scientific journals findings. In my opinion there were more deficits in this article rather than
benefits that showed the true scope of the study. I understand that it is aimed at an audience much
different that the scientific journal but I still believe it is far too simplistic. However, there were a

I. Introduction
In Australia, Closing the Gap has become a key focus in the way governments have decided to
address indigenous inequality. The term closing the gap can be traced back to policy introduced in
New Zealand in the 1990s aimed at addressing inequality in MДЃori communities. Governments in
both Australia and New Zealand have tried to bridge perceived gaps between these Indigenous
groups and the rest of society particularly in relation to gaps in socioeconomic status. However
such policies may be problematic as they tend to ignore issues of self determination and sovereignty
sought by Indigenous groups (Cornell 2006:9 10; Muldoon Schaap 2012:535). Ignoring claims of
self determination and sovereignty may be indicative of ongoing divisions in settler states working
to accommodate the needs and outcomes of Indigenous groups given the undercurrent of conflictual
and often violent histories that mar the relations between the two groups. As such, this essay seeks
to compare these policies regarding inequalities between Indigenous societies and their settler states,
as well as the relevant contexts of these policies, in order to highlight issues that emerge in relation
to indigenous claims for sovereignty and concepts of nationalism.

favoring or being against something. This comes from people being raised into having something
to believe in or against that agrees with their own reason and common sense. When people have

during World War II, was kept in many concentration camps. After a night of horror on a train,

know what was in store for them later, having never heard of Auschwitz, but they had their Jewish

As stated by the Bureau of Labor Statistics there were 375 workers killed in shootings while on
the job in 2012 alone. Robbers made up 33 percent of the workplace homicides that involved
shootings in 2012, the coworkers made up 13 percent of that ( Workplace Homicides, 2013).
Another statistic to mention is that there were 140 government officials that were shot and
killed by coworkers on the job from 1992 until 2012. So obviously over the years this number

The Era of Globalization is fast becoming the preferred term for describing the current times.
According to Patricia (2001), just as the Depression, the Cold War Era, the Space Age, and the
Roaring 20 s are used to describe particular periods of history; globalization describes the political,

1. Once you have identified supporting claims, the grounds of an argument, then you need to be
able to evaluate the evidence that will be used to prove these claims. Evidence is the most
important part of any inductive argument. But it is important to recognize that not all evidence is
reliable. Some types of evidencecan t be trusted at all. And even when good evidence is used, it
might not be appropriate for certain types of claims. Thus, evidence has to be both reliable and

2. To oversimplify for instructional purposes, I want to explore nine major types of evidence that
are most commonly used in arguments, starting with the weakest form of evidence and moving
