Comparison Of Eugenics And The Supreme Court
Eugenics and the Supreme Court The United States and Nazi Germany, an unlikely pair. The disparity
of values and beliefs of the two has set them as polar opposites in many people s minds. However,
when Eugenics and the 1927 Supreme Court come to mind the distance between the two seem to
diminish. Yes, today s topic is the infamous Supreme Court case of Buck v. Bell; a 1927 case which
upheld a Virginia statute that permitted the compulsory sterilization Carrie Buck and other
intellectually disabled individuals for the purpose of improving the genepool . This shocking 8 1
ruling is no doubt one of the Supreme Court s greatest errors as it failed to acknowledge that the
statute in question aside from being immoral and cruel, was a clear violation ... Show more content on

Prior to this case only a handful of states enforced such laws. However this kind of legislation
remained controversial enough to maintain the nation s rates of compulsory sterilization nearly
nonexistent. However this Supreme Court ruling legitimized eugenic sterilization laws throughout the
country as more and more states began to enact laws which closely resembled the Virginia statute.
This resulted in over 62,000 intellectually disabled or mentally ill Americans being forced into the
operation room. While the main target of such programs were the feeble minded, however some states
legislation also targeted the blind, deaf, epileptic, and

Tutsi Women Of The Rwanda
In 1994 the country of Rwanda experienced genocide that killed thousands of people. This genocide
was mostly against the Tutsi but also men, women and children of Hutu decent that were found to be
in contact with Tutsi. The conflict between the Tutsi, Twa and Hutu people began when the Belgium
colonizers decided to divide the three groups. According to Herndon and Randell (2013) colonial
ideology had promoted the notion of Tutsi women as more aesthetically pleasing because of imagined
similarities to European features (p.73). Which is why during the genocide of 1994, Tutsi women were
victims of sexual violence, were told by their perpetrators that they wanted to find out if Tutsi women
were really different from Hutu women. A lot of women ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As long as they were somehow associated with Tutsi men, they had to die because they did not want a
Tutsi baby born from any of the women.
Both men and women experienced the genocide but what women went through made women
understand the meaning of discrimination. Herndon and Randell state that women ... experienced
fighting as soldiers, hiding from perpetrators, fleeing pogroms, rape as a war crime, sexual slavery, the
killing of their children all aspects of the genocide (p.79). All women experienced this and it did not
matter their ethnicity, social and economic class, sexual orientation and identity and or marital status.
Even women that were menstruating, pregnant, breast feeding their babies, going through menopause,
sick or caring for the sick and elderly were targeted as prey.
Women were more likely to be kept as sexual slaves than men so a lot more survived the genocide
than men. Before the genocide women participated in politics, but they could only do so if things they
were supposed to do as mothers, wives or just as a female were not affected. Because a lot of the men
were either dead or in prison, women and girls had to make decisions if they had to survive. Women
and girls stepped in to become heads of the household and in order to do this they had to learn new
skills. Tutsi and Hutu women were able to come together after the genocide of 1994 and support each
other. As Herndon and Randell (2013) pointed out great violence,

Where the Red Fern Grows Essay
Where the Red Fern Grows
I cannot remember the first time I read Where the Red Fern Grows, by Wilson Rawls. I read it at about
age ten, and I have lost count of how many times I read it since. It was a period in my life when
childhood was nearly over, but adolescence had not yet set in, and it was a time when animals were
my greatest love.
Where the Red Fern Grows is a novel about a young boy and his two dogs, but to an animal lover, it is
much more. The story is told in the first person narrative, by an adult reminiscing about his childhood;
the reader experiences life through the eyes of an eleven year old boy living in the Ozark Mountains
of Arkansas. Over the boy s shoulder, an older narrator frequently ... Show more content on

As a child I read Where the Red Fern Grows for its adventures and the profound love Billy has for his
two dogs. Billy and his dogs go hunting every night and play in the river during the day. Since I felt I
was somewhat of a tomboy, and had two dogs of my own, this greatly appealed to me. The suspense I
felt whenever the dogs treed a coon, or the time Grandpa was lost in the blizzard and the dogs found
him, never ceased each time I read the book. As I re read it now, however, I can see that there are
many more factors that appealed to me, but I did not realize it at the time.
This is a book about love not only human love for an animal, but the love of a parent for a child, a
man for his home, and a special love between two animals. Billy s family is extremely close knit. His
mother teaches Billy and his two sisters to read and write because the school is too far away, and when
he turns eleven. Billy s father lets him help out in the fields. To complete the happy nest. Grandpa
lives right down the road, and has the family over every Sunday afternoon for supper. There is security
in this atmosphere of love. After leaving home for three days to pick up the puppies, Billy s mother
breaks down and cries at his return this is punishment enough for Billy, and he

Essay on Benefits and Downsides to the Double Gloving System
The merits of double gloving are obvious to many individuals; it provides two layers of protection
instead of one, for instance. Greater protection from pathogens is implied in this system. One might
assume that in clinical settings, it would be foolish not to require healthcare workers to double glove.
There are, however, downsides to the double glove system, as well as lack of improvement in
preventing the spread of pathogens when comparing double gloving to single gloving. These factors
must also be explored before double gloving can be crowned as a superior method for protecting both
patients and clinicians from the spread of pathogens. There are several benefits to double gloving that
have been supported by recent studies ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Considering that perforation rates can be as high as 78% in certain surgical procedures [4], it seems
just unconscionable that double gloving not be a requirement in the OR. It is also important to address
a common concern among surgeons regarding double gloving: that by double gloving, surgeons lose
manual dexterity and tactile sensation, compared to single gloving [3]. Evidence provided in at least
one study has shown that the loss of dexterity and tactile sensation is indeed simply a perception; in
the study, experienced surgeons were split into groups of either a no glove system, a single glove
system or a double glove system and were tested on measures of manual dexterity and sensitivity [3].
After comparing measures of manual dexterity and sensitivity between the single gloved and double
gloved groups, the results demonstrated that double gloving does not have a substantial impact on
manual dexterity or tactile sensitivity when compared with a no glove system or a single glove system.
It is clear that double gloving provides certain benefits in terms of protection from healthcare workers
hands and potential pathogens, but what is not clear is whether protecting one s hands is enough to
have a meaningful impact on reducing the spread nosocomial diseases. In a study that showed
significantly decreased presence of virus on the hands of healthcare workers who were double gloved
vs. single gloved, the presence of virus on the clothes worn under

Counterintelligence In Law Enforcement
Badge and credentials, and firearms are issued to federal agents or law enforcement officers to
conduct official business and protect themselves and others. Agencies such as the Federal Bureau of
Investigations (FBI), Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), the Army s Criminal Investigation Division
(CID), and many other federal agencies work in this capacity of carrying firearms, badge and
credentials without the associated stigma and constraints that counterintelligence suffer from. Very
few Army counterintelligence offices or entities function in the same manner as our civilian
counterparts. Therefore, the question is why the Counterintelligence Corp is not working in the same

