!!!The Devil: H. H. Holmes and The Murder Castle
Dr. H. H. Holmes is one of the two main figures in The Devil in the White City . Born Herman
Webster Mudgett in 1861, Holmes was a shady character from the beginning. While studying
medicine and surgery at the University of Michigan, he stole bodies from the university s laboratory,
mutilated them, and reported their deaths as accidents so he could collect on the insurance policies he
had taken out on the dead. Around the time that he arrived in Chicago, Holmes began using his
famous __alias__, or false name, Dr. H. H. Holmes.
Upon arriving in Chicago in 1886, Holmes set himself up in business as a pharmacist. In 1893,
sensing a once in a lifetime business opportunity, he opened a hotel, which he called the World s Fair
Hotel. The building would become notorious as Holmes s Murder Castle.
Holmes s hotel was an impenetrable maze of more than 100 windowless rooms, dead end hallways,
and doors opening to nowhere. To ensure that he alone understood the overall plan of the building,
Holmes constantly hired and fired building crews, keeping anyone from working on the Murder Castle
for too long.
Holmes murdered dozens perhaps hundreds of people who stayed in his hotel while they were in
Chicago to attend the World s Fair. His victims were primarily women, but he preyed occasionally on
men and children as well. His Murder Castle was specially

Causes Of The Decline Of Labor Unions
Introduction Labor unions became very prevalent during the Progressive Era when positions in
factories were readily available but also steadily dangerous. Unions were drafted in order to protect
the rights of workers regarding safety, wages, and benefits. It wasn t until about the 1980 s when labor
unions started to face a real decline and lack of memberships. In my opinion I believe the lack of
manufacturing jobs in the US, newly implemented public policies, and increased lobbying from
corporations are the root causes of the decline. Loss of US Manufacturing I believe a contributing
factor as to why labor unions are on a steep decline in the US today is because the country s
manufacturing sector has become obsolete. Specifically speaking ... Show more content on

Corporations sought to completely disband unions or at least severely weaken. According to Collins,
2015 it worked very well and in the last 30 years they have been very successful at either blocking or
weakening any legislation that would help unions or collective bargaining (p. 2). As unions became
weaker corporations acted by refusing to meet any of their requests regarding higher wages or
benefits. They even went as far to hire strike breakers. Once a job lock out began or a strike ensued
strike breakers were hired to replace union workers (Collins, 2015). After the strike subsided this left
many people without work. The hiring of strike breakers gained popularity and effectiveness so much
that unions became reluctant to continue their striking. For comparison purposes 371 strikes took
place in 1970 and only 11 occurred in 2010 (Collins,

Landing Zone Our next customer is a global leader in consumer transaction technologies, turning
everyday interactions with businesses into exceptional experiences. With the software, hardware, and
portfolio of services, this company makes nearly 550 million transactions possible daily. This
company s motto is to help their customers respond to the demand for fast, easy and convenient
transactions with intuitive self service and assisted service options. But what they do goes beyond
niche technologies or markets. Their solutions help businesses around the world increase revenue,
build loyalty, reach new customers, and lower their costs of operations. By continually learning about
and pioneering how the world interacts and transacts, this global leader is helping companies not only
reach their goals, but also change the way all of us shop, eat, travel, bank, and connect. They include
thousands of banks and retailers that depend upon tens of thousands of self service kiosks, point of
sale (POS) terminals, ATMs (automated teller machines), and barcode scanners, among other
equipment. Traditional Approach In the traditional architecture, this customer could only collect a
snapshot of data, which limited the accuracy of its predictive models. For example, the company
might collect snapshots from a sampling of ATMs (perhaps once daily performance data) where the
real need is to collect the entire set. In addition, this company needed to avoid downtime for its clients

The Influence of advertisement on contemporary society
Shafiq 1
In our media rich society, we see advertisements every day. Their appearance happens at numerous
places ranging from cereal boxes to television screens, as well as public buses. Most advertisement
often conveys an unrealistic view of the product. While it is a mass marketing technique to make the
consumer buy the product, but most of us believe whatever advertised is true without giving a second
thought to it. In our contemporary society, it has become very hard to escape the influence of such
advertisements. These advertisements affect us in shopping malls, while watching televisions as well
as in food places.
Advertising has enormous impact on us in shopping malls. Almost no trip to the mall has ever been
complete without our eyes catching few banners promoting a brand s product. Mostly these
advertisements associate certain roles and colors with different genders. For example, in many
advertisements pink color is often linked with girls while blue color is often used in boy s outfit s
promotions. Furthermore, whenever we go toy shopping, we see two sections; one is pink signifying
girl section that is filled with dolls, makeup, and princes puzzles pieces. The other is blue signifying
boys section that has cars, action figures and toys only for boys. Consequently, such actions haves
changed the way our society thinks about gender. Thus, pink is has come to become

The Effect On The Rule Of Law
When the rule of law has been established by societal conventions, it can be changed when the
government coerces the enforcement of unfair rules. When the rule of law is established through the
government, smuggling will often undermine it because the law is not being applied equally to the
smugglers, and they gain an unfair advantage in the market. One can argue that the smugglers are
responding to unfair tariffs that prevent the rule of law because they as importers have to a tax that
domestic producers do not have to pay. If the rule of law has been established so tariffs are small, and
fair, then the argument is flawed. Negative effects on the rule of law caused by the tariff will be
smaller than the negative effect on the rule of law when the law does not apply equally to everyone,
and smugglers bribe official to successfully import their goods so when the rule of law is well
established, smuggling undermines it.
When a country does not have a well established rule of law, then smuggling can help created a strong
De Facto rule of law by encouraging equitable societal conventions. If tariffs are sufficiently high, and
importation or exportation bans are comprehensive, then people stop applying the government s rules
and in turn they create a new set of societal conventions that people adhere too. When this happens,
the rule of law is strengthen because smugglers avoid stifling tariffs, and the rules are applied more
equitably to foreign producers, and domestic

The Visionary Skills By Richard Branson
Richard Branson has proved his monumental visionary skills by persistently projecting his fantasies
for the organisation and collaborating the resources to move in the direction of fulfilment of those
fantasies. He inspires his workers to bring in new ideas and to think of their own thoughts and
arrangements. This is exhibited by his routine practice of listening, reading and reacting to the
suggestions and messages of his employees. Branson has been depicted as a personality who enjoys
the difficulties, risks and challenges in business and the one who derives satisfaction to attain the
apparently inaccessible targets. It is a part of who he is and he shows it through his leadership style. 2.
Team Builder: There is no existence of leadership without its followers and valuing them is the first
step toward their development as well as in cultivating effective transformational leadership. The
successful implementation of unity among team members has made Branson more successful than
ever. He has traveled extra miles and flown to greater heights just to grasp the recipe of fun working
environment for his employees. He believes to have a family like bond within members who cherish
being part of it and strive to create and enhance that unity. He wants to have a team people who work
for him, for virgin, and own it they should not have the concept of just working for the paycheck. As a
team leader, one has to create a balanced and friendly working environment by minimizing the

Impact Of Globalization On Business And Foreign Markets
Globalization is economics that is worldwide and a powerful force. It is tendencies of business and
investing in domestic and foreign markets. The globalization strengthens the interconnections of
various markets. It is social and technological trends that shows policy changes. When looking at
economics worldwide one has to consider the history of trade, the relationship of tariffs, and the
standards in the industries.
International trade indicates a large part of the economic research of production growth. Market size
has grown from exports of a companies products. By exporting a company learns about the foreign
markets. The company may gain some expertise from feedback they obtain from the buyer. This is
called the learning by exporting theory.
The learning by export theory shows a link between the productivity and trade. It shows
improvements that is tied to the trades and resource reallocations. The theory relies on studies and the
cross industry with time variations within trade. This is a link between the countries. It can run mock
trails to find evidence of more productive in certain periods of time. For instance Egyptian
manufacturers of rugs may not have had as much opportunity to export their goods. Yet the production
levels increased as the rugs were later traded on the foreign market (Economic, 2016). Such studies
shows the improvements in productivity may not come from domestic reallocations.
Sometimes globalization can be an exaggeration in

