Positive And Negative Effects Of Modern Technology
Modern Technology has had a great deal of influence on how we process information in the twenty
first Century. Business flourishes with the use of e mails to send for conferences or important
information in seconds, while the use of Skype has vastly increased how they interact in conferences
from all over the world. News was once posted once a day only through the papers and television, if
the information was not seen then it was not known to have happen whereas today, anytime of the day,
current or former information can be accessed. Children today will be interacting with their friends in
seconds and do not have to make plans ahead of time. However, people have abused how the Internet
was intended to be which has led to some undeniable, severe consequences. Technology has
negatively impacted how humans communicate through replacing the human connection, making
peoples attention span shorter than it used to be, and providing a need for people to receive shallow
and instant gratification about how people view a topic. Technological devices, experts assure us, are
becoming insensitive, instant human substitutes for the conventional user. Sherry Turkle, a Doctor of
Social Studies and Technology at MIT, states, We turn to machines for companionship even as we
seem pained or inconvenienced to...texting offers the right amount of access, the right amount of
control to distance people not too far or close (Turkle 2011). People are connected through the internet

Family Policy Explanation Paper
Introduction Breastfeeding has numerous benefits for both mother and child. Children who are
breastfed are more resistant to health issues like juvenile diabetes, multiple sclerosis, heart disease,
and infections. Breast milk provides a unique source of nutrition that helps fight these issues and
cannot be replaced with other food, including formula. Mothers who are breastfeeding are less likely
to develop osteoporosis, lower risk of breast, uterine and ovarian cancer. Despite these benefits to both
mother and child there has been much stigma on the topic of breastfeeding in public areas.

The authors inform the readers that in the state of New York in the year 1984 the first law on
breastfeeding was passed, exempting breastfeeding in public as an indecency offence (Nguyen
Hawkins, 2013). In regards to the employment break time and accommodations section, Nguyen and
Hawkins (2013) inform the reader that a total of nine teen states encourage or require provisions for
private accommodation and break times where breastfeed or express milk. Only eight states forbid an
employer to discriminate against any breastfeeding based actions or breaks (Nguyen Hawkins, 2013).
Forty seven states allow mothers to breastfeed in any public or private areas that she herself is allowed
to be at (Nguyen Hawkins, 2013). The number of states that exempt mothers from public indecency is
twenty nine states (Nguyen Hawkins, 2013). Twelve states allows mothers who are breastfeeding to be
exempt from participating in jury duty. Nguyen and Hawkins (2013) express hat it is important that

Historical Development of Security Forces and Policy...
Historical Development of Security Forces: The historical development of security forces and policy
making in crime and justice from civilization period to the establishment of contemporary nation
states and governments mainly involves the evolution of law and legal structures. Some of the various
codes of law and justice that have been promulgated at different periods of history include: The Code
of Hammurabi: This is the earliest code of written and public laws that was developed in Babylonia
approximately 2,000 years before Christ. While this ancient legal code was promulgated by Emperor
Hammurabi, it was popularly accepted as a law of divine origin that helped reinforce its legitimacy.
Since it dealt with various aspects, the Code of Hammurabi established the idea of restorative and
retributive justice (Shahidullah, 2008, p. 3). Draco s Law: This code of law was originally written by
an Athenian legislator as a strict legal code for Greece around 621 B.C. Draco s law stated that it was
the state s responsibility to punish offenders instead of private citizens as many people were sentenced
to death for crimes. Law of the Twelve Tables: The introduction of the Twelve Tables around 450 B.C.
was the most significant ancient legal code of the Roman Law. The development of this law involved
10 Roman men who had total control in writing laws to govern Roman citizens (Limbaugh, 2010).
Based on the concept of safeguarding the lower class from political elites, the law

Analysis Of John Proctor In The Crucible
People s true character is revealed through their actions. Their morals and ethics can be told from how
they choose to act in a situation. In Arthur Miller s The Crucible; the character of John Proctor is an
honorable man despite having committed wrongful acts. He was able to redeem himself through acts
that is considered courageous, such as when he refuses to contribute to the lie of witchcraft in Salem,
when he fights for the people who were convicted of witchcraft and when he regrets being a dishonest
man. John Proctor showed his good nature many times throughout the play. In the last act, John
Proctor refused to confess to the lie of practicing witchcraft. He did not want to take part in the
problem and lose his dignity by admitting a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He does this with the intention of exposing Abigail s spiteful character and her main desire to replace
his wife. John Proctor says I beg you sir, I beg you see her what she is...She thinks to dance with me
on my wife s grave. And well she might, for I thought of her softly. God help me, I lusted and there is
a promise in such sweat. But it is a whore s vengeance and you must see it. I set myself entirely in
your hands. I know you must see it now (110) John Proctor exposes not only Abigail s sins, but also
the fact that he was infatuated with Abigail. He knows that by doing this he would dishonor his name,
but he deems it as the only solution because people were falling into Abigail s manipulation., John
Proctor also fights for everyone not just his wife. John Proctor continues his attempt to voice out the
truth even though his wife was exempted from being punished because she was pregnant. He defends
other people because he knows their innocence. The people signing it declare their good opinion of
Rebecca, and my wife and Martha Corey...these are all landholding farmers, members of the church,
sir they ve known the women many years and never saw no sign they had dealing with the Devil (93)
John Proctor protects everyone s names because he recognizes that they have no reason to be jailed,
thus showing his kindness and consideration. Lastly, John Proctor

The Evolution Of Young Earth Creationism
Young earth creationism is what most people mean when referring to creationism. This is primarily
due to the fact that the creationists most visible in the public eye during the creation evolution debate
were most likely to hold young earth creationist views. Additionally, the terms recent earth or recent
creation have been used to refer to this same position. These terms clearly define their position as one
in which the creation of the world occurred somewhat recently, that is, the world is young. However, it
obviously doesn t provide us with much information beyond that. To begin with, how young is the
world? In order to help answer this and other questions concerning young earth creationism, biologist
and philosopher of science ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The next point Nelson and Reynolds make is one of disagreement between young earth and
progressive creationists. Concerning the impact of the curse in Genesis 3, young earth creationists
typically view this point to be the entrance of all death and suffering to the world. Progressive
creationists, however, consider there to be a long period of time between the creation of the world and
the introduction of sin into the world. Because of this length of time, progressive creationists consider
animal death and suffering to have occurred long before the first humans sinned. The question of
animal death and suffering prior to the fall of mankind is one that will be discussed in further detail
when looking at the old earth positions
According to Nelson and Reynolds, the strongest point of contention between young earth and
progressive creationists is that of the flood. Young earth creationists generally view the account of the
flood as actually having occurred. Other positions, however, progressive included, consider it a
metaphor, or myth which has theological implications, but does not describe any actual historical
events.