Counterintelligence agents already have the DOD Directive authority to carry firearms. To resolve the
issue all we need to do is get the memorandum completed, signed, and conduct some training
regarding carrying of firearms and use of force. By reaching out to our FBI, DEA, or CID counter
parts to conduct the firearms training, to the same standard they hold. This training will count as a
legitimate training for individual agents who are already concealed carry agents. We operate in many
of the same capacities, our ability to protect others and ourselves should not be different. The stigma
of our B C usage can be resolved at the section level, by trusting our fellow agents to do the right
thing, and to police our own when they are not. As counterintelligence agents, we need to start treating
and functioning as the federal agents, we are, and not as the individuals who initiate this stigma in the
first place. In the event B C or firearms are misused, it should be an individual punishment and
correction and not an entire Counterintelligence Corp

The Impact of Lowering the Drinking Age on State...
The legal drinking age in the United States will always be a point of contention. No one can settle
upon a drinking age that everyone is in agreement with; should it be 18 or 21? Ages 18 and 21 are the
most popular options, yet neither one has 100% of the vote. With the current legal drinking age in
America standing at 21, meaning that people under the age of 21 cannot purchase or consume
alcoholic food or beverages, there is the question of whether or not to lower it to 18 or 19 years old.
This paper will argue that the drinking age should be lowered, and examine its impact on State
University. Almost everyone has an opinion on what the drinking age should be. Some people believe
that it should stay at 21. However, others argue ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The answer to these questions would greatly impact the future of campuses nationwide. The State
University campus is dry, meaning there is neither alcohol nor paraphernalia allowed on the campus at
any time regardless of age. In the same city, however, Christian Brothers University is a wet campus
that allows all students 21 and older to have alcohol in their dorms and around campus. A major
question that should be considered is how schools such as these two would be affected in their policies
if the drinking age were lowered. One side to this debate is that the legal drinking age should be
lowered from 21 to around 18 or 19 years old, and that young adults should be allowed to drink in
controlled environments. This idea is presented by Ruth Engs, a professor of Applied Sciences at
Indiana University. She states that environments such as taverns, pubs, restaurants and official
university functions can be considered to be controlled environments. In these situations responsible
drinking could be taught through role modeling and educational programs. Mature and sensible
drinking behavior would be expected (Engs). In her article, Engs uses phrases such as forbidden fruit,
and a badge of rebellion against authority to describe how teens view drinking. In her opinion, if the
drinking age were to be lowered, young adults would no longer feel the pressure to drink in order to
be cool.

Raphael s Letter To Pope Leo X
Like many popes before him, Pope Leo X aspired to renovate Rome to reflect the power of
Christianity. In their quest to establish Rome as an important religious center, the popes goal was to
destroy most ancient ruins and erase the city s pagan history. In the efforts to prevent a complete
destruction of Rome s past, Raphael expresses his concerns and beliefs in the Report to Pope Leo X.
In his letter, Raphael tries to convince the Pope to put a stop to the destruction of the city by glorifying
the work and architecture of the ancients. Raphael tries to reason with the Pope by reminding him
about the glory of the town in the ancient times, which was due to the significant efforts and talents of
its people. He also laments about the destruction

Charles Darwin Chapter 7
Chapter 7 revolves around beginnings of human research into the idea of evolution and an
introduction of Charles Darwin s theory of evolution. This chapter has given us, as students, more
knowledge and insight into the topic of evolution. Since we were little kids, we always thought of
evolution as the theory that establishes the link between humans and monkeys or that the phrase
Survival of the fittest meant that the strongest always prevailed over the weak. However, this chapter
has given us more detailed knowledge and background information about evolution, allowing us to lift
these rumors and myths from our minds.
Throughout this chapter, we have learnt about multiple new concepts and topics such as the mutations,
artificial selection, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was interesting to learn about this theory that has become the basis of many vital concepts
concerning biology. He changed the way we see things in our universe. It was also very intriguing to
see that Charles was very hesitant to publish his book because he feared that it might not be taken
serious or that it would be thought of as rubbish. Therefore, he spent multiple years piecing together
his observations and lots of evidence to support his theory. This is very similar to modern day because
multiple people are very reluctant about what they say or do because of how society will react or the
backlash they will receive.
This unit has also opened me up to a new method of learning, which is more self oriented. I personally
do not enjoy this type of learning because it removes the way I prefer to learn. I personally like for the
teacher to lecture and teach the topic, this allows for me to write down notes that would be important
from the teacher s view. This new method of learning also forces me to do everything as I wish, even
though being a young adult I need to make my own decisions; this is too open and liberal. It allows the
student to dictate on their own terms and

The Representation of Women, Men, and Sexuality in Music...
OVERVIEW
In this second update of 1991 s groundbreaking Dreamworlds, Sut Jhally critically examines the
representation of women, men, and sexuality in music videos. Jhally s primary argument is that music
videos, not unlike other forms of advertising and popular culture, represent the pornographic
imagination by offering a degraded and limited view of female sexuality based on narrowly defined
adolescent heterosexual male fantasies. Locating the stories and images of music video in a wider
context, the film explores how American popular culture, more generally, encourages and excuses
men s violence against women, and argues that we need a wider range of stories about femininity,
masculinity, and sexuality.
Special Note: This video ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
6. Market research drives a lot of what appears in music videos. This means that much of what you see
is designed to sell something whether it is specific products, ideas, or attitudes. Other than CDs,
downloads, concert tickets, or band merchandise, what do you think music videos are designed to sell?
7. How does what Jhally defines as the Dreamworld of music video differ from or echo the
dreamworlds of other advertising genres?
ASSIGNMENTS
1. Cut out 3 or 4 magazine ads that feature pictures of men and women. Tape your ads to the walls of
the classroom and then walk around and look at what everyone else brought in. Participate in a group
discussion on any patterns you detect. What consistent stories about gender are told in these ads? How
do these images compare to the images in music videos? 2. Interview other students about their use of
music videos. Do they enjoy them? How often do they watch? What do they think of the images used?
What do they think of how men and women are depicted? Do they think their own ideas about gender
and sexuality have been influenced by music videos and other media? Many people will say no to this
last question. If they do, follow up by asking them to explain their answer and where they think their
ideas about gender and sex come from. Also, ask them if they think their friends are influenced. Take
notes, and write a summary of the results of your interviews. Be prepared to discuss your findings

