The Supreme Court And The Sexual Revolution
Griswold v. Connecticut, 381 U.S. 479 (1965). Ibid.
Buckley, Jr., William F. Crucial Steps in Combating the Aids Epidemic; Identify All the Carriers. New
York Times: 18 March 1986. Bowers v. Hardwick 478 U.S. 186 (1986).
Ideas about sex, gender and homosexuality have been changing rapidly over the past several decades
in the United States. There are several obvious reasons for this. The primary one is legal: various legal
decisions by the United States Supreme Court have altered existing law on the subject of sex and
homosexuality, and substantially affected matters of gender as expressed in law. But there has also
been a social shift driven by medicine, largely based on response to the AIDS epidemic at its height in
the 1980s and 1990s, but also in terms of other medical matters such as contraception and abortion.
To a certain degree, seeing how these matters have progressed since the 1960s gives a good vantage to
predicting where they will go in the future. In conclusion, I will look at the future of change on these
matters, by examining what seems to be the avant garde regarding matters of sex and gender, the
phenomenon of transsexualism. I hope an examination of transsexualism will point out some of the
contradictions that still continue to exist in American ideas about matters of sex. We are accustomed to
referring to a sexual revolution in the 1960s, but the actual consequences of that social shift were
necessarily reflected in the law. To a

Techniques of Suffragists and Suffragettes
Describe the ways in which the methods of the suffragists and suffragettes were different. Women
started campaigning to win the vote in the 1850 s. Small local groups had meetings nationwide to
present their arguement for allowing women to vote. In 1877 78 there were 1,300 meetings this
represents how serious the women were. The campaigners were mainly middle class, as, upper class
ladies most propably found campaigning and argueing unlady like and inappropriate. However this
does not mean they they too did not want the right to vote. The campaigners were known as The
NUWSS (Suffragists) and were formed in 1897 by Millicent Garrett Fawcet who, was finally
rewarded when she saw, 60 years later, women recieving the vote. They ... Show more content on

As the years rolled on the fight for enfranchisement grew more heated. Suffragette protests gradually
became more violent. The WSPU began to drift away from the leaflet and tea party tactics used by the
NUWSS. In November 1911 the Concillation Bill was dropped. The supporters of womens suffrage
were incensed. They organised window smashing across central London, leaders were imprsioned,
once an axe was thown at Prime Minister Asquith narrowly missng him. The Prime Minister was
against womens suffrage, and this violence casued by the suffragettes gave him the perfect excuse not
to give in argueing that if he gave in, it would encourage other groups to do the same. This in some
aspects is true, in today s society if groups of people have a belief they protest! Some violently and
some peacefully (such as Martin Luther Kings followers) whether or not these peopleare now inspired
by the suffragettes is unknown. One of the biggest differences in methods between the Suffragists and
the Suffragettes was the role of the media within their campaigns. The new WSPU protesting methods
involved smashing windows, breaking street lamps and arson e.g. 2nd June 1913 post boxes in
Lesham were set on fire. All these methods suggest a need to leave behind a mark, something physical
an powerful. Images of the damages flooded the media and forced people to address why the
suffragettes had gone to these

Pros And Cons Of The Scottish Independence Movement
JB Ladera/7 The Scottish Independence Movement is a major controversy in Europe as it can lead to
good or bad outcomes to those involved with it. Both sides, for independence and against
independence, all have their own perspective on the situation, and try to decide the best for the future
of Scotland. Scotland wants to become independent from the United Kingdom (UK). This decision
could heavily affect their economy and government by having both positive and negative impacts.
Their reason for wanting to leave is because the majority of the United Kingdom voted to leave the
European Union while Scotland did not. Scotland has made voting polls and the two sides of the poll,
the supporters and the critics, are not far from each other. Scotland

Terror Management Theory
Introduction Psych 317
As humans, we are unique from animals in many ways. We have an internal guidance system called a
conscience that allows us to think and act in a way close to our deepest values. We have an
independent will that does not allow genetic influences or the environment to dictate our actions. We
have an infinite creative imagination that allows us to create beyond our reality but perhaps the most
uniquely human endowment we all possess is self awareness. Self awareness is the recognition of how
we feel and how we behave. It also allows us to examine why we exist and ultimately, that we are
going to die. While self preservation is a characteristic to both humans and animals, the understanding

While this study suggests that there is no need to be around similar people during times of
vulnerability, the researchers recognize that the individuals in these groups were mere observers and
not actually interacting with each other.
Another hypothesis that emerged from TMT research is the anxiety buffer hypothesis. This hypothesis
stresses the importance of high self esteem and how it can shield individuals from experiencing death
anxiety. Individuals with high self esteem feel that they are an ideal example of their culture and enjoy
the protection from the mortality concerns that their culture offers (Hirschberger et al., 2002).
Studies that exemplify the anxiety buffer hypothesis are those that link TMT and risky sexual
behaviors. In a 2004 study, researchers noted that by making mortality salient, a willingness to engage
in life threatening behaviors, such as unsafe sex, was reported (Orit Taubman, Ben Ari). This study
suggests that engaging in risky sex represents two facets of vulnerability related to the threat of death.
One is the absolute fear or extermination which is associated to having the risky sex and the other is
the need to love and have intimacy, a uniquely human trait that is related to self esteem. Basically,
when faced with mortality, humans yearn to fulfill their basic needs of love, even if that means risking
life itself (Orit Taubman,

Examples Of Diction In Night By Elie Wiesel
Night by Elie Wiesel is an autobiography about his experience during the Holocaust when he was
fifteen years old. Elie is fifteen when the tragedy begins. He is taken with his family through many
trials and then is separated from everyone besides his father. They are left with only each other, of
which they are able to confide in and look to for support. The story is told through a series of creative
writing practices. Mr. Wiesel uses strong diction, and syntax as well as a combination of stylistic
devices. This autobiography allows the readers to understand a personal, first hand account of the
terrible events of the holocaust. The ways that diction is used in Night helps with this understanding.
Elie Wiesel uses words that are relevant ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Never shall I forget that smoke.
Never shall I forget the small faces of the children whose bodies I saw transformed into smoke under a
silent sky.
Never shall I forget those flames that consumed my faith forever.
Never shall I forget those moments that murdered my God and my soul and turned my dreams into
ashes.Never shall I forget these things, even were I condemned to live as long as God himself.
Never. (page 34)
Elie Wiesel has experienced a horrible tragedy. When he repeatedly says over and over Never shall I
forget... he emphasizes his fear of what he has seen. He drills into the reader how traumatized he is.
This creates sympathy and makes the reader feel worse for Mr. Wiesel. Dramatic irony gives the
reader an advantage over the characters. This form of irony is where the reader knows something that
the characters do not. (Poor father! Of what then did you die?) (page 11) During this scene in the book
Elie s father has given the news to the other Jews that they are all required to wear the yellow star. His
father said The yellow star? So what? It s not lethal... (page 11) This is ironic because the star is what
killed nearly all of the Jewish people. Hate killed a countless number of innocent people because of
their beliefs. This is the dramatic Irony. Everything that Elie Wiesel uses to create his autobiography
makes it more that just a page taught