Study Of The Airline Industry Resilience And The Terrorist...
Finally, Company Size, Industry, Company Ownership, Organizational Design (Czinkota et al., 2010),
and Firm Age are introduced in the model to control for factors beyond relationships that could
influence the dependent variable of performance resilience. Data Analysis The research method relies
upon the general methodological framework used by Gittell et al. (2006) in the study of the airlines
industry resilience to the terrorist attacks of 9/11. This exploratory archival data analysis employs
quantitative statistical techniques from the terrorism and international business literature stream.
Initially, correlation analysis between the operationalized independent variables, moderating variables,
control variables and the dependent variable will be conducted, using Pearson Correlation Coefficients
as a measure, to identify and evaluate non causal associations and strengths of relationships between
variables. In addition, scatterplots would be created of the variables to determine whether linear
relationships exist. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) would be used as the general structure for
statistical testing of the conceptual model, shown in Figure 4, using the F test. Moreover, the F test
would be an initial overall inference test of the operationalized conceptual model. Furthermore,
collinearity diagnostics tests for multi collinearity on the independent and moderating variables will be
performed using Variance Inflation Factors as a gauge to assess any overlap or

3.1 PESTEL Analysis The PESTEL analysis can be used to analysis the market environment in which
HTC operates in, they include: Political Factors and Legal Factors * Due to the high tech nature of the
industry, products from various companies are heavily patented and since similar technology is used
between manufacturers, infringement of these patents can lead to very costly lawsuits against the
company. * In 2008 as well 2010, lawsuits were filed against HTC by companies such as Apple and
IPCom claiming that HTC infringed upon their patents and demanded compensation such as to
prevent the company from exporting their products into certain countries (Datamonitor, 2011). *
Possible infringement of intellectual property in the future which if proven would result in large
compensation in money as well as damaging the brand image. Economic Factors * Since the company
operates on the global scale and since most of their revenue comes from international markets, HTC
would be positively or negative affected by fluctuation in the exchange rates. * Due to high operating
expenses overseas, such as high cost of labour and taxation, HTC s operating margins have dropped
from 19.9% in 2008 to 15.8% in 2010. However, these margins are considered low when compared to
their competitors (Datamonitor, 2011). Social Factors * According to several report, the demand of

Essay on African Diaspora
Part 1: Question one is what is the African diaspora? (Who should be considered in the African
diaspora? How is this like the black Atlantic and how is it different?). Students should use the Colin
Palmer piece to answer this question. In its most recognizable form, the African diaspora refers to the
many cultures and societies abroad that exist throughout the world as the result of the historic
movement, mostly forced, of native Africans to other parts of the globe. Most specifically, the African
diaspora is the blanket term used to represent a confluence of events that led to the forced
displacement of millions of innocent people. The term first originated in the 1950s and initial studies
focused on the dispersal of people of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
No diasporic community manifests all of these characteristics or shares with the same intensity an
identity with its scattered ancestral kin. In many respects, diasporas are not actual but imaginary and
symbolic communities and political constructs; it is we who often call them into being. (Palmer) It is
essential to note that the term African Diaspora does not describe any single event, group of people or
set of customs. It represents a current state of being for many citizens of the world and provides
context for understanding the social structures and intercultural relationships of the world we live in
today. Collin Palmer provides great insight into the context of diaspora. He writes that there have been
several movements, massive migrations of people, throughout history. There is no single diasporic
movement or monolithic diasporic community to be studied, but rather a confluence of people, events
and ideologies that span thousands of years, across every continent. Each period of movement, each
diasporic stream, happened for different reasons. Palmer s approach to the African Diaspora begins
with a look nearly 100,000 years into the past. He identifies five major streams, with the first African
diaspora that occurred as a

Emirates Political stability data, chart 1996 2015, n.d).The above graph displays data for only three
years from 2012 2015, as five years is an appropriate set of data to look at from the year 2018, with

For the foreign currency control, the UAE has no restrictions or regulations on foreign exchange
(United Arab Emirates Currency and Banking IPR Country, n.d). This is good news for the foreign
investor as there are no restrictions on the foreign exchange rate. As the result, UAE will attract more
foreigners to invest within the country or have more foreigners to move to the UAE for work.
Mubarak Rashid Khamis Al Mansouri, UAE s Central Bank Governor, made a statement mentioning
that fixing and safeguarding the official exchange rate of the Dirham falls by law within the purview
of the central bank s board of directors, and that the policy of the fixed peg of the Dirham against the
US Dollar will remain in place (Nagrai, 2016). The UAE currency exchange rate had been fixed
around 3.6725 per 1 US Dollar since 2000 s and will remain the same, as it has been stable in the
economy for multiple years. Economic indicators highly recommend the government to keep the
currency exchange rate at a fixed peg of the Dirham against the US Dollar since it is doing well.
Furthermore, with the community not being democratic, the government will not change their decision
on this system unless there is a boom in the economy. UAE is experiencing growth in the economy by
having both imports and exports to rely on resources such as oil and gas. UAE has seventh

A Man And His Methods
A Man and His Methods
In the short film Method Actor by Justin Stokes, a seasoned actor is discussing his career in what
appears to be an interview; the discussion goes along and we discover that he prefers the process of
method acting, a technique in which you become the character which you re playing. A technique Lee
Strasberg referred to as what all actors have always done whenever they acted well. Yet, as the actor
clearly showcases, this method can push some minds over the brink. The old man has played many
roles ... the clown, the hero, the lover, the philosopher,... (Stokes.) He hesitates on his latest role, which
was the murderer, which raises the question, how could he tap into that role? How can one remain
rational after adopting such a drastic, hazardous mindset? Just as these questions arise into the minds
of the viewer, the camera loses focus behind a barred window and the scene concludes. The film is
riddled with pieces of evidence to help the viewer better understand exactly how he did it. The
cinematography in this scene gives us the first of the insight into the old man s mind. The movie
begins with the actor looking out of a window with a pile of photos under his feet. He seems to be
completely oblivious of the camera. He then walks his way to an old mirror and stares at himself, then
his monologue begins. (Stokes) This will gain more relevance as the scene goes on. There are several
times when the actor is talking and the camera suddenly cuts to

The Battle Of The Crusades In The Song Of Roland
In the epic poem, The Song of Roland the tale depicts the Battle at Rencevaux in which the
protagonist is betrayed and serves as a martyr to justify the Crusades. The Crusades were a medieval
military expedition by the Roman Catholics to purge the Muslims from the Holy Land. With this
definition of the Crusades, one can conclude that the Song of Roland should not be considered apart of
the Crusades as the poem s context is historically inaccurate, written long after the events, and lacks a
credible source. Instead, this depiction should just be considered as a folk tale that was used to drive
the crusaders to keep fighting. The story of heroism in this poem was no doubt a motivational tool that
inspired soldiers to persevere and uproot the Muslims from the Holy Land. The Song of Roland dates
back to early 12th century, in the midst of the Crusades. The original battle was called the Battle of
Roncevaux Pass which took place in 778 AD, long before the epic poem dates back to. For one to
even consider this poem as the first battle of the Crusades the poem would have be written relatively
soon after the battle. Some scholars speculate that the poem was written around the time that the battle
took place but there is no evidence to support their theory as the only written copies date back
between 1129 and 1165 AD. These dates place the written poem in the middle of the Crusades.
Furthermore, this strengthens the idea that the poem is not a accurate description of what actually
happened on that day. Instead, this epic poem was written for another purpose, the purpose of
inspiring the current knights of the glory and honor that can be gained from this Holy War. With the
date of the Song of Roland being nearly four hundred years after the actual battle one could see the
potential problems with the details of the story. Having no previous records, experts aren t sure
whether the epic poem was changed on purpose, or if parts of it were forgotten. Although the tale
conveys a sense of heroism and pride, it there are many details that are historically inaccurate. For
example, in the Song of Roland , the author describes the opposing forces as Saracens . This term
Saracen is used by many authors at the time

Comparison Between Ghost World By Terry Zwigoff Essay
Feminist Relationship Issues of Enide, Rebecca, Maggie and Hopey The comparison and contrast
between Ghost World, the movie, directed by Terry Zwigoff and written by Daniel Clowes brings
graphic novel characters to life. Both stories give the readers realistic and very interesting examination
of two relationships between a variety of teenage girls. In Ghost World, Enid and Rebecca, we catch a
glimpse into their view of the world, not entirely invalid, and sometimes certainly childish and
superficial. Their activities gave them pleasure, but are not as much fun as they used to be. The world
of Enid and Rebecca ultimately changes, despite their personal desires. In contrast to Maggie and
Hopey in Maggie the Mechanic, most of their stories focus on their antics. This series focuses more on
the sexual tension between Hopey and Maggie. Hopey, who is a lesbian, is desperately in love with
the primarily heterosexual Maggie, and she makes it clear to Maggie that she s always there for her.
This essay will focus on certain aspects of feminist relationships, such as bonding, communication
issues, differences and similarities. In Ghost World, The female characters, Enid and Rebecca, are
bonded together by their hatred of the world around them; they are ghosts, who live in the shadow
between a young adult and mature adult. Enid and Rebecca friendship bond is not an example of a
perfect alliance. Their friendship is surrounded by many problems that they won t address or talk

