`` Weapons, Technology Determination And Ancient Warfare ``
Technological Determination and Hoplites
Logically, it makes sense that the army with the most advanced technology would win battles against a
less equipped one. However, in his paper titled Weapons, Technology Determination and Ancient
Warfare, Fernando Echeverria Rey brings to light the paradox of this idea in ancient warfare, as well
as undermine the modern idea of technological determinism by claiming that it does not have an
ancient equivalent. His argument approaches the study of ancient warfare from different perspectives
as he [offers] alternative ways to explain technological and tactical change in warfare (Echeverria
2010: 24). Echeverria Rey makes strong points for his arguments and supports his ideas clearly. While

While the political level and structural level entail that ancient communities were determined by
military factors (Echeverria 2010:22) and that these military factors produce and explain broader socio
political change (Echeverria 2010:22) respectively. By focusing in on the battlefield level in his paper,
Echeverria Rey stresses the distinction between these three levels and maintains clarity in his
argument. He supports his argument by also putting to the test the assumptions, that first some kinds
of weapons and tactics are objectively superior to others and that secondly, societies are always trying
to create or import such superior weapons and tactics (Echeverria 2010:24.) While hoplites may not be
the epidemy of ancient warfare technological innovation, they are an important part of the history of
ancient warfare and exemplify Echeverria Rey s argument.
A hoplite is commonly interpreted as the quintessential Greek heavy armed infantry man (Echeverria
2012:292). Originally, the hoplite soldiers were generally expected to provide his own arms and armor
(Bertosa 2003:361). Because of the monetary demand of being a hoplite soldier, a hoplite had to
provide their own equipment such as a spears or shields, the majority of early hoplites were wealthy
farm owners whose main goal was to protect their own land from enemies. The role of a hoplite was
critical in ancient civilization

Sara Pahlevaan Influence
Walking with a friend in the dark is better than walking alone in the light, an iconic quote, spoken by
Helen Keller, had a impeccable impact on me this year. Some people walk into your life and change it
for the better. That is what Sara Pahlevan did to me. Her kind, charismatic, and understanding
personality makes the whole world smile with her. Sara s influence on me has given me new insight
about the world around us. My first encounter with Sara was not unusual. Our first meeting was
during theater class, everybody sat down in chairs that were preset in a semicircle with our teacher at
the front. Since this was our first class, nobody knew each other. Since that was the case, everyone had
to stand up, say their name, and tell a fun

Analysis Of Interior Of The Pantheon, Roman By Giovanni...
Interior of the Pantheon, Rome (1734) is a remarkable painting by Giovanni Paolo Panini who is best
known for his prospects on Rome in which he focussed on the city s famous sites. His works largely
have a fancy and unreal adornment feature of capriccio themes. The Pantheon is a former Roman
temple which is now a church in Rome. It is one of the best preserved Ancient Roman Buildings
which is also popular for the geometric wonder that it is. It demonstrates the theory of 2:3 correlation
between the volume of a cylinder and a sphere. The Pantheon being one of the main tourist attractions
in Rome, Panini s depiction of this architectural model is populated with a lively mix of Romans and
other foreign visitors who are visiting the Pantheon to admire the marvellous architecture, chat, and to
pray. Panini being a trained expert in theatrical design and architecture has provided a larger view of
the interiors of Pantheon than what is possible in real from a single point. The viewpoint is intense
while it faces the entrance. Panini s attempt to show the bright blue sky through the oculus in the
centre of the dome just adds to the magnificence of the painting. The psychic line towards the sunlight
creates a soft feeling that is not too harsh on eyes but directs the vision to the right point. The ground
is a terracotta coloured layer that is reddish and contains several translucent white pigments to provide
a certain depth. The lines were incised using straightedge into the

The International Community And Responsibility To...
The International Community and Responsibility to Protect 3318 Words 14 Pages
The International Community has a Right to Intervene in Sovereign States in order to end Serious
Human Rights Abuses? Discuss.
Humanitarian intervention is definitely one of the most controversial subjects of the recent decades
among states, international organizations, non governmental organizations (NGOs) and academia. The
centre of the debate is the clash of traditional principles of state sovereignty and new adopted norms
on use of force for humanitarian purposes. Despite the political controversies between the countries,
humanitarian intervention is now an international norm which calls for action anytime there are
serious mass life threatening ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The discussion on humanitarian intervention emerged in the 1990s with the end of the Cold War and
severe ethnical violence taking place. However, the legal roots of humanitarian intervention are found
on Chapter VII of UN Charter and UN Convention on Prevention and Punishment of Genocide
(Charter of the United Nations and the Statute of International Court of Justice, 1945; Convention on
Genocide, 1948). With the second wave of democratization occurring from the late 1940s to 1960s it
was strongly embraced the concept of sovereignty by the new liberated states (Huntington, 1991).
Same concept is used currently as a counter argument to humanitarian intervention (J. Bajorja R.
McMahon, 2013). However, the co founders of ICISS argue ...that sovereign states are defined not by
the inviolability of their borders the assumption of the post colonial era but by their obligation to
protect their citizens (Homans, 2011).
Humanitarian intervention represents a revolution in the international law, as it challenges the old
Treaty of Westphalia (Treaty of Westphalia, 1648), which certified the domestic sovereignty of state
actors. This principle was also endorsed by the UN Charter in 1945 in the article 2(7), where it was
stated that nothing should authorize intervention in matters essentially within the domestic jurisdiction
of any state (Charter of the United Nations and the Statute of International Court of Justice, 1945, p.3).
However, Chapter VII grants

I Am Malala Research Paper
Imagine having no freedom, no control of your own life. Restrictions on everyday things that you or I

Good morning Miss Kokinovic and classmates.