Essay On Pericles Funeral Oration
In 431 BCE, Pericles delivered his Funeral Oration during the midst of the Peloponnesian War in
order to honor those who died for Athens. This eulogy was given in the middle of the war during a
state celebration where the population gathered to commemorate those who defended Athens.
However, Pericles also used his speech as an opportunity to honor the military and to inspire other
citizens to fill the remaining vacancies in the army. Throughout his speech, Pericles emphasizes the
glory of the Athenian democracy in order to honor the fallen soldiers and to inspire his people to
continue to fight for the future of Athens. Pericles begins his speech by reflecting on the history of the

By demonstrating the success of the Athenian military, Pericles discusses why these fallen soldiers are
heroes who will live on in history. He mentions, They gave her their lives, to her and to all of us, and
for their own selves they won praises that never grow old, the most splendid of sepulchers not the
sepulcher in which their bodies are laid, but where their glory remains eternal in men s minds, always
there on the right occasion to stir others to speech or to action (76 77). While the men would be
honored and buried together, their real graves live on in the minds of those living in Athens. Not only
will their loved ones remember them, but future soldiers will use them as inspiration to keep fighting
in the war. Similarly, Pericles calls for the remaining citizens to grieve for their loved ones, but also to
consider making new children that will continue to fight for the Athenian legacy. Pericles explains, In
your own homes these new children will prevent you from brooding over those who are no more, and
they will be a help to the city, too, both in filling the empty places, and in assuring her security (77).
By having new children, these families will no longer be fixated on their dead loved ones. These
children will fill the empty places of society by serving the greatness of Athens, especially males who
will be able to join the military. Overall,

Retail Manager as TrainerBy Malcolm Fleschner, Monster Contributing Writer
Since founding The Friedman Group, a global retail consulting and training organization, in 1980,
Harry Friedman has heard plenty of excuses from retail store executives who refuse to provide much

My Legacy Research Paper
My legacy Everyone leaves a legacy behind of some sort during their life. Whether it is a positive
legacy or a negative legacy is up to that person. I have tried my best to leave behind a positive legacy,
although sometimes it is not easy. I believe a legacy does not need to be about one specific thing
either. My legacy so far is about who I am as a person, and how it has impacted others. The first and
most prominent way I have created a legacy so far is as a friend. I don t have many close friends, but
this doesn t only count with close friends. I believe this part of my legacy involves any way I have
impacted another person, even just acquaintances, or other times complete strangers. I have tried my
best to do this in a positive manner. My close friends would remember me as loyal, someone they can
trust. They would also remember me as fun, adventurous, and easy to talk to. I would remember them
the same way. Acquaintances that I see every day would remember me as friendly and helpful. I think

Dostoevsky as Performer Essay
Dostoevsky as Performer
Storytelling and reading aloud played a valuable part in young Fyodor s life, influencing his own later
successful writing endeavors as well as his performance of literature. His nanny and wet nurse
introduced the Dostoevsky children to folklore and lives of the saints through the stories they told.
Nanny Alyona Frolovna told the children stories of ancient Russia, of Saint Sergey of Moscow
subduing a bear by the power of his holiness, of heroes and legends and folk tales, Christianity and
Russian myth intertwined ; the stories were so vivid and frightening that the children had trouble
sleeping (Gunn 10). During the winter their former wet nurses would make a ceremonial visit to the

The Gothic novels of Ann Radcliffe were favorites of the Dostoevskys. Frank contends that
Dostoevsky, influenced by Radcliffe, would later incorporate Gothic techniques of plot, character, and
atmosphere and carry them to a peak of perfection that has never been surpassed (1976, 55). Among
the literature read and discussed by the Dostoevsky fireside were the Bible, writings of Nikolai
Karamzin, including History of the Russian State, Letters of a Russian Traveller, and Poor Liza; the
poets Vasily Zhukovsky, Mikhail Y. Lermontov, Gavriil R. Derzhavin, and, of course, Alexander
Pushkin; and the novelist Sir Walter Scott. Frank believes that the readings in the family circle were
designed to stimulate and benefit the children and to turn them into Godfearing and loyal citizens of
the Tsar (1976, 5960). Geir Kjetsaa reports that the Dostoevsky parents were fine readers and the two
oldest boys [Mikhail and Fyodor] did not lag far behind them and is convinced that for Fyodor these
reading sessions served as a literary foundation for his entire life (10).
The influence of Fyodor s mother, his first teacher, was no doubt strong as she conveyed her love of
poetry and novels as well as music. Fyodor began to read for himself at the age of four from an
antique volume containing a hundred and four Bible tales and conceived a passion for the book of Job

U-Boat Tactics in World War II
In September of 2012, Germany s last surviving U Boat captain who helped sink dozens of U.S. and
British ships has been honoured by the modern military in his homeland seven decades after he was
twice decorated by Hitler for bravery. It may seem grim to honor a person who referred to American
shooting season as his hobby during the war, but it is important to recognize the contributions of U
Boat commanders like Reinhard Hardegen. German submarines had been an engineering vision since
1465, and preliminary German submarines were being manufactured as early as 1850 with Sebastian
Wilhelm Valentin Bauer s Brandtaucher design. The Brandtaucher was much improved upon during
the Industrial Age, which represented the peak of Kaiserdom in Germany. With its financial coffers
relatively full, the Kaiser was able to fund designs such as those by Vogel in 1870 and Howaldt in
1891. However, Gustav Zede designed the Forelle (named after the much beloved German trout fish)
and it was the first truly successful German submarine and was launched in 1903. From these early
submarines evolved one of the world s most evocative killing machines, the U Boats. Leading up to
the development of the U Boat were a series of military escalations, culminating in the start of the
Great War. Throughout modern German history, military technologies like the U Boat have been
integral to strategic planning. Even when decisions regarding U Boat development and deployment

Universal Design For Learning
In the Westglen School, K 6: Universal Design for Learning video, we see boys and girls of several
different age groups that range from kindergarten to sixth grade. The classrooms seem diverse
ethnically and culturally. We are shown that the universal design for learning means each child is
included no matter what their learning style is or if they have a disability. Learning styles applies to
Gardner s theory of multiple intelligences which dismisses the idea of general intelligences and
defines intelligence in terms of distinct sets of processing operations that permit individuals to engage
in a wide range of culturally valued activities (Berk and Meyers, 2016, p. 449). In this video, the
professionals identify learning barriers or missed opportunities associated with each child and apply

Driverless Car Ethical Dilemmas
Autonomous vehicles are on the verge of drastically changing transportation. They potentially can
save millions of dollars in damages and fuel efficiency as well as countless lives. However, the
development of driverless cars pose serious ethical problems for software engineers. For instance, the
millions of people who earn their living driving trucks or cabs would lose their jobs as they get
replaced by computer programs. Another issue is transparency because the driving software needs to
be very high quality to increase safety. Company designers and researchers tend to work secretly, so
others can t steal their progress but this close mindedness closes off extra ideas and criticism. Finally,
the need for safe code delves into morality. An autonomous car will have to make life and death ...

