Taking a Look at Muscular Dystrophy
The first written account of Muscular Dystrophy occurred in 1830, composed by Sir Charles Bell
(Audrey S. Penn, 2001). His essay, along with many other accounts, display instances of younger boys
getting progressively weaker, losing the ability to walk, and dying at extremely early ages. These
diagnostics continued to become more frequent up into the late 1800s and early 1900s. As these
symptoms were being researched and observed it soon became prevalent that this disease can affect all
people of any sex or age. Muscular Dystrophy (or MD) is a general term representing more than 30
inherited diseases and subcategories that affect the skeletal, and in some cases involuntary, muscle
regions (Hegde, 2012). The gene is recessively X linked, meaning that females are carriers of the
mutation even if they do not have the disease, and males will either have it or not. The X linked
characteristic of MD is the reason why most types are seen more abundantly in males. MD can lead to
the symptoms seen in the 1800s; inability to walk or function properly, substantial weakness, and
potentially death. The reason behind differencing types of MD is because no one case is the same;
they are categorized based of the areas of the body that are affected, the ages that symptoms become
present, and the level of intensity of the disease. Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is present only in
boys, from birth; however, symptoms do not usually show until the ages of 3 5. Another widely
existing disease is

Use Of Juxtaposition In All Quiet On The Western Front
Juxtaposition, a literary device in which two or more people, places, or ideas are placed side by side
for the purpose of contrasting them, is frequently used in Erich Maria Remarque s war novel titled All
Quiet on the Western Front to exaggerate the brutal nature of war. Remarque often offsets these
grotesque descriptions with portrayals of nature and everyday beauty, and utilizes this juxtaposition of
war and nature to portray the true horror of war. When Paul Baumer describes the significance of the
latrines and how they provide a distraction for the men from the war, he paints a picture in the reader s
mind of a beautiful carefree meadow filled with flowers and butterflies, but the reader can infer that
danger still lurks at a distance ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This example of juxtaposition serves to show that even though there may be some calm moments in
battle where everything feels as though it s normal, the soldiers can never truly leave the battle. As the
days go by and the death toll rises, Paul Baumer and his comrades still find ways to laugh, such as the
situation with Haie and his driving bands, and they still find the beauty in the midst of war, though this
optimism will not last for long as the war become more intense with each passing day. One morning,
Baumer notices two butterflies playing in front of their trench, and they eventually settle on the teeth
of a skull , juxtaposing natural beauty with ghastly imagery (Remarque 127). Baumer also notices that
the birds and larks who were nesting a year ago, their young have all grown up; the irony behind this
is that even animals have been given a chance to grow old and start families but the soldiers, the
young men, are cut down in their prime. Remarque also incorporates

Small Change And Democracy In Cyberspace
Technology has opened the door to a new world where our technological advancements have
ultimately created the tools that are necessary to enhance our lifestyles and bring immediate change to
society. In the past, society was not thoroughly developed. In fact, many individuals struggled in
methods of communication. Technology has played an immense role in our development and bringing
change to our lives. As our society has continued developing, technology has unfolded rapidly
introducing methods that have expanded our scientific field, but most importantly it has created
stronger methods of communication where society is able to interact with any individual and share a
message. In the articles, Small Change and Democracy in Cyberspace, we explore the author s
perspective towards technology and its impact on social ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In present day society, technology has had a paramount impact on social activism by creating a voice
for those who have been deprived of one, redefining public awareness through through enhanced
communication and uniting society towards a common goal. Technology has unraveled rapidly, it has
managed to break down barriers that secluded and oppressed us. Technology has allowed us to
communicate our ideas and notions behind a screen. In the past, when we have held protest several
people have united to fight towards a common cause. However, there are those who could not attend
the protest or were located in a different area from the protest. It is in these cases where technology
plays a key role. For those, who are behind a screen, modern technology has allowed them to
participate in events without actually being present. Social media has been a voice for those who are
afraid or have been deprived of one. In our society,

Some other additional benefits of this virtual environment are: * Employee s knowledge can be totally

Q3 * What types of communication are integrated within Sametime s digital environment? What type
of communication is missing? Does it make a difference? * Reciprocal it goes between two or more
people changing rolls. * Linguistic and extra linguistic People communicate through key board
(chatting) or using some familiar codes. * Private and public The communication inside the company
can be private when it occurs between two employees or public when it goes to everyone in the
organization. (In fact, it is not totally private because the conversation can be followed for the
database system.) * Formal The messages use a formal code according to the organization policies. *
Horizontal and vertical It can occur in a same range people or from boss to assistant.
What is missing here is the physical or interpersonal communication. It can make the difference
because when people talk they express a lot of feelings. The main advantage is that employees will not

Use Of Robots In Robotics
Introduction In the present day, innovation in technology is very large. Human want to discover more
and more advantages from technology. In fact, we can see how it grew in nowadays. A lot of
companies have been spending their finances to invest in smarter technology. They know that if they
don t make the new things, they will be left behind. Robot is one of the best method that many
companies want to invest on, and their purpose is replacing human at some fields, which can be
dangerous. It is not easy to adapt robots into our life because it directly affects the labor work.
Unemployed rate is still high and many government avoid using robotics in most working fields. This
research is about the usage of robots in healthcare and business. For this report, the two articles that
will be deeply discussed are Are we ready for virtual physicians? by Julie Connelly. and Robots
invade small businesses by Kimberly J. Studer Mark D. Dibner.
Rhetorical context
This informative article, Are we ready for virtual physicians? , was created in 2004 and was a period
of technology development, so this article still have value until now. With the information, it does
relate to how robots can be provided in health care. For example, the author Julie Connelly had
discussed that there are [s]everal ways in which robots might help clinicians come to mind. First, the
robot might help us reach our patients. A physician who works among several urban hospitals or who

