A Good Man Is Hard To Find Character Analysis Essay
You wouldn t shoot a lady, would you? the grandmother said and removed a clean handkerchief
from her cuff and began to slap her eyes with it (O Connor 88). The Misfit pointed the tip of his
shoe into the ground and made a little hole and then covered it up again. I would hate to have to,
he said (paragraph 89). The Grandmother is one of the major characters in A Good Man is Hard to
Finda short storywritten by Flannery O Conner in 1955. Throughout the story the grandmother
shows evidence of personality disorders, emotionlessness, and controlling character traits. It s the
grandmother s lack of self awareness about these characteristics that leads to the death of the family.

She judges others based on their clothes, race and actions. She considers herself morally superior
than others. During the car ride the grandmother shows the superficiality of her good blood,
through her hypocritical nature. She constantly nags, lies and uses offensive racist terms such as
nigger and pickaninny. The grandmother shows signs of the Narcissistic Personality Disorder.
According to the American Journal of Psychiatry, the essential feature of narcissistic personality
disorder is a pervasive pattern of grandiosity, need for admiration, and lack of empathy,
beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts. (Caligor) The grandmother
has a grandiose sense of self importance, in her eyes she is the pure example of a true lady and
how one should act. She is preoccupied with fantasies of power, brilliance, beauty and ideal love.
She believes that she is special and requires special admiration. Her sense of entitlement gives her
unreasonable expectations of favorable treatment, especially towards the end when she believes
The Misfit would not kill her. She lacks empathy, unwilling to recognize or identify with the

The Catholic Church and Charity
The Catholic Church has been around since 100 AD. While it has been a place of worship for over
1.1 billion people all over the world, the Catholic Church is not just a source of faith for those same
people. The Catholic Church is one of the world s largest sources of charity. The Catholic Church
serves billions of people all over the world every year with a large range of services. The Catholic
religion is dominated by the theological philosophy that one must be a good person, but also give
back during the course of their lifetime. With charity being one of the core values of the Catholic
religion, it is no question that the Catholic Churchis quite probably the largest charity in the world.
The Catholic Church provides for the poor by giving them a place to eat and stay, they allocate
funds for many types of organizations involving helping the downtrodden and people who cannot
help themselves, and most importantly, the Catholic Church has a large network of people who go
on missions to different countries to help spread the religion of Catholicism, but also help the
people there build homes, water treatment facilities, and help them with an assortment of other
health related tasks such as AIDs prevention and malaria prevention. The Catholic Church s main
priority in regards to their charitable contributions to the world is the fight against poverty.
Catholics have been trying to help the poor for quite some time now. The teachings of Jesus Christ

Cargo Transport Evolved From When The Cargo Industry
Background
Shipping a package/parcel to anybody around the world today seems easy and convenient; the
thought of what the carrier goes through does not cross anybody s mind. The airline industry in
cargo transport evolved from when the cargo industry began. When comparing all airliners in cargo
transport, all the basics for carrying cargo seems to be the same. First aircraft and crew safety
must be adhered to and proper weigh and balance must be accomplished. Inspection of the cargo
is critical! Proper weight, hazardous material, and dimensions must be physically checked.
Finally, all paperwork must be compiled...but, how did all this came to be? When all this started
back in 1918 and Air Mail service begun, I bet nobody checked all these precautions we do
today. Possibly loaded the aircraft with as much bags of mail in the cargo hold as the aircraft
could hold and attempt a takeoff. After having much success the U.S. post office took over all
responsibilities for the War Department, and so we begin. (Vassilopanagos, A. 2015)
History of FedEx
After the end of the war in 1944 there was an abundant supply of military pilots, ten of which came
from the 1st American Volunteer Group (AVG). They were experienced in hauling freight and
started their own company calling it National Skyway Freight, which later became known as the
Flying Tiger Line. The company utilized surplus aircraft purchased from the Navy and created a
transcontinental route across the United States.

Social Media And Networking. Online Social Media Sites
Social Media and Networking Online social media sites enable users to connect with other
people who share similar interests. Members of the social networking world can post news,
videos, pictures, and other content. The huge popularity of these social media sites has
generated debate on a variety of issues, including safety concerns, privacy, and usage. A social
network is an online service or site through which people create and maintain interpersonal
relationships (Merriam Webster 2017). Social media and social networks play an essential role in
teenagers daily lives around the world. There are people that debate whether it is improving or
demoting society. It is hard to believe that ten years ago there was no Facebook or Twitter.

Sometimes, people get so socially attached to something online that they lose touch with friends,
creating small gaps and holes in close friendships/relationships (Roots of Action). Another big
downside of social networking is cyberbullying. The use of social networks exposes individuals
to harassment or inappropriate contact. Social media is one of the foremost causes of
cyberbullying in recent years (Final Inquiry Project). Cyberbullying victims no longer put
schoolwork or homework first. They think that if they attend school and try to make friends,
they will be judged the same way they were online. Three million teens and kids are absent from
school per month due to bullying online. In several cases, victims of cyberbullying have been
driven to suicide. 20% of kids cyberbullied think about suicide, and 1 in 10 attempt it (Cyber
Bully). Social media is available to predators as well as friends and has spread widely among
young people. Due to social networking sites, employee productivity is lost in the workplace. The
unrestricted usage of social media is having a negative impact on employee productivity (Digital
Vidya 2017). Facebook is the most popular and most frequently visited social network platform
used in the workplace. People get in after lunch hours and then lose themselves on social media.

An Case Study On The Law Firm
The case study has some very important facts that define not only some errors in judgement but
also some very important violations in employment law. This case study is based out of a law
firm that has hired a partner who did not disclose that she had a child and the case eludes that she
is a single parent. Based on the case study the other partner that is in the same office who hired her
is starting to complain about the fact that she had not disclosed the fact that she had a child. To this
end the partner has said that he was upset because she had not said anything about the child when
she interviewed (Walsh, 2013, p. 96). The next issue that arises in this case study is that the male
partner that hired her is not only perturbed about the fact that this new partner has a child but also
sees her as less than him. The partner has started treating her harshly and has started using foul
language around her and has begun claiming that the commitment differential between men and
women and telling her a story about how incredulous he was when a femalepartner who had been
on maternity leave asked about achieving partnership (Walsh, 2013, p. 96).
Additionally, the new female partner was challenged thinking that she was going to be
discriminated against women and children (Walsh, 2013, p.96). This in turn caused her to discuss
her concerns with one of the firms other offices, which caused a big issue with her own office
partners that were entrenched in the firm. The old

