Chipotle vs Panera
Chipotle vs. Panera Bread Company
Introduction Fast Casual Restaurant fast casual restaurant is a type of restaurant that does not offer full
table service but promises a higher quality of food and atmosphere than a fast food restaurant. In the
USA it is a relatively new and growing concept to fill the space between fast food and casual dining.
The typical cost per meal is in the US$8 $15 range. Two emerging fast casual restaurants are Chipotle
Mexican Grill and Panera Bread.
When Chipotle opened its first store in 1993, the idea was simple: demonstrate that food served fast
didn t have to be a fast food experience (Chipotle.com, 2010). Chipotle uses high quality raw

Panera is proficient in making good, quality products. Their financial position is strong; and they are
known for quality products and great customer service. Panera is not trying to be the Wal Mart,
Starbucks or Microsoft. In a down economy, CEO Ron Shaich continues to target the 92% of
Americans who still have jobs.
Shaich is also taking advantage of the company s cash position and the slow real estate market by
bargaining down lease rates by 20% to 25% from 2008 levels. Plus, Panera can lock in these low
terms for the next 20 years (2009). Chipotle, on the other hand, seems to have created a sustainable
branding strategy that leverages its good food, humorous ads, distinctive interior design, and in store
world music (Wikinvest.com, 2010). The company is positioned to capitalize on their organic and
farm raised food, and high quality ingredients. According to the organic Trade Association (OTA),
organic food sales are growing at a 20% clip annually in the US, although such food only accounts for
3% of all food and beverage sales (Wikinvest.com, 2010). Chipotle is also positioned to tap multiple
markets: baby boomers who can afford to dine out, Hispanics, two income families who do not have
time to cook, and the socially conscious consumer.
Organizational Control Strategies Panera Bread offers franchising opportunities to facilitate its
expansion. The company has a highly selective process and requires franchisees to

The Importance Of The Chinese Garden Architecture
In the early 1636, the place where the Chinese kings live, the construction of the Chinese garden
architecture first started, when the Chinese emperor chose a city as the earth and the use of financial
resources in his hands. The King s builder s team started building the Yu palace garden building,
which has a beautiful grand mansion that provides the emperor with a place to live in. The Yu Garden
is primarily located in the Yellow River basin in South China, in the Beijing area. This is the product
of China s two thousand years of the feudal dynasty regularly change; and the development of China
has stopped developing for millennia. As a consequence, the government at that time stopped
communicating with other countries. For a significant number of years, China kept up maintained
social type of antiquated progress. In 1994, the Chinese imperial garden had been taken as the world s
social legacy rundown and was the value abundance of all humankind (Haritatou, 2012). This paper
will examine how the Chinese imperial gardens bring positive emotions, the dimension of Chinese
ancient designs, Chinese history, and the natural and human dimension.
Dimension of Chinese ancient design
The Yellow River is the cradle of the Chinese nation because of its superior geographical conditions,
which has traditionally been China s political, economic and cultural center. The Ancient Guang

Slavery Is The Key For Achieving Freedom
In today s society, we take many things for granted because they come easy to us. Education, in many
of our lives, is something that is dreaded, something that we do only because we have to. But 200
years ago, things were much different. Slavery unfortunately existed in our society, and slaves weren t
granted the gift of education. By not having an education, they were not able to completely understand
their situation, and therefore unable to get out of it. Slaves had a limited option in achieving freedom,
and in order to do so, they had to become educated, enough to be able to understand slavery, and they
had to be religious to be able to see through the hypocrisy of the religious slaveholders.
For slaves, education is the key to achieving freedom. It develops one s sense of curiosity, and allows
the mind to question things, and to develop it s own ideas and opinions. For slaves, the gift of
education was rare, but if one was lucky enough to have it, they began to see the true nature of slavery,
and it made them more likely to try and become free. When Frederick Douglass was a young boy, he
befriended a few white children who gave him a glimpse of what having an education is like. When
remembering this important time in his life, he says, With their kindly aid, at different times and
different places, I finally succeeded in learning to read (66 67). The young boys gave Douglass a
book, called the Columbian Orator, the first book he had ever laid hands on. This

Symbolism In The Rabbit-Proof Fence
Symbolism in The Rabbit proof Fence
The movie The Rabbit proof Fence , directed by Phillip Noyce, tells a story of family values through
Molly Craig s journey of 1500 miles on foot, travelling from Moore River back home, Jigalong, with
the rabbit proof fence as her only guidance. Throughout the movie, the rabbit proof fence becomes the
iconic symbol of the connection between Aboriginees and their home.
The Rabbit proof Fence sets in Perth, Australia in the 1930s, when the Australian government was still
heavily under the influence of racial discrimination. One of the prejudiced policies was allowing half
caste children to be taken away from their families and to be installed in a special ecclesiastical
school. Molly Craig, being the heroin of the movie, refuses to follow the injustice and runs away from
Moore River Native Settlement, along with two other half catse. On the escape back home, the rabbit
proof fence is her only ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From a bird s eye view, Noyce establishes the image of the fence among the wilderness landscape of
Western Australia. Being the only artificial object among nature, the rabbit proof fence becomes the
only connection from a place to another. By revealing the fence at the very beginning to the audience,
the director is able to emphasis its importance in symbolizing. Slowly, through the scene when the half
castes are talking to fencer, the rabbit proof fence shows to the audience the relationship of the fence
with the children s family. In a two shot with Gracie, Daisy the youngest half caste reveals the Molly
and her dad works on the rabbit proof fence. The fence symbolizes the only link between the children
and their fathers, even though the relationship is not as significant as the maternal bond. Noyce
portrays to the audience through the fence not only the girls family background but also
foreshadowing the importance of the rabbit proof fence later

