Ecocriticism In Silent Spring
As a criticism of the trend, Ecological criticism originated from the United States. The publication
of Silent Spring written by Rachel Carson symbolizes the beginning of the American ecological
movement. Just as Uncle Tom s Cabin written by Harriet Beecher Stowe started Civil War, Silent
Spring is the triggers of American environmental protection movement. Since then, ecocriticism
gradually emerged as the times demand.
This concept can be traced back to the 1970s when Joseph Meek came up with the term literary
ecology in his essay entitled The Comedy of Survival: Studies in Literary Ecology in 1974,
advocating that literary criticism should explore the relationship between humans and other
species, and carefully examine and explore the literature s impact on human s behaviors and ...

The first stage of ecocriticism is the research about how nature and environment are expressed in the
literature text. Next stage of ecocriticism concentrated on the promotion of nature writing literature

and writing styles of the former nature writing works. While the third stage of ecocriticism, the
scholars try to establish the new concept of ecological poetics in the hope of enhancing the
ecological theories construction through the concept of ecological system. Numerous ecological
theories have been founded during the three stages, such as Albert Schweitzer s ethic of reverence
for life, Leopold s ecological holism, Paul W.Taylor s biocentrism, Holmes Rolston s the value of
nature, Tom Regan s animal rights, Peter Singer s animal liberation and so on. This dissertation just
attempts to interpret the ecological thoughts in Toms River by using some of the ecocriticism
theories to reveal the truth about environmental pollution and the attitude and actions people should

Contents Of The Dead Man s Pocket
The working class can relate to the theme of the short story Contents of the Dead Man s Pocket,
by Jack Finney. More often than not, people strive to get to the top of their profession, but at
what cost? The majority of people spend countless hours of their life working to provide for
themselves and their loved ones. The irony of working all these hours to provide for your loved
ones is that you will not see them nearly as much as desired because of work. In my opinion, the
above passage is important to the story because Tom is now inside lying on the floor as a new
man who knows what is important in life. Tom works for Wholesale Groceries and has been
spending most of his free time off of work doing research on grocery store displays. The only
copy of his research flies out of the window of his tenth story apartment due to a draft. In this
moment, readers discover how obsessed Tom really is with work: He knew he was going out
there in the darkness, after the yellow sheet fifteen feet beyond his reach (page 4). At this point in
time, Tom is willing to risk everything, including his life, to ensure that he can elevate above his
coworkers. This perilous behavior is the complete opposite from the Tom we read about in the
above passage from the end of the story. Tom transitions from chasing a paper out on a ledge ten
stories up, to laughing at the same paper flying back out of the window. Tom undergoes character
growth throughout the story, but it is the most

The Awakening Feminist Analysis
The influence of culture within society may lead to detrimental outcomes. Oppression is not the
intention of society, though through harsh political and social standards one will feel compelled to
make brash decisions. Kate Chopin, author of The Awakening, provides feminist criticism of
traditional motherhood, marriage, and conformity. EdnaPontellier, the female protagonist within the
novel, grows to desire independence and control over her life. Throughout the story, Edna
epitomizes a feminist attitude by defying the regressive standards of the Creole culture, as
exemplified through Chopin s use of literary elements including symbol, setting, and character
development. Edna gradually sheds her fictitious self in attempt to become an... Show more content

A bird with a broken wing was beating the air above, reeling, fluttering, circling, disabled down,
down to the water (115). Chopin uses the birds to symbolize Edna, as her wings were not strong
enough to support her. The expectations of society compelled Edna to take her own life. A life
without individuality or authenticity was one Edna decided was not worth living.
Edna s peers view her actions as thoughtless and childish because she frequently makes impulsive
decisions and later regrets them. As such, Edna often shares the symbolic nature of a child. Edna
s behavior after an argument with LГ©once exemplifies her thoughtlessness. She stopped,
taking off her wedding ring, and flung it upon the carpet (52). Edna is unhappy with her
marriage because she never loved Leonce in the first place. Unwed women held lesser merit and
stability than married women did. Edna ultimately wed Leonce both to initially abide by society
s expectations and to upset her father. Edna, now desiring another man, despises the Catholic
restriction to annul. Later, when Edna confides in Adele, she admits, I would give up the
unessential; I would give my money, I would give my life for my children; but I wouldn t give
myself (47). Not only does Edna consider her life to be inessential due to her social standing, she
would not sacrifice the more important lively aspects because she herself still feels childish greed.

The Cove Dolphins
Approximately 20,000 dolphins are killed legally every year and thousands more are sold
inhumanely in Taiji, Japan. The majority of these dolphins are sold to marine parks and
aquariums around the world. Louie Psihoyos and Ric O Barry s eye opening documentary The
Cove raises awareness about the gruesome killings of dolphins in Japan. Ironically Ric O Barry
feels that he initiated this problem, as he was one of the first dolphintrainers/capturers in the 1960 s
for the show Flipper. After witnessing the star, Flipper the Bottlenose Dolphin commit suicide in his
arms, he became a marine activist, which led to the production of this documentary to stop the
problem he created. Louie and Rick expose the plight of the dolphin, the potential... Show more

The universal image of the dolphin portrays the illusion that dolphins are always happy because
they consistently appear to be smiling. This, however, is nature s greatest deception as it is simply
the shape of their mouth. Throughout the film the juxtaposition of the beauty of nature is harshly
contrasted with the ugliness of the underlying secrets of the industry in Japan and around the
world. The fishing industry is largest in Japan therefore that is where this movie was filmed. The
captive industry has become a lucrative billion dollar worldwide trade, with all money made from
the exploitation, imprisonment and lifelong suffering of these living beings. A live dolphin
captured for a marine mammal park can be valued up to $200,000. The most shocking fact is that
this is legal. The International Whaling Commission outlawed commercial whaling in 1986, but
dolphin hunts remain legal. The film s impact was largely due to the emotional ties between O
Barry and dolphins. Although the filmmakers are extremely biased, his convincing pleads for our
help are strategically made at the most emotional moments. He believes that bottlenose dolphins are
being hunted the most The fishermen are searching for bottlenose dolphins like flipper . Luckily
this type of dolphin is not yet endangered but this

Deaf Persuasive Speech
Take a second, close your eyes, and imagine silence. Nothing is going on around you; you can t
even hear a pin drop. Not a sound to be heard for miles. You open your eyes expecting the world
to come to life, and everything to breath wavelengths into your ears, but instead, you are met
with an ocean of nothingness. People hustle about you, yelling at you to move out of their way,
but still... nothing. This is the reality of a deaf person s world. Every day they wake up to this,
and nothing more. When out in public, they must learn to communicate, to fend for themselves
while the hearing go on with their lives as normal. We don t even realize how blessed we are as a

Although it is possible for deaf children to attend public schools and succeed, research suggests
that it is best for them to have their own environment, says Meagan McDonough. It is already
hard enough for a hearing student to find his/her place in the classroom, but when you add being
deaf to the list, a major challenge presents itself. This deaf student must work extra hard to keep
up and be able to read the lips of his/her teachers and fellow peers, and learn to communicate.
Even though accommodations are made and sometimes interpreters are given, it is hard for the
student to feel welcome. If this student were to attend a deaf school, he/she would not have to
work so hard and would find it much easier to communicate and socialize both of which are major
focuses in a high school student s life. In Meagan McDonough s article Deaf and Hard of Hearing
Children in Public Schools , she states that public schools might not be best for deaf students,
but if they start out in a deaf school and eventually integrate into a hearing school, they will be
better off and be able to keep up. I agree with her in that it is good for a child to at least start his
/her education in a deaf school so that the base of their foundation is laid by something they can
understand. If later they feel comfortable trying out a public school, they may do so and will
find it easier to be and feel included. However, if ASL was to be offered in all public schools and
colleges, it would give hearing students the chance to be able to communicate and be more
comfortable with deaf