The Impact Of Overfishing On The Environmental Balance
As far back as the history of man, humans have been dependent on the ocean and water resources
for food and survival. While hundreds of years of single handed fishing rods in coastal and
inland water channels have not alone been the root cause of overfishing, these common
practices today still impact the environmental balance. Ocean overfishing is the removal or
taking of wildlife from the oceans and seas at rates too high for fished species to replace
themselves and is a threat that exists to our way of life. Overfishing can occur by commercial
fishing, single person excessive fishing in a particular area of a body of water, or by other natural
predatory activity. A recent report by scientists said that if commercial fishspecies the fish caught
for food continue to decline at the current rate, by the year 2048 most commercial fish species
will be in danger of never recovering because of the break in the natural ecosystem which would
affect the diversity of wildlife in the ocean (Kurlansky, 2011). As a humanspecies, we are
responsible for educating each other on this worldwide concern to help save our planet. If this isn t
a reason to begin efforts of worldwide education on overfishing, what is? The impact of overfishing
has long term consequences on the human race and the animal population as it threatens our
biological balance and our ecosystem. The good news is that there are currently organizations,
governments and entities working hard to make a

By making improvements to the Welfare System in America has become a way of life that has

The welfare reform system s goal was to get people off the welfare system and onto the job
market. The hope was to move people from dependency to self reliance. Opposition to the new
welfare reform system has occurred. Some believe support in a welfare to work program might
create new problems for children by adding strains to family life or by exposing children to poor
substitute care arrangements for policies that design welfare to work programs that pursue the dual
goals of economic self sufficiency for families and healthy development of children. (http:/
/www.nga.org/welfare/employmentretentationemployed.htm).
Welfare policies aimed at improving family circumstances for both children and parents must not
make the error of focusing solely on parents; if the intention is to enhance the immediate and long
term development of both generations within the family, then policies must differentiate between
youth and their parents. These issues have brought about numerous debates. These debates have
focused on the welfare reform system. Still in the debate are the pros and cons of this new system,
focusing on the welfare of the child, the parent, the employer, and the taxpayer. Improvements to
the Welfare System will prevent fraud by allowing more than one family member to work; limiting
opportunities to receive a higher education; and providing opportunities to rise above poverty.
First, by allowing more than one family member to work will

Determinism In Jack London s To Build A Fire
An Analytic Jack London s story named To Build a Fire has many themes attached to it. Through
this story, the author attempts to convey messages regarding man s mental makeup and process.
The overall theme is one of a battle between naturalism and determinism and various themes linking
the two.
Determinism argues that man does not have free will but rather their circumstances are shaped by
their environmental or biological makeup (which is out of their control). In the story, the concept of
determinism is what provides context to the fact that life is amoral; the man defines any negative
outcomes as a lack of luck or an accident which gives credence to the fact that the story starts out as
deterministic in nature. The concept of determinism ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The man, although highly adept at the management of tools and processes to start a fire, was
clearly devoid of instinct when the need for the anticipation of a hazard arose (which is a key
component of survival). The man also did not have the ability to translate the effects of the cold, to
the hazard it posed to him; routinely shrugging off the cold and disregarding the advice given by
the man from Sulphur Creek. On the other hand, the story portrayed the dog as having great instinct
in that even though it does not have the intellectual ability to understand the cold; it instinctively
bites the ice forming between its toes. It is possible to glean from the story that the man is actually
fighting against nature to survive, but the environment does not have any link to the struggles of
the man. It is not nature s determination to hurt the man; rather that nature is indifferent to its
inhabitants. The relentless force of nature causes the man in the story to change his goal after a
couple of accidents . Initially, he started off with the aim of reaching the camp, then it changed to
fighting against the frostbite, and ultimately the instincts kicked in and he merely wanted to stay

Essay on Music Censorship
Music Censorship
Today, in the 1990 s, citizens in our society are being bombarded with obscene material from
every direction. From the hate lyrics of Gun s N Roses to the satanic lyrics of Montley Crue and
Marilyn Manson to the sexually explicit graphical content of today s movies, the issue is how
much society is going to permit and where we, as a society, should we draw the line. The freedom
of speech has always been considered a right, but that doesn t mean that you can shout, Fire! in a
crowded movie theater. The real question is whether such material is harmful or dangerous to our
society.
Many people are asking whether or not we should censor offensive material. They believe that
some material is too obscene for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While some people feel that government officials are the best way to restrict offensive messages,
others feel that self censorship is a more effective method. A recent series of incidents suggests
that executives in many private firms have begun doing just that. Book publishers, TV stations,
and others have drawn the line when faced with words or images that are tasteless or offensive.
For example, in 1990, Andy Rooney, a CBS news correspondent, was suspended for his racist
remark, Blacks have watered down their genes because the less intelligent ones... have the most
children.
Another episode of self imposed censorship is when George Michael released his song I Want
Your Sex. In 1987, AIDS and other sexual diseases were rampantly spreading and his song
condoned casual sex. The MTV executives also sent the video for this song back because of the
explicit, sexual images.
A third incident happened when MTV drew the line again, this time with Madonna s video for
Justify My Love. They said that the video illustrates Madonna s erotic fantasies. It was said to be
too hot to handle.
The advocates of the second solution agree that America is suffering from a deluge of offensive
messages, but they feel that the best way of dealing with the problem is not government censorship,
but private sector censorship.
The critics of this point of view think that private sector censorship will not be

Similarities Of Grendel And Beowulf
This essay is a character analysis that compares and contrast the two main characters of the epic
Beowulf . The essay informs the reader of the traits the two characters have in common including
their cocky personalities and their impossible strength. It also mentions the many opposing
characteristics of the two characters including how brave or cowardly they are, and weather or not
they want to help or hurt people. Many direct quotes from the epic Beowulfare also within the essay
to help support each allegation, giving proof to the characteristics identified.
Compare and Contrasting Beowulf and Grendel
There is a hero and a villain in every story, we have: Batman and The Joker, Spider Man and The
Green Goblin, Thor and Loki, and of course Beowulf and Grendel. In the epic Beowulf our two
main characters are Beowulf the hero of the story, and Grendel the evil demon who terrorized the
world. In the epic, Beowulf and Grendel are noticeably different, but at the same time alike in
many ways. The people in the story may not have notice the similarities, but they could not be
hidden from the peering eye of the reader. In the story Beowulf was was brave, while Grendel was
cowardly, Beowulf was helpful, while Grendel only wanted to hurt people; in comparison, they
were both unnaturally strong and very arrogant.
To begin, one of the many ways that Beowulf was different than Grendel is that Beowulf was
brave. Every night Grendel snuck into Herot Hall to destroy King Hrothgar s men. He did this
while hiding in the shadows, sneaking around in the dead of night, and attacking while the men
we asleep and at there most vulnerable. These are not the characteristics the brave, these are the
characteristics of a foul, loathsome, cowardly beast. Mean while, Beowulf liked to meet a
problem head on, in this case the problem was Grendel himself. Determined Beowulf sailed to
Denmark to defeat Grendel, telling Hrothgar that he will take Grendel s life with his bare hands.
As told in the story, That mighty protector of men/ Meant to hold the monster till it s life/ leaped
out (Raffel, 1963, l. 366 368). And when Beowulf got the chance to do just that, Grendel took the
cowards road, Grendel s one thought

