Malaria Is A Disease That Affects The World s Poorest
CUNY Nobel Science Challenge Malaria is a disease that affects nearly 600 million people and causes
more than a million deaths a year, the most coming from children under five. This disease is regularly
found in more than 100 countries around the world and affects 40% of the world s population. It is
most commonly transmitted by an infected Anopheles mosquito. The most deadly form of malaria is
known as Plasmodium falciparum because almost all deaths from malaria are caused by this specific
one. Some of the symptoms that are affiliated with this strand of malaria are the destruction of red
blood cells along with complications with the kidneys, lungs, and brain. In more serious cases, it can
cause permanent neurological effects and even death. As the Nobel Assembly said at the
announcement of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, Diseases caused by parasites have
plagued humankind for a millennium and constitute a major global health problem. In particular,
parasitic diseases affect the world s poorest populations and represent a huge barrier to improving
human health and wellbeing . Youyou Tu, one of the winners of the prize, discovered Artemisinin, a
drug that has significantly reduced the mortality rates for patients suffering from malaria by killing the
malaria parasites an early stage of their development. The story on the creation of the drug
Artemisinin is an interesting one. During the Chinese Cultural Revolution, scientist trained in the West

Mary Shelley (MS): Good afternoon, Ms. White. It is a pleasure to meet.
Margaret Bourke White (MBW): Mrs. Shelley, please call me Margaret. What a lovely summer day
for us to converse. Shall we sit and enjoy this rare and anachronistic opportunity?
MS: Margaret, let s. Please call me Mary then. Won t you have some tea?
MBW: Please.
MS: Margaret, how do you find New York City? In my day, New York was fairly new but quickly
gaining quite a reputation.
MBW: New York City is a critical location in the history of the United States as well as in the world. I
was born there quite early in the 20th century, which was an important century for America and New
York was definitely a part of the national, group, and individual identity transformation taking place. I
was a girl during the first great War and a young woman when the Great Depression hit. I could see
the transformation of culture, of the world, of the country, and of women happening before me. My
interest in photography and photojournalism helped me communicate, express, and capture such
changes. Certainly, I am keen to understand your experiences as a writer in Europe. We were born
approximately a century apart and across the pond from each other, as the Brits these days call the
Atlantic. London was the home of the summer Olympics in 2012; thus its reputation as a global hub

Local Adaptation of Plants Essay
In this study, the effect of introducing non local plant material into a certain environment for
restoration purposes was investigated. Several studies already showed that plants exhibit local
adaptation to their sympatric environment (Howe et al., 2003; Savolainen et al., 2007; Leimu and
Fischer, 2008; Salmela, 2014). We hypothesized that if A. arenaria shows evidence of local adaptation,
we expect the plants of the experimental site, and closely related ones, to have a greater performance
than allopatric populations (Vander Mijnsbrugge et al., 2010). Results indicated an increase in survival
with increasing distance from the study site in the first phase of the experiment. In the second phase,
the relation between survival and distance ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, we did not see an effect of the origin of the plants on the condition, so we cannot completely
confirm this theory. Also, since the relation between the distance and survival was positive, we cannot
say we confirmed the theory of local adaptation. In our analysis, we used geographic distance as a
measure for the differentiation between the various populations. In most cases, environmental distance
is the best way to study population divergence ( Joshi et al., 2001; Bischoff et al., 2006; Leimu and
Fischer, 2008; Bischoff and Tremulot, 2011). This implies that populations that are close to each other
but very dissimilar can differ a lot more from each other than populations that are more distant but
more similar (Bischoff et al., 2006). In Leimu and Fisher (2008) they stated that geographical distance
is only a good measure if it is correlated with environmental distance, where the latter can be an
important selective agent for local adaptation. By this, the results could be different with the use of the
environmental distance. Also, the experimental plants were in the field during autumn and winter,
implying that aboveground herbivores were largely absent. It is demonstrated that also aboveground
herbivores can act as selective forces in plant populations, since these herbivores can have strong
negative effects on the plant fitness (Jarosz and Davelos, 1995; Abdala Roberts and Marquis, 2007;
Arany et al., 2009). Taking both

Change In Treasure Island
Forces, conflict, and change are very important factors that shape the identity of a character. Jim
Hawkins, the main character of Treasure Island, is immensely transformed throughout many
challenges, and the forces that cause them. The tragedy of death, the exhilaration of war, and the
environment he was in greatly changed who Jim Hawkins was physically and mentally. The many
battles Jim Hawkins was in strengthened him in many ways. When on his way to Treasure Island, Jim
discovered that more than half the crew was plotting to destroy the captain and his loyal crew.
(Stevenson 61) Soon, when land was reached, fight broke out. Jim had to adapt to what would be the
first, but not the last battle of his life. (Stevenson 76) The conflicts that

The History of American Education
Schools have changed remarkably since they were first introduced centuries ago. Continue reading in
order to find out how the past has shaped education, as we know it. There are six main eras or time
periods in which important things occurred for the American School System, The colonial era, The
growth of public schooling, The progressive era, the segregation and Integration era, the 1960s 1970s,
and the 1980 present era. The first era was the colonial era, because the first schools were started in

It was a way of passing knowledge from one mind to the next. A man named Horance Mann created a
coalition of professional teachers in 1837. This group of teachers was modeled after the Prussian idea
of common schooling , or the notion that all of populace deserved the availability and value of
education, no matter level of proficiency or skin color. Age grading was an idea that Mann had
inquired during his time in Prussia. This idea was originally put into effect in Massachusetts during
1848. Age grading was the design of appointing students by age and placing them into different
grades. The students progressed as time went on, despite what the student s aptitude may be, with the
lecture form of many European universities, in which students were viewed as submissive receivers of
instruction apposed as involved and enthusiastic contributors in instructing one another. Formerly,
students were sectioned into single groups, with ages varying from the young age of 6 to the
adolescence of 14. On the occasion that a student were to terminate a course, they were deemed
graduated from that course, and stepped forward onto the next level of difficulty. During the age of
reconstruction, the freedman s bureau launched the opening of up to 1000 schools for African