Companies work very hard to keep their code from the public to protect their ideas but this also
protects any accidental or faulty code from the public. For example, Volkswagen designed its vehicles
to produce lower emissions when being tested, but during regular driving, vehicles produced more
emissions. This was discovered when people measured the emissions from the tail pipe without
hooking it up to a computer. This kind of conspiracy would never have worked if companies had to
disclose their data. Another benefit could be greater detection of bugs. The runaway cars of Toyota

The Importance Of Ethical Codes In Counselling
Second argument, let s look back at the ethical codes, section A.6.B ( Extending Counseling
Boundaries) states that Counselors consider the risks and benefits of extending current counseling
relationships beyond conventional parameters. In extending these boundaries, counselors take
appropriate professional precautions such as informed consent, consultation, supervision, and
documentation to ensure that judgment is not impaired and no harm occurs. (ACA, 2014). As this code
states, if a therapist takes appropriate steps by documenting everything and discussing events in
supervision, which we are doing now, we should be safe within the ethical code lines. The Most
important point to remember, as long as the client is not hurt during the dual relationship process, we
are maintaining our promise of being ethically professional helpers.
The third argument is that these codes that we abide by in both counseling and art therapy are not the
law. They are merely attempted guidelines for therapists to remind them to not mentally or physically
harm their clients. Most of the codes are vague and contradict themselves, for instance for section 1.4
of the American Art therapy Association codes states that Art therapists refrain from entering into
multiple relationships with clients if the multiple relationships could reasonably be expected to impair
competence or effectiveness of the art therapist to perform his or her functions as an art therapist, or
otherwise risks exploitation or

Outline Of A Speech On History And Education
INFORMATIVE SPEECH OUTLINE
Luis Gomez Informative Outline
Topic: History of Segregation in Education General Purpose: To Inform
Specific Purpose: To inform my audience about one of the most notorious eras in politics and
education.
Thesis: Brown V. The Board of Education of Topeka and its reversal of the decision of Plessy V.
Ferguson and the Separate but Equal clause is one of the most monumental, and impactful decision
ever made.
I. Introduction
A. Attention Getter:
B. Thurgood Marshall was responsible for rearguing the Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka case
and took part in taking this case all the way up to the Supreme Court of the United States. He was a
victim of racial segregation when he was applying for law ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
African Americans were systematically denied the right to vote
e. Some cities had placed 10:00 PM curfews on blacks.
f. The U.S. Supreme Court Justices declared that the fourteenth amendment never specified what
specific rights color race would gain.
Transition: Now that I ve discussed the Plessy v. Ferguson case and its effects, I will now discuss the
Brown v. The Board of Education of Topeka case which would help reverse the effect of the separate
but equal doctrine established in Plessy.
B. The NAACP legal team chipped away at the Separate but Equal Doctrine established in Plessy v.
Ferguson.
1. The NAACP Legal Defense was headed by Thurgood Marshall.
a. The main question that Marshall and his team presented was b. Did the segregation of public
education based solely on race violate the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment? The
Supreme Court held that separate but equal facilities are inherently unequal and violate the protections
of the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. The Court also held that the segregation
of public education based on race instilled a sense of inferiority that had a hugely detrimental effect on
the education and personal growth of African American children.
Transition: I will discuss the aftermath and conditions of society during the beginning of this Civil
Rights era.
2. Despite such dramatic courtroom and congressional victories, the

Vita Nova Trinity Number 19 Analysis
The Vita Nova has many symbolic themes throughout its structure such as the words vita and nova
themselves. In both Italian and English, vita refers to life and nova in Italian refers to marvelous or
strange, however in English, it refers to brightness (of light). Another symbol in the poem is the
Trinity number nine as Dante refers to it every time he has an encounter with Beatrice. In this essay,
because Vita Nova has 42 chapters, I will discuss how Beatrice represents (and/or mirrors) light
throughout chapters 2 8 (with the definition of Trinity mentioned in chapter 29), through Dante s
actual sight and uncontrollable dreams. Dante s muse represents light in chapter two because she can
see all throughout his body as, during his first ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Trinity number nine is also found in this chapter, as it was precisely the ninth hour of that day,
three o clock in the afternoon (III, 2). Although this is the chapter when Beatrice finally gives Dante
her salutation, the chapter s focus is in his dream. In the dream, Dante sees a powerful figure holding
his muse in one hand and forcing her to eat a burning object in another (III, 6). As the human like
figure came out from a cloud the color of fire (III, 3), it said, ego dominus tuus...vide cor tuum (III, 3;
5) to Dante, the pilgrim, which translates into, I m your lord...look into your heart. In other words, the
figure represents light itself (as God) since he claimed to be the lord and because he came from a
cloud the color of fire (III, 3). Beatrice represents light because the figure forcibly fed her the burning
object, Dante s heart, thus, giving her the ability to see through Dante s most secret chamber as
mentioned in chapter two. Although one can argue that since this human like figure uses force against
Beatrice and comes in the form of a fiery cloud, this figure can be mistaken as a Demon; however,
because both the figure and Beatrice ascent toward the heavens (III, 7), it supports my argument that
the figure is actually light

An Adventure of the Quantum Universe in Alice in...
The novel, Alice and Quantum Land, by Robert Gilmore is an adventure in the Quantum universe.
Alice, a normal teenage girl, goes through quantum land and understands what quantum is and how it
works. The quantum world is a difficult one to understand, as its nature is one of complex states of
being, natures, principles, notions, and the like. When these principles or concepts are compared with
the macro world, one can find great similarities and even greater dissimilarities between the world
wherein electrons rule, and the world wherein human beings live. In Alice in Quantumland, author
Robert Gilmore converts the original tale of Alice in Wonderland from a world of anthropomorphic
creatures into the minute world of quantum mechanics, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

All in all, this idea is one of the more significant ideas in the book.
Moreover, the principle of superposition states that if the world can be in any configuration, any
possible arrangement of particles or fields, and if the world could also be in another configuration,
then the world can also be in a state which is a superposition of the two, where the amount of each
configuration that is in the superposition is specified by a complex number. Superposition is a
principle of quantum theory that describes a challenging concept about the nature and behavior of
matter and forces at the sub atomic level. The principle of superposition claims that while we do not
know what the state of any object is, it is actually in all possible states simultaneously, as long as we
don t look to check. It is the measurement itself that causes the object to be limited to a single
possibility. In the novel, the mechanic mentions to Alice the Schrodinger experiment. This experiment
was analogous to superposition in the macro world. Schrodinger s experiment was to put a cat, flask of
poisonous glass, and a mechanism to break the flask should substance decay in a closed box.
Mechanic then stated that the substance may or may not decay, therefore, according to the rules of
quantum physics you would have a superposition of states, in some of which the decay would have
happened and in others it would not. Of course,

A Streetcar Named Desire Film Analysis
In the film A Streetcar Named Desire , the producers do an excellent job of showing how the film
plays with light and dark, illusion and reality, and brutality conflict. Blanche, Stella, Stanly and Mitch
successfully portray the concepts of light vs dark, illusion vs reality, brutality conflict through various
transitions of each. As Blanche arrives at the house of Stella and Stanly, right away you see his mood
go into a very dark place as if he does not want her to be there. Stanly s character in the film comes off
to be very rough and aggressive. The night after Blanche arrived, she meets Stanly s friend Mitch,
who is different from Stanly just by the way he carries himself. Mitch and Blanche catch a glimpse of
each other which brings some light back into her being there. Stella was in support of her sister
blanche meeting Mitch as it may have been an effective way for her to comfortably. Light and dark
effects in a dramatic film play a big part because it sets the tone of the storyline and helps give the
suspension of where the story will go and end up. It can be good for a film to bounce back and forth
from light and dark moments to keep scenes impactful to the viewer. [For example, in the scene where
Blanche buys a cover for the light in the bedroom area, it made her happy, and the others seemed as if
they supported it to make her feel comfortable, and then towards the end of the film when Stanly
snatches the cover off the light as he is angry, it changes the

The Walmart Effect And The Big Thirst By Charles Fisher
Earth is filled with vast amounts of water, yet it s like a cruel joke to people who cannot drink it due to
its toxicity to us. Likewise, fresh water is our most precious resource that people depend on every day.
Our society is based around the use of large amounts of water in our everyday lives. Charles Fisher, a
three time winner of the Gerald Loeb award, a writer for the magazine Fast Company, and the author
of The Walmart Effect and The Big Thirst, tells a different story. In the article Will the World Run out
of Fresh Water, which explains that people take water for granted and never see its true value like
people in the past, published at the Detroit Greenhaven Press in 2012. Because we use vast amounts of
water and never see the process in which water is given to people, Fisherman proposes this idea that
water is taken for granted until we run out, which is more than true. Each day, our homes receive
gallons upon gallons of water for our living necessities to live a comfortable life. In the article Fisher
explains that at least in the developed world, we have gradually been able to stop thinking about water
. This is due to being around water all our lives. We have been conditioned from day one to believe
fresh water will never run out. Even our emotional connections to water have become submerged and
camouflaged , for example when a person in America sees someone spilling a cup of water on the
ground they do not even care to tell them they are being wasteful, which

telescope. Galileo s life consisted of many important events; there were two main people who helped
him do what he did; he made many important inventions and discoveries; and his discoveries are the