In 19th century in Europe there is rapid increase in suicide. The case of death can be positive
action such as jumping from an upper window or negative action such as hunger strike. Durkheim
eliminates psychotic paranoid suicide because it is non sociological explanation of suicide and it is
not the result of self concise aim. The factor correlation between mental disorder and self
destruction varies considerably.
Scotland had comparatively high level of lunacy but there is low level self destruction. While
Saxony showed a low level of lunacy but a high rate of self destruction. Alcohol addiction and
substance abuse are eliminated by Durkheim (Law, 2011, p.200). Undoubtedly, race itself is
abolished as an irrational concept. In the month of summer and at temperature degrees of latitude
(50 55 degrees), there are more suicide cases because when communion is most competency

Durkheim examines is imitation. Durkheim differing the suicide rates among protestant and
catholic, he argues that stronger social control among catholic result in lower suicide rates.
According to Durkheim, catholic society has normal levels of integration while protestant society
has low levels. He says that suicide rates are higher in men than in women. Suicides rates are
higher among those who are not in relationship than those who are married. Because of the being

young men had that someone when it mattered most. For Biondi, it was his mother. For
Gallimore, it was his whole family, who now call him Honest Abe. For James, it was his father.
(Reilly 24). These quotes show that these four boys all had people that they looked up to that
taught them wrong from right. So when the time came to decide between wrong and right, they
found courage from these role models to do the right thing. In Thank You Ma am Rodger has
the choice to run from Mrs. Jones, but instead he decides to stay and eat dinner with her. I think
Rodger found the courage to do this from, Mrs. Jones, who became a role model to to him. You
ought to be my son. I would teach you right from wrong. (Hughes 15). This quote shows that
Mrs. Jones took Rodger in and decided to help guide him and his decisions. Well, you didn t
have to snatch my pocketbook to get some suede shoes, said Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones.
You could of asked me. (Hughes 30). This quote shows that Mrs. Jones teaches Rodger the
decision he should ve made under the circumstances he was in. It is because Mrs. Jones modeled
for Rodger the difference between right and wrong that he found the courage to stay with Mrs.
Jones. In The Road Not Taken the travelerfound the courage to take the right road from from other
people that also chose to take the road less traveled by. Though as for

Childhood Cancer Clusters in California s Central Valley Case report :Sakshi Arora March 22,
2012 This case study examines childhood cancers in agricultural communities of Mc Farland and

Voter Identification Law Essay
While it has been one of the hottest topics in the election policy for the last several years, its
legacy actually extends back to 1950 which is when South Carolina first request that voters show
some type of identifications document at the polls. Back then, no photo was required, they needed
only any document that bear the voter s name. After that, in 1970, Hawaii took on the same
approach as South Caroline toward voting requirement. However, in all these states, they were still
able to cast a regular ballot if they did not have the requested ID under some provisions (National
Conference of State Legislature). After that, many other states started to adopt the same policy, but

British Crime Survey Chapter 1 Summary
This book aims to take on the main issues involved in modern contemporary society and
victimology, issues such as the media, race, gender, class and age. Each chapter is specific to a
particular element of victimology so to try and avoid broad sweeping statements but instead to
give in depth insight into each element (e.g. gender). The book was published in 2007 so is not
outdated and is written by three different authors which means opinions are not unfairly based on
one person s view.
Chapter one is about the foundations of victimisation, the social division in society due to the key
issues which the authors go on to investigate in further chapters, and the relationship that this social
division has with victimisation. This chapter introduces other themes too like social inequality,
media representation of victimisation, political responses to victims, and the authors also draw
attention the British Crime Survey, pointing out that there is an over reliance on it and it may not
be valid enough, for example victims may not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In chapter eight the authors seem to have a focus on society being fixated with young people
being offenders and very rarely in the spotlight as victims. Once again British Crime Survey data
is used but the limitations are pointed out by the author, such as the questions in the survey may
reflect an agenda by the interviewer (p214). The theme of social exclusion is picked up in this
chapter in that children are marginalised in the policy making process, all in all this chapter
defends young people greatly, perhaps to offer an alternative argument to the traditional. Chapter
nine leads a balanced discussion on old age how it relates to victimisation, and how it is a socially
constructed concept. There is also a critique to the assumption that old people have an irrational

Deployment and the Military Family
Deployment and the Military Family

Deployments are a difficult time for military families. Deployment of a loved one affects the
whole family. The service member may worry about how his family may fare without him or even
miss milestones in his children s lives. The spouse has to function as a single parent and take on
responsibilities left behind by the service member. The children may suffer from behavioral
problems and not adjust well to having a parent deployed.
Few studies have been done to examine the affects of deployment on military families. There are
many hardships faced by military families. Unless you have experienced the demanding lifestyle of
the families you ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Speaking from the perspective of a military spouse, my opinion is this; we are proud of our service
to the United States as a family. The sacrifices that have been made are worth keeping our children
and fellow citizens safe. We are a living and working part of the organism called society.
The military family may very well fit into the conflict perspective. The military family is constantly
battling to protect the power of the nation from other nations. Families are a constant state of
conflict with each other. The service member deploys. The children begin to experience behavioral
problems. The spouse takes on extra roles acts as single parents.
With military families in a constant state of conflict there are now research groups doing studies
to find out what the effects of deployment are on the whole family. As these groups release their
findings we can offer families resources to help combat the conflicts of deployment. Some
resources now being offered to improve quality of life are parenting classes adapted to military life
style, child care, and mental health resources. Operation Purple Camp is one example of the studies
that is helping military families. The program gave children to meet other children like them. It also
surveyed the families on several different occasions to gather data (http://www.rand.org/pubs

MTV is coming from the western world and it is well known for airing explicit sexually, open

people in the world today. Some Arab females are wearing clothed mask to conceal themselves,
they are not suppose to show any part of their body to strangers. Family is highly value for the

Air Taxi Industry Case Study
1. Is the air taxi industry poised for take off? What customer segments are most likely to lead to
success?
I undoubtedly agree that the air taxi industry will find success, however, I do think that it may
take a couple more years for it to truly reach a point of full potential. This is largely due to the
current difficulties in building and maintaining a fleet of VLJ s. There is such a high demand for
the Eclipse 500, the best VLJ currently on the market, which has worked very well to slow growth
in this industry space. When the development and manufacturing of these planes become more
streamlined, I think it will be easier for air taxi companies to build their fleet and expand into new
regions within and outside of the United States. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

2. The airline industry is often considered an unattractive industry, with high variability of
performance and problems of overcapacity? Is the air taxi industry any different?
The air taxi industry is very different from the original airline industry. For Linear air at least,
they handle bookings on a per plane, per hour basis. This scheduling model helps to eliminate
the problem that commercial airlines have because there will be no planes flying for little to no
reason. By this, I mean that a lot of commercial flights end up flying with several empty seats or
seats sold at a discounted rate. With the high cost of flying a larger plane, when seats are empty
or sold for less it is almost not worth it to have that flight in the first place. For Linear air,
charging on a per plane basis allows them to ensure that no plane is flown without need. Along
with this, the air taxi industry works around customer need, and customers have the ability to book
flights with shorter notice. This in turn, however, means that a flight may not always be available
but, does help to assist with overcapacity issues. Specifically, for Herp and Linear Air, they are
expanding their air taxi Capacity watchfully, with only 960 revenue hours, per plane, per

To What Extent Does Genetics Affect Human Intelligence

Precious Obaro

Author Note
Introduction
This paper will be comparing and providing an evaluation of the extent to which genetic information
plays a role in the human intelligence in relation to IQ levels in monozygotic and dizygotic twins.
Human intelligence is defined as the ability to mentally solve, learn and reason and due to its
nature, intelligence integrates cognitive functions such as perception, memory, language and
planning. As a grand basis of the definition of intelligence, intelligence can be calculated and
evaluated with the help of standardized testing known as IQ testing. IQ is a quotient of intelligence.
(Colom, R., Karama, S., Jung, R. E., Haier, R. J. (n.d.). Human intelligence and brain networks.).