The Effects Of Fossil Fuel On Canada s Northern And...
Canada s Northern and Aboriginal communities span a vast geographic area with very different
circumstances. However, they are similar in the fact that they have all depended on technologies that
use fossil fuels either diesel fuel or coal based energy generation (Weis, 2013). A disadvantage of
diesel fuel is that it is too expensive and risky for these communities. Another disadvantage of fossil
fuels is that it can compromise the environment by creating pollution and also contributing to climate
change. For instance, numerous diesel spills in remote communities have contaminated buildings and
local soils, and have impacted the quality of local air (Weis, 2013). Fossil fuel emissions can also
cause health problems for people in these communities (Government of Canada, 2010a). Therefore,
using fossil fuel energy can have extensive and unpredictable economic, environmental, and social
consequences. In terms of economic consequences, there are high expenses for energy because heating
fuel in a cold location such as Northern Canada is high in demand (Government of Canada, 2010a).
Another reason for high expenses is due to the expensive transportation costs for diesel fuel to be
brought into the Canadian territories, especially in harsh winter conditions (Government of Canada,
2010a). At the same time, prices of diesel fuel fluctuate since it is a non renewable resource, and this
means that relying on it can also be risky (Weis, 2013).
In terms of environmental consequences,

(i) Shunt APF
This type of configuration is widely used in active filtering applications. A shunt APF has a
controllable voltage or current source. Fig. 3.4 demonstrates principal configuration of a voltage
source inverter based APF which the most common type of shunt APF today. It is based on the
principle of injection of harmonic current equivalent to the distorted current waveform, thus
eliminating the original distorted current. This is connected in shunt with the distribution line through
an interfacing inductor. Fig. 3.4: Basic configuration of Shunt APF
(ii) Series APF
Basic principle of this type of configuration is isolation of harmonics in between nonlinear load and

by an interfacing transformer, where the injection of harmonic voltage occurs. It is otherwise known
as a harmonic isolator, which offers zero impedance to the fundamental and infinite impedance to the
harmonic frequency components. Fig. 3.5 demonstrates the basic configuration of a series APF. Series

Technology Based Learning Essay
Technology based learning (TBL) constitutes learning via electronic technology, including the
Internet, intranets, satellite broadcasts, audio and video conferencing, bulletin boards, chat rooms,
webcasts, and CD ROM. TBL also encompasses related terms, such as online learning and web based
learning that only include learning that occurs via the Internet, and computer based learning that is
restricted to learning through the use of computers. E learning is synonymous with TBL and has
largely replaced it in scholarship and industry as the term of choice.
TBL holds the promise of substantially transforming the way learning takes place because of its
numerous advantages. Among these, TBL fosters greater accessibility to learning by offering anytime
and anywhere delivery. It is readily scalable to both large and small groups since it can accommodate
larger numbers of learners at little extra cost and smaller groups of learners that otherwise would not
be able to participate in traditional classroom training for lack of enrollments. Further, the content of
TBL courses, especially those that are delivered online, can be centrally developed and updated
whenever the need arises; therefore, the cost of replacing outdated course materials and retraining
teachers and instructors drops significantly. From the learners point of view, TBL can be self paced
and matched to the learner s needs, and, building on pedagogy that emphasizes the merits of discovery
learning, it offers

The Day Labor Market in Phoenix, Arizona Essay
The Day Labor Market in Phoenix, Arizona
Introduction
This paper focuses on the Macehualli Day Labor Union located in Phoenix, Arizona in the 85032 area.
Throughout the history of the United States, illegal immigrants have come from all over the world to
find work and a better way of life. It is estimated that right now there are about seven million illegal
aliens living in America. About 69% of these illegal immigrants are Mexican and over 283,000 of
them live in Arizona1. In this paper, we presuppose that the illegal aliens we refer to are Mexican.
This is because the aliens living in the geographic area around the day labor center we examine are
over 99%

Background of Day Labor
3
These circumstances have lead to the reemergence of a concept that has existed for a long time: day
labor. Day labor used to be geared more towards American citizens looking for temporary jobs, but
has now taken a new turn in order to fit the necessities of illegal workers. Day labor is defined as a
practice of searching for work in open air, informal markets such as street corners or in formal temp
agencies ( Work, 307).
Under this type of labor, the undocumented immigrant is considered an independent contractor or a
temporary domestic worker, and therefore employers are not obliged to ask for work authorization (
Work, 325). Day labor is extremely beneficial to aliens in that it allows immigrants to enter the work
force without being required to have legal immigration status.
There are two types of day labor industries: informal and formal. Informal day labor consists mostly
of men gathering on street corners or parking lots to solicit work. It is considered informal because it
is in no way regulated. The men are often picked up by passing cars and hired for the day on terms
worked out between the employer and the laborer. By contrast, the formal day labor industry is
connected to for profit temp agencies. These agencies place workers in specific manual jobs and take a
percentage of the workers

Essay on Reflection on a Critical Incident
The reason for this essay is to reflect on a critical incident experience during my six week placement
as a student nurse on an orthopedic ward. To explore an event as a critical incident is a value
judgment, and the basis of that judgment is the significance attached to the meaning of the incident.
Critical incidents are created or produced by the way we look at a situation. Tripp (1993)
The incident chosen has made an impact on me due to the fact the side effects of surgery can be very
critical to a patient s life, as would be demonstrated in the critical incident chosen (D.V.T). Deep vein
thrombosis.
There are various reflective models written by various theorists and they include: Atkins and Murphy
(1994), Stephenson (1993), ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One may also reflect on practice while one is on the midst of it. This process involves both reflections
in action and reflection in practice (Johns 2000). Schon states that reflection in action consists of on
the spot surfacing, criticizing, restructuring and testing of intuitive understanding of experience
phenomenon (Schon 1983) P.241.
Reflective learning involves assessment and re assessment of assumptions and critical reflective
occurs whenever underlying premises are being questioned .(Williams 2001) P.29.
In choosing Gibbs reflective model it would be illustrated in the six headings which guide me through
my reflective process. These headings include:
(1.) Description what happened?
(2.) Feelings what were you feeling?
(3.) Evaluation what was good or bad about the experience?
(4.) Analysis what sense can be made of the situation?
(5.) Conclusion what else could you have done?
(6.) Action plan if the situation arises again what would you do?
Description:
This critical incident took place during my first six week placement on the ward (Eleanor east). My
rationale for this critical incident is because of the impact it had on me. I did not know that the side
effects of hip replacement surgery could result in DVT (deep vein thrombosis), which could be very
critical physically and mentally.

