Emily Dickinson Poetry Essay
Emily Dickinson s Poetry
There is a lot more to poetry than just the words themselves. What William Shakespeare called, the
mind s eye also plays a role (Borus34). What that means is that your experiences and thoughts will
add to your understanding. Dickinson had an active mind and a style so unique and unusual with her
writing. Something that was very unusual about her writing was that she never put a title to her poems.
Just like many poets, she used a wide assortment of literary devices such as, metaphor, simile,
alliteration, and symbolism. Unlike many writers of her time, Dickinson did not use conventional
rhyme, capitalization, or punctuation (Borus36). For example, she would put dashes not just at the end
of a line, but also ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For that last Onset when the King/ Be witnessed in the Room (7 8), In the first part of this line, the
author uses an oxymoron by stating that last Onset . Last means an end, while the definition of onset is
a beginning. (Borus57). Dickinson s poems use a lot of symbols, things that represent other things.
When the speaker describes Onset when the King Be witnessed in the Room , (7 8). I feel like the king
is being targeted as a symbol of God and death. This is showing connection that the narrator must
have a strong belief in religion.
This poem is full of sadness, with the narrator stating, I Willed my Keepsakes (9). Making a will is the
last and final way of ensuring the narrator s previously owned possessions staying with loved ones
after death (Borus62). Most people fear death, the tone of the narrator is merely one of sad acceptance
(Borus62). At the moment of the revealing of the narrators will, There interposed a Fly , This is telling
us that the fly is again interrupting (12). The fly seems to come across as a noisy fly. Why is it
representing as a noisy fly? Why did the fly appear at the end of someone s life and at their last
breathe? The description of the fly changes in stanza thirteen as the narrator states, With Blue
uncertain stumbling Buzz , thus explaining the fly is no ordinary house fly but a metaphorical figure
representing death (Johnson173). The blue buzz in being

DBQ Essay On CEO Salary
2. There is no world in which the current CEO salaries would be considered justified or rational.
Today, CEOs make about 344 times the average pay of workers which is up from 30 to 40 times about
thirty years ago (Doc A). While they should be rewarded for success and advancing their business,
there is a point where it begins to hurt both the company and the rest of the economy. It takes money
away from taxpayers and is used to increase the personal wealth of millionaires. The Institute for
Policy Studies in Washington found that five elements in the tax code encourage overpaying
executives, which can cost the American people up to $20 billion a year (Doc A). $20 billion is no
small sum and could instead be used to increase the standard of living in America. With this extra
taxpayer money, the US could provide healthcare to millions or slash infant mortality rates across the
globe. Instead, it goes into another personal account in the Cayman s. CEO ... Show more content on

In the cities around Silicon Valley, property values and rents are skyrocketing as more highly paid tech
workers move in and are able to afford higher costs. This is beginning to force lower wage workers
out of the area, because they can no longer afford to live here. This is a big problem, because these
workers being forced out form the base of the economic pyramid and by throwing them out local
economies lose their stability. In order to make sure that the Bay Area remains diverse, cities must
invest in more affordable housing that will allow these workers to live here. In the long run, this will
only increase the economic benefits for all classes of workers and bring economic prosperity. As the
last few areas in the Bay are becoming gentrified, local governments must quickly take action before
these low wage workers disappear

The Characteristics Of The Hero Of Sundiata As A Hero
Sundiata is described by the griot as heroic because of several qualities: his intelligence, his
compassion, his bravery, his sense of justice, his charisma, his piety and his strength. He uses
intelligence as a commander of the army by devising strategies that defeat larger armies. His bravery
is reflected in his tendency to rush into battle himself, killing enemies left and right with little regard
for his own safety. His sense of justice is reflected in the way he forgives others trespasses (within
reason), and the description of his rule is a just one. His charisma unites people together; during his
exile, all he encounters are impressed with him, and hence do they later join his empire. His piety
helps him defeat Soumaoro, since, once Sundiata discovers the extent of Soumaoro s sorcery, he is
willing to admit he needs the help of spirits and magic to win. And finally, his legendary strength
makes him a hero worthy of remembrance. Balla Fasséké tells him to be a man of action so that his
deeds will be remembered, and Sundiata certainly lives up to his destiny. 2 Do you consider the griot
to be a historian or a storyteller? Defend your answer. One could argue this both ways. The griot
certainly defines himself more as a historian, though not by Western standards. Griots are culturally
oral historians. He loathes written history, as it lacks the warmth of the human voice . But he
constantly defends his vocation as crucial, since it preserves the memory not only of