Green Bay Essay
I think that I would be a good fit for UW Green Bay because of what Green Bay has to offer. I got the
opportunity to visit Green Bay on two occasions, once with my cousin Michaela Haas, who has
graduated from Green Bay, and once during your Music and Art Open House on March 2 earlier this
year. After visiting Green Bay, I knew that I would fit in because of how open of a campus it is. I have
witnessed the overwhelmingly expansive music program which Green Bay has to offer and I feel as if
this is a place where I can succeed and achieve my musical potential.
There are many reasons that I have been looking at applying at Green Bay. One such reason is that
Green Bay has produced some of the most human people I know, which probably sounds ... Show

Apart from the class size, the campus itself is another reason I really think UWGB is great for me.
Green Bay has so many separate building that serve their own individual purpose from the library, to
the recreational center, and the auditoriums, into the ever famous tunnels beneath the campus. Not
only do you have subject specific building but you have this network or tunnels to better aid the
students in their commute to their classes in the frigged weather of the Wisconsin winter. This is not
only a luxury but a real deal maker for me because it ensure that I ll be able to get to my classes on
time, ready to learn instead of barging in late and unprepared. These are just some of the reason I feel
like UW Green Bay would be a perfect fit for me on my journey to bettering my education.

Enemy Mine Thesis
Enemy Mine is a 1985 German American science fiction film directed by Wolfgang Petersen and
written by Edward Khmara, based on Barry B. Longyear s novella of the same name. The story talks
about a spaceship pilot Willis Davidge(Dennis Quaid) and a Drac fighter Jeriba Jerry Shigan(Louis

Beach Descriptive Essay
After lazily waking up, my family and I head to the beach to enjoy the brisk day. It s only around
seventy five degrees, but that doesn t falter our excitement for the beach. The sun shines through the
clouds as we head down to pick a spot. The waves are calm and inviting as we lay our stuff down. The
wind is moving through the beachgrass like a quiet whisper. The seagulls caw, and attempt to steal the
snacks we brought. There s some kids playing in the water, but more are playing in the sand since the
water s so cold. Days like this are quite typical at the beach in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
In Hilton Head, near Coligny Beach, the small village where we stay is quite somnolent. It seems like
no one is ever awake before 9am. In the center of the sleepy town there s a Piggly Wiggly. Everyone
goes in there to get their groceries and beach supplies. Next to it there s an ice cream shop, the Frozen
Moo, which has some of the best ice cream I ve ever had. The shop has at least ninety different flavors
from Apple Pie to Rainbow Sherbet. There s a mural on the wall of cows surfing at the beach with
brightly colored chairs and tables; going along with the cow theme, there s even a life size replica of a
cow that they dress up for holidays. When walking into the town center, the beach is right across from
it. The smell of the ocean air and breeze coming through the town almost hypothesizes you to move
towards the waves. Since it s fairly cold in the morning, no one is ever there.

Song Of Solomon Short Story
The sun had long since receded pasted the hills and the moon, tried as it might, could not poke through
the thick storm clouds. But that did not stop these men from congregating, not the powerful winds, the
beating rain, nor the sky splitting lightening. Their cathedral was calling to them, the old run down
barn in the middle of an abandoned field. From the barn just under the drumming rain, you could hear
the stomping of feet. Just under the howling winds, an orchestra of screams, choruses of curses ring.
And just under the crashing of thunder, the sounds of bone meeting flesh beats. The pit sits in the barn,
the pit is where the shouts, cries and curses are being flung, and the pit is where the champ mud
covered, stands toe to toe with another would be challenger. Men of all ages encircle the pit; the older
ones pointing out differences in the strengths and weaknesses of the fighters. While the young bost

Wooden Fish Songs by Ruthanne Lum McCunn

Wooden Fish Songs, a historical novel written by Ruthanne Lum McCunn, is written with three
narrators. The main character in this story is Lue Gim Gong, a Chinese immigrant who gives up his
country and family to pursue his passion for botany. Three women that knew him the best narrate Lue
Gim Gong s story from three distinct cultures and three distinct points of view. They include his
mother Sum Jui, his teacher Fanny Burlingame, and a friend that he makes named Sheba. Their
contrasting perspectives are carefully interwoven from chapter to chapter. Lue, however, never gets a
voice throughout the book; this makes Lue Gim Gong s life even more puzzling than it already is. ...

Fanny also converts Lue to Christianity and encourages his garden research but keeps him financially
dependent. Fanny is the daughter of a strict industrialist; she is well drawn in this novel. She is too
strong to accept the lack of power women faced at the time. Uninterested in men, she invests all of her
emotions in Jesus until she meets Lue Gim Gong.
She sees Lue as her creation; others see him as her pet. In fact, he is more independent than she can
accept. Rudely rejecting the possibility of a positive influence from his own family, she says how she
made him as much of an improved variety of Chinaman as his salmonberry, cherry currant, and
tomato were of plants (McCunn, 154). Though her closeness to him it allows her to be offended by
others racism, as she regards him as someone special rather than a typical Chinaman. After Fanny s
death, he was barred from the church they had regularly worshipped in, on account of his color.
Finally there is Sheba, Fanny s black servant whose father was murdered by the Ku Klux Klan shortly
after winning his freedom from slavery. Sheba worked alongside Lue in the orange groves and
probably understood him best. This is because Sheba s eyes were the least blinded by prejudice and
ignorance. Unlike their white neighbors, neither Lue nor Sheba was too proud to share their different
knowledge and company.