Cultural Influences
Cultural Influences
You enter another country and notice many odd, unique things you ve never seen or interacted with
before. In this world, there are many cultures that express themselves differently.
We re all born and raised differently from each other . Each culture may do things that contradict with
what we know, but it s how each culture was brought up. It is clear when considering an individual s
education, family, environment, and race that culture is always a huge impact on how someone views
the world.
Education is one cultural influence that makes people view the world in different perspectives. One
text that can relate to this is in An Indian Father s Plea quoting, So I realize he may be slow in
grasping the methods and tools that you are now using in your classroom, ones quite familiar to his
white peers, but I hope you will be patient with him. It takes time to adjust to a new cultural system
and learn new things (Lake 77). The son here was educated differently than his classmates. This
caused the teacher to believe he is slow in learning because he wasn t taught the way they teached.
Another text is by Everyday Use stating, She washed us in a river of make believe, burned us with a
lot of knowledge we didn t necessarily need to know (Walker 60). The daughter tries to teach her
family things that they don t deem is
Aguilar, Manzano, Rugerio, Schott, Zamora 2 necessary or important because it isn t useful for them
in their daily lives. In the end, education is a major factor in how individuals scope the world.
Family is one of the most influential part of someone s perspective on the world s culture. Family
influences their point of view on how they are raised and also how families develop their traditions,
hobbies, and beliefs. For example in In Indian Father s Plea the father said, If you were to ask him
how many months are there in a year, he would probably tell you
13; he has been taught by our traditional people that there are 13 full moons in a year according to the
native tribal calendar (Lake 78). In Everyday Use Maggie learned how to quilt because quilting is pent
off her family s hobbies and their culture. It was grandma Dee and Big Dee who taught her how to
quilt (Walker

This artifact was found in the land of Israel/Palestine. This paper will examine how this object was
produced, what kind of style was used in its production and what it meant to individuals at the time.
On a larger level, trading objects like this one during the Persian Period represent the strength of local
tastes and cultures over nationalistic tensions between Greece and Persia. 2. Introduction The land of

Production of oil in the land of Israel/Palestine created a need for storing the finished products. Huge
pottery operations emerged in order to infiltrate foreign markets all over the Mediterranean basin with
beautiful Greek artistry (Oxford Handbook of Engineering, Ceramic Production ). The Greeks saw a
cultural vacuum to influence Persian society and they ran with it. 3. A Lekythos in the Ancient World
A lekythos (plural: lekythoi) is a container for oil, ointments, and were sometimes used as offerings
for the dead (Folsom, Handbook of Greek Pottery, 175). How did this object come to be? A potter
must start with an idea. The shape of the object was good for the careful pouring required when
dealing with oil. In starting to fashion this idea, the potter first must grab a large ball of clay and lift up
the edges to make the body. Next, the potter places the clay on a pottery wheel and, using various
tools, the potter is able to scrape the base and other areas in order to add ridges. The neck is created
through a small ball of clay that s then ripped apart to form a hollow neck and mouth at the top. The
potter will flatten the rim and turn the neck to get rid of excess clay. Next, the potter will attach the
neck to an open hole on top of t the body. He will then use a sort of place holder in order to make sure
it is applied straight on. Lastly, the handle will be added. The potter will elongate a pear shaped piece
of clay into a handle with a

Spirituality And Mysticism In Varanasi
Banaras is older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend, and looks twice as old as all
of them put together. Mark Twain
Benaras, Kashi or Varanasi, whatever it may be called, this city has been enthralling people from far
and wide, since ages. The spirituality and mysticism of Varanasi, epitomizes everything Indian in a
different and better way than many other cities. Though it is considered as one of the oldest living
cities of the world, yet it presents an incomparable blend of tradition and modernism existing side by

lanes, the art, culture, food and the people; Varanasi keeps unfolding itself like a maze ,which is what
attracts the world to Varanasi.
With the aim to take the city along the path of growth, development and to showcase to the world that

The opportunities which are available to every unemployed worker in the United States are training
programs, health insurance assistance, and food and emergency aid. With these programs available to
the unemployed in the United States, it is helping put America back to work, and giving people the
opportunity to go back school to be retrained in a new field of work which they didn t have the chance
to do in the past. Since Puerto Rico isn t a state they don t have these programs that assist the
unemployed to help them get back to work, in turn it s causing a big problem for their economy.
The biggest problem for Puerto Rico s economy is the tax incentives for big corporations that establish
operations in Puerto Rico. One of the advantages for a corporation to operate in Puerto Rico is that
they can claim their profits and wages paid up to 60 percent for tax credits, in which does cost the
United States and Puerto Rico billions of dollars each year in tax revenue (U.S. Census, 2003). These
tax breaks they receive do not benefit the local economy; they go elsewhere. As a result of this and
other factors, the United States total spending is $22 Billion dollars each year for federal funds to
stimulate the Puerto Rican economy (Schaefer, 2010).
The unique tax benefits Puerto Rico offers to corporations to establish operations on their island are
very attractive to companies who want to increase their profits. With these tax benefits in place, Puerto