This tests the person s abilities of which make it harder or easier conquer.

An important challenge that Malala overcame was when the Taliban came. They placed restrictions
like no listening to music, watching movies, dancing and not letting women go outside. One of the
biggest things they did was put a curfew in place, as Malala said The curfew took over our lives , this
posed a challenge for Malala because she did not have any freedom.
She referred to the Taliban as vampires, It seemed to us that the Taliban arrived in the night just like
vampires she said. By using this direct quote from Malala we can see that by comparing the Taliban to
vampires she is saying that they are remorseless people. Like vampires who essentially suck the life
out of people, the Taliban have rid girls like Malala of a quality of life by the restrictions they ve

Identity And The Identity Of Identity
We live in a world where we are constantly dealing with the question of identity. Here is one of many
definitions of the word Identity from the Merriam Webster dictionary, The relation established by
psychological identification Who am I? What am I doing here? What is my purpose in life? These are
frequently asked questions within the minds of teenagers and young adults. In this day and age, there
have been times where many teens and young adults have tried to find psychologically where they
belong in the world and where they might discover their identity. Some will try to find their identity in
other people, (i.e Celebrities, Singers, etc.) and others will find their identity in what they listen to, or
the movies they watch, and will try to take on those personas. Because in today s society it is easier to
mask who you are, rather than discover what you are capable of. In this discourse we are going to take
a look at some examples of identity, and how we can better understand the meaning of it and how we
can apply it to today.
Issue of Identity #1: In David Hume s Bundle Theory of The Self, he states that there is no fixed self
(or identity) but rather they are all mere perceptions. (Identities) Lust, love, hate, fear, sorrow,
according to Hume these are all mere perceptions that have nothing to do with the idea or impression
of self, but that it is something that we perceive to be feeling. And that we are all made up of
perceptions and each

The Human Heart
The human heart is slightly bigger than the size of ones fist. It is situated at a very safe place which is
between the cage bones, i.e., in the center of the chest. Usually it is slightly on the left side of the chest
but in rare cases, it can be found on the right side. Heart is responsible for the blood flow to every
single part of the body by constant contraction and relaxation of cardiac muscles. This is the reason
why we hear rhythmic beats all the time. Heart pumps the pure blood to the different parts of the body
and then takes the deoxygenated blood from all the parts to the lungs for oxygenation. Normally in a
minute the heart beats 72 times. Well, let s check out heart diagram for kids as well as for adults which

This maintains a proper one directional blood flow through out the process. Bicuspid valve is present
between the left atrium and left ventricle whereas tricuspid valve is present between the right atrium
and right ventricle. Pulmonary valve behaves as a gate which stops the back flow of blood from right
ventricle to the pulmonary artery which takes the deoxygenated blood to the lungs for purification.
Lastly the aortic valve, this valve plays an important role in stopping the back flow of the blood from
left ventricle to the aorta. Once the blood is transferred to the aorta it supplies the oxygenated blood to
different parts of the body.
Blood Vessels
Blood vessels are the blood carriers in a human body. These play a very vital role in the supply of
blood to various parts of the body. Blood vessels can be of two types, veins and arteries. All the veins
(except pulmonary vein) are involved in carrying the deoxygenated blood from various parts of the
body to the heart whereas all the arteries (except pulmonary artery) are involved in supplying
oxygenated blood from the heart to different parts of the body.
Functioning of the Heart
After getting familiar with the part let s check out the functions of the heart. Well, as we all know we
need oxygen to survive, but have you ever thought how this oxygen is supplied to different parts of the
body? This work is done with the help of heart. Heart plays a very important role in the supply of

The Goal Of Any Philosopher
The goal of any philosopher is to find what truth is. Truth is undeniable, and can be relied upon in any
circumstance, especially in the one thing that has real meaning life. Truth is essential to understanding
the world. All knowledge is based upon truth. The Idea of truth is first and for most a conviction of the
mind. The mind has an inclination to view something to be true, false; we are convicted to believe one
or the other. For example, if one were holding a model car that appears to be red, you can be
convinced it is red; you can also be convinced it is red, dark red, pink, or even burgundy. One s mind
can perceive the car in different ways; it is just the inclination of the mind. Another component of
truth is the property of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The pragmatic theory says, roughly, that our beliefs are true if they work; or to get us what we want.
The correspondence theory, considered the most popular of all theories of truth states truth is
determined only by how accurately it corresponds to the real world. For example if someone says It is
raining the statement can only be true it is actually raining outside. The correspondence theory
assumes, then, that there is a real world whose existence does not depend on our beliefs, thoughts, or
perceptions that is, it assumes that a real world exists and has always existed where or not we have
been around to believe it, think it , or perceive it ( Velasquez 403). The correspondence theory has had
a long history since Aristotle. Aristotle approached this theory in a simpler form discussed in his study
of Metaphysics, to say of what is that is, and of what is not that is not, is true. Presumably what
Aristotle meant is that if what a statement says corresponds to the real world it is true. Closer to our
time period, Bernard Russell, modern philosopher is a model example of a correspondence theorist.
He maintains that there is a realm of facts whose existence does not corresponds to us. What is
correspondence? Correspondence makes a belief true when it correlates to a fact in the real world such
as Chicago is in Illinois; this is true because it relates to the fact Chicago

