Rabbit Proof Fence Themes
Rabbit Proof Fence
Write down a few of yours own thoughts about the film Rabbit Proof Fence. How did you react to the
film? Did you enjoy it? Why or why not?
I enjoyed the film, despite how sad it was. It brought attention to an important theme and it told the
story in an exciting, yet realistic way. The fact that it was based on a real story only made it sadder. I
believe this film should be watch by all to inform about the flaws in Australia´s legal system and the
horrors experienced by the native population.
What do you think are the film s key themes and issues?
I believe the film works as a critique of Australia´s former treatment of it´s native population. The
theme is injustice, which is shown through the difference in how white and aboriginal children were
treated. The story also deals with important issues such as growing up, responsibility and family, and
how teenagers experience these things. Especially important is the focus on the way the children have
to stand up for themselves, get out of tricky situations and face challenges children should never have
to face. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One in a few short words or phrases and another in a full paragraph commenting on its style, what the
film is about, where it is filmed, the key characters and what you learn from the film.
Rabbit Proof Fence is a film about three young girls who are taken from their family and placed at
Moore River, a settlement for Aboriginal girls, where they are given a Christian education. The girls
dislike this settlement and runs away. The remaining part of the film centres on their 2,400 kilometer

PHYSICAL EXAMINATION: Vital signs are WNL. Apparently he has had no chills, night sweats, or
favors. Generalized malaise and a lack of energy have been the main concerns. HEART: Regular rate
and rhythm with S1 and S2. No S3 or S4 is heard at this time. LUNGS: Bilateral rhonchi. No
significant amphoric sounds are noted. ABDOMON: Soft nontender. No hepatosplenomegaly or
masses are detected. RECTAL EXAM: Prostate smooth and firm. No stool is present for hemoccult
test.
DIAGNOSIS: Hemoptysis with history of tuberculosis.
PLAN: I have reviewed the chest x rays available here and agree with the finding of bleb formation in
the right and left upper lobes. Despite the fact that the patient has had a high INR, because of his
history of tuberculosis and hemoptysis I believe obtaining sputum for TB is very, very important. We
should rule out any other endobronchial lesions as the cause for his bleeding. I have discussed this
matter with the patient and his wife. I have told them that there is the possibility of observing the
condition by x rays and repeated tests of his sputum. They understand that this is an option; however,
they decided that because of concern regarding his repeated hemoptysis, they would consent to
bronchoscopy. We will arrange for the patient to have a bronchoscopy done. He is off Coumadin.

Research purpose This research aims to investigate the efficiency of using two kinds of corrective
feedback in writing, which are oral and written corrective feedback collaboratively in writing class,
whether this way of practice, compared to using only written corrective feedback, can encourage
students to more understand errors in their writings and reduce making mistakes in their further tasks
or making long term effects on accuracy of English writing.
Research question
Does cooperation between oral corrective feedback and written corrective feedback is more efficient
than using only one type of corrective feedback?
Significance of the study This study result will indicate how useful to use two types of corrective
feedback together in writing class, and to compare the result between using only one type of corrective
feedback and both types of it. It can be a practical way in teaching English writing to Thai students.

The Status of Women in China As Explained in Two Essays...
Throughout time, women have often been referred to as the inferior gender. In China, women have
had to go through dire circumstances in order to look good in the public eye. From foot binding, to
enduring abusive husbands, to becoming concubines in a prison like house, women have been through
hell in order to please their men, and, most importantly, to please their society. There are a series of
double standards and contradictions to how men and women are treated, and this is shown in both Lu
Xun and Qiu Jun s essays as well as in the film, Raise the Red Lantern. Set the scene: it is China
during the 1920s and women do not have a voice. Zoom in to a woman walking into a house that
looks like a gray prison zone. This is her new home. She ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This double standard that was placed on women is portrayed through the entire movie. For example,
Songlian was an educated woman, and there was a moment in the film when she wished to play her
flute, but, upon finding it missing, she immediately began searching for it. As it turned out, the Master
had the flute burned because he had suspected that it was from a college boy. He used the flute to keep
Songlian in her place because, at the time, women were not supposed to know how to play flutes, a
point proven when Songlian had confronted her maid and her maid simply stated, Flutes can only be
played by men (Raise the Red Lantern). However, at the end of the film, Songlian seems to come to
the realization that she is happier by herself than she is while fighting with the other wives to receive
the Master s attention. Songlian had initially lost herself to the role of a concubine, but it is shown
that, through the harshness of her realization and of witnessing the hanging of the third wife, she went
insane. She seemed to have lost all will to live because she was stuck. She could not escape this life,
and, instead of playing along, she simply gave up. In fact, Songlian lost her role as a woman by the
end. She was referred to as the Hysteric instead of a woman, a wife, or a concubine (Raise the Red
Lantern). She was simply a thing that had gone

Exchange Rate In Canada
The US and Canada share more than just a border. Professional athletes from both countries can often
be found on the other s professional football, basketball, baseball and hockey teams. For instance,
currently there are 6 teams in Canada that are currently part of US professional sports leagues. By the
year 2035 it is predicted that there could be up to 11 new teams formed(Campbell). This is beneficial
to both the US and Canada s economy because professional sports are typically profitable and draw a
lot of money. Because the teams host and employ both Americans and Canadians, some issues arise
regarding currencies. Every country in the world has a form of legal payment which is called currency.
Currency holds a particular value depending ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
23% of the teams in the NHL are Canadian and these teams generate 35% of the league s revenue.
When Canadian teams cannot produce enough revenue, the entire NHL league is affected. Baseball is
no different. For example, the Toronto Blue Jays generate an extra $600,000 for every cent the
exchange rate goes up (Exchange). In the future. the exchange rate between Canada and the US is
predicted to help the Canadian sports teams. Experts can predict with accuracy how exchange rates
will change up to two years in advance(Campbell). This allows sports teams to plan for the gap
between American dollar salaries and Canadian dollar revenues. When the exchange rate is in favor of
the Canadian dollar, more money is available to teams. This allows them to spend more on player
salaries, possibly making their teams better without having to worry as much about revenue. For teams
who are very successful in recent years, such as the Toronto Blue Jays, the exchange rate becomes less
of an issue. Even though they chose to spend more money on player salaries, the team has performed
so well that the fan loyalty and interest has gone up enough to cover the costs. The exchange rate can
also impact teams negatively. One example is the Winnipeg Jets. They eventually had to relocate to
Arizona because they could not create enough revenue selling in Canadian dollars. The Vancouver
Canucks faced a similar problem in 2002. They played their players a total of $62 million US which
exchanges to $81 Canadian. This left the team with $19 million Canadian dollars to be made up
through other ways. The NHL is the 99th most profitable business in Canada (Maich) and therefore is
highly impacted by the exchange rate. Canadian sports teams will have to make a choice between
paying their players less money or pay them more but find new ways to bring in money in order

Big Hero 6 Research Paper
The film Big Hero 6, is an animated superhero comedy movie produced by Walt Disney Animation
Studios. The movie is about Hiro, a 14 year old boy who makes an incredible invention called
microbots to try to achieve his dream of enrolling into the San Fransokyo Institute of Technology. The
microbots are tiny robots that are linked together through anyway, through a neuro transmitter.
However, trouble strikes as someone steals them, but Hiro and his deceased brother s medical assistant
robot Betamax save the day along with the other four heroes who were his brother s friends at the
institute as they capture the villain. Overall, Big Hero 6 was a very intriguing and interesting movie as

I believed that Big Hero 6 stands out from all the other Disney movies as from my evaluation through
the movie made me notice that it s characters were mostly all centered around smart human beings.
However, due to this, Disney still used a well known cliche as they still have at least one dumb
character mostly for comedic purposes. Another well known cliche in Disney movies that is seen in
Big Hero 6, is how at least one person dies in the movie whether it be during the movie, or in the
introduction. Many Disney movies play out like this to create/develop a conflict, but however it is
later resolved with a happy ending where all the characters achieve a particular goal or solve the
conflict. But most movies aimed towards kids will always have a happy ending, as they don t want to
end on a sour note. In my analysis of Big Hero 6, I saw that symbolism was conveyed throughout the
movie. One notable example, came at the expense of Tadashi, Hiro s brother, as he sacrifices his life to
try to save Callaghan. The loss of Tadashi consumes Hiro s will to learn/create or to even leave his
house. But however, it makes him depressed and wants him to take his anger/revenge out on
Callaghan who he faked his

Evaluate My Reading Process
It never occurred to me before to take some time and evaluate my reading process and my reading
habits. I ve done tons of readings throughout my whole life, including articles and abstracts for school
and just some novels and fiction books for entertainment. However, I barely paid attention at any of
my reading routine. All I was concentrated on were either getting the information I need from the text
or, in case of a novel, enjoying the plot. Up until recently I had no idea if the way I was reading is
productive or not, but after accomplishing my assignment for English class to read the texts from On
Creative Reading , I tried to look at my reading process from a different angle. I noticed that some
writing styles make it harder for me to read, concentrate and follow the idea of the text, if the writing
consists of very long phrases and is overloaded with some difficult expressions and lots of unknown
terms. On the other hand, if the author tries to keep the phrases more or less simple and clear, tries to
hold my interests and makes the whole thing easy to follow, all those things make my reading process
more pleasurable. Surely, the topic I m researching plays a prominent role in the level of pleasure I m
receiving during the reading. I m more interested in reading some articles on photography or
psychology rather than finance or physics. I would enjoy more reading some fiction than some
assignments for school. Richard E. Miller and Ann Jurecic, the authors of Habits of the Creative Mind,
point out that reading process is not the same for everyone. They ask questions like Once the process
of reading has been routinized and internalized, why is that different people reading different material
reach different conclusions? Or to put this another way, why is there ambiguity? (Miller and Jurecic
80). Indeed, after reading the same text, each of us will make different conclusions and have different
feelings about what we ve read. A lot depends on our previous knowledge and beliefs, ability to
analyze information and many other factors. I often catch myself reading about online TV shows if
they have really interesting theories and plot lines that derive from myths or other similar sources. On