Pressure And Stereotypes For Girls In The Fashion Industry
The Fashion Industry
Under society s norms for decades, girls have been put under the pressure and expectation to have
perfect bodies. That is, thin and curved, beautified by applying pounds of makeup to their face but not
appear ridiculously overdone. Where do these unreachable standards come from? When a young girl
hears the model on the cover of Vogue being called flawless it s easy for her to then aspire to be a real
life replica of the photoshop. These companies spit out magazine covers plastered with girls idols
daily. As if maintaining the perfect body wasn t hard enough our culture also forces girls into the
forever expanding world of makeup, however, body image is a pressing issue for girls. Ads and
posters of skinny female models are everywhere. Young girls not only could be better but need to be
better and feel forced to have the perfect physique. Girls are evaluated and oppressed by their physical
appearances. With accessories and apparel designed to enhance a look; social media, magazines, and
marketing campaigns and advertisements add to the burden of perfection. The fashion industry is a
prime target of body image issues, as they believe clothes look better on tall and slim women. Based
on a survey participated by 13 to 17 year old in the U.S., 90% felt pressured by fashion and media
industries to be skinny , with more than 60% habitually compare themselves to models, while 46%
will strive to achieve it. Furthermore, the severity of this matter continues to

Business and Market Exposure Maersk Line
Business and market exposure Maersk Line Dependency on global economy and world trade Being in
an international industry, the market for Maersk Line is global and the demand for its container
shipping services is directly correlated with the development in the global economy and the world
trade situation. Globalization of world industries, spurred by deregulation policies and trade
liberalization, as well as an increase of export volume from e.g. China has in recent years been an
important driver of GDP and growth in world trade. Demand and supply Thus the demand for cargo

for passengers, oil etc. overcapacity cannot be compensated or soaked by alternatives. Combined with
the relatively inelastic supply of vessels (it takes 1 3 years to build a vessel) and the relatively elastic
carrier supply (carriers can easily move from one route to another), overcapacity will spur competition
and pressure on price. In the container shipping industry price is expressed in freight rates. So freight
rates are volatile and have due to the overcapacity or fear of future overcapacity declined in 2006 on a
number of tradelanes. This has also affected Maersk Line. During the first half year of 2006 freight
rates have been under great pressure in most services...compared to the first half year in 2005 Maersk
Line s average rate has declined 5% including bunker adjustment factor 9% before this adjustment ,

Egypt ABSTRACT
Rice is one of the most important food crops for more than half of the world s population, the rice
weevil, Sitophilus oryzae (L.) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is a major pest of stored rice in Egypt. The
use of nanoparticles as pesticide could be promising alternative strategy to affect pests which have
become resistant to pesticides. Two nano materials nano aluminum oxide and nano zinc oxide were
tested against rice weevil under laboratory and store conditions. Nano aluminum oxide was found to
be highly effective against S. oryzae, while nano zinc oxide has lowered effectiveness against the
weevil.
Results showed that mortality percentage of S. oryzae were 65.34 ± 8.9 and
58.58 ± 8.3 after treatment with 0.5 gm / kg, 100.00± 9.6 and 81.81 ± 4.2 with
1 gm / kg. The mortality scored with 2 gm / kg 100.0 ± 0.0 and 80.80 ± 2.3 after 14 days of treatment
with nano aluminum oxide and nano zinc oxide, respectively as compared to 0.0 ± 0.0 in the control

The first problem that I noticed when I read the case was the fact it mentioned that HP was under
managed. In 2001, HP had 84,400 employees while Carly Fiorina was Chief Executive Officer ¹. This
fact lets me know that there should have been various levels of management from the CEO on down
to the first level employees. In order for a company to be successful there has to be a vision and
direction should be provided to carry out that vision. As CEO, Carly Fiorina took care of being the
face of the company but neglected to provide that much needed direction internally. She could have
organized a senior leadership ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It would appear that HP made the right decision by bringing on Mark Hurd as its new Chief Executive
Officer. He was brought in to correct a lot of the management deficiencies that Carly Fiorina left
behind. Mark Hurd brought with him a focus on execution and he began working from the bottom up.
I think that his method was needed at that time because it works well when dealing with a vertical
management structure. All levels must feel important and involved in making the company successful.
Although Mark Hurd maybe the face of the company, he is not the only person that keeps it going. As
a good leader does, he kept what worked. In this case it was keeping the overall strategy that Carly
Fiorina had in place but he provided specific visionary purposes. He had to restructure divisions and
ultimately lay off over 14,000 employees to maintain the company s budget goals. In the long run,
Mark Hurd made the difficult decisions that needed to be made to bring the company back on track.
His actions earned the trust of his employees and therefore I would conclude that he boosted the
overall morale of his employees.