Hymn To Aten And Enuma Elis
The creation of the Earth, human beings, and all that is existent and nonexistent is a topic that has
been discussed and pondered as long as time itself. Cosmologies may contrast greatly from region to
region, while some cultures beliefs run parallel to each other. The Babylonian creation myth detailed
in the Enuma Elis and one of the Egyptian creation myths narrated in the Hymn to Aten outline the
culture s own religious answer to the working of the universe. The Enuma Elis follows the story of
multiple gods that, when working with and working against each other, create a greater being which
ultimately creates human life. The Egyptian Hymn to Aten depicts the power of their god and the
nature in which their Earth exists. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These opinionated acts of the gods causes them to appear subject to bias and irrationality; both of
which instill harsh traits which cause the gods to be beings worthy of fear in the eyes of mankind.
The Egyptian pharaoh Akhenaten depicts his own beliefs on the nature of divinity in his writing of the
Hymn to Aten. Egyptian ideology, previous based around multiple gods, became monotheistic under
the rule of Akhenaten. He wrote the hymn to express Aten as the sole God without equal who created
all that exists (NYU Classes). Aten created life and controls life in this Egyptian creation myth, and
his divinity is one that adheres to a cyclical nature of life and death. He gives his people the things
they need while also caring for the animals. The speaker s voice in the hymn illuminates the greatness
of Aten as each line is one of adoration and amazement. Aten is depicted as beauteous, mighty and
radiant as he lights and warms the Earth for mankind, further reinforcing the immense devotion the
speaker has for their god (NYU Classes). This level of love for Aten shows he is a good natured god
with good intentions for his people.
As multiple gods exist, conflicts and distinct traits also exist. This truth is seen clearly in the contrast
between Aten and the Babylonian gods. Aten is characterized as an exceptionally calm and caring god,
and as he is never seen in a situation where he needs to defend himself, this inherently good nature is
consistent. On the

The Impact Of Volunteering
INTRODUCTION ATTENTION STATEMENT: Volunteering behaviour has been a powerful driving
force in the betterment of humanity, a key contributor to the solving of mankind s problems (de Abreu,
2015). as stated in a scholarly article, Managing Volunteerism Behaviour. Volunteering has been
proven to be one of the most important things in our lives.
PERSONAL/AUDIENCE LINK: When our eldest deaf child was born 7 years ago, volunteering has
been our thing ever since, especially for the Deaf community. What a difference it has made for us and
the community. It helps create warmth and excitement to all of us.

BODY
MAIN POINT #1: Definition
Volunteering is time willingly given for the common good and without financial gain.
(www.volunteeringaustralia.org, n.d.) .
Volunteering should not be used as profit, or be used to replace paid employees.
Activism can be considered volunteering. This definition is aligned to the current UN position on
volunteering... (www.volunteeringaustralia.org, n.d.) as stated in their website.
MAIN POINT #2: Benefits
We as volunteers will be assisting in finding ways for the organization to fulfill its mission. We all get
to learn new things everyday from volunteering.
Here are some examples of volunteering work I have done in the past.
I was a co chair for Rocky Mountain Deaf School building committee. Couple of volunteers and I
participated in a peaceful activism involving a property for the new school building. There was a
protest from the neighbors opposing the deaf school on the property. If our activism didn t happen, we
wouldn t build our school building on our current property

Innate Sexual Identity
I believe people are born with an innate sexual identity that they can not change. I base this belief on
books and articles of scientific research that I have read over the years. However, I believe many
individuals lie to themselves and/or to others about their sexual identity due to social pressures.
I believe that many parents who disrespect homosexuals, bisexuals, and transgendered people openly
in front of their children may trigger the children into repressing their sexual identities. As an
example, if a homosexual child were born into a family who does not approve of homosexuality he or
she may be inclined to pretend to be heterosexual. I believe many individuals even get married and
have children with opposite sex partners, while denying

The Elements Of Contraction For The Required Building Of...
1 Executive Summary
2 Introduction
The project details the elements of contraction for the required building of Hall for Cornwall. The
requirements include preparation of feasibility report, which is based on the further improvement of
the existing building of Hall for Cornwall. This feasibility report is based on two schemes, which
means rather than only one, two options are provided to the client. Along with the feasibility report,
the financial appraisal and the development design for both the schemes are also provided. As
provided in the assessment the Client is open minded, as to the use, budget and construction time but
expected value for money and a return on their investment, which would be provided in accordance to
their consistency with the derailed contraction process.
3 Clients Initial Brief
The client, Hall for Cornwall requires an extension and transformation of the existing building of Hall
for Cornwall. This extension would be projected to the building of a new theatre, based on classical
three tiers and located at the centre of Truro s City Hall. The report made for this purpose requires to
be maintaining an effective feasibility report for the project, hereby, the client expects two choices or
in other words, two schemes of plan in order to ensure that if one fails then the other one could be
used. Moreover, the financial appraisal of all the processes that would be undergone in both of these
schemes is also required to be included in this project. The

Tesco deploys its strategies based on 5 elements: international retailing, growing its core UK business,
growing in the food as well as non food sector, developing retail services, and considering the
community as the heart of its operations. The 5th element was added recently in 2007 (Tesco, 2010).
Over the years Tesco has seen growth and consistency in sales and profits. They credit their
management team, their strategy to invest in their employees as their catalyst in being successful.
In 1985, Tesco announced the operations of its 100th superstore and in the following year it
announced its plan to invest £500 million in starting 29 more stores (Corporate Watch, 2004). The
beginning of the next decade saw Tesco basking on the success of its petrol filling stations to become
UK s largest private petrol retailer (Corporate Watch, 2004). The company introduced the idea of
developing new and different store concepts and better customer centric initiatives. In 1995 Tesco
introduced a revolution in the food retailing market, the Tesco club (loyalty) card, which provided
offers and other benefits to customers and also helping the company learn more about its customer s
shopping patterns and needs (Cheffey Smith, 2010). Other customer centric services included: Tesco