Factors To Reduce Climate Change
Climate is increasing our global temperature, and we should be aware of the effects of climate change
so we are conscious about how to alter our actions to reduce it. Climate is the overall weather pattern
over a long period of time. Over the decades, climate has drastically changed. There are several key
factors that contribute to how climate works. The atmosphere acts a greenhouse, trapping the carbon
dioxide and other greenhouse gasses inside, gradually warming the earth. The clouds in the
atmosphere act as a second layer trapping in the heat from water vapor, and blocking the sunlight. The
albedo of ice caps and glaciers is high meaning their reflectivity is high, however, with the melting of
ice caps, more heat is retained into the ocean rather than reflected off. Ocean currents also play a role
in climate change in the sense that the conveyor belt keeps the oceans circulating. In addition, the
Milankovitch theory which uses the earth s eccentricity, tilt, and wobble to explain the alternating
warm and cool changes. Carbon dioxide plays a significant role in the effects of climate change. The
trapping of greenhouse gasses, of which includes carbon dioxide, has overtime caused a global
warming. Since the Industrial Revolution, humankind has tripled the amount of carbon dioxide
emitted into the atmosphere(NASA, 2107). The burning of fossil fuels is a large contributor to the
emission of carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide is gradually warming the planet which affects all

Why Do We Discover Oxygen
Oxygen
Halle Bratvold
December 15th 2017
Physical Science Period 3
Abstract There are many debates on which element is the most important for this planet, but oxygen is
definitely one of the most necessary for life to survive. In order for humans, animals, and anything
living to survive, they must have oxygen. Oxygen is produced by a process called photosynthesis,
which is when plants produce glucose and oxygen by using carbon dioxide. Oxygen also makes up
about 21% of our entire atmosphere. All in all, oxygen can do many things, good, bad and otherwise.
But no matter what, it is still one of the most essential elements needed for earth to survive.
Introduction Many people underestimate how important oxygen actually is. They don t realize that
their entire survival relies on one element in more ways than one.
Background
Who Discovered It
Oxygen was discovered by two different people on two separate occasions in the same year of 1774.
The men who discovered it were Joseph Priestly and Carl Wilhelm Scheele. Joseph Priestly was born
in 1733 in Wiltshire, England. He was a very smart young child, learning six languages before he
reached high school. He also had a very large passion for chemistry. After he discovered oxygen, he
used his discoveries to invent carbonated water. Carl Wilhelm Scheele was born in 1733 in Uppsala,
Sweden. When he was 22 years old, he got a job at a pharmacy, and that spiked his interest in
chemistry, which led him to

family and its members. This family is comprised of Willy Loman, a salesman, Linda, Willy s wife
and mother of Biff and Happy, Biff, eldest son of Willy and Linda, and Happy, younger son of Willy
and Linda. Each of the characters in the book all have flaws such as Willy being suicidal, Linda being
an enabler, Biff being lost, and Happy being a liar. These flaws have created an atmosphere where
conflicts will occur time and time again. In fact, the main plot of the literary work revolves around

she knows he is an invalid husband. Willy refuses to acknowledge what he s done to the family and
when they confront him he says Spite, spite, is the word of your undoing! And when you re down and

My Critical Evaluation Of Various Components
The reflective essay will pertain to chapter 8 and my critical evaluation of various components in this
chapter. Attention is different for everyone, so ideally we all have things we play closer attention too.
When I m out and I see people who wear pink or have sparkles I tend to pay more attention that area. I
also get distracted very easily so if I am out and about and there is commotion going on I ll stop to see
what all the fuss is about. My own selective attention deals with movements, sparkly and pink objects.
If any of those apply my retina will process that for me. What types of things do you pay close
attention too? Selective attention makes me think of being at a party or some type of gathering where
you don t really know anyone. I usually make saccades of the environment. If I see someone I know or
looks familiar I will remain fixated for a couple seconds than look away. At that moment I try and
process how I recognize them. When I first saw the term dichotic listening this is what came to mind.
Whisper down the alley is what popped up in my brain. I learned this game in elementary school
where one person whispers a message into your and you pass it on to the next person. Sometimes there
were two messages that were started in both directions, than passed to each individual participating.
Whiter it is one message or two the whole point was to see if the message in the end matched the
original message. In most cases it did not, do too how we hear the message is

External factors influence a firm s choice of direction and action and, ultimately, its organizational
structure and internal processes. These factors, which constitute the external environment, can be
divided into three interrelated subcategories: factors in the remote environment, factors in the industry
environment, and factors in the operating environment... In combination, these factors form the basis
of the opportunities and threats that a firm faces in its competitive environment, (Pearce Robinson,
2004, p. 78). To create an experience unlike its competitors, Starbucks must constantly evaluate all
areas of their business while capitalizing on economies of scale and eliminating redundancies.
EXTERNAL ENVIRONMENT Starbucks can benefit from an environmental scan from the

Corrective Action for Disrespecting Higher Ranking...
This essay is on tact, professionalism, respect and disrespect, as part of my corrective action for
disrespecting higher ranking military personal. I will start this essay off with defining each of the
subjects so that the reader may have a full understanding on what each mean. Tact is the first subject
on which I am suppose to include in this essay, tact is defined as a keen sense of what to say or do to
avoid giving offense; skill in dealing with difficult or delicate situations. The second definition needed
for this essay is on professionalism; professionalism is defined as professional character, spirit, or
methods. Given that there are three main points to that definition, character is the key phrase to take
from that definition for it pertains more to this essay then spirit or methods. The third definition
needed is on respect, and the most suited definition for respect as it pertains to this essay is, deference
to a right, privilege, privileged position, or someone or something considered to have certain rights or
privileges; proper acceptance or courtesy; acknowledgment. With the definition of respect given, the
last and most important definition is disrespect. Disrespect is defined as to regard or treat without
respect; regard or treat with contempt or rudeness. Tact in my opinion is the way you handle yourself
in situations that you do not agree with or support. In the military you will face many situations that
you may not understand or agree with and the

The Looking Glass Reflection
Fantasy will always be more cherished than reality. Our imaginations give way to disappointment
when it s time to buckle down and come back to the real world. However, for Nellie this is quite the
opposite. In Anton Chekhov s The Looking Glass character development, symbolism, and diction are
used to communicate that reality upsets our expectations.
Character Development is one of the most effective tools used to communicate the overall theme of
The Looking Glass. Character Development is used in The Looking Glass to show the change of
Nellie s perspective from the beginning of her vision to the end. In this excerpt, Nellie describes what
she sees in the mirror It was he, the destined one, the object of long dreams and hopes. The destined
one was for Nellie everything, the significance of life, personal happiness, career. Nellie s filled with
new found wonder and excitement when she catches a glimpse of what she presumes to be her future
husband. In Nellie s perspective her life has always been building up to find the perfect man and that
man now stands before her in the mirror. It s apparent that not only did Nellie idolize her husband but
she s seems very naive to not consider all the bad things that come with marriage. Life will test a
relationship between wife and husband Nellie s perspective changes dramatically towards the end of
the book, She looked into the looking glass and saw a pale, tear stained face. There was no grey
background now. I must have fallen asleep, she thought with a sigh of relief. (Chekhov 7). Nellie has
seen the full preview of what her life is supposed to be and she s horrified. Nellie no longer is a victim
of her own naive complex she fully realizes that life is no picnic. The development of Nellie s
perspective of what seemed like a bright future has been shattered by the universal fact that reality
upsets expectations. We can never be certain of our future and setting up false hopes is setting yourself
up for a rude awakening to reality. Character development was instrumental to the theme because it
proves the point that our expectations for our future is not certainly not what we will receive no matter
how hard we try to work towards. Chekhov s word choice in this

Women s Female Leadership During The Renaissance
The concept of the salon, originating in Italy during the Renaissance, was introduced to France in the
seventeenth century and evolved into a three hundred year old tradition built exclusively on the
strength of feminocentric rule. One of the most fascinating things about the institution of the salon is
that its female leadership flourished during a period of history when women were not permitted to be
involved in activities outside the boundaries of domesticity. According to Wolf, this paradoxical
climate began to emerge during the Renaissance when the Salic law came into effect in fourteenth
century. This Law denied women the right to inherit the family name, fortune or property. She was
also denied the right to receive a public education. Women learned the only way to gain social status
was through marriage, conducting cultural and social functions of the court in their husband s name.
Young girls were raised to believe their primary role was to develop the attributes that would secure
marrying into the right family. The ability to sing, dance, play multiple instruments was a mark of
distinction. Music education especially for women was extremely important to those among the upper
class. Some scholars believe men imposed the study of music on women...to prevent them from
acquiring the kinds of knowledge, hence power, that men possessed. The time devoted to the study of
music developed exceptionally talented women but they were only allowed to play in