Essay on Mammalian Kidney Investigation
Mammalian Kidney Investigation
Background Information:
The kidneys are dark red bean shaped organs that are a very important pair of organs that
perform many functions. The kidneys have a convex side and a concave side. They are each
about the size of a fist. The kidneys are located near the middle back of a human, just below the
rib cage, one on each side of the spine. One kidney is located below the spleen on the left side of
the body, whereas the other kidney is located just below the liver. The kidneys receive blood
from the paired renal arteries and the blood is drained into the paired renal veins. In a human
body, the kidneys process about 200 quarts of blood to sift out about 2 quarts of waste products
and extra water everyday. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Animal Rights At Factory Farms
Madison Bowdish
Dr. Brian Onishi
PHIL 229
15 Dec 2016
Animal Rights in Factory Farms The idea that industrial farming is bad for the environment is
well known, but what people do not think about is horrible practice of factory farms within
industrial farming. Factory farms are inhumane and not only because the animal is being
slaughtered, but because of the way the animals are treated before the are killed. A person would
think that if they were to be innocently killed that they would want to be treated with respect and
dignity before they die. In this paper, I will argue that animals have rights through a utilitarian view
and that they should not be treated in an inhumane way. The framework I plan to discuss is Peter
Singer s utilitarian view on animal rights. A general idea of what utilitarianismis can be described
as the need for the many outweigh the needs of a few, or majority rule when it comes to
happiness. Singer s criteria for how a being gets rights is based on the ability to feel pleasure or
pain. With this criteria it allows people who are mentally handicapped, the senile, and babies to
have rights (Hozien). Most would agree that it would be cruel to not give these people rights, so
Singer argues that since animals can feel pain and pleasure they also have rights. Although he
believes that they should be treated equal he does admit that there is a range or difference of pain.
He equates this to racism or in this case speciesism. For instance he states that

The Selma-Montgomery March Essay
The Selma Montgomery March
The Civil Rights Movement began in order to bring equal rights and equal voting rights to black
citizens of the US. This was accomplished through persistent demonstrations, one of these being the
Selma Montgomery March. This march, lead by Martin Luther King Jr., targeted at the
disenfranchisement of negroes in Alabama due to the literacy tests. Tension from the governor and
state troopers of Alabama led the state, and the whole nation, to be caught in the violent chaos
caused by protests and riots by marchers. However, this did not prevent the March from Selma to
Montgomery to accomplish its goals abolishing the literacy tests and allowing black citizens the
right to vote.

The brutality from this event can be summarized by one marcher who was reported saying, My
God, we re being killed. This malevolent act sent the entire nation in an uproar, sparking riots in
major US cites and even in Toronto. The protests and riots gained so much popular support as to
gain the attention of President Lyndon B. Johnson, who declared that he deplored the brutality. King
was also determined to march from Selma to Montgomery in order to present the governor with the
proposal for voting rights and to continue fighting the oppression ( Central Point 24).
March 16 saw a demonstration in Montgomery, Alabamain which 580 demonstrators planned to
march from the Jackson Street Baptist Church to the Montgomery County Courthouse (Reed 26).
These protestors included a large number of northern college students. They met a police line a
few blocks from the Courthouse and were forbidden from proceeding because they did not have a
parade permit (Reed 26). Across the street came 40 or so students who planned on joining the
group en route to the Courthouse. Eventually a few of the demonstrators dared to cross the street,
led by James Forman who had organized the march. When it seemed the whole group would cross,
police took action, with mounted officers and volunteers arriving at 1:12 pm. Riding into the small
group of protestors, they forced most to withdraw, but a few stood fast around a utility pole where
horsemen began to beat them. A posseman

Foreshadowing In Bible
All things considered, God always had in mind one plan for salvation. Since, the promise made
to Adam and Eve in Genesis 3:15 were He says, And I will put enmity between thee and the
woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel
the devil had tried to deceive us with the biggest lie, that there are many ways to come to God. As a
result, most religions view God as a being that modifies according to peoples standards, peoples
view point, peoples believe, and their own interpretation of the Bible. However, that is not how
God runs the universe. In fact, the main reason for God to establish the temple among the Jews

Another key point, is that every sacrifice ceremony was providing just a temporary covering of
once sin, and could never take it away forever. On the other hand, the foreshadowing of the
perfect Lamb, would come to remove sin forever. That is what the temple represented, that there
is one way to heaven, the lamb slain, Jesus Christ. Now, the time has come to have faith in Jesus
Christ for salvation of our souls. The temple is no longer needed. In effect, no longer we need to
wait for the foreshadow of Jesus Christ, we no longer need to slain a sheep to cover our sins, we
no longer need to seek God on an altar, as he dwells within us through the Holy Spirit. God has
never given us a spirit of fear, rather a spirit of faith in Jesus Christ. Under those circumstances,
when Jesus declared, I am the way, is the reason why Jews hated Him. As a result, they were
intolerance with Him and Christians, until this day. The Bible speaks of Jesus Christ becoming the
stumbling rock for the Jews by not accepting his vicarious death. In fact, the incredible thing about
Jesus is that He is the way, the truth and the life no one comes to the father but through

machinery, he worked as a blacksmith, invented a nail making machine, he then attended Yale
college and graduated with a degree in engineering. Eli Whitney is an American inventor who is
best known for his invention of the cotton gin as it was one of the most influential inventions
during the Industrial Revolution shaping the economy of the Antebellum North and South. The
invention of the Cotton gin made cotton into one of the most profitable crop, which it reinforced
the economic foundation of slavery in the United States. After his invention, he later turned his
attention into manufacturing muskets for the newly formed Army of the United States in where
this time he made sure to secured contracts with the government. Eli Whitney continued inventing

Similarities Between Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas And...
Within Hunter S. Thompsons book Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and the movie Easy Rider
directed by Dennis Hopper the involvement of drugs is important as the represent a greater picture
of the American values and where they are headed. The use of drugs is looked down upon by
American values due to the effects that it has on people, and the amount of deaths it leads to each
year. The use of drugs does not fit in with the American values of having the American Dream,
which is represented through having the perfect family, a house within the suburbs, and stable job.
Drugs play no part in the American Dream, but rebel against such a notion such as the American
dream. Both the book and movie have many similarities in the way that druguse plays a major
factor within the characters lives, while at the same time serving a different purpose for both the
book and novel. Within Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas Raoul Duke and Easy Riders Wyatt and

Notes On Real Estate Investment Trust
Real estate investment trust
4.1 Research on REITs
Real estate can be divided into two types: direct and indirect real estate investment. Direct real
estate investment means investors directly buy and sell property. REIT is an indirect way of real
estate investment. REITs is a type of security, it means investors buy shares of a real estateportfolio
managed by professional fund manager.
Publicly traded REITs and non traded REITs
Many REITs are registered with the SEC( U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission) and are
publicly traded on a stock exchange. These are publicly traded REITs. Others may be registered

traded REITs).
Publicly traded REITs
Publicly traded REITs (also called exchange traded REITs) have their securities registered with
the SEC, file regular reports with the SEC and their securities are listed for trading on an

Hillary Clinton Sexism Essay
America is a country that prides itself on equal opportunity for all. However, the results of the
recent presidential election have demonstrated a major disparity in the equality of that opportunity.
Donald Trump, with almost no political qualifications, beat out Hillary Clinton, a highly qualified
individual, for the presidency. In addition, many scandals were attached to the Trump campaign,
mainly his disparaging comments against women. The success of his campaign, after all the
scandals, can be attributed to sexism in the general American population. Ingrained sexism in
American society constituted a major reason as to why Hillary Clinton lost the presidential election.
Women are often seen as less competent than men, even when they are equally qualified. The
number of women holding political office in the United States is dismal. Women, while... Show

Boeing Engineering Strike Case Analysis
Negotiation Efforts: The Boeing Engineering Strike In 2000, the Boeing Company found itself in
an unprecedented crisis. Over 17,000 engineers walked off the job site in a massive strike initiative.
Attempts to end and mitigate the strike provide a backdrop for negotiation process analysis in a

