Three Cups of Tea by David Oliver Relin and Greg Mortenson tells a story that takes the reader along
an adventure, up mountains, and across the world. Mortenson is a mountaineer that ends up in Korphe,
Pakistan after he fails to climb K2. It is here where he sees poverty unlike anywhere he has yet to be.
Mortenson, struck by shock, promises to come back to the small village and build a school in hopes of
turning the place around. He ends up raising enough money to fulfil his promise, being promoted to
the director of the Central Asia Institute which build schools across the country, and begins to focus
more on girls education. Throughout the novel, the overall tone was direct and straightforward, and it
is essentially journalistic due to the third person point of view and changing narration. Mortenson
discovers a purpose from the result of being lost in a quest to fulfil his duty of director and the
continuation of being a humanitarian in these developing countries which is one of the author s
purposes of writing this book. In Three Cups of Tea, there are many points in time when Mortenson
thinks he has gone in the wrong direction, but ironically ends up right where he needs to be after all
which ends up being the main theme of the book: making the best out of a bad situation.
The theme is one that many people should be able to relate to: anyone can turn a bad situation into a
good one. For instance, when Mortenson could not reach the peak of K2, he is disappointed, however

First, the bald and oversized Monk that Chaucer tells of is entirely undisciplined. His taste was all for
tracking down hare, meaning he engaged in a forbidden pastime for monks, hunting. He was
fashionable, with sleeves trimmed with gray fur, the finest in the land, and he was fond of precious
metals, wearing a pin made of wrought gold. The Monk is a mere pleasure seeker who relished a plum
swan as his favorite roast. The Prioress, in comparison, has a much more shallow aura about her. She
kept small dogs as pets, which, of course, were forbidden in convents during medieval times, and even
more repugnant, her dogs were fed roasted meat or milk or good wheat bread. Chaucer tell us, She
would weep if she but came upon a mouse caught in a trap, if it were dead or bleeding, implying that
she cares more about the suffering of animals than people. Chaucer uses a barrage of satirical
statements when describing and discussing the Prioress, giving the reader the impression that she
actually contradicts her appearance. She is focused on irrelevant things such as dignity, charm and
pride, as well as wealth, as evidenced by her coral rosary beads with the brooch of golden sheen
hanging from it.

My family and I bought food and made lunches to give out in local parks. A act that is very commonly
done as act of giving but has such a deep element that I find is fundamental to being Catholic

Imagine being a young girl living in Haiti, enjoying your day and suddenly you are being raped. What
if every night your mother tested you, against your will, to see if you were still whole . In the book
Breath, Eyes, Memory by Edwidge Danticat, characters experience a lot of trauma and they react to it
in many ways. The main character Sophie and her mother, Martine, both internalize their trauma at the
beginning of the book, but throughout the course of the book Sophie learns that it is okay to talk about
and share her experiences. However, Martine continues to run away from reminders of the experiences
that happened. Martine also struggles being near Sophie because she is a constant reminder of her
rape. Edwidge Danticat uses conveys the reactions to trauma through the characters actions after.
Martine and Sophie both struggle to deal with their traumatic experiences and suffering, in a healthy
way, throughout the book.

By studying the history of Native Americans, we can understand some of their characteristics,
qualities, and perspectives regarding America s landscape. Many of these still persist today in either
the original or a mutated form. The Native American quality of living unsustainably persists today in
various forms because it is difficult to notice an unsustainable lifestyle. John Steinbeck, Barry Lopez,
and Scott Momaday in The Log From the Sea of Cortez, The American Geographies, and The Way to
Rainy Mountain describe this effect.
Today, it is easy to look back and see that Native Americans, including the Micmac, lived
unsustainable lifestyles. The Micmac s economy revolved around trading small animals (e.g. beavers).
Their desire for European goods provided an incentive to deplete the animal population (Merchant
13). A problem with this lifestyle is that it is difficult to know that the animal s population is being
depleted until it is too late.
The Native Americans of the Great Plains centered their economy on the buffalo. The Native
Americans used difficult techniques (e.g. tricking them to fall off cliffs) to catch the buffalo, which