Symbolism In Midsummer Night s Dream By William Shakespeare
Midnights Summer Run A Critical Analysis
In the famous comedy Midsummer Night s Dream by William Shakespeare s there are a variety of
symbols, allusions, imagery and dramatic irony displayed throughout the whole play. Many pictures
are able to depict these attributes also and are displayed within the power point.
To begin with, I chose the following quotes and scenes to shown the symbolism in Midnights Summer
Run for the following reasons. When Puck fetches a pansy other wise known as Cupid s flower so that
Oberon can use its magic juice to make his victims fall head over heels in love with others. Oberon
responds by saying The juice of it on sleeping eye lids laid. Will make or man or woman madly dote.
Upon the next live creature that it sees (2.1.170 172). I chose this quote because it the juice s fast
acting power seems to be symbolizing what often happens in everyday life. As every teenager and
even adult know, love can be unpredictable and inexplicable. Therefore, making it a perfect symbol of
how crazy love can truly be, no matter how much one tries to control or change it love seems to find
and follow its own destiny despite others wishes for it.
As mentioned in the collage, symbols provide a great key to understanding the play and offer insight
to the commentary. When the quote Will make or man or woman madly dote he says, upon the next
live creature that it sees (2.1.170 172). The stuff used is successful and it creates several problems for

External, Internal, and Construct Validity Essay
Validity pertains to both the methods and the design of a research study and indicates the degree with
which correct inferences can be made from the results of a research study (Indiana University Of
Pennsylvania, 2010). According to Trochim and Donnelly, there are four types of validity including
conclusion, internal, construct, and external (2008). In this assignment, three of these types will be
discussed. Internal validity is the extent to which a test measures what it claims to measure. External
validity on the other hand, is the extent to which the results of a research study can be generalized to
other groups, other times, and other settings. Construct validity demonstrates an association between
results and the prediction of a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Instrumentation is concerned a lack of consistency in the measuring instrument that could account for
invalid results of a research study. This threat is most likely to occur when two different forms are
used for the pre and post tests or if the instrument is constructed poorly. (Creswell, 2009).
Mortality can occur if research participants drop out of the study before completion. This problem is
more likely to occur if participants are volunteers or if the sample group is too small (Creswell, 2009).
Statistical regression is the tendency of participants who score high on a pretest to score lower (or
closer to the mean) on the posttest and consequently, participants who score low on a pretest tend to
score higher on the posttest. This regression may significantly influence the distribution of scores.
Finally, differential selection can occur if already formed groups are used in a study as the groups may
have had existing differences from the beginning. For example, the subjects in each group may have
extreme age differences or educational backgrounds. As a result, any differences found at the posttest
may be due to these differential selection differences rather than being due to the independent
variable. External validity is the degree to which the results of a research study can be generalized to
and across other populations, settings, times and tasks. The threats to external validity compromise a

The Beauty of Nature Essay examples
The Beauty of Nature
The sunset was not spectacular that day. The vivid ruby and tangerine streaks that so often caressed
the blue brow of the sky were sleeping, hidden behind the heavy mists. There are some days when the
sunlight seems to dance, to weave and frolic with tongues of fire between the blades of grass. Not on
that day. That evening, the yellow light was sickly. It diffused softly through the gray curtains with a
shrouded light that just failed to illuminate. High up in the treetops, the leaves swayed, but on the

The bees still buzzed and hummed among the flowers; the deer still grazed softly among the
undulating waves of grass, yet in that moment, their movement seemed arrested, held in check by the
waning sun.
And the winds came.
The wild west wind came down through the fields, rousing the deer from their reverie, and swaying
the bee studded flowers. From its highest bough to the loose sand on its mighty roots, the ancient tree
quivered lightly, yet was untroubled by the breeze. Many a storm had passed over the tree, yet no rain
had managed to drown those fathomless roots, no hail had managed to bite the iron bark.
As the stars hang, unchanging in the nighttime sky, and as the sun moves in ceaseless circles around
the earth, so the tree had endured. And even as the wind rustled in its outermost boughs, the tree
looked out to the sun, as if for reassurance about its own unchanging eternity. On the horizon, no
yellow eye looked back. The sun was gone.
In a tumult of wind and rain, a hail of twigs and leaves thundered through the trees and tore the
arching grasses out by the roots. The deer bolted and hid, quivering, in the darkest thickets. The sky
boiled, and the younger saplings were bent almost to the ground. Even as the shadows bounded up the
stalks and blades of weeping grass, and the soft plink of falling rain quickened to a constant hiss and
sputter, the sun found its equal. A thousand stars came down to earth and unleashed their pent up fury
on that wood.

Animals Short Term Memory
Animal cognition or comparative cognition s major purpose is to compare the cognitive processes of
different species, including humans. By making such comparisons, researchers hope to find
commonalities in the ways different species receive, process, store, and use information about their
world (Mazur, 2013, p.225). Animals short term memory also known as working memory is different
for different animals based on if they use retrospective coding or prospective coding. For example in
short term memory experiments with pigeons researchers found that they use prospective coding with
is the ability to look forward such as if I hit this key then this key I will be rewarded with a food pellet
according to Mazur (2013). Long term memory are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, there are many ways that animals are able to learn to communicate such as the experiment
by Allen and Beatrice Garner who used American Sign Language to teach a chimpanzee to sign a
couple hundred words including the ability to put certain combinations according to Mazur (2013).
During this experiment the chimpanzee, Washoe, learned to put word combinations together however,
Washoe was unable to master grammar but the result was still effective in her ability to get across her
needs or wants. David Premack (1971b, 1983) improved this research by teaching his chimpanzee,
Sarah, to use colored magnetic shapes to form sentences. This started small and simple and gradually
they were able to get Sarah to put together quite complex sentences based on a technique called one to
one substitution according to Mazur (2013). This is accomplished by using the same sentence with
only a one word change from sentence to sentence once this is accomplished they are able to change
another word and so on until Sarah was able to master several complex sentences including grammar,
concepts, and plurals according to Mazur

Infrastructure Of Infrastructure And Infrastructure
Infrastructure
We are constantly surrounded by infrastructure assets. Infrastructure consists of all the assets that
countries require to enable its daily operations and orderly functions. Transportation, energy,
communications and water, are some of the infrastructure assets that serve as the backbone to our
society. While traveling this summer with my family, I realized just how far behind the U.S. is
compared to other parts of the world when it is considered one of the most advanced countries in the
world. I thought to myself... Why hasn t the U.S. invested in such projects? China spends 7% of its
GDP on infrastructure and India spends 5%. The U.S. spends just over 3%. As a result, U.S.
infrastructure now ranks 14th globally according to the World Economic Forum s infrastructure index.
In the current economic environment where interest rates are low and unemployment remains
elevated, a logical solution to stimulate growth would be to build, modernize, or replace our
infrastructure. Every 4 years, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) releases a Report Card
for America s Infrastructure that represents the condition and performance of the nation s
infrastructure. In 2013, the United States infrastructure grade was a D+. Although we recognize the
report is a little self serving, the statistics behind their research is compelling. According to the report:
the average age of the 84,000 dams in the country is 52 years old, one in nine of the nation s bridges

