Testing is Overrated Essay
Students dread the time of the year when they stop with their course material and begin to prepare for
test. Everyone is in agreement that some type of revolution is needed when it comes to education;
eliminating standardized test will aid the reform. The need for standardized testing has proven to be
ineffective and outdated; some leading educationalist also believe this because the tests do not
measure a student s true potential. This will save money, stop labeling, and alleviate stress in students
and teachers.
Now more than ever, money is scarce and one way to increase this money supply is by the elimination
of standardized testing. The cost for standardized testing in 2nd graders is roughly estimated to be
between $2 $4 million, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These tests tend to cause the student s too much stress and puts pressure on them to obtain a certain
score on these test that are required on a yearly basis. Teachers also set aside too much time to teach
strategies for taking the test and lecturing on how to eliminate some choices. According to Kathy
Frandle this is A huge waste of instruction time (Fridy). Furthermore, the unneeded stress generally
leads to a state of anxiety and it is setting too many of them up for devastating failure and,
consequently, lowered self esteem (Perrone).
Each state teaches their students different material at different rates and this is why some states place
pressure of testing companies to dumb down the test (Margie). Each state s tests are created by the
state; therefore, they can make the test as easy as possible to make everyone succeed on it. Some
states have districts in poverty and cannot afford the best textbooks or technologies; therefore, their
students do not reach their potential. When these districts have scores that are too low they do not
receive federal grants; therefore, this puts them into a further bind.
Standardized testing does not occur at the college level where someone might assume that it would be
mandated. When someone is taking a test to enter a college, wouldn t it be logical for a

Aristotle Happiness In Greek Essay
Aristotle came to the conclusion that not only is the life of contemplation the highest life but it is also
self sufficient and believed that to be happy one also must be self sufficient. In Book one Aristotle
states But we must think about this later. For now, we take what is self sufficient to be that which on
its own makes life worthy of choice and lacking in nothing (Aristotle, Nicomachean Ethics, 39).
Aristotle believed that it is easy enough to see that we have a inclination for money, pleasure and
honour because we think that these things will make us happy. The translation of happiness in greek is
eudaimonia, the different with the happiness and we all know and the greek translation of happiness is

System of Particles and Rotational Motion Centre of Mass...
SYSTEM OF PARTICLES AND ROTATIONAL MOTION
CENTRE OF MASS AND ROTATIONAL MOTION
INTRODUCTION
For describing the motion of rigid bodies, we shall introduce the key concept of centre of mass . This
concept enables us to understand how we can apply justifiably the Newton s laws of motion, in
essentially the same form to objects of large size including even the astronomical objects like the
planets and the stars.
KINDS OF MOTION OF A RIGID BODY
A rigid body may have three kinds of motion
(1) Pure Translation Motion in such a motion, every particle of the body has the same velocity at a
particular instant of time. For e.g. when a rectangular block slides down an inclined plane, any point
like P1,P2 of the block, at any instant of time ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hence the centre of mass is closer to the massive particle. NOTE 1. The centre of mass may lie
outside the object. For e.g. the centre of mass of ring lies outside it. 2. Centre of mass depends on the
distribution of mass within the body and is closer to heavy part but for identical particles C.M. lies at
the midpoint of the line joining the point masses. 3. If an object is symmetrical and have uniform
distribution of mass then its C.M. coincides with geometrical centre. 4. The position of C.M. is
independent from the coordinate system. E.g. the centre of mass of a ring of uniform thickness is at its
centre whatever be the coordinate system. CENTRE OF MASS OF LAMINAR OBJECTS
A laminar object means a two dimensional distribution of mass of negligible thickness e.g. paper of
your copy. If a large number of laminar type objects are placed in a plane then

Advantages Of Depreciation
Depreciation in accounting concept is the gradual conversion of the cost of a tangible capital asset or
fixed asset into an operational expense (called as depreciation expenses) over the asset s estimated
useful life. There have 3 objectives of the depreciation: 1) Spread a large expenditure (purchase price
of the asset) proportionately over a fixed period to match the revenue received from it. 2) Reduce the
taxable income by charging the amount of depreciation against the company s total income. In effect,
charging of depreciation means recovery of invested capital, by gradual sale of the asset over the years
during which output or service are received from it. 3) Reflect the reduction in the book value of asset
due to obsolescence or wear and tear. Depreciation normally ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Summary Of Sir Gawain And The Green Knight
Many games are involved in the plot of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. The Green Knight, plays a
Christmas game with the knights of the round table. Gawain s host s wife plays games with Gawain
throughout the the third fitt; all while Gawain sees his agreement of mutual trade with his host as a
game as well. In the end all of the events of the story are revealed as a game created by Arthur s sister
Morgan Le Fay, for the sole purpose of testing the honor King Arthur s knights possessed. The
Christmas game that the Green Knight comes to play with Arthur s royal court at the request of
Morgan Le Fay provides the structure for which the plot of the entire story is based upon. At first, it
seems to Arthur s court as if the knight has come to present a contest to the court; he reveals that he
intends for one person from Arthur s court to accept hit challenge and exchange one blow for another.
It seems to the people as if it would be an easy contest for the opponent of the Green Knight to win,
because no one expects him to survive a fatal blow to the head with an axe. However, the knight
shocks everyone when he picks up his severed head and rides away his green horse. After the Green
Knight rides away, it reveals to Gawain the importance of the promise made with the Green Knight.
Gawain s cousin Arthur tries to downplay the importance of this deal several times throughout the
novel, when he says Now, sir, hang up your axe and return to the feast (line 447). Authors

