The Art of Benin Essay
Why is the ownership of Benin Art so controversial?
The ownership of Benin Art could have been so controversial for a number of reasons. Most notably I
would say, is due to the Anthropologists seeing it as a cultural insight into the history of Benin
however when people were introduced to start looking at the artefacts from also a more artistic
approach, this, for the anthropologists was taking the cultural effect away from it. Some people may
have felt hostile to how these artefacts were obtained from Benin to start with. We are informed that
they were forcibly removed from their origin by the Westerners and therefore, the natives, especially,
felt that this was and is where they belonged and not in a European Gallery. Some see it ... Show more

The main issue lies in the fact that these are key artefacts for Benin and hold a huge part of the culture
and history, which for obvious reasons, make these Sculptures more than just an art piece for outsider
people to look at. These all hold meaning to the people of Benin and Africa, yet they have been taken
away.
Everybody sees art from a different perspective; it will signify something to one person that won t
necessarily be the same as the next person who observes it. However, the problem here is that to the
Africans, these artefacts have more or less the same meaning and explanation to them all, symbolising
the same things, and cultural events, changes, a description of their history almost. Which therefore
really makes you feel where they belong is back in Africa, their true home with representing their true
meaning. On the other hand, the debate lies in those who believe the artefacts can be represented in
Western countries. Note they do not at any point say they are in the right place by being in the Western
side but they do believe that their presence in national galleries throughout much of Europe is and will
only be a positive thing for the Africans and the Europeans
This view is highlighted by the situation of which we find ourselves in today, for example, very
prejudice, biased and unfounded opinions cause much conflict between races, cultures religions and
countries and this is

What Is History Hope For The American Future
American History: Hope for The American Future People look at the future as an opportunity to adjust
their life, because of the things that happened to them in the past. We should not just as one or two
people look at the past, but we all should look back and study on these historical events. As
Americans, we can use historical data or a personal view. People make mistakes everyday, because we
are human and sin is in our nature. Sin is an evil and a corrupt element everyone has. Sin has shaped
the United States in an UnGodly manner. Adam and Eve are historical for not just America to look at
but the whole world. God told Adam and Eve that they had full reign over all of the Garden of Eden,
but one tree. God told them to never eat from that tree as it was the forbidden tree. In Genesis 3:3 God
says, You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch
it, lest you die. That does not have anything to do with American history but is a very helpful event to
study. American history has bountiful events we should look at, I will be giving you some events of
the U.S. to look upon. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Abraham Lincoln, one of the most beloved presidents in history, was assassinated on April 14, 1865. A
man named John Wilkes Booth was the man who killed Lincoln. Killed by a single man shows again
how our security needs to progress and be more protective. Although this was in 1865, we can still
look upon it to help us with future events. Abraham Lincoln said, the best part about the future is that
it comes one day at a time. In my mind, I believe Abraham Lincoln said that to tell us to take our time,
try your best not to mess up, and if you mess up you have another day

Noodles And Company Problem Analysis
Introduction
Noodles and Company, a fast casual dining restaurant, whose founder is Aaron Kennedy. Aaron
thought of the idea in 1993 while eating at an Asian noodle diner in NYC. He opened his first
restaurant in Boulder, Colorado. It was opened on October third, 1995. Noodles and Company was not
his start though, he has also worked for Oscar Meyer, Pepsi, and Cato Gobe.
Other persons that played significant roles include President and Co CEO, Ken Keyme; Chief
Financial Officer/EVP, Mary Beth Lewis; COO, Joe Serafin; Executive Chef, Ross Kamens; and
Chief Development Officer/EVP, Thomas Weigand. Many of these people helped in the development
of Noodles and Company, and helped the company begin to grow in the late 1990 s.
Problem Analysis
First off, the competition faced by Noodles and Company is quite brutal. This competition includes
but is not limited to, Chipotle and Cheese Cake Factory. Chipotle offers consumers good quality
Mexican food, for an affordable price. This draws away consumers who would be normally eating at
an Noodles and Company. Cheese Cake Factory hurts Noodles and Company even more so, because
they offer larger variety in their menu. Cheese Cake Factory s menu spans from a variety of different
cultures. Cheese Cake Factory also has a specialty item, cheese cake. This item pulls the attention of
consumers.
Secondly, you shouldn t open thirty two new operations in the next year, solely because you have the
capital to do so. With competition as it is,

Hummbert s Innocence
Time is the one constant in life that one cannot change and both Humbert Humbert and Keats try to
evade it by trying to stop time. In Ode on a Grecian Urn, resembling John Keats, Humbert Humbert
envies the past youth and innocence that transforms overtime into a relationship of distrust and
disillusion. One can see through textural evidence that Humbert craves the innocence of a past
relationship that was uncompleted though his desire to replicate this relationship with Lolita. Humbert
wants to keep this perfect image of youth and innocence alive through his desires just as Keats wants
to be a perfect image that never changes on a Grecian Urn so that time never passes.