Peer Leadership Final: Section Two
1. The Retreat This was one of the best experiences that I had all year. I loved just about every part of
it. Going into the retreat, I was nervous. I worried about the school that I was missing, if I had packed
enough, if I was going to like the food, if I was going to feel a part of the group, etc. But I faced it
head on and had an absolutely incredible experience. Firstly, I really enjoyed not having phones. It
was weird for me to not be able to reach into my pocket to check the time or to check up on what was
happening back in Burlington. It allowed to to really cherish the moment and focus on spending my
time with the nineteen other people that I was with. Each activity that we did on the retreat was a ton
of fun and equally valuable for me, but I will highlight just my favorites. One of the things that I loved
most from the retreat was the one on one talks. I am someone who doesn t tend to be great at sitting
down with someone and really getting to know them and having deep conversation with them. When I
did so, I loved it more than words could speak. I am a rather intellectual and thoughtful person, but I
don t tend to share those thoughts. I talked with Lindsey, Cal, Nylah, and Jon Michael. Those
conversations were and still are so special to me. I wish that we had continued to have those randomly

The Globalization Of Globalization
Based on Sparke s textbook, Globalization can be defined as the extension, acceleration, and
intensification of consequential worldwide global interconnections. This is what he refers to as little g
globalization. These global interconnections reveal the ties and tensions of globalization. There is also
big G globalization which is what Sparke calls using globalization as a buzzword in a political
context. A big part of globalization is commodities and commodity chains. A commodity can be
simply defined as anything that is bought or sold while a commodity chain is the production process
that produces these commodities. Understanding commodities and commodity chains is important to
be able to understand globalization. One example of how commodities demonstrate globalization is
outsourcing and offshoring. By doing this, companies bring their companies overseas which means
that they are interconnected with other parts of the world. Understanding commodity chains can also
allow you to understand the ties and tensions. I decided to focus on the apparel industry and the
commodity of a piece of clothing. This commodity shows some of the tensions related to labor, like
constantly searching for the cheapest labor, and tensions related to the environment, like pollution
from the clothing industry. A piece of clothing also shows ties through, for instance, in which
countries clothes are produced and to which countries they are being exported to. The article Indian

Leadership Roles And Lead Teams During My Internship With...
This past summer, I was able to take leadership roles and lead teams during my internship with

my leadership skills unfold. One big critique of my leadership is that I can be mean. It was times when
my teammates weren t working hard enough or not moving where I wanted to be that I didn t know
how to communicate these problems in an efficient manner in order to get my point across. This
caused tension and bad chemistry in our group. In retrospect, I see that I was moving too fast and not
pausing to observe what was happening around me. I wasn t a critic of myself and I didn t take time to
assess my group or new ideas that they brought forward. I now see that when getting to an end point in
a project, one must always assess the environment and direction that the group is heading pivoting and
retracting when it s called for and efficiently communicating with teammates. One aspect of my
leadership that I think is a strength is being able to get rolling on a project. Facilitating ideas and
coming together to map out the direction of a project is something I excel at. I can assign roles that fit
people s skills and give them instruction on where they need to go. While I mentioned that, I need to
evaluate situations closer, I have the ability to move a team forward. During the summer, I was always
able to organize the team and get us started on our projects.

Qualitative Design Paper

The vital methodological approach for this study is on qualitative intrinsic case study research. It is
imperative to note that even though all parts of the research design are connected, the connections are
not inflexible. The rubber band analogy, as put forward by Maxwell, tries to expound vividly a
qualitative design as something that is considerably flexible but there are constraints caused by
different parts one onto another. If these constrains are in anyway compromised, they may result in the
design being ineffective (Maxwell, 2005, p.6).
The qualitative research serves to comprehend and explain on what a participant means (Morrow,
2005). In a more elaborate manner, Creswell (1998) defines qualitative research to be an analytical ...

There are four major reasons for using interviewing as the primary data source for this study. First is
that in order to study people?s perception of the meaning in their lived world, it would be appropriate
to use qualitative (Kvale, 1996, p. 105). Secondly, interviewing plays a critical role in finding out what
is going on another individual?s mind. Patton goes on to explain that interviewing someone aids in
finding out words from their mouths that cannot be (Patton, 2002). Thirdly, Merriam (2002)
acknowledges that qualitative interviews culminate in thick descriptions of the subject matter, which
enables readers to make decisions about transferability of study results. Conclusively, credibility of the
findings is increased as a result of the triangulation of information obtained from other (Merriam,

whose insights can be of great importance in helping an observer to comprehend on how and why

Peter Drucker 1
Peter F. Drucker developed the Management by Objectives Theory . This theory presents an objective
that needs to be accomplished. A manager will receive an objective and break it down into achievable
goals. The Manager will then delegate employees on what tasks should be done. Once all tasks are
complete the project will fit together like pieces of a puzzle. This style of management is good for the
employee in the fact that they are told what to do, but get to be creative and accomplish the task in
their own manner.

The Management by Objective s is very versatile and can be used for many different purposes. It can
be used when you want employees to develop self leadership and management skills. This will also
help employees be creative; and be able to draw back into past experience and pick up on patterns and
apply them to present tasks (Kotelnikov, 2001, ¶ 5).
Setting Objectives In Management by Objectives theory the hardest part can be the first step of the
process, setting the objectives. When starting this management style there are two questions that you
can ask to get yourself started. These questions are; what are the objectives and what are the time
frames in which goals should be met (Kotelnikov, 2001, p. 2)? When setting up the objectives for you
first time the S.M.A.R.T. method is a good resource to use. This method acts as a guideline to set up
objectives and to keep you on the right track. The S.M.A.R.T. method stands for: Specific,
Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time based (Bogue, 2009, ¶ 12).
When setting up objectives there are many variables that come into effect. First off objectives should
be specific; this is done by describing what you are trying to achieve. For example, stating that
productivity needs to increase is very broad; and should be stated more along the lines of increase
productivity by ten percent . This way the objective

Long Day s Journey into Night is one of the greatest dramas written by Eugene O Neil, somewhere

expressionism and realism. Moreover, this particular drama involves psychological intrigues within a
seemingly dysfunctional family. Namely, the Tyrones dysfunctionality is presented by single day
ongoing in which the readers/audience can find out the causes of the family s discord.

Symbolism In Strange Fruit, By Abel Meeropol
The poem Strange Fruit by Abel Meeropol, could be described as dark and graphic, as it embodies
Southern violence in America. The poem describes the lynching of black slaves, which was generally
presented to an audience of whites. Billie Holiday, a black female artist, would sing the poem to a
predominantly upper class white club. But strangely, the poem was written by a white man, Abel
Meeropol. Although the last confirmed lynching was in 1968, there are other forms of racially
motivated killings and violence in the United States today such as police brutality and the race riots
formed by white supremacist in Charlottesville. White America is linked and always will be to the
history of black killings. To understand what some of the lynching s could have looked like, Meeropol
made the poem very vivid with many examples of imagery within it as well as the many dark
metaphors he placed throughout the poem.
To understand why Strange Fruit transpired in the first place, it is important to realize the terrible acts
committed during the 1930s. The first slave ship sailed across the Atlantic Ocean in 1619 and from
then on, slavery would be etched into the history of America. For 246 years, slaves worked in
numerous fields of crops while being sold, traded, raped, and killed. Even after the abolishment of
slavery, Jim Crow laws started taking affect soon after around the 1880s. Although Jim Crow laws
were separate but equal rights, it was as if they were unfair and unjust rights.

