Review Of Crime And Punishment
In Crime and Punishment, Raskolnikov is depicted as crushed by poverty, but the anxieties of his
position had of late ceased to weigh upon him (Dostoyevsky 3). During 1861, the Emancipation
Reform had recently taken place. The economy was suffering and the need for money became crucial.
The protagonist of the novel, Raskolnikov, struggles to earn money, which associates with his
behavior. Fyodor Dostoyevsky, the author of the novel, considers Raskolnikov a divided character
with different opinions. Raskolnikov displays characteristics of being delusional, self centered, and
confused, which makes his character intriguing. Throughout the course of Part One, Raskolnikov has
become delusional which contributes to his insanity. Over a course of time, he lost his ability to think
and function on a normal basis. In addition, Raskolnikov lost his ability to control himself and has
become impulsive. After the murder of the Pawnbroker and her sister, Lizaveta, Raskolnikov evolves
into paranoia. His thoughts have become irrational and erratic. Raskolnikov has a conversation with
himself where he mentions [h]e suddenly began to imagine that the old woman is still alive and might
actually come to. Abandoning keys and bureau, he ran back to the body, seized the ax and lifted it
once more over the old woman... (75). In this brief action, Raskolnikov is delusional determining
whether the Pawnbroker is dead or not. He perceives that the old woman was dead from the beginning

Main Motives For The Invasion Of Iraq
What were the main motives for the Invasion of Iraq in 2003?
This project argues that there were many more complex reasons for Tony Blair s 2003 invasion of
Iraq, other than the war on terror, the need to find weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and to free the
Iraqi people from the tyranny of Saddam Hussain as the government implied. Factors such as the vast
amounts of crude oil that the coastal areas of the Persian Gulf contains (which includes a large part of
Iraq s coast) and the need to control future oil supplies was the overall determining factor on going to
Iraq. There was also a need to stay allied with the US (which has been deeply ingrained in UK foreign
policy since the Suez Crisis of 1956) and help secure US and in turn UK military presence in the
middle east.
Methodology
Primarily, it would be imperative to establish the history of this conflict and exactly how it got to the
point of war not only from Blair s point of view but also from the other generally considered reasons,
mainly Oil and the US. Secondary sources such as Iraq between Occupations: Perspectives from 1920
to the Present (Zeidel, Baram and Rhode, 2010), Britain and the Middle East in the 9/11 Era (Hollis,
2010) and Blair s Just War: Iraq and the Illusion of Morality (Lee, 2011) are examined. There are a
few books that discuss the Anglo American relationship, the best of which are; Blair s Britain 1997
2007 (Seldon, 2007) and The Special Relationship, A Political History of Anglo American

Compare And Contrast The Kite Runner And Antigone
A moral or lesson is a message that is conveyed to be learned from a story or an event. The Kite
Runner follows the story of Amir and his childhood living in Afghanistan with his friend Hassan and
Antigone is a greek mythology play about Antigone the daughter/sister of Oedipus, the play follows
Antigone on a journey of family loyalty. Works of literature often teach the readers a social or moral
lesson, both The Kite Runner and Antigone teach a very well build lesson that affects the reader s
moral ethics. Both works of literature have similar themes throughout the storyline that changes the
reader s understanding which leads both the novel and the play to have two very different morals.
Loyalty comes in different forms and is also a major ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In The Kite Runner, the main lesson readers learn is redemption. Amir makes a mistake but in the end,
learns from it. An example of this is when Assif is beating up Amir: [Amir] What was so funny was
that, for the first time since the winter of 1975 I felt at peace. I laughed because I saw that, in some
nook in the corner of my mind, I had been looking forward to this. (Hosseini 289). This quote shows
us that while Assif is beating Amir, Amir s guilt is dieing down and he is at peace. This also shows that
Amir would do anything for Hassan and in a way he is redeeming himself for what he did to Hassan.
The moral of The Kite Runner is that no matter the sin, there is always a chance for redemption. The
themes of loyalty, sacrifice and betrayal that are present throughout this novel leads to the lesson of
redemption for Amir. In Antigone there are multiple lessons that the play teaches us, one of them is
that too much pride is going to lead to misfortune and another one is don t try to change your fate.
Both Antigone and Creon faced their misfortune for having excessive pride. The Kite Runner and
Antigone starts off with all the same themes but in the end both Amir, Hassan, Antigone and Creon
have different fate. For both Hassan and Antigone, their loyalty takes them to their graves. The lesson

Media and The Agenda Setting Theory
According to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, section 11d, the accused is to be
presumed innocent until proven guilty according to law in a fair and public hearing by an independent
and impartial tribunal (Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, 1982). Despite the right to one s
innocence preceding a fair and public trial, the indicted typically receives mass media coverage,
making the individual susceptible to the opinion s of the public. This is especially true in the case of a
renowned individual, such as a celebrity or politician. The media s coverage of the news, prior to a fair
hearing, results in public scrutiny of subjects. Media involvement generates public uproar, frequently
resulting in the condemning of the accused preceding their right to a fair trial as stated in the Canadian
Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Not only is an individual s right, according to the charter, to be
presumed innocent jeopardized by the media but also their assumed right to a private life is put into
question.
Agenda Setting Theory
Agenda Setting Theory refers to the media s ability to influence the significance of topics to the
public. Agenda setting allows for the establishment of public awareness to issues made relevant by
media. There are two assumptions underlying the agenda setting theory (McCombs Shaw, 1972).
Firstly, the media s portrayal of an event does not necessarily reflect reality; rather the media filters
and shapes the news. Secondly, the infiltration of

Recommended Organizational Policy Changes Of The European...
4. Recommended Organizational Policy Changes
According to Comscore, Europe represents 32% of overall Internet searches with Google having 80%
and Microsoft 2%. (Microsoft changes Bing s privacy policy, 2010). The biggest offenders for
malware on the internet is image and video searches on the web. Sophos reports that 92% of search
driven malware attacks is obtained from Google and Bing image searches. (Pearce, 2012). In a world
of personalized online services, establishing and maintaining user trust and responsible use of data is
critical. Users expect appropriate and relevant content and advertising while also protecting their
privacy when they use any search engine. As driven by consumer privacy concerns, the government
has asked the online industry to examine data retention and protection policies.
The Court of Justice for the European Union (CJEU) ordered that search engines are regulators of
processing personal data under the European Union Data Protection Directive, passed in May 2014.
(Abril Lipton, 2014). This order requires search engines to remove links from search results intrusive
to individual s privacy rights under this directive and is viewed as a component of the Digital Right to
be Forgotten Act. The ruling raised debate among the industry as to whom will assume responsibility
for online privacy assurance and protection. Interpretation of the law has been ambiguous, the law
doesn t uphold the right to be forgotten, but merely sustains a