Why I Write Joan Didion On Keeping A Notebook Summary
Response to Didion Readings Throughout her writing Joan Didion brings up many important
points and reasons to write that apply to all types of people from professional writers to average
people. Didion uses an approach that allows many people to understand the importance of writing
in everyone s life. In both Why I Write and On Keeping a Notebook readers are able to find the
personal importance of writingfrom recalling the past, to finding an answer, and even simply
expressing personal thoughts and feelings. Memory and recalling the past is an important part of
the lives of many people. Everyone has a memory that they hold dear or that reminds them of a
special part of their life. Through her writing, Didion amplifies the importance of writing down
the things that happen directly to a person or occur around them. She believes that writing down
what is happening is a way to reconnect to a memory. It may be a small and random detail about
something that sparks the memory of a very important part of life or reminds us of the person we
used to be. The things written may seem insignificant but it all comes back and has an important

Comparing The Ways Writer Present Doubts, Uncertainties...
Controlled Assessment Alby Joseph
Compare the ways writer present doubts, uncertainties and conflict in the minds of the characters.
Poems are the most simplistic way to express one s feelings and beliefs through writing. Poets
mostly try express love, loss, death, some may speak from their own experience or for the sake of
their characters who tend to be quite sophisticated. They tend to write about these 3 topics
commonly due to the fact that practically everyone has experienced this sort of emotion. Poetry has
existed since man could write, to Aristotle, to Victorian times and now to the present day where it
is internationally used. Poems are now used to promote movements for the benefit of the world,
varying from poverty to the sustainability of the environment; of which most have been
successful due to poetry being able to connect with the reader, even if they are not in the same
situation. However they are still able to feel what their character is feeling and what state of mind
they are in. Poems also tend to be short so that the reader does not loose concentration nor loose the
power of the poem, but instead the poet chooses to write to a short limithowever they choose their
words carefully so that the reader will be intrigued and contemplated the whole way through the
poem however leave the poembeing fascinated.

Although she is jealous of her sister, Maggie more admires her than anything. It is, however,
upsetting that the narrator never suggests Dee has any admiration or respect for Maggie or
herself, for that matter. The story never even suggests that Dee feels sorry for Maggie, instead it
can be interpreted that Dee just looks down on her sister, as she does the rest of her family.
The reader can also learn about the girls from how they treat others. Just like everything else,
they are opposites. Dee would always look anyone in the eye. Hesitation was no part of her
nature (92) while Maggie walks chin on chest, eyes on ground, feet in shuffle (94). Mama also
knows that while her sister is there Maggie will be nervous and stand hopelessly in corners,
homely and ashamed of the burns scars down her arms and legs (92). While Maggie has always
felt inferior, Dee seems haughty and kind of has a superiority complex. Dee is also implied to
be manipulative. Dee would read to her mother and Maggie knowing it was literature beyond
their comprehension just so she could show off. She used to read to us without pit; forcing
words, lies, other folks habits, whole lives upon us two. She washed us in a river of make

The Perception Of The Human Sciences
Each of us are different in many ways and that fact cannot possible be disputed by anyone who
has any back ground in the human sciences, as it has been scientifically proven that we all have
unique finger prints, DNA, hair, looks, behavior and facial expressions and the combination of
these things make us unique personality types so to speak. We also function from two different
perspectives and we need to understand how each one of us functions. We each like to think that
we are special (which we are) and in that portrayal system, we mostly portray what we perceive
we want people to think about us. On the other side of the coin we have a reality in what we
truly believe about ourselves and the way we feel inwardly. Many of us become disillusioned
with our true inner picture, simple because of a misunderstanding of our personal purpose in life.
The fact that we allow this dissatisfaction to creep into our lives, we create an inner insecurity
within ourselves and we then start looking at others or alternatively we start behaving like others,
which is completely outside our true personality, thereby attempting to look different, behave
different, think different, dress different and when looking at our big picture, become dissatisfied
with our true personality, allowing society to name us as a personality type which is definitely
going to influence our level to be successful in life. Society has made us believe that we need to
conform to a standard of behavior, which then

Stereotypes In Uglies By Scott Westerfeld
The image of a person is often something that gets judged very quickly in society. People often see
others and instantly think of something about that person. Men, women and children are all
outcast for many different reasons. Society judges people for traits including, skin colour, gender,
hair color, and body type. The media and society constantly make people feel bad about the way
they look. In Uglies, by Scott Westerfeld, the main theme is about finding one s identity in a world
that already has one made up for them. Despite this theme, the characters in the novel do not strive
to overcome society s stereotypes. The pretties, specials and the uglies do not try to break out of
society s ways and find their own identities. After the operations,... Show more content on

Machiavelli s Views On Nature Of Good Rule Essay
Both Locke and Machiavelli share the philosophy of improving the establishment but their point
of views regarding the nature of good rule varies. Machiavelli presents a rather extreme notion of
the Prince disregarding individual rights for the benefit of the principality. He justifies these
violations of rights, by implementing that it is necessary in order to maintain order and power.
Machiavelli s idea of the nature of good rule benefited the society of that specific time period
through the means of letting human nature take rule of the principality. Locke on the other hand,
argues that people need absolute control over the establishment in order to maintain order and
equality. This argument is derived from the concept of the good rule of nature. In a conversation
between both men, Locke would achieve the greater argument when it comes the nature of good
rule but does not do so without certain restraints. These restraints will be pointed out by
Machiavelli and a counter argument will be presented by Locke, which justifies his theories and
strengthens his argument regarding the nature of good rule. Machiavelli begins his argument, by
justifying an authoritarian governing system by the means of hereditary rule. He believes that
people always comply with The Princes rule because they act on love. Machiavelli explains this
when he states that, The hereditary prince has less cause and less necessity to offend, hence it
happens that he will be more loved (The prince, 3). For

Steaming is a quick way to cook several vegetables. Steamed vegetables will not burn or
caramelize the way the vegetables are cooked in a skillet or in the oven. A vegetable steam is a

You may hate the gas prices now but if I had my way I would raise it a whole dollar more than what
it is now. Now before you gouge my eyes out let me explain. Gas prices should go up a dollar for
three reasons. First, we need to build a high speed rail system in America. We are long overdue for

A high speed rail system would be a good idea for many reasons. Primarily, it would cut down on
the amount of people who drive or fly. In 1997 the government issued a report about how high
speed trains would help solve congestion problems that face our nation s highways and airports
(www.fra.dot.gov/o/hsgt/index.html). Also, most high speed trains require less fuel than your
average airplane or automobile.
Money left over form the tax, or if we choose to continue the tax just for this purpose, would be
used to help fund research on alternative fuels. They have already made a great many advances
with alternative fuels and hybrid cars. Honda has already made a that can travel up to 700 miles
on one tank of gas. And it can get up to 70 mpg on the highway (www.consumerenergycenter.org
/transportation/afv/hybrid.html). This kind of progress has all been done within the last decade.
Imagine with a little extra funding the progress that could be made. Imagine, driving down the
road, getting about 100 to 150 mpg. You would no longer have to even worry about gas prices
because you would only have to fill up about once a month, which leads me to the next reason
why raising gas prices would be a good idea.
If we raise gas prices now it ll mean a lot lower prices later on. Simple math will

The Cultural Invasion of Kenya
A screeching yell ripped through the house that Wednesday evening, Ahhhhh, we re being

Look, I whispered in disbelief. A few seconds of silence followed. There they were, the words I
never thought would appear on our 29 inch Sony screen: Sizzlin Hot Country . The appearance of
American country music on the Kenyan airwaves was the latest sign that American culture had

on many local channels. While walking around in school, I would find students mimicking the
popular 2 Pac and Dr. Dre , with a Wesssaaid sounding in the air occasionally. A friend was also
nicknamed Krayzie Bone, after a member of the Bone Thugs N Harmony group. Baggy jeans

School dances and parties rarely featured traditional songs. Instead, American icons like Aaliyah, Dr

Essay on Economic Impact of Telehealth
Economic Impact The economic impact of telehealth is a critical factor to examine when looking at
the feasibility of incorporating such technologies into practice. Exploration of economics is also
essential as it has been posited that telehealth has the potential to deliver care to individuals that is
costsaving in nature (Wade, Karnon, Elshaug, Hiller, 2010). Furthermore, the estimated expenditure
on telehealthservices and technology is expected to reach into the billions of dollars (Berger,
2010). However, there are myriad individual elements that may be considered in the broad subject