The Shelton With Sunpots By Alfred Stieglitz
Similarly, City Night (1929) is a forty eight inch tall painting of geometric and sharp edged urban
architecture towering over the glowing moon. The naturally rounded moon is contrasted to the
manmade straight lines of the city. The pedestrian perspective and ominous scale places the audience
between sharp towers. The environment and people that surrounded Georgia O Keeffe stimulates her
to add it in her work. Specifically, Alfred Stieglitz was obviously a great influence in Georgia s life;
being each others muse and benefactor. The 1926 painting The Shelton with Sunspots has
photographic influences. The warm toned painting produces a sun glare that is seen through a camera

On Thursday April 25, 2013 , I attended a jazz vocal concert at the Music Concert Hall. The first vocal
ensemble opened up the performance with a slow rhythmic song called Blue Skies. It began with
vocals and I noticed a light auxiliary percussion and drum rhythm. Also, the bass guitarist used
walking bass and the piano and electric guitar joined in as well. The first song also consisted of two
soloist Regina and Chantel who took the front stage to show off their chops. After the solo
performances they fell back into the vocal sections and finished off the song as a complete band. The
second performance had a piano opening which led to vocals joining in at the same time as the rhythm

improvising style. The entire band started all together which led to a Trumpet solo. Then Jose on the
Sax did his solo followed by the pianist comping. Then the choir along with the band joined together
to lead to a female solo which was particularly interesting since she was scatting. The second
performance of this ensemble was Spring can really hang you up the most which consisted of 3/4 time

Differences of belief between different ethnic, cultural, and racial groups are undoubtedly the biggest
contributor to disputes within the history of the world. WWI started due to a disagreement between

Despite being one of the most accepting countries in the world, Canada is no exception. Since

mainly the French and English community residing in Canada. Although both groups belong to the

During the 1960s, the Quiet Revolution occurred in Canada, a struggle in regards to French Canadians
becoming integrated into Canadian society. It was also during this time that many notable separatist

similarly, the Parti Québécois was formed in 1968. They mainly gained support because French
Canadians believed their rights were being compromised by English Canadians. Krueger states in

English Canada, or complete independence as a sovereign country. On November 15, 1976, the Parti

Bladder is one of the organ which is part of the urinary system of body. The major function of the
bladder is to store urine produced in the kidney prior to urination. The urinary system of the body

The diversity remains a major challenge for majority of airlines seeking to achieve best level customer
experience and satisfaction. Different people have different reasons behind them using air transport.
The various reasons may be categorised into three main groups (Atilgan, Akinci, S. Aksoy, 2008).
First category involves those travelling for pleasure and status. Travellers in this group always use air
transport as way of achieving personal pleasures. The second group involves individuals who travel
for business or work related activities. This group of travellers have unique preferences that airline
organizations must meet so as to make them fully satisfied.
The last group of individuals are those seeking medical services and emergency service. This group of
people have unique needs that must be met so as to make them have great experience that would yield
best satisfaction. The strategies embraced must consider how the service is felt at individual level.
Failure to ensure that the majority of travellers if not all travel preferences and needs are at most met,
the organization risks losing customer to other airline organizations with better customer satisfaction
strategies (Huang Feng, 2009).

evidence, as there is today, of cultural resistance in Iran and in the USA. Some of the evidence can be

Daughter. Both Iran and USA have extremely different cultural practices. Some differences in Iran and
the USA, in which some have also partially changed since the 1980 s, are woman and freedoms, dress,
family, religion and specific values and beliefs. Women ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Iranian women have a very specific and distinct dress code that they have to follow, or there could be
severe consequences in not doing so. It shows in the movie Not without My Daughter how Betty had
to immediately cover up in clothes Iranian women wear as she arrived is Iran. In Iran, Iranians view
women s hair as erotic and so covering their hair and female figure is the basic requirements of
modesty. This is done by wearing a chador, which is a piece of dark clothing that is wrapped around
the body and head and gathered at the chin. Women are allowed to wear anything underneath their
chador, but Iranian women must hold the chador shut with one hand to cover any clothing, as it shows
Betty in Not without My Daughter. *In private, women may dress as they please for their spouses,
family, and female friends. Make up and perfume are haram, or forbidden, in Islam unless it is covered
because it attracts men to the lustfulness of the woman* (*). The dress code for women is so strict,
that any public activity that would require women to depart from the modest dress is extremely
forbidden. Although the women s dress code is very austere, the men, however, only have to eschew,
or avoid, tight pants, shorts, short sleeved shirts, and open collars in