Reasons For The Election Of 1860
The election of 1860 was one like no other, it was the event that lead to the succession of the eleven
states that would become to be known as the Confederate States of America, including Texas. In the
United States of America there was a lot of tension due to the different lifestyles of the North and the
South, particularly those differences between the views in slavery. As we all know, the North was a
very industrial and mechanics region, as for the South a very agricultural area that depended highly on
their existence of slaves. In the Republican Party slavery was frowned upon. This was the main and
ultimately most important reason for which the South did not want the republican candidate, Abraham
Lincoln to rise to victory. As this election

Juvenile Delinquency in the Classroom Essays
In depicting juvenile delinquency in the classroom, a few film directors portrayed novice teachers
desire to reach what the school system customarily labeled as problem students. These films illustrate
that these students are often categorized quickly and unfairly, and hopeful intervention by a few caring
and zealous teachers is enough to change their lives and attitudes for the better.
In the black and white 1955 film Blackboard Jungle, Mr. Dadier (played by Glenn Ford) was an
idealistic teacher on his first job in a tough urban mostly white male high school. The characters were
dressed in clothing of the time (jeans rolled up at the cuffs, tee shirts, bow ties, baseball caps) and the
boys wore their hair in the Elvis Presley ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dadier made a connection with Artie West, which occurred after hard work and many failed teaching
efforts. Mr. Dadier finally realized how to breathe life into his lessons so that they became meaningful
to his students. He also showed respect for them by allowing them to showcase their talents in the
Christmas program. These two strategies combined were enough to earn the respect of the classroom s
gang leader. Artie West, in turn, put the word out to the other students to work hard and behave in this
teacher s class. Other teachers shared in Mr. Dadier s success by stating that the momentum created in
Mr. Dadier s English class had carried over into their own classes. This movie had a positive outcome.
Continued hard work would be necessary for the positive change to continue. Blackboard Jungle
opened and closed with Bill Haley and the Comet s Rock Around the Clock , which helped stir quite a
ruckus so much so, the film was banned from many theatres. But the film s central point was
nevertheless clear: students who we think are aimless and recalcitrant only need the thoughtful
guidance of a concerned teacher to make learning meaningful and rewarding.
Twelve years after the release of Blackboard Jungle , Sidney Portier starred in yet another film
featuring juvenile delinquency in the classroom. To Sir With Love , filmed in 1967 a time when there
was great hostility in the

Response To Marmot s The Status Syndrome
In The Status Syndrome, Marmot argues that socioeconomic conditions lead to a hierarchical health
gradient, where mortality progressively decreases as one s socioeconomic status improves. He
illustrates this using mortality rate data about workers in the British civil service from the Whitehall
studies. The studies show that mortality in all age groups is higher for clerical workers, who earn less
and have a lower social standing, as compared to other professionals. Moreover, administrators, who
earn more than both these groups, have the lowest mortality rates, which shows a gradient in health.
Additionally, none of these workers are in poverty, and have access to medical care, which further
highlights that the health gradient is a phenomenon

The Mccarthy and the Salem Witch Hunts
The McCarthy Era of the 1950 s and the Salem Witch Trials of the 1600 s were major events in
American history that destroyed the lives and careers of many innocent victims. These tragic events
were similar in that they demonstrated how hard times lead to society s need to find a scapegoat. They
also show the shame and regret that take place after the bloodbaths occur. The parallels between these
two events, which took place almost 300 years apart, are remarkable.
However, the Salem Witchcraft Trials use of human frailty in court helped courts move forward in
eliminating its use. Courts now need factual or circumstantial evidence to convict a person of any
crime and the accused is promised a fair trial. Nowadays, the accused is given ... Show more content

By the early autumn of 1692, the cries of witchcraft began to ebb and doubts began to develop
concerning the validity of the charges. The educated elite of the colony began efforts to end the witch
hunting hysteria that had enveloped Salem. Increase Mather, the father of Cotton, published Cases of
Conscience, which argued that it were better that ten suspected witches should escape than one
innocent person should be condemned. Mather urged the court to exclude spectral evidence. A period
of atonement soon occurred in which Samuel Sewall, one of the judges, issued a public confession of
guilt and apology, and Reverend Parris admitted errors in judgment. He did, however, attempt to shift
the blame to others. Governor Phips shifted the blame to Stoughton, who became the next Governor of
Massachusetts.
However, Miller wrote The Crucible not simply as a straight historical play detailing the Salem witch
trials. Indeed, a good deal of the information in the play misrepresents the literal events of the trial:
John Proctor was not a farmer, not a tavern owner, and during the time of the trials he was sixty years
old and Abigail Williams only eleven. Rather, the play has as much significance as a product of the
early Cold War era in which Miller wrote the play. The play is a parable for the McCarthy era, in
which similar Œwitch hunts occurred targeting citizens as

Drilling Process Of Natural Gas
Natural gas is useful for multiple purposes. The gas is used everywhere including homes all around
the world, but no one questions where it comes from. Natural gas is found in the Marcellus shale
which is a rock of sediment most prominently located in northeastern America. The sedimentary rock
is thousands of feet down in the earth making it hard to obtain. Mankind was finally able to reach this
rock through a technique called fracking which is simply a kind of drilling. Once a desired location is
found, they begin the drilling process by going straight down. As the drill is proceeding downward,
lubricant and air must be pumped to aide with creating a clear, smooth path. Cement castings are put
into the hole to form the walls of the well ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When the water goes into the well not only is it mixed with chemicals, but it comes back up with other
particles, too. This wastewater can be radioactive and can be taken back to a sewage treatment that
doesn t even check for radioactivity. The sewage treatment plant should check for radioactivity, but
since some are unregulated, they don t. Some companies even take the wastewater and put it back into
the streams disposing it improperly. Drilling also causes both air and noise pollution. When drilling,
many harmful gases can be released into the air. A study was conducted around a hospital with nearby
heavy drilling and there was a twenty five percent asthma rate in young children. Drilling is around
the clock and it doesn t help that it is very noisy, too. Although the benefits are good, the
inconveniences out way the good because there is an abundance of them and there are possible
harmful long term effects that could arise in the future. There are hundreds of chemicals used to drill
into the Marcellus Shale. Some of these chemicals can be dangerous to the environment such as
hydrochloric acid. Hydrochloric acid is harmful because it is toxic to all forms of life. It is carried
through the air infecting it. This acid is a component of acid rain and can decay structures such as
building and bridges. Another chemical is naphthalene which is a surfactant. A surfactant reduces
surface tension. High levels of this

Face-Name Recall and Associative Memory
Furthermore, while numerous studies have investigated the effect of either mnemonic cues and level
of processing on associative memory, few have analyzed the additive/combined effect these memory
strategies might have on face name memory performance. A study by Yesavage, Rose, and Bower
(1983), comparing elderly participant s performance across memory strategies proven to enhance face
name associations both replicates and extends McCarty s earlier research on strategies to improve face
name associations. This experiment both replicates and extends McCarty s earlier findings of on
strategies to improve face name associations. This study evaluates the efficacy of recalling name face
associations in conditions requiring semantic judgments of the name face association and in condition
not requiring affective judgment.
Three groups of participants were tested. The image group was provided the prominent feature of the
face, a name transformation, and an image association of the face name pair. The image + judgment
group was provided identical information, but they were asked to judge the pleasantness of the image
association, and the no image group was given the prominent feature of the face, and the name
transformation, but was not taught to form an image associating the prominent facial feature with the
name transformation.
In the no image condition participants encoded faces and names as separate units. For the image
condition subjects formed visual image associations

