Classical Conditioning And Operant Conditioning
In this booklet you will find an overview of all the different approaches to psychology. This will
consist of the key assumptions, examples of the relevant psychologists and examples of their work, as
well as an exploration into the advantages and disadvantages that some of these approaches possess.
Behaviourism is a theory of learning based upon the idea that all behaviours are attained through
conditioning. Behaviourists believe conditioning occurs when we interact with the environment and
that the environment we are in determines the way we respond to a stimulus. The behaviourist
approach believes we learn behaviours through association between response and consequence. For
instance, by touching a hot iron you will feel pain. Therefore, we learn from this, and know not to
touch a hot iron as we associate feeling pain as a consequence of this action. There are two forms of
conditioning within the behaviourist approach; classical conditioning and operant conditioning.
Behaviourists believe that individuals are born without built in mental content, known as a blank slate
and that all behaviours arise from experience or perception.
Classical conditioning says that we learn behaviours by associating the response to the stimulus. An
example of this can be found from the work of Ivan Pavlov. In the 1890s Pavlov, a Russian
physiologist, carried out some experiments with a dogs. He noticed that when a dog eats food, they
salivate: this is an unconditional response to an

African Americans And African American Culture
Based on my life experiences, the characteristics described by McNamara and Burns (2009) were
essentially consistent with my experiences and perception of the African American culture. One
common characteristic is that African Americans are much more likely to live in poverty and poverty
stricken areas than White Americans (McNamara Burns, 2009). What I have learned it is not as simple
as African Americans are poorer than White Americans. While the statement is true, it is simplistic.
There are many reasons and. causes for the disparity in wealth and income between African
Americans and White American. One explanation given by McNamara and Burns (2009) is that
African Americans lived in slavery for over two centuries in what is now the United States. This is one
cause, but to rely on this as the reason for the disparity is simplistic. Slavery was outlawed only to be
replaced by discrimination against African Americans (McNamara Burns, 2009). While the law
changed, the attitudes of people did not. No law can force how a person thinks. The attitudes of White
Americans continued to see African Americans are having less rights than White Americans
(Williams, n.d.). This was especially true in the South where in the majority of the states slavery was
legal (McNamara Burns, 2009). The attitudes and discrimination are still evident today in all areas of
life. The criminal justice system purports to be color blind when it comes to the administration of
justice,

Compare and contrast CBT and psychodynamic approaches to...
Compare and contrast CBT and psychodynamic approaches to counselling focusing particularly on
trauma and PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder): Theory and therapy. When working with clients in
today s society it s extremely important to take into consideration the specific needs of each
individual. Serious contemplation is given to the approaches and methods regarding the client s need
and presenting matters. Trauma appears in many forms in society, even from the 1960 s due to the
impact on returning soldiers from war. Since this, trauma has been categorised and widely researched
leading to numerous theories. Psychotherapies were one of the first approaches to be founded in the
1970 s, which were the foundations to counselling ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This treatment approach is based on cognitive and learning theories, tackling misleading beliefs
related to the traumatic events of acknowledgments related to the abuse and provides a supportive
environment of which individuals are encouraged to talk about their traumatic experience. A numerous
amount of research has been carried out to investigate into how effective CBT really can be for PTSD.
(Resick et al, 2002) carried out an investigation comparing CBT with strong cognitive restructuring
focus and CBT with a strong exposure focus and to a waiting list control of rape survivors. Prior to
this experiment approximately 80% of patients who completed either form of CBT no longer met the
criteria for PTSD. Once this investigation was complete a follow up treatment took place of which it
was noted 2% of the waiting list group had lost the PTSD diagnoses. Only a year after this
investigation Bryant, Moulds, Guthrie, Dang Nixon, (2003) restructured the experiment comparing
exposure alone, exposure plus cognitive restructuring, and supportive counselling in civilians with
PTSD resulting from various traumatic events. At this particular follow up 65 80% of participants who
either completed either form of CBT were now clear of PTSD diagnosis, compared to less than 40%
of those who completed supportive counselling.

Intrinsic Value And Extrinsic Value Essay
In philosophy, things, properties, and acts contain values. They would fall into three categories of
value: intrinsic value, extrinsic value, and both intrinsic and extrinsic value. Things containing
intrinsic value means people value those things with intrinsic value for its own reason (Zimmerman).
In contrast, things containing extrinsic value means the value of these things are depending on other
things but not by itself. This is the basic difference between intrinsic value and extrinsic value. In
addition, knowledge is extrinsic valuable in general, but some kinds of knowledge can also be intrinsic
valuable. Also, Knowledge is more extrinsic valuable than a true belief because it provides a higher
possibility for an agent to succeed in pursuing his/her goals (Pritchard 13).
Intrinsic Value (Non Instrumental Value)
Intrinsic value has also been named as non instrumental value. The general understanding of non
instrumental value is that a thing is valuable for its own sake and its value is not related to other
things. Zimmerman explains the intrinsic value by using the example of the conversation with
someone. He says that suppose person A asks person B that whether helping people is good or not; B
will answer that helping others is good. Then, A keeps asking that why it is good; B might response
that it is just good by fulfilling others needs. After that, A can still ask B that why fulfilling others
needs is good. If B keep answering these questions by adding other