The Classical Cultures Of China Vs. China
India vs China The classical civilizations of China and India were two of the most important and
extant civilizations with major political development. The advanced technology like the ox drawn
plows, paper, silk roads, etc shaped China s development. India was manifested by artistry, trade, and
exceptional advances in mathematics. There were three main dynasties in classical China known as
the Zhou, Qin, and Han Dynasty while India was founded by three empires: the Mauryan, Kushan,
and Gupta empires. Even though these civilizations evolved around the same time, there are crucial
differences and similarities. Religion, beliefs, hierarchical and patriarchal systems, and government
reveal the distinction between the two civilizations. Confucianism and Daoism were the major belief
systems in classical China that shaped their society. These belief systems were not exactly
religions;they were created to teach individuals how to live life. Confucianism was introduced by
Confucius, also known as Kung Fuzi, around 570 BCE. It focused on reverence for elders, self
humility, and respect for rulers and the people being ruled. During the reign of Wu Ti, he emphasized
values of Confucian philosophy and recorded the Confucian doctrine in a book called The Analects.
The problems Confucius set out to rectify, notably political disorder, were approached through an
emphasis on individual virtuous behavior (World Civilizations The Global Experience). When the Han
Dynasty was first founded, it was heavily influenced by Shi Huangdi, a brutal and strict leader of the
Qin Dynasty who ruled people under many rules and regulations. Confucius wanted to terminate that
method of ruling and knock some sense into people on how to live life without brutality. Instead of
living under hundreds of regulations/laws, Confucius developed a sense of shame that changed the
society as a whole. People began to understand morals and values which formulated peace and
prosperity. As a result, the Mandate of Heaven was passed which stated that the ruler is blessed by
Gods and once the ruler becomes too corrupt, the dynasty would collapse. Contrary to Confucianism,
legalism indicated that only rules and regulations would create order in a

Amphitryon Dramatic Structure
To understand Dramatic Structure. The scaffolding on which playwright plots a tale to frame or shape
the action Mira Fellner, THINK theatre (Boston: Pearson, 2013), 51. While reading a play, knowledge
is applied in a critical perspective. Our mind tries to classify it in a coherent form into one of the types
of dramatic structures that have been studied by us. It should be possible now to differentiate a
climactic structure from a serial, episodic or circular one. Our goal is to clarify the ideas presented in a
play. For this, it is imperative to acknowledge that each play has its own structure. Using the tools
presented to us on Think theater we move on now from the theory to the practice. We will be
thoroughly working on the structural analysis of Amphitryon . A three act play, by Moliere. On the
very start we meet the main characters, first is Amphitryon as the general of the Thebans. Next, we
have Sosia , Amphitryon s manservant. We also meet Jupiter also known as Jove , under the guise of
Amphitryon . Finally, there is Mercury , who is Jupiter s accomplice in seducing ALCMENA ,
Amphitryon s wife. The story begins after Amphitryon has made his way to the war, a fact on which
Jove will take advantage. Then, Mercury proceeds to talk to the goddess Night . Mercury says to

Bathroom Analysis
The lights in the bathroom reflect off of every crevice, even the clear glass shower hidden in the far
corner. The tiles of the shower reveal no dirt and the glass of the shower shows no streaks. Along the
wall lies a bathtub that is eight feet in length and five feet in width. The walls of the bathtub are
littered with jets, soothing muscles after a long work day. Across from the bathtub stands a dark gray
granite counter held by light tan wooden cabinets. In the cabinets lay freshly replaced towels, toilet
paper, and supplies the occupant brought from his suitcase. In the center of the granite is a sink,
mimicking the shape of an oval. Above the sink, hangs an oval mirror with a gold embroidered border.
The border reveals an Aztec Design and is crafted with great patience. Every stroke the artist made is
evident in his masterpiece. Sandwiching the mirror are two plants. The plants have long light green
stems and their leaves are light and bouncing with energy. In front of the vanity sits a man on the

Logical Fallacies
The otherwise valid message of A Message to My Freshmen Students is rendered ineffective by the
logical fallacies and the heavy handedness of Mr. Parsons s choice in wording. You have to look past
these errors to fully discern the moral of his article; the high school learning experience is different

Mr. Parson uses two main logical fallacies, the red herring and the hasty generalization, throughout his
article. Mr. Parson uses the first fallacy by switching subjects in the sixth paragraph, writing Lecture,

Std Sexually Transmitted Diseases
Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)
The Basics
Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), also called sexually transmitted infections (STIs), are diseases
and infections that are passed from person to person through sexual contact. HIV is an STD. There are
more than 25 other STDs that are mainly spread by sexual contact such as vaginal, anal, and oral sex.
The US has the highest rate of STDs in the developed world. In the US, about 19 million new
infections occur each year. Teenage girls and young women need to be particularly aware of STDs. A
recent study estimates that 1 in 4 teenage girls (aged 14 19) have an STD. African Americans girls and
young women have some of the highest rates of STDs, especially for chlamydia and gonorrhea. In ...

