on his first. Wagner worked on Parsifal on and off for more than thirty years, while he barely
spent a fraction of that amount of time composing his first opera (Rovi). He finished Die Feen
when he was only twenty years old, clearly showing that he did not put as much time into trying
to perfect his work. His final opera, Parsifal, is often referred to as one of his best compositions,
reflecting the amount of time and effort he put into working on it before deeming it complete. It
conveys that Wagner became somewhat of a perfectionist later on in his career, as his mature
works took longer to finish than those he had composed when he was younger. Something else
that should be noted, is that Parsifal is much longer than Die Feen. Parsifal has thirty nine
movements, while Die Feen only has twenty. This is most likely due to the fact that Wagner took
a longer amount of time before he finally came around to completing Parsifal. Wagner introduced
different arrangements in Parsifal that were unprecedented in his previous works, such as the
specific composition complementing the acoustics that are in his Bayreuth theater. The
complexity of his last opera is much greater than most of those that came before it. Die Feen was
his introductory piece that would serve as a stepping stone to where his career would finally
come to an end. Despite both operas, having a source of inspiration before their composition, the
content of these two particular operas shows no relation. Die Feen was inspired by a fantasy tale
that had to do with romance, while Parsifal was inspired by the epic poem that centered more
around religion. Finally, the uniquity of his last opera is made apparent by the use of the
contrabassoon. Wagner had implemented the contrabassoon one

Background Since the Industrial Revolution, there has been an increased presence of pollutants and
carcinogens in the environment, specif ically in urban areas.1 The presence of airborne pollutants
can lead to an increase in allergic reactions and asthma rates. A common airborne pollutant is
carbon monoxide (CO), which is commonly found in diesel exhaust. It is an odorless gas produced
from me thane and non methane hydrocarbon oxidation.2 The toxic gas eliminates and takes the
place of oxygenin the form of carboxy hemoglobin when it binds to hemoglobin in red blood cells.
It also affects the binding sites of heme groups, which complicates the transfer of oxygen to
tissues.3 The majority of deaths from carbon monoxidepoisoning is brought on from car exhaust.4
Between the years 1979 and 1988, 57% of deaths from carbon monoxide poi soning were brought
from car exhaust. There tend to be higher rates of carbon monoxide poisoning from car exhaust in
northern regions, where temperatures are relatively low (Figure 1). 5
A way to approach the elimination of carbon monoxide from car exhaust is through the use of
organometallic catalysts. Through the use of a catalyst, a reaction can occur at a faster rate and at
lower activation energy. Said catalysts serve are of great commercial interest because they
essentially convert simple mole cules into more complex ones.6 Unlike homogeneous catalysts,
heterogeneous catalysts are not in the same phase as how the reac tion is occurring. Because of
this, the catalysts are considered to be cheaper and easier to obtain. It is also considered more envi
ronmentally friendly to use.6 7
Selective heterogeneous catalysis can be performed in terms of oxidation and reduction. A typical
reduction reaction would re quire an oxidation agent and the use of certain intermediates, just like