How Did The Spanish Treat The Native Americans
The Spanish reacted peacefully to the lifestyle of the Natives. For example, when they established
their rule in America, they did not destroy and ruin the culture and heritage of the Native
Americas. Also, intermarriages between the Spanish and the Native Americans became very common
since many Spanish conquistadors were males in their 20s. As a result of intermarriage, a new
ethnicity was formed; this ethnicity was called mestizos. Mestizos established a cultural peace
between the Spanish and the Natives. Culturally, the Spanish and the Natives lived in tranquility.
When it came to the economics, the Spanish did not respond so peacefully; they were acted harshly.
Spanish conquistadors originally established their rule in colonial America in search of gold and silver.
Throughout their rule, they have not forgotten their main goal. For example, the Spanish deprived the
Natives of their resources, and forced them into slavery. The Native Americans were ordered to work
in gold and silver mines. Another example of the Spanish behaving brutally towards the Natives was
when Cortez conquered the Aztecs. After he had besieged their capital city, Cortez had already robbed
the Aztec s resources. The Spanish did not play nicely when it came down to wealth and resources. ...

Mabo Decision Essay
The Mabo decision was a significant event for the civil right of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
people. Discuss.
The Mabo decision took place in 1974, it was a significant event for the civil right of Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander peoples. Before the Mabo case, indigenous people did not receive the basic
human right in Australia, they have to fight, in order to vote, paid equally, to be served in shops and go
to public places with the white Australian. In 1974, Eddie Mabo discovered that the island they live in

The Minimum Wage
There have been multiple debates on whether or not the minimum wage should be raised. Minimum
wage can produce an impact on everyday life more than most may think. It is not just about more
money in a person s pocket; it can affect the economy in multiple ways. Many people think it would
be a good idea to raise the average minimum wage, but they do not understand or take the time to
think of the disadvantages. The minimum wage is the least amount a worker can be paid at a job, by
federal law. The present minimum wage is set at seven dollars and 25 cents. The wage can be
determined by votes of the public or the average living cost. Before the Fair Labor Standards Act,
corporations were free to choose any pay rate of their choice. This ... Show more content on

Another disadvantage to a rise in pay includes the possibility that some people may lose their
government benefits due to their new annual income, such as food stamps or health insurance.
The loss of federal and state aids could produce a greater hardship on people and their families than
the preexisting minimum wage. For those who have already earned a higher pay due to noticeably
hard work or time spent working for a company, the raise of minimum wage would cause the
experienced workers to demand more. If the company is already struggling to pay the difference of the
raised minimum wage, there will be no option but to either refuse the request of an experienced
worker or fire employees. Even though workers have dreamed of a pay raise for years, it has been
concluded that the money will not be coming very soon. It is expected to be a few years until an
increased minimum wage could be developed (Mcgeehan). This does not include all of America due to
larger cities usually having higher wages. Some states have more of a demand due to the different
living conditions and different prices of products. Smaller towns have been known to produce smaller
prices for average products due to supply and demand. This means the ratio of pay to living expenses
averages out. The outcomes aren t all bad. There are also some good

Essay on Edwin Arlington Robinsons the Mill
Lucius Beebe critically analyzes Edwin Arlington Robinson s, The Mill best. Beebe s analysis is from
an objective point of view. He points out to the reader that what seems so obvious may not be. She
notes The Mill is just a sad little tale of double suicide brought on by the encroachment of the modern
world and by personal loss. Thus meaning The Mill carries a deeper underlying theme. Lucius Beebe
expresses that a minor overflow of significant details has been exposed over Edwin Arlington
Robinson s The Mill, much of it concerned with whether the miller s wife did indeed drown herself
after the miller had hanged himself. Another, even more provocative question has never been asked:
did the Miller actually hang himself? Beebe ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thus, Lucius Beebe points out that Robinson sets up the stanza as a sort of verbal chandelier, with one
clause hanging upon the meaning and mode of that before, and with the framework of past perfect
verbs giving definition and tone to the whole. Robinson achieves much the same effect in the second
stanza, which opens with the miller s wife sick with a fear that had no form, which implies that the
fear has a continuation in the past. Beebe implies that a certain poetic inertia militates against
supposing change, and much more is needed to indicate or certify such change than exists. This
hypothesis is reinforced by the rest of the stanza, a single sentence formed by a pair of past conditional
clauses. What he had meant, as direct object, parallels What else there was, as subject, forming a nice
balance of speculation within the triple layered clause. This is continued within the second clause by
what was hanging from a beam, forming a seesaw of supposition that is given another push by the
predicate Would not have heeded, another past conditional verb.
Beebe suggests that this back and forth structure intensifies the pervasive aura of speculation that
surrounds all we know of the miller s wife so far. This ongoing verbal balancing act also underscores
the connotative probability of

President Woodrow Wilson s First Modern Ministry For...
Political philosopher John Locke observed that people will relinquish power to government with an
explicit or implicit trust that the leaders will act for the public good i.e. the good of every particular
member of that society (105). However, it is recognized that trust is not given in perpetuity and can be
removed over time, especially when the people s rights are violated (Koven 90). As distrust grows
towards government and the people speak out, government has proven it will take drastic action to
influence public opinion. For example, after he broke his promise to keep America out of war,
President Woodrow Wilson created the first modern ministry for propaganda in the West suppressed
dissent and resistance.
As the 28th President of the United States of America, Woodrow Wilson served two terms from March
1913 to March 1921. He was nominated by his party at the 1912 Democratic Convention where he
campaigned on a program called the New Freedom, which stressed individualism and states rights
(Freidel). Once elected, Wilson faced the decision of the nation s involvement in the ongoing conflict
between rival blocs of Great European Powers: the Austro Hungarian Empire and Germany on one
side and France, Russia and Great Britain on the other (Butcher).
During his first term, Wilson exclusively expressed neutrality. For instance, on October 27, 1913 in
Mobile, AL before the Southern Commercial Congress, Wilson stated, that the United States will

The Pope s Encyclical Letter
Substituting fossil fuels with renewable resources would help in preserving the environment. The
Pope goes on to explain how our current model of consumption and production has led to a decline in
the quality of human life, and water. Many people in power offer weak solutions to the problems at
hand and do not do much to remedy them. Since economic interests often supersede the interests of
the rest of the population, significant progress is not being made in many areas. The Pope talks about
how inactivity toward the issue of climate change is the result of self destructive habits that humans
have. Sometimes humans believe that ignoring a problem will make it go away, but that is not the
case. In the Encyclical letter the pope makes valid claims about how ... Show more content on

When one looks at the current state of the world, it is very clear that private interests are doing their
job very well, however the governments of the world are not doing their jobs of protecting the people.
It is important to call out those who are not doing their jobs well. Most governments have the power to
suppress economic interests that are damaging the environment, however they often fail to because
these governments are filled with dishonest and greedy politicians. When one looks deeper, one can
see that the fault of global warming does not lie with private interests, but with government, which is
failing to do its job. In the letter, the Pope mentions how everything is connected, and how ethical
deterioration is leading to environmental deterioration. One solution that the Pope could have
proposed is that people should honestly analyze the politicians that they are putting into power, and
seek to educate themselves and the rest of the public, to make informed decisions when it comes to
putting people in power. Too often people vote without enough education on the subject, and thus they
are susceptible to the influence of those who

Adjusting to Cultural Change
Adjusting to cultural change: How U.S. business men and women have to adjust to various cultural
changers to succeed in the international market.
Abstract
Culture inevitably influences the needs and desires of consumers of particular countries and socialized
groups, consequently, businesses, in order to succeed have to be aware of cultural interests and target
their products and operations to cultural demands. Succeeding necessitates knowing the factors that
crisscross with the other culture and understanding the other culture s practices in regards to these
factors. It also requires an understanding of ethical practices of the other culture as well as their
communication style amongst other factors. The business wishes to win customer trust and this too,
hinges, on cultural constructs. In short, the goal of standardization has given place to mastery of cross
cultural communication. This is the challenge for the American corporation that does business on a
global scale.

