As a Jesuit priest, Gerard Manly Hopkins devoted many years of his life to spiritual study and
instruction. As seen in his poem God s Grandeur , Hopkins translated his intense spirituality into
poems that explore the relationship between humans and the natural world as an expression of God

Here, Hopkins establishes a connection between God s grandeur and light, which he continues in
the second stanza with his description of the sunrise brought forth by the possibility of rebirth as
well as continuity in nature. Although the sun sets in the black west, morning, at the brown brink
eastward, springs (12). The sun, a source of energy so far superior to any source to any man made
source, becomes an expression of God s care for the Earth, offering the possibility of freshness and
growth despite all of man s abuses.
Hopkins outlines some of these abuses in the first stanza, in which a rather bleak picture of man s
interaction with the earth contrasts to the brightness of God s light. During the Victorian Age of
mass production, people gradually drew away from small rural farms into the dismal urban world
of factories and mills. Hopkins laments that such so called progress has drawn man away from the
land. The sun, God s ultimate source of light and life, shines upon soil that Is bare now, abandoned
for the urban life (8). That Hopkins chooses to say now in reference to the barren earth suggests a
dramatic and negative change from the past. While not condemning the contemporary changes,
Hopkins regrets that man s progress has so negatively impacted both the natural world and man
himself.

discussions, and a film. In class, the slideshows theme was on gender. Then we had discussion

In the two versions of Cinderella, Aschenputtel by the Grimm Brothers and Cinderella or the
Little Glass Slipper by Charles Perrault, there are many things to compare with the two. The
Grimm Bothers are known for their darker versions of everyone s favorite fairytales. However,
Charles Perrault wrote these fairytales more so for children, and his versions are what Disney
based their animated movies off of. Although there are many similarities, the differences are what

The two stories have two completely different magical sources, which drastically changes the
ending in the two versions. In Aschenputtel, Cinderella receives her magic from the two magic
white birds that appear at her mother s grave. However, in the Little Glass Slipper, Cinderella has
a godmother that appears when she begins to cry that she cannot go to the ball. The way the
magic comes from these two sources are different obviously. For the birds in Aschenputtel, they
