The First Day Of English Class
I look the first debate judge in the eyes and he nods. Then my gaze drifts to the second one and she
smiles. Finally I look to my right at my final judge, he simply winks at me. I close my eyes and count
to three. It s finally time to begin; this is my time. These next three minutes everyone has to listen to
me and my opinion. I open my mouth, but the only thought going through my head is, why? Why am I
doing this? Why am I here? Why did I make this mistake?
It was the first day of English class and the teacher asked, who here has ever given a class presentation
before? I looked around hoping, praying, that someone else is like me. However fate was not on my
side. Every hand in the class was proudly raised high and I was all alone on my little island of fear.
The teacher looked directly at me and asked why I had not ever done a presentation. I m a clicker, I
mumbled, it was barely audible but the teacher heard it and his face softened. Well Mr. Peschansky it s
time you become a talker.
A psychological study done in the early 70 s found that people are more afraid of public speaking then
of death. Standing at the front of the room in my first debate tournament I realize just how true that is.
All I can hear is my heart hammering away in my chest, my legs feel like they are going to give and I
m shaking all over.
I never opened my mouth when I was in grade school. I was the kid that was always reading. If my
head was not buried in a book then something was probably

My Revision Process Analysis
When it comes to my paper, my revision process was different from my papers article. The first thing I
did was self edit/ revision. I started with ten pages, and I edited it down to 8pages. With the peer
review, Nick provided me with his great opinion, and that helped me take out redundant information
which brought my page count to 6pages. In Office hours, your overview helped me narrow down my
page numbers to 4pages. After the office hours, I worked extensively to incorporate your advice into
my papers. I followed your advice like going back to add dates in the in text citations, moving some
topics from the different paragraph at various locations and making sure I had the correct citations and
references. The one thing I got stuck on and

The Normative View Of Christianity
Christianity is a widespread religion that reaches many different cultures and places all around the
world. Since it is such a widespread religion there are many types of interpretations that can be
developed based off the words and teachings of the Bible. Most commonly we have the normative
view of Christianity. The normative view can most basically be understood as the highly shared
teachings of churches. Another type of interpretation that encompasses all beliefs that are not
compliant with the normative view is called esoteric. Here we will compare the interpretations of
Daskalos, the Great Teacher of Cypress, and his Researchers of Truth against the normative view of
Christianity as understood by both Catholics and Protestants. In order to further investigate the
differences between Daskalos esoteric beliefs and normative beliefs we must understand fully what
esoteric and normative truly mean. A few beliefs of normative Christianity, as explained by Moreman,
are as follows: the belief in judgement after death. There are only 2 places to go, hell or heaven and
that may or may not be after a slight stop in purgatory, the intermediate state of being right after death
where souls await resurrection (Moreman, 62). When the resurrection happens, people will be
resurrected in their physical bodies, thanks to interpretations by St. Augustine of Hippo (Moreman,
62). Those souls or people that are evil will spend eternity in hell in fiery damnation (Moreman, 63).

Comparing the Narrative and Formal Devices of ChungKing...
Comparing the Narrative and Formal Devices of ChungKing Express and A Bout de Souffle
Wong Kar Wai s movie ChungKing Express bears many similarities to Godard s A Bout de Souffle .
To start with, Wai employs a number of cinematic techniques, obviously derived from the French New
Wave, such as for example the jump cut which is evidently taken from Godard s film. His use of the
Godard ian jump cut seamlessly blends temporally exclusive scenes together, making the passage of
time unnoticeable. Other Godard ian touches include the many shots of clocks, which remind the
viewer that despite the protagonist s fixation on the past, time continues to move on and that moments
in the present are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She wears the same type of cloths, has the same hair do and her rather eccentric attitude to life also
corresponds to that of her French counterpart.
The primary function of the traditional Hong Kong film industry was to churn out movies aimed at the
general public and make sure that they bring in a profit. This is much like the French film industry
was before the emergence of the French New Wave. However Wai s ChungKing Express was clearly
not aimed at the masses, but rather only at the people who have developed a real understanding and
appreciation for the art of film. Godard s A Bout de Souffle was also a film which was made to rebel
against the old style of French cinema and break the conventions of the film industry. In this way, both
of the film directors have something in common with each other.
Much of Wai s work has included themes of time passing and how every human emotion, every
material object or specifically tinned food expires. This reoccurring matter isn t simply an accident but
it carries a very significant political message. At the time that Wai made ChungKing Express , Hong
Kong was pending to be handed over from the British democratic powers, to the Chinese communist
government. This period was very turbulent for the Hong Kong people as they were in anticipation of
a great change, but they didn t know whether it would be negative or positive.

Essay on Swifts Powerful Message in A Modest Proposal
Swifts Powerful Message in A Modest Proposal
In the Holy Bible, Jesus Christ states that there will always be poor, pathetic, struggling masses and
nothing we can do will ever completely eliminate this element. Swift also acknowledges the homeless
people, but in a different vein than Christ. In A Modest Proposal, the narrator expresses pity for the
poor, but at the same time he strives to maintain his social dominance over them. According to Swift,
the English Irish common people of the time exist in a disgusting state, a fact that he attempts to make
the English Parliament aware of. The poor that Swift refers to are Catholics, peasants, and every
homeless man, woman, and child in the entire kingdom. Swift is ... Show more content on

The last statement regarding the Pretender in Spain is a stab at Catholicism, the Pretender, being the
Catholic James II, claimant to the English crown. In fact, Catholics are the butt of many sardonic
jokes in the essay. Swift viewed Catholics as the main cause of this deplorable state, being the
principal breeders of the nation as well as our most dangerous enemies (2184). This refers to the
Catholic doctrine prohibiting birth control.
Swift estimates that there are 120,000 children of poor parents born annually. These children are a
burden on society because . . .we can neither employ them in handicraft or agriculture (2183), they
have no practical skills or uses. To deal with this problem, Swift makes his modest proposal, using a
device that is timeless in its effectiveness shock value:
[A] healthy child well nursed is at a year old a most delicious
nourishing, and wholesome food, whether stewed, roasted,
baked or boiled; and I make no doubt that it will equally serve
in a fricassee or a ragout. (2182)