Caffery, Smith and Scuffham (2008) commented that email based telemedicine methodology is
often considered a low cost form of telemedicine. In their study, they took into account staff costs
(including counselors and administrative staff) and fixed costs (development and implementation
of the email service). Fixted costs totaled approximately $11,995 per year for the development and
implementation of a purpose written email based telemedicine system. Furthermore, supervisory
costs totaled $61,454 per year. In another study, Palmas and colleagues (2010) accounted for the
estimated cost of delivering case management services to underserved populations. The authors
found that the cost of the telemedicine equipment and supplies for the clinical team, for the first
four years of the study totaled over $100,000 (Palmas, et al., 2010). This does not take into account
salaries, the costs of the bioinformatics team, and vendor costs associated with the project, which
total into the millions. The higher costs are associated with the level of technology required.
Palmas, et al., utilized a telemedicine system (IDEATel) that, according to Shea (2007), combines
video conferencing, access to the American Diabetes Association portal, remote glucose and blood
pressure monitoring, and patient access to their own clinical data and a secure messaging service.

The Practicality Of Network Security
Introduction: As a concept, the practicality of Network Security includes using activities designed
to protect a user s network. Specifically, the core aim for this security is to protect the usability,
reliability, integrity, and safety of data on that network. In Network Securitythere are numerous
applications and software programs that are used by individuals which perform their own roles in
securing network data. The most common and possibly the most essential application used to
protect network data is known as a firewall. A firewall is a program that is designed to act as a
barrier between an external network and the users. It is fundamentally designed to stop hackers,

Looking toward the future with the exponential evolution in technology, it is key to gather a
more in depth and analytical study of the methodologies involved in firewall systems.Observing
the current direction of firewall development can provide an idea of the improvements that can
be made to keep up with an ever expanding technological society; especially as more and more
people are being exposed, uneducated, to the dangers of the internet. Aim: By taking a look at
the average household or business building, it is realised that a common aspect of their basic
structure is the physical security mechanisms in place. These are in place to protect the privacy
and integrity of what the owner possesses within. In terms of a network, this concept of
preventing unauthorised access of one s property is just as valid. However, in the situation of a
network, a firewall is used as this prevention security system. The idea is simple; a user may have
stored, on their network, a certain amount of private data that is personal to them or their business.
Thus, a firewall is put in place in order to prevent anything or anyone that does not have
authorisation from accessing any of this data. If an unknown and potentially dangerous individual
were to try to get into a building complex, the physical security appliances would react and prevent
this from happening. A firewall works the same way; however it deals with potentially harmful
packets entering the network. These packets are

The Effects Of Fear On Hiv And Hiv
Fear plays a big role in the way society treats or views patients who have been diagnosed as HIV
positive. Due to the lack of general knowledge regarding the illness and how it is transmitted, they
are led to believe a HIV positive person is extremely contagious, and can go on to infect anyone
within the general vicinity. As we now know, it has become apparent that HIV can only be
transmitted through certain activities that involve fluid transfer between an infected patient and
someone who is HIV negative. These activities include sexual intercourse, being born to an infected

All other forms of transmission are at such low risk they are negligible, but still possible. [2]
Unfortunately, due to the nature of the possible methods of transmission, it has become easy for
society to associate this illness with shameful or immoral behaviours, such as homosexuality,
drug use and sex work. It is because of this behaviour associated with the illness that a lot of
stigma and discrimination arise, and due to the reluctance to talk about the issue, the fear of the
disease because of the misconceptions around the topic remains a big issue that if not resolved
will continue to harm all patients afflicted with this illness. The consequences of this disease on
HIV+ patients is widespread and does not only affect the persons health but consequently also
affects almost all other aspects of their lives, such as: their income, marriage/ family life,
healthcare, their position in legal situations, reputation and also goes on to cause depression and
anxiety as they lose hope and feel less worth due to the stigma they face. There are many sources of
the aforementioned stigma that go on to directly affect a patient in the above mentioned areas of
their lives. To begin with, HIV+ patients are subject to a lot of discrimination from the government
as in many cases (in 60% of countries) there are various laws and policies that hinder patients

Death Of Romeo And Juliet Essay
The tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, is the tale of two desperate lovers, at
antithetical ends of a violent feud, whose love affair meets a tragic end. But to what extent are
these two lovers responsible for their own downfall or are they merely victims of harsh fate?
Whilst Romeo and Juliet play a crucial role in the generation of their own demise, there are also a
variety of external features that equally influence the hapless fate of the two star cross d lovers.
One of the most consequential of the external influences that prompted the demise of the fervent
love affair is the violent feud between the lovers families. Romeo and Juliet were born into

A connection between the haste of the marriage of Romeo and Juliet can be linked back to the
contractual marriage of Juliet to Paris as arranged by her parents and the deaths of both Tybalt and
Mercutio. Juliet s impending marriage to Paris forces the lovers to rush into vows of their own,
basing their decision solely on their desires and without heed or consideration of the consequences.
Similarly, the deaths of both Tybalt and Mercutio compels the pair to once again act in haste. Juliet
is caught between her love of Romeo and grievance over Tybalt s death at the hands of her lover,
whilst Romeo is banished from Verona. Both these external features rush the lovers into somewhat
dangerous and irrational decisions, with the urgency of their affair contributing to the lack of
consideration of the peril they could face. The fraught circumstances further build on the already
intense emotions of the lovers, denying them the privilege of a normal relationship and pointing to
a disaster for the impassioned pair. Therefore, the actions of Juliet s parents and the deaths of both
Tybalt and Mercutio, inflames the lovers emotions and causes them to rush their relationship. This
pressures them into making irrational and perilous decsions and leads them to a poignant

The muscles of the head and neck perform numerous critical assignments, including development of

The muscles of the face are remarkable among gatherings of muscles in the body. While most

The passenger pigeon was an average bird with a big population. This bird served as the cheapest

many negative environmental implications if we release the Passenger

The Impact Of Media On Society Today
According to Dictionary.com, media is defined as means of communication that reach and influence
society or people widely.
For instance, radios, televisions, newspapers, and magazines are forms of media. The influence the
media has around the globe is profound, therefore, in this essay, I am going to discuss the impact
that media has on the society today.
Although social media can connect all people in the world instantly, the negative effects have a
great impact on the society because it decreases the desire for actual communication.
First and foremost, media has an impact on Change in Identity.
In Miss Representation video, it is said that 53% of 13 year old girls are unhappy with their
bodies. And that number increases by 75% at 17 years old. And 65% in women and girls with
anorexia
This is very true because in teen magazines and beauty pageant shows, women are portrayed as
skinny .
This image by the media today is unrealistic and even a very dangerous standard of feminine beauty.
The idea by media that thinness is idealized and expected for women to be considered attractive .
Images in televisions, advertisements, and music usually portray women as ideal woman as tall,
white, blonde, and thin. Women and girls with weight problems like obesity, are going to feel less
worthy and ashamed of their physical appearances.
This causes them to be depressed which can lead to suicidal attempts because they learn to accept
that the society only wants skinny

Cost Estimating
Project managers must take cost estimates seriously if they want to complete software projects
within budget constraints. After developing a good resource requirements list, project managers
and their software development teams must develop several estimates of the costs for these
resources. There are several different tools and techniques available for accomplishing good cost
estimation. Software development project managers should prepare several types of cost estimates
for most projects. Three basic types of estimates include a rough order of magnitude or ROM, a
budgetary estimate, and a definitive estimate. A rough order of magnitude estimate provides an
estimate of what a project will cost. A rough order of magnitude estimate... Show more content on