Aldo Leopold The Land Pyramid
In his essay titled The Land Ethic, Aldo Leopold argues that humans should extend ethical behaviors
to the natural environment or in other words, the land. The author points out that, thus far, humans
have only acted ethically towards one another. However, he believes that it is time for humans also to
start to treat the environment with the same respect and dignity that we have for the members of our
own species. The author states that he is aware that we cannot entirely prevent utilizing nature as a
resource and a commodity. Nonetheless, he concludes that humans should have the responsibility to
take care of the environment and to assure its continued existence.
Leopold does not believe that humans are the inferior species, the conquerors of the land as he puts it.
Instead, he argues, humans are just plain citizens who simply share the planet with millions of other
species and who are a part of an intricate and sophisticated system that makes life possible for all
living beings. Nonetheless, he believes that in order for people to realize this, and for them to
recognize nature as valuable and worth loving, they must be able to envision it as a tangible object. To
make this possible, Leopold creates the idea of The Land Pyramid, whose purpose is to create a
mental image of the environment as a complex biotic mechanism. The food pyramid is comprised of
many layers. The bottom layer is the widest because it represents the species that are most abundant

A Single Day Exploration Of The Cambodian Angkor Temples...
I thought I would do a single day exploration of the Cambodian Angkor temples, thinking it was just
one or two piles of rocks I d be looking at, but I needed a three day pass to see all of them and I still
don t think I spent enough time. The sun was beating down hard and climbing the insanely steep stairs
of each temple was exhausting with the heavy camera equipment bag stuck to my sweat soaked back.
There is one hundred or so temples that were built between the ninth and fourteenth centuries and left
for the jungle to swallow and for people to pilfer. Some of the temples have massive trees that have
grown around and through the stone and now support some of the structures. It s fascinating to see the
thick web of roots cascading down over the walls of the carved stones. Piles of rubble that used to be
roofs lay everywhere and make me think, should I be walking under that unstable looking stone roof
that hasn t collapsed yet? Some of the stone walls are leaning so far over that walking beside them is
frightening. The movie Tomb Raider was filmed in one of the temples, a guide that works there told
me, just before he asked for fifteen dollars for twenty minutes of showing me the best spots to take my
pictures. After each drive to the next set of temples, I would climb out of the car and was greeted by
numerous vendors, all coveting the valuable American notes I was hiding in my pockets. You need

Its importance role of providing a platform for unions to negotiate and bargain with their respective
airlines has minimized or prevented the extent of the damages strikes have on the airline industry.
Strikes, such as the one by ALPA, have been proven to be disastrous with regard to public interest.
RLA s role cannot be taken lightly as an absence of such an act would be extremely detrimental to the
airline industry and ultimately, United States commerce.
Although the RLA has proven to be effective, it is not without its shortcomings. Its loopholes and
limitation can and will be exploited as proven in the case of FedEx. Hence, it has to constantly be
reviewed and amendments by the Federal Government and Congress have to be made to the act if it
were to stay relevant with the ever changing times. Workers should be making the rights on whether or

Roman Skepticism
Skepticism
Skepticism is the Western philosophical tradition that maintains that human beings can never arrive at
any kind of certain knowledge. Originating in Greece in the middle of the fourth century BC,
skepticism and its derivatives are based on the following principles:
There is no such thing as certainty in human knowledge.
All human knowledge is only probably true, that is, true most of the time, or not true.
Several non Western cultures have skeptical traditions, particularly Buddhist philosophy, but properly
speaking, skepticism refers only to a Greek philosophical tradition and its Greek, Roman, and
European derivatives.

While Socrates never claimed that knowledge is impossible, still, at his death, he never claimed to
have discovered any piece of knowledge whatsoever.
After its introduction into Greek culture at the end of the fourth century BC, skepticism influenced
nearly all other Greek philosophies. Both Hellenistic and Roman philosophies took it as a given that
certain knowledge was impossible; the focus of Greek and Roman philosophy, then, turned to
probable knowledge, that is, knowledge that is true most of the time.
Christianity, however, introduced a dilemma into Greek and Roman philosophies that were primarily
based on skeptical principles. In many ways, the philosophy of Christianity, which insisted on an
absolute knowledge of the divine and of ethics, did not fit the Greek and Roman skeptical emphasis on
probable knowledge. Paul of Tarsus, one of the original founders of Christianity, answered this
question simply: the knowledge of the Romans and Greeks, that is, human knowledge, is the
knowledge of fools. Knowledge that rejects human reasoning, which, after all, leads to skepticism, is
the knowledge of the wise. Christianity at its inception, then, had a strong anti rational perspective.
This did not, however, make the skeptical problem go away. Much of the history of early Christian
philosophy is an attempt to paste Greek and Roman philosophical methods and questions onto

In this article, Radka Minarechová addresses the growing challenges associated with the fastest aging
population in one of the European Union countries, known as Slovakia. As the elderly population
increased, the productive working age deceased, which caused the country to suffer greatly based on
their involvement in employment, society, independent living and aging prevention. It becomes clear
that the country was not prepared to solve problems dealing with aging. As a result, it is shown that
discrimination towards the elderly by the others within the population is discovered within specific
areas such as health care and employment. With the retirement age at 62, the more individuals
requesting for pensions, the greater the effect on the contribution to the funds necessary for the benefit
of the recipient, especially healthcare. The subject of aging is highly relevant to Zimmerman s article.
The need to improve the aging phases every individual experiences is a serious issue that can be
resolved or reduced. Although Minarechová s argument does not focus directly on the health concerns
dealing with aging, but the author touched the important subject of how it can affect our population
rather than benefit us as a society. Not only is the topic relevant to Zimmerman s argument but it was
written around the same time. Therefore, there is a high