AGGREGATE PLANNING:
Aggregate planning is the process of developing, analyzing, and maintaining a preliminary,
approximate schedule of the overall operations of an organization. The aggregate plan generally
contains targeted sales forecasts, production levels, inventory levels, and customer backlogs. This
schedule is intended to satisfy the demand forecast at a minimum cost. Properly done, ... Show more

This could result in a considerable amount of hiring, firing or laying off of employees; insecure and
unhappy employees; increased inventory carrying costs; problems with labour unions; and erratic
utilization of plant and equipment. It also implies a great deal of flexibility on the firm s part. The
major advantage of a chase strategy is that it allows inventory to be held to the lowest level possible,
and for some firms this is a considerable savings. Most firms embracing the just in time production
concept utilize a chase strategy approach to aggregate planning.
Most firms find it advantageous to utilize a combination of the level and chase strategy. A combination
strategy (sometimes called a hybrid or mixed strategy) can be found to better meet organizational
goals and policies and achieve lower costs than either of the pure strategies used independently.
TECHNIQUES FOR AGGREGATE PLANNING
Techniques for aggregate planning range from informal trial and error approaches, which usually
utilize simple tables or graphs, to more formalized and advanced mathematical techniques. William
Stevenson s textbook Production/Operations Management contains an informal but useful trial and
error process for aggregate planning presented in outline form. This general procedure consists of the
following steps: 1. Determine demand for each period. 2. Determine capacity for each period. This
capacity should match demand, which

book and it is a combination of real events in his life. Matilda is one of his fictional books that he
wrote later on. Dahl uses events that are actually gruesome and quite horrifying and makes them
humorous by using sarcasm, hyperboles, short sentences, imagery, similes and juxtapositions (rose96,
2011). Dahl uses a lot of adjectives to describe the characters in his books to portray them in a
humorous way. He uses figures of speech to describe a character and to make this character unique.
Chapter 3, The bicycle and the sweet shop in Boy is a perfect example of how Dahl describes the
characters in his book. This chapter is about Boy and his friends who absolutely loves the sweet shop.
In this chapter het describes the sweet shops importance as ...the very centre of our lives. (Dahl,
1984:33). The only bad thing about this sweet shop was the lady who owned it, Mrs Pratchett. He
describes her as a small skinny old hag with a moustache on her upper lip and a mouth as sour as a
green gooseberry. (Dahl, 1984:33). Dahl uses a simile to describe her mouth and compares it to a
green gooseberry. Dahl then starts to describe how dirty she is. Her apron was grey and greasy. (Dahl,
1984:33). Here we see some alliteration of the words grey and greasy. He goes on describing how she

Planned Parenthood, is a nonprofit organization that provides reproductive health services in the U.S.
Margaret Sanger founded the American Birth Control League in 1921, which changed its name to

operates 650 health centers that conform to the communities where they are located. (Parenthood,

Planned Parenthood has been a point of conflict since the day it was opened in 1921. Sanders was
under attack for giving women birth control since she was tired of seeing women die from having too

Modern Policing Grew Out Of Private Security Concerns
Modern policing grew out of private security concerns. Crime prevention is a major issue in our
society. A greater burden is being placed on public law enforcement to respond to crisis situations. As
a result, the consumer is turning to the private security industry to help protect our communities and
businesses. Private security agencies are one of the fastest growing entities in our country. The
demand for security services is growing at stellar 6% rate a year in our post 9/11 climate. This trend
shows no sign of abating. There are many different actors within a private security firm, license
private patrol officers, private investigators, alarm company s operators, bodyguards, and executive
protection agents.
Starting a security company requires specific state and federal laws to be followed. You must possess
experience in the field, take the necessary training courses, and be responsible for training your
employees. All owners or managers of security companies must meet and maintain certain
requirements. Managers in charge of the private security related businesses must be a DCA qualified
manager. Security agencies are regularly required to complete numerous different financial statements
for a variety of reasons. Among the more common financial statements are a cash flow statement, and
a shareholder s equity statement.
In order to fully understand all concepts and strategies in starting a private security service, our paper
will touch on some of the basic points to

Dawn Of The Dread Chapter Summary
Dawn of the Dread
The Caribbean is known for its ghost stories, myths and haunted landscapes. Dawn of the Dread, by
Geoffrey Philp, was set in rural Jamaica. Being set in the high hills of mount Airy, the author
highlights the hilly and mountainous features of the Caribbean terrain. This story revealed both past
and present aspects of the Caribbean culture. It revealed notions of ghost stories, corruption, religious
practices, homosexuality and police brutality. It embodies love, Rastafarian beliefs and violence. It
revolves around the life of Darren Lee, his girlfriend Grace and Georgie. Regardless of his contrasting
beliefs, Darren was responsible for saving the town from zombies. Philp utilized the Jamaican creole
throughout this piece. All the dialects were creole, especially when Darren spoke his Rastafari way of
language expression were used. words such as Babylon , I and I Levity and Jah were used to show the

Darren mentioned running so fast not even a rolling calf could catch him. Rolling Calf is a mythical
creature which roams the place at night in the rural area with chains hanging on the ground. Darren
also mentioned his fear of waking up the duppies under her cotton tree which came from stories of
dead slaves who worked in the cotton field. These stories epitomize the mythical nature off the
Caribbean culture.
Like in the earlier years, it can be seen in this story that Christianity was the most dominant and highly
accepted religion in Jamaica. Having contrasting beliefs and practices, individuals would be shunned
and ostracized. The author illustrates this idea by showing how Darren s passionate beliefs in
Rastafarianism had resulted in him being kicked out of his house. He was told to never to come back
until he had given up that Rasta foolishness. Today, the Caribbean has become religiously diverse with
a tolerance for different

brand image their sites portray? 3. Explain how each site appeals to different segments through their
web site. Give specific examples. 4. Do these sites offer live chat? What are the advantages and
disadvantages of live chat? Analysis The brand image in both cases is localized so the Hilton name is

Localization (sometimes shortened to l10n ) is the process of adapting a product or service to a
particular language, culture, and desired local look and feel ( localization ( l10n), 2011). As the SEO
experts point out, localization is the flip side of internationalization, which allows the product or
service to be timely and useful anywhere in the world (ibid.). The Hilton is an international hotel chain
and fits the bill well. As an important bonus, the localization and internationalization features aid
greatly in SEO website optimization. It gets both local and out of town business going for the
organization (ibid.). In the case of the Hilton, Gainesville, FL, it is hooked to not just

The Cult Of Womanhood By Barbara Welter
The article, The Cult of Womanhood: 1820 1860 written by Barbara Welter discusses the philosophy
towards women in America during the mid 19th century. A set of demands and expectations based
upon four principles: piety, purity, submission and domesticity were placed on women as well as
certain behavioral expectations left 19th century women feeling guilty. It also left women feeling this
way during the industrialization period as well as having a huge presence of incompatibility with
society. Welter shares her viewpoint that the Cult of Womanhood was an attempt to preserve pre
modern values in the industrial age. Men held a dominant place in society and continued to prevent

values weakened through generations. Female education should be preeminently religious (p.182).
The woman was the primary teacher of her child and was expected to teach themselves religion and be
able to teach their children as well. One reason religion was valued was that it did not take a woman
away from her proper sphere, her home. (p. 181) Women only completed grade school and had many
opportunities to read the bible so they were also able to preach family values, help the poor and
contribute to stopping slavery. Devotion to religion was expected. Welter explains that a woman s
brain is capable of comprehending religion even though it is not visible. As the Industrial Age
progressed, the strong religious values weakened through generations. Submission, another principle,
kept women from voicing her opinion when having a discussion with their husbands or telling their
husbands to terminate an annoying idiosyncrasy. Wives were advised to do their best to reform men,

Differences Between The Colonies And England
Brinkley s contradiction exists because throughout the early 18th Century nearly all colonist
considered themselves to be loyal English subjects. Despite this, the American colonist
simultaneously, and inadvertently began to develop their own unique identity. One that wasn t
necessarily a conscious decision to be different from England, but one that was largely shaped by, as
Brinkley states, the nature of the New World (53). American colonist tried hard to maintain their
cultural Englishness, but were being shaped by environmental factors in the areas where they now
lived. This led to unique differences between the colonies and England in terms of population,
economics, and society and religion, and political ideas. These factors not only produced differences
between the colonies and England, but among the colonies themselves. Brinkley writes that, Many
distinct societies developed in the colonies, but the greatest distinction was between the colonies of
the North and those of the South (81). This resulted in the colonist not only developing their own
identity from that of England, but in many ways from each other. The same distinct factors such as
population, economics, and society and religion, and political ideas that differed between the colonies
and England, were the same factors that differed from each of the colonies. Although, while it is true
that the colonist differed from each other they were always more alike than they were with England.