Ian Curtis was 23 years old when he hung himself in his home in Macclesfield, England. The events
that led to the singers death should have been warning signs of his plans, but his personality kept him

had a considerably normal childhood to follow. He had one little sister and his working class family
were very tightnit with other family members as well as each other. (Curtis 1995)Ian was a cheerful
child who loved to read and socialize with the neighborhood boys. During his teenage years he

of the illness took hold. (Curtis 1995) Ian was put on several anti seizure medications and his mood
worsened after this and his work in Joy Division was greatly impaired. He began an affair with a
Belgian journalist Annik Honore and the stress of carrying on both relationships caused his depression
to spiral and he made his first suicide attempt with notes concerning his two relationships. He took too
many of his seizure medications and was released with no talk of aftercare or psychological treatment
of any kind. Eleven months later he succeeded and it was his wife who noticed the signs and begged
him to get help. Ian s friends with whom he stayed his last weeks with stated that Ian would not leave
bed all day and would engage in violent arguments with them.. He left there to try and save his
marriage and following another violent outburst towards his wife he hung himself after she left him
alone in their Maccelsfield home. Biologically, theorists would want to look at Ian Curtis family
history with depression and whether or not his disorder came from a genetic predisposition or possibly
a result of his seizure disorder. Biological theorists view abnormal behavior as an illness brought
about by malfunctioning parts of the organism. (Comer 2011) Scientifically this theory could explain
several physiological reasons why Ian behaved the way he did, as

there is a story behind the founding of Deer Park Water Company. After the Civil War, the Deer Park
Hotel was built in the Appalachian Mountains located in Maryland by the Baltimore and Ohio
Railroad. The hotel was created to attract those who took passage on the railroad, but the spring that
was located nearby also caught the attention of the travelers. The spring was known for the appeal of a
clean source of water, this led the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad to start putting the water into bottles in
1873. It was known as the Boiling Spring because the water comes through sand on the way up. A
company, known as The Boiling Spring Holding Corporation, purchased the spring and the woods
surrounding it in 1966. The Boiling Spring Holding Corporation decided to put the spring to a use and
made a profit bottling up the water and selling it mainly throughout the New York area, until
production eventually expanded across the nation. Most of the water in the spring is located near the
Appalachian Trail. Something interesting about the Deer Park Hotel is that President Taft and his wife
had their honeymoon there. Deer Park Water Company is a sub corporation of the Nestle Waters North
America Company. Nestle Waters North America was founded in 1976 and started out importing
Perrier Sparkling Water before moving on to include regular bottled water. At the time that the
company was first

Sports sponsorship makes it possible to link the aspiration and passion of a target audience to specific
sports (Arun, 2004). In general, sponsorship holds a unique position in the marketing mix because it is
effective in building brand awareness, providing differentiated marketing platforms, facilitating direct
business benefits and providing valuable networking and hospitality opportunities (ADREVIEW). The
number of companies sponsoring events has increased over the past decade.
However, it is somewhat unclear how the effectiveness of event marketing activities can be measured.
As mentioned earlier, approach to sports sponsorship can be divided into two

Essay on Thycydides and The Peloponnesian War
The perspective that Thucydides took to write History of the Peloponnesian War gave his work, on a
first read, the impression that his opinion was removed to provide an objective analysis of the
destruction of the greatness of Athens over the period of the war. He began with a medical history of
how humanity structured the first societies based on the interplay between fear, interest, and honor.
Then, progressed to how war devolved the great Athenian society. Which took Thucydides from
revisiting eloquent speeches over strategy to simpler retellings of brash disputes. Thoughtful
placement displayed Thucydides opinion of Athens actions, how he viewed the other city states
positions on various issues in the book, and emphasized ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Pericles words, the man who can most truly be accounted brave is he who best knows the meaning of
what is sweet in life and of what is terrible, and then goes out undeterred to meet what is to come.
(Thucydides Pg. 147) addressed fear through the common countermeasure of bravery. What he wants
to get across is the fact fear should not be ignored but calculated and met in an intellectual manner. In
Pericles mind this effective method showed the acknowledgement of the resolution to move past this
and on to the other society structures levels of interest and honor. Pericles rational reasoning of the
society structure addressed fear through countermeasures then progressed to interest and emphasized
honor. In the case of the funeral oration the fear of bodily injury is addressed and overcome due to the
rationalization that it promotes the interest of the general people and bestows honor on the individual
through successfully fulfilling relationships of fear, interest, and honor, in service to Athens.
The service to Athens was expected not only on the battlefield but in the political realm as well. The
firm stance taken by Pericles about the political interests of the citizens of Athens was, we do not say
that a man who takes no interest in politics is a man who minds his own business; we say that he

French Involvement In The California Gold Rush
French Involvement in the California Gold Rush
California Gold Rush, Mexican War, Who found gold. Why the Mexicans didn t.
During the late 1840s, France had suffered commercial decline. France had begun construction on a
large scale rail network, but failed to budget their construction properly, leaving the construction
unfinished, and it s backers bankrupt. This cascaded further than the initial investors, as smelters who
relied on the railways to buy their metal lost a major purchaser. The resulting economic fallout lead to
unemployment across several industries. The lack of work for the majority of the populace led many
to poverty. At the time, bread prices began rising prices, further straining the economic situation of the

While newspapers such as the New York Herald touted the grandiose tales of gold flowing in
California. Papers such as the Times of gand the Courrier des Etats Unis were more relaxed in their
reports, expecting newspapers such as the Herald to have greatly exaggerated the news in California,
as was expected of Americans at the time. In addition to the skeptical attitude held by the Courrier, the
gold rush did not reach national attention immediately due to more pressing matters at home.
Following the uprising came the freedom of the press, universal suffrage regardless of gender, and the
national elections for President of France; these topics dominated French headlines, and competed
against the reports of gold. Still, the gold rumors managed to pepper the daily newspapers. The
populace however, remained adamant that the reports were simply American fantasy. It wasn t until
December fifth, 1848, when President Polk delivered his State of the Union and confirmed the rumors
of gold in California, did the acceptance of the gold rush become unanimous. With the elections

Canada Participation In The War On Iraq Essay
Canada had made the right decision not to take part in the war. The US invasion of Iraq in 2003 made
a terrible impact on both Iraq and America. Both of these countries should have solved the situation
differently. America, however had no real evidence for why they sent U.S. forces to launch an attack
on Iraq. Iraq had never tried to threaten America. On the other hand, this war caused a lot of
confusion. Canada did not think that this war was necessary to start. There were good reasons why
Canada refused to participate in the war on Iraq. It was based on lies, changed the way other countries
viewed Iraq, and it led to disasters. The invasion that took place caused a lot of chaos and problems.
First of all, Canada was right to refuse to participate in the war on Iraq for the reason that the war was
based on lies. America had been suspected that they had an involvement with the CIA. George Bush

Deck Railing
Choosing the Right Style in Deck Railing
Whether you are building a new deck or just remodeling your old one, it is important to chose the
right style for your design. When choosing your new wrought iron deck railings it is important to keep
size, style, function, and safety all in mind. As these four things are the most important aspects to
consider. Below you will find more information that might help you better decide which railing to go
with.
Choosing A Style
Railings come in several different styles. Therefore, you need to consider the style home you have
before you choose your iron railing. You don t want to have a modern railing if you house is an old
Victorian. The same goes for the opposite as well. You won t want to go with a classic design if you
have a newer modern home. You want to have a seamless look. That is why wrought iron railing ...