The Modern American View of Disability
In Rosmarie Garland Thomson: The politics of Staring , expresses how our society has changed over
time. She views human s theories in four different visual rhetoric s which in this case I am going to
call them speechmaking s: the wondrous, the realistic, the sentimental and the exotic. From these four
figures of speech Garland has shown our inclination to see disabled people by the way they are
discriminated by the rest of society. Garland makes references to this by showing pictures and
examples that highlights how the modern American world views disability.
The first figure of speech Garland discusses is the wondrous. She points out how the wondrous
represent monsters, giants, meaning the good and evil, The wondrous viewpoint is defined by the
association of the disabled with the normal, creating a disconnect in what the viewer sees as able. By
visualizing a disabled person moving out physical trials ranging from menial tasks to physical feats of
strength and will, the viewer creates a hollowness between the dexterity and capability to perform and
the assumed lack of abilities of the subject. By saying The antecedents of the wondrous disabled
figures are the monsters of antiquity, who inspired awe, foretold the future, or bore divine signs, and
freaks, who were the celebrities in nineteenth century dime museums and sideshows she shows how

American Mariners History
The early modern sea particularly the Atlantic can be characterized as a space of great instability. It
was here that communication and trade between nations became easily accessible, but the lack of
uniform maritime regulations and commercial competition fostered hostility between states, resulting
in prolonged periods of war. One distinct product of this environment was pirates, who took to the
high seas in search of ships to illegally capture and raid of their goods. For the great maritime nations
of the 16th to 18th centuries, pirates were simply criminals that threatened the progress of the world
economy, but history has shown that they were much more complex figures. At the same time as they
were violent, ruthless, and defiant outlaws, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The reasons for becoming or turning pirate have been widely theorized, and it seems as though a
multitude of social, political, and economic factors were at play. On an individual level, the dangerous
and almost inevitably fatal nature of piracy makes it improbable that one would join a crew if they felt
as though they had other alternatives. Instead, it is more likely that piracy was a last resort refuge for a
dejected class of sailors who did not fit in with normative cultural standards, but could not escape the
fact that society dictated that they must work to survive regardless. Because piracy stemmed from a
distinctly maritime class and not the general landed population, it is easier to understand why it may
have been seen as a viable option. These men were already familiar with the principles of teamwork,
harmony, and trust that were

necessary to survive on a ship, and their lengthy voyages often made them ill adjusted to life on land.
There are two main reasons why a sailor would have crossed the line between legal and illegal
maritime service: perceived injustice and peacetime layoffs. Unlike the pirate ship, both navy and
merchant ships were more dictatorial than democratic; their captains were not

Analysis Of The Book Ephesians
What is the significance of mentioning the coming ages? Where is this being addressed? Was there a
strong understanding of who Satan was? The genre of Ephesians is Epistles. Read the whole epistle in
one sitting to get the big idea of the letter and its main contours. Try to write a big idea/theme of the
book after reading it. Think in terms of the paragraphs being the main units of thought. Beware of
isolating verses from the paragraph. Knowing the structure of epistles helps you know where you are
in the letter. Do some background reading in order to understand better the epistle s main contours and
its historical and cultural setting. Paul wrote the book of Ephesians, while he was imprisoned. The
date that Ephesians was written is best dated between 60 90 AD, but closer to 90 since Ignatius is the
earliest known person to quote it. Traditionally it is understood that this letter was written to believers
in Ephesus of Asia Minor. Through this book Paul reveals who we are with and without Christ.
Ephesians discusses the topic of blending the Jewish and non Jewish Christians into one community.
The reoccurring theme in Ephesians is God s purpose and plan in offering redemption to His people
and the manifestation of that purpose in the life of the believer. Ephesians seeks to shape believers by
reminding them how wonderful God s work in Christ is, how significant their unity with Christ is, and
what living for Christ looks like. Redemption has made it possible for

Senate Filibustering System
Members of Congress are charged with three primary duties writing laws, overseeing the
implementation of laws, and serving the needs of their constituents. Senate Filibuster, House Rules
Committee and the Conference Committee all have had a profound effect in the lawmaking process.
Additionally, general accounting office and hearings are both methods that Congress employs in order
to maintain oversight over the federal bureaucracy. Lastly, Casework drastically affects members
attention to legislation because it diverts their time, and resources away from focusing on legislation.

Trinitarian Beliefs
It is very important to know what you believe in. The united and trinitarian church both believe in
great fundamental truths. They both stand firmly on each of their beliefs, but also differ greatly. If you
do not know what you believe in, your faith may be tested.
Both the united and trinitarian churches hold great worship services. They are both laid back and act
freely on how they feel or how the spirit of god moves on them. In the oneness church, worship is
focused on Jesus only. They worship Jesus as being the father, son, and holy ghost as one. In the
trinitarian church, worship is focused on three separate people; the father, son, and holy ghost. Each of
the doctrines worship greatly, but it is important to know which style of worship fits you best. (
Baptism is an important demonstration of faith in both the united and trinitarian pentecostal church. In
both the oneness and trinitarian church you are baptized to separate yourself from the past person you
no longer want to be. In the oneness pentecostal church baptism is held differently from the trinitarian
church. In the oneness church before going underwater, the preacher will baptize you saying in Jesus s