Other types cause infections in the genital area that can lead to genital warts, cervical cancer, or cancer
of the vulva, vagina, anus, and penis. Genital HPV is spread easily through skin to skin contact during
vaginal or anal sex. Condoms do not totally prevent transmission. HIV+ people are more likely to be
infected with HPV than HIV negative people. HIV+ people with HPV are also more likely to develop
genital warts, as well as cervical or anal cancer. It is important to detect HPV early and get treatment
to prevent health problems. Regular Pap tests are a good way to detect HPV. There are also two HPV
vaccines. Young people should get vaccinated before their first sexual contact (before they have been
exposed to HPV). People who are already infected with HPV are not protected by the vaccines. For
more information, see TWP info sheet on HPV.
Gonorrhea
This bacterial STD can be spread through vaginal, anal, or oral sex. Symptoms may include a
yellowish or greenish vaginal discharge and a burning feeling when urinating. Gonorrhea can also
affect the anus and the throat. Many women have no symptoms. Gonorrhea can be treated with
antibiotics. If left untreated, it can cause PID and infertility. All sexually active women should be
screened for gonorrhea.
Hepatitis

To Kill A Mockingbird And Persepolis Comparison Essay
Compare how the composers of To Kill a Mockingbird and Persepolis use characterisation to explore
the conflict between personal and public worlds.
Everyone is different, has their own personality and views but it is not an uncommon occurrence when
their way of thinking clashes or is challenged with others. Harper Lee s novel To Kill a Mockingbird
(T.K.A.M) and Marjane Satrapi s graphic novel Persepolis, while set in different time periods, explore
similar issues of discrimination which are shown through techniques used by the authors.
In both books, Harper Lee and Marjane Satrapi have built their stories around young female
protagonists, Scout a hard headed and impressionable tomboy from T.K.A.M and Marjane from
Persepolis. By having the stories be narrated from a child s perspective, it allows readers to understand
the characters unsophisticated and open minds. While living in different settings and having separate
values, both Scout and Marjane come across aspects of sexism and misogyny. From a young age,
Scout had learnt from her older brother, Jem, that things associating with girls are bad and things
associating with boys are good, Jem told me I was being a girl, that girls always imagined things, that
s why other people hated them so, and if I started behaving like one I could just go off and find some
to play with. (Ch.4, Pg.45) When Scout was two, her mother died of a sudden heart attack so she
never had any major female influences or role models growing up.

in the future relations between the two institutes and a speedy response would strengthen the
relationship in the future. Professor McGill should be first apologetic to Dr. Jiminez on behalf of
Sarah and PLU since the problem faced by Sarah was with the host family and not with INI or the

cultural adjustments was overlooked by both the schools when they embarked on these programmes.
To streamline the process and avoid such embarrassing situations in future, Prof. McGill should
suggest the following to Dr.Jiminez:
a. The host family and INI should have written agreement of dos and donts.
b. Both the schools should exchange the profiles of the students and host families based on which the
students and host families could have an opportunity to select their choice.
c. There should be a proper preparatory sessions on cross cultural behavior for the students who are
opting for study abroad opportunities.
d. There should be a systematic approach for selecting the host families and also the stipend level for
the host family should be revised.

that are rude and make up rumors about celebrities because the person might not like this actor or

Actor, actresses, music artist can be seen as being rich, rude, and wanting fame because of the money
being paid. Celebrities can dress with designer clothes that is really expensive, but does not mean that

On the internet there are videos of celebrities greeting fans and are actually nice and outgoing when
meeting the fans. Although, not all celebrities are nice, do not like meeting fans, or looks like they do
not care about the fans, can sometimes not be intentional, but it is still rude when celebrities ignore a
fan that wants to take a picture or sign something. Some famous persons act this way because of bad
timing or might not want to give all the attention to one person and make the other fans feel left out or
can be because sometimes the celebrity is in a hurry or being protected by the security guards.
Celebrities can be as nice as a kitten, be respectful to all the fans, and give at least a little attention by
greeting or giving a smile to the fans. The characteristics given to celebrities by persons that have
never met these people are different when actually personally meeting the famous person that has
inspired and is loved by many people around the world. Fans most of the time do not just like the
actor, actress, or artist because they are really big in the fame industry but because these celebrities
give persons reasons to love them. Celebrities surprise fans because these stars like seeing the fans
happy and see the excitement they have when meeting them. Fans like celebrities because at times

Description Of A Homeless Man
In the outskirts of New York, dirt filled slush clings to the white cement on a December evening. Tiny
droplets of frozen water blob on the ground and melt, getting crushed by afternoon stragglers.
Buildings cluster together for warmth in the biting winter chill. The structures, many tall and slim
while some are squat and obtuse, line the streets of blazing horns and shouting pedestrians. The
sounds of people stomping their feet before they enter busses, offices, and cars echo off each
skyscraper and continue to bounce until it is too faint to be perceived. As rush hour begins to stall, two
men dart into the densely populated street not caring to stop for oncoming traffic. One man is tall and

possessive, and intelligent. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

every step. In his right, calloused hand he carries a small briefcase with a lock on the handle. The
second man follows close behind, red faced and angry. He is smaller than the other man, and walks
carelessly, throwing melted snow and slapping the pavement with his worn, crumbling sneakers.
Dressed casually, he wears a bright, blinding, green sweatshirt and jeans, nothing to shield him from
the icy conditions. His forehead, scrunched in concentration, has a small wrinkle between his