4.2 DISCRETE COSINE TRANSFORM
DCT expresses a finite sequence of data points in terms of the sum of a cosine function oscillating at
different frequencies. DCT is Fourier related Transform similar to DFT, but using only real numbers.
It is used for image comparison in frequency domain. DCT is more robust to various image processing
technique like filtering, bluing brightness and contrast adjustment etc. although these are decrepit to
geometric attacks like rotation, scaling, cropping etc. it is used in JPEG compression.
DCTs are generally related to Fourier series coefficients of a periodically and symmetrically extended
sequence. In DCT an image can be broken down into three different frequency bands High frequency
components block (FH), Middle frequency components block (FM) and Low frequency components
block (FL). First of all image is segmented into non overlapping blocks of 8x8. Then every of those
blocks ahead DCT is implemented. After that some block selection criteria is applied and then
coefficient selection criteria is applied. y(j,k)=√(2/M) √(2/N) α_j α_k ∑_(x=0)^(M 1)▒∑_(y=0)^(N

Four persuasive arguments for why I am for the death penalty.
Not for the Death penalty.
Three arguments that are against the death penalty.
Conclusion paragraph clarifying my position and address potential arguments made against my
position.
When someone commits a Part I crime, the world is in difference on how the law enforcement and
justice systems should handle the criminals punishment. Should the criminal be put on death row or
should they spend their life rotting away in a cell? I believe, given the terrible acts that some members
of the society commit against innocent people, the death penalty must exist. For some, families,
friends, and even communities ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
First, it tends to be very hypocritical. People tend to be against the death penalty because it seems
misfitting that a nation would condemn the practice of murder by committing the same act. To some, it
seems by executing the criminal we are dishonoring the right of life by taking it. It s true, we aren t
killers and we don t want to be labeled as a killer either, but depending on the seriousness of the crime
it may be the best option to execute.
Second, prison tends to be known as Hell on Earth. Depending on the crime one has committed, they
could be in more danger staying in prison than being executed. If not executed, there is a large chance
they could either be greatly harmed or killed inside the cell. In many prison s a code of honor has been
formed that requires inmates to kill certain offenders.
Lastly, it doesn t teach the condemned anything. Most criminals are sentenced to life in prison, which
then prevents them of their freedom and from doing what they want to do. It is a punishment, and we
do it, hoping that they will learn from it. To put it simply, we cannot restore a criminal to the normality
of life by killing them

Analysis Of Lights Of A Long Night By Andre Dubus
In the essay lights of a long night Andre Dubus recalls the night he was struck by a car in many
instances. One possible reason why he continually elaborates the same night is because he is trying to
justify the loss of his legs. His wanting to help strangers did not turn out to be the samaritan gesture he
had intended it to be. One thing that I found ironic was that the car Dubus was waving at for help
caused him to lose his legs and Luis his life. Indeed, it would seem that on this event alone Dubus
actions would have proven to be fruitless despite his noble intentions of helping Luz and her brother.
In his closing he tell us undoubtedly that he is a cripple, alive , and that he is a father and husband
perhaps this is his recognition that he has more fulfilling duties to focus on rather than wallowing in
regret of his actions. Nevertheless, through this remembrance he comes to terms with his own sacrifice
and the fact that his life was forever altered. Overall, it was an enjoyable read because Dubus ends it
on a good note. Despite all the physical and psychological trauma he went through, he can never be
angry at himself for stopping that night (146). The author ends the essay re stating that he is a cripple,
but that he is alive, and a father and a husband sitting in the sunlight of June and writing this (146).
This makes the reader learn that cripples can also enjoy life s blessings and wonders. Despite that he is
now a cripple, Dubus doesn t regret his actions because he saved Luz Santiago s life.
Furthermore, to criticise the fact that dubus life was altered following an act to be a hero. I feel it was
an mistake for dubus to stop on a highway late at night to assist another sullivan. considering the fact
that is the time of night where you have drunk drivers and young teens racing. Walking on the
highway late at night is very unsafe. This is the time of night where drivers vision is impaired, people
tend to drive faster and illegal. With it being that time of night something was bound to happen simply
because of the the high risks of walking on the highway.
In other words I feel Dubus was at the wrong place at the wrong time. His life wouldn t have been

Volkswagen Business Ethics Essay
Abstract
In this paper, we will look at the business ethics controversy that was caused by Volkswagen and the
company had to pay up to $15 billion dollars to settle a civil court case. The controversy was caused
when it was found out that Volkswagen had installed a device in their diesel engine cars. This device
reduced pollution caused by the engine when it was being tested for emissions. This resulted in
cheating the authorities and promoting Volkswagen as an environmentally friendly car when it was not
actually one. It had these devices installed on most of its car models. The company initially had an
increase in sales but then was eventually caught and had to pay a large sum of money as mentioned
above to settle a lawsuit.
Keywords: Volkswagen, business ethics case, lawsuit, leadership
Volkswagen Business Ethics
On September 18, 2015 Volkswagen hit the news with a scandal relating to unethical practices
involved in the production of its diesel cars (McHugh, 2015, October 12, para. 3). Volkswagen used a
device to pass the emissions test when the emissions on these cars were higher than the allowed levels;
thereby the company cheated the system.
Emissions Device The company declared that it had a cheat device installed on its 11 million diesel
operated cars. What the device did was that it lowered the engines emissions when it was going
through an emissions test. The car easily passed the emissions test and later the device returned
emission levels back to normal,

Cause And Effect Of Cocaine
One of the most detrimental and addictive narcotics in the world today is cocaine. Cocaine dates back
as early as 3000 BC. Ancient Incas used the coca leaves to counter the effects of living in thin
mountain air. Native Peruvians in the 1500 s chewed the plant strictly for religious ceremonies.
Andean Indians are believed to chew the leaves of the coca plant to increase their energy for work
while decreasing their hunger and pain. It wasn t until 1859 when a German chemist Albert Niemann
successfully extracted the narcotic from the coca leaf. In the 1880 s, it was freely prescribed by
physicians for maladies as exhaustion, depression, and morphine addiction and was available in many
patent medicines ( Cocaine ), until users and doctors began to realize its dangers and side effects.
While it was not fully understood at the time, cocaine has many devastating and lasting effects on the
user.
Today, cocaine is commonly derived from the coca plant that is most commonly grown in Columbia
but also Peru and Bolivia. It is harvested and processed into a coca paste which the base of is extracted
and turned into the white powder form of cocaine. Once the powder is made it is often mixed with
laundry detergent, laxatives, or boric acid to cut down the potency and have more to distribute.
Cocaine can be used snorting, smoking, injecting or swallowed. The United States outlawed cocaine
in the early 1920 s but it wasn t until the 1970 s and middle of the 1980 s that cocaine was at