Ronald Regan
Ronald Reagan, My American Hero
October 5, 2014
English 101
Ronald Reagan was more than just our nation s 40th President, he was a remarkable leader. Winning
the Governor election by more than 1 million votes, and President of the United States for two terms,
America was needing a fearless figure in front of economic, domestic and international threats this
nation was experiencing. He brought lower tax rates, negotiated the nuclear arms treaty with the
Soviet Union, and influenced the tear down of the Berlin wall and the ending the Cold War without
firing a shot. Reagan left Office in 1989 and said, We meant to change the nation, but instead we

the growth of the state workforce, but he also approved tax increases to balance the state budget. ( The

Governor Reagan worked with Democratic majority in the state legislature to endorse a major reform
to the welfare system in 1971( The White House , n.d). The reform reduced the number of people
receiving state aid while increasing the benefits for those who remained eligible. During his tenure as
governor, Reagan chaired the Republican Governors Association from 1968 to 1969. ( The White

LA spends public dollars on sports (esp. NFL) operation that boost billions in yearly profit and counts

West Broadway, Or `` D Street ``
West Broadway, or D Street , is a state sponsored housing development in South Boston,
Massachusetts, whose history is plagued by delinquency, violence, and death. Constructed in 1949, on
a newly acquired 25 acre plot in Southie s Lower End , West Broadway Housing Development was to
serve as temporary housing for veterans of the World Wars. By the early 1970s, however, the
development would be 972 apartments for low income families, and would be known as the worst
type of lower class welfare housing. Built on South Boston s solid, naturally formed land, as opposed
to the neighborhood s man made areas, coupled with its proximity to the downtown district, D Street

As Michael Patrick McDonald contends, South Bostonians think of Southie as the best place in the
world , and there is a silence that consumes the residents when it comes to discussing the woes of the
past. And in such a physically and culturally secluded area of the City of Boston, it is unlikely that
anything the citizens are not willing to discuss would be otherwise recorded. In speaking of lost
history, it is important to question the history far beyond the past 60 years. It is widely known that
Native Americans inhabited the Boston dating back 6,000 years. Nonetheless, many of their artifacts
have been lost over the years. However, over the past two years, Native American artifacts have been
discovered in the Andrew Square section of South Boston, not far from D Street. While it is likely that
most artifacts are lost forever because of the disregard for the area during development in the 1950s,
further exploration may be able to call attention to a distant history. Andrew Square too went through
radical development throughout the 20th century with no mention of Native American presence, and I
have not personally come across any literature concerning Indian history in relation to South Boston
or immediate areas, such as the Polish

When competitors offer a lower price, it will enhance the possibility of the customer changing the
purchase behavior (Wathne et al., 2001), and also undermine the consumer s consumption inertia for
the original company. The study found that there are three issues existing in the studies of customer
purchasing behavior in the fast food industry: (1) Why can consumers rapidly return in such a short
period of time after a fast food industry negative news outbreak, or even not be impacted at all.
Therefore, regarding the factors that impact customer loyalty in the fast food industry, in addition to
customer satisfaction, are there any other important impact factors? (2) The fast food industry is
different from the general food retailer. It has the characteristics of being rapid, convenient, and
having a low price; however, the commonly seen customer satisfaction model (e.g. American
Customer Satisfaction Index; European Customer
Customer Satisfaction Index) cannot really present these characteristics. (3) Inertial behavior exists in
the food purchasing behavior (Carrasco et al., 2005). However, there have been no scholars who have
applied it to explore the relation between customer satisfaction and loyalty in the fast food industry. It
can be seen that there is an important study gap that exists in the exploration of customer satisfaction
and loyalty in the fast food industry; therefore,

Charlie Strong Character Analysis
As the kick off to the college football season rapidly approaches, the start of a new era is ready to get
underway in Austin, Texas. The Longhorns finished the season 8 5 last year, with a rough beginning
that saw the firing of Defensive Coordinator Manny Diaz by the second game of the season. The team
came together midseason to put together a string of victories during conference play, including a
surprise upset of the 14 point favorite Oklahoma Sooners. The season ended on a bad note with
embarrassing losses to conference rivals Oklahoma State and Baylor and with an awful performance
in the Alamo Bowl against Oregon.
After 16 years of coaching the Longhorn football program, Head Coach Mack Brown, a man that won
it all in 2005 and nearly won it all again in 2009, gives up the reigns to Coach Charlie Strong. Charlie

Chiquita in Colombia: Funding Paramilitary Groups to Protect Business and Employees
Presented by: Valerie Reese
Case Summary:
United Fruit Company, a company that grows bananas in Central America and exports them to North
America and Europe, became Chiquita Brands International in 1984 through a series of mergers and
control changes (Maurer, 2012, p. 485). Chiquita Brands relocated its headquarters to Cincinnati,
Ohio, and began to expand its holdings in land and shipping (Maurer, 2012, p. 485).