Analysis Of The November Cotton Flower By Jean Toomer
New beginnings are often disguised as painful endings... Lao Tzu
Whenever a scene of a movie approaches where a debacle unravels or innocent lives are jeopardized,
audiences grip their chairs in anticipation for help to come or for a hero to spring into action and save
lives. Similarly, in many circumstances, no matter how dire an event might seem, there is always a
beacon of hope amongst doleful situations. From every ending comes a new beginning. The poem,
November Cotton Flower , written by Jean Toomer, describes (the conditions when slaves were under
the Harlem Renaissance) the conditions in which slaves were under during the Harlem Renaissance
where there seems to be no prospect for a brighter future for the slaves in the society. Throughout the
poem, Toomer develops his theme of hope and desire for a brighter future by exhausting literary
devices such as metaphors, structure, and imagery.
The November Cotton Flower is a poem that not only depicts a late autumn setting where the cotton
season comes to an end, but also captures the agony and essence of slavery with the usage of
metaphors and similes. In the poem, a product of Harlem renaissance, Jean Toomer illustrates the
everyday life struggles of the African Americans by conveying his point of view through depleting
metaphors of the growing season. Taking place in a dismal landscape, the sonnet portrays the cotton of
being wilted due to horrible weather conditions. The cotton, the town s main cash crop, is as

Modern Chicano Theater, By Luis Valdez Is Best Known As...
Ibrahim Aldosaimani Luis Valdez 1940 Considered the originator of modern Chicano theater, Valdez
is best known as the founding director of El Teatro Campesino, a seminal grassroots theater group
initially formed to convince California migrant farmworkers of the value of unionization. Valdez, who
writes some works in English and others in a blend of English and Spanish, is credited with having
provided momentum to the Chicano theater movement through his highly vivid style and his ability to
place the Chicano experience within a universal American framework. BIOGRAPHICAL
INFORMATION Born into a family of migrant farmworkers in Delano, California, Valdez began
working in the fields at six years of age. Although his education was frequently interrupted by his
family s constant travel, Valdez finished high school and subsequently attended San Jose State

gained an appreciation of agitprop theater, which makes use of political agitation and propaganda to
protest social injustice. Valdez returned to Delano in 1965 to assist César Chávez and the United
Farmworkers Union in their efforts to unionize migrant workers. There Valdez organized the strikers
into a performing group to dramatize the exploitation of farmworkers and to demonstrate the necessity
of unionization for their financial survival. In 1967 Valdez and El Teatro Campesino began touring

The Electoral College Is A Privilege Of A Democratic Society
Voting to elect government officials is a privilege of a democratic society. Every four years, in one of
the most important events in U.S politics, millions of American citizens exercise their voting power by
casting a ballot for a presidential candidate. However, these millions of cast votes elect a small group
of state representatives known as the Electoral College, not the president of the United States. Under
the current voting system the power to elect the president is solely the responsibility of the Electoral
College not the people. Although the Electoral College has a rich history, it is an outdated voting
system and should be replaced by National Popular Vote. This method electing the American president
has been in practice since the eighteenth century. Two years after Americans gained independence
from the British, representatives from twelve of the thirteen original states gathered in Philadelphia to
write the U.S. Constitution. During that era, the states essentially operated as separate republics and
moreover its own legislative governing bodies. The goal of the document was to establish a strong
central government without diminishing state rights (Ross 21). After extensive debate and
compromise, the U.S. Constitution was ratified in 1788, thereby establishing the three branches of
government with executive power granted to the office of president. However, how should the
president be elected? Representatives debated three options: a direct vote by

British Approach to the Regulation of Abortion
What do you consider to be the Strengths and Weaknesses of the British Approach to the Regulation
of Abortion?
Abortion is a procedure carried out to terminate a pregnancy. In 1967, liberal Member of Parliament
David Steel introduced the Abortion Act. This legally permitted abortion to be carried out by a
medical practitioner in England, Scotland and Wales (Glennerster 2000). Since the implementation of
this policy, numbers of abortion have gradually increased. In 2010 almost two hundred thousand
procedures were carried out in England and Wales, ninety six per cent of which were funded by the
National Health Service (Department of Health 2011). To access the strengths and weaknesses of
abortion regulation a number of areas must be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although experiences are subjective, women that have later abortions tend to feel more pain and
distress following the procedure and so early abortion on a personal level, is preferred (British
Pregnancy Advisory Service 2010). Delays caused by the complexity of regulation can therefore, not
only intensify unpleasantness but intensify health risks. The law fails to recognise the responsibility of
the role of nurses in abortion practise today. It needs to be updated so that nurses can continue to lead
the abortion process but without obtaining the signature of two doctors. Training programmes should
be offered to nurses to qualify them in independently carrying out abortions at all gestation stages.
These reforms would avoid time wasting. More time would enable more available appointments for
termination. Ultimately, it would break the barrier of accessing abortion at an early stage (Furedi
2008). Early abortion is considered between five and nine weeks into pregnancy, as outlined access to
this can be difficult. However, when taking into account abortion in general, access if not difficult.
Although the decision of whether a termination can be conducted remains in the hands of doctors, it is
very rare for a request to be denied. Regulations have been criticised for being too lenient in allowing
abortion and making it too simple for