Ethnic Differences Between Nationality And Ethnicity
Rise of Nationalities
A group of people tied to a place is a nationality. Ethnicity is similar to nationality. The American
nationality includes any citizen, born or immigrated and became a citizen, of the United States.
Immigrants consider ethnicity more important than nationality. Violate conflicts can be a result of
confusion between nationality and ethnicity.
Nation States
Ethnic groups have become nationalities because the want for self rule is a common attitude for many
of them. Ethnicities want to govern themselves without interference. This is called self discrimination.
Political leaders supported self discrimination in order to put Earth s surface into nation states. A
nation state is a state that is occupied by an ethnicity and can be turned into a nationality. self
discrimination Ethnicities want to govern themselves without interference. nation state A state that is
occupied by an ethnicity and can be turned into a nationality.
Nation states in Europe
In Europe in the 19th century, ethnicities were changed to nationalities. The French ethnic traditions
fused with the Roman Catholic Church to form the French nationality. By 1900, most of Western
Europe was made up of nation states. They competed to control territory in Africa and Asia and
disagreed over boundaries. Eastern Europe did not have nation states. It had a mix of empires and
states that did not correlate to ethnicity. Nazis claimed that all german speaking parts of Europe should

Marketing Strategy Of Apple Inc
Steven Wozniak and Steven Jobs founded Apple Inc. in 1976 (pg.248). The company launched by
manufacturing computers. Due to the competitive market of PCs Apple Inc. then used other strategies
to benefit the company s profit. Apple Inc. manufactured a variety of products such as Notebook
computers, the PowerBooks, iPods and iPhones to name a few. With these products, Apple
revolutionized the PC market. Although the success of the company was solely on the production of
iPods and iPhones, the company was stationary as a PC manufacturer. Strategies used by Apple Inc. In
order to develop a competitive advantage with rival PC manufacturers such as Dell, Microsoft,
Toshiba, Acer, etc. Apple Inc. used a broad differentiation strategy. This ... Show more content on

The divergent types of iPods offered different features and memory size. The innovative technology
had several mishaps, the company continued to create technology to fix errors and satisfy customer
needs or complaints. Although Apple Inc. was faced with errors, they continued to profit seventy
percent of the Market Place. S.W.O.T Analysis Strengths Steve Jobs developed Apple Inc. through his
vision; he wanted Apple Inc. to stay ahead of the technology industry by developing new and
innovative technology that no other PC manufacture had to offer the Market Place. When the company
began offering smartphones and personal media players, this became a major strength for the company
as it continued to grow. When looking at the root of the company as a personal computer industry, the
development of the different types of PCs was a strength for the company as well, because it divided
society into three groups and developed PCs that would benefit those pacific groups of individuals. An
example of this would be the Mac Pro, the iMac, and the Mac mini. The Mac Pro aimed at
professional and business users, the iMac targeted educational and business use, and the Mac mini was
for consumer use (pg. 253). Weaknesses Although Apple Inc. has a variety of innovative products, the
price of the products is a major weakness compared to other companies. Other rival companies
develop products that began at low end to high end products compared to Apple Inc. Opportunities A

Smart phones allow us to not only talk and text on the phone, but also various other duties that a
computer would such as check emails, send documents, browse the Internet, and find locations. With
the allure of smart phones comes the catch of now transmitting personal and confidential information
into our phones, allowing unwanted users or hackers to view our data without our consent. In addition,
there was a time when the typewriter was the only machine used for data entry, but in present day, we
have laptops, desktop computers, and also netbooks. With these fancy gadgets, Web 2.0 had also been
created. In our text, we read that Web 1.0 was the ability to perform read only but with the creation of
Web 2.0, we are able to read and write (Bowles, 2010). This notion is shown on our social networks as
we post statuses of how we feel or where we are going, or what we are doing. Little do we know, that
with every pro comes a con. By inputting our information on such sites as Facebook, Twitter, or
Blogger, we subject ourselves to a lifetime of invasion of privacy. No matter how many letters or
words we type, edit or delete on these sites, they are stamped in the World Wide Web indefinitely.
Lastly, with the allure of virtual reality and being able to plug in and experience what it s like to be
someone else (Kurzweil, 2005), we set ourselves up for yet another

The English Peasant Uprising Essay
The English Peasant Uprising was motivated by a growing contempt with the government and clergy
following the Black Death which was finally set off by a series of immediate social and economic
causes. A shortage of workers followed the Black Death with an estimated forty five per cent of the
population dying in England . As entire towns were either deserted or left devoid of life, rural peasants
increased their mobility into major cities. This shortage of rural workers led to famine as fields were
left to go fallow, placing further economic pressure on the peasant classes who survived as the price of
food increased. Due to the lack of labourers, the labourers who survived demanded greater wages as
they now had increased leverage over ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Schools of thought such as held by the Lollards, followers of theologian and reformer John Wycliffe
whom acted as lay preachers, were held responsible for the Uprising as they were critical of the
church as an institution, particularly the concept of the Church owning land. As these Lollards
travelled and preached their opposition to the Church as temporal power, they resonated with the
peasants and became increasingly popular as unlike many of the priests and monks recruited after the
Black Death, they were observed to be genuinely pious . The already solid dissatisfaction with the
clergy only intensified with the imprisonment of a highly popular Lollard, John Ball. John Ball was
imprisoned at Maidstone in Kent when he came into conflict with Simon of Sudbury Archbishop of
Canterbury for lay preaching. The Hundred Years war with France is still ongoing at this point which
was also adding further pressure to the lower classes due to the taxes needed to fund it. The war was
very expensive, which meant more taxes had to be put in place to compensate for the lack of people
paying taxes on account of forty five per cent of tax payers being dead. Not only were wages fixed by
parliament, but parliament demanded more money from a populace already financially struggling
under fixed wages and inflated food prices. The stresses of the Hundred Years War only intensified
with the death of Edward III in 1377

Major League Baseball In The 1800 s
The great sport of baseball took a long time to develop into the game it is today. Major League
Baseball wasn t always a bunch of sunflower spitting guys hitting four homeruns a game, in fact, in
the early stages, very few were hit. Major League Baseball has grown tremendously since the 1800 s
and it is still growing. Baseball was created in 1845 by Alexander Cartwright, however the first
official game wasn t played until 1846. In 1858, the National Association of Baseball Players was
created, which was the first official baseball league. Then, as baseball was picking up, the Civil War
caused it to slow down. This was until the Union soldiers spread the sport across the country
(Lahman). By the end of the war, baseball was as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

the MLB since they entered it in 1901. According to Statista.com, The Yankees, which play in the
American League East, were established in 1901 under the name the Orioles in Baltimore and were

The Blue Ridge Mountains Of North Carolina
Vincent Carter 10/4/15 GLY 3311c Homework 2 The Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina is a
diverse geological area to study tectonic setting, metamorphic and igneous rocks, and how the tectonic
history has affected the development of the minerals in the area. The Blue Ridge Mountains sit within
a larger tectonic area that includes part of the smoky mountains and Appalachian mountain chain. The
Blue Ridge Mountains sit upon a large thrust plate area that has experienced repeated movement in the
orogeny process as the Appalachians were built. This process occurred during the Proterozoic to the
Paleozoic period (Tectonic Setting of the Southern Appalachians). Evidence of the faulting includes
sedimentary zones at the end of the thrust. Within the thrust areas is high grade metamorphic rocks
and some igneous rocks from intrusion during collision events (Hatcher, R). Evidence of the intrusions
are the dikes which can be seen and the large granite facies throughout the area (Grant, Willard). The
age of the thrusts and the areas where they occurred are dated to varying ages with the oldest tectonic
action dated 595 million years ago to the youngest at 265 million years ago (Hatcher, R). The thrust
faults in the center of the Blue Ridge area would appear to have the highest grade of metamorphism
while the faults to the edge have the lowest grade metamorphism or sedimentary features (Hatcher,
Robert, and Arthur Merschat.). this is easily seen because the area where the