William Byrd
History 250 Byrd Diary Paper February 19, 2008 The Worldview of William Byrd II of Westover
Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of a person is their private life. I know that I do different things
when I am alone or with close friends, which leads many of us to wonder what William Byrd, a
wealthy Virginia planter, did in both his social and private sides of life, as well as what prompted him
to write the various statements in his diary. At first glance, William Byrd II gave me the impression of
a spoiled, rich boy who feels he can do as he pleases. In reality, he did do what he pleased since he
was a major Virginia planter and owner of many slaves. His hard work consisted of writing letters to
England or talking to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is evident when his wife Lucy makes an entrance when she should not or performs some sort of
disobedient act towards William, which results in him appearing less of a man to his male company.
Lucy probably recognized this and continued to embarrass William whenever she was not getting the
attention she deserved, or when she had simply had enough of William and his commanding mode of
behavior. William gives as much attention to his children as he does to Lucy; little to none. I have
come to see his journal entries as highlights of his day. Lucy is in a few of his entries, but mainly
because they were having an argument and it stayed with William all day. As for his children, well
unless they are sick or wet the bed, then they never do anything worthy to William. Besides the fact
that he ignores his family, what else could he have been doing all day that he did not write about? For
example, maybe there was some activity or routine, but because it did not strike him as important, he
did not write about it. He does routinely write about what he ate for breakfast and the time he woke
up, but other than that, it is whatever he found important that day, which for the most part is not
interesting to me at all. Although Byrd is pictured as a well built man, I see him as a larger, pudgier

Whole Foods has already bought its largest competitor, Wild Oats, which has shown to be profitable.
By promoting organic foods Whole Foods can increase sales and attract new customers by introducing
them to the Whole Foods experience. Whole Foods would benefit not only by promoting itself but the
industry in general. In addition to promoting organic foods, they could enhance their brand image and
loyalty by continuing their community service efforts. If the industry continues to grow and they
continue to bring about brand awareness and loyalty, Whole Foods could strengthen its market share
and profitability. The key threats that Whole Foods faces include: local grocers increasing their
organic food options, the size of Whole Foods stores deterring customers, and the price of organic
foods. Local grocers could potentially take away from Whole Foods sales by stealing the customers
that want to get in and get out. If customers can get the organic foods they want at a smaller grocery
store, some customers may switch to them. This is where the size of Whole Foods stores becomes a
threat to themselves. If they continue to buy and build large stores they could potentially deter some of
their consumers to the smaller grocers in the area. Also what is a threat now is the high price of
organic foods. Consumers must pay a premium for these items because they cost more to produce.
Whole Foods must keep the customers

Crime in this country is an everyday thing. Some people believe that crime is unnecessary. That

Their inadequacies are, however, themselves reflections of economic and related social circumstances
that determine opportunities, influence motives, help shape attitudes, and fix the daily prospects for
health and well being. A person may experience internal conflict in trying to decide which set of
values, attitudes, and codes of behavior to accept and internalize. For example, to a kid living in a
neighborhood that has many criminal types, these people may be symbols of economic and social
success because they have money, expensive clothes, fancy cars, and other material possessions that
inspire respect and jealousy. The kids may draw to the criminal life style of these people because they
want the same symbols of success for themselves. At the same time, several youths in the
neighborhood may have good relationships with parents or other adults who are noncriminal in their
life styles and who try to instill non delinquent values in them. A young person exposed to both types
of influences must balance out their merits and decide whether to accept the values of one set of
associates or those of the other. Between 1990 and 2002 there were 13,504 males and 3,168 females

Being Ernest Satire
In The Importance of Being Earnest, Oscar Wilde satirizes people in the Victorian Era for believing
that their ideal romantic fantasies are pragmatic and attainable in reality. The play s utilization of
comedy of manners, through satire, aims criticism at the higher classes of society. Wilde shows that
even though upper class citizens have a lavish lifestyle it does not mean that they can also obtain a
romance that is as equally extravagant. Wilde s usage of comedic tools, such as hyperboles and ironic
concepts, emphasizes how people s expectations and high standards can often jumble, as well as lead
them astray, from the actuality of romance and how it is flawed rather than flawless, and that no one

Here, Wilde conveys that Gwendolen is determined to marry a man named Ernest because she not
only considers it a divine name but also a charming name. Gwendolen is head over heels for name
Ernest that if it were any other name she would not show any interest. A similar instance occurs later
on in the play when Algernon, who, at the time, is going by the name Ernest, proposes to Cecily and
Cecily says, ... it had always been a girlish dream of mine to love some one whose name was Ernest
(Wilde Page 33). Both Gwendolen and Cecily s preference for the name Ernest is an example of how
Wilde pokes fun at how females are obsessed with style, appearance and all things aesthetic. Their
preference for the name Ernest reveals that Gwendolen and Cecily already have a premeditated idea of
what name they would like their future spouse to have, completely overlooking the reality of how
being narrow minded can inhibit one s options in finding romance in the first place. Moreover, Wilde
displays that women are picky and tend to go overboard and exaggerate due to the fact that they want
to have control over every aspect of their love

History Of Subway Graffiti Art Essay
The history of the underground art movement known by many names, most commonly graffiti begins
in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania during the mid to late 60 s, and started with bombing. The writers who
are credited with the first effort are CORNBREAD and COOL EARL. They wrote their names all over
the city gaining attention from the community and the local press. Then the movement made way to
New York City where the teenagers would write graffiti on the subways. It is unclear whether this
concept made way to New York City on purpose or if it was an accident. Shortly after the

birth to new writers. In 1971 The New York Times published an article on one of ... Show more