I start driving, and decide to go to the Museum of Art. I absolutely adore museums, especially art
ones. One day, I would love to go to the Art Basel in Miami. 25 minutes later, I enter the Museum of
Modern Art. The building is humongous and busy. I walk into the first exhibition, and am already
amazed at the art. There are several paintings, and sculptures around the room. One painting catches
my eye. It s an extremely detailed painting of San Francisco. I think it caught my eye, because it
reminds me of the view from the hills of Twin Peaks. I head towards the next exhibition, which is just
filled with different types of paintings. I see paintings of people, buildings, indoors, and much more.
For some unknown reason, my all time favorite painting is Van Gogh s self portrait. I m not sure why I
like it so much, but I do. I also really love his painting called Starry Night . It gives me a calm,
positive vibe. I walk towards the café in the museum to grab a snack before I leave. Before I arrive to
the museum. I noticed Union Square about 10 minutes behind, so I decide to go there. I ve also seen
the Union Square in movies, but it looks much more extensive in person. I slowly walk around to
check out the busy stores, and restaurants. The stores here definitely look classier, and high end. The
Union Square is certainly my favorite destination in San Francisco today. After a little while of
walking around, I feel a little tired, so I walk back towards the car. I sit, and have a few minutes rest.
Where to now? I read the brochure once more, and see a stunning national park called Yosemite
National Park. It has a hotel too, which would be nice to sleep in, instead of my car. It is 3 hours and

Chapter 6 The Pls System Essay
In chapter 6 section 1 it talks about the creation of the PLS system. As a new nation was created there
had to be a system put in place in order to keep from arguments erupting over land, this system was
created by a committee led by Thomas Jefferson in 1784. This system although having some
weaknesses is still used today to divide land. There are two main systems used in the United States
these are the metes and bounds and the GLO system.
6.2 This section describes that no survey is final until all paperwork is completed and approved by the
government. If there is a problem found in a survey then the most recent survey should be used to
correct this problem. If the same problem is found in the most recent survey then the original survey
should be found and used to solve the issue.

depending on where you are. None of these methods are wrong and all work in their area.
6.6 In 1785 the area of Wisconsin Michigan Ohio Illinois and Indiana was surveyed into 36 lots. The
land divided like these are all states east of the Mississippi because the Louisiana Purchase was not
until 1804.
6.7 the act of 1796 was put in place in order to improve the act of 1785. There where no surveys taken
between 1788 and 1796 until the act was put in place. This act split townships into 1 mile by 1 mile
square tiles, with interior tiles being run every 2 miles.
6.8 Explains the 2 acts of 1800 although they are of little relevance today. The first was an act used to
divide townships into 5 mile tracts with markers every 2 and a half miles. The second describes the
payments for surveyors and also the first to authorize the splitting and selling of the lots split inside

WA9: Bad News Can Rebuild Brazil The fight against corruption is a considerable issue that has been
dominating all the news and informal conversations in Brazil for the last two years. The country is
again in the midst of a whirlwind of public scandals. In Brazil, it is very common to associate
corruption with politicians. This happens because almost every day newspapers and television present
complaints about the abuse of public resources and funds for a personal favor. Jose Ugaz, Chair of
Transparency International asserts In too many countries, people are deprived of their most basic

In fact, perhaps the first people to be corrupted in this country were exactly the natives because the
Portuguese bribed them to obtain Brazilian treasures. Nonetheless, it is a hypocrisy to say that just
police or politicians are corrupt in Brazil. A corrupted society, who gives a jeitinho brasileiro , which
is a wrong way to solve problems, is the society who votes in corrupted politicians, who feeds the
corruption in Brazilian system. Corruption has also become more intense with the advent of
capitalism, and today the illicit enrichment of authorities is one of the main causes of the social
problems that Brazil faces. When government and authorities do not care about the society needs, they
promote the growth of poverty in the country. According to O Connell Brazil has greater social