Bomb Recycling Robots
With lots of talk revolving around robots in the news, be it from artificial intelligence (AI) driven cars
or that they are going to take all our jobs, there is an interesting discussion to be had about it. An
article written by the Forrester states that robots will replace 7% of US jobs by 2025 , it does seem like
a large problem, but it is not all bad news. With AI driven cars replacing normal cars on the road and
drones taking to the skies, there are many new ways that robots will be able to save lives in the
upcoming years that should not be over looked. Driverless cars are poised to take millions of jobs
when they are fully approved for the masses, but there is a silver lining to it. With the technology
getting better for AI driven cars where little to no human input is required, people have been ... Show

The first bomb disposal robot was used in the 1970s (Army Technology). Since all bombs are not
created equally and can be placed in various location, remote detonation is not always the best choice.
This use to require bomb squad personnel to defuse live bombs, putting them at risk of injury or death.
Older bomb disposal robots would require two robots, one to capture the bomb on a live feed and the
other to use its tools (army Technology). The robots now are not just robots strapped with its own
bombs, but more versatile camera mounted one instead. Some of the more costly robots can be
controlled with little to no training and can be controlled with just a screen and a joy stick. The robot
can be deployed at a safe distance and then driven to the location and deal with it there. The person
controlling the robot can then use the camera and controls to try and defuse the bomb as if they were
there themselves. Some of the newer robots can be controlled with gloves covered in sensors, allowing
the operator to work as if they were next to

In order to best answer the question posed one must break expansionism into two separate time
periods. Both of these time periods show comparisons and contrasts with US expansionism. From
1776 1880 and the late 1800s 1914 are chronicled by major events in United States and World history.
Using these documents as well as commonly known events that occurred during these time periods I
will show the similarities and differences that late nineteenth century and early twentieth century
United States expansionism exhibit from past United States expansionism.
United States expansionism has undergone many changes throughout the years. We have expanded for

Our largest trade henceforth must be with Asia. The Pacific is our ocean and the Pacific is the ocean of
the commerce of the future the power that rules the Pacific, therefore, is the power that rules the
world. And, with the Philippines, that power is and will forever be the American Republic (Doc E).
The Roosevelt Corollary, the most important departure from past United States expansionism, made
the acquisition of such territories not only possible but socially acceptable. Under Teddy Roosevelt,
the people of the United States were all for expansion. He had the ability to incite the American public
and rally its force behind him. After all, who can stand against the people of the United States of
America when they are truly united? Our country had progressed in its departures tracing all the way
back to 1885 when, as Thomas Nast depicts, the United States was nowhere to be found in the game
of World Plundering (Doc A). After the acquisition of a naval power, the United States could
withstand the competition involved in economic world dominance. As shown in the cartoon of
American Diplomacy in 1900, Uncle Sam is standing at the forefront of Chinas open door holding the
key which represents said American Diplomacy. (Doc G) However, with positives always come
negatives. Prejudice against immigrants and no chance of citizenship for our newly acquired lands
were a few of the drawbacks of over expansion. There simply was not enough room for all the

The Impact Of Land Ownership On The West Bank And Gaza...
The First Intifada was the 1987 Palestinian revolution against Israel. It was an uprising that was
sparked from decades of political and territorial tension in the West Bank and Gaza. There were
triggers immediately prior to the Intifada that sparked the heightened reaction however much focus
needs to be placed in the long term causes prior to December 1987 to explain the First Intifada.
Following the Six Day War, Israeli settlement and presence in the West Bank and Gaza Strip formed a
constant tension and unrest between Israelis and Palestinians. It is also important to recognise the
climate of economic adversities and low quality of living conditions for the Palestinians due to Israeli
focused government policies. This essay will discuss the importance of land ownership in the West
Bank and Gaza Strip as the source of mounting frustration by Palestinians against the Israelis. It will
also discuss the rekindling of Palestinian nationalism that was especially prominent throughout the
Intifada.
While specific events may have sparked the First Intifada, it was the overt and underlying tension
between the Palestinians and Israelis that were the foundation for the tension in 1987. This essay will
focus specifically on the tension that was caused by Israeli land ownership in the West Bank and Gaza
Strip.
The dispute of land tenure and occupation was the most extensive and enduring cause of tensions
surrounding the First Intifada. At the point of the First Intifada there was a