Writers enhanced their tags with stars and other designs. Some designs were for visual purpose while
others had meaning. For instance crowns were used by writers proclaiming themselves as king. The
next development was scale. Writers started to make their tags to a larger scale. The standard nozzle
width of a spray paint can is narrow so these larger tags while drawing more attention than a standard
tag did not have much visual weight. Writers began to increase the thickness of the letters and would
also outline them with an additional color. Writers discovered that caps from other aerosol products
could provide them with a larger width of spray. This led to the development of the masterpiece. It is
difficult to say who did the first masterpiece, but is commonly credited to SUPER KOOL 223 of the
Bronx and WAP of Brooklyn. The thicker letters provided the opportunity to enhance the name.
Writers decorated the interior of the letters with what were termed designs. First with simple polka
dots and later with stars. Designs were limited to the writer s imagination. Writers eventually started to
make the masterpieces the entire height of the subway car. These masterpieces were termed top to
bottoms. The addition color design and scale were advancements but still strongly resembled the tags
on what they were based. The competitive atmosphere led to the development of actual styles, which
would depart from the tag styled

Contributions Of Harriet Tubman
Every once in awhile, magazines or websites will post a list of the most influential people of all time.
This is similar to TIME Magazine s list of the 100 most influential people in the world each year
(Gibbs, 2017). While looking at the different opinions of the most influential people, it was surprising
to see that Harriet Tubman was not included on Business Insider, Biography Online, or TIME s list
(Garfield, 2016; Hart, 1978; Skiena Ward, 2013). Harriet Tubman was a very influential woman who
impacted the lives of many people. She was born into slavery in Maryland and was originally named
Araminta Harriet Ross after her mother Harriet Green and her father Ben Ross (Biography, 2017).
Harriet escaped slavery and gained her freedom in Pennsylvania in the year 1849 (Biography, 2017).
Eventually she went back to Maryland and helped hundreds of slaves escape to their freedom through
the network of the Underground Railroad (Biography, 2017). She was then given the nickname Moses

Sea Buckthorn Essay
Interactions Although the use of sea buckthorn has no established interactions as a food form,
suppository, or with topical application, it is possible that unknown interactions exist. When taken
internally as an oil or oil capsule, interactions with sea buckthorn have been noted. These interactions
have been observed with certain herbs and dietary supplements, drugs, and some diseases or
conditions.
Interactions with Herbs and Dietary Supplements Sea buckthorn oil can decrease platelet aggregation.
Use of sea buckthorn with other herbs that effect platelet aggregation can increase the risk of bleeding.
Identified herbs and supplements include angelica, clove, danshen, feverfew, fish oil, garlic, ginger,

Interactions with Drugs When taken with aspirin, anticoagulants (Warfarin, Heparin, Lovenox),
antiplatelet drugs (Plavix), and NSAIDS (Ibuprofen, Motrin, Advil, Naprosyn, Aleve), the additive
effects of sea buckthorn demonstrates a moderately high risk for bleeding. Additionally, the use of sea
buckthorn combined with antihypertensive drugs such as Capoten, Vasotec, Cozaar, Cardizem, and
Lasix may increase the effect of these drugs, dangerously lowering blood pressure. Extreme caution
should be exercised with concomitant use of either combination and a physician should be consulted.
Individuals taking drugs for diabetes by mouth or insulin, should exercise caution when using sea
buckthorn. Sea buckthorn is known to lower blood sugar levels and medication adjustments may be
necessary. Sea buckthorn oil should also be used cautiously with antiulcer medications due to possible
additive effects. Furthermore, it may significantly reduce the effect of immunosuppressant drugs and
antibiotics. Sea buckthorn may also prove an additive effect on chemotherapy drugs based on
concomitant use.

The Hr Scorecard
The HR Scorecard: Linking People, Strategy, and Performance by Dave Ulrich
This Book Is Rapidly Becoming An Industry Best Practice Framework
Providing the tools and systems required for leading a measurement managed HR architecture, this
important book heralds the emergence of human resources as a strategic powerhouse in todays
organizations. Three experts in the field outline a powerful measurement system that highlights the
indisputable role HR can play as both a prime source of sustainable competitive advantage and a key
driver of value creation. They draw from an ongoing study of nearly 3,000 firms to outline a seven
step process they call an HR Scorecard, specifically designed to embed human resources systems
within a firms ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This presents an interesting dilemma: The asset which is most important is the least understood, least
prone to measurement, and, hence least susceptible to management. He goes on to commend the co
authors of The HR Scorecard for three specific contributions: their development of causal models
which illustrate the relationship of HR value drivers with business outcomes and thereby take the
Balanced Scorecard to the next level of sophistication; their research on the drivers of
highperformance organizations to provide a framework to decision makers with which to formulate
and implement strategies for human capital growth; and finally, their insights into the competencies
required by HR professionals, competencies which can enabler an organization to deliver on the
promise of its measurement system. In essence, the co authors of The HR Scorecard identify and
explain linkages indeed the interdependence between and among people, strategy, and performance.
Only by understanding these linkages and their independence can decision makers in any organization
(regardless of size or nature) accurately measure the nature, value, and impact of human capital on the
bottom line. Moreover, decision makers can then make much more accurate measurement of each

The Absent Rainbow in Silicon Valley
Minorities in America are the fastest growing consumers of technology, ranging from smartphones to
social media, But not only are the absent from having any input on how these products are being
created and developed, it is even more difficult to gain entry into. At the heart of the question is how
to develop tech communities of people who don t just consume media, but who create it and can then
use it to solve problems in their communities. While it is apparent that the population of minorities in
Silicon Valley is low, it is difficult to uncover the explanations for these depressing demographics.
There are two categories of intersecting obstacles for minorities wanting to get a foothold in the
technology markets. There is a deficiency in access to technology and computer science educational
programs, and there is a lack of venture capital available to minorities. These two factors create a
deficit of collective capital required for potential minority entrepreneurs to broker deals for
investments.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) shows that out of the 600,000 people working as computer and
information technology managers, 27 percent are female, 5 percent are African American and 5
percent are Latino. Although 15 percent of the American labor market is Latino and 11 percent is
African American, only 6 percent of Latinos and seven percent of African Americans employed in
America are involved in computer and mathematical jobs and occupations. These numbers illustrate