Cs Lewis Research Paper
Today, despite being written over six decades ago, the Chronicles of Narnia still remain a popular and
influential book series. The man behind this is Clives Staples Lewis or C.S. Lewis. He is mostly
remembered as a Christian writer, however, there were many events that shaped his mindset. He
excelled in many professions such as philosopher, theologian, professor, novelist, children s writer,
literary critic, and lecturer. C.S. Lewis overcame many obstacles in his life and is one of the most

in the Protestant heart of Ireland at a time of struggle between the native Catholic Irish and the
colonist Protestants (McGrath 3). The 1901 Census of Ireland showed that his family consisted of his

Nurse Poaching Poor Countries
I believe that nurse poaching from poor nations is unethical. Although there appears to be a shortage
in both developing and developed countries, a nurse should not have to feel that to become successful,
one must leave his or her homeland and family. Each country should address the nursing shortage and
create a system beneficial for recruiting and maintaining nurses within the country instead of
recruiting from poor nations. I believe that enticing nurses from developing countries by offering high
salaries is unfair and unethical because it worsens the state of the developing country by creating a
higher nursing shortage and devastatingly breaks the nurse s family apart.

The dragon is unique. In many different cultures the dragon can be good, but in others it can be bad. If
the dragon is a symbol of China than there has to be a resemblance between China and the dragon.
China has invented a large percent of the products that people use everyday. For example, the
toothbrush was made in 1498 from bamboo and the neck hairs of a hog. Like in China the dragon
represents goodness and inventions are goodness and help. But China is widely known for their
pollution, which is negative. Connecting with other cultures the dragon is a negative character just like
the pollution is negative.
Additionally, according to
http://www.newworldencyclopedia.org/entry/Chinese_dragon#Chinese_mythology_and_culture , In
Chinese mythology, the dragon was revered in several different ways.

Fingerprinting Identification and Understanding the Term...
Fingerprinting Identification and Understanding the Term Daubert Hearing
From the early days, with little literary reference material, to the current day, with substantially more,
but still insufficient formation, the science of fingerprint identification has managed to maintain its
credibility and usefulness. Although, academic institutions have yet to recognize the field as an
applied science and include it in the curricula, which would provide directed research and literary
reference, in libraries. Without this academic recognition, progress in the field of fingerprint is
destined to be sluggish. Description of fingerprint identification as a forensic science or an ~app1ied
science in no way implies that is not a reliable science. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Daubert s opinion states that: the Federal Rules of Evidence superseded General Acceptance tests for
admissibility of novel scientific evidence. Prior to the Daubert hearing from 1923 until 1993 the rigid
general acceptance test, which arose from Ftye v. United States, 293 f2d. 1013 (D.C. Cir. 1923) is at
odds with the liberal thrust of the Federal Rules of Evidence. It is the trial judge that must still screen
scientific evidence to ensure it is relevant and reliable to be used in the court of law. The focus, of
courts, must be solely on principles and methodology, not on the conclusions they generate. The court
should consider factors but by no means exclusive criteria in fulfilling its responsibilities by 1) Testing
and validation of the theory or technique and what are the results 2) Has peer review being done on
the theory or technique or publication on such result. 3) What is the known rate of error or potential on
the theory or technique, and 4) what is the general acceptance or widespread acceptance of this theory
or technique.
In 1998 the attorneys for Byron Mitchell file a Daubert Hearing Fingerprints. United Stales of

The, The House Slave, And Persephone, Falling By Rita Dove
Rita Dove, traversing historical, epic, tragic and lyrical poetry, blurs the lines of the concrete cultural
constructions of gender, sexuality, and ethnicity in her poems Capriccio , The House Slave and
Persephone, Falling to demonstrate the political involutions of both race and gender. By utilizing
extensive diction, striking symbolism, puissant imagery, classical allusions, and visceral metaphors,
she is able to show how although she distills the experiences of oppressed groups, she conveys her
thoughts on the failures of mother daughter relationships, the plight for racial equality, and her deep
vexation at the acknowledgement of race.
First, littered with visceral metaphors and classical allusions to show the complexities of relationships
especially the mother daughter relationship, is Dove s poem Persephone, Falling . In Siting the Poet:
Rita Dove s Refiguring of Traditions , Susan Van Dyne states that If the myth of Demeter and
Persephone promises that death is followed by regeneration, rupture of the mother daughter bond by
its recuperation, Dove s revision in Mother Love emphasizes a longing for what is already lost as a
permanent feature in the lives of both mother and daughter. In Persephone, Falling the myth of
Demeter and Persephone is used symbolically for mother daughter relationships in general.

plate with the highest point to the rear or center. Avoid placing foods of equal heights around the edge
of the plate, leaving a hole in the center the eye will naturally be drawn to that gap. The plate s
composition should flow naturally. For example, make the highest point the back of the plate and have
the rest of the food become gradually shorter toward the front of the plate. Slicing and fanning foods

Analysis Of Jhumpa Lahiri s Novel The Namesake
Jhumpa Lahiri s novel The Namesake (2003) is a culture oriented, more precisely, a Bengali diasporic
culture oriented novel. As a diasporic novel it represents the diasporic themes like displaced,
dislocated and deterritorised feelings of the first generation expatriates like Ashima Ganguli, the
female protagonist of the novel; assimilated, translational and transcultural tendency among the
diasporic people, especially among the second generation immigrants in the novel like Gogol Ganguli,
Sonali Ganguli and Moushumi Mazoomdar; a feeling of nostalgia towards the natal/imaginary
homeland by the first generation expatriates like Ashima Ganguli; the community feeling among the
diasporic people; the familial, human relationships within a diasporic family in a diasporic land and
other traits. Ashima Ganguli is moored in diasporic land with her feelings of rootlessness/uprooting/re
rooting/tracking root and also finds routes to discover her at home in many homes in the world. The
Bengali diasporic cultures are amalgamated dexterously in the texture of the novel. Lahiri s The
Namesake was adapted as a film in 2006, released on March 9, 2007, following screenings at film
festivals in Toronto and New York City. The film is directed by an Indian born filmmaker Mira Nair,
living in the US. Sooni Taraporevala adapted the novel into a screenplay. The film received positive