Now, many Chinese citizens are attempting to access these applications and searches without
censorship by connect[ing] to virtual private networks that provide them with communications
channels to servers outside the Chinese mainland (Bradsher 4). Though, many citizens have found
loopholes in order to post their messages to these websites. For example, on Weibo (the Chinese

deleted, if not manually by a superior on the site if it slipped through the system. However, because
the use of abbreviations, neologisms, homophones, and homographs by users, many political satirists,

Science, Technology And The Nightly News Essay
Science, Technology and the Nightly News
Introduction
It s not uncommon for a news audience to run across stories or headlines about science that seem too
good to be true. Headlines such as, Scientist Say Smelling Farts Might Prevent Cancer, (Stampler,
2014) or Bananas as good as drugs for treating HIV, say scientists. (Arkless Gray, 2010) Not only are
these headlines flashy enough to get the attention of a wide audience, but they go beyond distributing
the facts to wade into the waters of Yellow Journalism. In fact, much of the news distributed today
might be considered such milky fare even by passive audience members. A 2013 Pew Research Center
study found that 31 percent of U.S. adults have left a news outlet that no longer meets their needs. The
reason for the exodus? More than 60 percent say the stories are less complete while another 23.5
percent claim there are fewer stories provided by these news outlets. One might wonder how such
claims could be made in these times of 24 hour news cycles and breaking news distributed across the
web through social media at warp speed. A closer look at the same Pew study reveals a startling fact
about factual news content on cable news channels. Of the big three cable news channels (CNN, Fox
News and MSNBC) only one provides more than 50 percent of factual news content. The others go
beyond the half way mark in providing commentary or opinion. MSNBC was found to provide a
whopping 85 percent of commentary/option content

Medicare And The Elderly Of The United States
The quantity of Medicare eligible individuals continues to grow as the median age of the population of
the United States rises. The old Medicare system has become outdated and strained because of the
volume of individuals that are currently receiving benefits within the program. Since the enactment of
the Affordable Care Act (ACA), Medicare has become the main source of delivering healthcare
insurance for the elderly of the United States. In order to meet the current requirements of the ACA,
Medicare must be reformed in order to provide the promised services for the individuals that are
currently receiving benefits and for the future survival of the program.
Medicare was established by the federal government to provide healthcare insurance initially for the
elderly and included the disabled a few years after the program s inception. As of 2013, there were
52.3 million beneficiaries of Medicare, with an average of $11,910 spent on each individual for
healthcare, with a total annual budget of $582.9 billion (NCPSSM, 2015). Medicare is funded through
two trust fund accounts that are held by the U.S. Treasury: the Hospital Insurance (HI) and
Supplementary Medical Insurance (SMI) Trust Funds (Medicare.gov, 2015). These trust funds are
financed by payroll deductions, Social Security benefit taxes, premiums paid by Medicare
beneficiaries, interest from investments, and funds furnished by Congress (Medicare.gov, 2015). All of
these resources subsidize the Medicare Trust Fund in

Difference Between Anarchy And Sovereignty
ABSTRACT
This task was carried out in order to examine which system that existed in the order to establish the
International Security system. So, we found that two categories of system that existed which are
Anarchy and Sovereignty. From there, we differentiated both categories precisely. For Anarchy, we
defining the system itself, how the system works in the power politics and also anarchy and its
security dilemma. It s not only that, we also discussed the features in the Anarchy system as well.
Whereas for the Sovereignty, we explained the Hobbes s theory in term of sovereignty and at the same
time we segregated the division of sovereignty and national security and sovereignty without security
in the states. Hence, the security of a states whether nationally or internationally depends on the power
of a state to control and maintain between other states in the world. It concludes by highlighting the
differences between anarchy system and sovereignty existed in the states.