Automobiles and the American Society
The Automobile and American Society
Before the invention of the automobile, travel was a very difficult thing. Horses and carriages were
needed to transport a person from one place to another. Consequently, many people lived their entire
lives without travelling much further than the outskirts of the village or town in which they were born.
Since there was little travel, locations which had attracted enough people grew into large metropolitan
cities where anything that a person needed could be obtained within a short distance from their front
doors. The large cities attracted even more people because these then became the locations where the
most profitable jobs could be found. Once employment was found, the person would move into the
city and raise their family who would then contribute to the growth of the city. This is how things were
until the automobile was invented. Few people who first encountered the machine could know that it
would forever change the geographic and sociological makeup of the United States of America, but
that is what it did. Trains had already been invented and people could travel from one side of the
country to the other, but they could only go to the destinations which had railroad lines. The
automobile gave the individual the ability to choose their own destination both physically and
metaphorically. By the end of the 1920s more than 26 million cars were produced, one for
approximately every five people of the United States (Faragher 2009,

Terrarium Essay
At the point when summer gets to be simply a memory, and the garden has gone to rest for the winter,
numerous gardeners return to indoor mode . While looking after house plants and taking care of them
is to some extent fulfilling, a potted plant sitting alone, on a table is just not the same as a garden

through Plant Terrariums or Terraria.

sometimes a glass top or lid so that the plants can be seen, arranged in a way to keep plants or

ANALYSIS OF THE TRIP
Have you ever been so excited for something that you literally cannot wait? Of course you have, I m
sure you have been really excited the night before Christmas. That same feeling is what I have while
planning and waiting for trips to happen. Some people can get a sort of high from anticipating a trip,
just like the night before your 21st birthday. This is just one of three different phases you can go
through during a trip: Anticipation, Experience Perceived Experience.

Jim Crow Laws Affect African Americans
What are Jim Crow Laws and How Did They Affect African Americans?
Jim Crow laws were repressive laws enacted by White Southern Democrats that targeted emancipated
slaves. These laws drew into effect not long after the Civil War because many Whites didn t see
former slaves as equal citizens. Most Whites thought a Blacks only purpose was to work as a slave,
which resulted in a lack of respect for the Black people. These Jim Crow laws repressed Black people
from having all the same rights that White people had; Blacks lost almost all their rights after
emancipation and were pushed back into subjugation. Jim Crow laws made it difficult for blacks to
exercise their rights in the south after the Civil War. Jim Crow became a slang term for Black people,
resulting in the segregation laws being called Jim Crow Laws. The name Jim Crow originated from a
play made back in 1828. The play was called Jump Jim Crow and it starred a white actor named
Thomas Dartmouth Daddy Rice. Thomas would cover his face with black paint and make fun of Black
people and their ignorance. The play was very popular which helped the name catch on so easily with
the public and spread the assumptions that Blacks weren t equal citizens. One important right a citizen
will exercise is the right to vote. Powerful people used different strategies to stop blacks from voting,
because it was believed the Black vote would take power away from White voters and could change

Hydrates Lab
The properties of hydrates lab centralized on discovering the characteristics of hydrates, such as the
percentage of water contained, determining if dehydration is reversible or not, as well as the
mathematical relationship of mass lost during dehydration. Hydrates contain water molecules in their
crystalline structure these molecules possess the capability of being removed by heat. By applying
water to the dehydrated substance, it can then be determined if the reaction is irreversible or not. This
could be applied to the real world in terms of dehydrated food. According to CK 12, by removing
water from food, commonly referred to as MREs (Meals Ready to Eat), an individual is capable of

The substance evolved some in the form of color, turning from blue to white, however it s overall
consistency remained the same, despite the difference in mass. Conversely, some substances such as
Epsom salt, do not undergo such a drastic alteration during the transformation to an anhydrous state.
Due to the transformation of the hydrated copper sulfate to its original color upon adding water, it can
be concluded that some hydrates do possess the capability of being rehydrated after dehydration and
vice versa. Yet other substances, like sugar, do not possess this capability due to the fact its overall
structure was changed upon applying heat. Applying heat to sugar involves the removal of water and
an overall breakdown of the substance. Once broken down, the sugar does not possess the capability
of reverting back to its original granule state, so it is an irreversible

Why I Want To Be A Society Of Trout Persuasive Essay
I would like to participate in the Society of Fellows because I am a lover of philosophy and it seems as

Society of Fellows examines the American Constitution, the same way my Constitutional Rights class

Toyota s Lean Manufacturing Process
Prior to Toyota s Production System, the company was efficient, yet could not compete with large
American competitors such as General Motors and Ford. Therefore, management realized that if the
company was to be successful not only in Japan, but globally it would need to improve its
manufacturing process. Consequently, the company developed Toyota s lean manufacturing process,
which is still used today. The LMP was used to eliminate waste in the entire production process to
become more responsive to market demand and produce high quality products economically. In order
to provide superior products, Toyota implemented many revolutionary strategies. For example, the
company started, or invented, the Just in Time Manufacturing process. The JIT process, according to
our text, is used to reduce inventory costs by scheduling supplies to arrive just in time to enter the
production process or as inventory stock is depleted (Hill et al., 2015). Toyota used the just in time
system to improve its supply chain management, which drastically decreased costs and increased the
company s production facilities output as compared to its competitors. In addition to JIT, the company
introduced a concept known as Kanban that was included within the new JIT system. The Kanban
system was developed by Ohno and was used to arrange for components and/or assemblies
manufactured at Toyota to be delivered to the assembly floor only when needed, not before (Hill et al.,
2015). Essentially the Kanban

different areas of Peoria are going to differ on their crime rate based on the class level that lives there

