U.S states to 21 years. As a result, it is believed that the mortality rates due to road accidents reduced
from 5,000 in the 80 s to 2, 000 in 2005 (Dean Mooney). However, the issue of binge drinking
remains unsolved with learning institutions having to deal with it every semester. In response to this,
134 college presidents formed the Amethyst Initiative, which is, a proposal allowing persons aged
between 18 and 20 to consume alcoholic drinks Conversely, the Mothers against Drunk Driving
(MADD), which pushed for the enactment of the law in 1984 believes that the Amethyst Initiative is
misplaced. The push for a lower drinking age is a battle between the parental community and the
student fraternity. For the drinking age too be lowered the Amethyst Initiative must compile concrete
research and facts to support its findings. Nonetheless, historical data shows that increase in the
minimum legal drinking age results in a decrease in the amount of deaths. As argued by Barry,

Dpughnuts Are Good for You
One of the most beloved foods in the United States is the doughnut or as it is popularly spelled, donut.
Who invented the doughnut? Where did it come from? What is it made of? Why is it called a donut or
doughnut? Why do I care?
Why? Because my beloved hubbuddy, frogdropping, challenged me to write about the history of the
doughnut. So here is what I have learned from copious, painstaking research.

The Structural Strain Theory Has Occurred
When socially accepted goals cannot be reached through legitimate means, the structural strain theory
has occurred. A mismatch that occurs between legitimate means and socially promoted goals has a
typology of responses in the strain theory. Merton s typology extends the functionalist perspective. He
believed that larger deviancy rates were because of social conditions and the varying responses. One
of the responses to social strain that accepts legitimate means of pursuing socially promoted goals is
conformity. Another response to social strain is ritualism. People reject or give up the socially
approved goal, but continue pursuing other goals through the same legitimate means (MindEdge,

I was proud to show off to all three of my daughters, that at any age, you can go back to school and do
something you love. My first certificate was in Dental Assisting. I hated the job after I finished. I felt
like I had wasted over a year of my life and money for something I did not like anymore.
College is time consuming. You must make time out for your class study and homework time. I was
always told if you work hard and get good grades in school that you will get into a good college. I was
also told that getting good grades in college, will get you the degree you are seeking and you should
be able to get a job anywhere you want. Even if you graduate summa cum laude, you might not be
guaranteed a job. If you stay focused on what you want out of your own education and take advantage
of any help offered, you may end up working in a field that you will stay in forever.
The number one way to reach your college degree goal is by going to college for classes when they
are scheduled. If you are not there, you cannot learn anything. I have mostly followed the
institutionalized approach of achieving my goal and I have more of a conformist response. I followed
my schedules down to the T. Making sure to do the best I could in each class. I tried to never miss a
class or most assignments. I did become a little bit of a Ritualist when I hated my first certificate from

Mr Harvey The Lovely Bones
Chilling through and through, The Lovely Bones, by Alice Sebold, is a tale of both murder and
growth, and, more so, the latter after the former. Introduced, quite bluntly, within the very first two
lines of the novel, readers meet the narrator, Salmon, like the fish; first name, Susie. . . murdered [at
age 14] on December 6, 1973 (1). Susie, brutally raped and killed by a foul, twisted serial killer by the
name of Mr. Harvey, is now giving the audience an eerie, psychologically thrilling recountal on the
lives of those she once knew who continue to live. In a fascinating twist, Sebold has Susie go into
detailed aspects of Mr. Harvey s life, past, and the nature of his corruption. Although humans are not
inherently or entirely benevolent or malevolent creatures from birth, one can see how the nurture of a
human directly influences their qualities as seen through Mr. Harvey s characterization and
development.
Before meeting Mr. Harvey, Susie enlightens the audience with a few facts about the murderer. For
instance, that her mother liked his border flowers , and that he believed in old fashioned things like
eggshells and coffee grounds, which he said his own mother had used (6). For the lead in of a
character who has repeatedly committed the most heinous of crimes, he is depicted, oddly enough,
with some aspects of humanity. Later on in the novel, dredging up old memories, Susie observes and
conveys the traumatizing childhood of Mr. Harvey. Doing so, Sebold, in an attempt

In August 1942, Hitler s massive Sixth Army marched to the city that was named after Stalin. During
the five month siege, the Russians fought to hold the city and were determined to hold it at any cost.
The book Stalingrad shows the roles of soldiers on both the Russian and German side, as well as
fighting in inhuman conditions, and some of the experiences from civilians who were trapped in the
battlefield. Antony Beevor interviewed some of the survivors and discovered new untold stories and
facts in a wide range of German and Soviet archives. Some of these included prisoner interrogations