Differences in DNA is what causes variation in individuals and this was established in Darwin s
theory. Monozygotic and dizygotic twins share significant amounts of their DNA with their other
twin, 100% in monozygotic twins and 50% in dizygotic twins. This is why twins are specifically
targeted in investigations to find the extent at which genetics influences intelligence. Therefor
allow researchers to see the separation of the shared genetic and environmental influences in
intelligence, once again allowing them to estimate a quota that is attributed to genetic variation and
what is as a result of the environment, shared or unshared. ( Twin studies, n.d.). Psychologist and

Discuss The Use Of Irony In The Pardoner s Tale
Grant Sauber Mr. Jason Robinson English 12 Honors 19 October 2014 Canterbury Tales Essay
The use of irony has had a profound effect on the world of literature as it is seen in The
Canterbury Tales. Irony can help shape the reader s perception on the theme of the novel as a
whole. Throughout the tales, Chaucer subtly uses irony to criticize different aspects of his
society. This irony is namely used in The General Prologue , The Pardoner s Tale , and The
Miller s Tale . Therefore, by looking at these various tales in the novel, one can see how Chaucer
uses irony to critique society. One way that Chaucer uses this irony is in The General Prologue
when he describes all the different characters. This allows him to interject various facts... Show

In short, the Pardoner s tale was a lesson. Chaucer uses The Pardoner s Tale to reveal the
hypocrisy of the Pardoner himself in multiple cases. Mostly in all of these cases, the Pardoner
does not practice the same things that he preaches against. He also has an unusual pride, rather
than remorse, in his corrupt behavior. For example, we know from The General Prologue to
The Pardoner s Tale that the Pardoner strongly believes that all evil comes from greed or the
desire for wealth. However, the Pardoner later states, I will have money, wool, and cheese, and
wheat, though it be given by the poorest page, or by the poorest widow in the village, and
though her children perish of famine. This statement expresses how the Pardoner is revealing
his own hypocrisy. He preaches that all evil comes from greed, but then he goes right out and
talks about how he will have money for things he wants such as wool and cheese even if it
requires him to take money from the very poor. The Pardoner s Tale itself also talks about how
greed can lead to evil, since the three men all plotted to kill others just for the sole purpose of
wealth. This makes it unusual that the Pardoner would tell this tale since he didn t demonstrate not
being greedy for money himself. This is the irony that Chaucer was looking for in this tale, which
helps to further enhance his viewpoint on the church. However, this is not the only aspect of

Main Characters In Homer s Odyssey And Virgil s Aeneid
[insert title]
In both Homer s Odyssey and Virgil s Aeneid, the main characters of each poem, Odysseus and
Aeneas, travel to the underworld in search of guidance and the foretelling of fate. In the Odyssey,
this scene is being retold by Odysseus to the Phaiakians, while in the Aeneid, the reader is told the
scene from a third person point of view. Each poet s depiction of the underworld has different
purposes within the text. I argue that Homer s depiction is meant for Odysseus to entertain the
Phaiakians, while Virgil s depiction is meant to instate values within Aeneas. Although both texts
contain many of the same scenes within the underworld, the differing methods of narration between
the texts, and the added details within the Aeneid, greatly change the effects of the scene on
characters within the poems. These differences are important because Odysseus must gain favor
from the Phaiakians, and Aeneas must fulfill his destiny. To support this argument, I will first
discuss each character s journey in the underworld, the descriptions of the underworld, and finally
the purpose within each text.
On each character s journey to and through the underworld, they go seeking one person but have
other experiences that shape the characters and their future journey. Odysseus has been
instructed by Circe to seek Tiresias, and Aeneas was visited by his father in a dream and ordered
to see him in the underworld. Early in the journey for both characters, they encounter an issue
with the unburied dead. Aeneas is told by Sibyl that a friend lies dead... bear him first to his
place of rest (Virgil, Book 6, Line 179 182) before heading to the underworld. This shows the
importance of burying the dead and this is one of the earliest values that Aeneas learns on his
journey. Aeneas must protect and respect his men, even in their deaths. The first soul that
Odysseus encounters in the underworld is that of Elpenor, his dead companion that had not yet
been buried under earth of the wide ways (Homer, Book 11, Line 52). Elpenor begs Odysseus to
burn me there with all my armor that belongs to me, and to give him a proper grave (H, B11,
L74). Odysseus later grants Elpenor s wishes and returns to Aeaea to give him a

A Man For All Seasons, And Elia Kazan s On The Waterfront
Only fools follow their standard of personal integrity. Discuss.
Values and morals are often instilled in people as they grow up, but the extent to which one
chooses to follow these principles can be greatly swayed by how strong their sense of personal
integrity is. As individuals are exposed to an array of varying perspectives and multiple values,
one s own certainty about the interpretation or application of a particular principle may lessen,
opening up the possibility of accepting an alternative position. Robert Bolt s play, A Man For All
Seasons , and Elia Kazan s On the Waterfront, we see that integrity is impossible without a
conscience guided by long reflection upon the inner character of justice.

Bolt s lead character is a man of strict moral righteousness; he never once wavered, which
consequently leads to his fall from grace and untimely death. More is not setting out to be a hero or
martyr. He is a lawyer and sees the law as a way to live peacefully in the world. From his choices, it
is evidently clear that More is no simple common man. He treads the road that only a few mortals
would dare travel down to. His critics see his morality as impractical but for More, his conscience
is the only thing (he) believes to be true . As a man of virtue, More stands alone in the play.
Surrounded by a cast of seemingly weak and basic characters, More s morality is even more
manifest. Such characters as Richard Rich and the Common Man demonstrate how most normal
individuals will be guided by their needs, not their consciences. Rich is intoxicated with avarice
and believes that materialistic items such as clothes and money will gain him the respect and power
that he rightly deserves . More conversely knows well that respect and admiration cannot be
brought and that the integrity of men is to be measured by conduct and not their satisfaction of
hubris.
It is obvious that More understands the nuance of every political move, as he mentions what
would happen if Wolsey falls. He conveys his competence by his careful handling of events.