Strategies for Alleviating the Gang Crime Problem Essay
Introduction
The definition of a gang crime by the law enforcement officials takes two dimensions but they employ
one of the definitions in order to measure and tackle this problem in the society. The first definition
considers gang related all crimes committed by individuals who belong to a particular gang without
regard to the circumstances surrounding such crimes or the nature of the offense. This therefore is a
member based definition of gang crime. Another but more restrictive definition is that a gang crime is
committed if and when such occurs as part of the function of a gang or for the benefit of the gang and
therefore is strictly gang motivated. Based on the evidence that gang motivated crimes constitute more

Peer groups are unorganized and small groups of individuals who have a common background and
share the same space. Their involvement in crime is not at any significant level and therefore its
influence on the identity of the group is not important. Peer groups are the lowest level of gangs. The
intermediate level is comprised of more organized groups of young people in the streets whose motive
of participating in criminal activities is strongly attached to the identity of the group so that the groups
assign themselves names. This level therefore is made up of gangs.
Finally, there are the organized criminal groups whose motive of committing crimes is for personal
gains and this may likely be their main occupation. These organized criminal groups base their
operations in the illegal market place(le.ac.uk, n.d).Gang crime is an issue of concern which touches
many aspects of a society. Not only is it a social problem but also a political as well as an

Egyptian civilization began around 5000 BC and began to flourish in 3000 BC. Generally ancient
Egyptian history is seperated into three kingdoms the old kingdon, middle, and new kingdom. The old
kingdom (2686BC 2134BC) is the time period where most of what we think of ancient Egypt like the
pyramids (built as burial tombs for the pharoah). During that time Egyptians began to write texts,
study medicine, and find new battle tactics. The Egyptians were polytheists and had a pantheon of
gods, they believed the pharoah to be the god Horus and was thus treated as such.Egyptian society was

Analysis Of Requiem For The American Dream
The film Requiem for the American Dream is a documentary that informs its audience, the American
middle class, that the American Dream has died. The film was produced over a four year period and
was later turned into a book containing three times as much material as the film and became a New
York Times bestseller of the same name (Gold 2016). Considering the length of time this took to
create, and the topics it covers, it is relatively short at only 73 minutes. Despite the time constraint, the
film conveys its message in a way that is understandable to the audience. The principle filmmakers are
Kelly Nyks, Peter Hutchison, and Jared Scott, all of which have worked with Chomsky in past
ventures according to the website IMDb.com. The star of this documentary is Noam Chomsky, while
he is on screen he is shown seated, with a relaxed manner, offscreen he is the narrator. The video has
ten parts that describe how the American Dream has died, beginning with the concept Reducing
Democracy where Chomsky tells viewers that the founding fathers drafted the U.S. Constitution with
the intention to protect wealthy individuals against too much democracy. Next, he addresses Shaping
of Ideology this highlights a memo, sent from Lewis F. Powell Jr. in 1971 detailing the attack on the
American economic system, stressing that the young are being taken away from the ideology of the

America MUST Drill for Oil in The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR)
For a drug addict to quit a drug, the best solutions for the addict would be to slowly wean them self off
the drug periodically. America can be viewed in a parallel way on its dependency for oil. America
needs another source of oil to slowly lessen its overwhelming dependency on foreign oil and to help
the process of finding another mass energy source. The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge better known
as the ANWR is a rich treasure of oil and gas that can help lessen Americas need for foreign resources.
Drilling on the ANWR will not only help the American economy, but will also help aid America in the
future.

In Virginia alone about 28,000 jobs will be created such as engineers and oil supply developers. The
drilling will affect each state in some way weather it be transportation, stocking, manufacturing or a
vast number of jobs. What better way to help American citizens than making national jobs instead of
creating foreign jobs. Most individuals may think that drilling and transporting oil on the ANWR will
put many animals in danger, when in all reality the animals and their environment will be subjected to
little or no danger. There are many reasons for this. Firstly, a great deal of oil drilling experience has
already been learned in the Arctic area because of previous drilling done at Prudhoe Bay, which has
taught oil companies extensive safety precautions in the drilling and transporting of oil. Prudhoe Bay
which is only couple miles from the ANWR and currently Americas largest source of oil is said to
rival the amount of oil on the ANWR. Moreover, the ANWR stretches a vast 19 million acres and the
only land that is going to be affected by the drilling is a mere 1.9 million acres, called the 1002 area.
That is only 2% of the ANWR region. Of the 1.9 million acres only 2000 of those acres will actually
be utilized for drilling purposes. Conclusively, this should in no way endanger the animals in this area.

Persuasive Essay On Cardiovascular Disease
Why I Chose My Topic Men are generally at greater risk of cardiovascular disease but that does not
mean women are not affected by this deadly disease as well. This topic sparked an interest in me
because women should be aware and learn about the risk factors for developing heart disease. Many
women are not well informed or proactive in preventing or controlling cardiovascular diseases that
may arise in the future due to the choices of today. People have little to no control over some risk
factors such as family history and age that can affect women and it is crucial to have precaution before
it becomes a problem. There are numerous of ways to diminish the chances but many women do not
have access or the correct resources to learn about them. For those who already have a cardiovascular
disease, it may be hard to adjust to ways of controlling it or may not know how to properly control it
yet. Maybe the way the person is controlling it is not the best option for them and should seek for
proper guidance. The problem is really what or where can these women find the proper guidance that
they desire, or what exactly is the proper guidance for them. Prevention and control of cardiovascular
disease among women should be talked about more. It is important to have the knowledge and protect
ourselves from something that can be prevented if we follow the right steps to reduce our chances of
cardiovascular disease.

Heartbreaking Infant Morality in Ohio Essay
Infant Mortality in Ohio The Columbus Dispatch editorial Saving Our Kids gives a disturbing look at
the high infant mortality rates in Ohio, and their plan to decrease these fatalities. It is truly shocking
when beginning to take a look at these numbers. The Columbus Dispatch stated, In Ohio, in 2011,
more than one thousand children died before their first birthday . These numbers tell us that Ohio is
failing our infants when it comes to keeping them healthy. Imagining the heartbreak and devastation

These five factors alone accounted for sixty one percent of infant mortalities in Ohio from 2006 to
2010 (Ohio Department of Health). Some of these factors can be drastically reduced with increased
education among women whether they are pregnant or not. The old saying knowledge is power
becomes of upmost importance when it can save a child s life. The increase of education on smoking
cessation, prenatal care, nutrition, and infant sleeping precautions during pregnancy can help to lower
these rates. If mothers were better educated on these topics the rate of compliance would increase and
the risks that come along with them can be decreased as suggested by The Ohio Collaborative to
Prevent Infant Mortality (OCPIM). Poverty has also been shown to play a role in infant mortality.
Living in poverty has been linked to significant rises in stress levels due to lack of money, poor living
conditions, and high crime rates. Women who live in poverty stricken areas are also less likely to have
access to quality healthcare, and these everyday stresses cause an increase in stress hormones. When
these hormones are increased your blood pressure rises, and the body tends to store fat causing weight
gain both of which have harmful effects on pregnancy as indicated by the Secretary s Advisory
Committee on Infant Mortality. As poverty rates rise in the United States, solutions for how to

Biological Explanations Of Crime Analysis
Biological Explanations of Crime Strengths and weakness
Biological explanations of crime suggests that crime is due to the nature of an individual, this is highly
controversial as it suggests crime is innate and not a cause of the environment. These theories suggest
that criminals are born with criminal tendencies. This essay will discuss various biological
explanations of crime and point out some strengths and weaknesses. Cesare Lombroso, whom
established criminology as a science, founded this theory. He gathered facts in an empirical study and

people see working class people as more delinquent (Flanagan 2011). The method was also flawed in
the fact that Sheldon rated the body types himself, this would cause researcher bias as he may
consciously or unconsciously rate the bodies according to what supports his theory. This could have