The company could have closed down and sold its banana plantation in Colombia, but Chiquita let the
atrocities continue for years. Perhaps Chiquita was following the analytical framework of
utilitarianism. Chiquita may have thought that making these payments to paramilitary groups was
protecting more workers than it was harming; therefore, it was the right thing to do.
Knowing that paramilitary groups had murdered Chiquita workers, one would assume continuing to
make payments to these groups would be wrong. When Chiquita continued making payments and
workers were still being massacred, one should consider stopping the payments and selling the
farmland. Perhaps Chiquita could even relocate the banana plantation and help relocate the workers to
a more secure area.
Chiquita faced legal challenges by doing business in a politically unstable foreign environment. A
lesson learned from this case is to keep up with and always abide by the laws set in the foreign
country, as well as one s own country. Following the laws and making sure one knows the laws is
good advice for any firm starting a business in a similarly volatile

Accounting Systems And The Operation Of A Business
Accounting systems are important to the operation of a business. They system helps organize a lot of
information that helps owners make necessary decisions regarding their companies. It also helps keep
up with purchases and sales and other things such as stocks. The system helps make sure that a
business can afford certain items. Keeping good records is a mandatory requirement of a successful
business. If the records are off by a lot, or even a little, it can change the whole look of the business in
regard to taxes, investors, and many other important aspects of business. Another important aspect of
business that owners must understand is what assets and liabilities are, and also the stockholders
equity. These are all shown in detail on the balance sheet which is discussed in the next paragraph. An
asset in its simplest form is a resource owned by a business. This could be anything from cash and
equipment, to patents and trademarks. Liabilities are debts or other payments that the company owes.
These can range from notes and bonds payable to deferred taxes and accrued liabilities from the past.
The last thing an owner must understand is the stockholders equity. This is the claim that the owner
has to the assets. These are all related and shown in detail on a balance sheet. As the name implies, the
assets must equal the liabilities plus the stockholders equity. These three things are used to determine
many things including assets to debt ratio which can help determine

The purpose of this memo is to define technical writing, relate it to my field of healthcare
management, and describe the audience (or audiences) for technical communication in the healthcare
setting.
Summary
Technical writing is used daily when communicating between professionals and consumers within a
business. Specifically, in a healthcare setting, technical writing must be successfully implemented for
a hospital to run smoothly. It must be easily understood and address a wide range of audiences that

A technical writer s principal task is to assist users who need specific information about a product and
provide directions on how to accomplish a task or other types of activities. Technical writers also
translate complex ideas and procedures into simpler writing, making it easier for the audience to

To be clear
To be concise
To be comprehensive
As a healthcare management and leadership major, technical writing plays a very important role in
running and operating a hospital or assisted living facility. Without a clear and concise method of
communication between the writer and other healthcare professionals, a hospital will not function
properly. Some methods of technical writing in healthcare include:
Communicating through printed documents or technology, such as medical forms, emails, text
messages or social media
Providing written directions about how to do a specific, such as a medical procedure
Translating complex medical terminology into simpler writing, making it easier for employees and

The Frozen Patterns Of Language
2.2.1 Archaic Terms
Archaic terms according to Baker are The frozen patterns of language (as cited in El Farahaty, 2015,

‫الذكر‬ ‫سالف‬ the aforementioned, ‫المذكور‬ the said (2015, p.66). These expressions are used at most in
formal and legal texts.
2.2.2. Religious Words
Religious terms are terms in Arabic mainly influenced by religion as words of praying or calling upon
the name of God in situations. According to El Farahaty, in some contracts religious sentences are the

His is a pronoun used instead of the word God .
2.2.3. Formal Words
Formal words, according to El Farahaty, is a style of language where formality exists widely in forms
of political contexts and honorary titles (2015, p.62). For instance, according to Mansoor His

Tim Draper s Business Analysis
As one recent article on the West Valley database noted, venture capitalist investor, Tim Draper, is
proposing a voter initiative on Congress to split California into 6 states. Today, researchers have been
observing areas of California that place either greater or lesser importance on decisions about laws,
taxes, and public policy, thus some counties are lacking in affordable housing and quality
infrastructure. The fact that our state lies between the top ten worst governments to do business with
was sufficient reason for Tim Draper s plan to balance California s resources by dividing it into 6
sovereign states. According to Draper, since California demonstrates many subjects of interest

At that level of organization, each state can join the discussion for creating their own laws, electing
new officials, and focus upon serious priorities such as environmental concerns and helping people

demanding issue of the year, record high water prices, is distrustful of California s current economic
policy. His article, Time for a Fresh Approach to Helping People Under the Water Crisis , argues that
rising water prices carries over to consumers paying higher prices for produce, tree nuts, and dairy,
therefore all of these commodities have serious potential to be further increased. In making an
argument for dividing California into 6 states, that movement of unity primarily based on being apart
of a new state will be opportunistic for people to save more water, or else millions of Americans will

around you. Others are tiny, but can still lead to terrible circumstances. How we choose to cope with
our mistakes is our decision. When you hold the guilt in your heart, it can damage your entire life. In
the story The Seventh Man by Haruki Murakami, a character who goes by the name of the seventh
man has this situation occur in his life when his best friend K. dies right before his eyes. The seventh
man takes the blame for the death and lets it haunt him for the remainder of his living. The seventh
man should have forgiven himself for the death of K. The seventh man grew up in the Providence of