Australian Theater Ruby Moon and Stolen
Contemporary Australian theatre mainly focuses on the reflection of the real Australia and
communicating to the audience real and modern issues/ideas that respond to the social climate and
community. Australian theatre practitioners use various performance styles, techniques and dramatic
conventions to help portray their ideas to their audiences and make them feel a particular way to the

Illiteracy Essay
With the ease of the access of the internet, there is a boom of illiteracy, not just illiteracy in reading
and writing, but also the way that the way that we interact with each other, such as being emotionally
illiterate. Illiteracy is the quality or state of being illiterate; the inability to read or write. Additionally,
being illiterate is showing or being marked by a lack of familiarity with a certain subject, such as
languages.
Illiterate adults experience poorer health outcomes, less financial security, and lower life expectancies
compared to the overall population. Illiteracy has long been recognized that illiteracy is an
intergenerational trend that is passed on from parent to child. It imposes a considerable burden on the
family or support system of the individual in question, as illiterate adults are highly dependent on
others to function and survive. Family members often must do the grocery shopping, pay the bills, fill
out forms and documents, and manage the financial affairs of illiterate. Children s parents who did not
complete school or have trouble with literacy skills are more likely to be illiterate themselves and are
more than five times as likely to drop out of high school as other children. Illiteracy affects society at
large through the financial burden that imposes lost productivity and increased taxes for welfare
programs, prisons, and crime prevention programs.
There is a link between literacy levels and incarceration. Studies have found that seven

Programme : BTECH MANAGEMENT IV Question 1 Explain how the development of strategy at
the LEGO Group reflect the key characteristics of strategic management outlined in section 1.2 and in
the model in Figure 1.4? Strategy is the long term direction of an organization (Johnson, Whittington
and Scholes, 2011, p.3). The LEGO Group started with the manufacture of stepladders, ironing

Due to heavy financial losses and a weak capital structure affecting investment opportunities, the Lego
Group had to look within to find a path forward (Johnson, Whittington and Scholes, 2011). The
company had remained a family run firm for most of it`s history and by Kjeld reinforcing his
responsibility as CEO, it sent a clear signal that the family was behind the company. By divesting in
LEGOLAND parks, writing off other assets and simplifying the corporate structure, this allowed the
LEGO Group to focus on it`s core business. Attention was directed towards resolving distribution
problems and getting closer to retailers in order to understand their sales to end customers. Focus was
placed on cutting costs and the entire procurement process was revised, resulting in fewer suppliers
and significant cost reductions. Supply chain management philosophy changed from outsourced
management, to in house management. This strategy allowed for flexibility and the ability to react to
short term changes in customer demand as a priority over cost (Johnson, Whittington and Scholes,
2011). Research shows that play and the use of toys like LEGO can aid a child`s development
immensely. It helps with basic spatial awareness and colour recognition, but also stimulates a child`s
creative and imaginative thinking (Block Toys, 2011). However, a rapidly evolving society, leaning

The only people who should have known this data were Officer Kripke and Dr. Aiden Hobbes, the

How Does Jay Repeat The Past In The Great Gatsby
In the novel, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the story of a man who is a symbol for the lost
American Dream is told. Can t repeat the past? he cried incredulously. Why of course you can. Jay
Gatsby spoke these blindly hopeful words revealing his fixation with the past and his need to recover
something from it. Through Jay Gatsby s trials and tribulations in his endeavor to recapture the past,
the reader is told of his upbringing and how it planted the seed for his future relationship with wealth,
love, friendship, and ultimately himself.
Growing up as a poor farm boy in North Dakota without an education or any means of connections, it
seemed as though Jay Gatsby was destined to live the life of a struggling man, however, he was
determined to escape his poverty and become a person of importance. Therefore, he devised a
schedule that entailed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Jay s relationship with wealth changes drastically from being a poor farm boy struggling to pay his

Gatsby earned his millions involved methods of supposedly bootlegging by owning his own chain of

however once he attained it, wealth meant something else; Daisy. All of what Gatsby did was to attract
Daisy back into his life. The luxurious mansion, elaborate parties, and fine possessions were all for
her. He thought that if he could just impress her and show her he can take care of her, she would be in
his arms. What separated Gatsby from other wealthy families in the novel is how he viewed money
and its value. He didn t feel a sense of superiority over those less fortunate than he. Gatsby didn t get
anything out of his riches like they did. His ambition was fueled by love and not

John Milton Essays
Satan, as a character, has been satirized, mocked and made foolish in our modern world. John Milton,
however, presents quite a different Satan from the devil on your shoulder image people are used to
seeing. In Paradise Lost, Milton draws on the Bible for his source of Satan s character, thereby
creating a horrifyingly corrupt Satan. Despite this portrayal, readers often find themselves
sympathizing with Satan s cause, and his determination, viewing him as a hero for his cause, as
evidenced by his long, brave speeches. Later, however Satan s speeches begin to show signs of regret,
making the reader question their initial reaction to him. In the end the image of Satan is further
skewed by his own incriminating speech. Thus, the speeches of ... Show more content on