The Fall Of The Republic And Fall
Main Article
When articles are written about the fall of the Republic and the fall of democracy, the blame is often
attributed to one man: Julius Caesar. However, a figure that tends to be overlooked in popular history
held the consulship over fifty years prior to the Republic s inevitable fall was named Gaius Marius.
Coming from an obscure Volscian town in the territory of Arpinum, sixty miles south east of Rome,
Plutarch wrote of Marius coming from poor origins and rising to the consulship as an archetypal rags
to riches story. This is nothing more than dramatic flair, since in reality he came from a good
municipal family who were members of the local aristocracy, with the contemporary view
characterising them as powerful nobles in their native town.
Upon being elected consul in 107 BC, Marius was presented with the chance to cement his legacy.
Accordingly, he began to reform the military. Before leaving for Africa, to finish off Jugurtha, he
changed the traditional way of recruitment. Previously, Roman citizens were recruited on the basis of
their property qualification: Scullard writes that the rule was that the army should be recruited only
from men enrolled in the five classes. Instead, Marius appealed to the proletarii, who were men that
lacked the necessary property qualification. This wasn t any great innovation, as property
qualifications had already been reduced. He simply completed the next logical step. But the results of
this reform were

Blindsight Essay
Blindsight phenomenon suggests that the brain can sense the presence of an object without actually
seeing it. Blindsight is defined as those who are cortically blind (caused most often by blood flow loss
to the occipital cortex, where we process our conscious visuals) due to lesions in their striate cortex, or
V1, having the ability to respond to visual stimuli that is not consciously seen. Patients reportedly
have blindness, but respond to visual stimuli. The studies are mainly conducted on patients who are
blind on only one side of their visual field. The articles I have had assistance in choosing are; Seeing

This method does not take into account the possibility of weak conscious knowledge, we cannot report
on that which we are unaware of. One study involving a 31 year old female patient (GR) whom, for a
few months, had experienced severe headaches. Suddenly, she was hit with a massive headache, then
blindness on the right side of her visual field, and dropped to a level 12 Glasgow Coma Score (GCS

of the scale, and the resulting points give a patient score between 3, indicating deep unconsciousness,
and either 14 (original scale) or 15, the more widely used modified or revised scale). The results of a
CT scan of her cerebral lobe indicated an anterior left occipital lobe hemorrhage, surrounding the
subarachnoid space, and expanding to the left lateral ventricle, resulting in a moderate hydrocephalus
(swelling of the head). The next day, her GCS decreased to 7, and a new CT scanning showed
increased hydrocephalus. A drain was placed in the right lateral ventricle to drain CSF. Angiography
showed an arteriovenous malformation. The malformation was treated with endovascular (of or

The Benefits Of Year-Round School
Vacations with the whole family can be a blast! But year round school can take that away. Although
year round school can help students stay focused on what they are learning in school it is destroying
the time that kids spend on sports and vacations with their family.
To begin with, kids need fresh air; they need to be outside playing with their friends they don t need to
be stuck in a classroom for six weeks. Not being able to get exercise is not a good thing for kids they
need to be outside exercising not stuck in a classroom. In Source one paragraph four it says If students
are in school year round it make it difficult from them to have a summer job and a sports team s
schedules. Kids need to be outside but thanks to year round it

The Gender Wage Gap In Film And Television
Daniel Fare
Professor Coffay
902: Gender, Sex, and Science
12 October 2017
Gender Wage Gap in Film and Television
The gender wage gap and glass escalator are worldwide problems that permeate through a multitude
of occupations, and no industry perpetuates these more blatantly than film and television. The gender
wage gap is the continual disparity between the average salary of a male worker and the average
salary of a female worker with the same or similar jobs or ranking of job. The glass escalator refers to
the idea that women and minorities progress up the hierarchical ladder in their job fields slower than
men do. In the film and television industry, the gender wage gap and glass escalator can be seen most
prominently between actors and actresses in both leading and supporting roles; however, this gap can
also be seen between male and female directors. It is also not limited to just one country or continent,
spanning across both North America and Europe. Actresses and female directors across the globe
deserve to be compensated as much as the actors and male directors they work with because it benefits
the industry financially and creatively.
Across many American industries, the gender wage gap has been proven to be a major financial issue.
There is no clear and concrete reason for its existence, but researchers have found that lowered
perceived competence and commitment to the job, lack of negotiation, and general employer sexism
all contribute to the prolongation of the

The Gospel Of Judas
The Gospel of Judas was discovered in the late 1970 s near El Minya in Egypt however the gospel was
not available to scholars until 2006 when National Geographic published a translation of the Coptic
text. The Gospel of Judas, believed to be written sometime in the second century, contains sixteen
chapters that document Jesus teaching spiritual matters and cosmology to Judas. In 2006, when the
translation was released, National Geographic came out and said that this text reveals Judas as the
perfect gnostic where his act of betrayal is righteous and allows him to surpass all other disciples. One
of the major problems with the release of this translation was that scholars, like April DeConick,
began realizing that some words and phrases ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Before Rodolphe Kasser worked on preserving the text in 2004, the Tchacos Codex, the manuscript in
which the Gospel of Judas can be found, changed hands many times. At one point the codex landed
into the hands of an antiques dealer who wanted an enormous amount of money. However, what he
came to realize was that anyone who wanted the manuscript could not afford his price. At this point,
the manuscript ended up in a safety deposit box in New York until 2000. Eventually, a Swiss
individual bought the codex and finally the manuscript was reconstructed by Kasser. In 2008,
scholarship began associating the final redactor of the gospel with Sethian Gnosticism. The Ohio
fragments were photographed and reconstructed in 2009 leading to much of the missing text being
added. By 2011, the basic established theory was that the Gospel of Judas was a second century
polemic Sethian Gnostic text that was against the apostolic and Orthodox Christianity.
The opening of the Gospel of Judas finds the disciples offering thanks over bread in which Jesus
laughs because they are offering thanks to their God. Then Jesus asks them who he truly is but none
could answer, except Judas. Judas said that he came from the realm of the immortal Barbelo but he
cannot say the name of the one who sent him. In which Jesus then tells Judas to separate from the
others and he will reveal the mysteries of the kingdom. When Judas comes to Jesus a vision in which
he saw a

St. Augustine s Confessions In The History Of Christianity
Augustine of Hippo, also know as Saint Augustine, is one of the best known theologians in the history
of Christianity. He was born in Thagaste, modern day Algeria in North Africa. From the very
beginning, he struggled with finding himself and experimented with many religions. His father was a
pagan who believed in worldly values and in worldly achievements. His mother on the other had was
a very devout Christian woman who believed that God could and would help everyone get to Heaven.
His parents, though poor, wanted the best for their son and went to all lenghts necessary to secure his
eduacation. Augustine s conversion can be seen as one of the most famous and dramatic through out
history. Throughout Confessions Saint Augustine reflects upon his spiritual journey toward adulthood
and the challenged through which he must confess his sins to find a life worth living. Augustine s
thoughts has had a philisphopical impact on the idea of doctrine for the church and in the concept of
salvation. An astounding writer and original thinker, Augustine s teachings and writings number ...