Globalization and Lower Living Standards for Americans...
Kofi Annan, a UN diplomat, once said, ...that arguing against globalization is like arguing against the
laws of gravity. He is undoubtedly correct in this assessment. Indeed, globalization is no longer
something to be skeptical of, it is very real and is changing our world exponentially. The affects of
globalization, however, continue to be a heated topic for debate. Proponents praise the overall
economic lift provided by free trade, the diffusion of cultures, and the spread of democracy and
capitalism. Critics cry foul at the loss of national identity, the accelerated and uncontrolled use of
natural resources, and the redistribution of wealth into the hands of a few very powerful people and
corporations. Globalization is a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If it had not been for the increasing awareness of other cultures brought about by globalization Yoga
would never have grown to the fad it is today. This prevalence of global fads can be seen in many
ways, especially in entertainment and technology. When I was younger I regularly read Japanese
manga comics. These comics, long popular in Japan, only recently became popular in America due to
the proliferation of American fan translations on the internet. Through manga I learned a lot of
Japanese culture and found hours of entertainment that I would not have experienced otherwise. As
with the entertainment of Japanese comics, I also play several video games designed in Japan and
regularly use technology such as the Sony Playstation. In fact, the computer I type on is of Korean
origin. Without globalization these parts of my life would be quite different. The prevalence of
technology and ideas can only have a positive impact on the world and my life. The more minds in the
world that can cooperatively work to improve our lives the better. My life has definitely been
impacted by this aspect of globalization and I am grateful for it. How many hours of enjoyment have I
gotten from international entertainment, how much easier does my computer make my life? These
things are not immediately quantifiable, but I can be sure that I would rather have these experiences
and technologies than to have missed out on them. In addition to the affects of globalization on my life

Resurfice Vs Hanke Case Study
When reviewing the facts of the case Resurfice v. Hanke, it may appear as though it was a clear win
for Resurfice inc, however I believe that the Supreme Court of Canada made some key errors in
making their decision, ultimately leading the judges to make the wrong decision. Firstly the Supreme
court did not place a strong enough emphasis on the design flaws of the Zamboni. As brought forth in
court, both the Gasoline tank and the water tank were placed directly beside one another, they were
also the same colour. Had the defects of the zamboni not made it so easy to mix the two tanks up, the
explosion likely would never had happened. In addition to this Resurfice corp did not do their due
diligence to make the Zamboni easier to use. According