How Does Marjane Satrapi Use Animation In Persepolis
In the animation Persepolis, Marjane Satrapi uses color in the beginning of the animation during her
present day life and black and white for flashbacks or her past life. The majority of the animation is
the story of Marjane s life in the past so it is in mostly black and white. This is an interesting way of
using color because in a way color is used as a form of timeline, there are parts of the animation that
switch from present to past, so Satrapi just switches from black and white to color to show time
period. I find this concept very appealing and creative. are the growing tensions of the political
climate in Iran in the 70s and 80s, with members of her liberal leaning family detained and then
executed, and the background of the disastrous ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Marjane grew up in Iran during the Iran/Iraq war in the 1970s which creates a layer of complication in
her life due to living in a war zone. As a child there was protest going on against the Shah that was in
power at that time. Marjane as a child is a very lively child that is frustrated by the current events
being war and violence. By taking us through her life starting the flashback at childhood then though
teen years we are able to learn about a personal experience on being an Iranian woman during this
time. I did not know that women in Iran during the post war periods were treated so poorly by men in
authority, I also did not know that alcohol was a forbidden beverage. I learned a lot through this
animation by understanding what Marjane went through in her life. The content of Marjane s life as a
teenager was very entertaining to watch. Marjane went from being so restrained in Iran to smoking pot
at punk concerts in Europe. When an animator is honest in their work it is appealing and easy to
watch; which is how I felt about this animation. Satrapi did not hold back in language, emotion, and
details throughout the story of this

The Social Cognitive Theory Of Albert Bandura
The Social Cognitive Theory of Albert Bandura Albert Bandura is well known for his
accomplishments and scientific contributions to the world of psychology. His research has helped to
explain how individuals in a society are influenced by other individuals in the same society. It has also
helped in understanding how external factors can influence s ones feelings of self worth. Albert
Bandura was born in Alberta, Canada on December 5, 1925. Throughout his childhood, Bandura was
part of a school system that had only a modicum of books and controlled access to educational
resources. The students had to take charge of their own education, (Cherry, 2014). After high school
Bandura enrolled into the University of British Columbia, where his fascination for psychology began.
Originally, psychology was just intended to be on of Bandura s filler classes, but with more exposure,
it ignited his interest in it and he began pursuing it as a career. To continue his pursuit for his career as
a psychologist, Bandura attended the University Iowa for graduate school. It was there that Bandura
both his M.A. degree (1951) and his Ph.D. (1952). Soon after he earned his Ph.D., Bandura started
work at Stanford University, where he continues to work. Bandura is best known for his development
of The Social Learning Theory. Bandura (1977) stated in his theory that behavior is instructed from
the environment through a process known as observational learning. The Social Learning Theory

Comparing Functionalism And Symbolic Interactionalism
Deviance in sociology is defined as behaviour that violates or goes against the cultural norm being
non normative (Henslin et al., 2013)
Using the Mainstream Australia s view of Aboriginals and the significant disparity in their quality of
education, health and socio economic status compared to that of Non Indigenous Australians; this
essay will be unpacking how Functionalism and Symbolic interactionalism view and understand
deviance and the difference in views between the two paradigms. Functionalists believing that
deviance is present in all cultures and thus serves a crucial role in the interconnected machine that is
society while Symbolic Interactionists argue that deviance is relative and created through the labels
particular cultures place on certain behaviour.

A functionalist views deviance as a failure to live up to norms that are institutionalised in a society
(Wright and Randall, 1978). French Sociologist Emile Durkheim spearheaded the development of this
theory as well as argue that deviance plays a necessary role in society; to clarify norms and moral
boundaries, strengthen connections between people reacting towards deviance as well as promote
positive changes in society (Macionis and Gerber, 2011). Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders have
faced an extensive history of discrimination and egregious treatment; from forced displacement, due
to European Colonisation in 1788 to the systematic racial cleansing of 1951 via the Assimilation Act

Conservation Of Liquid With A Three Year Old
Conservation of Liquid with a Three year old Cindy Louie San Jose State University Conservation of
Liquid with a Three year old Jean Piaget is a developmental psychologist who studied young children
and analyzed their development at a young age. Piaget is well known for his four cognitive
development stages: sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete, and formal operations; as mentioned by
Siegler and Alibali (2004). Siegler and Alibali (2004) also stated that these four stages begin as soon
as the child is born and it continues throughout their young adolescent years all the way to adulthood.
Piaget conducted numerous research experiments towards young children in order to prove his
hypothesis and drew conclusions for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During this stage, children may develop mental representations but lack ability to think logically and
understand reversibility. Siegler and Alibali (2004) explained that between the ages of 6 to 12 years
old, a child has the ability to learn perception and take information from multiple sources and piece
them together. This type of development is also critical in the cognitive stages of a child, because it
develops awareness and it allows them to experience world real recognition. This is the third stage of
cognitive development, also known as the operational stage. The conservation of liquid task will be
apparent in distinguishing a child who is either in the pre operational stage or operational stage due to
their abilities mentioned previously. I do not agree with Piaget s conclusion about limiting this
experiment to older school aged children because through early education and awareness, any children
can pass this experiment. Since Piaget was the only one that transferred the water from one cup into
the taller one, the children probably thought it was some kind of magic trick. For this modification, I
allowed my little cousin, Waverly, to pour the water into the cup to show that I did not do anything to
tinker with the water, and everything she saw is literally in front of her eyes.