Cause And Effects Of Climate Change
The Living Planet report calculates that humans are using 30% more resources than the Earth can
replenish each year (Jowit, 2008). Despite this shocking information, the scientific community around
the world are not focus only on a future lack of resources, but also with the possible cause and effects
of climate change. Both topics are directly related with the future of human life. Since people need the
nature to provide them food, fresh water and material to produce their daily thing, the lack of
resources is a reality. In addition, according to the article The Consequences of Climate Change
published by NASA scientists had predicted loos of sea ice, accelerated sea level rise and longer, more
intense heat waves as some the effects of climate change by 2100 (NASA, n.d.). Thus, it is clear that
there is an agreement that both issues will seriously affect the future of humanity. However, the
scientific community has doubts about which of these themes is crucial for the survival of human
beings. Taking into account how quickly the natural resources have been consumed, the effects will be
felt earlier than the climate change outcomes. When it comes to the environment, in this specific case
about climate change and the depletion of natural resources, reflection on how these issues relate to
and influence human life is inevitable. In the case of climate change, for example, the article Climate

Western Classical And Classical Music
A plethora of sweet melodies flowing together into one cohesive song, sharps and flats bouncing off
one another like a child on a trampoline, and notes oozing so much legato you would assume the
pianist transformed into a robot. What genre exudes those characteristics? Western classical music.
Western classical music is broken down into six categories in order for it to be easily identifiable
chronologically. The six categories are the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Baroque Age, the
Classical Period, the Romantic Era, and the Twentieth Century. The earliest form of Western music
originates from the Medieval time period of c.1150 c.1400, and the most recent time period is the
music post from the Great War, which spans from 1920c. Present. It was during the Baroque Age, the
Classical Period, the Romantic Era, and the Twentieth Century that many of the famous composers,
whose songs are still recognized today composed pieces. The mark these impeccable composers left
on the world of music will forever be recognized, which is one of the reasons I applaud classical
music. I am impressed by Western classical music because of its depth, clarity, and variety.
First, Western classical music has an immense amount of depth. A pianist and composer from the
Classical Period such as, Wolfgang Mozart is particularly famous for adding layers upon layers of
melodies within his pieces. One of Mozart s most successful pieces, the piano sonata No. 14 in C

They have a name in the rave community, they are tweakers. Tweaking, the common name for sniffing

A prominent opinion during the aftermath of the Los Angeles Summer of Love was that speed killed

reason it was shocking for some to see methamphetamine take hold, even though MDMA (an

What Is The Growth Of Poverty In Canada
The article The Growth of Poverty and Social Inequality: Losing Faith in Social Justice by Ann Duffy

important information I got from this article is how intersectionality largely effects poverty in Canada.
From children to women to disabled, the article showed how each group is more affected by poverty
than their counter parts. I believe it is important to acknowledge the different groups and how poverty
affects them separately, as well as how poverty affects them when they are intersected. Canada is one
of the wealthiest countries in the world, however, many citizens are below the blurred poverty line.

resources for those below the poverty line are very poor; food banks and shelters are unable to uphold
the amount of people that are in need of them. (252). Among the poor, many people have paid
employment, however, it is not enough. Poverty in Canada is largely based on intersectionality; how

These aspects include, increase of poverty if the child is in a lone parent household (even higher if the
lone parent is female), if the child is indigenous, a recent immigrant or disabled (256/257?). It is hard
to think of a solution of poverty that will help people defeat poverty. I believe that if society stopped
grouping people into categories such as female, indigenous, disabled, etc. than intersectionality would
have less of an effect on poverty then it does now. It is important that intersectionality not have such a
powerful affect on people s poverty status because it is unfair to those who are below the poverty line

The Consequences Of Alcohol Analysis
Alcohol is a very widely used drug, and is therefore present in many clinical and forensic toxicology
cases. Quantitation of alcohol levels in patients affects the clinical treatment they receive as well as
any legal consequences associated with the incident that led to their hospitalization. Alcohol analysis
and its consequences for postmortem cases also forms a large part of the forensic toxicologist s
workload [1 2].
Although gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GCMS) or gas chromatography flame ionization
detection (GC FID) is the most accurate and reliable method of determining blood alcohol
concentration (BAC), it is expensive, time consuming, and requires technical proficiency manhours [1

However, there is still contention over its existence, prevalence, and severity; this is evidenced by
recent articles and court cases contesting its relevance [3,7] . It is problematic that almost every
mention of this phenomenon goes back to a single study in 1995 that failed to put the issue to rest [6].
Forensically, this research has multiple implications. The presence and level of alcohol in a victim or
perpetrator s system has great bearing on their behavior and frame of mind. As a result, the amount of
alcohol in a person s blood can serve as a strong piece of evidence. From a sentencing standpoint, the
level of legal consequences assigned to an individual is also be dependent on the amount of
intoxication detected [1]. With these consequences in mind, it is imperative that the test used to
measure ethanol levels is reliable and accurate. If there is a possibility that the enzymatic assays used
widely throughout hospitals can be inaccurate under certain conditions, it is necessary that the users
and interpreters of those assays know that interference can occur and when it might happen. If markers
can be developed to determine when further testing for ethanol should be done, the reliability of the
test will be greatly increased. In this study, the aim will be to determine if lactate and LDH in
clinically possible antemortem concentrations can cause a significant

Montessori Method Of Education
Montessori Method of Education is one of the unique methods of the education which stimulates the
child s natural curiosity to learn. Culture and creativity area an integral part of the Montessori
curriculum. Every area of the Montessori curriculum is interrelated and follows the same foundations.
Each area of curriculum has special purpose of education and helps the child in stimulating their
imaginative powers. Montessori Method strongly believes that imagination is based on the reality
based experiences and creativity is directly related to exposing the children to real life situations. So,
we can say that in order to be more imaginative and creative, child must have real and concrete
experiences with the real objects.
According to Maria Montessori, The true basis of the imagination is reality, and its perception is
related to exactness of observation. It is necessary to prepare children to perceive the things in their
environment exactly, in order to secure for them the material required by the imagination. Intelligence,
reasoning, and distinguishing one thing from another prepares a cement for imaginative constructions

child is allowed to learn in his own unique manner at his own pace. Every aspect of the Montessori