Essay On The Movie Coraline
In terms of plot, the movie adaptation of Neil Gaiman s Coraline is extremely true to the source
material. It still tells the story of a young girl who grows unappreciative of her real family and finds a
magical door in her new home that leads to a better, fantastical version of the family she has now. The
creepiness and scary moments are also true to form, with this world being only a copy of the real
world, created by the Other Mother in an attempt to trap Coraline forever. The quest to rescue the
three ghost children is almost exactly the same, with two of their souls being found in Miss Spink and
Forcible s theater and Mr. B s circus. But since the movie added a scene in which an enticing garden is
used as an item to gain Coraline s trust in the Other Mother s fake world, one of the ghost souls was
placed in this location instead. Another major difference between the book and the movie is the
addition of the character Wybie. He acts as a source of inside knowledge about The Pink Palace and
helps kill the Other Mother s hand at the climax of the movie, while in the book Coraline gathered her
information about her home from her parents as well as Miss Spink and Forcible, and killed the Other
Mother s hand by tricking it rather than crushing it. The use of stop motion animation was also a
benefactor in bringing this terrifying story to a visual format, as stop motion tends to look uncanny
and unsettling at times. Both works are masterpieces of writing and storytelling, and

During those years the Klu Klux Klan was on the rise and gained a large number of followers and

advertising for the Klu Klux Klan states, Stands for.. White supremacy.. Separation of church and

to be separate but also want a bible in every classroom. These posters were prominent in the 1920 s as
well as rampant discrimination of people of colour. Even people hailed as heroes, like Susan B.
Anthony who helped women get the right to vote, actively argued against people of colour gaining the
right to vote. People of colour were denied jobs, homes, basic rights that every white citizen had. Poet
Langston Hughes deftly and sadly illustrates this point in his poem I, Too, Sing America, stating, I am

Communication Is A Form Of Symmetrical Communication
Communication can come in various forms. A person can write, speak, or even use American Sign
Language to communicate. Within communication itself, there are various styles used and ways to
receive feedback. To name a couple, two way asymmetrical and two way symmetrical communication
are two well know forms in regards to Public Relations. Asymmetrical Communication happens when
professionals seek to pursue their publics into changing their opinions about certain things. However,
this attempt is usually unequal, given that professionals use research to help them persuade their
publics. Symmetrical Communication on the other hand has a form of balance to it and can lead
publics to change their attitudes on their own.
I think that blogging is a form of symmetrical communication. Although it may seem unusual, this is
an actual form of communication. A person (both professional and non professional) is able to publish
their opinion about something and publics are able to read and/or respond by commenting. Usually
blog posts get overlooked. There are probably a million posts that have been published, but no one has
read. However, well known bloggers or blog sites, like Perez Hilton, TMZ, Mashable, and my
personal favorite, The Shade room are all somewhat reliable sources. Many of these are digital media.
These are people and/or their sites that receive a ton of feedback from their blog posts. The Shade

I Can Remember Mine With Perfect Clarity Essay
As babies most of us go through some sort of traumatic experience. Whether it be a high fever from an
illness or a near miss car wreck. Nine times out of ten we never remember these incidents, with only
stories from relatives to know that they happened. I can remember mine with perfect clarity. At the age
of one year old, one day before my second birthday, I sat in my day care with my hands leaning back
looking up at the colorful displays. While it is illegal in North Carolina to not have heavy bookshelves
mounted to the ground, this day care had chosen to forgo that rule and use them as room dividers. A
little boy on the other side of the divider with sandy blond hair shoved his backpack into the cubby,
excited to go out and play among his friends. One of the poorly taken care of wheels on the bottom of
this bookshelf collapsed toppling over onto my hand, crushing almost every bone in the process and
partially severing two of my fingers on my left hand. After 3 blood transfusions, a life flight trip to
Duke Hospital, 3 later surgeries, and careful reconstruction, I am now left with a functioning hand
albeit slightly deformed on the two severed fingers. These incredible doctors were able to save the nail
bed although my middle finger curves over somewhat bent inward along with some scarring. This is
what life would be like for me with a perfect hand for three days.

Significant Changes In Hollywood Since The 1950 s
Hollywood has been a formidable force in the film industry since the 1910 s onwards. As with any
industry that has lasted that length of time, Hollywood has gone through a few changes to deal with
the changes in technology and culture. One of the more significant changes that Hollywood has faced
since the advent of sound in films, was the fall of its Golden Era. There were a combination of reasons
the industry went through dramatic changes in the late 1950s to mid 1960s. The Paramount decree and
other government imposed limitation on power of the studios, change in audience demographic, and a
strict code system limiting the types of stories that could be told through the medium of film all

Bonnie and Clyde (1967) is often referred to as the film that began the era of New Hollywood. It s

against the restrictions of society. This film was expected to be a complete flop but, in came the teen

and the perceived freedoms they deserved, a revolutionary idea in a society where those under a
certain age were children and above it were adults. Teen culture in relation to films focused on the

How Baseball Survived the Great Depression Essays
Baseball remains today one of America s most popular sports, and furthermore, baseball is one of
America s most successful forms of entertainment. As a result, Baseball is an economic being of its
own. However, the sustainability of any professional sport organization depends directly on its
economic capabilities. For example, in Baseball, all revenue is a product of the fans reaction to ticket
prices, advertisements, television contracts, etc. During the devastating Great Depression in 1929, the
fans of baseball experienced fiscal suffering. The appeal of baseball declined as more and more people
were trying to make enough money to live. There was a significant drop in attention, attendance, and

Radio broadcasting contributed to the survival of baseball in two ways. First, radio broadcast kept
people who could not afford tickets interested in the game. Second, radio broadcasting brought in new
fans that lived far away or never could afford to attend games. Therefore, radio broadcasting was a
popular and ingenious contribution to the survival of baseball during the great depression. In addition,
the farm system was created and refined during the great depression. The farm system was a way to
cut down the expensive sums of money spent on buying new players. Lauren Vorel, who is a baseball
historian, describes the farm system by saying, The farm system allowed major league teams to
develop ballplayers in the minor league teams and draft them up to the majors, instead of having to
complete expensive trades with other major league teams for developed ball players. Because of the
farm system, baseball clubs saved money while still having valuable players. The farm system was
prosperous, and many teams began to have success from implementing the farm system. For example,
the White Sox s team was composed of many players who came from their farm system. Because the
White Sox did not trade or purchase players during this time, they saved a lot of money. There are
many more examples of the farm system s success, and it is still used today. Therefore, the farm
system was another ingenious tool that benefited

This is even the case during dinner on a Friday or Saturday night. The only exceptions to this time are
in the cases of large parties with more than six people. This was all found to be correct. Food is served

very quick to introduce themselves and accommodate you. They come right over to you in just a

ordered in just two or three minutes. Promptly they ask if a selection has been made. If no decision has

Presidents Hoover and Roosevelt s Roles in the Great...
The Roaring Twenties were a breath of fresh air after WWI, men and boys were reunited with their
families after being away. The 30s brought a new surprise though, a Great Depression that forced
every member of the family to dramatically alter their life style. The father had to take on more
responsibility because of the belief that it was their job to put and keep food on the tables. Mothers
had the difficult task of stretching every dime that the father brought in. Children had it hard too. Boys
started taking on small jobs doing just about anything to earn pocket money or money for the family.

Others, though, were ashamed that they couldn t provide for their families and left home and never

the Great Depression. Her father was too proud to admit that they family needed help and never
admitted that he was waiting in line at the soup kitchen with other people just to eat and would even
take bread or butter from the soup kitchen for the rest of the family. People like him worked multiple
jobs just to keep busy and feel like they were doing some good. Men took jobs in industrial,
mechanical, and teaching (77% of schools would only allow men to teach). Man, traditionally seen as
the main provider often felt bewildered and inadequate when they could not provide. Many employers
were looking for jobs that a men didn t like to do, so women would take over.
Many women took jobs that men did not want such as cooking, cleaning and running the household.
Women also got jobs in textile mills, working machinery that made clothing. Many women were
talented at making clothes for the family. This kept up with the latest style and was much less
expensive. With the WPA, Works Progress Administration, nearly 300,000 women were working with
approximately 9,000 different sewing units. Women were sometimes left alone to run the household
when the father left for his own reasons. It s been said that Women got all her life in her arms. Man

Characteristics In The Colonies Of America
The first characteristic in the colonies of America that can be described as democratic would be
examples of majority rule in the different facets of the everchanging governmental structures. This
characteristic can be seen in the Mayflower Compact which began from forty one separatists who
came across for religious freedom. This compact was designed by those of their religion, and was
structured as a covenant which grew into a civil government based from that original church
government. This compact allowed the group equal say in rules and law, and chose a governor and his
assistants by majority rule. The next example of majority rule also was designed from a standpoint of
a church organization. Thomas Hooker led congregations from Massachusetts Bay to Connecticut and
there organized a self governing colony. They formed what was called the Fundamental Orders which
were a series of laws that created a commonwealth based on Christianity. However, different from the
Mayflower Compact, the Fundamental Orders were voted on by all members of the community not
just church members. The best example of majority rule would be what was called the House of
Burgesses in Virginia, but under various other names in other areas, such as the House of
Representatives in Massachusetts. These structures of government were formed from elected
assemblies, where the lower houses were elected by the popular vote. These elected officials were
usually wealthy, male property owners which

developed initially at the Harvard Film School by Timothy Asch and John Marshall to represent the
daily lives of its subjects, which in turn, attempts to exhibit the ethnography of a place or culture. A
pioneering event sequence film is Marshall s an Argument About a Marriage (1969). Although the