AO Neville s Three Acts Of Genocide
When AO Neville became Chief Protector of Aborigines in Western Australia in 1915, over a million
Aboriginals had already been killed by British colonists, treated as animals after Australia was
declared terra nullius by the first settlers. Neville aimed to improve the lives of Aboriginals and
introduced his policies of assimilation, in which full blooded Aboriginals would die out and half
blooded Aboriginals would be removed from their families and interbreed with the white community.
Neville truly believed that he was doing the right thing for Australia and for the Aboriginals by
assimilating the populations. These policies of assimilation however, while somewhat well intended,
failed to improve the lives of the Aboriginals. They were ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Further indication that Neville s policies were not beneficial is the fact that the standard of living of
modern Aboriginals is still in the same place it was under Neville s leadership (F). The lives of the
ancestors of these Aboriginals had not been improved by Neville s policies, and, as a result, neither
had their own lives. Source F states that the conditions of life in which they find themselves remain
impoverished and highly oppressive . Modern Aboriginals are more susceptible to serious diseases,
have an abnormally low life expectancy for both genders, which is odd for a well developed country
such as Australia, have a high unemployment rate and those which are employed are paid less than
their white counterparts (F). This is further demonstrated in Source H, where Aboriginal children were
withdrawn from schools if white parents complained, which now directly correlates to the high
unemployment rate. The children received a low level of education, as they were expected to work as
manual labourers and domestic servants (J). Source F contains statistics collected thirty years after the
assimilation policies ended. The fact that the unemployment rate has increased after thirty years
suggests that these Aboriginal children who were denied education are unable to find work due to this

Plastic Surgery And Its Effects
Plastic surgery has advanced drastically in the past few years. Before plastic surgery was an option, to
correct a body part from injury, disease or an illness they had to just deal with their appearance. Today
many people are getting plastic surgery to improve their appearance because they believe in their
minds that something is wrong with them base on what our sociality standard are. I think it is an
unnecessary surgery and many people put their health and well being at risk. Some people even lose
their lives because the toxins have leaked in their body, face lifts leaves some people deformed, and
mentally handicap.
The history of plastic surgery originated in the early 800 B.C; when surgeons in India reconstructed
broken noses, for people who had taken off as a form of punishment. In World War I many plastic
surgery techniques were developed in order to correct soldier s disfigured facial injuries. (History of
Plastic Surgery) In the beginning, breast argumentation first started to women with micromastia,
which is, an underdevelopment of breast tissue due to a congenital disorder. In 2007 nearly twelve
million cosmetic procedures were performed, the top five were breast argumentation, liposuction,
nasal surgery, eyelid surgery and abdominoplasty. (Wikipedia)

Cultural Imperialism And The United States
During my time in Guatemala, I believe that the social issues I came in the most contact with were
hegemony and cultural imperialism, or in other words, the influence the United States has over
Guatemala. No matter where I was, whether it be the streets of the small town of San Miguel or the
larger, more developed city of Guatemala City, I could not help but notice how much of an impact the
United States has. Throughout the course of a month we learned a lot about the root causes of poverty
America as a hegemon through both readings and discussion. The footprint the U.S. has left in
Guatemala was apparent not only while reading and learning about the history of Latin America, but
while visiting the country itself. In addition, we had the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

took a closer look at the signs, I noticed why they looked so similar. There were American models on
the signs. In particular, I noticed a blonde haired woman on the front of a billboard advertising
shampoo. I also noticed American women on billboards advertising jeans and beer. When looking into
bars I saw calendars with American women as well. It was impossible not to notice the influence that
the U.S. had not only on methods of advertising, but also on the images used. In addition to noticing
the U.S. hegemon while on the streets of Guatemala, I also noticed it while living with the people.
While staying with host families, we were given the opportunity to take in an entirely different culture

Blue Skies Irving Berlin Meaning
Blue Skies was one of the songs written by Irving Berlin months after the birth of his first child,
daughter Mary Ellin, in 1926. This piece came during a time of transition in Berlin s life, and the song
itself has transcend many centuries, adapting to the style of each time. It is important to explore the
differences between the periodical versions of Blue Skies ; however, the underlying message of the
song remains constant throughout time. The lyrics of Irving Berlin s Blue Skies plays with the
contrasting meanings behind the word blue, along with switching tonalities, allowing the song to
portray a hopeful outlook toward the future, while it s depressing mood brings this hope back to
reality.

Blue Skies started its rise to popularity in the 1926 musical Betsy, which was originally a Rodgers and
Harts production. The musical was a flop and Jewish star, Belle Baker, requested new music. Blue
Skies was written into the second act. The song s introduction was made even more memorable by the
fact that Ms. Baker forgot the lyrics, and Irving Berlin himself sang them from the front row.

For Employees Respect and Opportunity. About Dollar General Corporation Dollar General
Corporation has been delivering value to shoppers for over 75 years. With more than 12,000 stores in

Employees Regular employees are not that well paid but they are Ok. Since most of their stores are
located in rural areas, they are able to have employees for cheaper wages. 4. Respect In a way, people
in rural areas do not have the experience of buying higher quality products. Most of those Brands
being sold by them are either lesser known ones or, specially made with discounted prices by cutting
corners. For example if I buy a Brut Deodorant for a $ 1.00, it s quality wouldn t be the same as the
one that I would buy from Maycees. Same goes with other products. In terms of Respect, they need to
respect the intelligence of the customer. So, those Brands mentioned in their website is an eyewash
and is of inferior quality. 5. Opportunity Certainly there is a good opportunity for buying cheaper
products. Most goods are bought in large volumes and factories in poorer countries are compelled to
offer cheaper prices to keep their factories running with that kind of bulk buying. DG does not require
a factory to be Audited and certified for quality standards and social compliance. Their products are
sourced from the lowest priced, low standard small factories based in rural areas that usually employ
child labour. These factories are able to produce cheap items because they do not have to add
additional costs of being a compliant factory. This results in cheaper items coming to their shelves and
being passed onto an unsuspecting customer. Their introduction does not reflect their mission
statement for the above given reasons in terms of : Respect, a better life for customers, superior