Abstract
Poliomyelitis (polio) is an infectious disease caused by the polio virus and is spread from person to
person through faecal oral transmission which means; stool entering the mouth or consumption of
food containing stool from an infection person. The poliovirus resides in the intestinal tract and mucus
in the nose and throat. Contact with infected respiratory secretions or even saliva can cause poliovirus
transmission. This mode of transmission is known as oral oral transmission. Polio became prevalent in
the United States of America (U.S) in the 1940s and 1950s.this was followed by outbreaks of the
disease that crippled tens of thousands in North America. Polio eradication is aimed at reducing the
global incidence of polio to zero through deliberate efforts to a point that it requires no further control.
Polio eradication is to be achieved through interruption of endemic transmission of poliovirus through
vaccination. This saw the wide use of the inactivated polio virus (IPV) that was administered orally
(OPV); oral polio vaccine. Polio free U.S Polio eradication is defined as the reduction to zero of
global incidence of poliomyelitis through deliberate efforts to a point that it requires no further control
measures. High rates of vaccination are at the center of polio eradication in the U.S. Vaccinations help
eradicate polio through interruption of endemic transmission

Introduction Zespri is a grower owned corporatized cooperative based out of New Zealand. The
company, which was introduced in 1997, is focused solely on delivering and marketing Kiwifruit.
Zespri was founded out of necessity by New Zealand s Kiwifruit growers after the price of kiwifruit
declined and the industry faced a disaster. Zespri is owned by 2,700 current and former kiwifruit
growers, and is governed by an eight member board elected by the shareholders. In 2008, Lain Jager

They have intellectual property protected varieties of kiwifruits and have created a global sourcing to
maintain supply year round. Kiwifruit, however, is not a trademarked product, so it is imitable. The
ability of competitors to imitate Zespri is hindered by their marketing efforts. Zespri spent over 6% of
revenues on promotion to market Zespris kiwifruit as the World s finest . On average fruit industry
spends only 0.7%. The inimitability of Zespri s trademark and the promotion of a unique brand create
sustainable competitive advantage for the company.
Non Substitutability: To compete with Zespri, competitors are cultivating their own types of kiwifruit,
which is different from Zespri s types of kiwi, such as red flesh kiwifruit. What s more, the
competitors in Italy and Chile are competing with New Zealand. These competitors supply cheaper
kiwifruit than Zespri. The firm developed several varieties of products such as Zespri Green, Gold,
and Organic in response to the competition. Also, Zespri encouraged maintaining the strict growing
standards, high standards of quality, food safety, traceability and sustainability to differentiate
themselves from other producers.
Exploitability: In terms of exploitability, Zespri is doing well using their resources, and capabilities.
Zespri promoted two way communications with growers to support transparency and to build a long

Life Is Beautiful Theme
Life is beautiful is a 1997 Italian tragicomedy drama film, directed and starring Roberto Benigni. The

captured into a jewish concentration camp, however he employed his fertile imagination, and manage
to shield his son Joshua from the horrors of the camp and sacrificed himself to ensure Joshua and Dora
his wife s survivals. The film strongly conveyed the themes of innocence and love through uses of a

Secondly, Dora s custom a red coat was the only bright color within the crowd entering the camp. This
must had been significantly designed to subtly showed the great love she has for her family in her
sacrifice with a heroic color of red. At the same time, this striking color implied her difference from
everyone else as a non jewish volunteer . Thirdly, by observing other prisoners in the room Guido and
Joshua were in, they eventually decreased implying deaths were always happening. This strongly
contrasted with Joshua s innocent views of the camp built and protected by the great love of Guido.
Also their dirty uniforms and skinny figures showed the brutal life they were going through. Guido
was samely suffering, but he acted positively and fully enthusiastically whenever talking to Joshua,
this strongly showed the his love.
The narrative elements of foreshadowing and characterization successfully made the story movingly
tragic and powerful, which conveyed the themes of love and innocence through the vivid characters.
Firstly, Guido s horse was painted in green, and labeled Jewish , his bookshop was named Jewish shop
, and with Joshua reading a sign of No jews or dogs allowed in a bakery, it was obviously

Bees have a secret life we don t know anything about. (Kidd 148). In the book August told Lily about
how bees live and how the queen bee lays eggs that become worker bees later on. This made Lily
think about herself and her life living without a mother. She realized that the queen bee is like a
mother to all the thousands of worker bees in the hive. This realization makes Lily understand that
even though she didn t grow up with her mother, doesn t mean that she could not have a motherly
figure to love her and take care of her like her mother would have. Along with the queen bee
becoming a symbol of her mother, later in the story, Lily understands that the statue of Mary in the
sisters home, also symbolizes a mother to thousands. Understanding this helps Lily accept and deal
with the trauma of her mother s death and heal her unhealed

My Father Who Lights A Pipe
Please, you should stay and not go out at night. Leave tomorrow when the sun is up. If you can hear it,
then you are still young enough to feel its power, for it is always stronger at night, the mother tells me.
I watch as she rises from her chair, still carrying her daughter, and walks up the stairs to the bedrooms,
disappearing into the shadows. I turn to the father who lights a pipe, How long has this been going on?
I ask. This has been happening for many years now, for as long as few of us remember. My great
grandfather would tell me stories of my father getting out to the woods. Back then the nightingale s
song wasn t as strong. Why has no one done anything to stop this? Has anyone tried to kill it? Have

you do not mind me asking. What exactly are you traveling for? I scratch the back of my head, I never
really questioned that myself. I just wanted to get out and experience new things, I pause for a quick
second, I guess to find myself. With a face of concern, he stands at the top of the stairs, between the
light and dark, I believe something was looking for you, he tells me before crossing into the darkness
and leaving me in silence. It is unbearable. Even in the house there is no noise. It is the silence that
drives me crazy and unsettles me. For the life of me, I cannot bring myself to close my eyelids no
matter how hard I try. I am not sure when the singing started again since I am not able to see any light
coming from the sky through the distorted window. It is the sound of footsteps, that turns my attention
away from the rippled glass, and I watch as the girl, in her slumber, walks slowly to the door and
unlocks it. Quickly, I rush from the couch and touch her arm.