Frost-Pre-Depth
Frost depth is the depth that the groundwater in soil is expected to freeze. The frost depth differ
depends on the climate conditions of that area, the heat transfer properties of the soil and adjacent
materials, and on nearby heat sources. The building code takes frost depth into account of the
calculation because of frost heaving that can damage buildings by moving the foundation. it is
significant that the footings of buildings must be installed in the ground below the frost depth. If the
underground portions of the supporting structure are above the frost depth, the pressure applied on the
footing will be upward. This could push the footing out of the ground or even responsible for major
structural damage in buildings. So, always confirming

Maternal Instinct in The Turn of the Screw Essay
Henry James The Turn of the Screw is one of the more disputed texts in all of literature, as it is
famously known as an ambiguous text. The primary uncertain element of is whether there are ghosts
scaring the governess and the children, or whether the governess is actually going insane. Even though
a certain portion of the text is ambiguous, there are other portions of the text that are much more black
and white. For example, the relationships in this novella are nothing close to normal. There are three
key relationships in The Turn of the Screw: the Governess and Mrs. Grose, the Governess and Miles,
and the governess and Flora. All of these relationships show how the governess s maternal instinct
influences her interactions and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, going to Mrs. Grose for information is extremely maternal. Since there is a very real
possibility of danger, the governess wants to keep the children as safe as possible. The only way she
can protect Miles and Flora is by gathering information and becoming aware of what is going on.
Speaking of the children, the next relationship that must be focused upon is the one between the
governess and Flora, the estate owner s eight year old daughter. In the second chapter of the story, the
governess s maternal instinct shows up in the most simple of acts: she brings Flora along with her to
go pick up Miles. She does not have to bring Flora along at all. She could have just left Flora at Bly
manor, for Mrs. Grose and the other servants to take care of her. However, since the governess is new,
she has not yet had a chance to get to know everyone and how things work. Therefore, the governess
probably does not trust the others at Bly estate, and the only way to keep an eye on Flora is to bring
her on the trip and exercising her protective maternal instinct. A second example of the governess
exercising her maternal relationship can be found on page 68 of The Turn of the Screw. In this scene,
the governess goes to Flora s bedroom to check and see if she is alright. Right when it is clear that
Flora is not in her bed, the governess caught my breath with, all the terror that, five minutes ago, I had
been able to resist (James 68). Quite simply, it was the

arm themselves and get ready for war (Lukes 59). The Boston Tea Party tremendously changed the
Massachusetts government and made Britain create new laws for the Americans.
Secondly, there were several economic effects of the Boston Tea Party. To begin, the British had paid a
lot of money for the tea that had ended up in the Boston Harbor. Therefore, the British lost an
immense amount of money. The Intolerable Acts also had an economic impact as well as a political.
One of the Intolerable Acts called the Boston Port Act closed the port of Boston. Half of the citizens of
Boston were put out of work. Originally, the people of Boston got their food from the sea but after the
act they didn t have the sea available as a source of food. Boston lived on its sea trade, and people
worried that they might starve (Hakim 54). In other words, the harbor was the main way people made
their living and fed themselves. The only way the British would allow the harbor to open is that if the
Americans paid off the cost of the tea (Stuckey and Salvucci 177). The colonists would have to
unnecessarily work harder to earn back the money they had wasted. The colonists decided to boycott
British goods until Parliament repealed the Intolerable Acts, which

Big Two Hearted River, Part I, By Ernest Hemingway
Success comes only to those who stand firm throughout the trials and tribulations the world has to
offer, as many people come to realize through the gaining of their personal life experience. In Big Two
Hearted River, Part I , Ernest Hemingway utilizes figurative language such as symbolism, imagery,
and metaphors in order to impart and emphasize the importance of one s determination to endure the
challenges of existence in relation to their overall prosperity. Readers are led to reflect on how
persevering through the negative experiences in one s life can ultimately lead to positive experiences,
as well as the role perseverance plays in the lifelong search for stability. According to Hemingway, the

It is unclear whether or not they will stay that way permanently, but Nick has hope that they will
overcome their unfortunate situation; when he wonders how long they will be stained, Nick is
insinuating that there will eventually come a day, be it in weeks or years, that the grasshoppers will
return to their natural state. Hemingway uses this metaphor to parallel our perception of Nick himself.
The trauma Nick has endured throughout his life has impacted him as well as his identity significantly,
but there is hope and the promise of a better future if he is willing to withstand the burden in the
meantime. This sentiment is echoed by Nick when he lets go of the grasshopper, instructing it to fly
away somewhere (212). The message conveyed here is that life goes on; though the grasshoppers are
sullied by their experiences, as they might be for a while, there is a way for them to be free and thus,
there must be a way for Nick to be free as well. The rewards that follow in the wake of a negative or
traumatic event are earned by the mere fact that an individual was not willing to be swayed from their
path or to give up simply on the basis that it was difficult. Nick himself sums it up rather nicely when
he states that he s ...got a right to eat this kind of stuff, if [he s] willing to carry it (215) referring to, of
course, his backpack full of food and supplies that he d been shouldering for

How Did Jefferson And Hamilton Influence Government
Noble Cunningham s book mentioned two of the most important people who influenced politics and
government in America after the independence. Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton were
occupying important and sensitive position during that time in the American goverment.Thomas
Jefferson, a man born on April, 1743 in a rich family that afford him an excellent education in Virginia
(3). However, Alexander Hamilton was born in an uneducated poor family in West Indies on January
11, 1755 (3). Each one of these two politicians had conflict views on issues concerning government
that were generated from the environment they lived in. As a result, each of them shaped a political

Federalist represented by Hamilton wanted a manufacturing, commerce, finance, overseas trade,

yeoman farmers, who are the small farmers in the south, and they wanted the government to support
the interest of a common man. This different views of life styles made a huge conflict between the two
opposite parties represented by the two main leaders, Jefferson and Hamilton. They were both
working in the Washington s cabinet. Hamilton as the Secretary of Treasury with his group from New
England, and Jefferson as a Secretary of state with a group majority from the interior regions. When
the French Revolution started, Hamilton despised the violations and social disruptions, but Jefferson
admired the French Revolution because he thought it is the proper way to get freedom. Jefferson wrote
privately, God forbid we should be ever 20 years without such a rebellion.... The tree of liberty must

Effects of Zoning on Housing Option Value.
The 2011 New Orleans International Academic Conference New Orleans, Louisiana USA 2011
Effects Of Zoning On Housing Option Value Prathamesh Muzumdar, Illinois State University,
Normal, USAAbstract The research explores the subject of zoning effect on price value of a house in
a certain designated zone. Zoning is defined as a land under planned use. This results in price value of
the land. As the area of the land decreases an increase in price occurs. This research does not specify
the magnitude of a certain unit by which a housing price will increase or decrease but it estimates the
housing option value. This research helps the policy makers to improve long term policy decisions.