Comparing Tiy And Agamemnon
Compare and Contrast: Tiy and Agamemnon In this essay I will compare and contrast two ancient
sculptures. The first is Queen Tiy, from Medinet el Gurob. This self portrait sculpture depicts Tiy s
determined and assertive demeanor throughout her lifetime with its use of deep grooves and idealized
bone structure. The second sculpture is The Mask of Agamemnon, a gold funeral mask from Shaft
Grave V, Grave Circle A (Stokstad and Cothren). This mask was a symbol used to ensure that King
Agamemnon would have wealth in the afterlife. These sculptures have their differences; however,
both contain a higher message of supernatural supremacy within the afterlife.
Queen Tiy, queen of 18th dynasty Egypt, was the wife of pharaoh Amenhotep III and mother of
Akhenaten (Mark). Many of the pieces showed the riches that Tiy and Amenhotep III gathered during
their 38 year reign. It is said that during this era, Egypt was the most powerful and richest nation in the
region (Mark). A funerary silver headdress covered in gold cobras and jewelry particularly had
previously accompanied this piece of Queen Tiy; however, it was later removed after her son gained
power. This could haven stood as a symbol to the people that while her supremacy had ended, and her
new role was more of a goddess figure than a lavish queen. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Her strong force with the Egyptian court made her quite a popular subject to feature on art pieces at
the time. The Queen Tiy sculpture, made with yew wood, ebony, glass, silver, gold and faience inlays,

seems to emerge from a miniature portrait head that reveals the exquisite bone structure of her dark
skimmed face, with its arched brows, uplifted eyes, and full lips (Stokstad and

Analysis Of Altruism In The Fountainhead
Adapting Egoism over Altruism: Equality s Escape from Collectivism
No creator was prompted by a desire to serve his brothers, for his brothers rejected the gift he offered
and that gift destroyed the slothful routine of their lives (Rand, The Fountainhead). As described in the
novel The Fountainhead, history has shown to repeat itself by punishing the inventors of new objects
that go against societal normalities. This is evident with Equality 7 2521, the protagonist in Ayn Rand
s book Anthem. Set in a future free of technology, Anthem depicts a man s struggle to free himself
from collectivism. In the novel, society has put strict rules in place to ensure members are controlled
and free from independent thought. Equality acknowledges these rules throughout the book yet still
breaks them to pursue his passion for learning and inventing. Equality s decision to put his own
interests before society s ultimately leads to his liberation. During the book, Equality internally
struggles between doing what is morally right for society and following what he wants. In the city,
rules and expectations are put in place to eliminate individuality. One of these, mentioned in another
piece by Rand, The Fountainhead, is the idea of Altruism, the doctrine which demands that man live
for others and place others above oneself (Rand, The Fountainhead). This eventually leads to men
[having] been taught dependence as a virtue (Rand, The Fountainhead). She further elaborates how
society has implemented Altruism as an excuse to eliminate individuality rather than using it as a tool
to genuinely help others. Since this concept is preached to everyone their whole life, they grow up
only knowing altruism and don t know what individuality is or how they can express it. However,
Equality begins to question the idea of helping others before himself and debates between doing his
undesirable street sweeping job for the city or pursuing his quest for knowledge. Although he would
much rather learn new material, he still feels obligated to carry out his role in the society. This proves
how what he has been taught holds him back from achieving his goal, as Equality is initially confused
on what to do and hesitates. Even though the

Analysis Of Nick Carraway In The Great Gatsby
In the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald Nick Carraway, at first seems like a big and
important part of the novel but once we meet Jay Gatsby that changes. Nick takes a back seat to be the
narrator for Gatsby s story. As a narrator Nick is the most effective choice for The Great Gatsby. This
is proven by his willingness to withhold judgment. his relationship to each of the main characters.his
outsider status and perceptiveness. In my younger and more vulnerable, years my father gave me some
advice that I ve been turning over in my mind ever since. Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone,

While Nick is in the apartment with Tom, at the same time he imagines himself standing on the street
looking at the apartment above in wonder as to what it is like to be involved in one of those parties.
Even though he is now inside one of the parties that others may dream about, Nick still feels as if he is
not really one of them. He feels like this throughout the novel, he has rich friends and he goes to
luxurious parties but he never feels like he belongs and he is never treated like he belongs. This
outsider status helps him be a great narrator because it helps him give the reader the insider experience
but also helps keep their distance and not get too attached to that world. If Nick were an insider the
reader would not be shown a fair view of Gatsby s story. The reader would only see the East Egg side
and never explore the West Egg side of life. Having Nick as both within and without gives the
advantage of introducing the reader to certain aspects of New York s elite world, while also being
shocked and skeptical of them as an outsider would

