portrayal of supernaturalism. Wal Mart s stance on not allowing unions can also be accredited to their cost leadership approach. When I outline Wal Mart s business policy at the start of this essay, I suggest that they were a central control based organisation that tried to ensure it controlled all aspects of the firm. This is linked to cost leadership, by having tight control they know exactly where money is going and where it is coming from which allows for better development of efficiency. This notion of control is especially noticeable on their management of employees, for example through such action as cutting hours, understaffing, minimum wage levels and stopping overtime. If they were to allow a Union to be formed then employees would be able to group together to try and abolishes they tools. The Journey From Darkness To Light In Mccarthy s The Road McCarthy s novel and Hillcoat s film adaptation of The Road portray a father and son s arduous journey for survival, through key scenes, themes and flashbacks. The father and son in The Road go from darkness to light in their journey from a desolate unspecified location to a better and more inviting place and future. From the very beginning McCarthy creates a strong image by repeating nothing and ash , words that suggest darkness, introducing to the reader a world where people and places names are nameless and the darkness is a state of being. The motif of light appears at the end of the novel, suggesting a possible shade of faith. The author describes this in the scene of the boy watching over his dying father a fading light, the light of a candle . However, Hillcoat s film adaptation does not capture the vast, crushed emptiness of the world envisioned by McCarthy. The film contains hope, demonstrated by the brighter lighting and continuous flashbacks portraying bright colours of nature. The film adaption also features live animals such as birds which symbolise hope. In the novel, McCarthy shows hope by describing fish swimming in the stream, whereas Hillcoat portrayed hope by showing a live beetle fly from an open can. Christians have to work hard, not only on work, but also in their presentation of Christianity. The second connection to the sin of Adam and Eve would be the list that is given in Romans of all the sin that the people of Rome are committing. It is no coincidence that worse and worse consequences to sin have come about since the fall of man. There is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God. All have turned away they have together become worthless; there is not one who does good, not even one. Their throats are open graves; their tongues practice deceit, the poison of vipers is on their lips. Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness. Their feet are swift to shed blood; ruin and misery mark their ways, and the way of peace they do not know. There is not fear of God before their eyes (Romans 3:11 18, New International Version). The most prominent correlation between Genesis and Romans would be that sin is worse than it was at the fall of man and just as Adam and Eve sinned; man is still sinning. As Jack Solomon wrote in his essay Masters of Desire, We Americans dream of rising about the crowd, of attaining a social summit beyond the reach of ordinary citizens (1). He is basically saying that Americans want to be better then the people around them and this belief is what marketers feast on, creating status symbols like Rolex, Mercedes, BMW, etc. One advertisement that crosses my mind in terms of using elitism would be the new U2 iPod Special Edition advertisement. This promotes an iPod with a black cover and laser engraved signatures of the U2 band members; everything else is similar to a regular iPod; whereas, the price is $50 more. People are led into believing that the U2 iPod is better than the regular one only because it is endorsed by U2. Another ironic detail is that a normal iPod itself is a product of elitism, because even though it has similar functions to a Sony or any other MP3 player, it costs $100 more only because it comes with the signature white headphones. Through the reading of the thirteenth and fourteenth chapters from the Analects, one can conclude that Confucius taught governmental morality, the behavior of a ruler, how rulers should maintain order, and mistakes of rulers. Confucius taught that government should be strict and precise. In government, princes were to appoint the minister by following the rules of propriety. Ministers were to follow the orders of the prince with adherence. The ruler should appoint office positions to whom they know. In government, the ruler must rectify himself and others. Confucius thought that the first thing to be done in a government was to rectify names to ensure social harmony. The rectifying of names was crucial because they needed to be correct so that the language of things was the truth. The language of things needed to be truthful to ensure success of things. Essay about The Psychology of Robert Frost’s Nature Poetry The Psychology of Robert Frost s Nature Poetry Robert Frost s nature poetry occupies a significant place in the poetic arts; however, it is likely Frost s use of nature is the most misunderstood aspect of his poetry. While nature is always present in Frost s writing, it is primarily used in a pastoral sense (Lynen 1). This makes sense as Frost did consider himself to be a shepherd. Frost uses nature as an image that he wants us to see or a metaphor that he wants us to relate to on a psychological level. To say that Frost is a nature poet is inaccurate. His poetry is in the main psychologically oriented with emphasis on specific recurring themes, which include, but are not limited to, loneliness, retreat, spirituality, darkness, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The contrast between the humans and nature enables Frost to deal with and illustrate significant issues affecting humans. A very interesting point regarding Frost s relationship with nature is that he views it with ambiguity. Most assume that Frost is a nature lover; however, while this is true in part, Frost also views nature as having the capability of being destructive. Lynen speaks of this duality by saying, You cannot have one without the other: love of natural beauty and horror at the remoteness and indifference of the physical world are not opposites but different aspects of the same view (7). On speaking of Frost s dualistic view of nature, Phillip L. Gerber states, For nature is hard as she is soft, she can destroy and thwart, disappoint, frustrate, and batter (132). Robert Frost views nature as an alien force capable of destroying man , but on the flip side, he also views man s struggle with nature as a heroic battle (quoted in Thompson). In his poem Our Hold on the Planet Frost illustrates this point by saying, There is much in nature against us. But we forget: Take nature altogether since time began Including human nature, in peace and war, And it must be a little more in favor of man, Say a fraction of one percent at the very least, Or our number living wouldn t be steadily more, Our hold on the planet wouldn t have so increased. They were not enemies, they were not criminals, and they were nothing earthly now nothing but black shadows of disease and starvation, lying confusedly in the greenish gloom. (Conrad 31). Marlow recognizes that the slaves casted in chains were not of any threat nor were they dangerous criminals. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Furthermore, his experience in the Congo made him feel that the entire journey was like a weary pilgrimage amongst hints of nightmares (Conrad 79). Pilgrimage may sound light filled and blessed with great intentions. However, the goal itself is not so righteous. It is more of an act of robbery, violence, greed, and power than nobility. Whereas, In Brave New World, John the savage is a white male who is set aside from both Civilization and the savage reservations. He was born from an actual womb, which is prohibited by the state, but is also not physically similar to the those in the savage reservations; therefore, he is excluded by both parties. • 32. Analysis Of An Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge by Ambrose Bierce, is an eerie short story about a man who believes he has escaped from death but in reality, he was dreaming the whole time and is killed by the Union soldiers. I found it interesting that Farquhar truly believed that he escaped his death. Narration is a huge component with this story. Without the literary devices used, the story would not flow and the readers would not understand why the story is told the way it is. Themes that stand out within the text are the war, perception and death. This story reflects on how a person who is in danger creates a distorted perception of a serious or death threatening event. The short story starts off with a man ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Bierce breaks up the story by firstly explaining what is happening at that moment, it then moves to a description of Farquhar, and lastly the story moves to Farquhar s distorted perception of his reality and his death. The story is well descripted which helps the reader understand what is going on, the descriptions also allow the reader to know what is going on around Farquhar and what he is seeing. The story is written in third person narrative, which is an omniscient narrator. As a reader, the narrator gave lots of information but left a big chunk of information out. Throughout the whole story, we get all our information from the narrator. The only thing the narrator did not inform us about is that half the of the story was not real. I believe this was done to show the readers that your perception is not always true. Bierce also used foreshadowing in the beginning of the story. In the first half of the story Farquhar mentioned a plan to escape If I could free my hands, I might throw the noose and spring into the stream. By diving I could evade the bullets and, swimming vigorously, reach the bank, take to the woods and get away home. , he knew it wasn t possible to get out of his situation but was optimistic.