Holmes and The Murder Castle Dr. H. H. Holmes is one of the two main figures in The Devil in the White City . Born Herman Webster Mudgett in 1861, Holmes was a shady character from the beginning. While studying medicine and surgery at the University of Michigan, he stole bodies from the university s laboratory, mutilated them, and reported their deaths as accidents so he could collect on the insurance policies he had taken out on the dead. Around the time that he arrived in Chicago, Holmes began using his famous __alias__, or false name, Dr. H. H. Holmes. Upon arriving in Chicago in 1886, Holmes set himself up in business as a pharmacist. In 1893, sensing a once in a lifetime business opportunity, he opened a hotel, which he called the World s Fair Hotel. The building would become notorious as Holmes s Murder Castle. Holmes s hotel was an impenetrable maze of more than 100 windowless rooms, dead end hallways, and doors opening to nowhere. To ensure that he alone understood the overall plan of the building, Holmes constantly hired and fired building crews, keeping anyone from working on the Murder Castle for too long. Holmes murdered dozens perhaps hundreds of people who stayed in his hotel while they were in Chicago to attend the World s Fair. • 3. Causes Of The Decline Of Labor Unions Introduction Labor unions became very prevalent during the Progressive Era when positions in factories were readily available but also steadily dangerous. Unions were drafted in order to protect the rights of workers regarding safety, wages, and benefits. It wasn t until about the 1980 s when labor unions started to face a real decline and lack of memberships. In my opinion I believe the lack of manufacturing jobs in the US, newly implemented public policies, and increased lobbying from corporations are the root causes of the decline. Loss of US Manufacturing I believe a contributing factor as to why labor unions are on a steep decline in the US today is because the country s manufacturing sector has become obsolete. Specifically speaking ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Corporations sought to completely disband unions or at least severely weaken. According to Collins, 2015 it worked very well and in the last 30 years they have been very successful at either blocking or weakening any legislation that would help unions or collective bargaining (p. 2). As unions became weaker corporations acted by refusing to meet any of their requests regarding higher wages or benefits. They even went as far to hire strike breakers. Once a job lock out began or a strike ensued strike breakers were hired to replace union workers (Collins, 2015). After the strike subsided this left many people without work. The hiring of strike breakers gained popularity and effectiveness so much that unions became reluctant to continue their striking. For comparison purposes 371 strikes took place in 1970 and only 11 occurred in 2010 (Collins, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Influence Of Advertising On Contemporary Society Youmna Shafiq English 101A 25 December 13, 2014 The Influence of advertisement on contemporary society Shafiq 1 In our media rich society, we see advertisements every day. Their appearance happens at numerous places ranging from cereal boxes to television screens, as well as public buses. Most advertisement often conveys an unrealistic view of the product. While it is a mass marketing technique to make the consumer buy the product, but most of us believe whatever advertised is true without giving a second thought to it. In our contemporary society, it has become very hard to escape the influence of such advertisements. These advertisements affect us in shopping malls, while watching televisions as well as in food places. Advertising has enormous impact on us in shopping malls. Almost no trip to the mall has ever been complete without our eyes catching few banners promoting a brand s product. Mostly these advertisements associate certain roles and colors with different genders. For example, in many advertisements pink color is often linked with girls while blue color is often used in boy s outfit s promotions. Furthermore, whenever we go toy shopping, we see two sections; one is pink signifying girl section that is filled with dolls, makeup, and princes puzzles pieces. The other is blue signifying boys section that has cars, action figures and toys only for boys. Consequently, such actions haves changed the way our society thinks about gender. • 6. The Effect On The Rule Of Law When the rule of law has been established by societal conventions, it can be changed when the government coerces the enforcement of unfair rules. When the rule of law is established through the government, smuggling will often undermine it because the law is not being applied equally to the smugglers, and they gain an unfair advantage in the market. One can argue that the smugglers are responding to unfair tariffs that prevent the rule of law because they as importers have to a tax that domestic producers do not have to pay. If the rule of law has been established so tariffs are small, and fair, then the argument is flawed. Negative effects on the rule of law caused by the tariff will be smaller than the negative effect on the rule of law when the law does not apply equally to everyone, and smugglers bribe official to successfully import their goods so when the rule of law is well established, smuggling undermines it. When a country does not have a well established rule of law, then smuggling can help created a strong De Facto rule of law by encouraging equitable societal conventions. If tariffs are sufficiently high, and importation or exportation bans are comprehensive, then people stop applying the government s rules and in turn they create a new set of societal conventions that people adhere too. When this happens, the rule of law is strengthen because smugglers avoid stifling tariffs, and the rules are applied more equitably to foreign producers, and domestic ... It is tendencies of business and investing in domestic and foreign markets. The globalization strengthens the interconnections of various markets. It is social and technological trends that shows policy changes. When looking at economics worldwide one has to consider the history of trade, the relationship of tariffs, and the standards in the industries. International trade indicates a large part of the economic research of production growth. Market size has grown from exports of a companies products. By exporting a company learns about the foreign markets. The company may gain some expertise from feedback they obtain from the buyer. This is called the learning by exporting theory. The learning by export theory shows a link between the productivity and trade. It shows improvements that is tied to the trades and resource reallocations. The theory relies on studies and the cross industry with time variations within trade. This is a link between the countries. It can run mock trails to find evidence of more productive in certain periods of time. For instance Egyptian manufacturers of rugs may not have had as much opportunity to export their goods. Yet the production levels increased as the rugs were later traded on the foreign market (Economic, 2016). Such studies shows the improvements in productivity may not come from domestic reallocations. However, Pericles also used his speech as an opportunity to honor the military and to inspire other citizens to fill the remaining vacancies in the army. He mentions, They gave her their lives, to her and to all of us, and for their own selves they won praises that never grow old, the most splendid of sepulchers not the sepulcher in which their bodies are laid, but where their glory remains eternal in men s minds, always there on the right occasion to stir others to speech or to action (76 77). While the men would be honored and buried together, their real graves live on in the minds of those living in Athens. Not only will their loved ones remember them, but future soldiers will use them as inspiration to keep fighting in the war. Similarly, Pericles calls for the remaining citizens to grieve for their loved ones, but also to consider making new children that will continue to fight for the Athenian legacy. Pericles explains, In your own homes these new children will prevent you from brooding over those who are no more, and they will be a help to the city, too, both in filling the empty places, and in assuring her security (77). By having new children, these families will no longer be fixated on their dead loved ones. These children will fill the empty places of society by serving the greatness of Athens, especially males who will be able to join the military. Overall, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Nanny Alyona Frolovna told the children stories of ancient Russia, of Saint Sergey of Moscow subduing a bear by the power of his holiness, of heroes and legends and folk tales, Christianity and Russian myth intertwined ; the stories were so vivid and frightening that the children had trouble sleeping (Gunn 10). The Gothic novels of Ann Radcliffe were favorites of the Dostoevskys. Frank contends that Dostoevsky, influenced by Radcliffe, would later incorporate Gothic techniques of plot, character, and atmosphere and carry them to a peak of perfection that has never been surpassed (1976, 55). Among the literature read and discussed by the Dostoevsky fireside were the Bible, writings of Nikolai Karamzin, including History of the Russian State, Letters of a Russian Traveller, and Poor Liza; the poets Vasily Zhukovsky, Mikhail Y. Lermontov, Gavriil R. Derzhavin, and, of course, Alexander Pushkin; and the novelist Sir Walter Scott. Frank believes that the readings in the family circle were designed to stimulate and benefit the children and to turn them into Godfearing and loyal citizens of the Tsar (1976, 5960). Geir Kjetsaa reports that the Dostoevsky parents were fine readers and the two oldest boys [Mikhail and Fyodor] did not lag far behind them and is convinced that for Fyodor these reading sessions served as a literary foundation for his entire life (10). The influence of Fyodor s mother, his first teacher, was no doubt strong as she conveyed her love of poetry and novels as well as music. U-Boat Tactics in World War II In September of 2012, Germany s last surviving U Boat captain who helped sink dozens of U.S. and British ships has been honoured by the modern military in his homeland seven decades after he was twice decorated by Hitler for bravery. It may seem grim to honor a person who referred to American shooting season as his hobby during the war, but it is important to recognize the contributions of U Boat commanders like Reinhard Hardegen. German submarines had been an engineering vision since 1465, and preliminary German submarines were being manufactured as early as 1850 with Sebastian Wilhelm Valentin Bauer s Brandtaucher design. The Brandtaucher was much improved upon during the Industrial Age, which represented the peak of Kaiserdom in Germany. With its financial coffers relatively full, the Kaiser was able to fund designs such as those by Vogel in 1870 and Howaldt in 1891. However, Gustav Zede designed the Forelle (named after the much beloved German trout fish) and it was the first truly successful German submarine and was launched in 1903. From these early submarines evolved one of the world s most evocative killing machines, the U Boats. Leading up to the development of the U Boat were a series of military escalations, culminating in the start of the Great War. • 20. Driverless Car Ethical Dilemmas Autonomous vehicles are on the verge of drastically changing transportation. They potentially can save millions of dollars in damages and fuel efficiency as well as countless lives. However, the development of driverless cars pose serious ethical problems for software engineers. For instance, the millions of people who earn their living driving trucks or cabs would lose their jobs as they get replaced by computer programs. Another issue is transparency because the driving software needs to be very high quality to increase safety. Company designers and researchers tend to work secretly, so others can t steal their progress but this close mindedness closes off extra ideas and criticism. Finally, the need for safe code delves into morality. An autonomous car will have to make life and death ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, Volkswagen designed its vehicles to produce lower emissions when being tested, but during regular driving, vehicles produced more emissions. This was discovered when people measured the emissions from the tail pipe without hooking it up to a computer. This kind of conspiracy would never have worked if companies had to disclose their data. Another benefit could be greater detection of bugs. The runaway cars of Toyota may have been caused by erroneous code, and widespread access to it may have helped identify the error if there was one. Of course companies shouldn t fully disclose their information, but their engineers and researchers should strive for greater collaboration between companies and universities. • 21. The Importance Of Ethical Codes In Counselling Second argument, let s look back at the ethical codes, section A.6.B ( Extending Counseling Boundaries) states that Counselors consider the risks and benefits of extending current counseling relationships beyond conventional parameters. In extending these boundaries, counselors take appropriate professional precautions such as informed consent, consultation, supervision, and documentation to ensure that judgment is not impaired and no harm occurs. (ACA, 2014). As this code states, if a therapist takes appropriate steps by documenting everything and discussing events in supervision, which we are doing now, we should be safe within the ethical code lines. The Most important point to remember, as long as the client is not hurt during the dual relationship process, we are maintaining our promise of being ethically professional helpers. The third argument is that these codes that we abide by in both counseling and art therapy are not the law. They are merely attempted guidelines for therapists to remind them to not mentally or physically harm their clients. Most of the codes are vague and contradict themselves, for instance for section 1.4 of the American Art therapy Association codes states that Art therapists refrain from entering into multiple relationships with clients if the multiple relationships could reasonably be expected to impair competence or effectiveness of the art therapist to perform his or her functions as an art therapist, or otherwise risks exploitation or ... In both Italian and English, vita refers to life and nova in Italian refers to marvelous or strange, however in English, it refers to brightness (of light). Another symbol in the poem is the Trinity number nine as Dante refers to it every time he has an encounter with Beatrice. In this essay, because