It talks about how he [Alypius] never really liked gladiator games, but one day his friends dragged
him along and made hime watch all that happened. He quickly became infattuated with the sport and it
consumed his entire life. To quote Billy Currington, God is great, the beer is good, and people are
crazy. The battle between flesh and spirit began. I had put out of my mind any thought that I could
deal with him to prevent the undoing of so good a mind through a blind and headstrond passion for
such vain pastimes ( Augustine 6.7). Augustine looked upon how his friends life was going and couldn

Voting Is a Right for Americans Essays
The United States of America, almost since its conception, demonstrated a shining example of what a
successful democracy should be. As citizens of a democratic country, we have the privilege to choose
our leaders and the opportunity to have our voices heard. Many countries around the world operate by
dictatorship or royal lineage. In these countries, citizens are not granted the freedom to elect officials.
Often times, these people face grave consequences if they speak out against their leaders resulting in
arrests or other penalties. You would assume, with this knowledge, that Americans hold the highest
voter participation. In a study from the 2012 Presidential Election by ABC, the number of American
citizens actively involved in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So, when I cast my ballot to vote, I do so in honor of those who sacrificed and worked tirelessly to
guarantee my right as an African American and as a woman. My first official voting experience took
place during the Houston Mayoral Election of 2009. Unlike other voters young and older I developed
a strong sense with whom and what I was voting for. Mayor Bill White proudly served the city of
Houston for three terms and was tough to replace. I did my research on the candidates propositions
and paid close attention to their campaign efforts. My parents are strong advocates about the
importance of voting. They always lectured my siblings and me about how citizens determined who
got into office and how they represented the community. You had a problem, voice your concerns with
your ballot, my mom would always say. My father would often exclaim, Don t gripe and not vote. No
vote...no room for complaints.
Going off to an out of state college, I did not foresee problems faced with voting. Registration
methods vary from state to state. Across the country, college students face barriers with exercising
their voting rights. In some areas, communities debate whether students can vote as state residents or
vote absentee from their hometowns. In other areas, legislators debate whether student IDs can be
used at polls. When I participated in the 2009 Houston Mayoral Election, I