Recognizing and rewarding high performance is a key recommendation for any approach when
managing any merit pay program (HRIS 2012). Merit pay is a compensation system where base pay
increases and is determined by an individual s performance. Using a merit pay plan is a good way for
an organization to reward high performance is one benefit when using merit pay programs. The first
step in implementing or improving a merit pay program is to have a solid performance management
program, and this is another way a merit pay program is beneficial. Merit pay is a way to be successful
and effectively implement merit pay with a uplift in salaries, and this is a third way using a merit pay
program is beneficial to an organization. There are some drawbacks when using merit pay programs,
such as paying some employees more than others. If you pay high performing workers more than low
performing employees, the high performers may stay, causing the low performers to complain or leave
the organization. A second drawback in using merit pay program is that employees become less
motivated if not paid to their satisfaction. For example, if employees feel they should be making more
money for their performance, this causes them to have low self esteem, and want to find employment
at other organization. The last drawback associated with

In each of Flannery O Connor s stories there is a very different perspectives in the stories also in the
different time periods. Each of these women bring a very different look on life. This is not always a
good thing. We see that some of these women only want to dwell in the past, to never move forward,
always hoping to move backwards instead. They are still living in the past because the present and the
future seem scary. O Connor introduces Mrs. Hopewell, the Grandmother, and Julian s Mother who
are main characters in her stories. Each of these women believe in something that does not exist
anymore. O Connor does not allow us the privilege of knowing their first name or even much about
these ladies. Each of these women show people their southern take on the world which conveys an
extremely patronizing attitude on life. Their world is changing and if they wanted to they could have
grabbed ahold of it. They have a chance to explore these new changes although they seem unwilling.

Assess The Impact Of Globalization On The Chinese Economy
Globalization is a process that refers to the increased integration between different countries and
economies as well as the increased impact of international influences on all aspects of life and
economic activity. Over the last 50 years, globalization has had a tremendous impact on the Chinese
economy. The impacts brought forth by globalization can be both positive and negative and effect both
economic performance, economic growth and the development of China s economy. Globalization is
the main factor responsible for China s significant growth that has taken place over the last two
decades. However, globalization itself is not entirely responsible. The Chinese economy has also
implemented strategies which have been very effective in promoting economic growth and
development. These strategies include the implantation of Open door policy , Reformation of China s
agricultural system and joining the World Trade Organisation.
The impact of globalization on the Chinese economy can be seen through the increase in economic
performance. Over the last two decades, the Chinese economy has experienced significant economic
growth due to globalization. Globalization is responsible for reducing the barriers to trade and
increasing the integration between different countries and economies. The reduction of trade barriers
as well as the increased integration between different countries and economies resulted in an increase
in foreign investment and international trading which leads

Synthesis Tom Regan, Carl Cohen, Peter Singer Animal rights are one of the most controversial issues
today. There has been endless debate about whether or not animals have rights. Philosophers attempt
to come up with the moral conclusions by taking in account the many different standpoints and
presenting their related arguments. In his essay The case of animal rights , Tom Regan, a professor of
philosophy at North Carolina State University, defends his view that the center of our moral concern
should not bring the suffering on animal as well as treating animals in a certain way. In other words,
we should treat animals as if they are our property. We should only use them to benefit us and hurting
them is an action that is not morally ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He thinks we must at least treat animals humanely, but this does not mean we need to treat them as if
they have rights. He also compared the differences between animals with brain damaged persons,
senile or young in terms of the ability to make claim which is essential to being a person. That s why
these people are still part of our moral community, but animals are not. Moreover, he strongly supports
to the increasing in the use of animals for medical experiments. He agrees that we actually need to
increase the number experiments to avoid risking human lives because the increase in longevity ,
decrease in pain , the significant numbers of lives saved , the quality of human life all depends on such

Descriptive Essay On Dance
Bryan is a free spirit type‒all smiles and full of life. Despite his teaching position, he was one of the
youngest of the guys there at 21 years old. Having danced for nearly 6 years and teaching for 3, he has
found his place in dance more than anywhere else. It s a really great outlet for self expression, and its
something you can do when you grow older, he laughed. I just love the stylization and personality you
can infuse into your dancing. Chairs lining the entryway were quickly filled with personal belongings.
Although it served as an informal changing area, the most well prepared students came already
dressed with the necessary dance items in their bags. The dark colored outfits were especially
important. Not only did the class looked unified, but it also gave each student an expressive and
distinguishable style. Despite the routine of bringing these items, sweat towels, yoga mats, and other
items were available for the students to borrow from if they forgot their own. One student, in
particular, Anna, seemed to struggle with the simple weekly ritual of remembering her belongings. As
the students unrolled their yoga mats on the dance floor, Anna ran off to the bathroom to change and
scoured the designated lockbox in search of a mat she liked. Although Anna did not comply with the
standard behavior of the subculture, Bryan did not expect all of the students to be equally familiar
with the pre class routine. Anna was obviously the most recent addition to the class,

near you, you can find places to eat out. Here s what you do. First, simply think of a restaurant you
would like to eat at. Second, go on their website to read up on their menu. More and more restaurants
are providing information on their websites about how they prepare their food and which items are
gluten free. As you re looking at your favorite restaurant s website, if you don t see any info about
gluten free items, chances are good that they don t have anything gluten free. Here s the thing, though,
give them a call and ask them about how they prepare their food. If you notice a menu item that doesn