In his thesis, zoning was described both advantageous and disadvantageous. Disadvantages were
found to be failure to increase the efficiency for a proportion of land to its use. In spite of the back
drop, zoning has proved to its practicality in USA as land availability is greater as compared to that of
UK. This proves that zoning is effective way of urban planning over a greater stretch of land. Glasear
and Gyaurko estimated changes in housing price resulting in housing affordability which results due
to zoning impact. They have argued in their research that housing prices differ in different area as per
zoning pattern. The pattern change occurs for different region of different states. Due to this housing
price in California is greater as compared to other states. Zoning in USA is of 4 types: Euclidian,
Performance, Incentive, Design Based 1. Euclidean: It is used mostly in small towns and large cities.
Segregation of land is done on specified geographic district and dimensional standards stipulating
limitations on development activity within each type of district. Performance: It is performance based
or goal oriented criteria to establish review parameters for proposed development projects. This type
of zoning is intended to provide flexibility, rationality, transparency and accountability avoiding
arbitrariness of the Euclidian approach and better accommodating market principles and private

An Open Campus is a Bad Idea Essay
Wandering kids. Bumper to bumper traffic. Drug dealing. Is this the picture drawn when local students
have fifty minutes of freedom during lunch to do whatever they please? Students should not be
allowed to leave their school campus during lunch. An open campus would lead to truancy, disturb
local businesses and neighborhoods, and cause crime.
Truancy can occur among students if an open campus is accepted. If students have the privilege to
leave school for fifty whole minutes on their own, then they have the freedom to not come back. It
would break the trust between students and educators, and harsher rules would have to be enforced on
the open campus rule. Numerous students who decide to ditch the remaining periods would ... Show

Quietness is important to many people doing work in their homes and offices, and this can be
disrupted by groups of students walking around creating a stir. Lunch is possibly one of the most
praised recesses in a day because it is the longest break between work. Students who drive often go to
their favorite restaurants and diners for lunch. They can lead to an increase in traffic in the school and
neighborhood and mostly in the street with other student drivers. These recently inexperienced and
immature drivers are ordinarily involved in acts such as road rage and drag racing. Accidents can
occur with innocent motorists trying to get through the day. Disturbances can also consist of littering.
Students who usually roam the neighborhood and eat lunch do not properly dispose of their trash and
can simply through it anywhere. This waste becomes a displeasing mess and site for others to see what
an open campus can cause.
Numerous types of crimes can be committed if a school allows an open campus during the lunch hour.
Felonies usually occur during times when people are not at home. At lunch, students can have illegal
access to vulnerable houses if they choose to do so when they are wondering around in the streets.
This could lead to a crime increase among a neighborhood, and cause disputes and problems. Citizens
feel safe in their neighborhoods, but crime and robberies can make them feel uneasy. They would need

when he knows that Julia is in love with him, he continues to play with her emotions and makes her
spend time around him when he is with Francesa, his new girlfriend. Leon is a vain, self centred
teenager who enjoys tormenting Julia. Leon knows that Julia does not enjoy being around Francesa.
But, he forces her to. Snyde said that she had a shack... it was there that we went, I keeping watch,

Leon makes Julia Snyde keep watch while he was sexual intercourse with Francesa just a few feet

Persuasive Essay On Honey Bees
For every one out of three bites we take, it is due to the work of the honey bees. Many of the foods
such as fruits require pollination from a pollinator to be produced. As well as fruits, there are also
vegetables, nuts, seeds, fiber, and hay (Hoyt, 10). All essential to the world and all must be pollinated.
The little insects play a huge role in maintaining natural plant communities and ensuring production of
seeds in most flowering plants. In the United Kingdom, honey bees create an additional crop value of
165 million every year, with no additional cost to farmers (Gross, 2). With the hundreds of species of
bees, they are the world s leading pollinators. It is only now that we see that we have taken pollination
for granted. Praising pollination as one of nature s free services. It is not one of the factors that are
considered when looking at the agricultural possibilities of a given farm area, such as water, fertilizers,
or pesticides (Hoyt, 13). All around the world, there have been years recorded where the honey bees
just suddenly disappear. It is due to all of the agricultural and climate change. Honey bees should not
travel too far from their hive, but recently it is not possible for them to remain close and collect nectar
as well because of the decline of plants they can pollinate (Hoyt, 13). Their voyaging distances have
increased and not every honey bee makes it back to the hive due to the long distances they now have
to travel (Hoyt, 15). To decrease the distance they travel, humans must plant more gardens for the
honey bees to pollinate instead of allowing them to venture out blindly in search of the nectar they
need (Hoyt, 16). If Colony Collapse Disorder were to prevail over the honey bees, it would spell
disaster for the honey business as well as our entire food population. One in ten hives suffers from
Colony Collapse Disorder (Calabro, 8). The good news is that Colony Collapse Disorder has been in
decline over recent years. Some researchers even say that the endangerment of honey bees is a false
case. There are statistics that show that many of the foods that honey bees are responsible for
pollinating such as apples and almonds have actually increased over the years (Calabro, 8). If the food

The Beginning Of Leadership, Whatarangi Winiata
In the 1880s, the destruction of the Treaty of Waitangi caused a lot of commotion among the Māori
people, especially the leaders. In the beginning of the 1900s, Māori leadership appeared to be
insignificant, but soon a new generation emerged and began to turn things around. These new leaders
were educated at universities and took new approaches to obtaining what they needed (Pfeiffer et al
2010: 8, 10, 20). This essay will look at the beginning of leadership, Whatarangi Winiata,
contemporary leadership, and leadership attributes to prove how the concepts of whakapapa
(genealogy), iwi (tribe, people), arikitanga (chieftainship), and mana (authority, power) are embedded
within Māori leadership. From the beginning, leadership has been determined by whakapapa (Pfeiffer
et al 2010: 6). According to the Māori people, everything possess whakapapa from rocks, to
mountains, to people. Through whakapapa, the power of being a chief is passed down. Whakapapa is
the most important type of knowledge according the to Māori people, and it is customary that
everyone knows their immediate ancestors and pass this knowledge on. The power that is passed
down through whakapapa is called mana tūpuna. It is passed down by chiefly lineage from generation
to generation. When one receives this mana tūpuna they must complete very specific rituals and duties
to keep this power that has been passed down to them (Barlow 1991: 61, 62, 173, 174). For the Māori
people, arikitanga is the highest power

Influence Of Money On Electoral Process And Congress
Influence of Money on Electoral Process and Congress
Monetary value has had significant influence in determining the outcome of elections. The input and
strategies put forward by different forces determine the organizational scheme and the ability to grab
most of the seats. Although money has been linked to corrupt deals in many countries, with leaders
amassing power through corrupt and underhand methods, especially in Africa, this is not the case of
the same monetary influence witnessed in America. The conventions of the U.S.A raise a lot of money
in preparation for campaigns and elections to constitute a good number of representatives. The paper,
therefore, looks at the effect of money in the recently concluded elections of the Congress, giving a
deeper view of the 113th and 114th Congress election of the two major conventions.
The election of members to Congress in the United States of America is contingent on the financial
muscles of the candidates and their supporters. It all starts with a deep pocket investment. The recently
concluded election will yield a new administration with new cabinet members. The election of Donald
Trump as the next U.S President is partly attributable to the synergy and efforts made by some of the
most influential people in the Republican Convention. With Trump already appointing some of his
chief strategists, it is necessary to conduct a deeper analysis of the financial input of other members of
the Congress in an attempt to gain seats.