  • 2. Positive And Negative Effects Of Modern Technology Modern Technology has had a great deal of influence on how we process information in the twenty first Century. Business flourishes with the use of e mails to send for conferences or important information in seconds, while the use of Skype has vastly increased how they interact in conferences from all over the world. News was once posted once a day only through the papers and television, if the information was not seen then it was not known to have happen whereas today, anytime of the day, current or former information can be accessed. Children today will be interacting with their friends in seconds and do not have to make plans ahead of time. However, people have abused how the Internet was intended to be which has led to some undeniable, severe consequences. Technology has negatively impacted how humans communicate through replacing the human connection, making peoples attention span shorter than it used to be, and providing a need for people to receive shallow and instant gratification about how people view a topic. Technological devices, experts assure us, are becoming insensitive, instant human substitutes for the conventional user. Sherry Turkle, a Doctor of Social Studies and Technology at MIT, states, We turn to machines for companionship even as we seem pained or inconvenienced to...texting offers the right amount of access, the right amount of control to distance people not too far or close (Turkle 2011). Children who are breastfed are more resistant to health issues like juvenile diabetes, multiple sclerosis, heart disease, and infections. Breast milk provides a unique source of nutrition that helps fight these issues and cannot be replaced with other food, including formula. Mothers who are breastfeeding are less likely to develop osteoporosis, lower risk of breast, uterine and ovarian cancer. Despite these benefits to both mother and child there has been much stigma on the topic of breastfeeding in public areas. Forty seven states allow mothers to breastfeed in any public or private areas that she herself is allowed to be at (Nguyen Hawkins, 2013). Historical Development of Security Forces: The historical development of security forces and policy making in crime and justice from civilization period to the establishment of contemporary nation states and governments mainly involves the evolution of law and legal structures. Some of the various codes of law and justice that have been promulgated at different periods of history include: The Code of Hammurabi: This is the earliest code of written and public laws that was developed in Babylonia approximately 2,000 years before Christ. While this ancient legal code was promulgated by Emperor Hammurabi, it was popularly accepted as a law of divine origin that helped reinforce its legitimacy. Since it dealt with various aspects, the Code of Hammurabi established the idea of restorative and retributive justice (Shahidullah, 2008, p. 3). Draco s Law: This code of law was originally written by an Athenian legislator as a strict legal code for Greece around 621 B.C. Draco s law stated that it was the state s responsibility to punish offenders instead of private citizens as many people were sentenced to death for crimes. Law of the Twelve Tables: The introduction of the Twelve Tables around 450 B.C. was the most significant ancient legal code of the Roman Law. The development of this law involved 10 Roman men who had total control in writing laws to govern Roman citizens (Limbaugh, 2010). In Arthur Miller s The Crucible; the character of John Proctor is an honorable man despite having committed wrongful acts. He was able to redeem himself through acts that is considered courageous, such as when he refuses to contribute to the lie of witchcraft in Salem, when he fights for the people who were convicted of witchcraft and when he regrets being a dishonest man. This is primarily due to the fact that the creationists most visible in the public eye during the creation evolution debate were most likely to hold young earth creationist views. Additionally, the terms recent earth or recent creation have been used to refer to this same position. These terms clearly define their position as one in which the creation of the world occurred somewhat recently, that is, the world is young. The next point Nelson and Reynolds make is one of disagreement between young earth and progressive creationists. Concerning the impact of the curse in Genesis 3, young earth creationists typically view this point to be the entrance of all death and suffering to the world. Progressive creationists, however, consider there to be a long period of time between the creation of the world and the introduction of sin into the world. Because of this length of time, progressive creationists consider animal death and suffering to have occurred long before the first humans sinned. The question of animal death and suffering prior to the fall of mankind is one that will be discussed in further detail when looking at the old earth positions According to Nelson and Reynolds, the strongest point of contention between young earth and progressive creationists is that of the flood. Finally, Company Size, Industry, Company Ownership, Organizational Design (Czinkota et al., 2010), and Firm Age are introduced in the model to control for factors beyond relationships that could influence the dependent variable of performance resilience. Data Analysis The research method relies upon the general methodological framework used by Gittell et al. (2006) in the study of the airlines industry resilience to the terrorist attacks of 9/11. This exploratory archival data analysis employs quantitative statistical techniques from the terrorism and international business literature stream. Initially, correlation analysis between the operationalized independent variables, moderating variables, control variables and the dependent variable will be conducted, using Pearson Correlation Coefficients as a measure, to identify and evaluate non causal associations and strengths of relationships between variables. In addition, scatterplots would be created of the variables to determine whether linear relationships exist. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) would be used as the general structure for statistical testing of the conceptual model, shown in Figure 4, using the F test. Moreover, the F test would be an initial overall inference test of the operationalized conceptual model. Furthermore, collinearity diagnostics tests for multi collinearity on the independent and moderating variables will be performed using Variance Inflation Factors as a gauge to assess any overlap or ... How is this like the black Atlantic and how is it different?). Students should use the Colin Palmer piece to answer this question. In its most recognizable form, the African diaspora refers to the many cultures and societies abroad that exist throughout the world as the result of the historic movement, mostly forced, of native Africans to other parts of the globe. Most specifically, the African diaspora is the blanket term used to represent a confluence of events that led to the forced displacement of millions of innocent people. In many respects, diasporas are not actual but imaginary and symbolic communities and political constructs; it is we who often call them into being. (Palmer) It is essential to note that the term African Diaspora does not describe any single event, group of people or set of customs. It represents a current state of being for many citizens of the world and provides context for understanding the social structures and intercultural relationships of the world we live in today. Collin Palmer provides great insight into the context of diaspora. He writes that there have been several movements, massive migrations of people, throughout history. There is no single diasporic movement or monolithic diasporic community to be studied, but rather a confluence of people, events and ideologies that span thousands of years, across every continent. Each period of movement, each diasporic stream, happened for different reasons. Palmer s approach to the African Diaspora begins with a look nearly 100,000 years into the past. A Man And His Methods A Man and His Methods In the short film Method Actor by Justin Stokes, a seasoned actor is discussing his career in what appears to be an interview; the discussion goes along and we discover that he prefers the process of method acting, a technique in which you become the character which you re playing. A technique Lee Strasberg referred to as what all actors have always done whenever they acted well. Yet, as the actor clearly showcases, this method can push some minds over the brink. The old man has played many roles ... the clown, the hero, the lover, the philosopher,... (Stokes.) He hesitates on his latest role, which was the murderer, which raises the question, how could he tap into that role? How can one remain rational after adopting such a drastic, hazardous mindset? Just as these questions arise into the minds of the viewer, the camera loses focus behind a barred window and the scene concludes. The film is riddled with pieces of evidence to help the viewer better understand exactly how he did it. The cinematography in this scene gives us the first of the insight into the old man s mind. The movie begins with the actor looking out of a window with a pile of photos under his feet. He seems to be completely oblivious of the camera. He then walks his way to an old mirror and stares at himself, then his monologue begins. (Stokes) This will gain more relevance as the scene goes on. • 12. The Battle Of The Crusades In The Song Of Roland In the epic poem, The Song of Roland the tale depicts the Battle at Rencevaux in which the protagonist is betrayed and serves as a martyr to justify the Crusades. The Crusades were a medieval military expedition by the Roman Catholics to purge the Muslims from the Holy Land. With this definition of the Crusades, one can conclude that the Song of Roland should not be considered apart of the Crusades as the poem s context is historically inaccurate, written long after the events, and lacks a credible source. Instead, this depiction should just be considered as a folk tale that was used to drive the crusaders to keep fighting. The story of heroism in this poem was no doubt a motivational tool that inspired soldiers to persevere and uproot the Muslims from the Holy Land. The Song of Roland dates back to early 12th century, in the midst of the Crusades. The original battle was called the Battle of Roncevaux Pass which took place in 778 AD, long before the epic poem dates back to. For one to even consider this poem as the first battle of the Crusades the poem would have be written relatively soon after the battle. Some scholars speculate that the poem was written around the time that the battle took place but there is no evidence to support their theory as the only written copies date back between 1129 and 1165 AD. These dates place the written poem in the middle of the Crusades. Furthermore, this strengthens the idea that the poem is not a accurate description of what actually happened on that day. Instead, this epic poem was written for another purpose, the purpose of inspiring the current knights of the glory and honor that can be gained from this Holy War. With the date of the Song of Roland being nearly four hundred years after the actual battle one could see the potential problems with the details of the story. Having no previous records, experts aren t sure whether the epic poem was changed on purpose, or if parts of it were forgotten. Although the tale conveys a sense of heroism and pride, it there are many details that are historically inaccurate. Comparison Between Ghost World By Terry Zwigoff Essay Feminist Relationship Issues of Enide, Rebecca, Maggie and Hopey The comparison and contrast between Ghost World, the movie, directed by Terry Zwigoff and written by Daniel Clowes brings graphic novel characters to life. Both stories give the readers realistic and very interesting examination of two relationships between a variety of teenage girls. In Ghost World, Enid and Rebecca, we catch a glimpse into their view of the world, not entirely invalid, and sometimes certainly childish and superficial. Their activities gave them pleasure, but are not as much fun as they used to be. The world of Enid and Rebecca ultimately changes, despite their personal desires. In contrast to Maggie and Hopey in Maggie the Mechanic, most of their stories focus on their antics. This series focuses more on the sexual tension between Hopey and Maggie. Hopey, who is a lesbian, is desperately in love with the primarily heterosexual Maggie, and she makes it clear to Maggie that she s always there for her. This essay will focus on certain aspects of feminist relationships, such as bonding, communication issues, differences and similarities. In Ghost World, The female characters, Enid and Rebecca, are bonded together by their hatred of the world around them; they are ghosts, who live in the shadow between a young adult and mature adult. It is not just about more money in a person s pocket; it can affect the economy in multiple ways. Many people think it would be a good idea to raise the average minimum wage, but they do not understand or take the time to think of the disadvantages. The minimum wage is the least amount a worker can be paid at a job, by federal law. The present minimum wage is set at seven dollars and 25 cents. The wage can be determined by votes of the public or the average living cost. Before the Fair Labor Standards Act, corporations were free to choose any pay rate of their choice. This ... Another disadvantage to a rise in pay includes the possibility that some people may lose their government benefits due to their new annual income, such as food stamps or health insurance. The loss of federal and state aids could produce a greater hardship on people and their families than the preexisting minimum wage. For those who have already earned a higher pay due to noticeably hard work or time spent working for a company, the raise of minimum wage would cause the experienced workers to demand more. If the company is already struggling to pay the difference of the raised minimum wage, there will be no option but to either refuse the request of an experienced worker or fire employees. Even though workers have dreamed of a pay raise for years, it has been concluded that the money will not be coming very soon. It is expected to be a few years until an increased minimum wage could be developed (Mcgeehan). This does not include all of America due to larger cities usually having higher wages. Some states have more of a demand due to the different living conditions and different prices of products. He points out to the reader that what seems so