Argumentative Essay On Interracial Marriage
Interracial marriage: is the term used to describe marriages that take place between people who are
from different racial or ethnic groups
Some might argue that interracial marriages are corruptions of culture. In the ruling of Loving V
Virginia the judge of the Circuit Court of Caroline County stated his opinion at the court, Almighty
God created the races white, black, yellow, Malay and red, and he placed them on separate continents.
And but for the interference with his arrangements there would be no cause for such marriages. The
fact that he separated the faces shows that he did not intent for the races to mix. However, I believe we
are all created equally therefore have every right to choose who you want to marry, have kids with and
spend the rest of your life with. In our society people believe that the idea of interracial marriages is
calamitous. People can find it strenuous to live with different cultures who have many different
preferences. If we look deeper into this controversy issue, the only reason is a different outlook on life.
And no matter what race people are, because if they truly love each other, they will have one
compromising outlook.
Therefore, interracial marriage should never have been prohibited for these reasons. Firstly, the
constitutional rights of interracial couples were violated. Secondly, love between adults should
regulated by the government or criminalized. Finally, human rights should take precedence over
cultural laws

Data on Fixed Lines vs Cellular Essay examples
In this paper I will go over the pros and cons of having a purely fixed line network vs. a purely
cellular network. When making this decision there are several things to consider, the most important is
what this network is going to be used for. I am going to first go over the fixed line network then
follow up with the cellular network. At the end of this paper I will do a recommendation to a new
company that wants to open up a Skype style service as to whether they should use a fixed line or a
cellular network. Fixed line telephones was the main form of communication in 1877 and this was the
case up to the time when cellular phone came into the world. Fixed lines are in every home and
building today so everyone has the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Network security is very important on any network with a DSL connection on a fixed line there is no
change in the network security. Network security would be handled by a firewall that would be
handled by the modem and of course at the device itself. Then the subscriber or company would
themselves use additional software for further protection. Troubleshooting is handled by both the
subscriber and Telephone Company. There is a way to determine where one ends and the other begins
this is known as the demarcation line. This is usually where the wiring enters the home or building.
But this really depends on if this is a single occupant property or a multiple occupant property. The
failover solution when using a fixed line service for Internet connection would be to have back up
equipment available for the site and for the Telephone Company it would be good to know at the
central office there is additional servers just in case there is a malfunction. When it comes to the data
itself it is always important to have a backup ran on a daily or weekly basis depending on the
importance of the data. When Cellular phones first came out the main use was to make phone calls.
The first generation of the cell phone transmitted information the same analog format as a fixed line.
The second generation (2G) transmission switched to digital which gave cell phones the ability to
transmit and receive voice and data. When

Compare And Contrast Samuel Hunt And Margaret Atwood
Samuel Hunt: Both Doris Lessing s On Not Winning a Nobel Prize (2007) and Margaret Atwood s
Spotty Handed Villainesses (1994) are speeches which demonstrate a great strength of textual
integrity, achieved through the speakers personal styles of presentation and the relevance of the issues
at hand, holding value beyond the contextual audience and towards a modern responder. The enduring
value of any speech is the ability to persuade with conviction, utilising both the arousal of the
audience s emotions to address topics of significance and the qualities of an effective rhetorician.
While Lessing s speech is directed at the issue of world poverty with a focus of education, Atwood s
speech draws attention to gender inequality throughout literature. ... Show more content on

Lessing addresses that it is crucial that both are aware of this divide and make an effort to bridge the
gap despite the condition not necessarily either ones fault. The motif of a doorway is mentioned in
Lessing s speech, as a means of metaphorically demonstrating a barrier to education that can only be
unlocked for both cultures by bridging the divide between poverty and privilege. Whilst stressing the
point of education being needed for the underprivileged, Lessing also points out that the advantaged
world needs to be more educated too, acknowledging that reading, books, used to part of a general
education. This forces the audience to think about their self absorbed society that is unaware of the
extended global community. This feature in Lessing s speech contributes to the textual integrity as it
provides a meaning and value that is still relevant, acknowledging that it is the nature of human beings
to be caught up in their own world, but encouraging change within these people, as these starving
people may yet define us. Lessing s unconventional style of speech does not build up to make a point;
however makes this point very early ironically and with acerbic wit this is because of her already

Essentially, cystic fibrosis causes a lot of sticky mucus buildup in many organs, including the
pancreas, lungs, and other organs. One interesting fact about Cystic Fibrosis has to do with its
epidemiology, interestingly enough, the distribution and prevalence of cystic fibrosis does depend on
race; white people have a higher chance of being born with Cystic fibrosis, this is believed to be
because the emergence of cystic fibrosis began in the stone age in Europe (Daniel, Emanuela, Genel
Lucia, 2015). Since cystic fibrosis is a recessive autosomal disease, a person affected inherits two
mutated genes from each parent as opposed to a single gene. Cystic Fibrosis is caused specifically in
the CFTR (cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator) gene , within this gene the most
common mutation is the deletion of phenylalanine at codon 508, this is the most common mutation
within the 1600 known possible mutations for cystic fibrosis (Alton, Bush, Davies, 2007). The ideal
path to diagnose cystic fibrosis is through measuring sweat electrolyte levels, doctors measure the
sweat levels and then check to see if the levels are abnormally high, as with Cystic fibrosis patients
there is a high concentration of chloride and sodium (Alton, Bush, Davies, 2007). After diagnosis, the