Prometheus Meaning
In 1930 José Clemente Orozco, a famous mural painter known for his radical art depicting the
Mexican revolution in interesting new ways, was asked to paint a mural in the college Pomona. This is
when and where he painted his mural titled Prometheus . In this work, Orozco s use of scale,
monochromatic colors, and emphasis help to depict the dreadfulness of the troubling time at war that it
is inspired by as well as the peace that was expected, and that came, from these times. Scale plays a
major role in the meaning of this work as a whole. In the mural one of the first things that is noticed is
the contrast in scale between the central figure and the surrounding figures in the background. This
style could have been chosen for many reasons. In this situation it seems safe to say that the central
figure is Prometheus. By making Prometheus this large, the viewer is able to make a distinction
between his importance in contrast to the remaining figures importance. Prometheus in Greek
mythology is known as a titan who steals fire from the gods and disperses it to the people of the world.

In this mural the main emphasis is placed on Prometheus. In doing this, Orozco is bringing the center
of attention on this figure and allowing the rest of the people to fade into the background. By using
emphasis in this way he is able to focus the attention on Prometheus, providing a strong focal point for
the work. By giving a visually overwhelming work emphasis on a focal point so large, the mural is
given a sense of balance allowing for there to be a sort of peace to the eye in that the viewer is not
having to search the art to find a central focal point. The use of emphasis to provide this is used by
Orozco to show the greater picture that he is trying to portray, the idea that the revolution brought a
sense of peace to Mexico in spite of all the chaos that had come with

How Did Emily Dickinson s Life Influence Her Poetry
Emily Dickinson Her Life and Poetry
Emily Elizabeth Dickinson was born December 10, 1830, into an influential family in Amherst,
Massachusetts. Her father helped found Amherst College, where Emily later attended between 1840
and 1846. She never married and died in the house where she was born on May 15, 1886.
Emily Dickinson s reclusive life was arguably a result of her proposed bi polar disorder. This life and
disorder unduly influenced the themes of her poetry. She chose not to associate herself with society
and volumes of her poems, published posthumously, examine this idea as well as the themes of nature
and death. The clearest examples of these themes are presented in the following analysis of just of few

This poem conjures images of a solemn ceremony in which the soul reigns superior by shutting out
everyone, including the emperor, similar to the shutting out of everyone that Dickinson did. In one of
Dickinson s most famous poems, I heard a Fly buzz, the theme of death is presented as well as a
symptomatic characteristic of bi polar disorder. The poem itself epitomizes her preoccupation with
death and the macabre and also shows how the small, normally ignorable sound of a fly buzzing
becomes the only thing heard, she magnifies this sound in a situation when it seems that everything
else is much more important, but this inability to drown out extraneous noises is typical of someone
suffering from manic depression. The form of this poem employs all of Dickinson s formal patterns:
trimeter and tetrameter iambic lines, her specific use of the dash to interrupt the meter of the poem,
and it is in ABCB rhyme scheme.
Two of Dickinson s universal techniques are metaphor and the fresh application of language; both
techniques result in powerful images, and can be seen in two of her poems that focus on nature
themes, A Bird came down the Walk and narrow Fellow. She closes the poem, A Bird with a stanza
equating flight through the air with movement through water,