against Heav n s matchless King: Ah Wherefore! he deserved no such return From me, whom he
created what I was In that bright eminence, and with his good Upbraided non, nor was his service hard
(4.39 45)
Looking back, Satan sees that his actions against God were not fully justified. He recalls how glorious
things were, even calling God the matchless King . He further decides that things were better than he
thought, noting that the service was not bad, and that he probably owed service to God for creating
him. After thinking about this, though, Satan attempts to justify his actions by saying O had his
powerful destiny ordained/ Me some inferior angel, I had stood/ Then happy; no unbounded hope had
raised/ Ambition (4.58 61) . Satan feels that it was his prominent position that forced him to become
so ambitious, and that none of these feelings would have emerged if he had been a lesser angel.
This inner battle leads the reader to become slightly suspicious about Satan s description of himself in
earlier books, and their own interpretation of his earlier words. It becomes difficult to view Satan as a
hero, when his own words call into doubt everything for which he stands. While Satan s ultimate
decision is to carry through with his plan, the reader is invited to look through this decision,

African American Athletes s Influence On Society
Over the past 50 years, the views on African American basketball players by society has dramatically
changed. As African Americans have gained rights, athletes have continued to influence society. Since
then, the influence these star players have had on society has become overwhelming. African
American basketball players have gone from being quarantined from the league, to becoming children
s icons. African Americans players were forced to create their own leagues and teams in order to play
professionally. As a result of this, the world famous Harlem Globetrotters were created. The
Globetrotters still have a lasting impact on society up to this date. During the 1950s, when African
Americans began to enter the NBA, white players feared they would be harmful to the league. In the
1970s, just after the ABA and NBA merger, the NBA nearly ended as a result of the lack of fan
interest. White fans disliked the black game and emerging black stars. In just a ten year period, the
views towards these dominant players completely changed, as players like Magic Johnson and
Michael Jordan completely revolutionized the game. These stars forced the public to watch the games,
and appreciate these players. In addition to transforming the league, the views towards African
Americans by the rest of society changed as well as a result of these players. Along the way on this
arduous journey, African Americans successfully transformed American culture and had an everlasting
impact on society.

Progressive Movement In American Education
In this paper, the reader will come to understand the pragmatic/progressive movement in the American
educational system. History of the movement and its patriarch, John Dewey, are explored. Current or
modern philosophers, including Nel Noddings, Paulo Freire, David Labaree, and Richard Mosier are
also discussed. Further, the reader shall become familiar with methods of pragmatic assessment, the
role and practices of the progressive instructor, and an overview of designing curriculum around the
tenants of progressivism. At its core, pragmatism is a student centered philosophy, therefore the focus
of this essay will be how a student is theoretically supposed to gain knowledge from a progressive
classroom.
As the Industrial Revolution ushered modernity into America, new schools of thought came along
with it. Among these schools, and arguably the most popular was the Progressive Movement, which
sought to undo the unintended consequences of rapid technological and social development. The idea
of reform at all levels of society to improve the quality of life for everyone captivated minds,
especially that of John Dewey, who sought to apply the progressive philosophy to the classroom. ...

thought was the evil power of bankers, middlemen, and corrupt politicians. Urban citizens crusaded
for better city services, more efficient municipal government, and, sometimes, the control of social
groups whose habits they hated and feared. Members of various professions, such as social workers

Synthesizer in Popular Culture Music
Technology is gradually plays a part of abundance in popular music by continuously emerging songs
with the use of technological devices. With the experimental use of electronic music instrument, it
sparked a new development for artists to blend in synthesizer sound into their compositions and left a
mark in the music industry (Pinch and Bijsterveld, 2003, pp. 536 537). Synthesizer played a crucial
role in popular music through the impact of the mechanical instrument to deliver a new electronic
sound to inspire bands like Kraftwerk who played a critical role towards electronic music. As the
instrument matured quickly, it shaped up the modern music world progressively through the new
direction sound to have people forgetting the strange sound it once perceived from the listeners (
Champions of sound; Man and machine in perfect harmony, Kraftwerk were the Beatles with
synthesizers, says Mark Edwards , 2009, p. 29).
Background on synthesizer
The name synthesizer was first developed in 1958 for the RCA Mark II Synthesizer programmed from
paper tape. It was then adopted by several developers with the first commercialized synthesizer
created by Robert Moog in 1964 (Pinch and Bijsterveld, 2003, pp. 547 548). The possibility of using a
synthesizer could be endless to composite songs by shaping and exploring the music that may be

The only way I could see race as something such as, the human race . But trying to label someone by

that contributed to the success of change in Civil Rights legislation were that nonviolent protests as

Ethical Ramifications Of Cloning
Cloning has been around since 1952 when Robert Briggs and Thomas King externally fertilized and
developed a leopard frog using somatic cell nuclear transfer. Though scientists had discussed the need
for communication about the ethical ramifications of cloning since as early as 1972, it was not until
the successful cloning of a sheep named Dolly in 1997 that cloning came to the forefront of scientific

surrounding cloning of both animals and humans remain a hot topic, with people divided on both sides

Democrats vs. Republicans Essay
Democrat s vs Republicans In the United States there are only two main political parties to choose
from. The two main parties are the Democrats and the Republicans. There are also many other
political parties to choose from which are called third parties. Third parties may include political
parties such as the Socialist Equality Party and the Peace and Equality party. People can choose to be a
part of any party they want but most go with the common two main parties the Democrats and
Republicans. Democrats and Republicans have many similarities and differences. These mainly occur
in international, social, economic, and domestic issues. Economics is the study of currency and how it