Comparing Beowulf And The Epic Of Beowulf
Anglo Saxons refers to settlers from the German regions that migrated to Britain during the fall of the
Roman Empire. In the story Beowulf, his actions portray him, indeed be an epic hero. Both
Christianity and Paganism are both portrayed throughout the epic Beowulf. Beowulf frequently speaks
of God throughout the story, while there are also many Pagan elements that are evident throughout the
story as well. In addition, It s hard to ignore the Christian and Pagan elements in Beowulf. These types
of elements are what define the heroic warrior in the epic Beowulf (Vengeance the Pagan and
Christian Inspiration). Throughout the epic Beowulf, while the Anglo Saxons followed Christianity,
they had a hard time letting go of the Pagan beliefs when things got hard. First, references to the bible
are one way that Anglo Saxons followed Christianity, while they had a hard time letting go of the
Pagan beliefs. One of the first Christian aspects in the story is referring to how God created the earth.
Furthermore, The Almighty created the earth, creating all the beautiful landscapes that is marked off
by the waters, and lighted by the moon and sun (The Monster Grendel from Beowulf Translated by
Burton Raffel the Monster Grendel 1). Furthermore, in this quote the author portrays how the
Almighty created the earth and how he gave life to everything in the world. This quote is reminding us
of the religious aspect of the poem because it is a Christian viewpoint, only about Pagans. In

Jury Duty In Canada s Jury System
In Canada, jurors are poorly paid and most of the times, jurors suffer from personal hardship. In
Ontario, A juror gets virtually no payment for the first 10 days of work and $50/day for the next 39
days and $100 a day after that. What s more, the jurors are expected to cough up money for parking.
Add to it, the price of gas, the daily trip to the courthouse can be really expensive for a long trial. (

an employer with generous welfares might receive their regular salaries, but most jurors get nothing
more than a promise that their job will be there when they come back to work at the end of the trial.

Obama, Commenting on the American Dream
The American Dream is a set of ideals in which freedom includes the opportunity for prosperity and
success. It is the belief that, no matter how poor you begin life, you can achieve upward social
mobility for your family and children. Arthur Miller s Death of a Salesman, crushes the ethos of the

who just do not make it. Willy will not face the truth though. Willy is a failure in life, but he feels even
more so because of the fact that success in the American Dream is supposed to be available to anyone.
This figure has significantly affected his family, especially his sons. He consistently blames the world
throughout the play, such as blaming the teacher for flunking Biff, and causing his failure at getting a
good paying job. He also goes on to blame Chevrolet for the carburetor tearing up, Bernard for not
letting Biff cheat, and eventually realizes it was his entire fault all along. Once he realizes this, instead
of facing the truth about his failure, he commits suicide.
Many would say that this heart breaking story of Willy s life epitomizes moral law . Moral law is the
indestructible will of man to achieve his humanity (Tragedy and the Common Man). Basically, it s
man drive to save his pride, or gain sort of power. There is no better example of a man struggling with
moral law than Willy Loman. He not only struggles with the other characters, but with himself. His
inner conflict is exaggerated in his multiple flashbacks.

James Baldwin s Remember This House By James Baldwin
James baldwin was an American novelist, essayist, playwright, poet, and social critic. His essays were
mostly of racial, sexual, and class distinctions in Western societies, mostly in mid 20th century
America. Some of Baldwin s essays are book length, for instance The Fire Next Time (1963), No
Name in the Street (1972), and The Devil Finds Work (1976). An unfinished manuscript, Remember
This House, was expanded upon and adapted for cinema as the Academy Award nominated
documentary film I Am Not Your Negro. Writer and playwright James Baldwin was born August 2,
1924, in Harlem, New York. One of the 20th century s greatest writers, Baldwin broke new literary
ground with the exploration of racial and social issues in his many works. He was especially well
known for his essays on the black experience in America.
Baldwin was born to a young single mother, Emma Jones, at Harlem Hospital. She reportedly never
told him the name of his biological father. Jones married a Baptist minister named David Baldwin
when James was about three years old. Despite their strained relationship, he followed in his
stepfather s footsteps who he always referred to as his father during his early teen years. He served as
a youth minister in a Harlem Pentecostal church from the ages of 14 to 16.
Baldwin developed a passion for reading at an early age, and demonstrated a gift for writing during
his school years. He attended DeWitt Clinton High School in the Bronx, where he worked on the

Death Be Not Proud By John Donne
The progression of societal beliefs regarding our approach towards death is dependent upon the
changing nature of both cultural and historical contexts. In Donne s Holy Sonnet Death be not proud
he uses second person narration to address Death as thou , thee and thy , death is not considered
conceptually but anthropomorphised as the poems fundamental pride. In Death be not proud , we see
how the rumination of death is shaped by Elizabethan values. Through the subverted Petrarchan
structure and style, Donne s use of apostrophe denigrates the omnipotence of death and lowers its
statue to the level of the poet. This corresponds with contextual religious values of certainty in
external afterlife and death as a transitory stage. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Vivian s reversion to the punctuation, Death semicolon thou shalt die, is symbolic of the 1990s
literature culture wars, as Edson argues that a personal interpretation of the text is crucial to
understanding its virtues. This is seen as Donne s religious context only saw a mere pause, comma,
between life and eternal life, whereas, modern existential beliefs see this transition as more potent and
vivid, semicolon. This uncertainty can be seen through the final stage directions, the instant she is
naked and beautiful, reaching for the light, which symbolises purity, peacefulness and hope.
Therefore, we see the modern context produce an uncertain, yet uplifting approach to death. Donne s
poem, The Sunne Rising, expounds how his view of life is shaped by relationships. We see this as the
poet defies the natural order by apostrophising the Sun, Busie old foole. In Donne s context, the Sun
was seen as the centre of the natural world and the source of energy and life. Donne s irritated, jesting
tone denounces the Sun s power when compared with his lover. This is seen through the metaphorical
description, This bed thy centre is, these walls, thy sphere, which extrapolates the apotheosistic nature
of his relationship, and is