Jeffersonian Republicanism vs. Jacksonian Democracy
Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson were two influential political figures in two very different
eras, ranging from 1800 1808 and 1808 1840 respectively, that established two very different
political philosophies. Each formed their own system that helped shape the way people think about
American government. Liberalism is a political philosophy that goes against the established status
quo at the time in order for change, where as a conservative is one which adheres to principles
established by that same status quo. The Jeffersonian Republicans image of the common man was

between rich and poor had narrowed, but that there were now few barriers that prevented people
from gaining wealth and power. Because Jackson eradicated the Indian threat (a major concern for

Assignment On Deck Repairs And Costs
Deck Repairs and Costs
The type of wood that comprises your deck will play a big role in determining what repairs are
necessary, and on what timeline. While composite decks are becoming more and more popular,
there s just no denying the beauty and longevity of a wood deck. Wood decks should last for
several decades when properly maintained, and cost less to install than composite decks.
Wood decks also increase the value of your home, and it is estimated that a standard wood deck
will recoup on average 85.4 percent of its cost when the house is sold. In comparison, a composite
deck will only recoup an average 77.6 percent of its total cost.
Regardless of which type of wood your current deck is made of, the following repairs are most
often required at some point in the life of your deck:
Replacing Deck Boards
One of the most common repair projects is replacing deck boards. You might need to do this for a

The Renaissance In Europe And Its Change During The...
During the Middle Ages, Europe was going through a tough time it was characterized by a breakup
of the unified empire, breakdown of trade, abandoned cities, and end of all governments, this led
Europe to be economically weak and not the center of literacy anymore; following it even changing
the dominant language to another. The period that Europewas going through was hectic causing the
breakdown of trade and the population becoming rural, but after every beginning, there s an end
and this started between the 1400 s and the 1500 s. After the Middle Ages, a broad change occurred
which happened to be the renaissancemeaning (rebirth). During this age changes occurred such as
the development of nation states, the emergence of the middle class, the advent of commercial
capitalism and the rise of rationalist thoughts. With the developments of scientific and technological
studies and inventions, it allowed the expansion of learning. The renaissance was a huge impact on
Europe at that time especially Italy where it was energized by the classical learning based on the

changing the country but changing and educating the people. The people before the age of the
renaissance had them feeling depressed and not knowing anything in life except worshiping and

Technology And The Medical Industry
Abstract
Stethoscopes have been around for nearly more than 200 years. From the early modern stethoscopes
made of brass and wood, to common acoustic stethoscopes doctors use these days. Now, digital
/electronic stethoscopes have been invented in which they are advanced and has more uses than
acoustic stethoscopes. However they are much more costly than other stethoscopes and also tend to
be at a heavier weight. These digital stethoscopes provide detailed information and have many
functions to for the doctors to better analyse patients.

Lao Tzu Essay
Born in the Chinese province of Henan, Lao Tzu lived from c. 604 c.531 BCE.
He was a philosopher attributed with the writing of the Tao Te Ching and the reputed founder of
Taoism. ( quot;Tao quot; meaning the way of all life, quot;Te quot; meaning the fit use of life by all
men, and quot;Ching quot; meaning text.) Lao Tzu was not his real name but rather an honorary
title given to him by his followers meaning quot;Old Master quot;.
Lao Tzu believed that human life is constantly influenced by outer forces; not unlike everything
else in the universe. He knew that simplicity was key to all truth and freedom. He always
encouraged those who followed him to observe and to seek to understand the laws of nature. ...

The Taoist philosophy followed an interesting circle. On one hand, that Taoists rejected the
regulation of life and society and preached instead to turn away from it to a solitary meditation of
nature. On the other hand, they believed that by doing this one could ultimately have power enough
to harness the whole universe. That by doing quot;nothing quot; one could accomplish
quot;everything quot;.
In this way Lao Tzu s philosophy reached out to political rulers and advised them of how to
govern their land. Thus Taoism, in a sense became a sort of political philosophy following these
lines: quot; The Taoist has no ambitions, therefore he can never fail. He who never fails always
succeeds. And he who always succeeds is all powerful. quot;
According to legend, nearing the end of his life, Lao Tzu set off into the desert toward what is
now Tibet, sadden and disillusioned that men were so unwilling to follow the path to natural
goodness. When he arrived at the final gate at the Great Wall of China, the gatekeeper convinced
Lao Tzu to record his teachings and the principles of his philosophy before he left. He then
composed in five thousand characters, eighty one sayings that make up the Tao Te Ching. This
ancient Chinese text is the most translated classic worldwide next to the Bible.
From his solitary contemplation of nature, removed from human affairs, Lao Tzu

The Blood Rushing Effect On Readers, And Dracula By Bram...
Only few stories and novels have the blood rushing effect on readers, and Dracula by Bram
Stoker is one of those novels. This novel utilizes the method of using letters and other documents
in order to tell the story. The application of the epistolary technique in the story Dracula proves to
be quite effective because it does enable the reader to foresee the happenings in the story on a
closer and more personal scale. In this novel, the man who writes the letters in Transylvania
experiences a vast amount of supernatural experiences. Within the first four chapters of Dracula,
Jonathan Harker witnesses supernatural occurrence s such as seeing flickering blue lights, how
Jonathan Harker s coachman magically made the were wolves disappear, and how he cannot see
the Count Dracula s reflection in the mirror. In the novel Dracula, Jonathan Harker tries to
overlook these supernatural occurrences because of Mr. Hawkins interest. However, this reason
may not be the most realistic justification in why Jonathan is persistent in his stay, but rather he is
also aware that he is a prisoner. The novel Dracula also has many other supernatural aspects such
as the three women in Count Dracula s house, and how Count Dracula proceeds down the walls in
a lizard like manner. In the novel Dracula, it could be argued that Jonathan Harker is not a reliable
narrator because of the fact that he is the only one in the book experiencing these occurrences and
his mental state is questionable at times. The

A Theoretical Perspective On Organisational Socialisation
Introduction Individuals spend their lives trying to fit in. Fit into their family roles, fit into their
circle of friends and fit into their workplaces. Being a part of a group, a team or an organisations
provides a sense of comfort and belonging. Furthermore, it instills confidence to carry out
respective roles efficiently. The process by which individuals incorporate themselves into society
and into organisations is defined as socialisation (Jablin 2001). Socialisation theories usually focus
on paid workers and their experiences within an organisation (Miller 2012). What they fail to
consider is that volunteers within an organisation are also equally important and in need of the
same guidance and knowledge that paid workers are provided with. Kramer (2010) brings
volunteers to the forefront stating that volunteers are an equal asset to an organisation, especially in
the Non profit sector. The purpose of this research is to explore the process of socialisation among
volunteers in a Non profit organisation. The paper will provide a theoretical perspective on
Organisational Socialisation in terms of its definition and its process. It will then examine how a
particular volunteer socialisation process is applicable in the case of a unique project conducted by
a Non profit organisation. Background The International Society is a Non profit organisation in
Manchester that supports international students in enhancing their experience while studying in the
United Kingdom. It