Describe The Importance Of The Colosseum
The Colosseum
Koch, Matt
Do you know what one of the most important structures to mankind history is? The Colosseum. The
importance of the Colosseum, otherwise known originally as the Flavian Amphitheatre, was that many
of the materials, styles, and architecture were inspiring to many architects and designers constructing
today s modern facilities and structures.
The emperor of Rome at the time, Vespasian, began building the Colosseum (Flavian Amphitheatre) in
72 AD. They believed that in ancient Rome the patron was more noble and loyal than the architects,
and the architects were just craftsmen and hired hands (Woog, 2014). So as of today the designers and
architects are unknown to the world, and will probably never be found out about because if limited
evidence. Floor plans, 3 dimensional scale models, perspective drawings, and full size design sketches
are what were used by the anonymous architects and designers of the Colosseum (Hopkins, 2011). The
site of construction was formerly known as the Golden House, owned and lived in by Nero the
Emperor. This was drained and as a precaution against potential earthquake damage concrete
foundations six metres deep were put down to support it (Cartwright, 2012). And eight long years of
hard work and design later the Colosseum (Flavian Amphitheatre) was completed in 80 CE.
There were many materials mixed in the project of constructing the Colosseum (Flavian
Amphitheatre). The walls of the Colosseum were built with stone. They made use of a number of
arches in order to keep the weight down, but yet still keep them strong (Cartwright, 2012). The floor
of the Colosseum was wooden and usually covered in sand most of the time. But the floor was taken
out due to heavy weathering in 1674 AD. And about 19 miles outside of Rome in a little town of
Tivoli were quarries where the Romans mined there stone blocks out of to construct the walls of the
Colosseum. Some other material they had used to construct the colosseum include, limestone brick,
concrete and volcanic stone (otherwise known as tufa ), pumice stone. And including bronze, which
was used for statues around the stadium. But some parts of the colosseum that are made of concrete
are not authentic original to the

A Tale of Two Cities, A Doll s House, Brave New World
J.M. Barrie once wrote, You can have anything in life if you will sacrifice everything else for it.
Throughout this semester, the most prevalent subject that has continuously risen from conversation is
that of sacrifice. Through the three books read in class, A Tale of Two Cities, A Doll s House, and
Brave New World, one can learn that sacrifice is not a selfless thing, but a necessary part of life when
attaining something he or she feels is of greater value. In A Tale of Two Cities, written by Charles
Dickens, Sydney Carton is introduced as a lethargic alcoholic that has little interest in living. As the
story progresses, however, Dickens shows Sydney s interest in another character named Lucie. Later,
Sydney even announces his love to her before she weds another man, Charles Darnay, yet he still
continues to speak of the worthlessness of his life as the story continues. It becomes very obvious to
the reader that Lucie is the focal point of Sydney s life, and that he lives primarily in the light of her
happiness. Towards the end of the novel, Darnay is in prison and soon facing the guillotine. Sydney,
who looks stunningly similar to Darnay, takes his place and dies to ensure Lucie s happiness with
Darnay in their future. From the time he announced his love to Lucie until his death, Sydney showed
his passionate interest and care for Lucie while showing apathy for his own life. It is clear that Sydney
valued Lucie and her happiness more than his own life. Therefore, by

Tthe Role of Amoeba in Human Disease
Review the Role of Amoeba in Human Disease
Introduction
Free living amoebae (FLA) are eukaryotic organism found ubiquitously in nature. They are found in
soil (dust), air, water and air, which provide amoeba multiple opportunities to spread (c). These can be
pathogenic or non pathogenic. Pathogenic FLA can invade and cause opportunistic and non
opportunistic infections in humans, which are found in the genus Acanthamoeba, Balamuthia
mandrillaris, Naegleria fowleri, and Sappinia pedata (b). Hartmannella is a genus of amoeba which is
in water systems of drinking water, cooling towers and hospitals. They are capable of harbouring
micro organisms like bacteria or pathogenic yeasts. This helps the micro organisms to develop and
spread (d) (e). Discussion
In Mexico city, in a survey looking at pathogenic and FLA inhabiting swimming pool water it was
found that the most and least common species of amoeba was Naegleria gruberi Schardinger (
59.02%) , Naegleria fowleri (16.77%), Acanthamoeba castellanii (7.64%) and Thecamoeba verrucosa
(0.12%). (a)
Naegleria has 30 different species.Naegleria Fowleri species is a thermo tolerant ameobaflagellate,
which causes primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) that affects the Central Nervous System
(CNS). Children and young adults exposed to polluted fresh water after 1 to 2 days experience PAM.

Since the use of a dictionary has been associated with...
Since the use of a dictionary has been associated with negative views among teachers and educators,
there is relatively little body of researches in regard to its impact on L2 acquisition. Many teachers
argue that the use of the dictionary while reading may divert students attention to an individual word
instead of understanding the text as a whole; thus, hinder the comprehension process (knight, 1994).
The top communicative approach that advocates implicit vocabulary learning was dominant in the
1970s and 1980s which led many educators to discourage the frequent use of dictionary and pay more
attention to guessing word meaning from context (Sökmen, 1997). However, there are many
limitations to employ merely the guessing strategy. As ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is important to have a look at the information provided by a typical dictionary in order to recognize
the potential effectiveness of dictionaries in enhancing vocabulary acquisition. In most dictionaries, a
typical word entry includes: meaning, grammar, usage, history, status, synonym, discrimination,
application of derivative affixes, details of the parts of speech, indications of style and register,
pronunciation, the origin of the word, labels to indicate the field in which the word is commonly used,
gender of words, verb conjugations, common expressions, idioms and abbreviations. Marckwardt
(1973) believes that the information supplied by dictionaries about the language can not be found
elsewhere. Taking into consideration the valuable information supplied by dictionaries, the significant
role of the dictionary in developing the process of learning vocabulary can not be denied. In recent
years, dictionary use has relatively become a topic of research interest. For example, Summers (1988)
reported the results of three experiments done on the effectiveness of the use of the dictionary in
reading comprehension and vocabulary learning. The first two experiments focused on reading
comprehension and found that comprehension was significantly

Oracle Of Delphi To Chaerephon About Socrates
Study Question One: What is the message from the Oracle of Delphi to Chaerephon about Socrates?
Early in Socrates testimony he refers to a witness by the name Chaerephon, he is described as an early
friend of Socrates and to all those present at the trial. It is mentioned that he was exiled; however, he
returned. According to Socrates, Chaerephon acted in a rash manner; thus, Chaerephon boldly asks the
oracle of Delphi whether any man is wiser than Socrates. The Oracle of Delphi, also known as the
Pythian prophetess, responded saying there was no man wiser (Pojman and Vaughn). We then learn
that Chaerephon was dead, but his brother, who was present in court, could testify in support of the
claim.