Edmund s character is a representation of man because we do sinful deeds, but we are never too far
gone that redemption is not an option. The story displays this when Edmund is being mean and
deceitful and then slowly transforms into an admirable, brave warrior. When the witch was defeated
Peter says, It was all Edmund s doing, Aslan. We d have been beaten if it hadn t been for him (p.195).
Aslan, the lion king epitomizes the greatness of Narnia and the creatures that it inhabits. Aslan
displays Christ like traits by having power that is unmatched and being unquestionably benevolent. He
shows forgiveness after rescuing Edmund from the White Witch. Aslan tells his brother and sisters,
Here is your brother and there is no need to talk to him about what is past (p.153).
Just as Christ separates our transgressions from as far as the east is from the west. Later, he sacrifices
his life for Edmund, just as Christ sacrificed his life for all of mankind. This sacrificial expression was
governed by the mystical laws set forth by The Emperor Beyond The Sea.
The Emperor Beyond The Sea is Aslan s father. He is the ultimate God of Narnia and has been around

The Role Of The Perfect Utopian Society In George Orwell s...
What makes a good life for individuals and what constitutes the perfect utopian society? These are
important questions for all humans living in the modern world and the answers to these questions
radically affect the way that we view how power should be used. In George Orwell s Animal Farm, we
see the animals come out from under Mr Jones power, they try to make the perfect world but fail
because someone is always going to have the strength or willpower to go one step further than you
can. In The Truman Show, directed by Peter Weir, we see Christof try to create his idea of the perfect
world so that at least one person, Truman Burbank, might be able to live a good life. Both texts
suggest that the good life is determined by the degree of freedom that they have to choose their own
destiny and this then affects what the perfect society looks like because the perfect society would
involve ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to live out what they consider to be a good life.
The problem with trying to create a perfect society is that there will always be someone who uses their
power to control others for the bad, not the good.
The capacity for an individual to live a good life is dependent upon the degree of freedom that they
have to choose their own destiny. In The Truman Show, Weir suggests that without freedom one
cannot be truly happy. Through Truman s life Christof stopped him from experiencing different events
throughout his life, he messed with Truman s emotions. In

Career Development in Generation X Essay
Career Development in Generation X
Generation X refers to the population cohort following the Baby Boomers. Sources differ as to the
exact years during which this cohort was born. Coupland (1991) suggests 1960 to 1970; Bradford and
Raines (1992) propose 1965 to 1975; and Howe and Strauss (1993) suggest 1961 to 1981. Whatever
the birth years, it is their common life experiences that give this cohort an identity. Individuals born in

The twenty somethings of Generation X who are currently in the work force entered the labor market
with no expectations. Many of them believe the best years (in terms of society) are behind them
(Howe and Strauss 1993). They have been told that they are the only generation since the Civil War to
come of age unlikely to match their parents economic fortunes (ibid., p. 7). They place little faith in
job security. They saw their parents laid off without cause and their perceptions of the working world
were shaped in time of economic turmoil. Consequently, they tend to see every job they take as
temporary and every company as a stepping stone to something better, or at least to something else
(Filipczak 1994, p. 23). Since they have adopted the philosophy that there are no guarantees, they are
not interested in working their way up. They want to be valued immediately for their skills (Bradford
and Raines 1992). They see their career strength in their ability to solve problems and do jobs that
others are not able to do. They believe that security nowadays comes from the transferability of one s
skills to other jobs rather than from advancement in hierarchically managed organizations (Wilkinson
1995, p. 67). They use job hopping as a way to build their skills and make themselves more
marketable (Filipczak 1994, p. 27).

The Instrumentalist Theory Of Ethnic Conflict In Aceh
For instrumentalists, resource, especial the scarce resource, always being an important factor of ethnic
conflicts. Lake and Rothchild stand on the strand of rational choice, they assume that scarce resources
related to the collective fear of the future, and politics are means for groups to control the access to
scarce resources. For instrumentalists, ethnic identity is not valuable in and of itself, it is basically a
mask for a core of real interests (Varshney 2009, 288). The case of conflicts in Aceh approave this
assertion that competition for resources typically lies at the heart of ethnic conflict. Therefore, this
short answer will be two fold: first, a critical understanding of instrumantalism will be provided in
order to illustrate why resources are important? Second, a case of Aceh will be explained along with
the instrumentalism.
In the article Containing Fear: The Origins and Management of Ethnic Conflict, Lake and Rothchild
sited that the intense ethnic conflict is most often caused by collective fear of the future (Lake and
Rothchild 1996, 41). Their explanatory framework is rational choice oriented which based on the
instrumentalist theory of ethnic conflict. For instrumentalists, ethnicity mask a deeper core of interests
(Varshney 2009, 282). Therefore, along with ethnic lines, all scarce resourses arouse competition and

Analysis Of The Film Skyfall
Directed by Sam Mendes and shot by Roger Deakins, the movie Skyfall is a spy film in the James

Bond was going after Silva, Q was helping him along the way. In the end of the movie, James Bond
killed Silva by throwing a knife into the back in Scotland.
Personally speaking, I really like the movie. I am a fan of action movie, the fighting scenes in Skyfall
never fail to fascinate me. The most impressive fight scene to me was the train fight between James
Bond and Patrice. In the beginning of the scene, James Bond was going after Patrice. After a series of
gun firing, James Bond had to get close and catch Patrice. To reach the train where Patrice was on,
James Bond drove a digger and punched a hole in the train so that the arm of the digger became a
bridge to the train. The fight was absolutely intense. They fought on the top on a moving train where it
was challenging to keep balance. Every single grab, punch, kick, push was so real that you could tell
how intense the fight was. The facial expressions on their faces were highlighted by the close up shots.
The fight was impressive not just because of the physical movements between the two actors, but