Research Paper On Brazil Funerals
Brazilian funerals are held very differently than the average American funeral. Their traditions
stemmed from not only their beliefs but also their living environment, as Brazil is very hot and
demands a fast burial. Within forty eight hours of death, and not a moment longer, a memorial service
will most likely take place in a location called a velorios, a place where a private or public gathering
can take place to mourn the dead. Unlike an average American funeral, food or a long period of
waiting does not take place. A funeral for the Brazilians is very personal and intimate; kissing and
hugging the dead is usually involved along with crying and loud mourning for the deceased. The main

Difference Between Semiotic Analysis And Ethnography

they contribute to the existing cultural production. Qualitative research is one of the kinds of research

Sex Workers And The Rights Of Human Trafficking And Human...
When you hear about human trafficking, most people do not think about it going on their own
backyard. At the same time, there is the occasional news story about prostitution, in one way or
another. Although the deeper problems underlying the two topics are rarely spoken about in a public
forum, the relationship between the two are incredibly important in the protection of trafficking
victims and the preservation of rights of legitimate sex workers. The sex workers rights movement is
important in understanding the position sex workers have as workers and members of a community
tainted by illegal trafficking. Human sex trafficking is the movement of people, by force, into the sex
trade, or other forced labor. Yes, sex workers should have their profession considered as a legitimate
sector. Yes, human sex trafficking should be stopped. While both of those things are true it is
important to consider all aspects of both to form a movement directed at the two, rather than focus on
strictly one or the other. A movement that is geared towards creating an even ground between the
rights of individuals to use their sexuality to make an honest living, and the protection of individuals
from the exploitation of that very same sexuality, is pivotal in the continuation of protecting human
rights across the globe. By examining how several, very different, countries deal with sex work and
human trafficking, we can attempt to understand how we can move forward with a new more complex

A Society Fighting for Social Change Essay
The proletarians have nothing to lose but their chains. They have a world to win (Marx). While living
in London as an adult Karl Marx realized that he was living in a very rich country but only small
portion of the people were benefiting from the riches of the country and the larger portion was
suffering from poverty. The people that were enjoying the riches of the country he referred to as
capitalists, these people seek profit from the factories and businesses that the owned. Then there were
the people he considered as proletarians, these people sold their labor for wages to the capitalist. Marx

Marx broke down alienation into four different categories, Alienation from the act of working,
Alienation from the products of work, Alienation from the workers and Alienation from human
potential. Marx believed that the only way things could start to change was if the proletarians started
to demonstrate conflict. Proletarians needed to say what it was that they needed and wanted so that
their capitalist could have been aware of what they were interested in, what they wanted and needed in
order for them to survive and what they needed in the organization while working for them to be
comfortable, this was the only way that changes would have be able to come about. It was not
guarantee that with each and every conflict change would have occurred. Also, not at the first sight of
conflict there would have been change. The proletarians needed to be ready to have kept the conflicts
reoccurring and consistent in order for changes to come about because the capitalist would not create
change at the first sight of conflict because they believed that the way things were going at that time
were the best possible options available and they were no need for change. The capitalist were okay
with having the proletarians on very low wages in order for them to get the most profits out of the

challenge for both, says Callanan as a new party has never gained a majority. He paused. But Macron
has a better chance than Le Pen.
One important issue that the new president will need to address is on the national security, as terrorist
attacks are at their peek right now in France. While Le Pen is focused on immigration, Macron is
focused on adding 50,000 police and specialised training. When asked who will appeal more to the
public, Callanan said people become more accustomed to these events and the shock effect is
mitigated. Think of what it is like living in Beirut...
Will Le Pen s claim of deporting all foreigners suspected of a connection to radical Islamism make
France safer? Definitely not, replied Mr. Callanan, on the contrary, the anti immigration and anti Islam
stance can be taken too far and be counter productive.
Le Pen has said that France should be less naive as it became a jihadi university. Will her presidency
affect the relations with the Middle East? Which key policies should France pursue in the Middle

Minimum Legal Drinking Age Analysis
The age of 21 is the appropriate age to allow the consumption of alcohol in the United States.
Moreover, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced that in 2010,
552 lives were saved by the minimum legal drinking age (Voas, 2013, p. 1601). But traffic safety is
not the only concern, if lowering the minimum legal drinking age, health and behavior issues will also
be of concern. The possible consequences of lowering the minimum legal drinking age to 18 may
include an increase on the number of deaths caused by alcohol related accidents, high schoolers
underage drinking problem, and alcohol related sexual assaults. Therefore, I do not support the
lowering of the minimum legal drinking age to 18.
According to Wechsler and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Since alcohol appears to enhance interest in sex, (Hart Ksir, 2015, p. 221) young people drink and
could engage in sexual risky behavior such as having unprotected sex or casual sex with multiple
partners. A consequence of unprotected sex could be an unwanted pregnancy or a sexual transmitted
disease. Many studies have found that drinking alcohol at the time of the offense have been reported
on more than one third of all rapes and sexual assaults (Hart Ksir, 2015). Alcohol impairs the thoughts
and places the young adult drinking illegally at risk of sexual assault. The alcohol use increases the
chance for sexual assault including rape.
I am in favor of the minimum legal drinking age to remain 21 as it is working keeping the alcohol out
of the hands of teens. The minimum legal drinking age law prevents alcohol related fatalities, high
schoolers underage drinking problem, and alcohol related sexual assaults. The effects of the alcohol
are already detriment and its consumption by those younger than 21 will create safety, health and
behavioral challenges, so the age control strategy should not be

The Taxi Driver By Thomas L. Friedman
Hey everybody, Due to your positive responses to my last blog post regarding modern technology I m
going to share some more thoughts on this topic with you today. To begin with, moden technology
both unites and divides us, according to Thomas L. Friedman, whose article The Taxi Driver clearly
represents the effects of today s electronical devices on our lives. Sometimes even though we are
physically close to a person, it often feels like there is a great distance because of distractions caused
by devices such as smartphones, iPods, laptops, etc. Therefore, we often miss the chance to get to
know foreign or extraordinary personalities, as Friedman for instance relates in his article. In general,
I share Friedman s point and approve of the