I think of arrogance as excessive pride or dramatization with one s own achievements. The only
blatant case of arrogance to me is when he proposes maintenance in the Prytaneum to be a just return
(Pojman and Vaughn). Looking more into the Prytaneum, I found this is where victorious Olympic
athletes ate for free; for Socrates to say he deserves free meals for the rest of his life does sound
conceited. This feeling must have been shared by the jury, by comparing the first vote, determining if
he was guilty, to the second vote, which determined his punishment, nearly 80 of those who voted for
him to be not guilty supported the death penalty shortly after he made that remark. It s hard to say if
he was serious though, all we get is a synopsis, his gesticulations could have indicated that he was
trying to lighten up the atmosphere with a joke. Some may consider the anecdote about him finding
out he was the wisest man alive from the God of Delphi to be arrogant; however, he wasn t the one
who seeked the answer, it was his friend Chaerephon. Moreover, he was skeptical to find out that was
the case, so he immediately set out to provide counter evidence to the Oracle. Lastly, emphatically
advocating to reproach those who pretend to know something when they know nothing makes it hard
to say he was arrogant; I see his behavior as a healthy skeptic who was hungry for the truth. The death
penalty was absolutely unnecessary; unfortunately, he had more enemies in the jury than friends. As
history shows unconventional views are generally suppressed by those with a vested interest, those
who brought charges against him along with his other enemies enjoyed the superior social status that
came with inflating one s wisdom, and

The Hardware Setup Of Dfig System Essay
Experimental Setup Introduction
This chapter explores the hardware setup of DFIG system. It also shows experimental results and the
performance of this system under different types of controllers. The experimental work is divided into
three parts. The first part is emulating the wind turbine characteristic using PMSM. The second part is
implementing the GSC connected to the grid and maintaining its DC link voltage constant under
different disturbances. The final part is controlling the DFIG to extract power from the wind emulator
and transfer it to the utility grid. General Hardware Overview
The simulation results illustrated in the previous chapter is experimentally verified in this chapter. To
achieve this objective, a hardware wind turbine emulator is built in the laboratory and the DFIG
system control is implemented to extract power from the wind emulator. Figure 5.1 and Figure 5. 2
show an overview of the DFIG WECS setup. The system comprises the following: A wound rotor
doubly fed induction machine. The stator of this machine is connected to the electrical grid directly.
Rotor side converter which is PWM three phase converter connected to the machine rotor terminals.
This control of this converter has two tasks as follows: Control the rotor current which means control
the stator currents as illustrated in chapter 3. Extract maximum power from wind turbine emulation
system. Grid side converter which is PWM three phase converter connected to the grid through an

The Ganges River Of India
The Ganges River in India is an important river system that provides water for personal use, industry,
and agriculture for well over half a million people. This river also serves a major role in the region s
cultural and religious practices. It is widely believed that this body of water is the Earthly
manifestation of the Hindu goddess Ganga. For thousands of years, people have believed that Ganga
can wash away a lifetime of sins and, therefore, no amount of pollution can harm her (Conway). As a
result of this belief, industrial, agricultural, and human waste are dumped into the river on a daily
basis.
Hindus also believe that bathing themselves in the water of the river will wash away all of their sins
and grant spiritual rewards such as deliverance from sin and attainment of nirvana (Das). Hindus
believe that to die on the banks of the Ganges is an assurance of heavenly bliss and will grant
emancipation from the eternal cycle of birth and death (Das). Due to this belief, millions of people use
the banks of the river for cremation and burial (BBC). Aside from religious ceremonies, poor people
who cannot afford to be cremated are wrapped in white muslin and placed in the river (BBC).
Following ceremonies, the ashes and dead bodies are dumped into the river. These religious practices
are believed to be a primary cause of the degraded water quality of the Ganges River near Varanasi. If
the quality of water continues to become even more degraded, a crucial part of the

libraries cultivate the value of increased education and a social unity to advancing as a society.
Libraries encourage reading, spread ideas that ultimately create a social unity. In fact, libraries have
been found in the 1730s by Benjamin Franklin. He believed libraries would be a place to access and

guidance but libraries also play a part in helping the young. For instance, the percentage of people
who receive help from a librarian is gradually increasing. Younger groups of 43 percent are getting

Dispositional Inference In Research Paper
Humans are social thinkers, and therefore, have actions that are influenced by their social situations.
Social cognition is how people select, interpret, judge, and store the information they receive from
others. Basically, we remember the information we deem important and that means something to us,
and use shortcuts to fill in the rest. We utilize these shortcuts to conserve mental effort, to save time
and thought, and to manage our self image.
One shortcut many individuals use is going off of our current expectations, which can sometimes lead
to holding stereotypes (Trope Thompson, 1997) (Kenrick 76). For example, when I went tailgating
freshman year, I did this without even realizing it. Although I didn t know the fraternity boys who ...

For instance, one weekend I witnessed an acquaintance get into a fight downtown. The thoughts of
people seeing this probably ranged from thinking this individual was aggressive, to thinking he was a
victim. However, knowing this individual as an aggressive, confident guy, I simply made an inference
that he started the fight. Surprisingly enough, to me at least, he said that it was the other guy who
started the fight, and others agreed. This is an epitome of the correspondence bias improperly using
dispositional inferences. This can also be seen in a study by Edward Jones and Victor Harris, 1967.
The study participants read essays that were either pro or anti Fidel Castro, and were told that the
writers either chose their stance, or were forced to take it. You would think that the participants would
judge the individuals who got to choose their side as more strongly biased than those who were simply
given a stance. However, the study participants actually paid little attention to their situations, and
deemed those who were given a side as strongly biased as well (Kenrick 78).
Galen Bodenhausen showed in his experiments (1990) that someone who is considered a morning
person is more likely to use cognitive shortcuts at night, and vice versa. Being a morning person, I can
definitely see this apply in my life. I tend to be exhausted when nighttime comes, so I use shortcuts to
to save as much energy as possible. Since I ve been aware of this, I ve taken note of it, and try to be
more mindful of these shortcuts at night. I also try and push myself to study in the day instead of
night, as this is when my brain is the most active and more likely to soak up the