The railings is what keeps people in and people out. If you are trying to prevent entrance on and off of
your deck you might look into getting a high railing instead of a short one which is mainly used as a
side rail. However, side rails are great for those who are just wanting some type of basic railing around
their deck. Railing height is solely a personal opinion. Think about what you want out of your railing
in order to figure out which height you will need.
Think About Safety
One of the great things about wrought iron railing is it comes in a varieties of sizes and options.
Therefore it can be pretty custom to your wishes. If you have a family, or little ones around at all, you
need to take their safety into consideration. As with all railing wrought iron has gaps between each
rail, you will want to make sure that this railing is close enough together that little heads can t get
stuck in the sections. Wrought iron can also contain a locking mechanism so that kids can t get to the
stairs. These are a few things to remember when taking safety into consideration.

The Four Styles Of Learning By Honey And Mumford
Learning is the art of gaining skills, preference, information, ethics, behavior and can engage one in

learning as follows Activists, Reflectors, Theorists and Pragmatists.
Activists are the people who a re risk takers and they like experimenting new things and doing the
work based on trial and error method. For instance when a student learns a new chemical formula in a
chemistry class, he would be more enthusiastic to do the experiment at home and see what the result

Short Essay On Sophocles
The Ancient Greeks were fans of plays and feats of prowess while simultaneously proving themselves
better than everyone else. Sophocles is regarded as one of the most decorated Greek tragedians,
writing over 120 plays (Downey). He was a very important figure in Athens, taking up several
important roles in the government. He took up the role of commissioner in the Peloponnesian War, led
a victorious battle at Salamis at the age of 16, and many other accomplishments as well, not to
mention his esteemed writing career ( Ancient Greece Sophocles ; Sophocles ). Sophocles was an
Ancient Greek tragedian who had a very decorated career until his death in 405 BCE, who influenced
every playwright to follow. Sophocles was born in 496 BCE in Hippeios Colonus, a town near Athens,
Greece. He was raised by his father, Sophilus, who was an armor manufacturer ( Ancient Greece

Motor Vehicles and Speed Limits in the United States
Since the first gasoline powered vehicle was invented, automobile technology has advanced at a rapid
pace to bring us faster, safer vehicles (Managing Speed). Roads have improved from dirt and gravel to
asphalt and concrete, and the number of vehicles on the road has increased exponentially. The motor
vehicle has become the backbone of today s society. Speed limits in the United States are at the
highest they have ever been, yet vehicles today are powerful enough to easily exceed those posted
speed limits. There are two very different groups of people advocating for what a reasonable speed
limit is: a group lobbying for extreme safety and a group lobbying for faster travel times. Driving is an
inherently risky undertaking no matter what the speed limit is, thus a compromise is tried to be met by
increasing safety while allowing for practical travel times. There have been various methodologies
theorized in setting speed limits, but which one is the best for today s technologies and environments?
Speed limits in the state of Virginia are set using the Operating Speed Method. The Operating Speed
method, or 85th percentile method, uses the speed that 85 percent of free flowing traffic is at or below.
The 85th percentile method relies on driver judgment and collects the vast majority of motorists
traveling on the roadway. If the speed limit was set 5 MPH below the 85th percentile speed, more than
50% of drivers would be illegally speeding, but if the speed limit was increased 5

The Power Of Music, Music And Music
There are many ways to tell a story. Throughout my life I ve find this to be true. As a storyteller
myself, I always try my best to utilize the many different approaches to telling a story. Whether
through music, books, poetry, drawings, films, etc. I ve tried them all. I ve always been fascinated by
other people s stories. I will always try to retell them myself. Most of the time I usually just talk about
them. But once in awhile, I like to use what I think is the most powerful form of storytelling, music.
Music has been part of my life for a while now. Throughout middle school and high school I was in
both Band and Choir. And throughout these years I come to understand the power that music has with
storytelling. Especially in films, I ve grown up watching films and they have impacted my life greatly.
The films, Jesus Christ Super Star, La La Land, and The Grand Budapest Hotel have a musical score
that expresses a story better than any words could ever express.
I grew up Catholic, just as my family grew up Catholic. Every year during the season of Lent, around
the time of Holy Week, my family and I would honor Jesus s final days with many traditions.
Tradition such as attending mass, receiving palms, having our feet washed and of course watching the
1974 classic Jesus Christ Superstar. Now the Roman Catholic Church dosen t considered Jesus Christ
Superstar a tradition, but I do. My family and I will all get together and eat some popcorn and drink
some pop.

Should Doctors Regulate Fees
It is said that doctors are being accused of overcharging their clients. Some believe that the
government should regulate the fees which doctors are allowed to charge and some believe they
shouldn t. However, I think they shouldn t regulate the fees because doctors spend countless hours
getting into a medical school to make money, it is not the doctors fault the client needed care which is
why we should take care of ourselves more, and lastly most doctors are running on their own practice
and supplies to do their job. First, people who want to go into the medical field have to work hard for
it. For example, they spent loads and loads of hours studying to get into the program. I think it s unfair
for the government to step in and try to regulate

Education And Recidivism Essay
Though there is evidence that educational programs are needed to help in reducing crime, politicians
and policy makers have not really understood this finding and thereby support the programs they
assume are better suited at deterring criminals. Thus, they directed funding from educational programs
to other areas, such as in security and anger management or drug treatment (Batiuk et al 2005).
Furthermore, studies have shown that those inmates that are released from prison, about two thirds of
them end up being re incarcerated within three years of their release (Klein et al 2004). As a result,

However most of the research did in fact have controls for some of these risk factors indicated above,
thereby reducing structural inequalities that may be there in crime occurrence (Lori 2015). If there is
no control on these risk factors, it can be said that there is a correlation but no causation between
correctional education and recidivism, which is what most policymakers argue (Lori 2015). Public
opinion also has a big impact on political will and what policies will be implemented and how. Thus,
empirical research is more or less useless as it is hard to influence public opinion just by data (Latessa
2004). This can be seen historically, asin 1994, a law was signed in US called the Violent Crime
Control and Law Enforcement Act (VCCLEA) which was the one of the main reasons of budget cuts
of towards correctional education. VCCLEA allowed funding from the education programs to be used