Then comes the issue of campaign finance the two parties have different thoughts on this issue. The
Democrats think that something should be done to eliminate the influence of lobbyists and special
interests in our political parties ( Democrats Unveil ). The Republicans want to fight this by adding a
new constitutional amendment while republicans support this saying that it is supported by our right to
free speech ( Democrats Unveil ). They are trying to change this policy because they both want to help
cleanse the political system of corruption. But even though the two parties both disagree on both
things they each have their own ways they want it done. Social Issues include topics like gay rights,
abortion, social services, and women s rights. The topic abortion is really a touchy subject but the
Democrats believe that abortion is a woman s right and they should have the choice to do so if they
want but the Republicans strongly disagree and think that it should be illegal even if the child is a
product of a rape victim or incest. ( Democrats Unveil ) They disagree because people have different
thoughts and morals they follow and to certain people that s almost just as bad as murder and they can

important issue. The Democrats support gay rights because they believe that everyone should have
equal rights including

  • 2. Testing is Overrated Essay Students dread the time of the year when they stop with their course material and begin to prepare for test. Everyone is in agreement that some type of revolution is needed when it comes to education; eliminating standardized test will aid the reform. The need for standardized testing has proven to be ineffective and outdated; some leading educationalist also believe this because the tests do not measure a student s true potential. This will save money, stop labeling, and alleviate stress in students and teachers. Now more than ever, money is scarce and one way to increase this money supply is by the elimination of standardized testing. The cost for standardized testing in 2nd graders is roughly estimated to be between $2 $4 million, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These tests tend to cause the student s too much stress and puts pressure on them to obtain a certain score on these test that are required on a yearly basis. Teachers also set aside too much time to teach strategies for taking the test and lecturing on how to eliminate some choices. According to Kathy Frandle this is A huge waste of instruction time (Fridy). Furthermore, the unneeded stress generally leads to a state of anxiety and it is setting too many of them up for devastating failure and, consequently, lowered self esteem (Perrone). Each state teaches their students different material at different rates and this is why some states place pressure of testing companies to dumb down the test (Margie). Each state s tests are created by the state; therefore, they can make the test as easy as possible to make everyone succeed on it. Some states have districts in poverty and cannot afford the best textbooks or technologies; therefore, their students do not reach their potential. When these districts have scores that are too low they do not receive federal grants; therefore, this puts them into a further bind. Standardized testing does not occur at the college level where someone might assume that it would be mandated. When someone is taking a test to enter a college, wouldn t it be logical for a ... • 3. Aristotle Happiness In Greek Essay Aristotle came to the conclusion that not only is the life of contemplation the highest life but it is also self sufficient and believed that to be happy one also must be self sufficient. In Book one Aristotle states But we must think about this later. For now, we take what is self sufficient to be that which on its own makes life worthy of choice and lacking in nothing (Aristotle, Nicomachean Ethics, 39). Aristotle believed that it is easy enough to see that we have a inclination for money, pleasure and honour because we think that these things will make us happy. • 4. System of Particles and Rotational Motion Centre of Mass... SYSTEM OF PARTICLES AND ROTATIONAL MOTION CENTRE OF MASS AND ROTATIONAL MOTION INTRODUCTION For describing the motion of rigid bodies, we shall introduce the key concept of centre of mass . This concept enables us to understand how we can apply justifiably the Newton s laws of motion, in essentially the same form to objects of large size including even the astronomical objects like the planets and the stars. KINDS OF MOTION OF A RIGID BODY A rigid body may have three kinds of motion (1) Pure Translation Motion in such a motion, every particle of the body has the same velocity at a particular instant of time. For e.g. when a rectangular block slides down an inclined plane, any point like P1,P2 of the block, at any instant of time ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hence the centre of mass is closer to the massive particle. NOTE 1. The centre of mass may lie outside the object. For e.g. the centre of mass of ring lies outside it. 2. Centre of mass depends on the distribution of mass within the body and is closer to heavy part but for identical particles C.M. lies at the midpoint of the line joining the point masses. 3. If an object is symmetrical and have uniform distribution of mass then its C.M. coincides with geometrical centre. 4. The position of C.M. is independent from the coordinate system. E.g. the centre of mass of a ring of uniform thickness is at its centre whatever be the coordinate system. CENTRE OF MASS OF LAMINAR OBJECTS A laminar object means a two dimensional distribution of mass of negligible thickness e.g. paper of your copy. • 5. Advantages Of Depreciation Depreciation in accounting concept is the gradual conversion of the cost of a tangible capital asset or fixed asset into an operational expense (called as depreciation expenses) over the asset s estimated useful life. There have 3 objectives of the depreciation: 1) Spread a large expenditure (purchase price of the asset) proportionately over a fixed period to match the revenue received from it. 2) Reduce the taxable income by charging the amount of depreciation against the company s total income. In effect, charging of depreciation means recovery of invested capital, by gradual sale of the asset over the years during which output or service are received from it. 3) Reflect the reduction in the book value of asset due to obsolescence or wear and tear. • 7. The Classical Cultures Of China Vs. China India vs China The classical civilizations of China and India were two of the most important and extant civilizations with major political development. The advanced technology like the ox drawn plows, paper, silk roads, etc shaped China s development. India was manifested by artistry, trade, and