The Self Through Self Examination
Betterment of the self through self examination seems like a fundamental idea; however, what occurs
more often than not in today s social media driven climate is not examining oneself, but instead,
comparing oneself to others. Which do you think is more beneficial? It s much easier to make
assumptions about the other and compare yourself to your own idea of the other, rather than look
inward and try to see past the assumptions of yourself and find your inner truth. It s not easy to resist
the idea of rating yourself in comparison to others since it is in human nature to want to place yourself
within a system of cultural values in order to determine your position in a cultural matrix. This kind of
comparison is mentally taxing, socially ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To shift the examination inward towards the self is the only way we could hope to understand our
placement in our nation s grand cultural matrix.
One of the most difficult things that we can do in a culture that is so surrounded by judgment is to not
accept these judgments placed on ourselves, as well as others, as finite. Values placed on yourself by
others reduces you to a statement, to words, to a sporadic thought that was devised in the mind of the
other. When we accept other s judgments as fact, we have devalued our own judgments which brings
up the interesting concept of being able to justly judge yourself. To define one s eyes is almost
impossible since we see differently day to day. It is difficult to do yourself justice with a heavy and
sure gavle that judges harshly. When we leave the self inappropriable and admit that we can t know
ourselves, let alone the other, entirely, we may not feel satisfied; however, it s imperative to admit our
lack of understanding of ourselves, so we can continue to define ourselves. When we accept the
judgment of others as fact we are in turn being lethargic by not interrogating our ever changing selves.
It is true the inability to define oneself fully is a miracle; it is true that knowing yourself fully would
leave no room for further discovery, but is it a gift never to know oneself fully? That is one question
that we will never know the answer to. To properly interrogate yourself is to learn how to appreciate
yourself

The Power And Influence Of Gospel Music On The American...
The Power and Influence of Gospel Music on the American Civil Rights Movement
For centuries, Gospel music has influenced and promoted African American social, moral and ethical
values, playing an imperative role in modelling their past and future. Originating from the hardships of
slavery and the strength of Christian worship, Gospel music has adapted to musical tastes through the
development of a number of sub genres, while retaining its moral and spiritual framework.
Throughout its musical history, Gospel music has had a profound and predominant influence on its
devotees and followers. During the turbulent years of the American Civil Rights Movement, Gospel
music played a vital role in building the foundations of stability and ... Show more content on

As Gospel music has a complex and diversified history, there are several forms of the genre, many of
which intertwine with Soul (Gospel s secular counterpart), Blues and Jazz. Consequently, although
adaptable and broadly defined, Gospel s all embracing musical lesson of spiritual contemplation and
persistence, has always been a constant reminder for its enthusiasts.
Born in New Orleans, in 1911, Mahalia Jackson, Gospel s leading ambassador and advocate, grew up
in a conservatively religious family, with church music playing a prominent role in her early years. At
age sixteen, Jackson met the Gospel composer and arranger, Thomas A. Dorsey, who co wrote her first
hit, Move up on a Little Higher , sold over eighteen million copies. Heavily involved in the civil rights
movement in the 1950s and 60s, Jackson was renowned for her energetic passionate vocal ability and
style, singing with deep conviction. Close friend and passionate civil rights activist, Dr. Martin Luther
King, described Jackson s contra alto sound as, A voice like this one comes not once in a century, but
once in a millennium (New Encyclopaedia, 2017). One of her famous adaptations, was the originally
Negro spiritual, How I Got Over , which was sung before Martin Luther King s famous Washington

The Hindu Faith is an indigenous theology and philosophy...
The Hindu Faith is an indigenous theology and philosophy of India spanning thousands of years.
Reincarnation is the center of the Faith, the teaching that all things become unified through living
many lives. After each cycle of life, karma decides which caste or level of life a person will next
experience. Lying, cheating scumbags, who were greedy and did not assist the poor could be
reincarnated upon death into a life of poverty and illness. With a little hope, such a soul would learn a
valuable lesson and the next time around would be a bit more comfortable. Some Hindus also believe
that a human can be reincarnated as an animal. Whether that is karma from a good or bad previous
life, one can only guess.

Atharvaveda Verses that speculate on the earth human connection and other philosophical ideas.
Hymns throughout the Rigveda are referred to as Samhitas. Brahmanas are textual verses that explain
ritual prayers and relay instructional information. Aranyakas and Upanishads propose speculative
theologies and philosophical concepts. Long practiced traditions and cultural behaviors determine the
specific school of philosophy each Hindu will follow. Six major schools of philosophy exist within
Hinduism. Each school, or Darśana, is separate from the others, but they are all centered on verses in
the Vedas. Sage Kapila orally addressed the natural and spiritual worlds in the Samkhya School
founded in the 6th century BC. It is the most ancient Hindu school of Hindu thought. Nyaya is the
school of logical thought introduced by Aksapada Gautama in approximately the 5th century BC. The
philosophy stresses the importance of knowledge and scientific theory. Vaisheshika, the atomic school,
instituted by Sage Kannada in the 3rd century BC, attempts to answer questions surrounding the
creation of the universe and the connection between life sustaining substances and the soul. The
philosophy states that Brahman instills consciousness in all atoms, the smallest form of life. Sage
Patanjalt, founder of the Yoga school in the 2nd century BC, proposed that mastering Yoga could
transform the physical and spiritual self. The Yoga school and Samkhya are closely related
philosophies.