obvious may not be. She notes The Mill is just a sad little tale of double suicide brought on by the encroachment of the modern world and by personal loss. Thus meaning The Mill carries a deeper underlying theme. Lucius Beebe expresses that a minor overflow of significant details has been exposed over Edwin Arlington Robinson s The Mill, much of it concerned with whether the miller s wife did indeed drown herself after the miller had hanged himself. Another, even more provocative question has never been asked: did the Miller actually hang himself? Beebe ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thus, Lucius Beebe points out that Robinson sets up the stanza as a sort of verbal chandelier, with one clause hanging upon the meaning and mode of that before, and with the framework of past perfect verbs giving definition and tone to the whole. Robinson achieves much the same effect in the second stanza, which opens with the miller s wife sick with a fear that had no form, which implies that the fear has a continuation in the past. Beebe implies that a certain poetic inertia militates against supposing change, and much more is needed to indicate or certify such change than exists. This hypothesis is reinforced by the rest of the stanza, a single sentence formed by a pair of past conditional clauses. What he had meant, as direct object, parallels What else there was, as subject, forming a nice balance of speculation within the triple layered clause. This is continued within the second clause by what was hanging from a beam, forming a seesaw of supposition that is given another push by the predicate Would not have heeded, another past conditional verb. Beebe suggests that this back and forth structure intensifies the pervasive aura of speculation that surrounds all we know of the miller s wife so far. The Pope goes on to explain how our current model of consumption and production has led to a decline in the quality of human life, and water. Many people in power offer weak solutions to the problems at hand and do not do much to remedy them. Since economic interests often supersede the interests of the rest of the population, significant progress is not being made in many areas. One solution that the Pope could have proposed is that people should honestly analyze the politicians that they are putting into power, and seek to educate themselves and the rest of the public, to make informed decisions when it comes to putting people in power. The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge better known as the ANWR is a rich treasure of oil and gas that can help lessen Americas need for foreign resources. The drilling will affect each state in some way weather it be transportation, stocking, manufacturing or a vast number of jobs. What better way to help American citizens than making national jobs instead of creating foreign jobs. Most individuals may think that drilling and transporting oil on the ANWR will put many animals in danger, when in all reality the animals and their environment will be subjected to little or no danger. There are many reasons for this. Firstly, a great deal of oil drilling experience has already been learned in the Arctic area because of previous drilling done at Prudhoe Bay, which has taught oil companies extensive safety precautions in the drilling and transporting of oil. Prudhoe Bay which is only couple miles from the ANWR and currently Americas largest source of oil is said to rival the amount of oil on the ANWR. Moreover, the ANWR stretches a vast 19 million acres and the only land that is going to be affected by the drilling is a mere 1.9 million acres, called the 1002 area. That is only 2% of the ANWR region. Of the 1.9 million acres only 2000 of those acres will actually be utilized for drilling purposes. This topic sparked an interest in me because women should be aware and learn about the risk factors for developing heart disease. Many women are not well informed or proactive in preventing or controlling cardiovascular diseases that may arise in the future due to the choices of today. People have little to no control over some risk factors such as family history and age that can affect women and it is crucial to have precaution before it becomes a problem. There are numerous of ways to diminish the chances but many women do not have access or the correct resources to learn about them. For those who already have a cardiovascular disease, it may be hard to adjust to ways of controlling it or may not know how to properly control it yet. Maybe the way the person is controlling it is not the best option for them and should seek for proper guidance. The problem is really what or where can these women find the proper guidance that they desire, or what exactly is the proper guidance for them. These five factors alone accounted for sixty one percent of infant mortalities in Ohio from 2006 to 2010 (Ohio Department of Health). Some of these factors can be drastically reduced with increased education among women whether they are pregnant or not. The old saying knowledge is power becomes of upmost importance when it can save a child s life. The increase of education on smoking cessation, prenatal care, nutrition, and infant sleeping precautions during pregnancy can help to lower these rates. If mothers were better educated on these topics the rate of compliance would increase and the risks that come along with them can be decreased as suggested by The Ohio Collaborative to Prevent Infant Mortality (OCPIM). Poverty has also been shown to play a role in infant mortality. Living in poverty has been linked to significant rises in stress levels due to lack of money, poor living conditions, and high crime rates. Women who live in poverty stricken areas are also less likely to have access to quality healthcare, and these everyday stresses cause an increase in stress hormones. However, a figure that tends to be overlooked in popular history held the consulship over fifty years prior to the Republic s inevitable fall was named Gaius Marius. Coming from an obscure Volscian town in the territory of Arpinum, sixty miles south east of Rome, Plutarch wrote of Marius coming from poor origins and rising to the consulship as an archetypal rags to riches story. This is nothing more than dramatic flair, since in reality he came from a good municipal family who were members of the local aristocracy, with the contemporary view characterising them as powerful nobles in their native town. Upon being elected consul in 107 BC, Marius was presented with the chance to cement his legacy. Accordingly, he began to reform the military. Before leaving for Africa, to finish off Jugurtha, he changed the traditional way of recruitment. Previously, Roman citizens were recruited on the basis of their property qualification: Scullard writes that the rule was that the army should be recruited only from men enrolled in the five classes. Instead, Marius appealed to the proletarii, who were men that lacked the necessary property qualification. This wasn t any great innovation, as property qualifications had already been reduced. He simply completed the next logical step. But the results of this reform were ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. Blindsight Essay Blindsight phenomenon suggests that the brain can sense the presence of an object without actually seeing it. Blindsight is defined as those who are cortically blind (caused most often by blood flow loss to the occipital cortex, where we process our conscious visuals) due to lesions in their striate cortex, or V1, having the ability to respond to visual stimuli that is not consciously seen. Patients reportedly have blindness, but respond to visual stimuli. The studies are mainly conducted on patients who are blind on only one side of their visual field. Suddenly, she was hit with a massive headache, then blindness on the right side of her visual field, and dropped to a level 12 Glasgow Coma Score (GCS an objective way of recording the conscious state of a person. A patient is assessed against the criteria of the scale, and the resulting points give a patient score between 3, indicating deep unconsciousness, and either 14 (original scale) or 15, the more widely used modified or revised scale). The results of a CT scan of her cerebral lobe indicated an anterior left occipital lobe hemorrhage, surrounding the subarachnoid space, and expanding to the left lateral ventricle, resulting in a moderate hydrocephalus (swelling of the head). The next day, her GCS decreased to 7, and a new CT scanning showed increased hydrocephalus. A drain was placed in the right lateral ventricle to drain CSF. Angiography showed an arteriovenous malformation. The malformation was treated with endovascular (of or relating to a surgical procedure in which a catheter containing medications or miniature instruments is inserted through the skin into a blood ... • 43. The Gender Wage Gap In Film And Television Daniel Fare Professor Coffay 902: Gender, Sex, and Science 12 October 2017 Gender Wage Gap in Film and Television The gender wage gap and glass escalator are worldwide problems that permeate through a multitude of occupations, and no industry perpetuates these more blatantly than film and television. The gender wage gap is the continual disparity between the average salary of a male worker and the average salary of a female worker with the same or similar jobs or ranking of job. The glass escalator refers to the idea that women and minorities progress up the hierarchical ladder in their job fields slower than men do. In the film and television industry, the gender wage gap and glass escalator can be seen most prominently between actors and actresses in both leading and supporting roles; however, this gap can also be seen between male and female directors. It is also not limited to just one country or continent, spanning across both North America and Europe. Actresses and female directors across the globe deserve to be compensated as much as the actors and male directors they work with because it benefits the industry financially and creatively. Across many American industries, the gender wage gap has been proven to be a major financial issue. There is no clear and concrete reason for its existence, but researchers have found that lowered perceived competence and commitment to the job, lack of negotiation, and general employer sexism all contribute to the prolongation of the ... • 44. The Gospel Of Judas The Gospel of Judas was discovered in the late 1970 s near El Minya in Egypt however the gospel was not available to scholars until 2006 when National Geographic published a translation of the Coptic text. The Gospel of Judas, believed to be written sometime in the second century, contains sixteen chapters that document Jesus teaching spiritual matters and cosmology to Judas. In 2006, when the translation was released, National Geographic came out and said that this text reveals Judas as the perfect gnostic where his act of betrayal is righteous and allows him to surpass all other disciples. One of the major problems with the release of this translation was that scholars, like April DeConick, began realizing that some words and phrases ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Before Rodolphe Kasser worked on preserving the text in 2004, the Tchacos Codex, the manuscript in which the Gospel of Judas can be found, changed hands many times. At one point the codex landed into the hands of an antiques dealer who wanted an enormous amount of money. However, what he came to realize was that anyone who wanted the manuscript could not afford his price. At this point, the manuscript ended up in a safety deposit box in New York until 2000. Eventually, a Swiss individual bought the codex and finally the manuscript was reconstructed by Kasser. In 2008, scholarship began associating the final redactor of the gospel with Sethian Gnosticism. The Ohio fragments were photographed and reconstructed in 2009 leading to much of the missing text being added. By 2011, the basic established theory was that the Gospel of Judas was a second century polemic Sethian Gnostic text that was against the apostolic and Orthodox Christianity. The opening of the Gospel of Judas finds the disciples offering thanks over bread in which Jesus laughs because they are offering thanks to their God. Then Jesus asks them who he truly is but none could answer, except Judas. Judas said that he came from the realm of the immortal Barbelo but he cannot say the name of the one who sent him. In which Jesus then tells Judas to separate from the others and he will reveal the mysteries of the kingdom. When Judas comes to Jesus a vision in which he saw a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 46. Voting Is a Right for Americans Essays The United States of America, almost since its conception, demonstrated a shining example of what a successful democracy should be. As citizens of a democratic country, we have the privilege to choose our leaders and the opportunity to have our voices heard. Many countries around the world operate by dictatorship or royal lineage. In these countries, citizens are not granted the freedom to elect officials. Often times, these people face grave consequences if they speak out against their leaders resulting in arrests or other penalties. You would assume, with this knowledge, that Americans hold the highest voter participation. In a study from the 2012 Presidential Election by ABC, the number of American citizens actively involved in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... So, when I cast my ballot to vote, I do so in honor of those who sacrificed and worked tirelessly to guarantee my right as an African American and as a woman. My first official voting experience took place during the Houston Mayoral Election of 2009. Unlike other voters young and older I developed a strong sense with whom and what I was voting for. Mayor Bill White proudly served the city of Houston for three terms and was tough to replace. I did my research on the candidates propositions and paid close attention to their campaign efforts. My parents are strong advocates about the importance of voting. They always lectured my siblings and me about how citizens determined who got into office and how they represented the community. You had a problem, voice your concerns with your ballot, my mom would always say. My father would often exclaim, Don t gripe and not vote. No vote...no room for complaints. Going off to an out of state college, I did not foresee problems faced with voting. Registration methods vary from state to state. Across the country, college students face barriers with exercising their voting rights. In some areas, communities debate whether students can vote as state residents or vote absentee from their hometowns. In other areas, legislators debate whether student IDs can be used at polls.