Chaplain Jim Cosgrove s Poem Stronger Than Grief
Poetry Anthology
Due to the diversity of Australia, the definition of the true Australian identity has changed over
time. However, there are several main attributes that have been embedded into the modern
Australian identity, mate ship, courage, resilience and acceptance. The theme in this anthology is
war, this has been selected as Australia has been through several wars and, it is in these times where
the true Australian identity stands out. It was during several wars where Australia s national
identity was developed and several significant, everlasting attributes were formed, such as, mate
ship, acceptance, courage, resilience and a never giving up attitude. In addition to that as a result of
Australia s diversity and increase in multiculturalism, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This poem is based on families throughout the war, making sense of their loved one s death.
While they are overcome with grief and sorrow, they have an overwhelming sense of appreciation
for what their loved one had achieved in fighting for the country. Chaplain Jim Cosgrove has
portrayed Australians as being very sacrificial, resilient, courageous, this can be seen through
several examples in the poem. In addition to that, throughout the poem it can be seen that the poet
believes mate ship is a fundamental aspect of the Australian identity. Their courage and belief are
even stronger than their grief that their sacrifice is for a worthy cause. This example, in lines 13
and 14, shows the poets views of Australians, that they are brave, courageous and sacrificial. This
is reflected in the Australian identity and supports Australia s dominant cultural values. Another
examples of this is in lines 23 24, In the history of their nation there are many generations whose
sacrifice has made our country free. An example of the poet displaying mate ship as being a
significant aspect of the Australian identity is in lines 17 18, They want to tell their mates to never
doubt or hesitate, to fight this fight against the reign of terror. The poet has used imagery
throughout the poem, to help the reader construct an image. Furthermore, Chaplain Jim Cosgrove
has set a somber and melancholy mood and tone through the choice of words that highlight the
sacrifices made by soldiers in the war. Thus, giving the poem more

Disadvantages Of Corporal Punishment
We all live in a society where our actions are prolific us and may avail us various benefits but at
the same time our actions can be detrimental to the other. Our society has created certain norms
and regulations which are to be followed by each and every person is compelled to follow them in
order to avoid a state of anarchy. Punishment is used as means to reform the wrong doer into a law
abiding citizen. Punishment is the consequence of offence and the kind of punishment that is
imposed on the wrong doer depends upon the kind of society one lives in. Punishment as a means
of social control have been present in our societies since time immemorial and though punishment

Concert Report For A Wind Concert
Eric Fang, Wind Symphony Concert Report On Friday, October twenty second, Simi Valley
High School had their fall concert, however, they only had two bands so there was not much to
write about. The concert band opened up with, Apparitions, by Brian Balmages, which was a
song with a very mysterious intro with the percussion. The song is later developed into a
soprano winds melody which was very well balanced with its counter and support. Unfortunately
before a very beautiful, yet eerie flute solo they were somewhat out of tune, and during it, the
flutes were talking to each other. Later, the soprano melody turns into a brass dominated scene,
with the trumpets being slightly too loud and overtaking the rest of the band. Overall, the piece
was very well executed with great attacks, releases, and flow. However there was little to no
vibrato in the song. After that song, The Magician s Secret, by Joseph Eidson was stated by a
flute squeak, but evens out into a nice jumpy beginning. Throughout the many brass and high
winds chords, they were mostly out of tune, but the pulsing and tempo was very well done and
controlled which gave the theme of smoothness and elegance. While the band was going great
with strong and obvious dynamics, one of the trumpets messed up and showed it. Luckily, a great
story of adventure and curiosity manage to cover him up and retain the moving melody. As the
song ended, I personally felt the end was a bit too staccato and the overall song had no

throughout his life including, A Midsummer Night s Dream , Macbeth and Hamlet . In total he
wrote thirty seven plays! He also wrote lots of sonnets (poems). He was born in Stratford Upon
Avon and experts believe he was born around the 23rd of April, 1564. He was educated at the
Kings School in Stratford, but didn t go to university. In 1585 he married Anne Hathaway, after
moving to London, when he began writing. They had three children two twin sons and a
daughter. The Globe theatre was built in 1599 where Shakespeare showed of his work. The
name, Globe, came from everyone in the world is an actor . the plays were always performed in
the day, as there was not enough money for candles. There was no roof so this is why the
cheapest seats were under it. the groundlings would go in the pit under the stage and throw
things at the actors if they didn t like the play! The most expensive seats were high up and had
the beat sound, but not the best view. The theatre burned down twice! Shakespeare died in 1616
on his birthday of unknown causes. One of Shakespeare s most famous plays is Romeo and
Juliet . The story takes place in Fair Verona, Italy. There are two main, very important families

Montague) and Juliet (a Capulet) fall in love, but they must keep it a secret. Their families

not informed of the new plan and finds her dead . He then poisons himself and dies. Juliet wakes
up from her sleep and realises he is dead and kills herself aswell so they can be together . The
director of the film, Baz Lurhman, decided he wanted to make a new version of Romeo and
Juliet. He was aware that he would face some difficulties as the producers were worried that mix
of modern and original Shakespeare just would not work and the film wouldn t sell. He decided to
use a modern setting, but keep the modern language to stay true to Shakespeare. He did this by

Ethics In Night
What is theological ethics? That is the question we have been trying to answer throughout this
semester. We have read Night by Elie Wiesel who was a teenager when he was taken to
concentration camps. How can his story of survival, help us keep our faith and live a moral life?
We also read The Moral Disciple by Kent A. Van Til. He shows us that being a moral disciple is a
way to become a good person. How can living morally, help us live ethically? The next book we
read is Fear of the Other by William H. Willimon. Willimon shows us examples of immoral acts in
today s society. Can we change to act differently even though some social norms are immoral? The
final book we read is titled The Good Life by Richard Gula. He gives us what a good life should be
and how we can live it. As well as these readings, we read Genesis, Exodus and Matthew. These
three books in the Bible give us the basis of Christian Ethics. All of these readings come together to
one conclusion. In this paper, I will talk about how all of these readings connect to prove that we
are all creatures. Night is a story about Elie Wiesel who was a teenager when he and his family
were taken from their home to concentration camps. This novel gives us a chilling depiction of the
terrifying scenes he saw including the death of his family and almost the death of his faith in God.