  • 2. Emily Dickinson Poetry Essay Emily Dickinson s Poetry There is a lot more to poetry than just the words themselves. What William Shakespeare called, the mind s eye also plays a role (Borus34). What that means is that your experiences and thoughts will add to your understanding. Dickinson had an active mind and a style so unique and unusual with her writing. Something that was very unusual about her writing was that she never put a title to her poems. Just like many poets, she used a wide assortment of literary devices such as, metaphor, simile, alliteration, and symbolism. Unlike many writers of her time, Dickinson did not use conventional rhyme, capitalization, or punctuation (Borus36). For example, she would put dashes not just at the end of a line, but also ... Last means an end, while the definition of onset is a beginning. (Borus57). Dickinson s poems use a lot of symbols, things that represent other things. When the speaker describes Onset when the King Be witnessed in the Room , (7 8). I feel like the king is being targeted as a symbol of God and death. This is showing connection that the narrator must have a strong belief in religion. This poem is full of sadness, with the narrator stating, I Willed my Keepsakes (9). Making a will is the last and final way of ensuring the narrator s previously owned possessions staying with loved ones after death (Borus62). Most people fear death, the tone of the narrator is merely one of sad acceptance (Borus62). At the moment of the revealing of the narrators will, There interposed a Fly , This is telling us that the fly is again interrupting (12). The fly seems to come across as a noisy fly. Why is it representing as a noisy fly? Why did the fly appear at the end of someone s life and at their last breathe? The description of the fly changes in stanza thirteen as the narrator states, With Blue uncertain stumbling Buzz , thus explaining the fly is no ordinary house fly but a metaphorical figure representing death (Johnson173). • 5. DBQ Essay On CEO Salary 2. There is no world in which the current CEO salaries would be considered justified or rational. Today, CEOs make about 344 times the average pay of workers which is up from 30 to 40 times about thirty years ago (Doc A). While they should be rewarded for success and advancing their business, there is a point where it begins to hurt both the company and the rest of the economy. It takes money away from taxpayers and is used to increase the personal wealth of millionaires. The Institute for Policy Studies in Washington found that five elements in the tax code encourage overpaying executives, which can cost the American people up to $20 billion a year (Doc A). $20 billion is no small sum and could instead be used to increase the standard of living in America. With this extra taxpayer money, the US could provide healthcare to millions or slash infant mortality rates across the globe. Instead, it goes into another personal account in the Cayman s. CEO ... This is beginning to force lower wage workers out of the area, because they can no longer afford to live here. This is a big problem, because these workers being forced out form the base of the economic pyramid and by throwing them out local economies lose their stability. In order to make sure that the Bay Area remains diverse, cities must invest in more affordable housing that will allow these workers to live here. In the long run, this will only increase the economic benefits for all classes of workers and bring economic prosperity. • 6. The Characteristics Of The Hero Of Sundiata As A Hero Sundiata is described by the griot as heroic because of several qualities: his intelligence, his compassion, his bravery, his sense of justice, his charisma, his piety and his strength. He uses intelligence as a commander of the army by devising strategies that defeat larger armies. His bravery is reflected in his tendency to rush into battle himself, killing enemies left and right with little regard for his own safety. His sense of justice is reflected in the way he forgives others trespasses (within reason), and the description of his rule is a just one. His charisma unites people together; during his exile, all he encounters are impressed with him, and hence do they later join his empire. His piety helps him defeat Soumaoro, since, once Sundiata discovers the extent of Soumaoro s sorcery, he is willing to admit he needs the help of spirits and magic to win. And finally, his legendary strength makes him a hero worthy of remembrance. Balla Fasséké tells him to be a man of action so that his deeds will be remembered, and Sundiata certainly lives up to his destiny. 2 Do you consider the griot to be a historian or a storyteller? Defend your answer. One could argue this both ways. The griot certainly defines himself more as a historian, though not by Western standards. Griots are culturally oral historians. He loathes written history, as it lacks the warmth of the human voice . But he constantly defends his vocation as crucial, since it preserves the memory not only of ... • 7. Pressure And Stereotypes For Girls In The Fashion Industry The Fashion Industry Under society s norms for decades, girls have been put under the pressure and expectation to have perfect bodies. That is, thin and curved, beautified by applying pounds of makeup to their face but not appear ridiculously overdone. Where do these unreachable standards come from? When a young girl hears the model on the cover of Vogue being called flawless it s easy for her to then aspire to be a real life replica of the photoshop. These companies spit out magazine covers plastered with girls idols daily. As if maintaining the perfect body wasn t hard enough our culture also forces girls into the forever expanding world of makeup, however, body image is a pressing issue for girls. Ads and posters of skinny female models are everywhere. Young girls not only could be better but need to be better and feel forced to have the perfect physique. Girls are evaluated and oppressed by their physical appearances. With accessories and apparel designed to enhance a look; social media, magazines, and marketing campaigns and advertisements add to the burden of perfection. The fashion industry is a prime target of body image issues, as they believe clothes look better on tall and slim women. Based on a survey participated by 13 to 17 year old in the U.S., 90% felt