  • 2. Comparison Of Eugenics And The Supreme Court Eugenics and the Supreme Court The United States and Nazi Germany, an unlikely pair. The disparity of values and beliefs of the two has set them as polar opposites in many people s minds. However, when Eugenics and the 1927 Supreme Court come to mind the distance between the two seem to diminish. Yes, today s topic is the infamous Supreme Court case of Buck v. Bell; a 1927 case which upheld a Virginia statute that permitted the compulsory sterilization Carrie Buck and other intellectually disabled individuals for the purpose of improving the genepool . This shocking 8 1 ruling is no doubt one of the Supreme Court s greatest errors as it failed to acknowledge that the statute in question aside from being immoral and cruel, was a clear violation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Prior to this case only a handful of states enforced such laws. However this kind of legislation remained controversial enough to maintain the nation s rates of compulsory sterilization nearly nonexistent. However this Supreme Court ruling legitimized eugenic sterilization laws throughout the country as more and more states began to enact laws which closely resembled the Virginia statute. This resulted in over 62,000 intellectually disabled or mentally ill Americans being forced into the operation room. While the main target of such programs were the feeble minded, however some states legislation also targeted the blind, deaf, epileptic, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Tutsi Women Of The Rwanda In 1994 the country of Rwanda experienced genocide that killed thousands of people. This genocide was mostly against the Tutsi but also men, women and children of Hutu decent that were found to be in contact with Tutsi. The conflict between the Tutsi, Twa and Hutu people began when the Belgium colonizers decided to divide the three groups. According to Herndon and Randell (2013) colonial ideology had promoted the notion of Tutsi women as more aesthetically pleasing because of imagined similarities to European features (p.73). Which is why during the genocide of 1994, Tutsi women were victims of sexual violence, were told by their perpetrators that they wanted to find out if Tutsi women were really different from Hutu women. A lot of women ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As long as they were somehow associated with Tutsi men, they had to die because they did not want a Tutsi baby born from any of the women. Both men and women experienced the genocide but what women went through made women understand the meaning of discrimination. Herndon and Randell state that women ... experienced fighting as soldiers, hiding from perpetrators, fleeing pogroms, rape as a war crime, sexual slavery, the killing of their children all aspects of the genocide (p.79). All women experienced this and it did not matter their ethnicity, social and economic class, sexual orientation and identity and or marital status. Even women that were menstruating, pregnant, breast feeding their babies, going through menopause, sick or caring for the sick and elderly were targeted as prey. Women were more likely to be kept as sexual slaves than men so a lot more survived the genocide than men. Before the genocide women participated in politics, but they could only do so if things they were supposed to do as mothers, wives or just as a female were not affected. Because a lot of the men were either dead or in prison, women and girls had to make decisions if they had to survive. Women and girls stepped in to become heads of the household and in order to do this they had to learn new skills. Tutsi and Hutu women were able to come together after the genocide of 1994 and support each other. As Herndon and Randell (2013) pointed out great violence, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Where the Red Fern Grows Essay Where the Red Fern Grows I cannot remember the first time I read Where the Red Fern Grows, by Wilson Rawls. I read it at about age ten, and I have lost count of how many times I read it since. It was a period in my life when childhood was nearly over, but adolescence had not yet set in, and it was a time when animals were my greatest love. Where the Red Fern Grows is a novel about a young boy and his two dogs, but to an animal lover, it is much more. The story is told in the first person narrative, by an adult reminiscing about his childhood; the reader experiences life through the eyes of an eleven year old boy living in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas. Over the boy s shoulder, an older narrator frequently ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As a child I read Where the Red Fern Grows for its adventures and the profound love Billy has for his two dogs. Billy and his dogs go hunting every night and play in the river during the day. Since I felt I was somewhat of a tomboy, and had two dogs of my own, this greatly appealed to me. The suspense I felt whenever the dogs treed a coon, or the time Grandpa was lost in the blizzard and the dogs found him, never ceased each time I read the book. As I re read it now, however, I can see that there are many more factors that appealed to me, but I did not realize it at the time. This is a book about love not only human love for an animal, but the love of a parent for a child, a man for his home, and a special love between two animals. Billy s family is extremely close knit. His mother teaches Billy and his two sisters to read and write because the school is too far away, and when he turns eleven. Billy s father lets him help out in the fields. To complete the happy nest. Grandpa lives right down the road, and has the family over every Sunday afternoon for supper. There is security in this atmosphere of love. After leaving home for three days to pick up the puppies, Billy s mother breaks down and cries at his return this is punishment enough for Billy, and he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Essay on Benefits and Downsides to the Double Gloving System The merits of double gloving are obvious to many individuals; it provides two layers of protection instead of one, for instance. Greater protection from pathogens is implied in this system. One might assume that in clinical settings, it would be foolish not to require healthcare workers to double glove. There are, however, downsides to the double glove system, as well as lack of improvement in preventing the spread of pathogens when comparing double gloving to single gloving. These factors must also be explored before double gloving can be crowned as a superior method for protecting both patients and clinicians from the spread of pathogens. There are several benefits to double gloving that have been supported by recent studies ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Considering that perforation rates can be as high as 78% in certain surgical procedures [4], it seems just unconscionable that double gloving not be a requirement in the OR. It is also important to address a common concern among surgeons regarding double gloving: that by double gloving, surgeons lose manual dexterity and tactile sensation, compared to single gloving [3]. Evidence provided in at least one study has shown that the loss of dexterity and tactile sensation is indeed simply a perception; in the study, experienced surgeons were split into groups of either a no glove system, a single glove system or a double glove system and were tested on measures of manual dexterity and sensitivity [3]. After comparing measures of manual dexterity and sensitivity between the single gloved and double gloved groups, the results demonstrated that double gloving does not have a substantial impact on manual dexterity or tactile sensitivity when compared with a no glove system or a single glove system. It is clear that double gloving provides certain benefits in terms of protection from healthcare workers hands and potential pathogens, but what is not clear is whether protecting one s hands is enough to have a meaningful impact on reducing the spread nosocomial diseases. In a study that showed significantly decreased presence of virus on the hands of healthcare workers who were double gloved vs. single gloved, the presence of virus on the clothes worn under ... • 6. Counterintelligence In Law Enforcement Badge and credentials, and firearms are issued to federal agents or law enforcement officers to conduct official business and protect themselves and others. Agencies such as the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), the Army s Criminal Investigation Division (CID), and many other federal agencies work in this capacity of carrying firearms, badge and credentials without the associated stigma and constraints that counterintelligence suffer from. Very few Army counterintelligence offices or entities function in the same manner as our civilian counterparts. Therefore, the question is why the Counterintelligence Corp is not working in the same capacity and function as our civilian law enforcement counterparts regarding ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Counterintelligence agents already have the DOD Directive authority to carry firearms. To resolve the issue all we need to do is get the memorandum completed, signed, and conduct some training regarding carrying of firearms and use of force. By reaching out to our FBI, DEA, or CID counter parts to conduct the firearms training, to the same standard they hold. This training will count as a legitimate training for individual agents who are already concealed carry agents. We operate in many of the same capacities, our ability to protect others and ourselves should not be different. The stigma of our B C usage can be resolved at the section level, by trusting our fellow agents to do the right thing, and to police our own when