The Mexican Mafia And Organized Crime
The Mexican Mafia, or La Eme , as they refer to themselves, is one of the most powerful and
influential organized crime gangs in the United States. The organization has risen through the decades
of mass gang wars and violence to become the power it is today. Their control is limitless and they
have ventured far beyond the expectations of what was thought that gangs were capable of. They have
infiltrated governments and manipulated politics. They have taken over neighborhoods and attempted
to ethnically cleanse them. Innocent people have become caught up in the affairs of La Eme
throughout its history and many have faced violence and death at their hands. This paper is a continual
of the case analysis of the Mexican Mafia and will attempt to provide explanations for some of the
crimes committed by this organization. Researching gangs and organized crime is important because
of their large influence and control over many aspects of daily life. The significance of attempting to
provide causations of their crimes can better provide the criminal justice system a clearer
understanding of problems that lead to gang members committing crimes on behalf of the
organization. A clearer understanding of problems can help the system to provide solutions to combat
situations that inhibit crimes.

When they go to war and are away from normal life for so long they develop a disease call PTSD

often refer to golf to help them cope with their problems. They get a sense of relief when they are out
on the range hitting balls or they are with their friends playing on the course. In the US their are
organizations call Wounded Warrior project where they host tournaments around the country to help
veterans who need help. There are also organizations such as Fairways for Warriors which bring
veterans out with their families to take lessons and take away from their problems. They go out and
get lessons from local PGA pros and other volunteers. This is one thing that is on the rise in the United

Stomy Car Research Paper
Tackling the Problem of Stinky Cars
Everybody loves that new car scent but it is to be expected that it will wear off after some time. It will
even get replaced by the smell of shopping bags, pet odour, perspiration, smoke and more. It can be an
uncomfortable and unpleasant experience to sit inside a stinky vehicle and removing the stench will
not be an easy job. However, with the right amount of effort and patience, you can breathe easier in
your car.
Find the root of the problem
Odours can originate from different sources so you should be sure to thoroughly check the interiors of
your vehicle. Start by inspecting the floors, seat corners, back pockets, trunk, glove compartment, and
so on. Depending on the make and model of your vehicle, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Next, treat the upholstery with a stain remover. If you find any visible stains, saturate the surface then
use cleaning tools to loosen the dirt. Our upholstery cleaner here at 1DryWash can be particularly
helpful for this so you might want to check it out. Oh and be sure to completely dry the upholstery
once you are done cleaning to avoid the growth of mould.
Pick your odour elimination method
Even after cleaning the interior, some smells will remain so further your efforts by using household
products to absorb the stench. You can perhaps leave an open container of dryer sheets beneath the
seats for instant relief. Or maybe you can sprinkle baking soda on the upholstery then use a vacuum to
collect the substance after half a day or so. A bag of charcoal briquettes can be pretty handy for this
purpose too.
Try to prevent it in the future
Now that you have worked to get rid of the odours in the interior, you should take preventative
measures so you will not have to deal with the same problem again. If you will be eating in your
vehicle, avoid leaving any containers and remove any leftovers. When a spill or something similar
occurs, clean it up right away to avoid stubborn stains or residue that will build up over time. Also,
think about how the weather can affect items in your car. Exposure to high levels of heat can melt
certain items and cause unusual scents