Norman Bowie s The Land Ethic
According to Wikipedia a land ethic is a philosophy that seeks to guide the actions when humans use

Norman Bowie believes that businesses have no special obligation to the environment except those
defined by the law. And dolphins should be considered to be non human persons as they are highly

Asian American Assimilation Into American Society
From Chinatown to Monterey Park, Asian Americans across the boundaries of Los Angeles are
flourishing from bustling inner cities to middle class suburbia. The suburban life style was originally
created by white Americans for white Americans however in today s suburban cities and towns there
seems to be a substantial group of Asians and Asian Americans thriving in these once predominately
white areas(Li 1993, 318). The development of Asians and Asian Americans in the suburbs occurred
through the following three ways, first is the development of Chinatown and how it became the Mecca
for immigrants and the second is Asian American assimilation into American society. The last reason
is the gentrification of towns such as Chinatown, and Little Tokyo. The development of Chinatown
first began with the many Chinese immigrants that appeared in the United States. Because of the
Transcontinental Railroad, many Chinese immigrants were paid laborers working on the project and
were thought of by employers as reliable laborers who would work, without complaint, even under
strenuous conditions(Norton 1924, 283 296). Chinese immigrants came in waves because of the grand
opportunity. These immigrants were paid significantly lower wages than white workers, then blamed
Chinese laborers for lashing down pay and taking away jobs. After the railroad was completed and
white laborers in other industries began to fear for their jobs, anti Chinese attacks increased, including

Viability Of Recycling Aluminum Lab Report
The Viability of Recycling Aluminum
Seth Smith*, David Fahey, Experiment 4, CHEM 111 520
Introduction
In this experiment, metathesis, redox, single displacement, and decomposition reactions were
observed and recorded to follow the path of recycled aluminum. The percent yield of the aluminum
was also calculated to compare the actual yield with the theoretical yield. The entire concept of
aluminum recycling was also observed and successfully reproduced.
Materials and Methods
The experiment began with the measurement of 0.9300 g of aluminum pieces. The aluminum pieces
were then placed inside a 250 mL beaker along with 50 mL of 1.4 M KOH solution and a stirring bar.

This is characteristic of a redox reaction. The fumes that were a product of the reaction were sucked
away by the vacuum apparatus. Ten minutes into heating and stirring, the color of the mixture changed
from a cloudy grey, to a very dark grey color, and finally to a black, murky color. When the mixture
was filtered through the aspirator, the filtered content was much lighter in color and clearer in
appearance due to the dark residue being filtered out. Next, the 20 mL of 6.0M sulfuric acid was
added to the filtered solution and a chemical reaction occurred.
2 KAl(OH)₄ (aq)+H₂SO₄ (aq)→ 2 Al(OH)₃ (s)+K₂SO₄ + 2 H₂O (l)
The metathesis reaction that occurred was partially neutralized by sulfuric acid. The solution was
filtered after the reaction and heated to prevent solids from forming. After heating and filtering the
product, another metathesis reaction occurred:
2 AL(OH)₃ (s) + 3 H₂SO₄ (aq) → Al₂(SO₄)₃ (aq) + 6 H₂O (l)
In this third reaction, the aluminum hydroxide was neutralized by the sulfuric acid. The solution was
submerged in an ice bath which caused the alum crystals to precipitate. The following chemical
equation represents the changes that occurred when the solution was submerged in the ice

The Effect Of Temperature Affect The Metabolic Rate Of...
I. Introduction
Temperature can greatly affect the metabolic rate of Carassius auratus auratus (goldfish). Carassius
auratus auratus(goldfish) are native to eastern Asia and was first discovered by the Chinese. Unlike
homoiotherm, Carassius auratus auratus(goldfish) are ectothermic, which means they adjust to their
surrounding temperature. In this lab, the dependent variable is the rate of breath per 15 seconds and
the independent variable is the temperature in Celsius. Since Carassius auratus auratus are ectothermic
then their metabolic rate must go up as the temperature increase and goes down when the temperature
decrease.
II. Method
The material needed to recreate this lab is one goldfish in a cup big enough for the fish to swim in, a
bowl filled with water, one cup of ice, and one thermometer. Place the cup with the goldfish into the
bowl filled with water. Measure the temperature of the water in the bowl with the thermometer to find
the room temperature and after when you added the ice to cool the water down. The room temperature
should be around 20 degrees Celsius. Wait for 3 minutes for the goldfish to adjust to the environment.
Count the number of breaths of the goldfish per 15 seconds by counting the number of times when the
gill cover open and close. Slowly added the ice to the bowl to cool down the water temperature.
Repeat the process for 20 degrees Celsius, 17.5 degrees Celsius and 10 degrees Celsius.
III. Result
As the temperature gradually decreases, the

John Locke s Theory Of Perception And Knowledge
In his work A Treatise Concerning the Principles of Human Knowledge (1710), George Berkeley is
presenting a theory of perception and knowledge which is both a counter to and development of John
Locke s own theory as set out in An Essay Concerning Human Understanding (1689). Both Locke and
Berkeley are empiricists, that is to say that they believe that all important truths and knowledge can be
found out through attention to the senses and as such, having a valid theory of perception is crucial to
them and their work. However, their theories are very different. Locke devised a causal theory of
perception, that sense data that we receive from the outside world then causes us to have ideas of
objects and it is these ideas that we perceive. Berkeley, on the other hand, has a theory called
subjective idealism which will be discussed here.
In any piece of epistemological work it is vital that we know what is meant by knowledge . At the start
of his work, Berkeley explains knowledge by saying that it is all ideas which are formed through: the
input of sense data; a consideration of one s own thoughts, feelings and mental processes; or using one
s memory and/or imagination to bring together, split apart or change in some way that which has
already been perceived. When certain ideas are experienced together on multiple occasions these ideas
are then brought together to form a whole which is then known as a certain kind of thing.
Berkeley then goes on to say that there must also be