they are not. As counterintelligence agents, we need to start treating and functioning as the federal agents, we are, and not as the individuals who initiate this stigma in the first place. In the event B C or firearms are misused, it should be an individual punishment and correction and not an entire Counterintelligence Corp ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The Impact of Lowering the Drinking Age on State... The legal drinking age in the United States will always be a point of contention. No one can settle upon a drinking age that everyone is in agreement with; should it be 18 or 21? Ages 18 and 21 are the most popular options, yet neither one has 100% of the vote. With the current legal drinking age in America standing at 21, meaning that people under the age of 21 cannot purchase or consume alcoholic food or beverages, there is the question of whether or not to lower it to 18 or 19 years old. This paper will argue that the drinking age should be lowered, and examine its impact on State University. Almost everyone has an opinion on what the drinking age should be. Some people believe that it should stay at 21. However, others argue ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The answer to these questions would greatly impact the future of campuses nationwide. The State University campus is dry, meaning there is neither alcohol nor paraphernalia allowed on the campus at any time regardless of age. In the same city, however, Christian Brothers University is a wet campus that allows all students 21 and older to have alcohol in their dorms and around campus. A major question that should be considered is how schools such as these two would be affected in their policies if the drinking age were lowered. One side to this debate is that the legal drinking age should be lowered from 21 to around 18 or 19 years old, and that young adults should be allowed to drink in controlled environments. This idea is presented by Ruth Engs, a professor of Applied Sciences at Indiana University. She states that environments such as taverns, pubs, restaurants and official university functions can be considered to be controlled environments. In these situations responsible drinking could be taught through role modeling and educational programs. Mature and sensible drinking behavior would be expected (Engs). In her article, Engs uses phrases such as forbidden fruit, and a badge of rebellion against authority to describe how teens view drinking. In her opinion, if the drinking age were to be lowered, young adults would no longer feel the pressure to drink in order to be cool. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Raphael s Letter To Pope Leo X Like many popes before him, Pope Leo X aspired to renovate Rome to reflect the power of Christianity. In their quest to establish Rome as an important religious center, the popes goal was to destroy most ancient ruins and erase the city s pagan history. In the efforts to prevent a complete destruction of Rome s past, Raphael expresses his concerns and beliefs in the Report to Pope Leo X. In his letter, Raphael tries to convince the Pope to put a stop to the destruction of the city by glorifying the work and architecture of the ancients. Raphael tries to reason with the Pope by reminding him about the glory of the town in the ancient times, which was due to the significant efforts and talents of its people. This chapter has given us, as students, more knowledge and insight into the topic of evolution. Since we were little kids, we always thought of evolution as the theory that establishes the link between humans and monkeys or that the phrase Survival of the fittest meant that the strongest always prevailed over the weak. However, this chapter has given us more detailed knowledge and background information about evolution, allowing us to lift these rumors and myths from our minds. It was also very intriguing to see that Charles was very hesitant to publish his book because he feared that it might not be taken serious or that it would be thought of as rubbish. Therefore, he spent multiple years piecing together his observations and lots of evidence to support his theory. This is very similar to modern day because multiple people are very reluctant about what they say or do because of how society will react or the backlash they will receive. This unit has also opened me up to a new method of learning, which is more self oriented. I personally do not enjoy this type of learning because it removes the way I prefer to learn. I personally like for the teacher to lecture and teach the topic, this allows for me to write down notes that would be important from the teacher s view. • 11. The Representation of Women, Men, and Sexuality in Music... OVERVIEW In this second update of 1991 s groundbreaking Dreamworlds, Sut Jhally critically examines the representation of women, men, and sexuality in music videos. Jhally s primary argument is that music videos, not unlike other forms of advertising and popular culture, represent the pornographic imagination by offering a degraded and limited view of female sexuality based on narrowly defined adolescent heterosexual male fantasies. Locating the stories and images of music video in a wider context, the film explores how American popular culture, more generally, encourages and excuses men s violence against women, and argues that we need a wider range of stories about femininity, masculinity, and sexuality. How does what Jhally defines as the Dreamworld of music video differ from or echo the dreamworlds of other advertising genres? ASSIGNMENTS 1. Cut out 3 or 4 magazine ads that feature pictures of men and women. Tape your ads to the walls of the classroom and then walk around and look at what everyone else brought in. Participate in a group discussion on any patterns you detect. What consistent stories about gender are told in these ads? How do these images compare to the images in music videos? 2. Interview other students about their use of music videos. Do they enjoy them? How often do they watch? What do they think of the images used? What do they think of how men and women are depicted? Do they think their own ideas about gender and sexuality have been influenced by music videos and other media? Many people will say no to this last question. • 12. The Effects Of Fossil Fuel On Canada s Northern And... Canada s Northern and Aboriginal communities span a vast geographic area with very different circumstances. However, they are similar in the fact that they have all depended on technologies that use fossil fuels either diesel fuel or coal based energy generation (Weis, 2013). A disadvantage of diesel fuel is that it is too expensive and risky for these communities. Another disadvantage of fossil fuels is that it can compromise the environment by creating pollution and also contributing to climate change. For instance, numerous diesel spills in remote communities have contaminated buildings and local soils, and have impacted the quality of local air (Weis, 2013). Fossil fuel emissions can also cause health problems for people in these communities (Government of Canada, 2010a). Therefore, using fossil fuel energy can have extensive and unpredictable economic, environmental, and social consequences. In terms of economic consequences, there are high expenses for energy because heating fuel in a cold location such as Northern Canada is high in demand (Government of Canada, 2010a). Another reason for high expenses is due to the expensive transportation costs for diesel fuel to be brought into the Canadian territories, especially in harsh winter conditions (Government of Canada, 2010a). At the same time, prices of diesel fuel fluctuate since it is a non renewable resource, and this means that relying on it can also be risky (Weis, 2013). In terms of environmental consequences, ... Technology Based Learning Essay Technology based learning (TBL) constitutes learning via electronic technology, including the Internet, intranets, satellite broadcasts, audio and video conferencing, bulletin boards, chat rooms, webcasts, and CD ROM. TBL also encompasses related terms, such as online learning and web based learning that only include learning that occurs via the Internet, and computer based learning that is restricted to learning through the use of computers. E learning is synonymous with TBL and has largely replaced it in scholarship and industry as the term of choice. TBL holds the promise of substantially transforming the way learning takes place because of its numerous advantages. Among these, TBL fosters greater accessibility to learning by offering anytime and anywhere delivery. It is readily scalable to both large and small groups since it can accommodate larger numbers of learners at little extra cost and smaller groups of learners that otherwise would not be able to participate in traditional classroom training for lack of enrollments. Further, the content of TBL courses, especially those that are delivered online, can be centrally developed and updated whenever the need arises; therefore, the cost of replacing outdated course materials and retraining teachers and instructors drops significantly. From the learners point of view, TBL can be self paced and matched to the learner s needs, and, building on pedagogy that emphasizes the merits of discovery learning, it offers ... It is estimated that right now there are about seven million illegal aliens living in America. About 69% of these illegal immigrants are Mexican and over 283,000 of them live in Arizona1. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Background of Day Labor 3 These circumstances have lead to the reemergence of a concept that has existed for a long time: day labor. Day labor used to be geared more towards American citizens looking for temporary jobs, but has now taken a new turn in order to fit the necessities of illegal workers. Day labor is defined as a practice of searching for work in open air, informal markets such as street corners or in formal temp agencies ( Work, 307). Under this type of labor, the undocumented immigrant is considered an independent contractor or a temporary domestic worker, and therefore employers are not obliged to ask for work authorization ( Work, 325). Day labor is extremely beneficial to aliens in that it allows immigrants to enter the work force without being required to have legal immigration status. There are two types of day labor industries: informal and formal. Informal day labor consists mostly of men gathering on street corners or parking lots to solicit work. It is considered informal because it is in no way regulated. The men are often picked up by passing cars and hired for the day on terms worked out between the employer and the laborer. By contrast, the formal day labor industry is connected to for profit temp agencies. These agencies place workers in specific manual jobs and take a percentage of the workers ... • 21. History Of Deer Park Water Company Essay Do you ever wonder about the origin story behind the brands that we use in our everyday lives? Well there is a story behind the founding of Deer Park Water Company. After the Civil War, the Deer Park Hotel was built in the Appalachian Mountains located in Maryland by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. The hotel was created to attract those who took passage on the railroad, but the spring that was located nearby also caught the attention of the travelers. The spring was known for the appeal of a clean source of water, this led the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad to start putting the water into bottles in 1873. It was known as the Boiling Spring because the water comes through sand on the way up. A company, known as The Boiling Spring Holding Corporation, purchased the spring and the woods surrounding it in 1966. The Boiling Spring Holding Corporation decided to put the spring to a use and made a profit bottling up the water and selling it mainly throughout the New York area, until production eventually expanded across the nation. Most of the water in the spring is located near the Appalachian Trail. Something interesting about the Deer Park Hotel is that President Taft and his wife had their honeymoon there. • 33. Motor Vehicles and Speed Limits in the United States Since the first gasoline powered vehicle was invented, automobile technology has advanced at a rapid pace to bring us faster, safer vehicles (Managing Speed). Roads have improved from dirt and gravel to asphalt and concrete, and the number of vehicles on the road has increased exponentially. The motor vehicle has become the backbone of today s society. Speed limits in the United States are at the highest they have ever been, yet vehicles today are powerful enough to easily exceed those posted speed limits. There are two very different groups of people advocating for what a reasonable speed limit is: a group lobbying for extreme safety and a group lobbying for faster travel times. Driving is an inherently risky undertaking no matter what the speed limit is, thus a compromise is tried to be met by increasing safety while allowing for practical travel times. There have been various methodologies theorized in setting speed limits, but which one is the best for today s technologies and environments? Speed limits in the state of Virginia are set using the Operating Speed Method. The Operating Speed method, or 85th percentile method, uses the speed that 85 percent of free flowing traffic is at or below. The 85th percentile method relies on driver judgment and collects the vast majority of motorists traveling on the roadway. If the speed limit was set 5 MPH below the 85th percentile speed, more than 50% of drivers would be illegally speeding, but if the speed limit was increased 5 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 35. The Power Of Music, Music And Music There are many ways to tell a story. Throughout my life I ve find this to be true. As a storyteller myself, I always try my best to utilize the many different approaches to telling a story. Whether through music, books, poetry, drawings, films, etc. I ve tried them all. I ve always been fascinated by other people s stories. I will always try to retell them myself. Most of the time I usually just talk about them. But once in awhile, I like to use what I think is the most powerful form of storytelling, music. Music has been part of my life for a while now. Throughout middle school and high school I was in both Band and Choir. And throughout these years I come to understand the power that music has with storytelling. Especially in films, I ve grown up watching films and they have impacted my life greatly. The films, Jesus Christ Super Star, La La Land, and The Grand Budapest Hotel have a musical score that expresses a story better than any words could ever express. I grew up Catholic, just as my family grew up Catholic. Every year during the season of Lent, around the time of Holy Week, my family and I would honor Jesus s final days with many traditions. Tradition such as attending mass, receiving palms, having our feet washed and of course watching the 1974 classic Jesus Christ Superstar. Now the Roman Catholic Church dosen t considered Jesus Christ Superstar a tradition, but I do. My family and I will all get together and eat some popcorn and drink some pop. ... • 36. Should Doctors Regulate Fees It is said that doctors are being accused of overcharging their clients. Some believe that the government should regulate the fees which doctors are allowed to charge and some believe they shouldn t. However, I think they shouldn t regulate the fees because doctors spend countless hours getting into a medical school to make money, it is not the doctors fault the client needed care which is why we should take care of ourselves more, and lastly most doctors are running on their own practice and supplies to do their job. First, people who want to go into the medical field have to work hard for it. For example, they spent loads and loads of hours studying to get into the program. I think it s unfair for the government to step in and try to regulate ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Education And Recidivism Essay Though there is evidence that educational programs are needed to help in reducing crime, politicians and policy makers have not really understood this finding and thereby support the programs they assume are better suited at deterring criminals. Thus, they directed funding from educational programs to other areas, such as in security and anger management or drug treatment (Batiuk et al 2005). Furthermore, studies have shown that those inmates that are released from prison, about two thirds of them end up being re incarcerated within three years of their release (Klein et al 2004). As a result, when these policy makers ignore empirical research and findings and set up own policies, they are setting up the offenders for failure and anyone else affected by the policies, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However most of the research did in fact have controls for some of these risk factors indicated above, thereby reducing structural inequalities that may be there in crime occurrence (Lori 2015). If there is no control on these risk factors, it can be said that there is a correlation but no causation between correctional education and recidivism, which is what most policymakers argue (Lori 2015). Public opinion also has a big impact on political will and what policies will be implemented and how. Thus, empirical research is more or less useless as it is hard to influence public opinion just by data (Latessa 2004). This can be seen historically, asin 1994, a law was signed in US called the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act (VCCLEA) which was the one of the main reasons of budget cuts of towards correctional education. VCCLEA allowed funding from the education programs to be used in other departments (Brazell 2009) and thus slowly correctional education programs were dying ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 39. Essay about Sweatshops Written over 50 years ago, was a declaration made, promising equality and fair treatment for the working, which unfortunately turned out to be a false promise for some. The people I speak of, are our fellow human beings working in slave like conditions called sweatshops. Sweatshops have always been prevalent in society, this can be shown by looking at the history of sweatshops. Presently organizations are failing in there strive to end sweatshops, companies are failing to abide by the moral code (apparel industry code), there is an ever growing gap between rich and poor, and consumers are continuing to buy the companies products and remain unaware. UNITE is helping workers form unions to get the fair labor conditions they deserve. They have rallied for things like The New York City Council passes anti sweatshop legislation for City uniforms. (Ref 1). They have training programs and give many good ideas towards making a statement, and things we as people can do to help. The United Students Against Sweatshops (or USAS), is an international student movement that involves individual students from campuses all over America and Canada fighting for sweatshop free labor conditions and workers rights. The University of Toronto has it s own version of this, and offers ideas on how you can start your own group (refer to appendix A). NO Sweat offers the most out of all these organizations. They have reports on garment enforcement going back to 1995. Although it mainly focuses on sweatshop conditions for American workers, it s making the most difference, probably because they are so close to home.