  • 3. `` Weapons, Technology Determination And Ancient Warfare `` Technological Determination and Hoplites Logically, it makes sense that the army with the most advanced technology would win battles against a less equipped one. However, in his paper titled Weapons, Technology Determination and Ancient Warfare, Fernando Echeverria Rey brings to light the paradox of this idea in ancient warfare, as well as undermine the modern idea of technological determinism by claiming that it does not have an ancient equivalent. His argument approaches the study of ancient warfare from different perspectives as he [offers] alternative ways to explain technological and tactical change in warfare (Echeverria 2010: 24). While the political level and structural level entail that ancient communities were determined by military factors (Echeverria 2010:22) and that these military factors produce and explain broader socio political change (Echeverria 2010:22) respectively. By focusing in on the battlefield level in his paper, Echeverria Rey stresses the distinction between these three levels and maintains clarity in his argument. He supports his argument by also putting to the test the assumptions, that first some kinds of weapons and tactics are objectively superior to others and that secondly, societies are always trying to create or import such superior weapons and tactics (Echeverria 2010:24.) While hoplites may not be the epidemy of ancient warfare technological innovation, they are an important part of the history of ancient warfare and exemplify Echeverria Rey s argument. A hoplite is commonly interpreted as the quintessential Greek heavy armed infantry man (Echeverria 2012:292). Originally, the hoplite soldiers were generally expected to provide his own arms and armor (Bertosa 2003:361). Because of the monetary demand of being a hoplite soldier, a hoplite had to provide their own equipment such as a spears or shields, the majority of early hoplites were wealthy farm owners whose main goal was to protect their own land from enemies. • 5. Analysis Of Interior Of The Pantheon, Roman By Giovanni... Interior of the Pantheon, Rome (1734) is a remarkable painting by Giovanni Paolo Panini who is best known for his prospects on Rome in which he focussed on the city s famous sites. His works largely have a fancy and unreal adornment feature of capriccio themes. The Pantheon is a former Roman temple which is now a church in Rome. It is one of the best preserved Ancient Roman Buildings which is also popular for the geometric wonder that it is. It demonstrates the theory of 2:3 correlation between the volume of a cylinder and a sphere. The Pantheon being one of the main tourist attractions in Rome, Panini s depiction of this architectural model is populated with a lively mix of Romans and other foreign visitors who are visiting the Pantheon to admire the marvellous architecture, chat, and to pray. Panini being a trained expert in theatrical design and architecture has provided a larger view of the interiors of Pantheon than what is possible in real from a single point. The viewpoint is intense while it faces the entrance. Panini s attempt to show the bright blue sky through the oculus in the centre of the dome just adds to the magnificence of the painting. The psychic line towards the sunlight creates a soft feeling that is not too harsh on eyes but directs the vision to the right point. The ground is a terracotta coloured layer that is reddish and contains several translucent white pigments to provide a certain depth. The lines were incised using straightedge into the ... The International Community and Responsibility to Protect 3318 Words 14 Pages The International Community has a Right to Intervene in Sovereign States in order to end Serious Human Rights Abuses? Discuss. Humanitarian intervention is definitely one of the most controversial subjects of the recent decades among states, international organizations, non governmental organizations (NGOs) and academia. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The discussion on humanitarian intervention emerged in the 1990s with the end of the Cold War and severe ethnical violence taking place. However, the legal roots of humanitarian intervention are found on Chapter VII of UN Charter and UN Convention on Prevention and Punishment of Genocide (Charter of the United Nations and the Statute of International Court of Justice, 1945; Convention on Genocide, 1948). With the second wave of democratization occurring from the late 1940s to 1960s it was strongly embraced the concept of sovereignty by the new liberated states (Huntington, 1991). Same concept is used currently as a counter argument to humanitarian intervention (J. Bajorja R. McMahon, 2013). However, the co founders of ICISS argue ...that sovereign states are defined not by the inviolability of their borders the assumption of the post colonial era but by their obligation to protect their citizens (Homans, 2011). Humanitarian intervention represents a revolution in the international law, as it challenges the old Treaty of Westphalia (Treaty of Westphalia, 1648), which certified the domestic sovereignty of state actors. This principle was also endorsed by the UN Charter in 1945 in the article 2(7), where it was stated that nothing should authorize intervention in matters essentially within the domestic jurisdiction of any state (Charter of the United Nations and the Statute of International Court of Justice, 1945, p.3). Here is one of many definitions of the word Identity from the Merriam Webster dictionary, The relation established by psychological identification Who am I? What am I doing here? What is my purpose in life? These are frequently asked questions within the minds of teenagers and young adults. In this day and age, there have been times where many teens and young adults have tried to find psychologically where they belong in the world and where they might discover their identity. Some will try to find their identity in other people, (i.e Celebrities, Singers, etc.) and others will find their identity in what they listen to, or the movies they watch, and will try to take on those personas. Because in today s society it is easier to mask who you are, rather than discover what you are capable of. In this discourse we are going to take a look at some examples of identity, and how we can better understand the meaning of it and how we can apply it to today. Issue of Identity #1: In David Hume s Bundle Theory of The Self, he states that there is no fixed self (or identity) but rather they are all mere perceptions. (Identities) Lust, love, hate, fear, sorrow, according to Hume these are all mere perceptions that have nothing to do with the idea or impression of self, but that it is something that we perceive to be feeling. Heart is responsible for the blood flow to every single part of the body by constant contraction and relaxation of cardiac muscles. This is the reason why we hear rhythmic beats all the time. Heart pumps the pure blood to the different parts of the body and then takes the deoxygenated blood from all the parts to the lungs for oxygenation. Normally in a minute the heart beats 72 times. Bicuspid valve is present between the left atrium and left ventricle whereas tricuspid valve is present between the right atrium and right ventricle. Pulmonary valve behaves as a gate which stops the back flow of blood from right ventricle to the pulmonary artery which takes the deoxygenated blood to the lungs for purification. Lastly the aortic valve, this valve plays an important role in stopping the back flow of the blood from left ventricle to the aorta. Once the blood is transferred to the aorta it supplies the oxygenated blood to different parts of the body. Blood Vessels Blood vessels are the blood carriers in a human body. • 12. The Goal Of Any Philosopher The goal of any philosopher is to find what truth is. Truth is undeniable, and can be relied upon in any circumstance, especially in the one thing that has real meaning life. Truth is essential to understanding the world. All knowledge is based upon truth. The Idea of truth is first and for most a conviction of the mind. The mind has an inclination to view something to be true, false; we are convicted to believe one or the other. For example, if one were holding a model car that appears to be red, you can be convinced it is red; you can also be convinced it is red, dark red, pink, or even burgundy. One s mind can perceive the car in different ways; it is just the inclination of the mind. Another component of truth is the property of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The pragmatic theory says, roughly, that our beliefs are true if they work; or to get us what we want. The correspondence theory, considered the most popular of all theories of truth states truth is determined only by how accurately it corresponds to the real world. For example if someone says It is raining the statement