Reducing Emission from Deforestation and Forest Degradation
Reducing Emission from Deforestation and Forest Degradation
(REDD) Program Equity and Effectiveness
Introduction
Reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD) is a program that, like its name
suggests, has the main objective of reducing the emission levels of green house gases from land uses,
through incentives in developing countries. The program includes measures related to conservation,
sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forests carbon stocks (United Nations
Framework Convention on Climate Change 2008).
It is well known that climate change is one of the most controversial environmental issues that has
been discussed, and in the climate change picture REDD is a topic which contains diverse points and
dimensions that request attention. The REDD program includes goals that are seen by many people
how extremely important and essential ones to address the climate problem, whereas other
environmentalists may put in doubt its efficiency and feasibility. Given its potential importance to the
global climate and its complexity, it is necessary consider biophysical, social and economic
magnitudes of REDD.
REDD is an initiative with a variety of features. It does not involve only local management and
impacts, but rather does include a global effort and integration of public and private sectors. It is
important to think about all the management levels, all impacts and consequences of the program,
risks, applicability, benefit and cost and so

For example, Waddel et al (2007) see diversity as differences among people in age, gender, race,
ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, socioeconomic background and capabilities/disabilities.
Schwind, Das, and Wagar, (2007, cited in Panaccio Waxin 2010) categorise those differences by
Waddel et al as core dimensions of diversity. Moreover, Schwind, Das, and Wagar (2007 cited in
Panaccio Waxin 2010) also add secondary dimensions of diversity which include education, status,
language, income levels, etc. Nevertheless, McMahon (2010), Burgess, French and Strachan (2010, p.
78) argue that diversity itself remains an unclear concept.
2.2 Approaches to Managing Diversity
There are many approaches to managing diversity. According to Burgess, French, and Strachan
(2010), there are two main approaches to managing diversity, namely productive diversity which is
based on business case for diversity management and valuing diversity which is based on human
resource or organisational development approach. However, O Leary and Weathington (2006) believe
that organisations must go beyond the business case for diversity management if they want to use the
existing diversity effectively. In addition, according to Das (1998, cited in Panaccio and Waxin 2010),
there are 4 steps in managing diversity. They are the identification of current and ideal future state, the
analysis of present systems and procedures, the changing of policies, procedures, and

Victor Frankenstein As A Hero
Although some critics view Victor Frankenstein as a Tragic Hero because of his one essential flaw, his
overambitious desire to discover what cannot be known, he is truly a Byronic Hero by definition.
Although Victor is of a higher social class than the average person and his essential flaw triumphs all
of his others, he has a deeply troubled past, struggles with integrity, secludes himself away from
society, and is a willful individual who seeks redemption by carving out his own path. Victor s many,

with happiness. His troubled past started the day Elizabeth caught scarlet fever, delaying his departure

destruction of a dear bond by an irreparable evil surely would have caused anyone to suffer, but as
time came, Caroline s death became rather an / Indulgence than a necessity (Shelley 45) to Victor; it

You can also define the skill as your ability to change the actions or behaviors of other people, or to
encourage the actions and behaviors of others.
In a business setting this would be a manager s ability to get his employees to do their work more
efficiently; in a relationship this would be the influence to gain compromise from your partner,
siblings or children.
In the public this would be your ability to negotiate with strangers and foreigners, to get out of bad
situations or simply to negotiate better positions for yourself.
How the skill could be useful in business
In the work environment you do not always have the decision making autonomy that you need to
make your ideas a priority so the ability to persuade others to endorse or advocate for your ideas is a
valuable skill. When you re working with others, if you ever take on too much work it would be great
to be able to persuade your coworkers to assist you. You may even need to persuade your supervisors
or shareholders to give you more time instead of putting you under more pressure.
If you are responsible for training customer facing employees in your organization not only do you
have to be able to persuade them you need to be able to teach them persuasion in how to work with
your organization s customers. You may also need to persuade coworkers and employees to get them
more motivated and focused on their work.

There was also moral and cultural disapproval of early LGBT rights movements, such as nazi and neo
nazi groups, that made it difficult for growth within the gay rights movement to arise. As soon as the
Nazis gained control in Europe, they set the Institut für Sexualwissenschaft, a group devoted to help
gays become free, on fire ( Gay ). Because of the Nazis great dislike for homosexuals, they began to
treat all homosexuals horribly by sending them to concentration camps which lead to a complete halt
of progress for the gay rights movement ( Gay ). However, even after World War Two, Nazi groups
still managed to spread their biased views. Neo Nazi groups, people who believe in nazi like concepts
subsequent to World War 2, began to form across ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Starting in the mid 1900s, many homosexuals were forced to go into jail or lose their jobs or even
custody over their own children simply for being a homosexuals since gays were considered being
sick, or a criminal ( Gay ). A few people considered homosexuality to be a sickness that could be
treated with a special type of therapy. This therapy was called reparative therapy, a therapy designed to
alter homosexual individuals to become heterosexuals. The therapy was based off the concept that
homosexuality is a behavioral issue or illness that needs to be cured (Morris). In the 1960s, many gays
faced the possibility of psychiatric lockup where they would be put through horrible circumstances to
cure the illness that they were facing ( Gay ). Although for a majority of the 1900s homosexuality was
seen as an illness that needed to be cured, it was also seen as a mental issue that caused those
diagnosed to perform preposterous activities. For example, not only was the idea that homosexuals
were prostitutes and child molesters introduced, but also even the idea that homosexuals were
murdered because of their mental illness (Newman). Also, in the earlier 1900s, some Americans began
to see that those who participated in homosexual behavior as illegal drug users (Newman). Since
homosexuality was seen as a illness and mental problem, the early LGBT rights movement had