Taking a Stand on Land, Forest, Wildlife Management
From the age of 15 I have had a job and was always better at work than school. It wasn t until
recently that I decided I need a change, so I chose to start college. My love of fishing and the
outdoors made the decision easy when it came to choosing my major, Land Forestry Wildlife
Management. Although the decision came easy and I feel it is the right career for me, there are
many issues, positive and negative, related to my field. Land, Forest, Wildlife Managementdoes a
lot of good for people and animals but can also hurt. Prescribed burning, wildlifecontrol and forest
management are all big issues related to the field. Prescribed burning, also called controlled burns,
has many purposes. The American Indians set fireto stimulate the development of plants and keep
areas open to produce food (Minnesota Department of Natural Resources). Prescribed fires help
improve wildlife habitat and soil quality. After the burns, the brush grows back greener and
lusher, providing nesting areas for creatures such as deer. In addition, prescribed fires are a
cheaper way to manage vegetation as they require no bulldozing, cutting, or chemicals (Minnesota
Department of Natural Resources). Many argue that prescribed burning is dangerous, but so are
other things, including some things people do on a daily basis. For instance, driving a car. Just
starting the car alone creates a spark that ignites combustion in the cylinders. A spark combined
with gasoline in the car is a dangerous

The Grandmother is one of the major characters in A Good Man is Hard to Finda short storywritten by Flannery O Conner in 1955. The welfare reform system s goal was to get people off the welfare system and onto the job market. The hope was to move people from dependency to self reliance. Opposition to the new welfare reform system has occurred. Some believe support in a welfare to work program might create new problems for children by adding strains to family life or by exposing children to poor substitute care arrangements for policies that design welfare to work programs that pursue the dual goals of economic self sufficiency for families and healthy development of children. (http:/ /www.nga.org/welfare/employmentretentationemployed.htm). Welfare policies aimed at improving family circumstances for both children and parents must not make the error of focusing solely on parents; if the intention is to enhance the immediate and long term development of both generations within the family, then policies must differentiate between youth and their parents. These issues have brought about numerous debates. These debates have focused on the welfare reform system. Still in the debate are the pros and cons of this new system, focusing on the welfare of the child, the parent, the employer, and the taxpayer. • 13. Determinism In Jack London s To Build A Fire An Analytic Jack London s story named To Build a Fire has many themes attached to it. Through this story, the author attempts to convey messages regarding man s mental makeup and process. The overall theme is one of a battle between naturalism and determinism and various themes linking the two. Determinism argues that man does not have free will but rather their circumstances are shaped by their environmental or biological makeup (which is out of their control). In the story, the concept of determinism is what provides context to the fact that life is amoral; the man defines any negative outcomes as a lack of luck or an accident which gives credence to the fact that the story starts out as deterministic in nature. The concept of determinism ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... On the other hand, the story portrayed the dog as having great instinct in that even though it does not have the intellectual ability to understand the cold; it instinctively bites the ice forming between its toes. It is possible to glean from the story that the man is actually fighting against nature to survive, but the environment does not have any link to the struggles of the man. It is not nature s determination to hurt the man; rather that nature is indifferent to its inhabitants. The relentless force of nature causes the man in the story to change his goal after a couple of accidents . From the hate lyrics of Gun s N Roses to the satanic lyrics of Montley Crue and Marilyn Manson to the sexually explicit graphical content of today s movies, the issue is how much society is going to permit and where we, as a society, should we draw the line. While some people feel that government officials are the best way to restrict offensive messages, others feel that self censorship is a more effective method. A recent series of incidents suggests that executives in many private firms have begun doing just that. Book publishers, TV stations, and others have drawn the line when faced with words or images that are tasteless or offensive. For example, in 1990, Andy Rooney, a CBS news correspondent, was suspended for his racist remark, Blacks have watered down their genes because the less intelligent ones... have the most children. Another episode of self imposed censorship is when George Michael released his song I Want Your Sex. In 1987, AIDS and other sexual diseases were rampantly spreading and his song condoned casual sex. The MTV executives also sent the video for this song back because of the explicit, sexual images. A third incident happened when MTV drew the line again, this time with Madonna s video for Justify My Love. They said that the video illustrates Madonna s erotic fantasies. It was said to be too hot to handle. The advocates of the second solution agree that America is suffering from a deluge of offensive messages, but they feel that the best way of dealing with the problem is not government censorship, but private sector censorship. The critics of this point of view think that private sector censorship will not be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The essay informs the reader of the traits the two characters have in common including their cocky personalities and their impossible strength. It also mentions the many opposing characteristics of the two characters including how brave or cowardly they are, and weather or not they want to help or hurt people. Many direct quotes from the epic Beowulfare also within the essay to help support each allegation, giving proof to the characteristics identified. Compare and Contrasting Beowulf and Grendel There is a hero and a villain in every story, we have: Batman and The Joker, Spider Man and The Green Goblin, Thor and Loki, and of course Beowulf and Grendel. In the epic Beowulf our two main characters are Beowulf the hero of the story, and Grendel the evil demon who terrorized the world. In the epic, Beowulf and Grendel are noticeably different, but at the same time alike in many ways. The people in the story may not have notice the similarities, but they could not be hidden from the peering eye of the reader. In the story Beowulf was was brave, while Grendel was cowardly, Beowulf was helpful, while Grendel only wanted to hurt people; in comparison, they were both unnaturally strong and very arrogant. To begin, one of the many ways that Beowulf was different than Grendel is that Beowulf was brave. Every night Grendel snuck into Herot Hall to destroy King Hrothgar s men. He did this while hiding in the shadows, sneaking around in the dead of night, and attacking while the men we asleep and at there most vulnerable. These are not the characteristics the brave, these are the characteristics of a foul, loathsome, cowardly beast. The air taxi industry is very different from the original airline industry. For Linear air at least, they handle bookings on a per plane, per hour basis. This scheduling model helps to eliminate the problem that commercial airlines have because there will be no planes flying for little to no reason. By this, I mean that a lot of commercial flights end up flying with several empty seats or seats sold at a discounted rate. With the high cost of flying a larger plane, when seats are empty or sold for less it is almost not worth it to have that flight in the first place. For Linear air, charging on a per plane basis allows them to ensure that no plane is flown without need. Along with this, the air taxi industry works around customer need, and customers have the ability to book flights with shorter notice. Precious Obaro Gems Wellington International School Dubai Author Note Introduction This paper will be comparing and providing an evaluation of the extent to which genetic information plays a role in the human intelligence in relation to IQ levels in monozygotic and dizygotic twins. Human intelligence is defined as the ability to mentally solve, learn and reason and due to its nature, intelligence integrates cognitive functions such as perception, memory, language and planning. As a grand basis of the definition of intelligence, intelligence can be calculated and evaluated with the help of standardized testing known as IQ testing. IQ is a quotient of intelligence. (Colom, R., Karama, S., Jung, R. E., Haier, R. J. (n.d.). Human intelligence and brain networks.). • 32. Discuss The Use Of Irony In The Pardoner s Tale Grant Sauber Mr. Jason Robinson English 12 Honors 19 October 2014 Canterbury Tales Essay The use of irony has had a profound effect on the world of literature as it is seen in The Canterbury Tales. Irony can help shape the reader s perception on the theme of the novel as a whole. Throughout the tales, Chaucer subtly uses irony to criticize different aspects of his society. This irony is namely used in The General Prologue , The Pardoner s Tale , and The Miller s Tale . Therefore, by looking at these various tales in the novel, one can see how Chaucer uses irony to critique society. One way that Chaucer uses this irony is in The General Prologue when he describes all the different characters. This allows him to interject various facts... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In short, the Pardoner s tale was a lesson. Chaucer uses The Pardoner s Tale to reveal the hypocrisy of the Pardoner himself in multiple cases. Mostly in all of these cases, the Pardoner does not practice the same things that he preaches against. He also has an unusual pride, rather than remorse, in his corrupt behavior. For example, we know from The General Prologue to The Pardoner s Tale that the Pardoner strongly believes that all evil comes from greed or the desire for wealth. However, the Pardoner later states, I will have money, wool, and cheese, and wheat, though it be given by the poorest page, or by the poorest widow in the village, and though her children perish of famine. This statement expresses how the Pardoner is revealing his own hypocrisy. He preaches that all evil comes from greed, but then he goes right out and talks about how he will have money for things he wants such as wool and cheese even if it requires him to take money from the very poor. The Pardoner s Tale itself also talks about how greed can lead to evil, since the three men all plotted to kill others just for the sole purpose of wealth. This makes it unusual that the Pardoner would tell this tale since he didn t demonstrate not being greedy for money himself. This is the irony that Chaucer was looking for in this tale, which helps to further enhance his viewpoint on the church. However, this is not the only aspect of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Main Characters In Homer s Odyssey And Virgil s Aeneid [insert title] In both Homer s Odyssey and Virgil s Aeneid, the main characters of each poem, Odysseus and Aeneas, travel to the underworld in search of guidance and the foretelling of fate. In the Odyssey, this scene is being retold by Odysseus to the Phaiakians, while in the Aeneid, the reader is told the scene from a third person point of view. Each poet s depiction of the underworld has different purposes within the text. I argue that Homer s depiction is meant for Odysseus to entertain the Phaiakians, while Virgil s depiction is meant to instate values within Aeneas. Although both texts contain many of the same scenes within the underworld, the differing methods of narration between the texts, and the added details within the Aeneid, greatly change the effects of the scene on characters within the poems. These differences are important because Odysseus must gain favor from the Phaiakians, and Aeneas must fulfill his destiny. To support this argument, I will first discuss each character s journey in the underworld, the descriptions of the underworld, and finally the purpose within each text. On each character s journey to and through the underworld, they go seeking one person but have other experiences that shape the characters and their future journey. Odysseus has been instructed by Circe to seek Tiresias, and Aeneas was visited by his father in a dream and ordered to see him in the underworld. Early in the journey for both characters, they encounter an issue with the unburied dead. Aeneas is told by Sibyl that a friend lies dead... bear him first to his place of rest (Virgil, Book 6, Line 179 182) before heading to the underworld. This shows the importance of burying the dead and this is one of the earliest values that Aeneas learns on his journey. Aeneas must protect and respect his men, even in their deaths. The first soul that Odysseus encounters in the underworld is that of Elpenor, his dead companion that had not yet been buried under earth of the wide ways (Homer, Book 11, Line 52). Elpenor begs Odysseus to burn me there with all my armor that belongs to me, and to give him a proper grave (H, B11, L74). Rich is intoxicated with avarice and believes that materialistic items such as clothes and money will gain him the respect and power that he rightly deserves . This novel utilizes the method of using letters and other documents in order to tell the story. In this novel, the man who writes the letters in Transylvania experiences a vast amount of supernatural experiences. Within the first four chapters of Dracula, Jonathan Harker witnesses supernatural occurrence s such as seeing flickering blue lights, how Jonathan Harker s coachman magically made the were wolves disappear, and how he cannot see the Count Dracula s reflection in the mirror. Furthermore, Chaplain Jim Cosgrove has set a somber and melancholy mood and tone through the choice of words that highlight the sacrifices made by soldiers in the war. Thus, giving the poem more ... • 50. Concert Report For A Wind Concert Eric Fang, Wind Symphony Concert Report On Friday, October twenty second, Simi Valley High School had their fall concert, however, they only had two bands so there was not much to write about. The concert band opened up with, Apparitions, by Brian Balmages, which was a song with a very mysterious intro with the percussion. The song is later developed into a soprano winds melody which was very well balanced with its counter and support. Unfortunately before a very beautiful, yet eerie flute solo they were somewhat out of tune, and during it, the flutes were talking to each other. Later, the soprano melody turns into a brass dominated scene, with the trumpets being slightly too loud and overtaking the rest of the band. Overall, the piece was very well executed with great attacks, releases, and flow. However there was little to no vibrato in the song. After that song, The Magician s Secret, by Joseph Eidson was stated by a flute squeak, but evens out into a nice jumpy beginning. Throughout the many brass and high winds chords, they were mostly out of tune, but the pulsing and tempo was very well done and controlled which gave the theme of smoothness and elegance. While the band was going great with strong and obvious dynamics, one of the trumpets messed up and showed it. Luckily, a great story of adventure and curiosity manage to cover him up and retain the moving melody. As the song ended, I personally felt the end was a bit too staccato and the overall song had no ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