Short Story Sequel To Pride And Prejudice
A short story sequel to Pride and Prejudice Darcy and Elizabeth have been married for three years.
Elizabeth felt extremely happy. It was not easy to manage such a big manor, but with innate
intelligence and clever, she soon became prevalent with everyone though there were several servants
expressing disdain for her origins in the first few months of marriage. Among the love to the new
hostess, Mrs. Reynolds loved Elizabeth the most. Mrs. Reynolds loved Darcy the same as loved her
own child. When she saw Darcy altering the habit of travelling around and beginning to live in the
home, her heart was saturated with gratitude for Elizabeth. Elizabeth enjoyed as hostess dignity and
grace in Pemberley. On condition that she expressed a willingness of any things she loved, Mr. Darcy
would do everything to gratify her. What s more, some of her wishes she does not show. Nevertheless,
as long as Mr. Darcy was conscious of what she had in mind, he would make every effort to achieve
the aspirations of his wife. Although they had been married for one year, he still loved his wife very
much. In Mr. Darcy s heart, the meaning of happiness is together with Elizabeth. Because of Mr.
Darcy s love and gratitude, Elizabeth argued that she should not just act as a competent female owner
s duty as compassionate servants and farmers like her husband, more important was to take care of his
sister Georgiana. Georgiana had no sisters, and her mother died when she was overwhelmingly small.
She had always been exceedingly humble and timid at home. However, since her brother married,
Georgiana had a pretty and clever sister in law. Elizabeth s words and deeds gradually have good
effects on Georgiana, for that reason she slowly opened up mind. She loved the sister in law very
much, and she treated Elizabeth like her own sister to love in less than a year together, but also
Elizabeth took Georgiana like her own sister. All this, Mr. Darcy saw in the eyes. As a result, he loved
his dear Elizabeth more and more. They loved each other very much. Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy have
always been so in love, but only on the premise of the biggest quarrel since three days ago. Elizabeth

Causes Of Collapse And Its Effects On The World s Most...
The small, isolated Rapa Nui Island or, Easter Island began its history of human habitation with
difficulty. Settlers were 3,000 kilometers away from other settlements, native plants and animals were
limited, and its geographic location make the island subject to El Nino s varying conditions (Hunt and
Lipo 2007). Despite obstacles unique to Rapa Nui, as compared to its Polynesian neighbors, the
people of Rapa Nui were successful before collapse, surviving as one of the world s most remote
human outposts (Hunt and Lipo 2012). The cause of collapse is, however (and, of course), a subject of
debate over whether natural or anthropogenic factors led to the Rapa Nui s downfall, and a lack of
evidence has stopped anthropologists from reaching a more conclusive agreement. A union of the two
overarching factors have been suggested, however combination of climatic and anthropogenic causes
have been merely hypothesized but not investigated (Louwagie 290). Evidence is present and
convincing on both sides, with layered explanations accounting for the rapid decline of a complex,
highly functioning society. While researchers such as Jared Diamond and Donald Hughes seek to
showcase Rapa Nui as a cautionary tale against the dangers of ecocide, and thus paralleling the
modern world, there is an equal pushback to frame the Rapa Nui population as a capable, adaptive,

Dubliners By James Joyce
Dubliners, is a book in which James Joyce takes his readers back to early 20th century Dublin. Joyce s
collection of short stories portrays his homeland, Ireland, at a time of stagnation and the beginning of
the Irish Nationalist Movements, which sought independence from Great Britain. With such
dependence, Ireland and its citizens lives could not move forward and to enliven this condition in his
book Joyce use three great concepts. In the first short story Joyce mentions the words gnomon,
simony, and paralysis, and by doing so he foreshadows the themes of every story and how they are a
close description of Dublin at that time. Joyce use the concept of gnomon to typify incompleteness,
disconnection, and being in the shadow of someone or something, which is a important theme in his
book about the empty and incomplete lives of the Irish. Before meeting the odd old man, the boys
decided to skip school and go looking for adventures like in the Wild West, and the narrator tells: But
when the restraining influence of the school was at a distance I began to hunger again for wild

warfare of the evening became at last as wearisome to me as the routine of school in the morning

I Ve Got The Light Of Freedom Analysis
That said, we should not forget that leadership and empowerment often strongly depend on
mobilization. The fact that national leaders existed served to create role models that engendered a
sense of unity and communality. As the media were very selective when it came to the coverage of
local struggles, the attention that leaders like Martin Luther King and others received was important to
force the real and imaginative ties that invigorated the struggles on the local level. Therefore, Payne s
critique entails different layers. First, it is clearly a criticism of a scholarship that selectively focuses

Therefore, it is understandable that movement scholars tend to write from a rather activist stance.
There is nothing wrong with this per se, however, as historians, we should critically assess in how far
this positioning might limit our scholarship. At times, Payne tends to overemphasize the unity and the
solidarity among the organizers and the local population and fails to mention the tensions among
direct democratic groups like SNCC. Every social movement is made up of people, united under what
they perceive as an urgent need to bring about change. This unity tends to suppress theoretical and
practical differences for some time and can thus create a tremendous amount of communality and
solidarity among its members. However, as history has shown over and over again, as soon as the
external threat either diminishes or proves resistant to change, movements tend to disunite. This is

He wanted to understand the socio economic problems in the village. Therefore became close friends
with the locals, like Merle Kinbona, the protagonist of this novel. He became heavily involved in the
life there that Merle said he was becoming a rumhead just like those others down at the shop
(Marshall 262) with whom he socialized with on a nightly basis. However, when Harriet found out
Saul was too close with the locals, she persuaded the foundation responsible for funding Saul s
research to remove him from the project and put the project on hold. As a result, Saul leaved Harriet.
He stripped away her control of the most important aspect of her life, her marriage. He chose

Stick Figures In Australia
For the Australian fairy tale, it has been a long journey in search of nationhood identity. With the
enduring legacy of Australia s history as a settler colony there was no surprise that it invested the
landscape with strangeness and it became a part of the dream like world within fairy tales. Through
the history of Australian literary culture, the mythology of the bush tradition has been a powerful

straight back. Who are you? Why are you here? What do you want? (Tan, 69). The alienation of these
creatures draws upon a sense of ownership, somewhat reflecting the historic implications that got us to
Australia in the first