  • 2. Malaria Is A Disease That Affects The World s Poorest CUNY Nobel Science Challenge Malaria is a disease that affects nearly 600 million people and causes more than a million deaths a year, the most coming from children under five. This disease is regularly found in more than 100 countries around the world and affects 40% of the world s population. It is most commonly transmitted by an infected Anopheles mosquito. The most deadly form of malaria is known as Plasmodium falciparum because almost all deaths from malaria are caused by this specific one. Some of the symptoms that are affiliated with this strand of malaria are the destruction of red blood cells along with complications with the kidneys, lungs, and brain. In more serious cases, it can cause permanent neurological effects and even death. As the Nobel Assembly said at the announcement of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, Diseases caused by parasites have plagued humankind for a millennium and constitute a major global health problem. In particular, parasitic diseases affect the world s poorest populations and represent a huge barrier to improving human health and wellbeing . Youyou Tu, one of the winners of the prize, discovered Artemisinin, a drug that has significantly reduced the mortality rates for patients suffering from malaria by killing the malaria parasites an early stage of their development. In my day, New York was fairly new but quickly gaining quite a reputation. MBW: New York City is a critical location in the history of the United States as well as in the world. I was born there quite early in the 20th century, which was an important century for America and New York was definitely a part of the national, group, and individual identity transformation taking place. I was a girl during the first great War and a young woman when the Great Depression hit. I could see the transformation of culture, of the world, of the country, and of women happening before me. My interest in photography and photojournalism helped me communicate, express, and capture such changes. Certainly, I am keen to understand your experiences as a writer in Europe. • 4. Local Adaptation of Plants Essay In this study, the effect of introducing non local plant material into a certain environment for restoration purposes was investigated. Several studies already showed that plants exhibit local adaptation to their sympatric environment (Howe et al., 2003; Savolainen et al., 2007; Leimu and Fischer, 2008; Salmela, 2014). We hypothesized that if A. arenaria shows evidence of local adaptation, we expect the plants of the experimental site, and closely related ones, to have a greater performance than allopatric populations (Vander Mijnsbrugge et al., 2010). Results indicated an increase in survival with increasing distance from the study site in the first phase of the experiment. In the second phase, the relation between survival and distance ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, we did not see an effect of the origin of the plants on the condition, so we cannot completely confirm this theory. Also, since the relation between the distance and survival was positive, we cannot say we confirmed the theory of local adaptation. In our analysis, we used geographic distance as a measure for the differentiation between the various populations. In most cases, environmental distance is the best way to study population divergence ( Joshi et al., 2001; Bischoff et al., 2006; Leimu and Fischer, 2008; Bischoff and Tremulot, 2011). This implies that populations that are close to each other but very dissimilar can differ a lot more from each other than populations that are more distant but more similar (Bischoff et al., 2006). In Leimu and Fisher (2008) they stated that geographical distance is only a good measure if it is correlated with environmental distance, where the latter can be an important selective agent for local adaptation. By this, the results could be different with the use of the environmental distance. Also, the experimental plants were in the field during autumn and winter, implying that aboveground herbivores were largely absent. It is demonstrated that also aboveground herbivores can act as selective forces in plant populations, since these herbivores can have strong negative effects on the plant fitness (Jarosz and Davelos, 1995; Abdala Roberts and Marquis, 2007; Arany et al., 2009). It was a way of passing knowledge from one mind to the next. A man named Horance Mann created a coalition of professional teachers in 1837. This group of teachers was modeled after the Prussian idea of common schooling , or the notion that all of populace deserved the availability and value of education, no matter level of proficiency or skin color. Age grading was an idea that Mann had inquired during his time in Prussia. This idea was originally put into effect in Massachusetts during 1848. Age grading was the design of appointing students by age and placing them into different grades. • 8. Cultural Influences Cultural Influences You enter another country and notice many odd, unique things you ve never seen or interacted with before. In this world, there are many cultures that express themselves differently. We re all born and raised differently from each other . Each culture may do things that contradict with what we know, but it s how each culture was brought up. It is clear when considering an individual s education, family, environment, and race that culture is always a huge impact on how someone views the world. Education is one cultural influence that makes people view the world in different perspectives. One text that can relate to this is in An Indian Father s Plea quoting, So I realize he may be slow in grasping the methods and tools that you are now using in your classroom, ones quite familiar to his white peers, but I hope you will be patient with him. It takes time to adjust to a new cultural system and learn new things (Lake 77). The son here was educated differently than his classmates. This caused the teacher to believe he is slow in learning because he wasn t taught the way they teached. Another text is by Everyday Use stating, She washed us in a river of make believe, burned us with a lot of knowledge we didn t necessarily need to know (Walker 60). The daughter tries to teach her family things that they don t deem is Aguilar, Manzano, Rugerio, Schott, Zamora 2 necessary or important because it isn t useful for them in their daily lives. In the end, education is a major factor in how individuals scope the world. Family is one of the most influential part of someone s perspective on the world s culture. Family influences their point of view on how they are raised and also how families develop their traditions, hobbies, and beliefs. For example in In Indian Father s Plea the father said, If you were to ask him how many months are there in a year, he would probably tell you 13; he has been taught by our traditional people that there are 13 full moons in a year according to the native tribal calendar (Lake 78). Production of oil in the land of Israel/Palestine created a need for storing the finished products. Huge pottery operations emerged in order to infiltrate foreign markets all over the Mediterranean basin with beautiful Greek artistry (Oxford