Compare And Contrast Zheng He Voyages
Zheng He s voyages have been a constant source of controversy in the historical world because of the
differing opinions on whether they should be celebrated or not. In July of 1405, Zheng He was given
the task to lead a fleet of ships for exploration. This task was assigned to him by Emperor Yongle of
China s Ming Dynasty. Over the next twenty eight years, the Chinese Admiral, Zheng He went on
seven separate voyages through the Indian and Pacific Oceans with one of the largest fleet of wooden
ships in history. He navigated his massive fleet from Nanjing along the Chinese coast and through
these oceans to explore new lands and bring prosperity to China. The Chinese Emperor sent Zheng He
on these explorations to explore new lands, establish trade ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One goal of Zheng He s voyages was to establish trade relationships with new lands for China. Trade
was incredibly important during this time period and was one of the main causes of worldwide
exploration. However, Zheng He mistreated the native people he was meant to trade with, and being
harsh and using force leads to resentment and thus a lack of cooperation and aid from these people.
Emperor Yongle hadn t given Zheng He specified instructions to claim the land as China s and to force
the submission of the foreigners. The Changle Inscription, a carving made into a stone pillar in
Changle, China, described Zheng He s six voyages and the plans for his seventh voyage since it was
inscribed before he left. The Changle Inscription states that From the edge of the sky to the ends of the
earth there are none who have not become subjects and slaves [...] barbarian kings who resisted... we
captured alive and barbarian bandits who invaded and plundered we wiped out (Document E). Zheng
He s voyages resulted in the enslavement of the foreign people as he forced most of these people
under China s rule as subjects or slaves. Some of the people who showed signs of resistance, whether
it be a king fighting for his land or bandits who desired to steal goods and

Essay On Fiber Communication System
There are certain inherent flaws with the optical transmission system like inter symbol interference
and noise. This distortion is introduced by the narrow bandwidth and some distortions due to the
media through the optical signals travel. The linear transversal filter is used to reduce symbol
interference. The system designed to remove unknown distortion is called an adaptive equalizer. The
corrective measure is to identify the distortion and adjust accordingly with the objective to remove it.
The equalizer can be the supervised or unsupervised type. In the TV or radio Transmission, blind
equalizers are used. The literature survey of analysis of mean square error and space division
multiplexing technique and other system removing the ISI ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The equalizer converges to higher MSE. The noise PSD directed method iterated over 3000 km
transmission on all six modes and it tends to convergence at same MSE to get the standard 10 dB
normalized MSE (NMSE).The noise PSD directed algorithms require 47 blocks and the conventional
algorithm needs 48 blocks [6]. Sean O¨Arık et.al have proposed Long haul mode division
multiplexing (MDM) for adaptive multi input multi output (MIMO) equalization to reduce for modal
crosstalk and modal dispersion. To minimize computational complexity, use MIMO frequency domain
equalization (FDE).Polarization division multiplexing (PDM) system use single mode fiber but its
transmission effected by noise, fiber nonlinearity and dispersion. In multi mode fiber (MMF) with
multi input multi output (MIMO) transmission Increasing per fiber capacity can be achieved more
readily by increasing spatial dimensionality the total number of dimensions available for multiplexing,
including spatial and polarization degrees of freedom denoted by D. In first case two polarization
modes of single mode fiber using D=2. This is made possible by equalization techniques goes on
going up with the upward drift of D and higher group delay. In second case systems using
modedivision multiplexing (MDM) in MMFs (D 2) receiver, computational complexity increases
because of an increase in D and because of the large group delay (GD) spread

Refugee Challenges For Refugees
The current refugee scene is facing many complications. The challenges these individuals face while
moving to a new country has encouraged us to focus our project on providing refugees with the
assistance they need to succeed. Exploring different areas such as connections and services through an
interview process has given us a better insight into what path to take to better accommodate refugees
with the challenges in their current country. When conducting interviews our group kept in mind the
practicality of the refugee s situation. Since for many individuals, this time in their lives is emotional
we decided to reach out to the individuals that help refugees. When deciding who to contact for
interviews we kept all our options open, communicating with immigration officers, program
managers, University of Waterloo volunteers and teachers etc. First, we created a target list of many
individuals that we were interested to hear from. Our first point of contact was email, with some
participants they emailed their answers to us, however with others they preferred to communicate
through the phone. In the end, all of the interviews we collected were completed through phone calls
and emails. Our project is based around a relatively touchy subject because in many cases, refugees
have been forced from their country for their own safety. If people ask how life was like before and
what made them leave their home, they may feel uncomfortable and out of place like the new kid on

Aliens Vs Dwarf Planets
A dwarf planet is a celestial body which orbits around the sun. The body has to be large enough to
have its own gravity pull itself into a nearly round shape. Usually, a dwarf planet is called a minor
planet. The difference between a dwarf planet and a planet is that a dwarf planet s path around the sun
is full of other objects, while a planet has a clear path when it orbits around the sun. The term dwarf
planet was coined in 1981 by Alan Stern, an American Planetary scientist, and have gone through a
process of multiple draft proposals. Conversely, the final definition was set on August 24th, 2006. The
International Astronomical Union (IAU) settled that planets and dwarf planets are two distinct classes
of objects , meaning that dwarf

Ridley Scott s Use of Mise-en-Scene to Convey Atmosphere...
There was a dream that was Rome. You could only whisper it. Anything more than a whisper and it
would vanish, it was so fragile.
The film Gladiator was released in 2000. A thrilling action film, it was a huge success, scooping five
Oscars and earning over $427 million dollars. Sir Ridley Scott who directed the film already had many
great films to his name, such as Alien , Blade Runner and American Gangster , so it was no surprise
when this film became one of the highest earners of the year 2000. The mise en scene used throughout
was, perhaps, behind the genius that made this film as much of a success today as it was nine years
ago.
An example of this in the opening sequence is the music. Beginning calm and gently, the ... Show

There is a close up of his face, which allows the viewer to see every emotion, which adds an essence
of vulnerability to a character that is more often than not, perceived as the complete opposite. It is also
used to emphasise the fact that Maximus is the character the film will be based around. Following the
close up, there is a shot of a robin sitting on the branch of a tree, after a short while it flies away,
perhaps sensing danger. The shot is then back to Maximus, who is smiling sadly, possibly at the
thought of the robin being able to fly away from it all, when he can t. The way that mise en scene has
been used to depict a slight fear in the character of Maximus, adds contrast to his personality, which in
turn adds depth, leaving the audience feeling able to connect to him. The music in this scene makes it
almost haunting as it creates a calm yet uneasy atmosphere. Maximus is wearing gold in this which,
not only continues the theme of gold, but also represents his authority. The combination of this strong,
powerful figure being slightly fearful at what lies ahead, adds to the uneasy atmosphere. The lighting
in the sequence is also a lot darker than the previous which adds to the implication that the atmosphere
is about to change, this along with the non diegetic sounds like the wind blowing and the distant sound
of birds, help create a really dramatic, prominent sequence which leads on