Muscular Dystrophy Paper
Muscular dystrophy is a group pf chronic diseases that is caused by degeneration of skeletal muscles
over time. It is caused by a mutated gene can affect people of all ages (Prince, 2012). It has different
types which are Duchenne, Becker, limb girdle, congenital, facioscapulohumeral, myotonic,
oculopharyngeal, distal, and Emery Dreifuss dystrophies. This paper will focus on Duchene Musclar
Dystrophy (DMD) which is the most common form of muscular dystrophy. The purpose of this paper
is to show how respiration is affected by Duchene muscular dystrophy and how it can be treated.
Pathophysiology
Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is caused by a mutated gene in the X chromosome. This flawed
genes is passed on by the mother. However, most carrier of the gene do not show signs or symptoms
of the disease. The The flawed gene causes the improper production of the protein dystrophin which is
accompanied by defective dystrophin glycoprotein complex (DGC) in the sarcolemma and leads to
progressive muscle degeneration (Nakamura Takeda, 2011). The Dystrophin protein is vital in
providing a muscle integrity. Therefore, the absence of dystrophin production can lead to muscled
atrophy.
Signs and Symptoms ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Children who have DMD have mobility problems and are usually wheel chair dependent between ages
4 to 10. Overtime, the loss of dystrophy can lead to cardiomyopathy due the degeneration of the heart
muscle. Muscles on the lungs and diaphragm can also weaken which can lead to poor respiratory
health. This can lead to shallow and labored breathing and a build up of mucus and bacteria. As a
result, children with DMD are prone to severe chest infections (Pearce, 2012). The decrease of oxygen
in the blood can affect sleep and can lead to difficulty in concentrating and staying

World War II Submarine Warfare and the United States Essay
In the thirty eight years of the United States Naval Submarine Service no United States submarine had
ever sunk an enemy vessel. With the ignition of the Second World War the poorly equipped and poorly
trained Silent Service, nicknamed for the limited access of the media to the actions and achievements
of the submarines, would be thrust into the position American submariners had longed for. The attack
on Pearl Harbor left the United States Navy with few options for retribution. The three remaining

They were plagued by design flaws; the subs vibrated excessively creating a dangerous amount of

United States at the beginning of the war. Japan s submarines were not only slightly faster and larger,
they were also better outfitted with exceptional optical gear and look outs, excellent torpedoes, and
adequate underwater listening gear. They did not, however, have radar. American skipper, Tyrrell

Mark 14 torpedo was disastrously flawed. The Mark 14 was believed to be, by everyone except the
sailors who used them, the greatest torpedo of its time. Unfortunately, this was not true. The torpedo s

found to run deeper, in most cases more than ten feet, than its intended depth, fail to detonate, or to
detonate too early. In the early years of the war there were also crippling torpedo shortages. The subs
also had insufficient engines. The HOR engine s gear wheel teeth constantly broke causing vibrations
that would knock out the motor. At this point in history America had little experience in submarine
warfare. This left the submariners insufficiently trained and

Health Care Delivery Systems: Staffing and Delegation
Watching a medical show like, Gray s Anatomy, the population get a dramatic and believable glimpse

nervous, scared, and acutely ill members of society. The OR requires dedicated staffing and scope of
service practices for care of these fragile patients trusting the staff to care for them during the
operation. The author of this paper will explore the scope of service for all OR s and determine
staffing models necessary for safety of patients and employees alike. Many individuals see the OR as
highly expensive area within the hospital due to equipment needs, instruments, supplies, suture,
dressings, and everything in between; but, what does a typical day cost the hospital to staff and
maintain the OR? How do long hours affect workplace and patient safety? The author will provide
knowledge of staffing costs for an OR. Nursing in the OR takes a village of healthcare professionals

there is no reason for them to want to be a different person. Further, everyone is who they are meant to

upon by someone else, even if they do not realize it. People affect other people s lives in ways they
cannot comprehend, and if a person wants to be someone else, then they are taking away from all of
the lives that they have previously touched in the past. A person may want to be someone else because
they seem to have a better life than the one that they have, however, they could have problems or
difficulties that are unseen by everyone else. No one s life is perfect. Everyone faces challenges, and
everyone has rewards. Some challenges may seem harder than others and some rewards may seem
better than others, but that is based purely upon an outsider s perspective. Different people value
different things in life and, as a result, will view things with possibly inverse perspectives. So
something may seem to be excellent to one person but terrible to another. Also, some things may have

Theories Of General Strain Theory
Strain and Deviance: An Empirical Research of General Strain Theory in a Philippine Public
University
LITERATURE REVIEW
Theoretical background
During the past decades, various Criminologists developed different theories in an attempt to explain
the causes of crime within the society. In return, they were successful, which are adopted and accepted
today. Indeed, all of the theories explain the root causes of crime. One of these theories is anomie or
strain theory, which attempts to explain why the majority of the people who commits crime belong to
the lower class. It argues that the frustration of the people who belong to the lower class causes crime
towards the higher class (Merton, 1938). In 1985, Robert Agnew got interested on studying the theory

GST defines strains as negative life events and conditions, which are commonly disliked by the people
who experienced it or the negative experiences of a person in a given group (Agnew, 1992; 2001;