A large percentage of the total software development project costs are often labor costs. Many
organizations estimate the number of people or hours they need by department or skill over the life
cycle of a software development project. Developing a good cost estimate is difficult. There are
several tools and techniques available to assist in creating them. Four of the commonly used tools
and techniques are analogous cost estimating, bottom up estimating, parametric modeling, and
using computerized tools. Analogous estimates are sometimes referred to as top down estimates.
Analogous estimates use the actual cost of a previous, similar software development project as the
basis for estimating the cost of the current software development project. This technique requires a
fair amount of expert judgment and is less costly than the other methods. However, this method is
also less accurate. Analogous estimates are most reliable when previous software development
projects are similar in fact, not just in appearance. Groups preparing cost estimates must have the
necessary expertise to determine whether certain parts of the software development project will be
more or less expensive than analogous projects. If the software development project to be estimated
involves a new programming language, or working with a new type of computer hardware or
network, the analogous estimate technique may result in too low of an estimate. Bottom up

What Is Ethics in Business
What is Ethics in Business?
In general, personal ethics can be described as the moral guidelines each of us uses in our daily
lives. It is these guidelines which govern how we behave including how we speak and act
towards others in our everyday interactions no matter if they are face to face, by way of telephone
or in writing. Much the same can be said for ethics in business. Business ethics are the moral
philosophies and written rules of conduct which govern how the business treats not only its own
employees but also how the business handles its daily dealings in everything ranging from
bookkeeping and accounting to advertising and customer relations. Our text for this class, Marketing
, The Core describes ethics as the moral principles and values that govern the actions and decisions
of an individual or group (pg.69), and refers to ethical business practices many times throughout the
book.
Business ethics rely on the moral values of both individuals and groups of individuals since in
many cases, decisions which can affect the business can be, and are made by both. Company
officers, managers, management teams, supervisors and employees alike all routinely make
decisions on a daily basis, which can have a profound effect on many facets of a company
including overall production, employee morale and even internal or public image. Typically a
company will establish a moral identity over a period of time, and employees that come and go
from the business over its lifetime are

Abraham s Theory Of Behaviorism
Abraham Harold Maslow was born on April 1, 1908 in Brooklyn, New York. He was the first
born to his parents, Samuel and Rose Maslow. He was a lonely and unhappy Jewish boy who
spent most of his time in the library and among books as a means of comfort and refuge.
However, in 1925 at the age of 17 he enrolled at the City College of New York. In 1926, he
registered for evening classes at the Brooklyn Law School, then transferred to Cornell University in
Ithaca, New York in 1927. In 1928, he transferred to the University of Wisconsin and earned his
Bachelor, Maters and Doctorate within the years 1930 1934. Shortly after Maslow married his
longtime sweetheart and first cousin Bertha Goodman, he had discovered J.B. Watson and his
theories on behaviorism which sparked an interest in him. However, the birth of his two daughters
Anna and Ellen made him forget behaviorism. After working for 18 months at the Columbia
University he met with well known learning theorist Edward Thorndike who sparked an interest in
him that he decided to research on the relationship between dominance and sexuality in humans.
During the period 1937 1951, Abraham taught at Brooklyn College and there continued with his
research on human sexuality. He continued seeking to understand humans, more so, Max
Wertheimer and Ruth Benedick, who had great influence on him. These influential assisted him in
formulating an interest in self actualizing people. In 1951 Abraham moved to Brandeis University
and served as

Henry David Thoreau And Individualism
A significant philosopher of the pre Civil War era of the United States, Henry David Thoreau
appeared to be above the standard with his philosophically driven life style. He wrote detailed
accounts of his life in his book titled Walden, in which he expressed his desire to escape the
confining pressures of humansociety. His second chapter lauded the concepts of individualismand
self sufficiency, yet he never took into account the potential harm of his mentality, for it could
hurt individuals as well as communities, and modern life simply cannot support his ideals. To
begin, the main points of Thoreau s essay must be analysed. Thoreau began by advocating a life
that is simple and slow. This is summarized by the phrase from his book, Simplicity, simplicity,
simplicity! I say, let your affairs be two or three, and not a hundred or a thousand. A philosophy
such as this may be appealing, especially when one is overwhelmed by the problems presented by
society. However, maintaining this simplicity in a community context requires ignorance of the
needs and wants of other people. Many of society s complicated demands, such as tax payment and
jury duty, are necessary for the betterment of other citizen s lives. In his essay, Thoreau dismissed
the importance of community problems by claiming that they were a complete illusion, adding,
Men say that a stitch in time saves nine, and so they take a thousands stitches today to save nine
tomorrow. As for work, we haven t any of any

Sexual Exploitation And Assault Of A Minor
The sexual exploitation or assault of a minor is the definition of childhood sexual abuse (Burns,
Dunn, Brady, Starr Blosser, 2013). The abuse may involve fondling, oral genital, genital or anal
contact with a child who developmentally unable to give consent. The incidence of childhood
sexual abuse in the United States is approximately 18% of girls and 9 % of boys (Bechtel
Bennett, 2016). As the pediatric primary care provider, the Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP)
may become involved with a pediatric patient who has experienced sexual abuse or exploitation.
The diagnosis of sexual abuse in children has substantial implications legally, communally and
emotionally for the child, the parents and the clinician. Therefore, the FNP must consider the
medical legal implication of the interview with the patient, the parents as well as the history and
physical exam of the child. Careful documentation of all findings from the visit is vital to the
advocacy of the patient (Burns, et al, 2013). Concerns of abuse regarding the pediatric patient
may be elicited from communication with the child or the parent. The FNP may also notice
physical or laboratory findings that indicate sexual activity in a pediatric patient. As the FNP
conducts both well and sick child exams, obtaining the history and physical may reveal both
physical and behavioral indicators of abuse. However, 90% of physical exams of these children do
not reveal physical trauma due to passage of time or type of abuse

Advantages Of Open Lunch
When an argument is in the happening, it is always important to listen to, and understand both
sides to the story. Such as how seniors, or even students in high school would like to have open
lunch instead of having to stay in school during lunch hours. The administration is not allowing this
to happen, for they believe they cannot trust the students enough. The reason they think they cannot
trust the students is because of students breaking their trust in different matters. This has caused
other students the inability to be given a chance at gaining a teacher, or even the administrations
trust. But if the administration would look at this from the student s point of view, they could
possibly see why students are upset by not having an open lunch hour. The administration seems to
think that all students will act the same if given the privilege of an open lunch hour. But this is
because they aren t looking at this from a student s point of view. Many students are well behaved
in school, and deserve trust from teachers and such. If those students aren t allowed an open lunch
hour, because of some irresponsible student actions, then you could see why that could be irritating
to the well behaved students. Also if the schools lunch isn t something that the student wants to eat
that day, the student should be able to go out and eat, because lunch is a very important meal. I
know that if I don t eat a good breakfast, and I come to school I can t really concentrate on working

Cineworld Mergers
Abstract A merger is defined as the act of uniting two companies existing separately into one new
company. Mergers re most common among companies that wish to increase their market share,
expand their reach, or even tap into new market segments. This report focuses on the merger that
took place between Cineworld Group and City Screen Limited. The report includes an investigation
that is carried out by the competition commission aimed at determining whether the merger
situation created by the two parties qualified to be relevant or not. It also seeks to investigate the
effects of the transaction on the competition in the market. Introduction Cineworld Group plc

Instead, the services offered by both parties tend to overlap. The competition commission also
carried out an investigation on the effects the merger had on competition. According to the
commission, in areas where both parties had cinemas, the elimination of one competitor would give
room to increase prices or reduction in the quality of service. Expansion plans by any individual
party would also be affected s a result of the current common ownership of both the business and the
competitor. Also, the merger gave the newly formed company the power to offer programming
services, which it could use to distort the completion. The competition commission also carried out
further investigation so as to determine any evidence that would relate to the above theories. The
commission focused on local areas in the country where both parties had cinemas. Analytical tools
were used to determine the competition that existed between the two parties before the merger, and
also, the competition from other film exhibition service providers. The commission also aimed at
finding out whether the timely entry of a new competitor would have any effect on the market.
Findings showed that the merger between Cineworld and City Screen would result in a substantial
lessening of competition (SLC) in the