Although it is a common practice, it is not the only way to construct an ethnographic film. In Night
Cries:a Rural Tragedy, creator Tracey Moffatt departs from traditional ethnographic realism by adding
elements of fantasy and exaggerated representation to her production. The film itself is not a live shot
documentary, but attempts to represent a different form of truth through piece of fiction with a script
and set. Despite its lack of placement in legitimate history, Night Cries still represents an ethnography.
Similarly, Leviathan (2012) does not attempt to showcase a cultural story. Using unconventional
camera shots and sci fi like effects, it exhibits an ethnography in a nonlinear way which exaggerates
its violent and haunting qualities. The producers of these films may have diverged from ethnographic
realism because traditional tendencies tend to depict ethnography as though it were stagnant and
exotic. By using contemporary and non objective forms of filmmaking, they aimed to represent a
genuine ethnographic experience, even if the genuine experience never actually occurred within the
culture s

As a result, having negative thoughts can also cause the child as well as the adolescents to act in an
inappropriate manner. In addition, they also thinks that everything that happen wrongly are usually
their fault. They also have a tendencies to criticize themselves. Furthermore, children and adolescents
with depression usually have a low self esteem and they have no confidence in whatever they do
(Lack, C. W., Green, A. L., 2009). In addition, they also have a negative view point about the world
around them, as well as their future and the future of other people around them. However, these
feelings somethings changes depending on the situations that they are in as well as the age group,
which is maturity (Lack, C. W., Green, A. L., 2009).
However, children and adolescents often times want to know that they are truly loved and wanted.
They would go to the extent by asking continuously if they are lived and wanted, even if it is shown to
them on a daily basis. The continuous assurance gives them a positive attitude. However, on the other
hand it causes the people around them that they are constantly questioning their love, to feel annoyed,
frustrated and overwhelmed. This as a result cause the children and adolescents to feel as if the
individual love is not sincere (Lack, C. W., Green, A. L.,

Thucydides Grievances
It is in this context that the four grievances of Thucydides arise. In great detail, Thucydides describes
the conflict between Corcyra and Corinth over the control of their mutual colony Epidamnus, in which
Corcyra sought aid from the naval power of Athens. He states this was the first cause of the war that
Corinth had against the Athenians, viz. that they had fought against them with the Corcyraeans in time
of treaty. (1.55) In a speech, the Corcyraeans employ Athens that helping them will put them on the
right side of history and would also be in their own self interests. In a speech, they claim there are but
three considerable naval powers in Hellas, Athens, Corcyra, and Corinth, and that if you allow two of
these three to become one, and Corinth to secure us for herself, you will have to hold the sea against
the united fleets of Corcyra and Peloponnese. (1.36) Thucydides suggests that with this consideration,
Athens went forward with assisting Corcyra. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Yet this inevitably led to them getting involved in conflict and caused strain with the agreements of
the Thirty Year s Peace. Corinth speaks you do wrong, Athenians, to begin war and break the treaty.
(1.36) The Athenian reply indicates that they believe their involvement to be just: Neither are we
beginning war, Peloponnesians, nor are we breaking the treaty; but these Corcyraeans are our allies
and we are come to help them. (1.53) From this point forward is where Thucydides identifies where
fresh differences arose between the Athenians and Peloponnesian s, and contributed their share to the
war. Corinth was forming schemes for retaliation, and Athens suspected her hostility.

Copyright Laws And Its Impact On Intellectual Property...
Introduction Copyright laws were established to provide authors with rights over their creations and to
prevent unauthorized use and distribution of these creations by others. Although the law grants
ownership to one party, usually the author of the work, there is a doctrine for granting ownership of
work made for hire to educational institutions (Crews, 2006). This doctrine supports that if the
employee developed the work under the parameters of their scope of employment or through the use
of resources provided by the employer, then the employer owns the rights to the work (Crews, 2006).
In an effort to clarify the mandates of copyright law and improve understanding of intellectual
property ownership, educational institutions have developed their own policies addressing intellectual
property ownership. The policies vary by institution, but share the same purpose of providing
guidelines and conditions for ownership of creations by the educational institution s faculty. The
University of Maryland in College Park (UMCP) promotes the development of educational materials
by faculty to provide and deliver the best education to its students. In an effort to address the law of
copyright and clarify intellectual property ownership, as well as patents and trademarks, UMCP has
developed an extensive intellectual property policy. This paper will review the policy in reference to
the law as it applies to the development of works by faculty for use in distance education programs.

Many students who participate in sports are very common to have an eating disorder such as Bulimia
Nervosa. There are different sports that it is most common in and they are usually ones with less
clothing or uniforms also. Athletes such as Gymnasts, ice skaters, ballerinas and even runners have a
very high risk of eating disorders. The effort to please people around another and to have a perfect
body and even coaches suggesting diets for a team or players can lead to eating disorders. Even sports
such as wrestling can have these disorders even though these disorders are less common in guys

Emotional Intelligence, By Daniel Goleman
In the book, Emotional Intelligence, Daniel Goleman discusses what emotional intelligence is, how it
can be achieved, and why it can matter more than your IQ. Emotional intelligence, by his definition, is
the ability to recognize and understand both our personal emotions and the emotions of others. This
also includes the ability to manage our personal emotions. He introduces us to the topic and the
history of the brain, discusses the importance of it in our lives, marriage, and business, and concludes
by suggesting it should be developed during childhood when the brain is still developing. However,
this does not mean our emotional intelligence skills cannot be sharpened and taught during adulthood.
According to Goleman, academic intelligence has little to do with emotional life (Goleman, 34) and
therefore does not correlate immensely with success. More specifically, he says IQ contributes about
20% to the factors that determine life success, which leaves 80% to other forces... ranging from social
class to luck (34). Essentially, this means that just because you are smart, it does not mean you will be
successful. You must have social skills and good standing. Studies have found that having a high IQ,
but low emotional intelligence results in a sort of detachment a lack of understanding and a lack of
interest in the world. By contrast, a low IQ and high emotional intelligence result in an outgoing and
cheerful personality, with a desire to live life and find meaning in

Animal Captivity Dilemma
The Dilemma of Animal Captivity Animal captivity is an extremely important, and often overlooked
problem that we, as human beings, have placed on nature and the animals that live in the endangered
environment. There are groups of people worldwide who are extremely against animal captivity
because of the drastic and permanent effects it leaves on the animals. These ideas of hatred against
animal captivity are expressed in small ways such as posting a picture on Instagram that represents
animal cruelty in captivity. Another way these ideas can be expressed is through large representations
such as movies. Films such as Jurassic World and Blackfish are prime examples of this. Both of these
films are representing the severe repercussions that can come from keeping large, dangerous animals
in captivity. Though Jurassic World is a fictional movie, it is able to send the message that having
animals that are dangerous in captivity is something that is very dangerous. Blackfish offers a real and
terrifying glimpse into what happens to the mindset of animals who are put into captivity and the
threat that those animals pose to not only other animals in captivity but also the humans who are in
charge of looking after these animals. This problem of taking animals away from their natural habitat
and placing them in captivity is a prime example of how humanity is trying to assert itself as dominant
of everything else. Mankind has thought of itself as a protector of the wild animals by

Saint Brendan s Exploration
Exploration characterized the Renaissance. However, this did not just happen overnight. It all started
in the Middle Ages with a small group of saints. One man, in particular, helped to set this exploration
notion in motion during this time period. The name of this man is Saint Brendan, who is sometimes
referred to as Brandon. He is considered to be the greatest voyager of all the saints, thus he was given
the nickname Saint Brendan the Navigator. Saint Brendan impacted the society of the Middle Ages
through his personal life, his missions work, and his voyage. Saint Brendan was born in Tralee,
County Kerry, Ireland in 484 AD. He was born to parents Finnlug and Cara but he was not raised by
them. When he turned one, he was sent to live at the Killeedy Parish in Newcastle West, County

They do not believe a little currach could have ever made it across the rough Atlantic Ocean.
However, they are wrong. During the early 1900 s a group of people started advocating for the
legitimacy of Saint Brendan s journey again. After extensive research, they discovered that Columbus
might have not ever come to America if Saint Brendan had not gone on his journey. It was found that
Columbus used Brendan s journey as a reference to make sure it was even possible to make it across
the Atlantic. This finding would later inspire a man to go on a journey that proved Saint Brendan s
journey was possible. This man was Tim Severin. In 1976, he sailed across the Atlantic from Ireland
to America in a traditional Irish currach, just like the one that Brendan would have used. He made it
across. This showed that the voyage across the Atlantic would indeed have been possible. Now this
does not absolutely prove that Brendan took the trip but it does increase the possibility of it

Essay On Closed Adoption
Since ancient times and in all human cultures, children have been transferred from adults who would
not or could not be parents to adults who wanted children for love, labor, and property. Adoption s
close association with humanitarianism, upward mobility and infertility are uniquely modern
phenomena. Adoption was not fully marked on who was adopted and by whom until 1920.
(darkwing.uorgeon.edu) In fact, closed adoptions amended birth certificates and legal regulations are a
recent innovation that gained momentum in the 1930s and later, and many adoptions were open prior
to that. (Free, Barbara). Historians consider the 1851 Adoption of Children Act an important turning

Even with foster care some children hope to find a permanent family to live with but according to
research, today adoption is viewed as a last resort, even for couples with fertility problems. (Reed,