Handbook of Engineering, Ceramic Production ). A Lekythos in the Ancient World A lekythos (plural: lekythoi) is a container for oil, ointments, and were sometimes used as offerings for the dead (Folsom, Handbook of Greek Pottery, 175). How did this object come to be? A potter must start with an idea. The shape of the object was good for the careful pouring required when dealing with oil. In starting to fashion this idea, the potter first must grab a large ball of clay and lift up the edges to make the body. Next, the potter places the clay on a pottery wheel and, using various tools, the potter is able to scrape the base and other areas in order to add ridges. The neck is created through a small ball of clay that s then ripped apart to form a hollow neck and mouth at the top. The potter will flatten the rim and turn the neck to get rid of excess clay. Next, the potter will attach the neck to an open hole on top of t the body. He will then use a sort of place holder in order to make sure it is applied straight on. Lastly, the handle will be added. Mark Twain Benaras, Kashi or Varanasi, whatever it may be called, this city has been enthralling people from far and wide, since ages. The spirituality and mysticism of Varanasi, epitomizes everything Indian in a different and better way than many other cities. Though it is considered as one of the oldest living cities of the world, yet it presents an incomparable blend of tradition and modernism existing side by side. With the majestic Ghats on the banks of the Mokshdayini Ganga, the temples, the narrow by lanes, the art, culture, food and the people; Varanasi keeps unfolding itself like a maze ,which is what attracts the world to Varanasi. With the aim to take the city along the path of growth, development and to showcase to the world that Varanasi is much more than temples and ghats, I spent three weeks in Varanasi as a district attachment program. The opportunities which are available to every unemployed worker in the United States are training programs, health insurance assistance, and food and emergency aid. With these programs available to the unemployed in the United States, it is helping put America back to work, and giving people the opportunity to go back school to be retrained in a new field of work which they didn t have the chance to do in the past. Since Puerto Rico isn t a state they don t have these programs that assist the unemployed to help them get back to work, in turn it s causing a big problem for their economy. The biggest problem for Puerto Rico s economy is the tax incentives for big corporations that establish operations in Puerto Rico. One of the advantages for a corporation to operate in Puerto Rico is that they can claim their profits and wages paid up to 60 percent for tax credits, in which does cost the United States and Puerto Rico billions of dollars each year in tax revenue (U.S. Census, 2003). These tax breaks they receive do not benefit the local economy; they go elsewhere. As a result of this and other factors, the United States total spending is $22 Billion dollars each year for federal funds to stimulate the Puerto Rican economy (Schaefer, 2010). I know that I do different things when I am alone or with close friends, which leads many of us to wonder what William Byrd, a wealthy Virginia planter, did in both his social and private sides of life, as well as what prompted him to write the various statements in his diary. At first glance, William Byrd II gave me the impression of a spoiled, rich boy who feels he can do as he pleases. Being Ernest Satire In The Importance of Being Earnest, Oscar Wilde satirizes people in the Victorian Era for believing that their ideal romantic fantasies are pragmatic and attainable in reality. The play s utilization of comedy of manners, through satire, aims criticism at the higher classes of society. Wilde shows that even though upper class citizens have a lavish lifestyle it does not mean that they can also obtain a romance that is as equally extravagant. Both Gwendolen and Cecily s preference for the name Ernest is an example of how Wilde pokes fun at how females are obsessed with style, appearance and all things aesthetic. Their preference for the name Ernest reveals that Gwendolen and Cecily already have a premeditated idea of what name they would like their future spouse to have, completely overlooking the reality of how being narrow minded can inhibit one s options in finding romance in the first place. Essentially, cystic fibrosis causes a lot of sticky mucus buildup in many organs, including the pancreas, lungs, and other organs. One interesting fact about Cystic Fibrosis has to do with its epidemiology, interestingly enough, the distribution and prevalence of cystic fibrosis does depend on race; white people have a higher chance of being born with Cystic fibrosis, this is believed to be because the emergence of cystic fibrosis began in the stone age in Europe (Daniel, Emanuela, Genel Lucia, 2015). Since cystic fibrosis is a recessive autosomal disease, a person affected inherits two mutated genes from each parent as opposed to a single gene. Cystic Fibrosis is caused specifically in the CFTR (cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator) gene , within this gene the most common mutation is the deletion of phenylalanine at codon 508, this is the most common mutation within the 1600 known possible mutations for cystic fibrosis (Alton, Bush, Davies, 2007). The ideal path to diagnose cystic fibrosis is through measuring sweat electrolyte levels, doctors measure the sweat levels and then check to see if the levels are abnormally high, as with Cystic fibrosis patients there is a high concentration of chloride and sodium (Alton, Bush, Davies, 2007). Their traditions stemmed from not only their beliefs but also their living environment, as Brazil is very hot and demands a fast burial. Within forty eight hours of death, and not a moment longer, a memorial service will most likely take place in a location called a velorios, a place where a private or public gathering can take place to mourn the dead. At the same time, there is the occasional news story about prostitution, in one way or another. Although the deeper problems underlying the two topics are rarely spoken about in a public forum, the relationship between the two are incredibly important in the protection of trafficking victims and the preservation of rights of legitimate sex workers. The sex workers rights movement is important in understanding the position sex workers have as workers and members of a community tainted by illegal trafficking. Human sex trafficking is the movement of people, by force, into the sex trade, or other forced labor. Yes, sex workers should have their profession considered as a legitimate sector. Yes, human sex trafficking should be stopped. While both of those things are true it is important to consider all aspects of both to form a movement directed at the two, rather than focus on strictly one or the other. A movement that is geared towards creating an even ground between the rights of individuals to use their sexuality to make an honest living, and the protection of individuals from the exploitation of that very same sexuality, is pivotal in the continuation of protecting human rights across the globe.