The objective strain refers to those negative life events and conditions experienced by an individual
that are rejected by most members of people in a given group (Agnew, 2001). Usually, these
individuals could not achieve their goals or they lack the means of achieving them. They usually
suffer from poverty (e.g., lack of adequate food and shelter), unemployment (e.g. unable to find a
good work), and discrimination regardless of gender, race or ethnicity. On the other hand, subjective
strain refers to those negative life events experienced by individuals or experiences rejected by them

herself in something, it is something that they like or enjoy. In Bartleby s case this is what he does, not
because he enjoys it but because it s all he has. This is evident when the lawyer says, He ran a day and
night line, copying by sun light and by candle light. (108) This job is all he had in his life.
Another case in which Bartleby shares similarities to that of a zombie is when he repeats throughout
the story, I prefer not to. No one would ever say these words to his or her boss. That would be crazy,
but Bartleby said these words multiple times to the lawyer, his boss. This is similar to the
characteristics of a zombie, because zombies do not ever listen to anyone. They do what they want to
do and nothing more.
Bartleby took the job as a scrivener to try and find a purpose for his life, but soon after his boss
abandons him, he ends up in jail. At this moment in his life he sees that he truly has nothing. His quest
for purpose as a scrivener has failed. He is at the end of his life, not because he is old or sick
physically, but because he has nothing to live for. While in jail he refuses to eat and soon he dies. His
reason for living died a long time ago, though. His pursuit to be a scrivener was

Argumentative Essay On Conscription In Australia
The Great War was known as the war to end all wars as it had such a dramatic and tragic impact on
soldiers and civilians alike. Many aspects of the conscription debate, the home front, trench warfare
and weaponry had a significant impact on Australia and its involvement in the war.
In conclusion, there were many changes that occurred to soldiers and civilians as a result of the Great
War. The aspects of trench warfare and weaponry, women on the home front and conscription played a
significant role in changing soldiers and civilians throughout the war.
Nothing was more divisive than the conscription debate in Australia during the First World War. The
highly debated issue of conscription compulsory enlistment for military service, particularly overseas
had a significant effect on Australian society.
Unlike other countries fighting in the war, Australia did not enforce conscription. Its armed forces
relied completely on volunteers and at first there had been more volunteers than the army could
accept. However by mid 1916, when news of casualties of the front began to reach home, support for
the war declined sharply. In 1916, William Morris Hughes returned from inspecting the Western Front
and was convinced that Australia should introduce conscription for the war effort. This led society to
become divided into two major groups, the pro conscriptionists and anti conscriptionists.
Those who argued in favour of conscription included a number of powerful and influential

Petruchio Never Tames Her Analysis
Petruchio never really tames Katharine. I believe that Katharine tames herself because no human quite
tames another. When teachers teach they don t show superiority nor do the use punishment to force
people to learn. Teachers give encouragement and evidence, along with patience for a student to grasp
what s being thrown at them. How is a person to know they are wrong, or be punished for not learning
something when there really was no prior evidence for them to reflect on. Sure Katharine was a jerk
and showed much disrespect but she didn t know it put people off nor did she understand all the
negatives she was putting out, which was thwarting every attempt at friendship ever presented to her.

Essay about Racism and Discrimination in Healthcare
Healthcare systems are microcosms of the larger society in which they exist. Where there is structural
violence or cultural violence in the larger society, so will there be evidence of systematic inequities in
the institutions of these societies. The healthcare system in Australia is one example from a plethora of
similarly situated healthcare systems in which the color of a patient s skin or the race of his parents
may determine the quality of medical received. Life expectancy and infant mortality rates are vastly
different for non Aboriginal, Aboriginal, and Torres Strait Islanders residing in Australia. The life
expectancy of Aboriginal men is 21 years shorter than for non Aboriginal men in Australia. For
women, the difference is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The organizational structures of political and economic systems cause and sustain the sort of
hierarchical relations that enable dramatic differences between and across sectors of societies. Within
these hierarchies, the people at the top have privilege, wealth, and power, while those at the bottom of
the hierarchy are dominated, oppressed, and exploited (Christie, 1997). People are harmed and killed
as a result of structural violence but, unlike direct violence, it occurs more slowly. The harm or death
of oppressed people may come about because some people are deprived of food, shelter, healthcare,
and other resources (Christie, 1997). Because structural violence is embedded in a society s way of
being, over the long term, groups of people may not be able to meet their basic needs to the degree
that normal development and growth is impacted.
In the 1960s, Johan Galtung posited the construct of violence as a phenomenon generated by the
existence of social barriers that deny needs satisfaction in certain sectors of society. Galtung s
conceptual framework illustrates the relationship between the structure of society and the inequalities
experienced by its citizens. Gilman s seminal definition of structural violence reads, physical and
psychological harm that results from exploitive and unjust social, political, and economic systems
(1983, p. 8).

The Fire Of Free Thinking
By adding to old ideas and infusing our own thinking we have created a new young American culture.
Everyone generation does, so while we are not unique in the creation, ours is somewhat different than
our recent counterparts. It is fairly difficult to describe, but with our situation and thought process has
led to a rise in individualistic thinking. The fire of free thinking has been intensely fanned by social
media that has driven its movement to become much larger than it may have been otherwise. These
ideas have mixed with most of the classic American beliefs to give us the environment that we have
now.
Our individualism is spearheaded by our new bravery and willingness to be different. Years ago much
of the emphasis was placed on fitting in the social structure comfortably and being similar to your
peers. In our time it isn t looked down on to be different and in many ways it is almost encouraged. It
is now thought that you don t want to be the same as the people around you in all ways and this
rational has helped to create more independent young people.
This is a positive thing in many ways, most notably being the growth in free thinking. We are now
comfortable developing our own thoughts and perception. We don t as easily accept others thoughts
without thinking them through first by ourselves. This creates more young people who will end up
being critical and deep thinkers in the future and these are the people that have a real opportunity to
change the world. We must