Summary Of An American Folk Tale By Americo Paredes
With His Pistol in His Hand by Americo Paredes is an American folk tale about taking place in 1901
along the Texas Mexico border. Paredes tells the story of Gregorio Cortez a Mexican farmer living on
the south Texas Border who was made a hero by his people. The second novel is that of Chester
Himes If He Hollers Let Him Go. Both stories deal with the issues of violence and racism, although in
very different ways. Based on both works, I believe that Bob Jones figure leaves a more lasting and
long term consequence of racism. Chester Himes novel about Bob Jones has somewhat of an
autobiographical touch to it. It is more persuasive in the way that, he and Bob have a lot in common.
Even though Paredes character focuses on a real character he is made into a fictional, whereas Bob
Jones may or may not be representative of some of the author s actual experiences were, leaven the
reader or audience with a longer lasting impression of the hardship during those times.
Gregorio Cortez was an unknown man until 1901.He was considered an outlaw but was also a likeable
young man according to others. Cortez had never been in trouble with the law. Cortez was one of three
sons, and he lived on a farm with his parents. Cortez only occasionally had some disputes with
American farmers. Cortez tried to stay out of any kind of trouble but one day, Cortez received a visit
from Sheriff Morris. Sheriff Morris, a white American was searching for horse thieves. There had

Misconceptions About Vaccines
Vaccines are largely debated within today s world. There isn t much debate within the medical
community, but there is debate between the medical community and the general public. There are
some people in the public who have certain misconceptions about vaccines, a couple being that
vaccines cause autism or autoimmune disorders. However, these claims have been studied extensively,
and there is no scientific evidence backing these claims. These misconceptions claim that the vaccines
affect the lymphatic, circulatory, and the immune system. The lymphatic system is the system of
vessels, cells, and organs that carries excess fluids to the bloodstream and filters pathogens from the
blood (OpenStax, 2017). The main function of the lymphatic system ... Show more content on

The main function of the circulatory system is to keep blood pumping throughout the body, pumping,
on average, 5 liters a minute. Along with pumping blood, the heart pumps waste, nutrients, and
oxygen to other organs. Each artery and vein has a specific function, carrying blood to and from
different parts of the body. The carotid arteries, both external and internal supply blood to the head.
The celiac artery supplies the majority of blood to the trunk, and it is the only artery which allows the
organs it supplies to receive an adequate blood supply. The subclavian arteries are the main arteries of
the upper extremities, but eventually branch off into the axilla, where they fittingly become known as
the axillary arteries. Finally, the second largest artery of the body, the femoral artery, is the main blood
supplier to the lower limbs. The two main veins of the body are the inferior and superior vena cava.
The superior vena cava returns blood to the right atrium from the upper half of the body. The inferior
vena cava does the opposite, carrying blood from the lower half of the body also to the right atrium.
The blood vessels of the circulatory system and the organs of the lymphatic system work in
conjunction in order to maintain homeostasis. The lymphatic system is able to carry excess fluids to
the blood stream, while also filtering pathogens from the blood. 20 liters of plasma

How To Tie A Barbell
Different exercises vary on everything from the range of motion, the amount of weight moved, and
stress put on the body. A exercise or movement can occur using one joint, two joints, three joints, etc.
One exercise that is mainly a strength exercise rather than a hypertrophy exercise would be for
example the hang clean and jerk. Many athletes use this exercise for upper and lower body strength.
From the starting position the barbell with weights on each side is at rest on the ground and by the end
of the movement the barbell should be straight above your head with your arms straight up. There are
a few tips that you should know when performing this exercise for maximal strength purposes and
most importantly safety. For starters, when lifting the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Most of the time when athletes are performing this exercise the weight being moved is extremely high
and heavy for example anywhere for 150 pound to 400 pounds. Nobody can really just use pure
strength to move that kind of weight above their body. Momentum is your best friend which is gonna
help you finish this exercise along with the ability of your strength obviously. To finish the lift you
will bend at your knees again not to where you squat all the way down but to where you can feel
yourself building up enough momentum to jerk the weight up above you. Finally you should stomp
your feet against the floor to finish the momentum jerk press portion of this lift. Now the lift is
complete and the barbell should be high above your body and with the lift safely performed. This
exercise will help with lower body strength with the squating motion and upper body strength with the
getting under the bar part. This builds core strength and pressing strength which is outstanding for
athletes in many sports such as football, wrestling, baseball, boxing, etc. The best athlete has great

Darden Restaurants lead the casual dining industry producing $7 billion dollars in revenue each year.
Based on the strategic spectrum of segmentation, Darden restaurants target different demographics
with intent of reaching a wide range of consumers.
How does Darden segment and target the sit down dining market? Use the full spectrum of
segmentation variables in your response.
Home of the casual dining experience, Darden has made up about 39% of all sit down restaurant

characteristics. The most common type of segmentation is done by focusing marketing energy on a
specific demographic. Each Darden restaurant caters to a different segment. The different segments

so easy to come by. The reasons for the different structures would be for the excitement that you get
from entering the restaurant. Which is an example of the psychological segmentation that Darden has