Vita Nova has 42 chapters, I will discuss how Beatrice represents (and/or mirrors) light throughout chapters 2 8 (with the definition of Trinity mentioned in chapter 29), through Dante s actual sight and uncontrollable dreams. The Trinity number nine is also found in this chapter, as it was precisely the ninth hour of that day, three o clock in the afternoon (III, 2). Although this is the chapter when Beatrice finally gives Dante her salutation, the chapter s focus is in his dream. In the dream, Dante sees a powerful figure holding his muse in one hand and forcing her to eat a burning object in another (III, 6). As the human like figure came out from a cloud the color of fire (III, 3), it said, ego dominus tuus...vide cor tuum (III, 3; 5) to Dante, the pilgrim, which translates into, I m your lord...look into your heart. In other words, the figure represents light itself (as God) since he claimed to be the lord and because he came from a cloud the color of fire (III, 3). Beatrice represents light because the figure forcibly fed her the burning object, Dante s heart, thus, giving her the ability to see through Dante s most secret chamber as mentioned in chapter two. Although one can argue that since this human like figure uses force against Beatrice and comes in the form of a fiery cloud, this figure can be mistaken as a Demon; however, because both the figure and Beatrice ascent toward the heavens (III, 7), it supports my argument that the figure is actually light ... When these principles or concepts are compared with the macro world, one can find great similarities and even greater dissimilarities between the world wherein electrons rule, and the world wherein human beings live. Superposition is a principle of quantum theory that describes a challenging concept about the nature and behavior of matter and forces at the sub atomic level. The principle of superposition claims that while we do not know what the state of any object is, it is actually in all possible states simultaneously, as long as we don t look to check. It is the measurement itself that causes the object to be limited to a single possibility. In the novel, the mechanic mentions to Alice the Schrodinger experiment. This experiment was analogous to superposition in the macro world. Schrodinger s experiment was to put a cat, flask of poisonous glass, and a mechanism to break the flask should substance decay in a closed box. Mechanic then stated that the substance may or may not decay, therefore, according to the rules of quantum physics you would have a superposition of states, in some of which the decay would have happened and in others it would not. Likewise, fresh water is our most precious resource that people depend on every day. Our society is based around the use of large amounts of water in our everyday lives. Charles Fisher, a three time winner of the Gerald Loeb award, a writer for the magazine Fast Company, and the author of The Walmart Effect and The Big Thirst, tells a different story. In the article Will the World Run out of Fresh Water, which explains that people take water for granted and never see its true value like people in the past, published at the Detroit Greenhaven Press in 2012. Because we use vast amounts of water and never see the process in which water is given to people, Fisherman proposes this idea that water is taken for granted until we run out, which is more than true. Each day, our homes receive gallons upon gallons of water for our living necessities to live a comfortable life. In the article Fisher explains that at least in the developed world, we have gradually been able to stop thinking about water . This is due to being around water all our lives. We have been conditioned from day one to believe fresh water will never run out. Even our emotional connections to water have become submerged and camouflaged , for example when a person in America sees someone spilling a cup of water on the ground they do not even care to tell them they are being wasteful, which ... This is what he refers to as little g globalization. These global interconnections reveal the ties and tensions of globalization. There is also big G globalization which is what Sparke calls using globalization as a buzzword in a political context. A big part of globalization is commodities and commodity chains. A commodity can be simply defined as anything that is bought or sold while a commodity chain is the production process that produces these commodities. Understanding commodities and commodity chains is important to be able to understand globalization. One example of how commodities demonstrate globalization is outsourcing and offshoring. By doing this, companies bring their companies overseas which means that they are interconnected with other parts of the world. It was times when my teammates weren t working hard enough or not moving where I wanted to be that I didn t know how to communicate these problems in an efficient manner in order to get my point across. This caused tension and bad chemistry in our group. In retrospect, I see that I was moving too fast and not pausing to observe what was happening around me. I now see that when getting to an end point in a project, one must always assess the environment and direction that the group is heading pivoting and retracting when it s called for and efficiently communicating with teammates. One aspect of my leadership that I think is a strength is being able to get rolling on a project. Facilitating ideas and coming together to map out the direction of a project is something I excel at. I can assign roles that fit people s skills and give them instruction on where they need to go. If these constrains are in anyway compromised, they may result in the design being ineffective (Maxwell, 2005, p.6). Setting Objectives In Management by Objectives theory the hardest part can be the first step of the process, setting the objectives. When starting this management style there are two questions that you can ask to get yourself started. These questions are; what are the objectives and what are the time frames in which goals should be met (Kotelnikov, 2001, p. 2)? When setting up the objectives for you first time the S.M.A.R.T. method is a good resource to use. This method acts as a guideline to set up objectives and to keep you on the right track. Although the last confirmed lynching was in 1968, there are other forms of racially motivated killings and violence in the United States today such as police brutality and the race riots formed by white supremacist in Charlottesville. White America is linked and always will be to the history of black killings. To understand what some of the lynching s could have looked like, Meeropol made the poem very vivid with many examples of imagery within it as well as the many dark metaphors he placed throughout the poem. To understand why Strange Fruit transpired in the first place, it is important to realize the terrible acts committed during the 1930s. The first slave ship sailed across the Atlantic Ocean in 1619 and from then on, slavery would be etched into the history of America. For 246 years, slaves worked in numerous fields of crops while being sold, traded, raped, and killed. Even after the abolishment of slavery, Jim Crow laws started taking affect soon after around the 1880s. Although Jim Crow laws were separate but equal rights, it was as if they were unfair and unjust rights. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. Ethnic Differences Between Nationality And Ethnicity Rise of Nationalities A group of people tied to a place is a nationality. Ethnicity is similar to nationality. The American nationality includes any citizen, born or immigrated and became a citizen, of the United States. Immigrants consider ethnicity more important than nationality. Violate conflicts can be a result of confusion between nationality and ethnicity. When the company began offering smartphones and personal media players, this became a major strength for the company as it continued to grow. When looking at the root of the company as a personal computer industry, the development of the different types of PCs was a strength for the company as well, because it divided society into three groups and developed PCs that would benefit those pacific groups of individuals. An example of this would be the Mac Pro, the iMac, and the Mac mini. The Mac Pro aimed at professional and business users, the iMac targeted educational and business use, and the Mac mini was for consumer use (pg. 253). In our text, we read that Web 1.0 was the ability to perform read only but with the creation of Web 2.0, we are able to read and write (Bowles, 2010). • 45. The English Peasant Uprising Essay The English Peasant Uprising was motivated by a growing contempt with the government and clergy following the Black Death which was finally set off by a series of immediate social and economic causes. A shortage of workers followed the Black Death with an estimated forty five per cent of the population dying in England . As entire towns were either deserted or left devoid of life, rural peasants increased their mobility into major cities. This shortage of rural workers led to famine as fields were left to go fallow, placing further economic pressure on the peasant classes who survived as the price of food increased. Due to the lack of labourers, the labourers who survived demanded greater wages as they now had increased leverage over ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Schools of thought such as held by the Lollards, followers of theologian and reformer John Wycliffe whom acted as lay preachers, were held responsible for the Uprising as they were critical of the church as an institution, particularly the concept of the Church owning land. As these Lollards travelled and preached their opposition to the Church as temporal power, they resonated with the peasants and became increasingly popular as unlike many of the priests and monks recruited after the Black Death, they were observed to be genuinely pious . The already solid dissatisfaction with the clergy only intensified with the imprisonment of a highly popular Lollard, John Ball. John Ball was imprisoned at Maidstone in Kent when he came into conflict with Simon of Sudbury Archbishop of Canterbury for lay preaching. The Hundred Years war with France is still ongoing at this point which was also adding further pressure to the lower classes due to the taxes needed to fund it. The war was very expensive, which meant more taxes had to be put in place to compensate for the lack of people paying taxes on account of forty five per cent of tax payers being dead. Not only were wages fixed by parliament, but parliament demanded more money from a populace already financially struggling under fixed wages and inflated food prices. • 47. The Blue Ridge Mountains Of North Carolina Vincent Carter 10/4/15 GLY 3311c Homework 2 The Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina is a diverse geological area to study tectonic setting, metamorphic and igneous rocks, and how the tectonic history has affected the development of the minerals in the area. The Blue Ridge Mountains sit within a larger tectonic area that includes part of the smoky mountains and Appalachian mountain chain. The Blue Ridge Mountains sit upon a large thrust plate area that has experienced repeated movement in the orogeny process as the Appalachians were built. This process occurred during the Proterozoic to the Paleozoic period (Tectonic Setting of the Southern Appalachians). Evidence of the faulting includes sedimentary zones at the end of the thrust. Within the thrust areas is high grade metamorphic rocks and some igneous rocks from intrusion during collision events (Hatcher, R). Evidence of the intrusions are the dikes which can be seen and the large granite facies throughout the area (Grant, Willard). The age of the thrusts and the areas where they occurred are dated to varying ages with the oldest tectonic action dated 595 million years ago to the youngest at 265 million years ago (Hatcher, R). The thrust faults in the center of the Blue Ridge area would appear to have the highest grade of metamorphism while the faults to the edge have the lowest grade metamorphism or sedimentary features (Hatcher, Robert, and Arthur Merschat.). this is easily seen because the area where the ... He is undoubtedly correct in this assessment. Indeed, globalization is no longer something to be skeptical of, it is very real and is changing our world exponentially. The affects of globalization, however, continue to be a heated topic for debate. Proponents praise the overall economic lift provided by free trade, the diffusion of cultures, and the spread of democracy and capitalism. Critics cry foul at the loss of national identity, the accelerated and uncontrolled use of natural resources, and the redistribution of wealth into the hands of a few very powerful people and corporations. If it had not been for the increasing awareness of other cultures brought about by globalization Yoga would never have grown to the fad it is today. This prevalence of global fads can be seen in many ways, especially in entertainment and technology. When I was younger I regularly read Japanese manga comics. These comics, long popular in Japan, only recently became popular in America due to the proliferation of American fan translations on the internet. Through manga I learned a lot of Japanese culture and found hours of entertainment that I would not have experienced otherwise. As with the entertainment of Japanese comics, I also play several video games designed in Japan and regularly use technology such as the Sony Playstation. In fact, the computer I type on is of Korean origin. Without globalization these parts of my life would be quite different. The prevalence of technology and ideas can only have a positive impact on the world and my life. The more minds in the world that can cooperatively work to improve our lives the better. My life has definitely been impacted by this aspect of globalization and I am grateful for it. How many hours of enjoyment have I gotten from international entertainment, how much easier does my computer make my life? • 49. Resurfice Vs Hanke Case Study When reviewing the facts of the case Resurfice v. Hanke, it may appear as though it was a clear win for Resurfice inc, however I believe that the Supreme Court of Canada made some key errors in making their decision, ultimately leading the judges to make the wrong decision. Firstly the Supreme court did not place a strong enough emphasis on the design flaws of the Zamboni. As brought forth in court, both the Gasoline tank and the water tank were placed directly beside one another, they were also the same colour. Had the defects of the zamboni not made it so easy to mix the two tanks up, the explosion likely would never had happened. In addition to this Resurfice corp did not do their due diligence to make the Zamboni easier to use. According ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