Ray Bradbury s A Sound Of Thunder
Time Travel in Ray Bradbury s A Sound of Thunder Although the story A Sound of Thunder is a good
one, it can be very hard to actually believe it because of the way they time travel back to the past .The
claim that Ray Bradbury s A Sound of Thunder portrays the realistic aspects of his story believably is
incorrect because in Source B, Einstein showed the speed of light is infinite meaning you could never
go back in time, and Source A, when the author talks about how impacting the past might not even
have an affect on the future. The first source uses Einstein s theory of the speed of light to justify the
claim. In Source B, it says Einstein also showed that traveling at or faster than the speed of light is
impossible because mass at these speeds becomes infinite. Einstein says that in order to go back in
time, one must go faster than the speed of light. In this quotation, Einstein also says that to go faster
than the speed of light is infinite, so traveling back in time becomes impossible. This goes against the
claim that Bradbury s story is believable, because if time travel to the fast is impossible, how could his
characters even go back in time to kill the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the story, Bradbury s characters talk about how stepping on a mouse could cause Queen Elizabeth
to never be born or the Great Pyramids to never be built. In Source A, the author says that physicists
disagree that someone traveling into the past could have any impact on the unfolding of events, and
that physicists think there has to be some self consistency. This completely goes against what happens
in Bradbury s story, where the killing of the butterfly changes the outcome of the president, and the
language becoming unreadable. If the earth truly has self consistency, then the butterfly wouldn t
change those outcomes, and makes the story harder to actually