Tradition: To emphasize on the influence of the Aztecs traditions in to Mexican culture is the
gender roles. In the book, Mexico an illustrated History it explains, Men were expected to be
unflinching in the face of danger, and able to withstand pain. Women were expected to be
modest and unassertive, their world restricted to the household. Children were cherished, but
taught to respect discipline and the authority of elders. The Mexican culture still follows these
traditions. Just like the Aztecs, in the Mexican culture men were raise to be machos. Men are
usually the head of the family and were expect to go in to the world and provide for his family.
Modern day women are still changing and everyday there is more opportunities for women, but
even with the new opportunities, some women still decide to take the traditional route; they get
married and decide to take the role of a housewife. Modern day children are still raise with the
same values, they are taught to respect their parents and the elderly. Just like the Aztecs, Mexicans
take their traditions very seriously. Mexicans also take the admiration of sports from the Aztecs.
The Aztec had their own version of football called Tlachi which was later updated to soccer. Aztecs
did not have a religion. Their religion was based in pleasing their god and getting rewards in return
for this. The Aztec thought that in order for the universe to run smooth with

The Satanic Verses Analysis
In The Satanic Verses, numerous symbols illustrate how human nature is the source of the evil.
Furthermore, the symbolic significance that pertains to the main character also shows how all
individuals have both good and bad qualities. A repeating motif in the book is the reference to the
play Othello . Skapearses famous play follows the life of the Moor Othelloafter is marriage to
Desdemona. Iago, a loyal friend of Othello, was furious that the Moor overlooked him for a
promotion, sparking his lust for revenge. Iago devised a plan to persuade the King that his had
been having an affair with his trusted friend Cassio. Iago s actions resulted in the Moor killing
Desdemona. After learning the truth, Othello committed suicide. The references to the play
foreshadow the ending of the novelbut also gives further explanations to the actions of Gibreel.
The first mentions of Othello only occurred to criticize Shakespeare because he couldn t spell
(256). The primary reference occurs when Gibreel wondered about the creation of evil, why it
grows, how it takes unilateral possession of a many sided human soul. Or, let s say: the enigma
of Iago (439). Gibreel continues by denying his allegations saying he s, no match for the moor
(439). Gibreel turns out to me more naive than the moor because the events that occur in Othello
are mirrored in the novel. Gibreel assumes the role of Othello, Saladin Iago, and Gibreel s love
interest Allie Cone, Desdemona. Gibreel inherited the

The Mexican-American Culture
The culture of the Mexican people has been resilient in Southern California. The Mexican culture is
a culture of pride, courage, and humbleness that is exhibited at LA Plaza De Cultura Y Artes. This
resilient culture was exhibited during the tumultuous times of the early 20th century throughout
Southern California. The early 20th century specifically the twenty s through the forties was a
dangerous period as many Mexican Americans experienced levels of racial discrimination that went
against their rights of being American citizens. Incidents range from forced cultural assimilation,
beating, and lynchings, to mass illegal deportations. Still, after all these injustices Mexican
Americans responded by standing up and not letting racism and fear... Show more content on

For example, in 1942 after the death of a young male Latino in Los Angeles, a historical trial
occurred that denied the right of a fair trial for numerous Mexican Americans. According to The
Sleepy Lagoon Murder Case: Race Discrimination and Mexican American Rights, The Sleepy
Lagoon Murder case was where seventeen young Mexican origin men and boys were unfairly
convicted for the murder of another Mexican American man on the eastside of Los Angeles
(Bernstein, 126). The writer of the book Mark Weitz argues in this review, The defendants were
denied a fair trial and convicted without adequate evidence. And that a pervasive fear of
immigrant outsiders, patriotic wartime fervor, and the media helped impede justice. (Bernstein,
126). Shortly, after this incident occurred another incident of anti Mexican sentiment and
wartime fervor. This incident is known as the Zoot Suit Riots. In 1943, many servicemen were
stationed in Mexican American neighborhoods in Los Angeles. Some these servicemen did not
like the attire that some of these Mexican Americans were wearing. They were dressed in a Zoot
Suit, which as the Smithsonian, states were seen as, unpatriotic to servicemen because of the
flashy appearance (Gregory, 13). They were also seen as unpatriotic also because war rations
had been in effect for items such as fabric and these suits were huge and made of all fabric. So, in
1943 over a series of days, thousands of servicemen rioted and attacked any young Latino male they
encountered. After the riots were over many white press outlets celebrated the attacks they saw as
justified and the Los Angeles city council passed an ordinance to make wearing Zoot Suits illegal.
A racial intolerance sentiment caused many Mexican Americans to become afraid, but they never
let fear from limiting them. Over the next two

The responsibility administering the honor code was delegated to the cadets. This was known as
the cadet honor board. The honor board conducted investigations on cadets who were reported to
have violated the honor code. The honor board would decide on a person s guilt or incense by a

had his concerns as to how the honor board functioned. He believed that giving student s
authority to investigate and determine the guilt or innocence of fellow cadets was not in the
academy s best interest. General Berry viewed the current system was flawed and time

He felt that in order to preserve the academy s integrity. General Berry believed the Honor board
should be eliminated from the process. The challenge for General Berry was to overcome the

The Discipline Of Environmental History
Found within various articles and books, the discipline of environmental history permeates the
study of nature and humans. By combining a multitude of studies and methodologies, authors
explore the aspects of the environment and nature along with human interaction to understand how
they commingle, affecting one another. In the following four books and one article, scholars from
varying backgrounds approach environmental historyin an assortment of methods in order to prove
their thesis. Their methodologies shape their thought process and lead to the structure of these
books. Further investigation into this process reveals the authors intentions, enabling readers to
understand how methodology fuels the writing process, creating an argument, and producing
valuable work.
A strong cooperation lies at the heart of Lisa M. Brady s article entitled, Has Environmental
History Lost Its Way? and sets the tone for many of the following books. She reveals that in order
to study environmental history training in the field is not a requirement. Rather, a conglomeration
of backgrounds can provide insight into the study. Additionally, her article takes a materialistic
approach, suggesting that straying too far from this idea will lead to the breakdown of this study.
While this seems to be the foundation of her article, her ultimate goal is a juxtaposition between the
previous approach and the idea that expanding the field is vital in creating a contemporary
narrative. By