Ducati Q) How did Ducati become a profitable motorcycle maker despite its small scale? Before its
takeover by the American private equity firm Texas Pacific Group (TPG), Ducati went from being one
of the top manufacturers of the high performance sport motorcycle industry to being on the verge of
bankruptcy. TPG identified Ducati as a high end product with enormous potential for growth but
realized that serious change was required if Ducati was to ever fulfill this potential. TPG decided to

Ducati had managed to successfully establish itself as a producer of high quality, reliable and stylish
motorcycles. They did this through an aggressive outsourcing policy, using strict supplier criteria,
using the platform approach to production and by leveraging the advantages of being located in the
highly sophisticated Emilian mechanical district. Ducati outsourced around 87% of their production,
which was the highest in the industry. By outsourcing to highly specialized components producers in
the Emilian district Ducati could focus on the key value adders such as design, R D, the production of
strategic parts and quality control. Ducati was very selective and placed great emphasis on the quality
of its suppliers, so its number of suppliers decreased from 200 to 130. It typically identified at least 2
suppliers for each component and signed only short term contracts with them. This provided Ducati
with a pool of highly competitive and dedicated suppliers. A big factor in the efficiency of the
production process was the platform approach to production. Ducati would divide motorcycles into a
small number of large components which would consist of smaller subcomponents. A key supplier
would then be made responsible for a component and managing the suppliers for the respective
subcomponents. Heavy investment in R D was made and an internal design division

The Similarities Between Bollywood And Silent Movies
Bollywood and Silent movies are distinct by their names and styles within each movie. They are
known to be the most popular back in the old days. Bollywood was, and is famous in India, whereas
Silent movies were once a huge boom in Hollywood. Each movie s music play a significant role, or
portray an important theme for the viewers. These two genres of movie have similarities, as well as
differences that make them somehow dissimilar but somehow close to each other. Bollywood, an
unauthorized name of the Hindi Film Industry in Mumbai. Some people interpret this name as the
whole Indian Cinema, and although the fact that it is the biggest in India, it is only a section of the
entire movie Industry. The industry had originated from a movie called Raja Harishchandra, with the
unprecedented silent traits, in 1913. After that, the industry had grown so massively in 20 years that it
produced more than 200 films annually. The first sound movie was created in 1931, with the first
colored movie in the 1950s. Bollywood movies set their central point on music ... Show more content

trombone, violin, cello, and trumpets are utilized whereas the Bollywood manipulates shehnai, tabla,
sarangi and zither. This is mainly due to the difference in the countries. Another difference between
two is the dynamics. For the Bollywood, the music is on Forte everytime, loud and strong with the

talking. After he finishes his funny sentence, the music suddenly becomes lurid. When talking, only

At the Time of the Louisville Flood Essay
The image I have chosen is one by Margaret Bourke White, titled At the Time of the Louisville Flood .
Margaret Bourke White was born on June 14, 1904. She first gained recognition as an industrial
photographer based in Cleveland, Ohio and worked for the magazine company known as Fortune. She
then became one of the founding member for the magazine LIFE, having shot the very first cover of
their magazine. Margaret s name became world famous for her amazing photographs, even more
impressive to have accomplished this at a time when is was a man s world.

Furthermore, this photograph is more powerful in black and white rather than in color because the
contrast between the main subjects is more obvious. It is taken from an ordinary perspective and angle
which draws the viewers in easily. The picture is therefore divided into two parts supplement to each
other from this point of view.
This is an effective and influential piece due to the issue brought up by the irony. Through her
photograph, Margaret Bourke White successfully depicted the living standard of African Americans in
reality back in the 1930 s compared to the so called American dream. This is one of my favorite
photographs because of the truthfulness it represents. This image not only brings the suffering of the
flood victims to the viewers but also demonstrates the mock made by the billboard toward the victims.
If this photograph is presented without any descriptions and title, it would make little sense to the
spectators. Without showing the very front of the bread line, it would be hard for viewers to know who

African Americans and The Reconstruction Period
The Reconstruction Period I think is a problem for the African Americans back then. They were
treated unfairly during this period, when it was to being them a new started and hope of change. Don t
get me wrong there were some people who were for them to e happy, but not many. So, let start at the
being; where it all happened. In January of 1865, Union General William T. Sherman issued a special
field order Number 15, which temporary granted each freed family 40 acres of land off the region of
Georgia in the islands and coastal area. Also the Union Army donated mules to them after the war was
over. In the summer of 1865 when President Andrew Johnson was in office, his first act of
Reconstruction was to give back all the federal control land back to its previous owner. When the land
was giving back to the owners, freed men and women could sign a labor contracts with the planters or
they could leave the land they occupied this was called Freedman s Bureau. Soon after when the land
was giving back, the former Confederate state stated Black Codes . Black Codes would deny African
Americans to legal have equality and political rights. Also it would require then to sign yearly labor
contracts with the planters. When this happen, Congress made the Reconstruction Act in the 1867,
when the 14th (June 13, 1866) and the 15th (February 26, 1869, ratified on February 3, 1870)