Baseball Is The Worst Deal Ever
Baseball is like church, Leo Durocher once said, many attend, few understand. Nearly everyone
agrees that baseball is America s pastime but not nearly everyone understands it or it s intricate parts;
the same can be said for negotiation. The art of negotiation transcends any one topic or area. From our
very beginnings as a country when we scored what went down as one of the greatest deals in history,
the Louisiana Purchase, and later what may be known as the worst deal ever, the Boston Red Sox
trading Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees. Contract negotiation has evolved immensely since the
sport s inception in 1839.
Like most professional sports, Major League Baseball has a plethora of negotiation systems, both
formal and informal, that rule how they conduct business. For example, in 1935 Congress passed the
National Labor Relations Act (NLRA), which was given the authority to produce, amend, and rescind
rules and regulations therein. This Act by Congress empowers employees outside of the government in
what is commonly referred to as the private sector, to unionize and use the tools of collective
bargaining to improve a number of issues in their work place. Specifically, Major League Baseball and
the Players Union negotiate after the end of every contractual agreement for things such as minimum
player salaries, player safety, fan safety, and even things such as league expansion. In fact, Major
League Baseball was the first professional sports organization to come to

Billy The Kid Research Paper
I don t blame you for writing of me as you have. You had to believe other stories, but then I don t
know if anyone would believe anything good of me anyway, Billy the Kid. Although many people
believe Billy the kid was a bad person, there are many stories of Billy that make him seem like a
carefree and funny person. Billy the Kid had to overcome lots of obstacles in his life and those
hardships are what made him a bad person. Billy s real name was Henry McCarty,he was also known
as William H. Bonney (2 Billy ). Many rumors have been stated about Billy the Kid for years, but
what is the real life of Billy the Kid? When Billy was still a child his mother remarried a guy named
William Antrim but she shortly died of Tuberculosis. Antrim didn t want the burden of raising two
small boys, so he separated them and placed them in foster homes (Brothers). At the age of 14, the
smooth cheeked, blue eyed McCarty was forced to find work in a hotel, washing and waiting tables at
the restaurant ( Old ). Before Billy s mother died he had a younger brother named Joseph, who is also

Consciousness In The German Ideology
Before one is able to consider this quote, the concept of materialism and consciousness must be
dissected. According to Marx, materialism is not only the way people s beliefs are conditioned by
material activities, but also the fact that people s ideologies are conditioned by history and the powers
of production. Consciousness plays a large role in his definition of materialism, because they are
inherently connected. For example, The production of ideas, of conceptions, of consciousness is
directly interwoven with the material activity and the material relationships of men; it is the language
of actual life (Marx, 111). Marx also defines consciousness as an economic process; in other words,
economic determinism defines consciousness and even history itself. This differs greatly from Hegel s
idea that consciousness is a process called the dialectic, which includes distinguishing between thesis
and antithesis in order to come to a conclusion. Although Marx utilizes the dialectic to analyze
materialism and consciousness in The German Ideology, he goes even further than Hegel and uses this
dialectic thinking to challenge Hegel s own concepts. It is important to understand the concept that the
process of thinking is actually a reflection of the external world through consciousness, because then
one can connect the idea that it is more of a relationship than an externalized object. Marx explains
this notion when he states, In the social production of their existence, men

  • 2. Taking a Look at Muscular Dystrophy The first written account of Muscular Dystrophy occurred in 1830, composed by Sir Charles Bell (Audrey S. Penn, 2001). His essay, along with many other accounts, display instances of younger boys getting progressively weaker, losing the ability to walk, and dying at extremely early ages. These diagnostics continued to become more frequent up into the late 1800s and early 1900s. As these symptoms were being researched and observed it soon became prevalent that this disease can affect all people of any sex or age. Muscular Dystrophy (or MD) is a general term representing more than 30 inherited diseases and subcategories that affect the skeletal, and in some cases involuntary, muscle regions (Hegde, 2012). The gene is recessively X linked, meaning that females are carriers of the mutation even if they do not have the disease, and males will either have it or not. The X linked characteristic of MD is the reason why most types are seen more abundantly in males. MD can lead to the symptoms seen in the 1800s; inability to walk or function properly, substantial weakness, and potentially death. The reason behind differencing types of MD is because no one case is the same; they are categorized based of the areas of the body that are affected, the ages that symptoms become present, and the level of intensity of the disease. Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is present only in boys, from birth; however, symptoms do not usually show until the ages of 3 5. Another widely existing disease is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Use Of Juxtaposition In All Quiet On The Western Front Juxtaposition, a literary device in which two or more people, places, or ideas are placed side by side for the purpose of contrasting them, is frequently used in Erich Maria Remarque s war novel titled All Quiet on the Western Front to exaggerate the brutal nature of war. Remarque often offsets these grotesque descriptions with portrayals of nature and everyday beauty, and utilizes this juxtaposition of war and nature to portray the true horror of war. When Paul Baumer describes the significance of the latrines and how they provide a distraction for the men from the war, he paints a picture in the reader s mind of a beautiful carefree meadow filled with flowers and butterflies, but the reader can infer that danger still lurks at a distance ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This example of juxtaposition serves to show that even though there may be some calm moments in battle where everything feels as though it s normal, the soldiers can never truly leave the battle. As the days go by and the death toll rises, Paul Baumer and his comrades still find ways to laugh, such as the situation with Haie and his driving bands, and they still find the beauty in the midst of war, though this optimism will not last for long as the war become more intense with each passing day. One morning, Baumer notices two butterflies playing in front of their trench, and they eventually settle on the teeth of a skull , juxtaposing natural beauty with ghastly imagery (Remarque 127). Baumer also notices that the birds and larks who were nesting a year ago, their young have all grown up; the irony behind this is that even animals have been given a chance to grow old and start families but the soldiers, the young men, are cut down in their prime. Remarque also incorporates ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Green Bay Essay I think that I would be a good fit for UW Green Bay because of what Green Bay has to offer. I got the opportunity to visit Green Bay on two occasions, once with my cousin Michaela Haas, who has graduated from Green Bay, and once during your Music and Art Open House on March 2 earlier this year. After visiting Green Bay, I knew that I would fit in because of how open of a campus it is. I have witnessed the overwhelmingly expansive music program which Green Bay has to offer and I feel as if this is a place where I can succeed and achieve my musical potential. There are many reasons that I have been looking at applying at Green Bay. One such reason is that Green Bay has produced some of the most human people I know, which probably sounds ... Green Bay has so many separate building that serve their own individual purpose from the library, to the recreational center, and the auditoriums, into the ever famous tunnels beneath the campus. Not only do you have subject specific building but you have this network or tunnels to better aid the students in their commute to their classes in the frigged weather of the Wisconsin winter. This is not only a luxury but a real deal maker for me because it ensure that I ll be able to get to my classes on time, ready to learn instead of barging in late and unprepared. These are just some of the reason I feel like UW Green Bay would be a perfect fit for me on my journey to bettering my education. Aside from all I ve said I must explain one of my personal beliefs, principle, moral value, or however you d like to view it as before I start explaining myself. feel it s not necessary to focus on yourself but rather what you can do for others which is why I fell in love with teaching. We also learn that we may be more similar to our enemies than we think and possibly have more in common with those we hate. • 9. Beach Descriptive Essay After lazily waking up, my family and I head to the beach to enjoy the brisk day. It s only around seventy five degrees, but that doesn t falter our excitement for the beach. The sun shines through the clouds as we head down to pick a spot. The waves are calm and inviting as we lay our stuff down. The wind is moving through the beachgrass like a quiet whisper. The seagulls caw, and attempt to steal the snacks we brought. There s some kids playing in the water, but more are playing in the sand since the water s so cold. Days like this are quite typical at the beach in Hilton Head, South Carolina. In Hilton Head, near Coligny Beach, the small village where we stay is quite somnolent. It seems like no one is ever awake before 9am. In the center of the sleepy town there s a Piggly Wiggly. Everyone goes in there to get their groceries and beach supplies. Next to it there s an ice cream shop, the Frozen Moo, which has some of the best ice cream I ve ever had. The shop has at least ninety different flavors from Apple Pie to Rainbow Sherbet. There s a mural on the wall of cows surfing at the beach with brightly colored chairs and tables; going along with the cow theme, there s even a life size replica of a cow that they dress up for holidays. When walking into the town center, the beach is right across from it. The smell of the ocean air and breeze coming through the town almost hypothesizes you to move towards the waves. Since it s fairly cold in the morning, no one is ever there. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