  • 2. Rabbit Proof Fence Themes Rabbit Proof Fence Write down a few of yours own thoughts about the film Rabbit Proof Fence. How did you react to the film? Did you enjoy it? Why or why not? I enjoyed the film, despite how sad it was. It brought attention to an important theme and it told the story in an exciting, yet realistic way. The fact that it was based on a real story only made it sadder. I believe this film should be watch by all to inform about the flaws in Australia´s legal system and the horrors experienced by the native population. What do you think are the film s key themes and issues? I believe the film works as a critique of Australia´s former treatment of it´s native population. The theme is injustice, which is shown through the difference in how white and aboriginal children were treated. The story also deals with important issues such as growing up, responsibility and family, and how teenagers experience these things. Especially important is the focus on the way the children have to stand up for themselves, get out of tricky situations and face challenges children should never have to face. ... We should rule out any other endobronchial lesions as the cause for his bleeding. I have discussed this matter with the patient and his wife. I have told them that there is the possibility of observing the condition by x rays and repeated tests of his sputum. They understand that this is an option; however, they decided that because of concern regarding his repeated hemoptysis, they would consent to

  • 6. The Status of Women in China As Explained in Two Essays... Throughout time, women have often been referred to as the inferior gender. In China, women have had to go through dire circumstances in order to look good in the public eye. From foot binding, to enduring abusive husbands, to becoming concubines in a prison like house, women have been through hell in order to please their men, and, most importantly, to please their society. There are a series of double standards and contradictions to how men and women are treated, and this is shown in both Lu Xun and Qiu Jun s essays as well as in the film, Raise the Red Lantern. Set the scene: it is China during the 1920s and women do not have a voice. Zoom in to a woman walking into a house that looks like a gray prison zone. This is her new home. She ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This double standard that was placed on women is portrayed through the entire movie. For example, Songlian was an educated woman, and there was a moment in the film when she wished to play her flute, but, upon finding it missing, she immediately began searching for it. As it turned out, the Master had the flute burned because he had suspected that it was from a college boy. He used the flute to keep Songlian in her place because, at the time, women were not supposed to know how to play flutes, a point proven when Songlian had confronted her maid and her maid simply stated, Flutes can only be played by men (Raise the Red Lantern). However, at the end of the film, Songlian seems to come to the realization that she is happier by herself than she is while fighting with the other wives to receive the Master s attention. Songlian had initially lost herself to the role of a concubine, but it is shown that, through the harshness of her realization and of witnessing the hanging of the third wife, she went insane. She seemed to have lost all will to live because she was stuck. She could not escape this life, and, instead of playing along, she simply gave up. In fact, Songlian lost her role as a woman by the end. She was referred to as the Hysteric instead of a woman, a wife, or a concubine (Raise the Red Lantern). She was simply a thing that had gone ... • 7. Exchange Rate In Canada The US and Canada share more than just a border. Professional athletes from both countries can often be found on the other s professional football, basketball, baseball and hockey teams. For instance, currently there are 6 teams in Canada that are currently part of US professional sports leagues. By the year 2035 it is predicted that there could be up to 11 new teams formed(Campbell). This is beneficial to both the US and Canada s economy because professional sports are typically profitable and draw a lot of money. Because the teams host and employ both Americans and Canadians, some issues arise regarding currencies. Baseball is no different. For example, the Toronto Blue Jays generate an extra $600,000 for every cent the exchange rate goes up (Exchange). In the future. the exchange rate between Canada and the US is predicted to help the Canadian sports teams. Experts can predict with accuracy how exchange rates will change up to two years in advance(Campbell). This allows sports teams to plan for the gap between American dollar salaries and Canadian dollar revenues. When the exchange rate is in favor of the Canadian dollar, more money is available to teams. This allows them to spend more on player salaries, possibly making their teams better without having to worry as much about revenue. For teams who are very successful in recent years, such as the Toronto Blue Jays, the exchange rate becomes less of an issue. Even though they chose to spend more money on player salaries, the team has performed so well that the fan loyalty and interest has gone up enough to cover the costs. The exchange rate can also impact teams negatively. One example is the Winnipeg Jets. They eventually had to relocate to Arizona because they could not create enough revenue selling in Canadian dollars. The Vancouver Canucks faced a similar problem in 2002. They played their players a total of $62 million US which exchanges to $81 Canadian. This left the team with $19 million Canadian dollars to be made up through other ways. The NHL is the 99th most profitable business in Canada (Maich) and therefore is highly impacted by the exchange rate. Canadian sports teams will have to make a choice between paying their players less money or pay them more but find new ways to bring in money in order ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Big Hero 6 Research Paper The film Big Hero 6, is an animated superhero comedy movie produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios. The movie is about Hiro, a 14 year old boy who makes an incredible invention called microbots to try to achieve his dream of enrolling into the San Fransokyo Institute of Technology. The microbots are tiny robots that are linked together through anyway, through a neuro transmitter. However, trouble strikes as someone steals them, but Hiro and his deceased brother s medical assistant robot Betamax save the day along with the other four heroes who were his brother s friends at the institute as they capture the villain. Overall, Big Hero 6 was a very intriguing and interesting movie as I noticed that it entered the technological field, as opposed to other Disney movies ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I believed that Big Hero 6 stands out from all the other Disney movies as from my evaluation through the movie made me notice that it s characters were mostly all centered around smart human beings. However, due to this, Disney still used a well known cliche as they still have at least one dumb character mostly for comedic purposes. Another well known cliche in Disney movies that is seen in Big Hero 6, is how at least one person dies in the movie whether it be during the movie, or in the introduction. Many Disney movies play out like this to create/develop a conflict, but however it is later resolved with a happy ending where all the characters achieve a particular goal or solve the conflict. But most movies aimed towards kids will always have a happy ending, as they don t want to end on a sour note. In my analysis of Big Hero 6, I saw that symbolism was conveyed throughout the movie. One notable example, came at the expense of Tadashi, Hiro s brother, as he sacrifices his life to try to save Callaghan. The loss of Tadashi consumes Hiro s will to learn/create or to even leave his house. But however, it makes him depressed and wants him to take his anger/revenge out on Callaghan who he faked his ... • 9. Evaluate My Reading Process It never occurred to me before to take some time and evaluate my reading process and my reading habits. I ve done tons of readings throughout my whole life, including articles and abstracts for school and just some novels and fiction books for entertainment. However, I barely paid attention at any of my reading routine. All I was concentrated on were either getting the information I need from the text or, in case of a novel, enjoying the plot. Up until recently I had no idea if the way I was reading is productive or not, but after accomplishing my assignment for English class to read the texts from On Creative Reading , I tried to look at my reading process from a different angle. I noticed that some writing styles make it harder for me to read, concentrate and follow the idea of the text, if the writing consists of very long phrases and is overloaded with some difficult expressions and lots of unknown terms. On the other hand, if the author tries to keep the phrases more or less simple and clear, tries to hold my interests and makes the whole thing easy to follow, all those things make my reading process more pleasurable. Surely, the topic I m researching plays a prominent role in the level of pleasure I m receiving during the reading. I m more interested in reading some articles on photography or psychology rather than finance or physics. I would enjoy more reading some fiction than some assignments for school. Richard E. Miller and Ann Jurecic, the authors of Habits of the Creative Mind, point out that reading process is not the same for everyone. They ask questions like Once the process of reading has been routinized and internalized, why is that different people reading different material reach different conclusions? Or to put this another way, why is there ambiguity? (Miller and Jurecic 80). Indeed, after reading the same text, each of us will make different conclusions and have different feelings about what we ve read. A lot depends on our previous knowledge and beliefs, ability to analyze information and many other factors. I often catch myself reading about online TV shows if they have really interesting theories and plot lines that derive from myths or other similar sources. On ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Factors To Reduce Climate Change Climate is increasing our global temperature, and we should be aware of the effects of climate change so we are conscious about how to alter our actions to reduce it. Climate is the overall weather pattern over a long period of time. Over the decades, climate has drastically changed. There are several key factors that contribute to how climate works. The atmosphere acts a greenhouse, trapping the carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gasses inside, gradually warming the earth. The clouds in the atmosphere act as a second layer trapping in the heat from water vapor, and blocking the sunlight. The albedo of ice caps and glaciers is high meaning their reflectivity is high, however, with the melting of ice caps, more heat is retained into the ocean rather than reflected off. Ocean currents also play a role in climate change in the sense that the conveyor belt keeps the oceans circulating. In addition, the Milankovitch theory which uses the earth s eccentricity, tilt, and wobble to explain the alternating warm and cool changes. Carbon dioxide plays a significant role in the effects of climate change. The trapping of greenhouse gasses, of which includes carbon dioxide, has overtime caused a global warming. Since the Industrial Revolution, humankind has tripled the amount of carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere(NASA, 2107). The burning of fossil fuels is a large contributor to the emission of carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide is gradually warming the planet which affects all ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Why Do We Discover Oxygen Oxygen Halle Bratvold December 15th 2017 Physical Science Period 3 Abstract There are many debates on which element is the most important for this planet, but oxygen is definitely one of the most necessary for life to survive. In order for humans, animals, and anything living to survive, they must have oxygen. Oxygen is produced by a process called photosynthesis, which is when plants produce glucose and oxygen by using carbon dioxide. Oxygen also makes up about 21% of our entire atmosphere. All in all, oxygen can do many things, good, bad and otherwise. But no matter what, it is still one of the most essential elements needed for earth to survive. Introduction Many people underestimate how important oxygen actually is. They don t realize that their entire survival relies on one element in more ways than