Marriage as Slavery in Middlemarch Essay example
Marriage as Slavery in Middlemarch
One of George Eliot s challenges in Middlemarch is to depict a sexually desirous woman, Dorothea,
within the confines of Victorian literary propriety. The critic, Abigail Rischin, identifies the moment
that Dorothea s future husband, Ladislaw, and his painter friend see her alongside an ancient, partially
nude statue of the mythic heroine, Ariadne, in a museum in Rome as the key to Eliot s sexualization of
this character. Ariadne is, in the sculpture, between her two lovers. Theseus, whom she helped to
escape from her father s labyrinth in Crete has already left her, while the jubilant God, Bacchus, her
next lover, has yet to arrive. By invoking the silent visual rhetoric of ancient ... Show more content on

Unable to fully explain something by itself, Eliot takes advantage of literary devices to displace the
content and coat it so that her reader may swallow the meaning.
Sir Thomas Browne s definition of satire, which Eliot includes at the begining of chapter 45, further
admits Eliot s awareness of the displacing (as Miller says) literary tact she employs in describing ideas
that her reader will not otherwise be comfortable with, like her sexual female character or her complex
theory on perspective. Without the borrowed help and satire of times past; goes the quotation from
Browne, condemning the vices of their own times [passed times], by the expressions of vices in times
which they commend [present times]... [Satirists] cannot but argue the community of vice in both
(422). A bit earlier, Eliot puts the definition more subtely in the words of Mr. Brooke, Dorothea s
father, Satire, you know, he states, should be true up to a certain point (369). Middlemarch itself is
written in the context of having taken place about 40 years prior (1832) to the point in time that the
narrator herself occupies (1871). Likely, Eliot frames her criticisms of the town of Middlemarch such
that they reflect on the then current state of things in England.

