Papua New Guinea, much of the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Fiji (e.g. Abbott, 1995; Kroenke,
1984; Musgrave, 1990; Petterson et al., 1999). Since the time of arc formation, however, these
terranes have undergone complex tectonic reorganizations within the southwest Pacific by multiple
episodes of arc/forearc collision, subduction cessation and subsequent subduction polarity reversal to
displace and reorientate the fragments of arc basement (Hall, 2002; Petterson et al., 1999; Schellart et
al., 2006).
It is well understood that New Britain was previously part of the Melanesian arc where the Pacific
plate subducted to the southwest at the Melanesian trench (Fig. 1 and 4; Petterson et al., 1999).
However, the timing for initial arc formation is poorly constrained. The main body of New Britain is
composed of typical island arc magmatic rocks of Eocene and Oligocene age (Fig. 5). The Baining
Volcanics represent the initiation of arc magmatism at the convergent plate boundary between the
Australian and Pacific plates (Lindley, 2006; Madsen and Lindley, 1994), and deposited between

recording is extremely problematic, simply due to technical issues, specifically, having unified
entrances and maintaining tempi. This comes through immediately in the first movement. The first
entrance after the trumpet solo (m. 13) sounds almost as if the brass are playing a grace note to the
cymbal crash. This is detrimental to the power of that chord. Immediately after that, the beat 4 pick
ups are a mess. In comparison, in Gergiev s recording those opening chords are riveting, and with the
intensity of the unified beat 4 pick ups, the audience almost can t help but be glued to their seats in the
presence of the overbearing orchestral sound this movement calls for. Pick ups continue to be a
problem for Eschenbach throughout the first 3 movements. This results in an uninteresting
performance of the 1st and 3rd movements because much of the character is lost. However,

In a society that is presided over by unjust authority, there will always be that one person who makes
it out. The one who decides to change the way him and his neighbors live in the eye of the community.
There are those who push themselves to their limits but still do not achieve fully, yet in a way they are
just a catalyst for the movement, they are the ones adding the next step on the ladder for the person
below them. In 1984 they had Winston Smith, Things Fall Apart they had Okonkwo, and in The Road
they had the father. All characters in each novel were conquering not a quest set upon them, but a
quest they had set upon themselves. They felt like they had what it took to push past their own
limitations and break through the societal restrictions placed on them. In each novel the hero had a
quest in which they followed for the betterment of their lives and the people around them, a personal

The road is a symbol of their journey and keeping sane in the midst of the chaos the world is in. While
the little boy is still young and is incapable of contributing, the father has his own quest to survive
while safekeeping the boy and providing for him as much as possible. The father s wife doubted his
motive to helping his son survive through everything but he wanted to prove the mother wrong, he
wanted her to see that he would do whatever he could to make sure the boy stayed alive. The father
also felt the boy was given to him by god, and it was his duty to protect him. He mistrusted all of that.
He said the right dreams for a man in peril were dreams of peril and all else was the call of languor

Figurative Language In Alice In Wonderland
An author frequently exemplifies different messages and conflict within a story or novel. More often
or not, an author portrays certain types of literary devices to convey a message between the setting and
characters. In Lewis Carroll s novel, Alice in Wonderland, Alice s curiosity and innocence as a child in
the Victorian Era leads to her exploring another world called Wonderland. She is challenged to find
the true meaning of exploring outside of an ordinary world which leads her to question her own
identity. The depths of wonderland and many influences Alice stumbles across changes the dynamics

Carroll uses the food and drinks as a way of representing Alice s curious appetite for growing up in
her societal role. As she wanders around Wonderland, her curiosity often leads to her eating or
drinking an object in order to satisfy her curiosity. When she drinks the Drink Me substance she says,
Curiouser and curiouser! Cried Alice she was so much surprised, that for the moment she quite forgot
how to speak good English (Carroll 6). Many times throughout the novel, Alice adventures revolve
around food and drinks such as sweet baked snacks, potions and tea to appease her curiosity. Alice
begins to lose control of her eating and drinking habits of Wonderland which demonstrates her
maturity as she looks towards adulthood in the reality world. The more food and drinks Alice applies
to herself, Carroll establishes the metaphor of growing up results in unpredictable events and changes
that are irreversible. Alice stumbles across the Cheshire Cat who portrays the opposite of growing up
as he believes taking short cuts are better than asking for advice. The Chesire cat exclaims to Alice,
Then it doesn t matter which way you go (Carroll 49). The metaphor from the Cheshire Cat resulted
from Alice asking about visiting the Mad Hatter. In this case, The Cheshire Cat is a representation of
taking the easy route and not visiting the mad hatter,