But that did not stop these men from congregating, not the powerful winds, the beating rain, nor the sky splitting lightening. Their cathedral was calling to them, the old run down barn in the middle of an abandoned field. From the barn just under the drumming rain, you could hear the stomping of feet. Just under the howling winds, an orchestra of screams, choruses of curses ring. And just under the crashing of thunder, the sounds of bone meeting flesh beats. The pit sits in the barn, the pit is where the shouts, cries and curses are being flung, and the pit is where the champ mud covered, stands toe to toe with another would be challenger. Men of all ages encircle the pit; the older ones pointing out differences in the strengths and weaknesses of the fighters. Wooden Fish Songs by Ruthanne Lum McCunn Essay Wooden Fish Songs by Ruthanne Lum McCunn Works Cited Not Included Wooden Fish Songs, a historical novel written by Ruthanne Lum McCunn, is written with three narrators. The main character in this story is Lue Gim Gong, a Chinese immigrant who gives up his country and family to pursue his passion for botany. Three women that knew him the best narrate Lue Gim Gong s story from three distinct cultures and three distinct points of view. They include his mother Sum Jui, his teacher Fanny Burlingame, and a friend that he makes named Sheba. Their contrasting perspectives are carefully interwoven from chapter to chapter. Lue, however, never gets a voice throughout the book; this makes Lue Gim Gong s life even more puzzling than it already is. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Fanny also converts Lue to Christianity and encourages his garden research but keeps him financially dependent. Fanny is the daughter of a strict industrialist; she is well drawn in this novel. She is too strong to accept the lack of power women faced at the time. Uninterested in men, she invests all of her emotions in Jesus until she meets Lue Gim Gong. She sees Lue as her creation; others see him as her pet. In fact, he is more independent than she can accept. Rudely rejecting the possibility of a positive influence from his own family, she says how she made him as much of an improved variety of Chinaman as his salmonberry, cherry currant, and tomato were of plants (McCunn, 154). Though her closeness to him it allows her to be offended by others racism, as she regards him as someone special rather than a typical Chinaman. After Fanny s death, he was barred from the church they had regularly worshipped in, on account of his color. Finally there is Sheba, Fanny s black servant whose father was murdered by the Ku Klux Klan shortly after winning his freedom from slavery. Sheba worked alongside Lue in the orange groves and probably understood him best. This is because Sheba s eyes were the least blinded by prejudice and ignorance. • 12. The Modern American View Of Disability Gonzalez 1 Odette Gonzalez Professor Jason Tucker WRI 102 L Assignment 1 3 February 2015 The Modern American View of Disability In Rosmarie Garland Thomson: The politics of Staring , expresses how our society has changed over time. She views human s theories in four different visual rhetoric s which in this case I am going to call them speechmaking s: the wondrous, the realistic, the sentimental and the exotic. From these four figures of speech Garland has shown our inclination to see disabled people by the way they are discriminated by the rest of society. Garland makes references to this by showing pictures and examples that highlights how the modern American world views disability. The first figure of speech Garland discusses is the wondrous. She points out how the wondrous represent monsters, giants, meaning the good and evil, The wondrous viewpoint is defined by the association of the disabled with the normal, creating a disconnect in what the viewer sees as able. By visualizing a disabled person moving out physical trials ranging from menial tasks to physical feats of strength and will, the viewer creates a hollowness between the dexterity and capability to perform and the assumed lack of abilities of the subject. By saying The antecedents of the wondrous disabled figures are the monsters of antiquity, who inspired awe, foretold the future, or bore divine signs, and freaks, who were the celebrities in nineteenth century dime museums and sideshows she shows how ... It was here that communication and trade between nations became easily accessible, but the lack of uniform maritime regulations and commercial competition fostered hostility between states, resulting in prolonged periods of war. One distinct product of this environment was pirates, who took to the high seas in search of ships to illegally capture and raid of their goods. The reasons for becoming or turning pirate have been widely theorized, and it seems as though a multitude of social, political, and economic factors were at play. On an individual level, the dangerous and almost inevitably fatal nature of piracy makes it improbable that one would join a crew if they felt as though they had other alternatives. Instead, it is more likely that piracy was a last resort refuge for a dejected class of sailors who did not fit in with normative cultural standards, but could not escape the fact that society dictated that they must work to survive regardless. Because piracy stemmed from a distinctly maritime class and not the general landed population, it is easier to understand why it may have been seen as a viable option. These men were already familiar with the principles of teamwork, harmony, and