We have read Night by Elie Wiesel who was a teenager when he was taken to concentration camps. How can his story of survival, help us keep our faith and live a moral life? We also read The Moral Disciple by Kent A. Van Til. He shows us that being a moral disciple is a way to become a good person. How can living morally, help us live ethically? The next book we read is Fear of the Other by William H. Willimon. Willimon shows us examples of immoral acts in today s society. Can we change to act differently even though some social norms are immoral? The final book we read is titled The Good Life by Richard Gula. He gives us what a good life should be and how we can live it. As well as these readings, we read Genesis, Exodus and Matthew. These three books in the Bible give us the basis of Christian Ethics. All of these readings come together to one conclusion. In this paper, I will talk about how all of these readings connect to prove that we are all creatures. • 53. Taking a Stand on Land, Forest, Wildlife Management From the age of 15 I have had a job and was always better at work than school. It wasn t until recently that I decided I need a change, so I chose to start college. My love of fishing and the outdoors made the decision easy when it came to choosing my major, Land Forestry Wildlife Management. Although the decision came easy and I feel it is the right career for me, there are many issues, positive and negative, related to my field. Land, Forest, Wildlife Managementdoes a lot of good for people and animals but can also hurt. Prescribed burning, wildlifecontrol and forest management are all big issues related to the field. Prescribed burning, also called controlled burns, has many purposes. The American Indians set fireto stimulate the development of plants and keep areas open to produce food (Minnesota Department of Natural Resources). Prescribed fires help improve wildlife habitat and soil quality. After the burns, the brush grows back greener and lusher, providing nesting areas for creatures such as deer. In addition, prescribed fires are a cheaper way to manage vegetation as they require no bulldozing, cutting, or chemicals (Minnesota Department of Natural Resources). Many argue that prescribed burning is dangerous, but so are other things, including some things people do on a daily basis. For instance, driving a car. Just starting the car alone creates a spark that ignites combustion in the cylinders. A spark combined with gasoline in the car is a dangerous ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