Chipotle vs Panera Chipotle vs. Panera Bread Company Introduction Fast Casual Restaurant fast casual restaurant is a type of restaurant that does not offer full table service but promises a higher quality of food and atmosphere than a fast food restaurant. In the USA it is a relatively new and growing concept to fill the space between fast food and casual dining. The typical cost per meal is in the US$8 $15 range. Two emerging fast casual restaurants are Chipotle Mexican Grill and Panera Bread. When Chipotle opened its first store in 1993, the idea was simple: demonstrate that food served fast didn t have to be a fast food experience (Chipotle.com, 2010). Their financial position is strong; and they are known for quality products and great customer service. Panera is not trying to be the Wal Mart, Starbucks or Microsoft. In a down economy, CEO Ron Shaich continues to target the 92% of Americans who still have jobs. Shaich is also taking advantage of the company s cash position and the slow real estate market by bargaining down lease rates by 20% to 25% from 2008 levels. Plus, Panera can lock in these low terms for the next 20 years (2009). Chipotle, on the other hand, seems to have created a sustainable branding strategy that leverages its good food, humorous ads, distinctive interior design, and in store world music (Wikinvest.com, 2010). The company is positioned to capitalize on their organic and farm raised food, and high quality ingredients. According to the organic Trade Association (OTA), organic food sales are growing at a 20% clip annually in the US, although such food only accounts for 3% of all food and beverage sales (Wikinvest.com, 2010). Chipotle is also positioned to tap multiple markets: baby boomers who can afford to dine out, Hispanics, two income families who do not have time to cook, and the socially conscious consumer. Education, in many of our lives, is something that is dreaded, something that we do only because we have to. But 200 years ago, things were much different. Slavery unfortunately existed in our society, and slaves weren t granted the gift of education. By not having an education, they were not able to completely understand their situation, and therefore unable to get out of it. Slaves had a limited option in achieving freedom, and in order to do so, they had to become educated, enough to be able to understand slavery, and they had to be religious to be able to see through the hypocrisy of the religious slaveholders. For slaves, education is the key to achieving freedom. It develops one s sense of curiosity, and allows the mind to question things, and to develop it s own ideas and opinions. For slaves, the gift of education was rare, but if one was lucky enough to have it, they began to see the true nature of slavery, and it made them more likely to try and become free. When Frederick Douglass was a young boy, he befriended a few white children who gave him a glimpse of what having an education is like. When remembering this important time in his life, he says, With their kindly aid, at different times and different places, I finally succeeded in learning to read (66 67). The young boys gave Douglass a book, called the Columbian Orator, the first book he had ever laid hands on. This ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Rabbit proof Fence sets in Perth, Australia in the 1930s, when the Australian government was still heavily under the influence of racial discrimination. One of the prejudiced policies was allowing half caste children to be taken away from their families and to be installed in a special ecclesiastical school. Molly Craig, being the heroin of the movie, refuses to follow the injustice and runs away from Moore River Native Settlement, along with two other half catse. From a bird s eye view, Noyce establishes the image of the fence among the wilderness landscape of Western Australia. Slowly, through the scene when the half castes are talking to fencer, the rabbit proof fence shows to the audience the relationship of the fence with the children s family. In a two shot with Gracie, Daisy the youngest half caste reveals the Molly and her dad works on the rabbit proof fence. It s an extremely detailed painting of San Francisco. I think it caught my eye, because it reminds me of the view from the hills of Twin Peaks. I head towards the next exhibition, which is just filled with different types of paintings. I see paintings of people, buildings, indoors, and much more. For some unknown reason, my all time favorite painting is Van Gogh s self portrait. I m not sure why I like it so much, but I do. I also really love his painting called Starry Night . Many aspects of the conscription debate, the home front, trench warfare and weaponry had a significant impact on Australia and its involvement in the war. In conclusion, there were many changes that occurred to soldiers and civilians as a result of the Great War. The aspects of trench warfare and weaponry, women on the home front and conscription played a significant role in changing soldiers and civilians throughout the war. Nothing was more divisive than the conscription debate in Australia during the First World War. The highly debated issue of conscription compulsory enlistment for military service, particularly overseas had a significant effect on Australian society. Unlike other countries fighting in the war, Australia did not enforce conscription. Its armed forces relied completely on volunteers and at first there had been more volunteers than the army could accept. However by mid 1916, when news of casualties of the front began to reach home, support for the war declined sharply. In 1916, William Morris Hughes returned from inspecting the Western Front and was convinced that Australia should introduce conscription for the war effort. The organizational structures of political and economic systems cause and sustain the sort of hierarchical relations that enable dramatic differences between and across sectors of societies. Within these hierarchies, the people at the top have privilege, wealth, and power, while those at the bottom of the hierarchy are dominated, oppressed, and exploited (Christie, 1997). People are harmed and killed as a result of structural violence but, unlike direct violence, it occurs more slowly. The harm or death of oppressed people may come about because some people are deprived of food, shelter, healthcare, and other resources (Christie, 1997). Because structural violence is embedded in a society s way of being, over the long term, groups of people may not be able to meet their basic needs to the degree that normal development and growth is impacted. In the 1960s, Johan Galtung posited the construct of violence as a phenomenon generated by the existence of social barriers that deny needs satisfaction in certain sectors of society. Galtung s conceptual framework illustrates the relationship between the structure of society and the inequalities experienced by its citizens. It is fairly difficult to describe, but with our situation and thought process has led to a rise in individualistic thinking. The fire of free thinking has been intensely fanned by social media that has driven its movement to become much larger than it may have been otherwise. These ideas have mixed with most of the classic American beliefs to give us the environment that we have now. Our individualism is spearheaded by our new bravery and willingness to be different. Years ago much of the emphasis was placed on fitting in the social structure comfortably and being similar to your peers. In our time it isn t looked down on to be different and in many ways it is almost encouraged. It is now thought that you don t want to be the same as the people around you in all ways and this rational has helped to create more independent young people. This is a positive thing in many ways, most notably being the growth in free thinking. We are now comfortable developing our own thoughts and perception. We don t as easily accept others thoughts without thinking them through first by ourselves. This creates more young people who will end up being critical and deep thinkers in the future and these are the people that have a real opportunity to change the world. We must ... • 26. Ducati Ducati Q) How did Ducati become a profitable motorcycle maker despite its small scale? Before its takeover by the American private equity firm Texas Pacific Group (TPG), Ducati went from being one of the top manufacturers of the high performance sport motorcycle industry to being on the verge of bankruptcy. TPG identified Ducati as a high end product with enormous potential for growth but realized that serious change was required if Ducati was to ever fulfill this potential. TPG decided to appoint Federico Minoli, an