  • 2. Classical Conditioning And Operant Conditioning In this booklet you will find an overview of all the different approaches to psychology. This will consist of the key assumptions, examples of the relevant psychologists and examples of their work, as well as an exploration into the advantages and disadvantages that some of these approaches possess. Behaviourism is a theory of learning based upon the idea that all behaviours are attained through conditioning. Behaviourists believe conditioning occurs when we interact with the environment and that the environment we are in determines the way we respond to a stimulus. The behaviourist approach believes we learn behaviours through association between response and consequence. For instance, by touching a hot iron you will feel pain. Therefore, we learn from this, and know not to touch a hot iron as we associate feeling pain as a consequence of this action. There are two forms of conditioning within the behaviourist approach; classical conditioning and operant conditioning. Behaviourists believe that individuals are born without built in mental content, known as a blank slate and that all behaviours arise from experience or perception. Classical conditioning says that we learn behaviours by associating the response to the stimulus. An example of this can be found from the work of Ivan Pavlov. In the 1890s Pavlov, a Russian physiologist, carried out some experiments with a dogs. He noticed that when a dog eats food, they salivate: this is an unconditional response to an ... • 3. African Americans And African American Culture Based on my life experiences, the characteristics described by McNamara and Burns (2009) were essentially consistent with my experiences and perception of the African American culture. One common characteristic is that African Americans are much more likely to live in poverty and poverty stricken areas than White Americans (McNamara Burns, 2009). What I have learned it is not as simple as African Americans are poorer than White Americans. While the statement is true, it is simplistic. There are many reasons and. causes for the disparity in wealth and income between African Americans and White American. One explanation given by McNamara and Burns (2009) is that African Americans lived in slavery for over two centuries in what is now the United States. This is one cause, but to rely on this as the reason for the disparity is simplistic. Slavery was outlawed only to be replaced by discrimination against African Americans (McNamara Burns, 2009). While the law changed, the attitudes of people did not. No law can force how a person thinks. The attitudes of White Americans continued to see African Americans are having less rights than White Americans (Williams, n.d.). This was especially true in the South where in the majority of the states slavery was legal (McNamara Burns, 2009). The attitudes and discrimination are still evident today in all areas of life. The criminal justice system purports to be color blind when it comes to the administration of justice, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Compare and contrast CBT and psychodynamic approaches to counselling focusing particularly on trauma and PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder): Theory and therapy. When working with clients in today s society it s extremely important to take into consideration the specific needs of each individual. Serious contemplation is given to the approaches and methods regarding the client s need and presenting matters. Trauma appears in many forms in society, even from the 1960 s due to the impact on returning soldiers from war. Since this, trauma has been categorised and widely researched leading to numerous theories. This treatment approach is based on cognitive and learning theories, tackling misleading beliefs related to the traumatic events of acknowledgments related to the abuse and provides a supportive environment of which individuals are encouraged to talk about their traumatic experience. A numerous amount of research has been carried out to investigate into how effective CBT really can be for PTSD. (Resick et al, 2002) carried out an investigation comparing CBT with strong cognitive restructuring focus and CBT with a strong exposure focus and to a waiting list control of rape survivors. Prior to this experiment approximately 80% of patients who completed either form of CBT no longer met the criteria for PTSD. Once this investigation was complete a follow up treatment took place of which it was noted 2% of the waiting list group had lost the PTSD diagnoses. Only a year after this investigation Bryant, Moulds, Guthrie, Dang Nixon, (2003) restructured the experiment comparing exposure alone, exposure plus cognitive restructuring, and supportive counselling in civilians with PTSD resulting from various traumatic events. At this particular follow up 65 80% of participants who either completed either form of CBT were now clear of PTSD diagnosis, compared to less than 40% of those who completed supportive counselling. ... • 5. Intrinsic Value And Extrinsic Value Essay In philosophy, things, properties, and acts contain values. They would fall into three categories of value: intrinsic value, extrinsic value, and both intrinsic and extrinsic value. Things containing intrinsic value means people value those things with intrinsic value for its own reason (Zimmerman). In contrast, things containing extrinsic value means the value of these things are depending on other things but not by itself. This is the basic difference between intrinsic value and extrinsic value. In addition, knowledge is extrinsic valuable in general, but some kinds of knowledge can also be intrinsic valuable. Also, Knowledge is more extrinsic valuable than a true belief because it provides a higher possibility for an agent to succeed in pursuing his/her goals (Pritchard 13). Intrinsic Value (Non Instrumental Value) Intrinsic value has also been named as non instrumental value. The general understanding of non instrumental value is that a thing is valuable for its own sake and its value is not related to other things. Zimmerman explains the intrinsic value by using the example of the conversation with someone. He says that suppose person A asks person B that whether helping people is good or not; B will answer that helping others is good. Then, A keeps asking that why it is good; B might response that it is just good by fulfilling others needs. After that, A can still ask B that why fulfilling others needs is good. To shift the examination inward towards the self is the only way we could hope to understand our placement in our nation s grand cultural matrix. One of the most difficult things that we can do in a culture that is so surrounded by judgment is to not accept these judgments placed on ourselves, as well as others, as finite. Values placed on yourself by others reduces you to a statement, to words, to a sporadic thought that was devised in the mind of the other. When we accept other s judgments as fact, we have devalued our own judgments which brings up the interesting concept of being able to justly judge yourself. To define one s eyes is almost impossible since we see differently day to day. It is difficult to do yourself justice with a heavy and sure gavle that judges harshly. When we leave the self inappropriable and admit that we can t know ourselves, let alone the other, entirely, we may not feel satisfied; however, it s imperative to admit our lack of understanding of ourselves, so we can continue to define ourselves. When we accept the judgment of others as fact we are in turn being lethargic by not interrogating our ever changing selves. It is true the inability to define oneself fully is a miracle; it is true that knowing yourself fully would leave no room for further discovery, but is it a gift never to know oneself fully? The suburban life style was originally created by white Americans for white Americans however in today s suburban cities and towns there seems to be a substantial group of Asians and Asian Americans thriving in these once predominately white areas(Li 1993, 318). The development of Asians and Asian Americans in the suburbs occurred through the following three ways, first is the development of Chinatown and how it became the Mecca for immigrants and the second is Asian American assimilation into American society. The last reason is the gentrification of towns such as Chinatown, and Little Tokyo. The development of Chinatown first began with the many Chinese immigrants that appeared in the United States. Because of the Transcontinental Railroad, many Chinese immigrants were paid laborers working on the project and were thought of by employers as reliable laborers who would work, without complaint, even under strenuous conditions(Norton 1924, 283 296). Carassius auratus auratus(goldfish) are native to eastern Asia and was first discovered by the Chinese. Unlike homoiotherm, Carassius auratus auratus(goldfish) are ectothermic, which means they adjust to their surrounding temperature. In this lab, the dependent variable is the rate of breath per 15 seconds and the independent variable is the temperature in Celsius. Since Carassius auratus auratus are ectothermic then their metabolic rate must go up as the temperature increase and goes down when the temperature decrease. II. Method The material needed to recreate this lab is one goldfish in a cup big enough for the fish to swim in, a bowl filled with water, one cup of ice, and one thermometer. Place the cup with the goldfish into the bowl filled with water. Measure the temperature of the water in the bowl with the thermometer to find the room temperature and after when you added the ice to cool the water down. The room temperature should be around 20 degrees Celsius. Wait for 3 minutes for the goldfish to adjust to the environment. Count the number of breaths of the goldfish per 15 seconds by counting the number of times when the gill cover open and close. Slowly added the ice to the bowl to cool down the water temperature. John Locke s Theory Of Perception And Knowledge In his work A Treatise Concerning the Principles of Human Knowledge (1710), George Berkeley is presenting a theory of perception and knowledge which is both a counter to and development of John Locke s own theory as set out in An Essay Concerning Human Understanding (1689). Both Locke and Berkeley are empiricists, that is to say that they believe that all important truths and knowledge can be found out through attention to the senses and as such, having a valid theory of perception is crucial to them and their work. However, their theories are very different. Locke devised a causal theory of perception, that sense data that we receive from the outside world then causes us to have ideas of objects and it is these ideas that we perceive. Berkeley, on the other hand, has a theory called subjective idealism which will be discussed here. In any piece of epistemological work it is vital that we know what is meant by knowledge . At the start of his work, Berkeley explains knowledge by saying that it is all ideas which are formed through: the input of sense data; a consideration of one s own thoughts, feelings and mental processes; or using one s memory and/or imagination to bring together, split apart or change in some way that which has already been perceived. When certain ideas are experienced together on multiple occasions these ideas are then brought together to form a whole which is then known as a certain kind of thing.