Symptoms And Treatment Of Restless Leg Syndrome
Restless leg syndrome, or also known as RLS and Willis Ekbom Disease, is a neurological condition
in which one experiences unpleasant sensations in the legs. The term RLS was introduced by a doctor
named Karl Axel Ekbom. Ekbom had a large number of patients complaining of peculiar and
tormenting paraesthesias deep in the lower legs which led him to find out more. In 1944 he had
already reported 8 patients with the same type of symptoms and by 1945 he had published a doctoral
thesis called Restless legs : a clinical study of a hitherto overlooked disease in the legs characterized
by peculiar paraesthesia ( Anxietas tibiarum ), pain and weakness and occurring in two main forms,

Many of the symptoms occur at primarily at night when one is sleeping or relaxing and can be
unilateral or on both sides. There are two names which is used to describe many of the patient s
sensations, an abnormal sensation is often called paresthesias and an unpleasant, uncomfortable
sensation is called dysesthesias. These two names help to determine the intensity level which ranges in
severity from uncomfortable to painful. Many of the patients go into the doctor and much of the
interview is based off of self reporting and history. It is very important for doctors to listen to these
symptoms to help make a correct diagnosis (Black Grant, 2014, pg 411). 2a Prevalence and
Development of RLS The actually onset of RLS occurs mostly within the second to third decade of

symptoms before the age of 10 (Black Grant, 2014, pg 411). There is an increase in the amount of
people who experience the symptoms and even are diagnosed after reaching the age of 60. Many of
the symptoms continue to grow with age. Although, if there a genetic predisposition to RLS, the onset

Bravo Company in Black Hearts by Jim Frederick Essay
Black Hearts was about the 2005 2006 deployment of the 101st s second brigade s 1 502nd (First
Strike) to Iraq. The book more specifically honed in on Bravo Company and their first platoon s
decent into complete madness throughout the deployment. The 1 502nd and its commander Lt Col
Kunk, was tasked with the mission of getting control of and hold the land in between the Euphrates
and Tigris rivers. Kunk was a particularly difficult man to get along with. He would explode and go on
a tirade over just about anything, big or small. This caused serious problems at meetings when he only
wanted things his way and would personally attack his commanders who he thought he could not trust.

This cause the men to get a lot less time to relax, taking 8 or more hour guard shifts. The redundant,
mundane task of manning the TCPs would make the soldiers restless, tired and complacent; an
extremely dangerous combination when in a combat zone. The TCPs would cause a lot of problems
throughout the entire deployment. The first catastrophe to hit Bravo Company, and 1st platoon in
particular, was the deaths of SSG Nelson and SGT Casica from 3rd SQD. They were both shot point
blank while trying to talk to a familiar civilian that they had spoken to previously while manning a
TCP. This was the start of the downward spiral that 1st platoon went through during the deployment.
Continuing after this incident, the company was still spread very thin, having too many tasks and not
enough people. Having to go out on a 20 hour mission and then have to go back out right after you get
to the FOB hoping for a bit of relaxing time was a serious moral killer. This didn t not help the fact
that 1st platoon already had been taking out bottled anger and remorse for their lost comrades out on
insurgent and civilian alike. To them they were all the enemy. The next big blow the 1st platoon was
the deaths of 1LT Britt and SPC Lopez. During a routine IED sweep of route sportster, 1LT Britt and

Cultural Rape in Chinua Achebe s Things Fall Apart Essay
Cultural Rape In Things Fall Apart
In Things Fall Apart, Achebe shows the ruthlessness of the missionaries in pursuit of new converts.
Domestic support for the missions depended in large measure upon the tangible success of their
preaching, success being reflected in the numbers of conversions. This relentless focus on success
caused the cultural rape of the people of Umuofia.
Achebe even hints at their use of bribery and blackmail in their endeavours. He tells us, the white
missionary had set up a school to teach young Christians to read and write (126). The inference is
clearly that the unconverted heathens were not given this opportunity. Yet bearing in mind the orality
of Nigerian culture, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This presents a clear picture of the sheer rapidity of the colonial project. It seems inevitable that much
indigenous tradition and heritage will be swept away, resulting in feelings of profound cultural
dislocation, and loss of identity.
Yet despite these hardships, the reader cannot escape the feeling the Achebe is not as narrow minded
and bitter as he first appears. He clearly does not object to the discovery of and learning about new
religions and cultures. He presents a strong argument in favour of discussion as a path towards
understanding. In Things Fall Apart, the missionary Mr Brown and Akunna, one of the tribal elders,
often spend long hours in discussion, and although Neither of them succeeded in converting the other
... they learnt more about their different beliefs (147). This demonstrates a mutual relationship, in
which both parties are equally eager to learn when approached on equal terms.
It is not Achebe s intention to demonstrate any superiority an idealistic pre colonial Nigerian existence
might hold over life in Europe. What he seeks to achieve is an illumination of the complicated truth of
African existence (and) a concrete insight into the reality of their existence ( Conch 6. 1 2, 1974,
p.19). As clearly demonstrated in Things Fall Apart, he is making neither excuses nor apologies for
African existence.