expert in turnaround management as the CEO of Ducati. When Minoli arrived he saw that the company had no distinct overriding strategy, there was no management structure and no set goals to guide the direction the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ducati had managed to successfully establish itself as a producer of high quality, reliable and stylish motorcycles. They did this through an aggressive outsourcing policy, using strict supplier criteria, using the platform approach to production and by leveraging the advantages of being located in the highly sophisticated Emilian mechanical district. Ducati outsourced around 87% of their production, which was the highest in the industry. By outsourcing to highly specialized components producers in the Emilian district Ducati could focus on the key value adders such as design, R D, the production of strategic parts and quality control. Ducati was very selective and placed great emphasis on the quality of its suppliers, so its number of suppliers decreased from 200 to 130. It typically identified at least 2 suppliers for each component and signed only short term contracts with them. This provided Ducati with a pool of highly competitive and dedicated suppliers. A big factor in the efficiency of the production process was the platform approach to production. Ducati would divide motorcycles into a small number of large components which would consist of smaller subcomponents. A key supplier would then be made responsible for a component and managing the suppliers for the respective subcomponents. Heavy investment in R D was made and an internal design division ... • 27. The Similarities Between Bollywood And Silent Movies Bollywood and Silent movies are distinct by their names and styles within each movie. They are known to be the most popular back in the old days. Bollywood was, and is famous in India, whereas Silent movies were once a huge boom in Hollywood. Each movie s music play a significant role, or portray an important theme for the viewers. These two genres of movie have similarities, as well as differences that make them somehow dissimilar but somehow close to each other. Bollywood, an unauthorized name of the Hindi Film Industry in Mumbai. Some people interpret this name as the whole Indian Cinema, and although the fact that it is the biggest in India, it is only a section of the entire movie Industry. The industry had originated from a movie called Raja Harishchandra, with the unprecedented silent traits, in 1913. After that, the industry had grown so massively in 20 years that it produced more than 200 films annually. The first sound movie was created in 1931, with the first colored movie in the 1950s. One major difference is that in non sense song, only Charlie Chaplin sings, whereas in zindagi hai khel, woman and man sings alternately. For most of the part, the woman repeats what the man had said. There is a huge difference between the instruments used in each of them. In the movie, trombone, violin, cello, and trumpets are utilized whereas the Bollywood manipulates shehnai, tabla, sarangi and zither. This is mainly due to the difference in the countries. Another difference between two is the dynamics. For the Bollywood, the music is on Forte everytime, loud and strong with the tabla and shehnai, but for non sense song, the music only gets loud when Charlie Chaplin is not talking. After he finishes his funny sentence, the music suddenly becomes lurid. When talking, only the violins and cellos are used in a soft ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Margaret Bourke White was born on June 14, 1904. She first gained recognition as an industrial photographer based in Cleveland, Ohio and worked for the magazine company known as Fortune. She then became one of the founding member for the magazine LIFE, having shot the very first cover of their magazine. Margaret s name became world famous for her amazing photographs, even more impressive to have accomplished this at a time when is was a man s world. This is an effective and influential piece due to the issue brought up by the irony. Through her photograph, Margaret Bourke White successfully depicted the living standard of African Americans in reality back in the 1930 s compared to the so called American dream. This is one of my favorite photographs because of the truthfulness it represents. This image not only brings the suffering of the flood victims to the viewers but also demonstrates the mock made by the billboard toward the victims. If this photograph is presented without any descriptions and title, it would make little sense to the spectators. Without showing the very front of the bread line, it would be hard for viewers to know who are the people ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 30. African Americans and The Reconstruction Period The Reconstruction Period I think is a problem for the African Americans back then. They were treated unfairly during this period, when it was to being them a new started and hope of change. Don t get me wrong there were some people who were for them to e happy, but not many. So, let start at the being; where it all happened. In January of 1865, Union General William T. Sherman issued a special field order Number 15, which temporary granted each freed family 40 acres of land off the region of Georgia in the islands and coastal area. Also the Union Army donated mules to them after the war was over. In the summer of 1865 when President Andrew Johnson was in office, his first act of Reconstruction was to give back all the federal control land back to its previous owner. When the land was giving back to the owners, freed men and women could sign a labor contracts with the planters or they could leave the land they occupied this was called Freedman s Bureau. Soon after when the land was giving back, the former Confederate state stated Black Codes . Black Codes would deny African Americans to legal have equality and political rights. Also it would require then to sign yearly labor contracts with the planters. When this happen, Congress made the Reconstruction Act in the 1867, when the 14th (June 13, 1866) and the 15th (February 26, 1869, ratified on February 3, 1870) Amendments. • 32. Marriage as Slavery in Middlemarch Essay example Marriage as Slavery in Middlemarch One of George Eliot s challenges in Middlemarch is to depict a sexually desirous woman, Dorothea, within the confines of Victorian literary propriety. The critic, Abigail Rischin, identifies the moment that Dorothea s future husband, Ladislaw, and his painter friend see her alongside an ancient, partially nude statue of the mythic heroine, Ariadne, in a museum in Rome as the key to Eliot s sexualization of this character. Ariadne is, in the sculpture, between her two lovers. Theseus, whom she helped to escape from her father s labyrinth in Crete has already left her, while the jubilant God, Bacchus, her next lover, has yet to arrive. Unable to fully explain something by itself, Eliot takes advantage of literary devices to displace the content and coat it so that her reader may swallow the meaning. Sir Thomas Browne s definition of satire, which Eliot includes at the begining of chapter 45, further admits Eliot s awareness of the displacing (as Miller says) literary tact she employs in describing ideas that her reader will not otherwise be comfortable with, like her sexual female character or her complex theory on perspective. Without the borrowed help and satire of times past; goes the quotation from Browne, condemning the vices of their own times [passed times], by the expressions of vices in times which they commend [present times]... [Satirists] cannot but argue the community of vice in both (422). A bit earlier, Eliot puts the definition more subtely in the words of Mr. Brooke, Dorothea s father, Satire, you know, he states, should be true up to a certain point (369). Middlemarch itself is written in the context of having taken place about 40 years prior (1832) to the point in time that the narrator herself occupies (1871). Likely, Eliot frames her criticisms of the town of Middlemarch such that they reflect on the then current state of things in England. An instance of Eliot s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Robber Bridegroom Analysis These inconsistencies and contradictions has not only broken the belief that non fiction meant true (Atwood, In Search 1513), problematizing the absolute authority and authenticity of historical materials, and therefore the primitivity and purity of the authoritative discourse achieved by these official materials, but also left Atwood a gap to fill in the light of her own need to empower the other being in the marginal and invisible position of the power relationship to speak.
