Substitution reactions are important chemical processes that contribute to the production of new
compounds. Simplistically, these reactions take place through a series of steps in which one functional
group is replaced by another (March). There are two types of nucleophilic substitution reactions, first
order and second order, but this experiment only involves the Sn1 first order reactions. Sn1 reactions
are considered unimolecular meaning that only one molecule is involved in the rate determining step,
the slowest step of the reaction which determines the overall speed of the reaction. In contrast, Sn2
reactions are considered bimolecular, and complete the substitution reaction in one step. The main
components of these reactions are the nucleophile and the leaving group; a nucleophile replaces the
leaving group by donating its electrons to form a new bond to the carbon (Weldegirma). For this
experiment, the nucleophiles and leaving groups of the Sn1 reactions are alkyl halides and alcohols
respectively. When a hydrogen atom is replaced by halogen in an alkane, the resulting compound is

The Mind And Brain Work
One of Smarts main points is that a man is a vast arrangement of physical particles, but not, over and
above this, sensations or state of consciousness. (Pg.584). What I took from this point was that Smart
was trying to express that the mind isn t some sort of thing that exists separate from the brain. The
mind at most exists within the brain but isn t some kind of physical thing or separate existence within
us. I believe that the mind and brain work together and have a connection but they do not exist as the
same thing. If everything were just measurable brain processes we would all act and feel the exact
same way about every experience. We wouldn t use our consciousness to differ between what is right

A cornerstone work in the world of graphic novels, Alan Moore s Watchmen provides a rich plot for

attempted rape of Silk Spectre. At that point in time, no other source of identity has been given, so for
the duration of the novel, the reader must absorb all new information knowing the evil he is capable
of, and has committed. In providing a negative first impression of the Comedian, Moore forces readers
to subconsciously interpret any new information presented about him in a dark light, and in doing so,
suggests that redemption is not possible for Blake. In addition, the juxtaposition of Blake as a hero
who first appears as a rapist forces the reader to take into question