Who Is Dido In The Aeneid
On the Deaths of Dido and Turnus
In Virgil s Aeneid, the hero is frequently referred to by the epithet Pius Aeneas, or in English, Aeneas
the True . While pius does not necessarily translate to pious in English, it does carry the connotation of
being good and dutiful, in whatever ways the context demands. In Aeneas case, he is dutiful to the
gods and to the quest they give him, as well as to his homeland, his people, and those close to him in
that order. In the Aeneid, there are two times in particular where his sense of duty conflicts with his
personal interest, and both of these situations end in a death. The first are the events that lead to the

Juno, unwilling to let the Trojans settle in Latium, sets the populace against them. This populace is

between Turnus and Aeneas. The gods intervene on both sides until Jupiter and Venus convince Juno
to surrender, right before the end of the duel. A Fury scares Turnus out of his strength, allowing
Aeneas to win the duel. It s clear that he considers Turnus plea to stretch not your hatred further , until
he sees that his defeated opponent is wearing Pallas baldric as a trophy and kills him on the spot (XII,
338). This death tells the reader more about Aeneas character than Dido s did. In this case, there were
two dutiful options, rather than only the one which had existed in Carthage. On one hand, Aeneas
could have allowed Turnus to go home, following the advice of his father, Anchises, who told him that
the duty of the future Roman civilization was to show mercy to the conquered, and to wage war until
the haughty are brought low. (VI, 173). On the other hand, he could avenge his close friend, Pallas, a
duty of honor. The choice was left to Aeneas the True, to decide which duty he should follow. His
quest is complete: he is in Italy, and either way, this decision will end the war. When he does choose, it
s obviously spur of the moment, allowing the reader to

For A Lady I Know By Countee Cullen
Richard Wright once said, All literature is protest. You can t name a single literary work that is not

to protest the opinions, cultural concepts and ideas that they do not agree with and try to change
people s perception of these ideas. This quotation is valid and provides a compelling argument

The Word Plum And The Snowman By Wallace Stevens Perception
Poetry is subjected to many forms of interpretation as the meaning behind a piece deals a great deal
with one s own perception. When reading the two poems, The Word Plum by Helen Chasin and The
Snowman by Wallace Stevens perception is literally everything. The two poems though vastly
different in tone, style and topic share a commonality in the analyzation of existentialism and how the
passage of time plays a large role in somebody s outlook on life.
During a first read of Chasin s the word plum it becomes very apparent that more than just a plum is
being described here. The thinly veiled fruit references are both innuendos as well as interesting
commentary on the topic of the fleeting nature of pleasure in life. This underlying theme is hinted at
from even the poem s title in which Chasin talks about the word plum, but not an actual plum. Words
in language are used as something similar to a symbolic contract, meaning that not only do words
thrives on the idea of the object of discussion not being present but also the promise that the
representation of the object matches its word. So when Chasin describes the word plum as delicious,
she is really discussing the idea that the word plum because of the idea that is projected on it, is just as
delicious as the plum itself, which leads to an even deeper meaning of how in order for things to be
fleeting absence is just as valid as present. However a plum is not present so the poem relies heavily

Shinto Vs Buddhism Essay
Temple and shrine are both used interchangeably because many visitors to Japan can t tell the
difference. To point out, using these terms interchangeably is like saying a church and synagogue are
equivalent. In Japan, there are two major religions practiced by the Japanese people. A shrine is where
Shinto is practiced and Buddhism is practiced at a temple.
Both Shinto and Buddhism date back to thousands of years. Shinto, a spiritual principle, is an ancient
religion of Japan based on the belief that powerful deities called kami (gods) inhabit both heaven and
earth. According to mythology, various kanami were worshipped by their own individual clans. They

It gained wide acceptance in the following century when the nobility advocated it. Bukkyō, a

In Japan, most people practice both faiths ambiguously as they are nearly parallel to one another.
Shinto primarily focuses on earthly matters, and shrines are often used to host weddings or pray for
good fortune. Whereas Buddhism is considered the religion of spiritual beliefs and practices. Temples
usually host funerals and are a place to pray for ancestors.
You are probably at a Shinto shrine if you cross the threshold of a torii gate, see a pair of guardians