Art Integration Case Study Essay
Research Problem
Schools and educators are beginning to understand the value of inclusion of art education in K 12
curriculum more and more each year. So much so, that many states are adopting common core
standards and hiring highly qualify teachers to teach in the subject area of visual arts. Research over
the past decade reveals areas where effective arts education strategies, especially arts integration
techniques, have yielded practical and impressive results, (Education Digest, 2011). Part of what is
driving this initiative is the understanding that some students learn most effectively through the arts
(Robinson, 2013). Recent research reflects that art integration correlates with low performing learners
by increasing test scores. Studies conducted in North Carolina and Oklahoma with art integration
programs tracked consistent gains in student achievement as compared with state and district averages

Each group will be introduced to a bridge study unit. Teachers will cover academic material of
different bridge structures in relation to U.S. common core standard requirements for social studies,
science, and math. Students in Group B will be asked to select a bridge discussed in the unit. Then,
they are asked to draw a blueprint for a bridge of their own inspired by the bridge they selected. Once
their blueprint is complete, at a later date they are asked to construct a bridge from their blueprint with
various materials that the teacher will supply. During each part of this assignment students are
reminded to use/include the math and science concepts that were taught in the bridge unit. Bridge
blueprints and constructions done by Group B will be presented to the class for evaluation and a