  • 2. Ecocriticism In Silent Spring As a criticism of the trend, Ecological criticism originated from the United States. The publication of Silent Spring written by Rachel Carson symbolizes the beginning of the American ecological movement. Just as Uncle Tom s Cabin written by Harriet Beecher Stowe started Civil War, Silent Spring is the triggers of American environmental protection movement. Since then, ecocriticism gradually emerged as the times demand. This concept can be traced back to the 1970s when Joseph Meek came up with the term literary ecology in his essay entitled The Comedy of Survival: Studies in Literary Ecology in 1974, advocating that literary criticism should explore the relationship between humans and other species, and carefully examine and explore the literature s impact on human s behaviors and ... Next stage of ecocriticism concentrated on the promotion of nature writing literature that has been neglected for a long time, explore and analyze the history, development, achievement and writing styles of the former nature writing works. While the third stage of ecocriticism, the scholars try to establish the new concept of ecological poetics in the hope of enhancing the ecological theories construction through the concept of ecological system. Numerous ecological theories have been founded during the three stages, such as Albert Schweitzer s ethic of reverence for life, Leopold s ecological holism, Paul W.Taylor s biocentrism, Holmes Rolston s the value of nature, Tom Regan s animal rights, Peter Singer s animal liberation and so on. This dissertation just attempts to interpret the ecological thoughts in Toms River by using some of the ecocriticism theories to reveal the truth about environmental pollution and the attitude and actions people should take when dealing with environmental ... • 3. Contents Of The Dead Man s Pocket The working class can relate to the theme of the short story Contents of the Dead Man s Pocket, by Jack Finney. More often than not, people strive to get to the top of their profession, but at what cost? The majority of people spend countless hours of their life working to provide for themselves and their loved ones. The irony of working all these hours to provide for your loved ones is that you will not see them nearly as much as desired because of work. In my opinion, the above passage is important to the story because Tom is now inside lying on the floor as a new man who knows what is important in life. Tom works for Wholesale Groceries and has been spending most of his free time off of work doing research on grocery store displays. The only copy of his research flies out of the window of his tenth story apartment due to a draft. In this moment, readers discover how obsessed Tom really is with work: He knew he was going out there in the darkness, after the yellow sheet fifteen feet beyond his reach (page 4). At this point in time, Tom is willing to risk everything, including his life, to ensure that he can elevate above his coworkers. This perilous behavior is the complete opposite from the Tom we read about in the above passage from the end of the story. Tom transitions from chasing a paper out on a ledge ten stories up, to laughing at the same paper flying back out of the window. Tom undergoes character growth throughout the story, but it is the most ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Awakening Feminist Analysis The influence of culture within society may lead to detrimental outcomes. Oppression is not the intention of society, though through harsh political and social standards one will feel compelled to make brash decisions. Kate Chopin, author of The Awakening, provides feminist criticism of traditional motherhood, marriage, and conformity. EdnaPontellier, the female protagonist within the novel, grows to desire independence and control over her life. Throughout the story, Edna epitomizes a feminist attitude by defying the regressive standards of the Creole culture, as exemplified through Chopin s use of literary elements including symbol, setting, and character development. Edna gradually sheds her fictitious self in attempt to become an... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A bird with a broken wing was beating the air above, reeling, fluttering, circling, disabled down, down to the water (115). Chopin uses the birds to symbolize Edna, as her wings were not strong enough to support her. The expectations of society compelled Edna to take her own life. A life without individuality or authenticity was one Edna decided was not worth living. Edna s peers view her actions as thoughtless and childish because she frequently makes impulsive decisions and later regrets them. As such, Edna often shares the symbolic nature of a child. Edna s behavior after an argument with LГ©once exemplifies her thoughtlessness. She stopped, taking off her wedding ring, and flung it upon the carpet (52). Edna is unhappy with her marriage because she never loved Leonce in the first place. Unwed women held lesser merit and stability than married women did. Edna ultimately wed Leonce both to initially abide by society s expectations and to upset her father. Edna, now desiring another man, despises the Catholic restriction to annul. Later, when Edna confides in Adele, she admits, I would give up the unessential; I would give my money, I would give my life for my children; but I wouldn t give myself (47). Not only does Edna consider her life to be inessential due to her social standing, she would not sacrifice the more important lively aspects because she herself still feels childish greed. Edna s struggle for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Cove Dolphins Approximately 20,000 dolphins are killed legally every year and thousands more are sold inhumanely in Taiji, Japan. The majority of these dolphins are sold to marine parks and aquariums around the world. Louie Psihoyos and Ric O Barry s eye opening documentary The Cove raises awareness about the gruesome killings of dolphins in Japan. Ironically Ric O Barry feels that he initiated this problem, as he was one of the first dolphintrainers/capturers in the 1960 s for the show Flipper. After witnessing the star, Flipper the Bottlenose Dolphin commit suicide in his arms, he became a marine activist, which led to the production of this documentary to stop the problem he created. Louie and Rick expose the plight of the dolphin, the potential... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The universal image of the dolphin portrays the illusion that dolphins are always happy because they consistently appear to be smiling. This, however, is nature s greatest deception as it is simply the shape of their mouth. Throughout the film the juxtaposition of the beauty of nature is harshly contrasted with the ugliness of the underlying secrets of the industry in Japan and around the world. The fishing industry is largest in Japan therefore that is where this movie was filmed. The captive industry has become a lucrative billion dollar worldwide trade, with all money made from the exploitation, imprisonment and lifelong suffering of these living beings. A live dolphin captured for a marine mammal park can be valued up to $200,000. The most shocking fact is that this is legal. The International Whaling Commission outlawed commercial whaling in 1986, but dolphin hunts remain legal. The film s impact was largely due to the emotional ties between O Barry and dolphins. Although the filmmakers are extremely biased, his convincing pleads for our help are strategically made at the most emotional moments. He believes that bottlenose dolphins are being hunted the most The fishermen are searching for bottlenose dolphins like flipper . Luckily this type of dolphin is not yet endangered but this ... • 6. Deaf Persuasive Speech Take a second, close your eyes, and imagine silence. Nothing is going on around you; you can t even hear a pin drop. Not a sound to be heard for miles. You open your eyes expecting the world to come to life, and everything to breath wavelengths into your ears, but instead, you are met with an ocean of nothingness. People hustle about you, yelling at you to move out of their way, but still... nothing. This is the reality of a deaf person s world. Every day they wake up to this, and nothing more. When out in public, they must learn to communicate, to fend for themselves while the hearing go on with their lives as normal. We don t even realize how blessed we are as a hearing person, until it s gone. One way to dissolve this issue is by offering... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although it is possible for deaf children to attend public schools and succeed, research suggests that it is best for them to have their own environment, says Meagan McDonough. It is already hard enough for a hearing student to find his/her place in the classroom, but when you add being deaf to the list, a major challenge presents itself. This deaf student must work extra hard to keep up and be able to read the lips of his/her teachers and fellow peers, and learn to communicate. Even though accommodations are made and sometimes interpreters are given, it is hard for the student to feel welcome. If this student were to attend a deaf school, he/she would not have to work so hard and would find it much easier to communicate and socialize both of which are major focuses in a high school student s life. In Meagan McDonough s article Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children in Public Schools , she states that public schools might not be best for deaf students, but if they start out in a deaf school and eventually integrate into a hearing school, they will be better off and be able to keep up. I agree with her in that it is good for a child to at least start his /her education in a deaf school so that the base of their foundation is laid by something they can understand. If later they feel comfortable trying out a public school, they may do so and will find it easier to be and feel included. However, if ASL was to be offered in all public schools and colleges, it would give hearing students the chance to be able to communicate and be more comfortable with deaf ... • 10. Animal Rights At Factory Farms Madison Bowdish Dr. Brian Onishi PHIL 229 15 Dec 2016 Animal Rights in Factory Farms The idea that industrial farming is bad for the environment is well known, but what people do not think about is horrible practice of factory farms within industrial farming. Factory farms are inhumane and not only because the animal is being slaughtered, but because of the way the animals are treated before the are killed. A person would think that if they were to be innocently killed that they would want to be treated with respect and dignity before they die. In this paper, I will argue that animals have rights through a utilitarian view and that they should not be treated in an inhumane way. The framework I plan to discuss is Peter Singer s utilitarian view on animal rights. A general idea of what utilitarianismis can be described as the need for the many outweigh the needs of a few, or majority rule when it comes to happiness. Singer s criteria for how a being gets rights is based on the ability to feel pleasure or pain. With this criteria it allows people who are mentally handicapped, the senile, and babies to have rights (Hozien). Most would agree that it would be cruel to not give these people rights, so Singer argues that since animals can feel pain and pleasure they also have rights. Although he believes that they should be treated equal he does admit that there is a range or difference of pain. He equates this to racism or in this case speciesism. For instance he states that ... • 11. The Selma-Montgomery March Essay The Selma Montgomery March The Civil Rights Movement began in order to bring equal rights and equal voting rights to black citizens of the US. This was accomplished through persistent demonstrations, one of these being the Selma Montgomery March. This march, lead by Martin Luther King Jr., targeted at the disenfranchisement of negroes in Alabama due to the literacy tests. Tension from the governor and state troopers of Alabama led the state, and the whole nation, to be caught in the violent chaos caused by protests and riots by marchers. However, this did not prevent the March from Selma to Montgomery to accomplish its goals abolishing the literacy tests and allowing black citizens the right to vote. At ... This malevolent act sent the entire nation in an uproar, sparking riots in major US cites and even in Toronto. The protests and riots gained so much popular support as to gain the attention of President Lyndon B. Johnson, who declared that he deplored the brutality. King was also determined to march from Selma to Montgomery in order to present the governor with the proposal for voting rights and to continue fighting the oppression ( Central Point 24). March 16 saw a demonstration in Montgomery, Alabamain which 580 demonstrators planned to march from the Jackson Street Baptist Church to the Montgomery County Courthouse (Reed 26). These protestors included a large number of northern college students. They met a police line a few blocks from the Courthouse and were forbidden from proceeding because they did not have a parade permit (Reed 26). Across the street came 40 or so students who planned on joining the group en route to the Courthouse. Eventually a few of the demonstrators dared to cross the street, led by James Forman who had organized the march. When it seemed the whole group would cross, police took action, with mounted officers and volunteers arriving at 1:12 pm. Riding into the small group of protestors, they forced most to withdraw, but a few stood fast around a utility pole where horsemen began to beat them. A posseman ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Foreshadowing In Bible All things considered, God always had in mind one plan for salvation. Since, the promise made to Adam and Eve in Genesis 3:15 were He says, And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel the devil had tried to deceive us with the biggest lie, that there are many ways to come to God. As a result, most religions view God as a being that modifies according to peoples standards, peoples view point, peoples believe, and their own interpretation of the Bible. However, that is not how God runs the universe. In fact, the main reason for God to establish the temple among the Jews was in order to serve as a prefiguring of the coming of the perfect lamb Jesus... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another key point, is that every sacrifice ceremony was providing just a temporary covering of once sin, and could never take it away forever. On the other hand, the foreshadowing of the perfect Lamb, would come to remove sin forever. That is what the temple represented, that there is one way to heaven, the lamb slain, Jesus Christ. Now, the time has come to have faith in Jesus Christ for salvation of our souls. The temple is no longer needed. In effect, no longer we need to wait for the foreshadow of Jesus Christ, we no longer need to slain a sheep to cover our sins, we no longer need to seek God on an altar, as he dwells within us through the Holy Spirit. God has never given us a spirit of fear, rather a spirit of faith in Jesus Christ. Under those circumstances, when Jesus declared, I am the way, is the reason why Jews hated Him. As a result, they were intolerance with Him and Christians, until this day. The Bible speaks of Jesus Christ becoming the stumbling rock for the Jews by not accepting his vicarious death. In fact, the incredible thing about Jesus is that He is the way, the truth and the life no one comes to the father but through ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