exceptional advances in mathematics. There were three main dynasties in classical China known as the Zhou, Qin, and Han Dynasty while India was founded by three empires: the Mauryan, Kushan, and Gupta empires. Even though these civilizations evolved around the same time, there are crucial differences and similarities. Religion, beliefs, hierarchical and patriarchal systems, and government reveal the distinction between the two civilizations. Confucianism and Daoism were the major belief systems in classical China that shaped their society. These belief systems were not exactly religions;they were created to teach individuals how to live life. Confucianism was introduced by Confucius, also known as Kung Fuzi, around 570 BCE. It focused on reverence for elders, self humility, and respect for rulers and the people being ruled. During the reign of Wu Ti, he emphasized values of Confucian philosophy and recorded the Confucian doctrine in a book called The Analects. The problems Confucius set out to rectify, notably political disorder, were approached through an emphasis on individual virtuous behavior (World Civilizations The Global Experience). When the Han Dynasty was first founded, it was heavily influenced by Shi Huangdi, a brutal and strict leader of the Qin Dynasty who ruled people under many rules and regulations. Confucius wanted to terminate that method of ruling and knock some sense into people on how to live life without brutality. Instead of living under hundreds of regulations/laws, Confucius developed a sense of shame that changed the society as a whole. People began to understand morals and values which formulated peace and prosperity. As a result, the Mandate of Heaven was passed which stated that the ruler is blessed by Gods and once the ruler becomes too corrupt, the dynasty would collapse. Contrary to Confucianism, legalism indicated that only rules and regulations would create order in a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The scaffolding on which playwright plots a tale to frame or shape the action Mira Fellner, THINK theatre (Boston: Pearson, 2013), 51. While reading a play, knowledge is applied in a critical perspective. Our mind tries to classify it in a coherent form into one of the types of dramatic structures that have been studied by us. It should be possible now to differentiate a climactic structure from a serial, episodic or circular one. Our goal is to clarify the ideas presented in a play. For this, it is imperative to acknowledge that each play has its own structure. Using the tools presented to us on Think theater we move on now from the theory to the practice. We will be thoroughly working on the structural analysis of Amphitryon . A three act play, by Moliere. On the very start we meet the main characters, first is Amphitryon as the general of the Thebans. Next, we have Sosia , Amphitryon s manservant. To Kill A Mockingbird And Persepolis Comparison Essay Compare how the composers of To Kill a Mockingbird and Persepolis use characterisation to explore the conflict between personal and public worlds. Everyone is different, has their own personality and views but it is not an uncommon occurrence when their way of thinking clashes or is challenged with others. Harper Lee s novel To Kill a Mockingbird (T.K.A.M) and Marjane Satrapi s graphic novel Persepolis, while set in different time periods, explore similar issues of discrimination which are shown through techniques used by the authors. In both books, Harper Lee and Marjane Satrapi have built their stories around young female protagonists, Scout a hard headed and impressionable tomboy from T.K.A.M and Marjane from Persepolis. By having the stories be narrated from a child s perspective, it allows readers to understand the characters unsophisticated and open minds. While living in different settings and having separate values, both Scout and Marjane come across aspects of sexism and misogyny. From a young age, Scout had learnt from her older brother, Jem, that things associating with girls are bad and things associating with boys are good, Jem told me I was being a girl, that girls always imagined things, that s why other people hated them so, and if I started behaving like one I could just go off and find some to play with. Similarly, in many circumstances, no matter how dire an event might seem, there is always a beacon of hope amongst doleful situations. From every ending comes a new beginning. The poem, November Cotton Flower , written by Jean Toomer, describes (the conditions when slaves were under the Harlem Renaissance) the conditions in which slaves were under during the Harlem Renaissance where there seems to be no prospect for a brighter future for the slaves in the society. Throughout the poem, Toomer develops his theme of hope and desire for a brighter future by exhausting literary devices such as metaphors, structure, and imagery. The November Cotton Flower is a poem that not only depicts a late autumn setting where the cotton season comes to an end, but also captures the agony and essence of slavery with the usage of metaphors and similes. In the poem, a product of Harlem renaissance, Jean Toomer illustrates the everyday life struggles of the African Americans by conveying his point of view through depleting metaphors of the growing season. • 21. The Electoral College Is A Privilege Of A Democratic Society Voting to elect government officials is a privilege of a democratic society. Every four years, in one of the most important events in U.S politics, millions of American citizens exercise their voting power by casting a ballot for a presidential candidate. However, these millions of cast votes elect a small group of state representatives known as the Electoral College, not the president of the United States. Under the current voting system the power to elect the president is solely the responsibility of the Electoral College not the people. Although the Electoral College has a rich history, it is an outdated voting system and should be replaced by National Popular Vote. This method electing the American president has been in practice since the eighteenth century. Two years after Americans gained independence from the British, representatives from twelve of the thirteen original states gathered in Philadelphia to write the U.S. Constitution. During that era, the states essentially operated as separate republics and moreover its own legislative governing bodies. The goal of the document was to establish a strong central government without diminishing state rights (Ross 21). The law fails to recognise the responsibility of the role of nurses in abortion practise today. Training programmes should be offered to nurses to qualify them in independently carrying out abortions at all gestation stages. These reforms would avoid time wasting.