The Idea Of Being Present
Omnipresence is a trait typically ascribed to God. It is defined as being present everywhere
simultaneously. However, one aspect of this definition that is not as widely agreed upon as the rest of
it is the idea of presence. What is it that philosophers mean when they refer to the presence of god.
The idea of being present is a very peculiar one. in the sense that to physical objects it simply
describes an object being in some sort of confined region of space, however Per Anselm, when we
apply this to a god, an all powerful and all knowing agent, it doesn t make much sense to say they are
at any regions of space in reality, in which the agent doesn t exert his existence. In a sense the agent
exists everywhere yet not wholly at any point in space. This interpretation.
Furthermore, Thomas Aquinas refines Anselm s theology by introducing the notion of god existing
through his own influence in a different sense of space than that occupied by matter and energy. This
influence includes his omnipotence, omniscience and his creations. This particular explanation
resonates greatly with Anselm s idea of God s existence being unrestricted by space. For all intents
and purposes this influence of God could be seen as something in a fourth dimension that is
unperceivable to simple observations. This would tie into Wierenga proposal that god is unseen to the
world, yet the world is laid bare before god. This idea of god being unseen even transfers into Aquinas
analogy of the king

The WSPU began to drift away from the leaflet and tea party tactics used by the NUWSS. In November 1911 the Concillation Bill was dropped. The supporters of womens suffrage were incensed. They organised window smashing across central London, leaders were imprsioned, once an axe was thown at Prime Minister Asquith narrowly missng him. The Prime Minister was against womens suffrage, and this violence casued by the suffragettes gave him the perfect excuse not to give in argueing that if he gave in, it would encourage other groups to do the same. This in some aspects is true, in today s society if groups of people have a belief they protest! Some violently and some peacefully (such as Martin Luther Kings followers) whether or not these peopleare now inspired by the suffragettes is unknown. One of the biggest differences in methods between the Suffragists and the Suffragettes was the role of the media within their campaigns. The new WSPU protesting methods involved smashing windows, breaking street lamps and arson e.g. 2nd June 1913 post boxes in Lesham were set on fire. Pros And Cons Of The Scottish Independence Movement JB Ladera/7 The Scottish Independence Movement is a major controversy in Europe as it can lead to good or bad outcomes to those involved with it. Both sides, for independence and against independence, all have their own perspective on the situation, and try to decide the best for the future of Scotland. Scotland wants to become independent from the United Kingdom (UK). This decision could heavily affect their economy and government by having both positive and negative impacts. • 6. Terror Management Theory Introduction Psych 317 As humans, we are unique from animals in many ways. We have an internal guidance system called a conscience that allows us to think and act in a way close to our deepest values. We have an independent will that does not allow genetic influences or the environment to dictate our actions. We have an infinite creative imagination that allows us to create beyond our reality but perhaps the most uniquely human endowment we all possess is self awareness. Self awareness is the recognition of how we feel and how we behave. It also allows us to examine why we exist and ultimately, that we are going to die. While this study suggests that there is no need to be around similar people during times of vulnerability, the researchers recognize that the individuals in these groups were mere observers and not actually interacting with each other. Another hypothesis that emerged from TMT research is the anxiety buffer hypothesis. This hypothesis stresses the importance of high self esteem and how it can shield individuals from experiencing death anxiety. Individuals with high self esteem feel that they are an ideal example of their culture and enjoy the protection from the mortality concerns that their culture offers (Hirschberger et al., 2002). Studies that exemplify the anxiety buffer hypothesis are those that link TMT and risky sexual behaviors. In a 2004 study, researchers noted that by making mortality salient, a willingness to engage in life threatening behaviors, such as unsafe sex, was reported (Orit Taubman, Ben Ari). This study suggests that engaging in risky sex represents two facets of vulnerability related to the threat of death. One is the absolute fear or extermination which is associated to having the risky sex and the other is the need to love and have intimacy, a uniquely human trait that is related to self esteem. Basically, when faced with mortality, humans yearn to fulfill their basic needs of love, even if that means risking life itself (Orit Taubman, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Elie is fifteen when the tragedy begins. He is taken with his family through many trials and then is separated from everyone besides his father. They are left with only each other, of which they are able to confide in and look to for support. The story is told through a series of creative writing practices. Mr. Wiesel uses strong diction, and syntax as well as a combination of stylistic devices. The Babylonian creation myth detailed in the Enuma Elis and one of the Egyptian creation myths narrated in the Hymn to Aten outline the culture s own religious answer to the working of the universe. These opinionated acts of the gods causes them to appear subject to bias and irrationality; both of which instill harsh traits which cause the gods to be beings worthy of fear in the eyes of mankind. The Egyptian pharaoh Akhenaten depicts his own beliefs on the nature of divinity in his writing of the Hymn to Aten. Egyptian ideology, previous based around multiple gods, became monotheistic under the rule of Akhenaten. He wrote the hymn to express Aten as the sole God without equal who created all that exists (NYU Classes). Aten created life and controls life in this Egyptian creation myth, and his divinity is one that adheres to a cyclical nature of life and death. He gives his people the things they need while also caring for the animals. The speaker s voice in the hymn illuminates the greatness of Aten as each line is one of adoration and amazement. Aten is depicted as beauteous, mighty and radiant as he lights and warms the Earth for mankind, further reinforcing the immense devotion the speaker has for their god (NYU Classes). This level of love for Aten shows he is a good natured god with good intentions for his people. As multiple gods exist, conflicts and distinct traits also exist. This truth is seen clearly in the contrast between Aten and the Babylonian gods. Aten is characterized as an exceptionally calm and caring god, and as he is never seen in a situation where he needs to defend himself, this inherently good nature is consistent. On the ... • 13. Symbolism In Midsummer Night s Dream By William Shakespeare Midnights Summer Run A Critical Analysis In the famous comedy Midsummer Night s Dream by William Shakespeare s there are a variety of symbols, allusions, imagery and dramatic irony displayed throughout the whole play. Many pictures are able to depict these attributes also and are displayed within the power point. To begin with, I chose the following quotes and scenes to shown the symbolism in Midnights Summer Run for the