  • 2. The Art of Benin Essay Why is the ownership of Benin Art so controversial? The ownership of Benin Art could have been so controversial for a number of reasons. Most notably I would say, is due to the Anthropologists seeing it as a cultural insight into the history of Benin however when people were introduced to start looking at the artefacts from also a more artistic approach, this, for the anthropologists was taking the cultural effect away from it. Some people may have felt hostile to how these artefacts were obtained from Benin to start with. We are informed that they were forcibly removed from their origin by the Westerners and therefore, the natives, especially, felt that this was and is where they belonged and not in a European Gallery. Some see it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The main issue lies in the fact that these are key artefacts for Benin and hold a huge part of the culture and history, which for obvious reasons, make these Sculptures more than just an art piece for outsider people to look at. These all hold meaning to the people of Benin and Africa, yet they have been taken away. Everybody sees art from a different perspective; it will signify something to one person that won t necessarily be the same as the next person who observes it. However, the problem here is that to the Africans, these artefacts have more or less the same meaning and explanation to them all, symbolising the same things, and cultural events, changes, a description of their history almost. Which therefore really makes you feel where they belong is back in Africa, their true home with representing their true meaning. On the other hand, the debate lies in those who believe the artefacts can be represented in Western countries. Note they do not at any point say they are in the right place by being in the Western side but they do believe that their presence in national galleries throughout much of Europe is and will only be a positive thing for the Africans and the Europeans This view is highlighted by the situation of which we find ourselves in today, for example, very prejudice, biased and unfounded opinions cause much conflict between races, cultures religions and countries and this is ... • 3. What Is History Hope For The American Future American History: Hope for The American Future People look at the future as an opportunity to adjust their life, because of the things that happened to them in the past. We should not just as one or two people look at the past, but we all should look back and study on these historical events. As Americans, we can use historical data or a personal view. People make mistakes everyday, because we are human and sin is in our nature. Sin is an evil and a corrupt element everyone has. Sin has shaped the United States in an UnGodly manner. Adam and Eve are historical for not just America to look at but the whole world. God told Adam and Eve that they had full reign over all of the Garden of Eden, but one tree. God told them to never eat from that tree as it was the forbidden tree. In Genesis 3:3 God says, You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die. That does not have anything to do with American history but is a very helpful event to study. American history has bountiful events we should look at, I will be giving you some events of the U.S. to look upon. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Abraham Lincoln, one of the most beloved presidents in history, was assassinated on April 14, 1865. A man named John Wilkes Booth was the man who killed Lincoln. Killed by a single man shows again how our security needs to progress and be more protective. Although this was in 1865, we can still look upon it to help us with future events. Abraham Lincoln said, the best part about the future is that it comes one day at a time. In my mind, I believe Abraham Lincoln said that to tell us to take our time, try your best not to mess up, and if you mess up you have another day ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Noodles And Company Problem Analysis Introduction Noodles and Company, a fast casual dining restaurant, whose founder is Aaron Kennedy. Aaron thought of the idea in 1993 while eating at an Asian noodle diner in NYC. He opened his first restaurant in Boulder, Colorado. It was opened on October third, 1995. Noodles and Company was not his start though, he has also worked for Oscar Meyer, Pepsi, and Cato Gobe. Other persons that played significant roles include President and Co CEO, Ken Keyme; Chief Financial Officer/EVP, Mary Beth Lewis; COO, Joe Serafin; Executive Chef, Ross Kamens; and Chief Development Officer/EVP, Thomas Weigand. Many of these people helped in the development of Noodles and Company, and helped the company begin to grow in the late 1990 s. Problem Analysis First off, the competition faced by Noodles and Company is quite brutal. This competition includes but is not limited to, Chipotle and Cheese Cake Factory. Chipotle offers consumers good quality Mexican food, for an affordable price. This draws away consumers who would be normally eating at an Noodles and Company. Cheese Cake Factory hurts Noodles and Company even more so, because they offer larger variety in their menu. Cheese Cake Factory s menu spans from a variety of different cultures. Cheese Cake Factory also has a specialty item, cheese cake. This item pulls the attention of consumers. Secondly, you shouldn t open thirty two new operations in the next year, solely because you have the capital to do so. With competition as it is, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Hummbert s Innocence Time is the one constant in life that one cannot change and both Humbert Humbert and Keats try to evade it by trying to stop time. In Ode on a Grecian Urn, resembling John Keats, Humbert Humbert envies the past youth and innocence that transforms overtime into a relationship of distrust and disillusion. One can see through textural evidence that Humbert craves the innocence of a past relationship that was uncompleted though his desire to replicate this relationship with Lolita. Humbert wants to keep this perfect image of youth and innocence alive through his desires just as Keats wants to be a perfect image that never changes on a Grecian Urn so that time never passes. Humbert is enamored with the thought of Lolita and wants to keep her ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 6. Ronald Regan Ronald Reagan, My American Hero October 5, 2014 English 101 Ronald Reagan was more than just our nation s 40th President, he was a remarkable leader. Winning the Governor election by more than 1 million votes, and President of the United States for two terms, America was needing a fearless figure in front of economic, domestic and international threats this nation was experiencing. The book more specifically honed in on Bravo Company and their first platoon s decent into complete madness throughout the deployment. The 1 502nd and its commander Lt Col Kunk, was tasked with the mission of getting control of and hold the land in between the Euphrates and Tigris rivers. Kunk was a particularly difficult man to get along with. He would explode and go on a tirade over just about anything, big or small. This caused serious problems