pressured by fashion and media industries to be skinny , with more than 60% habitually compare themselves to models, while 46% will strive to achieve it. Business and Market Exposure Maersk Line Business and market exposure Maersk Line Dependency on global economy and world trade Being in an international industry, the market for Maersk Line is global and the demand for its container shipping services is directly correlated with the development in the global economy and the world trade situation. Globalization of world industries, spurred by deregulation policies and trade liberalization, as well as an increase of export volume from e.g. China has in recent years been an important driver of GDP and growth in world trade. Combined with the relatively inelastic supply of vessels (it takes 1 3 years to build a vessel) and the relatively elastic carrier supply (carriers can easily move from one route to another), overcapacity will spur competition and pressure on price. In the container shipping industry price is expressed in freight rates. So freight rates are volatile and have due to the overcapacity or fear of future overcapacity declined in 2006 on a number of tradelanes. This has also affected Maersk Line. S.; El Helaly, A. A. * Plant Protection Department, Faculty of Agriculture, Fayoum University, Fayoum, Egypt Department of Economic Entomology and Pesticides, Faculty of Agriculture, Cairo University, Giza, Egypt ABSTRACT Rice is one of the most important food crops for more than half of the world s population, the rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae (L.) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is a major pest of stored rice in Egypt. The use of nanoparticles as pesticide could be promising alternative strategy to affect pests which have become resistant to pesticides. Two nano materials nano aluminum oxide and nano zinc oxide were tested against rice weevil under laboratory and store conditions. Nano aluminum oxide was found to be highly effective against S. oryzae, while nano zinc oxide has lowered effectiveness against the weevil. Results showed that mortality percentage of S. oryzae were 65.34 ± 8.9 and 58.58 ± 8.3 after treatment with 0.5 gm / kg, 100.00± 9.6 and 81.81 ± 4.2 with 1 gm / kg. The mortality scored with 2 gm / kg 100.0 ± 0.0 and 80.80 ± 2.3 after 14 days of treatment with nano aluminum oxide and nano zinc oxide, respectively as compared to 0.0 ± 0.0 in the control and 59.4 ± 3.2 with Malathion at LC50 value. Hewlett-Packard Case Assignment Hewlett Packard Case Assignment Iman Abdur Rahim Prof. Brian Grizzell Principles of Management BUS302 August 19th, 2011 The first problem that I noticed when I read the case was the fact it mentioned that HP was under managed. In 2001, HP had 84,400 employees while Carly Fiorina was Chief Executive Officer ¹. This fact lets me know that there should have been various levels of management from the CEO on down to the first level employees. In order for a company to be successful there has to be a vision and direction should be provided to carry out that vision. As CEO, Carly Fiorina took care of being the face of the company but neglected to provide that much needed direction internally. She could have organized a senior leadership ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It would appear that HP made the right decision by bringing on Mark Hurd as its new Chief Executive Officer. He was brought in to correct a lot of the management deficiencies that Carly Fiorina left behind. Mark Hurd brought with him a focus on execution and he began working from the bottom up. I think that his method was needed at that time because it works well when dealing with a vertical management structure. All levels must feel important and involved in making the company successful. Although Mark Hurd maybe the face of the company, he is not the only person that keeps it going. As a good leader does, he kept what worked. In this case it was keeping the overall strategy that Carly Fiorina had in place but he provided specific visionary purposes. He had to restructure divisions and ultimately lay off over 14,000 employees to maintain the company s budget goals. In the long run, Mark Hurd made the difficult decisions that needed to be made to bring the company back on track. His actions earned the trust of his employees and therefore I would conclude that he boosted the overall morale of his employees. References 1. Boxer, Barbara. (2010). The naturally rounded moon is contrasted to the manmade straight lines of the city. The pedestrian perspective and ominous scale places the audience between sharp towers. The environment and people that surrounded Georgia O Keeffe stimulates her to add it in her work. Specifically, Alfred Stieglitz was obviously a great influence in Georgia s life; being each others muse and benefactor. The 1926 painting The Shelton with Sunspots has photographic influences. The Bloc Québécois began as a leftist movement but quickly grew into a party by 1963; similarly, the Parti Québécois was formed in 1968. They mainly gained support because French Canadians believed their rights were being compromised by English Canadians. How Did Emily Dickinson s Life Influence Her Poetry Emily Dickinson Her Life and Poetry Emily Elizabeth Dickinson was born December 10, 1830, into an influential family in Amherst, Massachusetts. Her father helped found Amherst College, where Emily later attended between 1840 and 1846. She never married and died in the house where she was born on May 15, 1886. Emily Dickinson s reclusive life was arguably a result of her proposed bi polar disorder. This life and disorder unduly influenced the themes of her poetry. In one of Dickinson s most famous poems, I heard a Fly buzz, the theme of death is presented as well as a symptomatic characteristic of bi polar disorder. The poem itself epitomizes her preoccupation with death and the macabre and also shows how the small, normally ignorable sound of a fly buzzing becomes the only thing heard, she magnifies this sound in a situation when it seems that everything else is much more important, but this inability to drown out extraneous noises is typical of someone suffering from manic depression. The form of this poem employs all of Dickinson s formal patterns: trimeter and tetrameter iambic lines, her specific use of the dash to interrupt the meter of the poem, and it is in ABCB rhyme scheme.