  • 2. The First Day Of English Class I look the first debate judge in the eyes and he nods. Then my gaze drifts to the second one and she smiles. Finally I look to my right at my final judge, he simply winks at me. I close my eyes and count to three. It s finally time to begin; this is my time. These next three minutes everyone has to listen to me and my opinion. I open my mouth, but the only thought going through my head is, why? Why am I doing this? Why am I here? Why did I make this mistake? It was the first day of English class and the teacher asked, who here has ever given a class presentation before? I looked around hoping, praying, that someone else is like me. However fate was not on my side. Every hand in the class was proudly raised high and I was all alone on my little island of fear. The teacher looked directly at me and asked why I had not ever done a presentation. I m a clicker, I mumbled, it was barely audible but the teacher heard it and his face softened. Well Mr. Peschansky it s time you become a talker. A psychological study done in the early 70 s found that people are more afraid of public speaking then of death. Standing at the front of the room in my first debate tournament I realize just how true that is. All I can hear is my heart hammering away in my chest, my legs feel like they are going to give and I m shaking all over. I never opened my mouth when I was in grade school. I was the kid that was always reading. If my head was not buried in a book then something was probably ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. The Normative View Of Christianity Christianity is a widespread religion that reaches many different cultures and places all around the world. Since it is such a widespread religion there are many types of interpretations that can be developed based off the words and teachings of the Bible. Most commonly we have the normative view of Christianity. The normative view can most basically be understood as the highly shared teachings of churches. Another type of interpretation that encompasses all beliefs that are not compliant with the normative view is called esoteric. Here we will compare the interpretations of Daskalos, the Great Teacher of Cypress, and his Researchers of Truth against the normative view of Christianity as understood by both Catholics and Protestants. In order to further investigate the differences between Daskalos esoteric beliefs and normative beliefs we must understand fully what esoteric and normative truly mean. A few beliefs of normative Christianity, as explained by Moreman, are as follows: the belief in judgement after death. There are only 2 places to go, hell or heaven and that may or may not be after a slight stop in purgatory, the intermediate state of being right after death where souls await resurrection (Moreman, 62). When the resurrection happens, people will be resurrected in their physical bodies, thanks to interpretations by St. Augustine of Hippo (Moreman, 62). Those souls or people that are evil will spend eternity in hell in fiery damnation (Moreman, 63). The beliefs of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Comparing the Narrative and Formal Devices of ChungKing Express and A Bout de Souffle Wong Kar Wai s movie ChungKing Express bears many similarities to Godard s A Bout de Souffle . To start with, Wai employs a number of cinematic techniques, obviously derived from the French New Wave, such as for example the jump cut which is evidently taken from Godard s film. His use of the Godard ian jump cut seamlessly blends temporally exclusive scenes together, making the passage of time unnoticeable. Other Godard ian touches include the many shots of clocks, which remind the viewer that despite the protagonist s fixation on the past, time continues to move on and that moments in the present are ... The primary function of the traditional Hong Kong film industry was to churn out movies aimed at the general public and make sure that they bring in a profit. This is much like the French film industry was before the emergence of the French New Wave. However Wai s ChungKing Express was clearly not aimed at the masses, but rather only at the people who have developed a real understanding and appreciation for the art of film. Godard s A Bout de Souffle was also a film which was made to rebel against the old style of French cinema and break the conventions of the film industry. In this way, both of the film directors have something in common with each other. Much of Wai s work has included themes of time passing and how every human emotion, every material object or specifically tinned food expires. This reoccurring matter isn t simply an accident but it carries a very significant political message. At the time that Wai made ChungKing Express , Hong Kong was pending to be handed over from the British democratic powers, to the Chinese communist government. This period was very turbulent for the Hong Kong people as they were in anticipation of a great change, but they didn t know whether it would be negative or positive. ... Essay on Swifts Powerful Message in A Modest Proposal Swifts Powerful Message in A Modest Proposal In the Holy Bible, Jesus Christ states that there will always be poor, pathetic, struggling masses and nothing we can do will ever completely eliminate this element. In A Modest Proposal, the narrator expresses pity for the poor, but at the same time he strives to maintain his social dominance over them. The majority of the animation is the story of Marjane s life in the past so it is in mostly black and white. This is an interesting way of using color because in a way color is used as a form of timeline, there are parts of the animation that switch from present to past, so Satrapi just switches from black and white to color to show time period. The children received a low level of education, as they were expected to work as manual labourers and domestic servants (J). His essays were mostly of racial, sexual, and class distinctions in Western societies, mostly in mid 20th century America. Some of Baldwin s essays are book length, for instance The Fire Next Time (1963), No Name in the Street (1972), and The Devil Finds Work (1976). An unfinished manuscript, Remember This House, was expanded upon and adapted for cinema as the Academy Award nominated documentary film I Am Not Your Negro. Writer and playwright James Baldwin was born August 2, 1924, in Harlem, New York. One of the 20th century s greatest writers, Baldwin broke new literary ground with the exploration of racial and social issues in his many works. He was especially well known for his essays on the black experience in America. Baldwin was born to a young single mother, Emma Jones, at Harlem Hospital. She reportedly never told him the name of his biological father. Jones married a Baptist minister named David Baldwin when James was about three years old. Despite their strained relationship, he followed in his stepfather s footsteps who he always referred to as his father during his early teen years. He served as a youth minister in a Harlem Pentecostal church from the ages of 14 to 16. Baldwin developed a passion for reading at an early age, and demonstrated a gift for writing during his school years. • 29. Death Be Not Proud By John Donne The progression of societal beliefs regarding our approach towards death is dependent upon the changing nature of both cultural and historical contexts. In Donne s Holy Sonnet Death be not proud he uses second person narration to address Death as thou , thee and thy , death is not considered conceptually but anthropomorphised as the poems fundamental pride. In Death be not proud , we see how the rumination of death is shaped by Elizabethan values. Through the subverted Petrarchan structure and style, Donne s use of apostrophe denigrates the omnipotence of death and lowers its statue to the level of the poet. This corresponds with contextual religious values of certainty in external afterlife and death as a transitory stage. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Vivian s reversion to the punctuation, Death semicolon thou shalt die, is symbolic of the 1990s literature culture wars, as Edson argues that a personal interpretation of the text is crucial to understanding its virtues. This is seen as Donne s religious context only saw a mere pause, comma, between life and eternal life, whereas, modern existential beliefs see this transition as more potent and vivid, semicolon. This uncertainty can be seen through the final stage directions, the instant she is naked and beautiful, reaching for the light, which symbolises purity, peacefulness and hope. Therefore, we see the modern context produce an uncertain, yet uplifting approach to death. Donne s poem, The Sunne Rising, expounds how his view of life is shaped by relationships. We see this as the poet defies the natural order by apostrophising the Sun, Busie old foole. In Donne s context, the Sun was seen as the centre of the natural world and the source of energy and life. Donne s irritated, jesting tone denounces the Sun s power when compared with his lover. This is seen through the metaphorical description, This bed thy centre is, these walls, thy sphere, which extrapolates the apotheosistic nature of his relationship, and is ... First of all, there was a Great Fire of Rome that started in 64 AD, and Emperor Nero blamed the Christians for this horrible disaster. We d have been beaten if it hadn t been for him (p.195). Aslan, the lion king epitomizes the greatness of Narnia and the creatures that it inhabits. Aslan tells his brother and sisters, Here is your brother and there is no need to talk to him about what is past (p.153). • 33. The Role Of The Perfect Utopian Society In George Orwell s... What makes a good life for individuals and what constitutes the perfect utopian society? These are important questions for all humans living in the modern world and the answers to these questions radically affect the way that we view how power should be used. In George Orwell s Animal Farm, we see the animals come out from under Mr Jones power, they try to make the perfect world but fail because someone is always going to have the strength or willpower to go one step further than you can. In The Truman Show, directed by Peter Weir, we see Christof try to create his idea of the perfect world so that at least one person, Truman Burbank, might be able to live a good life. Both texts suggest that the good life is determined by the degree of freedom that they have to choose their own destiny and this then affects what the perfect society looks like because the perfect society would involve ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to live out what they consider to be a good life. The problem with trying to create a perfect society is that there will always be someone who uses their power to control others for the bad, not the good. The capacity for an individual to live a good life is dependent upon the degree of freedom that they have to choose their own destiny. In The Truman Show, Weir suggests that without freedom one cannot be truly happy. Many of them believe the best years (in terms of society) are behind them (Howe and Strauss 1993). They have been told that they are the only generation since the Civil War to come of age unlikely to match their parents economic fortunes (ibid., p. 7). They place little faith in job security. They saw their parents laid off without cause and their perceptions of the working world were shaped in time of economic turmoil. Consequently, they tend to see every job they take as temporary and every company as a stepping stone to something better, or at least to something else (Filipczak 1994, p. 23). Since they have adopted the philosophy that there are no guarantees, they are not interested in working their way up. They want to be valued immediately for their skills (Bradford and Raines 1992). They see their career strength in their ability to solve problems and do jobs that others are not able to do. They believe that security nowadays comes from the transferability of one s skills to other jobs rather than from advancement in hierarchically managed organizations (Wilkinson 1995, p. 67). They use job hopping as a way to build their skills and make themselves more marketable (Filipczak 1994, p. 27). Although individuals in Generation X may be cynical, they do not lack drive. They ... • 38. The Instrumentalist Theory Of Ethnic Conflict In Aceh For instrumentalists, resource, especial the scarce resource, always being an important factor of ethnic conflicts. Lake and Rothchild stand on the strand of rational choice, they assume that scarce resources related to the collective fear of the future, and politics are means for groups to control the access to scarce resources. For instrumentalists, ethnic identity is not valuable in and of itself, it is basically a mask for a core of real interests (Varshney 2009, 288). The case of conflicts in Aceh approave this assertion that competition for resources typically lies at the heart of ethnic conflict. Therefore, this short answer will be two fold: first, a critical understanding of instrumantalism will be provided in order to illustrate why resources are important? Second, a case of Aceh will be explained along with the instrumentalism. In the article Containing Fear: The Origins and Management of Ethnic Conflict, Lake and Rothchild sited that the intense ethnic conflict is most often caused by collective fear of the future (Lake and Rothchild 1996, 41). Their explanatory framework is rational choice oriented which based on the instrumentalist theory of ethnic conflict. For instrumentalists, ethnicity mask a deeper core of interests (Varshney 2009, 282). Roger Deakins is an English cinematographer. As a successful cinematographer, he is well known for his film work with the directors, such as Coens brothers, Sam Mendes, and Denis Villeneuve. Being a member of both the American and British Society of Cinematographers, Roger Deakins has received thirteen nominations for the Academy Awards for Best Cinematography. In the film Skyfall, Roger Deakins played the role of lead cinematographer and worked along with his old crew members. The movie Skyfall depicts the story about James Bond investigating on an attack on the British Secret Intelligence Services, M16. Raoul Silva, who was the former M16 agent, schemed and planned this attack. M sent James Bond to Shanghai and Macau to find and kill Silva. During the time when James Bond was going after Silva, Q was helping him along the way. In the end of the movie, James Bond killed Silva by throwing a knife into the back in Scotland. The most impressive fight scene to me was the train fight between James Bond and Patrice. In the beginning of the scene, James Bond was going after Patrice. After a series of gun firing, James Bond had to get close and catch Patrice. To reach the train where Patrice was on, James Bond drove a digger and punched a hole in the train so that the arm of the digger became a bridge to the train. The fight was absolutely intense. They fought on the top on a moving train where it was challenging to keep balance. Every single grab, punch, kick, push was so real that you could tell how intense the fight was.