at meetings when he only wanted things his way and would personally attack his commanders who he thought he could not trust. The redundant, mundane task of manning the TCPs would make the soldiers restless, tired and complacent; an extremely dangerous combination when in a combat zone. The TCPs would cause a lot of problems throughout the entire deployment. The first catastrophe to hit Bravo Company, and 1st platoon in particular, was the deaths of SSG Nelson and SGT Casica from 3rd SQD. They were both shot point blank while trying to talk to a familiar civilian that they had spoken to previously while manning a TCP. This was the start of the downward spiral that 1st platoon went through during the deployment. Continuing after this incident, the company was still spread very thin, having too many tasks and not enough people. Having to go out on a 20 hour mission and then have to go back out right after you get to the FOB hoping for a bit of relaxing time was a serious moral killer. This didn t not help the fact that 1st platoon already had been taking out bottled anger and remorse for their lost comrades out on insurgent and civilian alike. To them they were all the enemy. The next big blow the 1st platoon was the deaths of 1LT Britt and SPC Lopez. • 31. Cultural Rape in Chinua Achebe s Things Fall Apart Essay Cultural Rape In Things Fall Apart In Things Fall Apart, Achebe shows the ruthlessness of the missionaries in pursuit of new converts. Domestic support for the missions depended in large measure upon the tangible success of their preaching, success being reflected in the numbers of conversions. This relentless focus on success caused the cultural rape of the people of Umuofia. Achebe even hints at their use of bribery and blackmail in their endeavours. He tells us, the white missionary had set up a school to teach young Christians to read and write (126). The inference is clearly that the unconverted heathens were not given this opportunity. It seems inevitable that much indigenous tradition and heritage will be swept away, resulting in feelings of profound cultural dislocation, and loss of identity. Yet despite these hardships, the reader cannot escape the feeling the Achebe is not as narrow minded and bitter as he first appears. He clearly does not object to the discovery of and learning about new religions and cultures. He presents a strong argument in favour of discussion as a path towards understanding. In Things Fall Apart, the missionary Mr Brown and Akunna, one of the tribal elders, often spend long hours in discussion, and although Neither of them succeeded in converting the other ... they learnt more about their different beliefs (147). This demonstrates a mutual relationship, in which both parties are equally eager to learn when approached on equal terms. It is not Achebe s intention to demonstrate any superiority an idealistic pre colonial Nigerian existence might hold over life in Europe. What he seeks to achieve is an illumination of the complicated truth of African existence (and) a concrete insight into the reality of their existence ( Conch 6. 1 2, 1974, p.19). As clearly demonstrated in Things Fall Apart, he is making neither excuses nor apologies for African existence. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. Who Is Dido In The Aeneid On the Deaths of Dido and Turnus In Virgil s Aeneid, the hero is frequently referred to by the epithet Pius Aeneas, or in English, Aeneas the True . While pius does not necessarily translate to pious in English, it does carry the connotation of being good and dutiful, in whatever ways the context demands. In Aeneas case, he is dutiful to the gods and to the quest they give him, as well as to his homeland, his people, and those close to him in that order. In the Aeneid, there are two times in particular where his sense of duty conflicts with his personal interest, and both of these situations end in a death. The war culminates in the second, less official duel between Turnus and Aeneas. The gods intervene on both sides until Jupiter and Venus convince Juno to surrender, right before the end of the duel. A Fury scares Turnus out of his strength, allowing Aeneas to win the duel. It s clear that he considers Turnus plea to stretch not your hatred further , until he sees that his defeated opponent is wearing Pallas baldric as a trophy and kills him on the spot (XII, 338). This death tells the reader more about Aeneas character than Dido s did. In this case, there were two dutiful options, rather than only the one which had existed in Carthage. On one hand, Aeneas could have allowed Turnus to go home, following the advice of his father, Anchises, who told him that the duty of the future Roman civilization was to show mercy to the conquered, and to wage war until the haughty are brought low. (VI, 173). On the other hand, he could avenge his close friend, Pallas, a duty of honor. The choice was left to Aeneas the True, to decide which duty he should follow. His quest is complete: he is in Italy, and either way, this decision will end the war. When he does choose, it s obviously spur of the moment, allowing the reader to ... The meaning behind this quotes resides in the author s purpose. When an author is telling a story, they cannot avoid bias and their opinions. The purpose of the author writing, poem or prose, is to protest the opinions, cultural concepts and ideas that they do not agree with and try to change people s perception of these ideas. This quotation is valid and provides a compelling argument because if the author is not trying to change something in the world, even something so small, when they are writing, then why are they writing? • 34. The Word Plum And The Snowman By Wallace Stevens Perception Poetry is subjected to many forms of interpretation as the meaning behind a piece deals a great deal with one s own perception. When reading the two poems, The Word Plum by Helen Chasin and The Snowman by Wallace Stevens perception is literally everything. The two poems though vastly different in tone, style and topic share a commonality in the analyzation of existentialism and how the passage of time plays a large role in somebody s outlook on life. During a first read of Chasin s the word plum it becomes very apparent that more than just a plum is being described here. The thinly veiled fruit references are both innuendos as well as interesting commentary on the topic of the fleeting nature of pleasure in life. This underlying theme is hinted at from even the poem s title in which Chasin talks about the word plum, but not an actual plum. Words in language are used as something similar to a symbolic contract, meaning that not only do words thrives on the idea of the object of discussion not being present but also the promise that the representation of the object matches its word. So when Chasin describes the word plum as delicious, she is really discussing the idea that the word plum because of the idea that is projected on it, is just as delicious as the plum itself, which leads to an even deeper meaning of how in order for things to be fleeting absence is just as valid as present. However a plum is not present so the poem relies heavily on the reader s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