trust that were 2 necessary to survive on a ship, and their lengthy voyages often made them ill adjusted to life on land. There are two main reasons why a sailor would have crossed the line between legal and illegal maritime service: perceived injustice and peacetime layoffs. The date that Ephesians was written is best dated between 60 90 AD, but closer to 90 since Ignatius is the earliest known person to quote it. Traditionally it is understood that this letter was written to believers in Ephesus of Asia Minor. Through this book Paul reveals who we are with and without Christ. Ephesians discusses the topic of blending the Jewish and non Jewish Christians into one community. The reoccurring theme in Ephesians is God s purpose and plan in offering redemption to His people and the manifestation of that purpose in the life of the believer. This self portrait sculpture depicts Tiy s determined and assertive demeanor throughout her lifetime with its use of deep grooves and idealized bone structure. The second sculpture is The Mask of Agamemnon, a gold funeral mask from Shaft Grave V, Grave Circle A (Stokstad and Cothren). This mask was a symbol used to ensure that King Agamemnon would have wealth in the afterlife. These sculptures have their differences; however, both contain a higher message of supernatural supremacy within the afterlife. Queen Tiy, queen of 18th dynasty Egypt, was the wife of pharaoh Amenhotep III and mother of Akhenaten (Mark). Many of the pieces showed the riches that Tiy and Amenhotep III gathered during their 38 year reign. Analysis Of Altruism In The Fountainhead Adapting Egoism over Altruism: Equality s Escape from Collectivism No creator was prompted by a desire to serve his brothers, for his brothers rejected the gift he offered and that gift destroyed the slothful routine of their lives (Rand, The Fountainhead). As described in the novel The Fountainhead, history has shown to repeat itself by punishing the inventors of new objects that go against societal normalities. This is evident with Equality 7 2521, the protagonist in Ayn Rand s book Anthem. Set in a future free of technology, Anthem depicts a man s struggle to free himself from collectivism. In the novel, society has put strict rules in place to ensure members are controlled and free from independent thought. Equality acknowledges these rules throughout the book yet still breaks them to pursue his passion for learning and inventing. Equality s decision to put his own interests before society s ultimately leads to his liberation. During the book, Equality internally struggles between doing what is morally right for society and following what he wants. In the city, rules and expectations are put in place to eliminate individuality. One of these, mentioned in another piece by Rand, The Fountainhead, is the idea of Altruism, the doctrine which demands that man live for others and place others above oneself (Rand, The Fountainhead). This eventually leads to men [having] been taught dependence as a virtue (Rand, The Fountainhead). She further elaborates how society has implemented Altruism as an excuse to eliminate individuality rather than using it as a tool to genuinely help others. Since this concept is preached to everyone their whole life, they grow up only knowing altruism and don t know what individuality is or how they can express it. However, Equality begins to question the idea of helping others before himself and debates between doing his undesirable street sweeping job for the city or pursuing his quest for knowledge. Although he would much rather learn new material, he still feels obligated to carry out his role in the society. This proves how what he has been taught holds him back from achieving his goal, as Equality is initially confused on what to do and hesitates. Even though the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

From our very beginnings as a country when we scored what went down as one of the greatest deals in history, the Louisiana Purchase, and later what may be known as the worst deal ever, the Boston Red Sox trading Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees. • 32. Consciousness In The German Ideology Before one is able to consider this quote, the concept of materialism and consciousness must be dissected. According to Marx, materialism is not only the way people s beliefs are conditioned by material activities, but also the fact that people s ideologies are conditioned by history and the powers of production. Consciousness plays a large role in his definition of materialism, because they are inherently connected. For example, The production of ideas, of conceptions, of consciousness is directly interwoven with the material activity and the material relationships of men; it is the language of actual life (Marx, 111). Marx also defines consciousness as an economic process; in other words, economic determinism defines consciousness and even history itself. This differs greatly from Hegel s idea that consciousness is a process called the dialectic, which includes distinguishing between thesis and antithesis in order to come to a conclusion. Although Marx utilizes the dialectic to analyze materialism and consciousness in The German Ideology, he goes even further than Hegel and uses this dialectic thinking to challenge Hegel s own concepts. It is important to understand the concept that the process of thinking is actually a reflection of the external world through consciousness, because then one can connect the idea that it is more of a relationship than an externalized object.