can only be true it is actually raining outside. The correspondence theory assumes, then, that there is a real world whose existence does not depend on our beliefs, thoughts, or perceptions that is, it assumes that a real world exists and has always existed where or not we have been around to believe it, think it , or perceive it ( Velasquez 403). The correspondence theory has had a long history since Aristotle. Aristotle approached this theory in a simpler form discussed in his study of Metaphysics, to say of what is that is, and of what is not that is not, is true. Presumably what Aristotle meant is that if what a statement says corresponds to the real world it is true. Closer to our time period, Bernard Russell, modern philosopher is a model example of a correspondence theorist. He maintains that there is a realm of facts whose existence does not corresponds to us. What is correspondence? Correspondence makes a belief true when it correlates to a fact in the real world such as Chicago is in Illinois; this is true because it relates to the fact Chicago ... • 14. Aldo Leopold The Land Pyramid In his essay titled The Land Ethic, Aldo Leopold argues that humans should extend ethical behaviors to the natural environment or in other words, the land. The author points out that, thus far, humans have only acted ethically towards one another. However, he believes that it is time for humans also to start to treat the environment with the same respect and dignity that we have for the members of our own species. The author states that he is aware that we cannot entirely prevent utilizing nature as a resource and a commodity. Nonetheless, he concludes that humans should have the responsibility to take care of the environment and to assure its continued existence. Leopold does not believe that humans are the inferior species, the conquerors of the land as he puts it. Instead, he argues, humans are just plain citizens who simply share the planet with millions of other species and who are a part of an intricate and sophisticated system that makes life possible for all living beings. Nonetheless, he believes that in order for people to realize this, and for them to recognize nature as valuable and worth loving, they must be able to envision it as a tangible object. To make this possible, Leopold creates the idea of The Land Pyramid, whose purpose is to create a mental image of the environment as a complex biotic mechanism. The food pyramid is comprised of many layers. The bottom layer is the widest because it represents the species that are most abundant such as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The sun was beating down hard and climbing the insanely steep stairs of each temple was exhausting with the heavy camera equipment bag stuck to my sweat soaked back. All human knowledge is only probably true, that is, true most of the time, or not true. While Socrates never claimed that knowledge is impossible, still, at his death, he never claimed to have discovered any piece of knowledge whatsoever. After its introduction into Greek culture at the end of the fourth century BC, skepticism influenced nearly all other Greek philosophies. Both Hellenistic and Roman philosophies took it as a given that certain knowledge was impossible; the focus of Greek and Roman philosophy, then, turned to probable knowledge, that is, knowledge that is true most of the time. Christianity, however, introduced a dilemma into Greek and Roman philosophies that were primarily based on skeptical principles. In many ways, the philosophy of Christianity, which insisted on an absolute knowledge of the divine and of ethics, did not fit the Greek and Roman skeptical emphasis on probable knowledge. Paul of Tarsus, one of the original founders of Christianity, answered this question simply: the knowledge of the Romans and Greeks, that is, human knowledge, is the knowledge of fools. Knowledge that rejects human reasoning, which, after all, leads to skepticism, is the knowledge of the wise. Christianity at its inception, then, had a strong anti rational perspective. As the elderly population increased, the productive working age deceased, which caused the country to suffer greatly based on their involvement in employment, society, independent living and aging prevention. It becomes clear that the country was not prepared to solve problems dealing with aging. As a result, it is shown that discrimination towards the elderly by the others within the population is discovered within specific areas such as health care and employment. With the retirement age at 62, the more individuals requesting for pensions, the greater the effect on the contribution to the funds necessary for the benefit of the recipient, especially healthcare. • 23. Automobiles and the American Society The Automobile and American Society Before the invention of the automobile, travel was a very difficult thing. Horses and carriages were needed to transport a person from one place to another. Consequently, many people lived their entire lives without travelling much further than the outskirts of the village or town in which they were born. Since there was little travel, locations which had attracted enough people grew into large metropolitan cities where anything that a person needed could be obtained within a short distance from their front doors. The large cities attracted even more people because these then became the locations where the most profitable jobs could be found. Once employment was found, the person would move into the city and raise their family who would then contribute to the growth of the city. This is how things were until the automobile was invented. Few people who first encountered the machine could know that it would forever change the geographic and sociological makeup of the United States of America, but that is what it did. Trains had already been invented and people could travel from one side of the country to the other, but they could only go to the destinations which had railroad lines. The automobile gave the individual the ability to choose their own destination both physically and metaphorically. Jim Crow laws were repressive laws enacted by White Southern Democrats that targeted emancipated slaves. These laws drew into effect not long after the Civil War because many Whites didn t see former slaves as equal citizens. Most Whites thought a Blacks only purpose was to work as a slave, which resulted in a lack of respect for the Black people. These Jim Crow laws repressed Black people from having all the same rights that White people had; Blacks lost almost all their rights after emancipation and were pushed back into subjugation. Jim Crow laws made it difficult for blacks to exercise their rights in the south after the Civil War. Jim Crow became a slang term for Black people, resulting in the segregation laws being called Jim Crow Laws. The name Jim Crow originated from a play made back in 1828. The play was called Jump Jim Crow and it starred a white actor named Thomas Dartmouth Daddy Rice. Thomas would cover his face with black paint and make fun of Black people and their ignorance. The play was very popular which helped the name catch on so easily with the public and spread the assumptions that Blacks weren t equal citizens. I believe the most important information I got from this article is how intersectionality largely effects poverty in Canada. From children to women to disabled, the article showed how each group is more affected by poverty than their counter parts. I believe it is important to acknowledge the different groups and how poverty affects them separately, as well as how poverty affects them when they are intersected. The poverty line in Canada is measured by the LICO IAT (boooook) and the MBM (253). However, there is still contention over its existence, prevalence, and severity; this is evidenced by recent articles and court cases contesting its relevance [3,7] . It is problematic that almost every mention of this phenomenon goes back to a single study in 1995 that failed to put the issue to rest [6]. Forensically, this research has multiple implications. The presence and level of alcohol in a victim or perpetrator s system has great bearing on their behavior and frame of mind. With these consequences in mind, it is imperative that the test used to measure ethanol levels is reliable and accurate. If there is a possibility that the enzymatic assays used widely throughout hospitals can be inaccurate under certain conditions, it is necessary that the users and interpreters of those assays know that interference can occur and when it might happen. If markers can be developed to determine when further testing for ethanol should be done, the reliability of the test will be greatly increased. In this study, the aim will be to determine if lactate and LDH in clinically possible antemortem concentrations can cause a significant ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