During 1861, the Emancipation Reform had recently taken place. The economy was suffering and the need for money became crucial. The protagonist of the novel, Raskolnikov, struggles to earn money, which associates with his behavior. Fyodor Dostoyevsky, the author of the novel, considers Raskolnikov a divided character with different opinions. Raskolnikov displays characteristics of being delusional, self centered, and confused, which makes his character intriguing. Throughout the course of Part One, Raskolnikov has become delusional which contributes to his insanity. Over a course of time, he lost his ability to think and function on a normal basis. In addition, Raskolnikov lost his ability to control himself and has become impulsive. After the murder of the Pawnbroker and her sister, Lizaveta, Raskolnikov evolves into paranoia. His thoughts have become irrational and erratic. Raskolnikov has a conversation with himself where he mentions [h]e suddenly began to imagine that the old woman is still alive and might actually come to. Abandoning keys and bureau, he ran back to the body, seized the ax and lifted it once more over the old woman... (75). In this brief action, Raskolnikov is delusional determining whether the Pawnbroker is dead or not. He perceives that the old woman was dead from the beginning as he ... This project argues that there were many more complex reasons for Tony Blair s 2003 invasion of Iraq, other than the war on terror, the need to find weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and to free the Iraqi people from the tyranny of Saddam Hussain as the government implied. Factors such as the vast amounts of crude oil that the coastal areas of the Persian Gulf contains (which includes a large part of Iraq s coast) and the need to control future oil supplies was the overall determining factor on going to Iraq. There was also a need to stay allied with the US (which has been deeply ingrained in UK foreign policy since the Suez Crisis of 1956) and help secure US and in turn UK military presence in the middle east. Methodology Primarily, it would be imperative to establish the history of this conflict and exactly how it got to the point of war not only from Blair s point of view but also from the other generally considered reasons, mainly Oil and the US. Secondary sources such as Iraq between Occupations: Perspectives from 1920 to the Present (Zeidel, Baram and Rhode, 2010), Britain and the Middle East in the 9/11 Era (Hollis, 2010) and Blair s Just War: Iraq and the Illusion of Morality (Lee, 2011) are examined. Amir makes a mistake but in the end, learns from it. An example of this is when Assif is beating up Amir: [Amir] What was so funny was that, for the first time since the winter of 1975 I felt at peace. I laughed because I saw that, in some nook in the corner of my mind, I had been looking forward to this. (Hosseini 289). This quote shows us that while Assif is beating Amir, Amir s guilt is dieing down and he is at peace. This also shows that Amir would do anything for Hassan and in a way he is redeeming himself for what he did to Hassan. The moral of The Kite Runner is that no matter the sin, there is always a chance for redemption. The themes of loyalty, sacrifice and betrayal that are present throughout this novel leads to the lesson of redemption for Amir. In Antigone there are multiple lessons that the play teaches us, one of them is that too much pride is going to lead to misfortune and another one is don t try to change your fate. Both Antigone and Creon faced their misfortune for having excessive pride. The Kite Runner and Antigone starts off with all the same themes but in the end both Amir, Hassan, Antigone and Creon have different fate. • 5. Media and The Agenda Setting Theory According to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, section 11d, the accused is to be presumed innocent until proven guilty according to law in a fair and public hearing by an independent and impartial tribunal (Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, 1982). Despite the right to one s innocence preceding a fair and public trial, the indicted typically receives mass media coverage, making the individual susceptible to the opinion s of the public. This is especially true in the case of a renowned individual, such as a celebrity or politician. The media s coverage of the news, prior to a fair hearing, results in public scrutiny of subjects. Media involvement generates public uproar, frequently resulting in the condemning of the accused preceding their right to a fair trial as stated in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Not only is an individual s right, according to the charter, to be presumed innocent jeopardized by the media but also their assumed right to a private life is put into question. Agenda Setting Theory Agenda Setting Theory refers to the media s ability to influence the significance of topics to the public. Agenda setting allows for the establishment of public awareness to issues made relevant by media. There are two assumptions underlying the agenda setting theory (McCombs Shaw, 1972). Firstly, the media s portrayal of an event does not necessarily reflect reality; rather the media filters and shapes the news. Secondly, the infiltration of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Reasons For The Election Of 1860 The election of 1860 was one like no other, it was the event that lead to the succession of the eleven states that would become to be known as the Confederate States of America, including Texas. In the United States of America there was a lot of tension due to the different lifestyles of the North and the South, particularly those differences between the views in slavery. As we all know, the North was a very industrial and mechanics region, as for the South a very agricultural area that depended highly on their existence of slaves. Juvenile Delinquency in the Classroom Essays In depicting juvenile delinquency in the classroom, a few film directors portrayed novice teachers desire to reach what the school system customarily labeled as problem students. These films illustrate that these students are often categorized quickly and unfairly, and hopeful intervention by a few caring and zealous teachers is enough to change their lives and attitudes for the better. In the black and white 1955 film Blackboard Jungle, Mr. Dadier (played by Glenn Ford) was an idealistic teacher on his first job in a tough urban mostly white male high school. Mr. Dadier finally realized how to breathe life into his lessons so that they became meaningful to his students. He also showed respect for them by allowing them to showcase their talents in the Christmas program. These two strategies combined were enough to earn the respect of the classroom s gang leader. Artie West, in turn, put the word out to the other students to work hard and behave in this teacher s class. Other teachers shared in Mr. Dadier s success by stating that the momentum created in Mr. Dadier s English class had carried over into their own classes. This movie had a positive outcome. Continued hard work would be necessary for the positive change to continue. Blackboard Jungle opened and closed with Bill Haley and the Comet s Rock Around the Clock , which helped stir quite a ruckus so much so, the film was banned from many theatres. But the film s central point was nevertheless clear: students who we think are aimless and recalcitrant only need the thoughtful guidance of a concerned teacher to make learning meaningful and rewarding. Response To Marmot s The Status Syndrome In The Status Syndrome, Marmot argues that socioeconomic conditions lead to a hierarchical health gradient, where mortality progressively decreases as one s socioeconomic status improves. He illustrates this using mortality rate data about workers in the British civil service from the Whitehall studies. The studies show that mortality in all age groups is higher for clerical workers, who earn less and have a lower social standing, as compared to other professionals. Moreover, administrators, who earn more than both these groups, have the lowest mortality rates, which shows a gradient in health. The Mccarthy and the Salem Witch Hunts The McCarthy Era of the 1950 s and the Salem Witch Trials of the 1600 s were major events in American history that destroyed the lives and careers of many innocent victims. The parallels between these two events, which took place almost 300 years apart, are remarkable. The educated elite of the colony began efforts to end the witch hunting hysteria that had enveloped Salem. Increase Mather, the father of Cotton, published Cases of Conscience, which argued that it were better that ten suspected witches should escape than one innocent person should be condemned. Mather urged the court to exclude spectral evidence. A period of atonement soon occurred in which Samuel Sewall, one of the judges, issued a public confession of guilt and apology, and Reverend Parris admitted errors in judgment. He did, however, attempt to shift the blame to others. Governor Phips shifted the blame to Stoughton, who became the next Governor of Massachusetts. However, Miller wrote The Crucible not simply as a straight historical play detailing the Salem witch trials. Indeed, a good deal of the information in the play misrepresents the literal events of the trial: John Proctor was not a farmer, not a tavern owner, and during the time of the trials he was sixty years old and Abigail Williams only eleven. One possible reason why he continually elaborates the same night is because he is trying to justify the loss of his legs. His wanting to help strangers did not turn out to be the samaritan gesture he had intended it to be. One thing that I found ironic was that the car Dubus was waving at for help caused him to lose his legs and Luis his life. Indeed, it would seem that on this event alone Dubus actions would have proven to be fruitless despite his noble intentions of helping Luz and her brother. In his closing he tell us undoubtedly that he is a cripple, alive , and that he is a father and husband perhaps this is his recognition that he has more fulfilling duties to focus on rather than wallowing in regret of his actions. Nevertheless, through this remembrance he comes to terms with his own sacrifice and the fact that his life was forever altered. Overall, it was an enjoyable read because Dubus ends it on a good note. Despite all the physical and psychological trauma he went through, he can never be angry at himself for stopping that night (146). The author ends the essay re stating that he is a cripple, but that he is alive, and a father and a husband sitting in the sunlight of June and writing this (146). The controversy was caused when it was found out that Volkswagen had installed a device in their diesel engine cars. This device reduced pollution caused by the engine when it was being tested for emissions. This resulted in cheating the authorities and promoting Volkswagen as an environmentally friendly car when it was not actually one. It had these devices installed on most of its car models. Speaking of the children, the next relationship that must be focused upon is the one between the governess and Flora, the estate owner s eight year old daughter. In the second chapter of the story, the governess s maternal instinct shows up in the most simple of acts: she brings Flora along with her to go pick up Miles. She does not have to bring Flora along at all. She could have just left Flora at Bly manor, for Mrs. Grose and the other servants to take care of her. In his thesis, zoning was described both advantageous and disadvantageous. Disadvantages were found to be failure to increase the efficiency for a proportion of land to its use. In spite of the back drop, zoning has proved to its practicality in USA as land availability is greater as compared to that of UK. This proves that zoning is effective way of urban planning over a greater stretch of land. Glasear and Gyaurko estimated changes in housing price resulting in housing affordability which results due to zoning impact. They have argued in their research that housing prices differ in different area as per zoning pattern. The pattern change occurs for different region of different states. Due to this housing price in California is greater as compared to other states. Zoning in USA is of 4 types: Euclidian, Performance, Incentive, Design Based 1. Segregation of land is done on specified geographic district and dimensional standards stipulating limitations on development activity within each type of district. • 28. Persuasive Essay On Honey Bees For every one out of three bites we take, it is due to the work of the honey bees. Many of the foods such as fruits require pollination from a pollinator to be produced. As well as fruits, there are also vegetables, nuts, seeds, fiber, and hay (Hoyt, 10). All essential to the world and all must be pollinated. The little insects play a huge role in maintaining natural plant communities and ensuring production of seeds in most flowering plants. In the United Kingdom, honey bees create an additional crop value of 165 million every year, with no additional cost to farmers (Gross, 2). With the hundreds of species of bees, they are the world s leading pollinators. It is only now that we see that we have taken pollination for granted. Praising pollination as one of nature s free services. It is not one of the factors that are considered when looking at the agricultural possibilities of a given farm area, such as water, fertilizers, or pesticides (Hoyt, 13). All around the world, there have been years recorded where the honey bees just suddenly disappear. It is due to all of the agricultural and climate change. Honey bees should not travel too far from their hive, but recently it is not possible for them to remain close and collect nectar as well because of the decline of plants they can pollinate (Hoyt, 13). Their voyaging distances have increased and not every honey bee makes it back to the hive due to the long distances they now have to travel (Hoyt, 15). To decrease the distance they travel, humans must plant more gardens for the honey bees to pollinate instead of allowing them to venture out blindly in search of the nectar they need (Hoyt, 16). If Colony Collapse Disorder were to prevail over the honey bees, it would spell disaster for the honey business as well as our entire food population. One in ten hives suffers from Colony Collapse Disorder (Calabro, 8). The good news is that Colony Collapse Disorder has been in decline over recent years. Some researchers even say that the endangerment of honey bees is a false case. In the beginning of the 1900s, Māori leadership appeared to be insignificant, but soon a new generation emerged and began to turn things around. Settlers were 3,000 kilometers away from other settlements, native plants and animals were limited, and its geographic location make the island subject to El Nino s varying conditions (Hunt and Lipo 2007). Despite obstacles unique to Rapa Nui, as compared to its Polynesian neighbors, the people of Rapa Nui were successful before collapse, surviving as one of the world s most remote human outposts (Hunt and Lipo 2012). The cause of collapse is, however (and, of course), a subject of debate over whether natural or anthropogenic factors led to the Rapa Nui s downfall, and a lack of evidence has stopped anthropologists from reaching a more conclusive agreement. A union of the two overarching factors have been suggested, however combination of climatic and anthropogenic causes have been merely hypothesized but not investigated (Louwagie 290). Evidence is present and convincing on both sides, with layered explanations accounting for the rapid decline of a complex, highly functioning society. While researchers such as Jared Diamond and Donald Hughes seek to showcase Rapa Nui as a cautionary tale against the dangers of ecocide, and thus paralleling the modern world, there is an equal pushback to frame the Rapa Nui population as a capable, adaptive, and resilient people who were dealt a bad hand. With such dependence, Ireland and its citizens lives could not move forward and to enliven this condition in his book Joyce use three great concepts. In the first short story Joyce mentions the words gnomon, simony, and paralysis, and by doing so he foreshadows the themes of every story and how they are a close description of Dublin at that time. Joyce use the concept of gnomon to typify incompleteness, disconnection, and being in the shadow of someone or something, which is a important theme in his book about the empty and incomplete lives of the Irish.