one. Background Who Discovered It Oxygen was discovered by two different people on two separate occasions in the same year of 1774. The men who discovered it were Joseph Priestly and Carl Wilhelm Scheele. Joseph Priestly was born in 1733 in Wiltshire, England. He was a very smart young child, learning six languages before he reached high school. He also had a very large passion for chemistry. After he discovered oxygen, he used his discoveries to invent carbonated water. Carl Wilhelm Scheele was born in 1733 in Uppsala, Sweden. When he was 22 years old, he got a job at a pharmacy, and that spiked his interest in chemistry, which led him to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Willy Loman Flaws The author Arthur Miller wrote the book Death of a Salesman and it tells the tale of a dysfunctional family and its members. This family is comprised of Willy Loman, a salesman, Linda, Willy s wife and mother of Biff and Happy, Biff, eldest son of Willy and Linda, and Happy, younger son of Willy and Linda. • 13. My Critical Evaluation Of Various Components The reflective essay will pertain to chapter 8 and my critical evaluation of various components in this chapter. Attention is different for everyone, so ideally we all have things we play closer attention too. When I m out and I see people who wear pink or have sparkles I tend to pay more attention that area. I also get distracted very easily so if I am out and about and there is commotion going on I ll stop to see what all the fuss is about. My own selective attention deals with movements, sparkly and pink objects. If any of those apply my retina will process that for me. What types of things do you pay close attention too? Selective attention makes me think of being at a party or some type of gathering where you don t really know anyone. I usually make saccades of the environment. If I see someone I know or looks familiar I will remain fixated for a couple seconds than look away. At that moment I try and process how I recognize them. When I first saw the term dichotic listening this is what came to mind. Whisper down the alley is what popped up in my brain. I learned this game in elementary school where one person whispers a message into your and you pass it on to the next person. Sometimes there were two messages that were started in both directions, than passed to each individual participating. Whiter it is one message or two the whole point was to see if the message in the end matched the original message. In most cases it did not, do too how we hear the message is ... I will start this essay off with defining each of the subjects so that the reader may have a full understanding on what each mean. Tact is the first subject on which I am suppose to include in this essay, tact is defined as a keen sense of what to say or do to avoid giving offense; skill in dealing with difficult or delicate situations. The second definition needed for this essay is on professionalism; professionalism is defined as professional character, spirit, or methods. Given that there are three main points to that definition, character is the key phrase to take from that definition for it pertains more to this essay then spirit or methods. The third definition needed is on respect, and the most suited definition for respect as it pertains to this essay is, deference to a right, privilege, privileged position, or someone or something considered to have certain rights or privileges; proper acceptance or courtesy; acknowledgment. With the definition of respect given, the last and most important definition is disrespect. Disrespect is defined as to regard or treat without respect; regard or treat with contempt or rudeness. • 18. The Looking Glass Reflection Fantasy will always be more cherished than reality. Our imaginations give way to disappointment when it s time to buckle down and come back to the real world. However, for Nellie this is quite the opposite. In Anton Chekhov s The Looking Glass character development, symbolism, and diction are used to communicate that reality upsets our expectations. Character Development is one of the most effective tools used to communicate the overall theme of The Looking Glass. Character Development is used in The Looking Glass to show the change of Nellie s perspective from the beginning of her vision to the end. In this excerpt, Nellie describes what she sees in the mirror It was he, the destined one, the object of long dreams and hopes. The destined one was for Nellie everything, the significance of life, personal happiness, career. Nellie s filled with new found wonder and excitement when she catches a glimpse of what she presumes to be her future husband. In Nellie s perspective her life has always been building up to find the perfect man and that man now stands before her in the mirror. It s apparent that not only did Nellie idolize her husband but she s seems very naive to not consider all the bad things that come with marriage. Life will test a relationship between wife and husband Nellie s perspective changes dramatically towards the end of the book, She looked into the looking glass and saw a pale, tear stained face. There was no grey background now. I must have fallen asleep, she thought with a sigh of relief. (Chekhov 7). Nellie has seen the full preview of what her life is supposed to be and she s horrified. Nellie no longer is a victim of her own naive complex she fully realizes that life is no picnic. The development of Nellie s perspective of what seemed like a bright future has been shattered by the universal fact that reality upsets expectations. We can never be certain of our future and setting up false hopes is setting yourself up for a rude awakening to reality. Character development was instrumental to the theme because it proves the point that our expectations for our future is not certainly not what we will receive no matter how hard we try to work towards. • 19. Women s Female Leadership During The Renaissance The concept of the salon, originating in Italy during the Renaissance, was introduced to France in the seventeenth century and evolved into a three hundred year old tradition built exclusively on the strength of feminocentric rule. One of the most fascinating things about the institution of the salon is that its female leadership flourished during a period of history when women were not permitted to be involved in activities outside the boundaries of domesticity. According to Wolf, this paradoxical climate began to emerge during the Renaissance when the Salic law came into effect in fourteenth century. This Law denied women the right to inherit the family name, fortune or property. She was also denied the right to receive a public education. Women learned the only way to gain social status was through marriage, conducting cultural and social functions of the court in their husband s name. Young girls were raised to believe their primary role was to develop the attributes that would secure marrying into the right family. The ability to sing, dance, play multiple instruments was a mark of distinction. Music education especially for women was extremely important to those among the upper class. Some scholars believe men imposed the study of music on women...to prevent them from acquiring the kinds of knowledge, hence power, that men possessed. This could result in a considerable amount of hiring, firing or laying off of employees; insecure and unhappy employees; increased inventory carrying costs; problems with labour unions; and erratic utilization of plant and equipment. It also implies a great deal of flexibility on the firm s part. The major advantage of a chase strategy is that it allows inventory to be held to the lowest level possible, and for some firms this is a considerable savings. Most firms embracing the just in time production concept utilize a chase strategy approach to aggregate planning. Most firms find it advantageous to utilize a combination of the level and chase strategy. A combination strategy (sometimes called a hybrid or mixed strategy) can be found to better meet organizational goals and policies and achieve lower costs than either of the pure strategies used independently. TECHNIQUES FOR AGGREGATE PLANNING Techniques for aggregate planning range from informal trial and error approaches, which usually utilize simple tables or graphs, to more formalized and advanced mathematical techniques. William Stevenson s textbook Production/Operations Management contains an informal but useful trial and error process for aggregate planning presented in outline form. This general procedure consists of the following steps: 1. Determine demand for each period. 2. Determine capacity for each period. This capacity should match demand, which ... The book, Boy is an autobiography written by Roald Dahl. It was his first book and it is a combination of real events in his life. Matilda is one of his fictional books that he wrote later on. Dahl uses events that are actually gruesome and quite horrifying and makes them humorous by using sarcasm, hyperboles, short sentences, imagery, similes and juxtapositions (rose96, 2011). Dahl uses a lot of adjectives to describe the characters in his books to portray them in a humorous way. He uses figures of speech to describe a character and to make this character unique. Chapter 3, The bicycle and the sweet shop in Boy is a perfect example of how Dahl describes the characters in his book. This chapter is about Boy and his friends who absolutely loves the sweet shop. In this chapter het describes the sweet shops importance as ...the very centre of our lives. (Dahl, 1984:33). The only bad thing about this sweet shop was the lady who owned it, Mrs Pratchett. He describes her as a small skinny old hag with a moustache on her upper lip and a mouth as sour as a green gooseberry. (Dahl, 1984:33). Dahl uses a simile to describe her mouth and compares it to a green gooseberry. Dahl then starts to describe how dirty she is. Her apron was grey and greasy. (Dahl, 1984:33). Despite this, the American colonist simultaneously, and inadvertently began to develop their own unique identity. One that wasn t necessarily a conscious decision to be different from England, but one that was largely shaped by, as Brinkley states, the nature of the New World (53). American colonist tried hard to maintain their cultural Englishness, but were being shaped by environmental factors in the areas where they now lived. This led to unique differences between the colonies and England in terms of population, economics, and society and religion, and political ideas. These factors not only produced differences between the colonies and England, but among the colonies themselves. Brinkley writes that, Many distinct societies developed in the colonies, but the greatest distinction was between the colonies of the North and those of the South (81). This resulted in the colonist not only developing their own identity from that of England, but in many ways from each other. The same distinct factors such as population, economics, and society and religion, and political ideas that differed between the colonies and England, were the same factors that differed from each of the colonies. • 31. Essay On The Movie Coraline In terms of plot, the movie adaptation of Neil Gaiman s Coraline is extremely true to the source material. It still tells the story of a young girl who grows unappreciative of her real family and finds a magical door in her new home that leads to a better, fantastical version of the family she has now. The creepiness and scary moments are also true to form, with this world being only a copy of the real world, created by the Other Mother in an attempt to trap Coraline forever. The quest to rescue the three ghost children is almost exactly the same, with two of their souls being found in Miss Spink and Forcible s theater and Mr. B s circus. But since the movie added a scene in which an enticing garden is used as an item to gain Coraline s trust in the Other Mother s fake world, one of the ghost souls was placed in this location instead. Another major difference between the book and the movie is the addition of the character Wybie. He acts as a source of inside knowledge about The Pink Palace and helps kill the Other Mother s hand at the climax of the movie, while in the book Coraline gathered her information about her home from her parents as well as Miss Spink and Forcible, and killed the Other Mother s hand by tricking it rather than crushing it. • 33. Communication Is A Form Of Symmetrical Communication Communication can come in various forms. A person can write, speak, or even use American Sign Language to communicate. Within communication itself, there are various styles used and ways to receive feedback. To name a couple, two way asymmetrical and two way symmetrical communication are two well know forms in regards to Public Relations. Asymmetrical Communication happens when professionals seek to pursue