The animal protection movement of the nineteenth century was based on the concept of animal
welfare; that is, the moral obligations required by human society. Such morals stem from natural
theology, specifically, the Book of Nature, which proposes that humans, the superior beings, should
hold dominion over animals, but have mercy, care, and stewardship toward them. From these ideas,
the animal protection movement was formed with two responsibilities in mind: first, to address
traditional moral concerns, such that an individual pledges to do no harm to animals; and second, to

Language is important to the way we communicate. Semantic memory is acquired over the years and
is vital to language. Language becomes second nature when we already know what, when and how to
say something. We form sentences, phrases, paragraphs by planning what we say and how we will say
it. Most people believe that when we speak, it is without thought and is done unconsciously. However,
in this paper I will seek to explain the relationship between semantic memory and language

For every action, there is a reason for it. We have to appreciate our cognitive processes and continuing
to understand how they work and what goes into making them work is so rewarding.
Analyze the basic functions of language
Pinker (1994c) esteems language as the jewel in the crown of cognition. Language serves the purpose
of communicating or revealing our cognitive processes. The beautiful thing about language is that it is
one of most complex and valuable aspect of cognition (Robinson Riegler amp; Robinson Riegler,
2008). Babies are able to learn language and sometime understand the language before they can speak
it. There are different types of languages: sign language, English, Spanish, Dutch, French, Braille. All
of these are ways that people communicate with one another depending on their culture and
mental/physical circumstances (deaf, blind).
One characteristic of language is that everything we refer to is symbolized by a word. The way we put
words in a sentence and combine them to make sense, would conclude that we have a basic
understanding of what role words play in a sentence (noun, verb, pronoun). We would not know this if
not through language. Through language we are able to speak, write, read and understand. As
Robinson Riegler (2008) brings out, all the words a person knows comprise their mental lexicon and is
a part of our semantic memory.

How Does Chimpanzees Use Language
Can animals learn to use language or is it all a load of monkey business? Animals can not use
language because language is an exclusive skill that belongs to humans. Chimpanzees can
communicate with each other, but that doesn t qualify as language. One type of Chimpanzee is
learning in a laboratory, however, they are only learning simplistic symbols.
One reason why Chimps communicate but don t use language is they can be trained since birth, but
they still won t be able to communicate with the complexity level that humans do. Kanzi the Bonobo
learned 348 symbols at the age of 26 which is the equivalent 3,000 English words. Even if animals

It is impossible because of how complex our way of communication is. It states in the article skeptical
scientists insist that when chimpanzees or other animals are taught to use words or signs, more often
than not they are performing a type of trick for a treat. This gives supporting evidence that animals
aren t improving their way of communication but doing a task for their exquisite food. The animals

Throughout history, man has created and listened to music for many purposes. Music has served to
express emotions such as joy or sorrow, and has done so very effectively. Music has been a tool of
communication in this way, helping one man to understand another and providing a medium of
interconnection. Every known society throughout history has had some form of music. Some would
look at music as a small footnote in the progression of humanity, it is in fact a much greater force; for
some, it defines their very existence (Andrew). The fact is, music is a driving force in society; it has
been present since the dawn of man. Andrew then explains how though some results are questionable,
the consensus view seems to be that music has the capacity for both positive and negative effects.
Listening to music as a background activity has been shown to positively affect mood, productivity,
and even intelligence. Music can make us feel a certain way. Music sets moods and creates
atmospheres. So in short, music has the power to culturally, morally, and emotionally influence our

The American Dream
When people come to America, they come because the want to live the American dream. But what
actually is the American dream? Does it truly exist? When one thinks of the American dream they
instantly think of the Declaration of Independence because they too also believe that all men are
created equal but also believe in the beauty of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. United States
citizens as well as immigrants, believed in what the declaration had said and that it would push them
closer to an experience of the American dream. Though people are excited to move towards a better
life, they become a bit hesitant because they do not know exactly what the American dream is, nor do
they know if all people are granted the same chance towards the American dream due to their age,
race, their social status, traditions and any other factors. John Adams once stated that this American
dream we speak of should give a better life to everyone but only according to their ability. To me this
means that everyone deserves a better life but we cannot just give you everything, you have to show
what you can do, and how far your American dream goes depends on you, your ability, and how hard

freedom, and individuality. Most of these themes are all shown by the majority of the characters in the

In Anthem love is a very important theme. The love between
Liberty 5 3000 and Equality 7 2521 was true, even though it is said ?what is not thought by all men
cannot be true?(Anthem, Page 81). Their love brought them for a civilization where the word ?I? did
not exist to a world of their own where they were free to do what they loved. Throughout their entire
relationship their love was forbidden, yet Liberty 5 3000 and
Equality 7 2521 broke the law for their love.
Individuality was also a major theme in the novel Anthem.
Equality7 2521 showed his individuality in many ways. Early in Equality