following reasons. When Puck fetches a pansy other wise known as Cupid s flower so that Oberon can use its magic juice to make his victims fall head over heels in love with others. Oberon responds by saying The juice of it on sleeping eye lids laid. Will make or man or woman madly dote. Upon the next live creature that it sees (2.1.170 172). I chose this quote because it the juice s fast acting power seems to be symbolizing what often happens in everyday life. As every teenager and even adult know, love can be unpredictable and inexplicable. Therefore, making it a perfect symbol of how crazy love can truly be, no matter how much one tries to control or change it love seems to find and follow its own destiny despite others wishes for it. As mentioned in the collage, symbols provide a great key to understanding the play and offer insight to the commentary. External, Internal, and Construct Validity Essay Validity pertains to both the methods and the design of a research study and indicates the degree with which correct inferences can be made from the results of a research study (Indiana University Of Pennsylvania, 2010). According to Trochim and Donnelly, there are four types of validity including conclusion, internal, construct, and external (2008). In this assignment, three of these types will be discussed. Internal validity is the extent to which a test measures what it claims to measure. External validity on the other hand, is the extent to which the results of a research study can be generalized to other groups, other times, and other settings. Construct validity demonstrates an association between results and the prediction of a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Instrumentation is concerned a lack of consistency in the measuring instrument that could account for invalid results of a research study. This threat is most likely to occur when two different forms are used for the pre and post tests or if the instrument is constructed poorly. (Creswell, 2009). Mortality can occur if research participants drop out of the study before completion. This problem is more likely to occur if participants are volunteers or if the sample group is too small (Creswell, 2009). Statistical regression is the tendency of participants who score high on a pretest to score lower (or closer to the mean) on the posttest and consequently, participants who score low on a pretest tend to score higher on the posttest. This regression may significantly influence the distribution of scores. Finally, differential selection can occur if already formed groups are used in a study as the groups may have had existing differences from the beginning. For example, the subjects in each group may have extreme age differences or educational backgrounds. As a result, any differences found at the posttest may be due to these differential selection differences rather than being due to the independent variable. External validity is the degree to which the results of a research study can be generalized to and across other populations, settings, times and tasks. From its highest bough to the loose sand on its mighty roots, the ancient tree quivered lightly, yet was untroubled by the breeze. Many a storm had passed over the tree, yet no rain had managed to drown those fathomless roots, no hail had managed to bite the iron bark. As the stars hang, unchanging in the nighttime sky, and as the sun moves in ceaseless circles around the earth, so the tree had endured. Infrastructure consists of all the assets that countries require to enable its daily operations and orderly functions. Transportation, energy, communications and water, are some of the infrastructure assets that serve as the backbone to our society. While traveling this summer with my family, I realized just how far behind the U.S. is compared to other parts of the world when it is considered one of the most advanced countries in the world. I thought to myself... Why hasn t the U.S. invested in such projects? China spends 7% of its GDP on infrastructure and India spends 5%. The U.S. spends just over 3%. As a result, U.S. infrastructure now ranks 14th globally according to the World Economic Forum s infrastructure index. • 22. Describe The Importance Of The Colosseum The Colosseum Koch, Matt Do you know what one of the most important structures to mankind history is? The Colosseum. The importance of the Colosseum, otherwise known originally as the Flavian Amphitheatre, was that many of the materials, styles, and architecture were inspiring to many architects and designers constructing today s modern facilities and structures. The emperor of Rome at the time, Vespasian, began building the Colosseum (Flavian Amphitheatre) in 72 AD. They believed that in ancient Rome the patron was more noble and loyal than the architects, and the architects were just craftsmen and hired hands (Woog, 2014). So as of today the designers and architects are unknown to the world, and will probably never be found out about because if limited evidence. Floor plans, 3 dimensional scale models, perspective drawings, and full size design sketches are what were used by the anonymous architects and designers of the Colosseum (Hopkins, 2011). The site of construction was formerly known as the Golden House, owned and lived in by Nero the Emperor. This was drained and as a precaution against potential earthquake damage concrete foundations six metres deep were put down to support it (Cartwright, 2012). And eight long years of hard work and design later the Colosseum (Flavian Amphitheatre) was completed in 80 CE. There were many materials mixed in the project of constructing the Colosseum (Flavian Amphitheatre). The walls of the Colosseum were built with stone. They made use of a number of arches in order to keep the weight down, but yet still keep them strong (Cartwright, 2012). The floor of the Colosseum was wooden and usually covered in sand most of the time. But the floor was taken out due to heavy weathering in 1674 AD. And about 19 miles outside of Rome in a little town of Tivoli were quarries where the Romans mined there stone blocks out of to construct the walls of the Colosseum. Some other material they had used to construct the colosseum include, limestone brick, concrete and volcanic stone (otherwise known as tufa ), pumice stone. Throughout this semester, the most prevalent subject that has continuously risen from conversation is that of sacrifice. Through the three books read in class, A Tale of Two Cities, A Doll s House, and Brave New World, one can learn that sacrifice is not a selfless thing, but a necessary part of life when attaining something he or she feels is of greater value. In A Tale of Two Cities, written by Charles Dickens, Sydney Carton is introduced as a lethargic alcoholic that has little interest in living. As the story progresses, however, Dickens shows Sydney s interest in another character named Lucie. Later, Sydney even announces his love to her before she weds another man, Charles Darnay, yet he still continues to speak of the worthlessness of his life as the story continues. It becomes very obvious to the reader that Lucie is the focal point of Sydney s life, and that he lives primarily in the light of her happiness. Towards the end of the novel, Darnay is in prison and soon facing the guillotine. Sydney, who looks stunningly similar to Darnay, takes his place and dies to ensure Lucie s happiness with Darnay in their future. From the time he announced his love to Lucie until his death, Sydney showed his passionate interest and care for Lucie while showing apathy for his own life. It is clear that Sydney valued Lucie and her happiness more than his own life. Therefore, by ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