their publics into changing their opinions about certain things. However, this attempt is usually unequal, given that professionals use research to help them persuade their publics. Symmetrical Communication on the other hand has a form of balance to it and can lead publics to change their attitudes on their own. I think that blogging is a form of symmetrical communication. Although it may seem unusual, this is an actual form of communication. A person (both professional and non professional) is able to publish their opinion about something and publics are able to read and/or respond by commenting. Usually blog posts get overlooked. There are probably a million posts that have been published, but no one has read. However, well known bloggers or blog sites, like Perez Hilton, TMZ, Mashable, and my personal favorite, The Shade room are all somewhat reliable sources. Many of these are digital media. These are people and/or their sites that receive a ton of feedback from their blog posts. The Shade Room in particular usually posts updates and breaking news on celebrities, ... • 34. I Can Remember Mine With Perfect Clarity Essay As babies most of us go through some sort of traumatic experience. Whether it be a high fever from an illness or a near miss car wreck. Nine times out of ten we never remember these incidents, with only stories from relatives to know that they happened. I can remember mine with perfect clarity. At the age of one year old, one day before my second birthday, I sat in my day care with my hands leaning back looking up at the colorful displays. While it is illegal in North Carolina to not have heavy bookshelves mounted to the ground, this day care had chosen to forgo that rule and use them as room dividers. A little boy on the other side of the divider with sandy blond hair shoved his backpack into the cubby, excited to go out and play among his friends. One of the poorly taken care of wheels on the bottom of this bookshelf collapsed toppling over onto my hand, crushing almost every bone in the process and partially severing two of my fingers on my left hand. After 3 blood transfusions, a life flight trip to Duke Hospital, 3 later surgeries, and careful reconstruction, I am now left with a functioning hand albeit slightly deformed on the two severed fingers. These incredible doctors were able to save the nail bed although my middle finger curves over somewhat bent inward along with some scarring. This is what life would be like for me with a perfect hand for three days. Day one, I would wake up in my bed and sit up. I would excitedly run my fingers through my hair like most ... As with any industry that has lasted that length of time, Hollywood has gone through a few changes to deal with the changes in technology and culture. One of the more significant changes that Hollywood has faced since the advent of sound in films, was the fall of its Golden Era. There were a combination of reasons the industry went through dramatic changes in the late 1950s to mid 1960s. The Paramount decree and other government imposed limitation on power of the studios, change in audience demographic, and a strict code system limiting the types of stories that could be told through the medium of film all contributed to a shift in the industry and the type of product that Hollywood would ... New Hollywood filled a void for a burgeoning new demographic emerging in the late 1950 s; the teenager. This demographic focused on those who were no longer children but not quite adults and the perceived freedoms they deserved, a revolutionary idea in a society where those under a certain age were children and above it were adults. Teen culture in relation to films focused on the drive ins and the types of films being shown. How Baseball Survived the Great Depression Essays Baseball remains today one of America s most popular sports, and furthermore, baseball is one of America s most successful forms of entertainment. As a result, Baseball is an economic being of its own. However, the sustainability of any professional sport organization depends directly on its economic capabilities. For example, in Baseball, all revenue is a product of the fans reaction to ticket prices, advertisements, television contracts, etc. During the devastating Great Depression in 1929, the fans of baseball experienced fiscal suffering. The appeal of baseball declined as more and more people were trying to make enough money to live. There was a significant drop in attention, attendance, and enjoyment. In addition, the farm system was created and refined during the great depression. The farm system was a way to cut down the expensive sums of money spent on buying new players. Lauren Vorel, who is a baseball historian, describes the farm system by saying, The farm system allowed major league teams to develop ballplayers in the minor league teams and draft them up to the majors, instead of having to complete expensive trades with other major league teams for developed ball players. Because of the farm system, baseball clubs saved money while still having valuable players. The farm system was prosperous, and many teams began to have success from implementing the farm system. For example, the White Sox s team was composed of many players who came from their farm system. Because the White Sox did not trade or purchase players during this time, they saved a lot of money. • 40. Characteristics In The Colonies Of America The first characteristic in the colonies of America that can be described as democratic would be examples of majority rule in the different facets of the everchanging governmental structures. This characteristic can be seen in the Mayflower Compact which began from forty one separatists who came across for religious freedom. This compact was designed by those of their religion, and was structured as a covenant which grew into a civil government based from that original church government. This compact allowed the group equal say in rules and law, and chose a governor and his assistants by majority rule. The next example of majority rule also was designed from a standpoint of a church organization. Thomas Hooker led congregations from Massachusetts Bay to Connecticut and there organized a self governing colony. They formed what was called the Fundamental Orders which were a series of laws that created a commonwealth based on Christianity. However, different from the Mayflower Compact, the Fundamental Orders were voted on by all members of the community not just church members. The best example of majority rule would be what was called the House of Burgesses in Virginia, but under various other names in other areas, such as the House of Representatives in Massachusetts. These structures of government were formed from elected assemblies, where the lower houses were elected by the popular vote. In your response provide at least two examples of this filmmaking practice. The term event sequence film refers to a work of cinema which is centered around a single discrete event from beginning to end, as opposed to focusing on abstract concepts or impressions (MacDougall 126). This style of film was developed initially at the Harvard Film School by Timothy Asch and John Marshall to represent the daily lives of its subjects, which in turn, attempts to exhibit the ethnography of a place or culture. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although it is a common practice, it is not the only way to construct an ethnographic film. In Night Cries:a Rural Tragedy, creator Tracey Moffatt departs from traditional ethnographic realism by adding elements of fantasy and exaggerated representation to her production. The film itself is not a live shot documentary, but attempts to represent a different form of truth through piece of fiction with a script and set. Despite its lack of placement in legitimate history, Night Cries still represents an ethnography. Similarly, Leviathan (2012) does not attempt to showcase a cultural story. Using unconventional camera shots and sci fi like effects, it exhibits an ethnography in a nonlinear way which exaggerates its violent and haunting qualities. The producers of these films may have diverged from ethnographic realism because traditional tendencies tend to depict ethnography as though it were stagnant and exotic. In great detail, Thucydides describes the conflict between Corcyra and Corinth over the control of their mutual colony Epidamnus, in which Corcyra sought aid from the naval power of Athens. He states this was the first cause of the war that Corinth had against the Athenians, viz. that they had fought against them with the Corcyraeans in time of treaty. (1.55) In a speech, the Corcyraeans employ Athens that helping them will put them on the right side of history and would also be in their own self interests. In a speech, they claim there are but three considerable naval powers in Hellas, Athens, Corcyra, and Corinth, and that if you allow two of these three to become one, and Corinth to secure us for herself, you will have to hold the sea against the united fleets of Corcyra and Peloponnese. • 47. Copyright Laws And Its Impact On Intellectual Property... Introduction Copyright laws were established to provide authors with rights over their creations and to prevent unauthorized use and distribution of these creations by others. Although the law grants ownership to one party, usually the author of the work, there is a doctrine for granting ownership of work made for hire to educational institutions (Crews, 2006). This doctrine supports that if the employee developed the work under the parameters of their scope of employment or through the use of resources provided by the employer, then the employer owns the rights to the work (Crews, 2006). In an effort to clarify the mandates of copyright law and improve understanding of intellectual property ownership, educational institutions have developed their own policies addressing intellectual property ownership. The policies vary by institution, but share the same purpose of providing guidelines and conditions for ownership of creations by the educational institution s faculty. The University of Maryland in College Park (UMCP) promotes the development of educational materials by faculty to provide and deliver the best education to its students. In an effort to address the law of copyright and clarify intellectual property ownership, as well as patents and trademarks, UMCP has developed an extensive intellectual property policy. Emotional Intelligence, By Daniel Goleman In the book, Emotional Intelligence, Daniel Goleman discusses what emotional intelligence is, how it can be achieved, and why it can matter more than your IQ. Emotional intelligence, by his definition, is the ability to recognize and understand both our personal emotions and the emotions of others. This also includes the ability to manage our personal emotions. He introduces us to the topic and the history of the brain, discusses the importance of it in our lives, marriage, and business, and concludes by suggesting it should be developed during childhood when the brain is still developing. However, this does not mean our emotional intelligence skills cannot be sharpened and taught during adulthood. According to Goleman, academic intelligence has little to do with emotional life (Goleman, 34) and therefore does not correlate immensely with success. More specifically, he says IQ contributes about 20% to the factors that determine life success, which leaves 80% to other forces... ranging from social class to luck (34). Essentially, this means that just because you are smart, it does not mean you will be successful. You must have social skills and good standing. Animal Captivity Dilemma The Dilemma of Animal Captivity Animal captivity is an extremely important, and often overlooked problem that we, as human beings, have placed on nature and the animals that live in the endangered environment. There are groups of people worldwide who are extremely against animal captivity because of the drastic and permanent effects it leaves on the animals. These ideas of hatred against animal captivity are expressed in small ways such as posting a picture on Instagram that represents animal cruelty in captivity. Another way these ideas can be expressed is through large representations such as movies. Films such as Jurassic World and Blackfish are prime examples of this. Both of these films are representing the severe repercussions that can come from keeping large, dangerous animals in captivity. Though Jurassic World is a fictional movie, it is able to send the message that having animals that are dangerous in captivity is something that is very dangerous. Blackfish offers a real and terrifying glimpse into what happens to the mindset of animals who are put into captivity and the threat that those animals pose to not only other animals in captivity but also the humans who are in charge of looking after these animals.