However, the results of the recent presidential election have demonstrated a major disparity in the equality of that opportunity. Donald Trump, with almost no political qualifications, beat out Hillary Clinton, a highly qualified individual, for the presidency. In addition, many scandals were attached to the Trump campaign, mainly his disparaging comments against women. The success of his campaign, after all the scandals, can be attributed to sexism in the general American population. Ingrained sexism in American society constituted a major reason as to why Hillary Clinton lost the presidential election. Poems are the most simplistic way to express one s feelings and beliefs through writing. Poets mostly try express love, loss, death, some may speak from their own experience or for the sake of their characters who tend to be quite sophisticated. They tend to write about these 3 topics commonly due to the fact that practically everyone has experienced this sort of emotion. Poetry has existed since man could write, to Aristotle, to Victorian times and now to the present day where it is internationally used. Poems are now used to promote movements for the benefit of the world, varying from poverty to the sustainability of the environment; of which most have been successful due to poetry being able to connect with the reader, even if they are not in the same situation. However they are still able to feel what their character is feeling and what state of mind they are in. Poems also tend to be short so that the reader does not loose concentration nor loose the power of the poem, but instead the poet chooses to write to a short limithowever they choose their words carefully so that the reader will be intrigued and contemplated the whole way through the poem however leave the poembeing fascinated. Machiavelli s Views On Nature Of Good Rule Essay Both Locke and Machiavelli share the philosophy of improving the establishment but their point of views regarding the nature of good rule varies. Machiavelli presents a rather extreme notion of the Prince disregarding individual rights for the benefit of the principality. He justifies these violations of rights, by implementing that it is necessary in order to maintain order and power. Machiavelli s idea of the nature of good rule benefited the society of that specific time period through the means of letting human nature take rule of the principality. Locke on the other hand, argues that people need absolute control over the establishment in order to maintain order and equality. This argument is derived from the concept of the good rule of nature. In a conversation between both men, Locke would achieve the greater argument when it comes the nature of good rule but does not do so without certain restraints. These restraints will be pointed out by Machiavelli and a counter argument will be presented by Locke, which justifies his theories and strengthens his argument regarding the nature of good rule. Machiavelli begins his argument, by justifying an authoritarian governing system by the means of hereditary rule. He believes that people always comply with The Princes rule because they act on love. Machiavelli explains this when he states that, The hereditary prince has less cause and less necessity to offend, hence it happens that he will be more loved (The prince, 3). For ... • 35. Death Of Romeo And Juliet Essay The tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, is the tale of two desperate lovers, at antithetical ends of a violent feud, whose love affair meets a tragic end. But to what extent are these two lovers responsible for their own downfall or are they merely victims of harsh fate? Whilst Romeo and Juliet play a crucial role in the generation of their own demise, there are also a variety of external features that equally influence the hapless fate of the two star cross d lovers. One of the most consequential of the external influences that prompted the demise of the fervent love affair is the violent feud between the lovers families. Romeo and Juliet were born into opposing sides of the violent vendetta and fell profoundly in love ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A connection between the haste of the marriage of Romeo and Juliet can be linked back to the contractual marriage of Juliet to Paris as arranged by her parents and the deaths of both Tybalt and Mercutio. Juliet s impending marriage to Paris forces the lovers to rush into vows of their own, basing their decision solely on their desires and without heed or consideration of the consequences. Similarly, the deaths of both Tybalt and Mercutio compels the pair to once again act in haste. Juliet is caught between her love of Romeo and grievance over Tybalt s death at the hands of her lover, whilst Romeo is banished from Verona. Both these external features rush the lovers into somewhat dangerous and irrational decisions, with the urgency of their affair contributing to the lack of consideration of the peril they could face. The fraught circumstances further build on the already intense emotions of the lovers, denying them the privilege of a normal relationship and pointing to a disaster for the impassioned pair. Therefore, the actions of Juliet s parents and the deaths of both Tybalt and Mercutio, inflames the lovers emotions and causes them to rush their relationship. This pressures them into making irrational and perilous decsions and leads them to a poignant ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Four of the commonly used tools and techniques are analogous cost estimating, bottom up estimating, parametric modeling, and using computerized tools. Analogous estimates are sometimes referred to as top down estimates. Analogous estimates use the actual cost of a previous, similar software development project as the basis for estimating the cost of the current software development project. This technique requires a fair amount of expert judgment and is less costly than the other methods. However, this method is also less accurate. It is these guidelines which govern how we behave including how we speak and act towards others in our everyday interactions no matter if they are face to face, by way of telephone or in writing. Much the same can be said for ethics in business. Business ethics are the moral philosophies and written rules of conduct which govern how the business treats not only its own employees but also how the business handles its daily dealings in everything ranging from bookkeeping and accounting to advertising and customer relations. Our text for this class, Marketing , The Core describes ethics as the moral principles and values that govern the actions and decisions of an individual or group (pg.69), and refers to ethical business practices many times throughout the book. Henry David Thoreau And Individualism A significant philosopher of the pre Civil War era of the United States, Henry David Thoreau appeared to be above the standard with his philosophically driven life style. He wrote detailed accounts of his life in his book titled Walden, in which he expressed his desire to escape the confining pressures of humansociety. His second chapter lauded the concepts of individualismand self sufficiency, yet he never took into account the potential harm of his mentality, for it could hurt individuals as well as communities, and modern life simply cannot support his ideals. To begin, the main points of Thoreau s essay must be analysed. Thoreau began by advocating a life that is simple and slow. This is summarized by the phrase from his book, Simplicity, simplicity, simplicity! I say, let your affairs be two or three, and not a hundred or a thousand. A philosophy such as this may be appealing, especially when one is overwhelmed by the problems presented by society. However, maintaining this simplicity in a community context requires ignorance of the needs and wants of other people. Many of society s complicated demands, such as tax payment and jury duty, are necessary for the betterment of other citizen s lives. Such as how seniors, or even students in high school would like to have open lunch instead of having to stay in school during lunch hours. The reason they think they cannot trust the students is because of students breaking their trust in different matters.