They are found in soil (dust), air, water and air, which provide amoeba multiple opportunities to spread (c). These can be pathogenic or non pathogenic. Pathogenic FLA can invade and cause opportunistic and non opportunistic infections in humans, which are found in the genus Acanthamoeba, Balamuthia mandrillaris, Naegleria fowleri, and Sappinia pedata (b). Hartmannella is a genus of amoeba which is in water systems of drinking water, cooling towers and hospitals. They are capable of harbouring micro organisms like bacteria or pathogenic yeasts. This helps the micro organisms to develop and spread (d) (e). Discussion In Mexico city, in a survey looking at pathogenic and FLA inhabiting swimming pool water it was found that the most and least common species of amoeba was Naegleria gruberi Schardinger ( 59.02%) , Naegleria fowleri (16.77%), Acanthamoeba castellanii (7.64%) and Thecamoeba verrucosa (0.12%). (a) Naegleria has 30 different species.Naegleria Fowleri species is a thermo tolerant ameobaflagellate, which causes primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) that affects the Central Nervous System (CNS). Since the use of a dictionary has been associated with negative views among teachers and educators, there is relatively little body of researches in regard to its impact on L2 acquisition. Many teachers argue that the use of the dictionary while reading may divert students attention to an individual word instead of understanding the text as a whole; thus, hinder the comprehension process (knight, 1994). The top communicative approach that advocates implicit vocabulary learning was dominant in the 1970s and 1980s which led many educators to discourage the frequent use of dictionary and pay more attention to guessing word meaning from context (Sökmen, 1997). However, there are many limitations to employ merely the guessing strategy. As ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is important to have a look at the information provided by a typical dictionary in order to recognize the potential effectiveness of dictionaries in enhancing vocabulary acquisition. In most dictionaries, a typical word entry includes: meaning, grammar, usage, history, status, synonym, discrimination, application of derivative affixes, details of the parts of speech, indications of style and register, pronunciation, the origin of the word, labels to indicate the field in which the word is commonly used, gender of words, verb conjugations, common expressions, idioms and abbreviations. Marckwardt (1973) believes that the information supplied by dictionaries about the language can not be found elsewhere. Taking into consideration the valuable information supplied by dictionaries, the significant role of the dictionary in developing the process of learning vocabulary can not be denied. In recent years, dictionary use has relatively become a topic of research interest. • 28. Oracle Of Delphi To Chaerephon About Socrates Study Question One: What is the message from the Oracle of Delphi to Chaerephon about Socrates? Early in Socrates testimony he refers to a witness by the name Chaerephon, he is described as an early friend of Socrates and to all those present at the trial. It is mentioned that he was exiled; however, he returned. According to Socrates, Chaerephon acted in a rash manner; thus, Chaerephon boldly asks the oracle of Delphi whether any man is wiser than Socrates. The Oracle of Delphi, also known as the Pythian prophetess, responded saying there was no man wiser (Pojman and Vaughn). We then learn that Chaerephon was dead, but his brother, who was present in court, could testify in support of the claim. Study Question Three: How does Socrates ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I think of arrogance as excessive pride or dramatization with one s own achievements. The only blatant case of arrogance to me is when he proposes maintenance in the Prytaneum to be a just return (Pojman and Vaughn). Looking more into the Prytaneum, I found this is where victorious Olympic athletes ate for free; for Socrates to say he deserves free meals for the rest of his life does sound conceited. This feeling must have been shared by the jury, by comparing the first vote, determining if he was guilty, to the second vote, which determined his punishment, nearly 80 of those who voted for him to be not guilty supported the death penalty shortly after he made that remark. It s hard to say if he was serious though, all we get is a synopsis, his gesticulations could have indicated that he was trying to lighten up the atmosphere with a joke. Some may consider the anecdote about him finding out he was the wisest man alive from the God of Delphi to be arrogant; however, he wasn t the one who seeked the answer, it was his friend Chaerephon. Moreover, he was skeptical to find out that was the case, so he immediately set out to provide counter evidence to the Oracle. Lastly, emphatically advocating to reproach those who pretend to know something when they know nothing makes it hard to say he was arrogant; I see his behavior as a healthy skeptic who was hungry for the truth. The death penalty was absolutely unnecessary; unfortunately, he had more enemies in the jury than friends. As history shows unconventional views are generally suppressed by those with a vested interest, those who brought charges against him along with his other enemies enjoyed the superior social status that came with inflating one s wisdom, and ... This river also serves a major role in the region s cultural and religious practices. It is widely believed that this body of water is the Earthly manifestation of the Hindu goddess Ganga. For thousands of years, people have believed that Ganga can wash away a lifetime of sins and, therefore, no amount of pollution can harm her (Conway). As a result of this belief, industrial, agricultural, and human waste are dumped into the river on a daily basis. Hindus also believe that bathing themselves in the water of the river will wash away all of their sins and grant spiritual rewards such as deliverance from sin and attainment of nirvana (Das). Hindus believe that to die on the banks of the Ganges is an assurance of heavenly bliss and will grant emancipation from the eternal cycle of birth and death (Das). Due to this belief, millions of people use the banks of the river for cremation and burial (BBC). Aside from religious ceremonies, poor people who cannot afford to be cremated are wrapped in white muslin and placed in the river (BBC). Social cognition is how people select, interpret, judge, and store the information they receive from others. Basically, we remember the information we deem important and that means something to us, and use shortcuts to fill in the rest. We utilize these shortcuts to conserve mental effort, to save time and thought, and to manage our self image. One shortcut many individuals use is going off of our current expectations, which can sometimes lead to holding stereotypes (Trope Thompson, 1997) (Kenrick 76). The thoughts of people seeing this probably ranged from thinking this individual was aggressive, to thinking he was a victim. However, knowing this individual as an aggressive, confident guy, I simply made an inference that he started the fight. Surprisingly enough, to me at least, he said that it was the other guy who started the fight, and others agreed. This is an epitome of the correspondence bias improperly using dispositional inferences. This can also be seen in a study by Edward Jones and Victor Harris, 1967. The study participants read essays that were either pro or anti Fidel Castro, and were told that the writers either chose their stance, or were forced to take it. You would think that the participants would judge the individuals who got to choose their side as more strongly biased than those who were simply given a stance. However, the study participants actually paid little attention to their situations, and deemed those who were given a side as strongly biased as well (Kenrick 78). Galen Bodenhausen showed in his experiments (1990) that someone who is considered a morning person is more likely to use cognitive shortcuts at night, and vice versa. Being a morning person, I can definitely see this apply in my life. I tend to be exhausted when nighttime comes, so I use shortcuts to to save as much energy as possible. However, one aspect of this definition that is not as widely agreed upon as the rest of it is the idea of presence. What is it that philosophers mean when they refer to the presence of god. The idea of being present is a very peculiar one. in the sense that to physical objects it simply describes an object being in some sort of confined region of space, however Per Anselm, when we apply this to a god, an all powerful and all knowing agent, it doesn t make much sense to say they are at any regions of space in reality, in which the agent doesn t exert his existence. In a sense the agent exists everywhere yet not wholly at any point in space. This interpretation. Furthermore, Thomas Aquinas refines Anselm s theology by introducing the notion of god existing through his own influence in a different sense of space than that occupied by matter and energy. This influence includes his omnipotence, omniscience and his creations. This particular explanation resonates greatly with Anselm s idea of God s existence being unrestricted by space. For all intents and purposes this influence of God could be seen as something in a fourth dimension that is unperceivable to simple observations. This would tie into Wierenga proposal that god is unseen to the world, yet the world is laid bare before god. This idea of god being unseen even transfers into Aquinas analogy of the king ... The small states are not able to prosper because they lack resources. These small states share measures of openness to trade, export diversification, access to and reliance on external financial flows, export dependence, international transportation costs, and vulnerability to natural disasters.
