The Negative Aspects Of Social Media
A picture is worth their pride. A picture is worth their self esteem. A picture is worth their dignity.
Social media networking has become a large part of today s society. Media applications such as
Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat are rising in popularity, not only amongst teens, but adults
as well. According to Pew Research Center, in 2015, 65% of American adults now use social
networking sites up from 7% back in 2005 (Perrin). Bringing people from all over the world together,
social media sites have made it easier for people to communicate and interact on all different levels.
Controversy still arises among the negative aspects of social media apps and how its usage affects
people, particularly young adolescents. Sociological and psychological literature on the phenomenon
of media effects has shown that exposure to media depictions of the thin ideal can have damaging
effects for women (Groesz, et al 1 16). The ease of access to thousands of pictures that have been
photoshopped, edited and altered, tweets and Facebook posts makes it hard for young adolescents to
distinguish reality from fiction. They seek validation and want to be liked, so they don t have to go
further than the tip of their fingers to get this as they scroll the pages of Instagram and Facebook. In a
Huffington Post article, by Jill P. Weber, she stated, Girls turn to these sites to figure out who they are,
what they should look like, who they should try to be and how they can make themselves

Rural Development in India
Rural Development In India
India has been a welfare state ever since her Independence and the primary objective of all
governmental endeavors has been the welfare of its millions. Planning has been one of the pillars of
the Indian policy since independence and the country s strength is derived from the achievement of
planning. The policies and programmes have been designed with the aim of alleviation of rural
poverty which has been one of the primary objectives of planned development in India. It was realized
that a sustainable strategy of poverty alleviation has to be based on increasing the productive
employment opportunities in the process of growth itself. Elimination of poverty, ignorance, diseases

efforts in these sectors the Government had launched the Pradhan Mantri Gramdoya Yojana (PMGY)
and the ministry of rural development was entrusted with the responsibility of implementing drinking
water, housing and rural roads component of PMGY During the Ninth Plan period, several anti
poverty Programmes have been restructured to enhance the efficiency of the Programmes for
providing increased benefits to the rural poor. Self Employment Programmes have been revamped by
merging the Integrated Rural Development Programme (IRDP), the Development of Women and
Children in Rural Areas (DWCRA), the Supply of Improved Tool Kits to Rural Artisans (SITRA), the
Training of Rural Youth for Self Employment (TRYSEM), the Ganga Kalyan Yojana (GKY) and the
Million Wells Scheme (MWS) into a holistic self employment scheme called Swarnjayanti Gram
Swarozgar Yojana (SGSY). Keeping in view the needs and aspirations of the local people, Panchayati
Raj Institutions have been involved in the programme implementation and these institutions constitute
the core of decentralized development of planning and its implementations. The Ministry is also

Advantages Of Agent Based Simulation
1. Introduction
Since the development of economics as a science, the majority of economists have used analytical
models to explain economics hugely based on mathematical principles. Starting from the basic
theorem of equilibrium which is very easily developed using mathematical principles only, to the
optimization techniques, which involves plain usage of derivatives and other mathematical principles,
these techniques lack to make a whole model with many unknowns in order to derive to a complex set
of results, in contrary to only one result working in certain assumptions that they offer. Even though
most of the theorems we use today in economics derive from analytical methods, the need to make
decisions or solve real economical issues nowadays ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Agent Based Modeling and Simulation
One could simply ask, why use ABM or ACE? As mentioned in the section above, there are several
reasons why using ABM has a sort of competitive advantages toward other analytical or statistical
based methods.
In ACE, the possibility to include a large number of agents in the model, all in distributed corporation,
provides creating of a large scale system in order to observe micro or macro principles. This is quite
hard and tedious to be accomplished even using econometric principles with the help of software
program, due to the problem of biased results and limitation on the dependent variables. In the context
of ACE, several experiments can be conducted with unlimited number of agents involved in the
system.
Secondly, ACE can be considered as a great software for any business who would like to make
decision making more strategic based, and furthermore, increase its competitive advantage in the
market, by simulation the same conditions of the actual current market, to a virtual world in a simple
software. Thereby usage of ACE is not restricted to only research based works, but can be used as a
competitive tool for any business as well. The traditional rules of forecasting or gaining competence in
a business do not provide such advanced possibility to forecast and

The assignments are simply not intended to be exercises in arriving at a predetermined answer. Rather,
the applications of the suggested readings have the following objectives:
To provide a means for improving the writing skills of students. From all reports, accounting majors
too often leave college lacking in the basic ability to compose and construct sentences and paragraphs.
Accounting and auditing (especially as one moves up in an organization) obviously require skills other
than the purely quantitative. Memos, reports, footnotes, audit and accounting guides, etc., all require
accountants and auditors to be effective communicators of the written word. Indeed, the instructor
may want to team up with a member of the school s English or communications department to
enhance the effectiveness of these assignments. The auditing instructor can then evaluate the technical
and research portions of the assignment, while the English instructor would make suggestions as to
grammar, syntax, construction of sentences and paragraphs, logic of the thought process, etc. As a
preliminary step, the instructor may want to assign articles such as Word Crunching: A Primer for
Accountants from the March 1990 issue of the Journal of Accountancy.
To introduce students to accounting and business journals as well as other important publications.

Australia And Japan Expressed Their Interest Of Signing A...
Australia and Japan expressed their interest in signing a defence technology cooperation agreement
after Japanese Prime Minister Abe and Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott s meeting during Abe s
visit to Australia in July (Prime Minister of Australia 2014). This is surprising for the international
society as the Japanese constitution did not allow Japan to export its military technologies until the
Japanese government s recent change to Article 9 (Nye 2014). Even though the agreement is not
signed yet, this news had attracted many attention from around the globe. There are various kinds of
explanations and analyzations on why this two states would choose to release such information at this
time. The argument for this essay would be that the defence technology cooperation agreement may be
one of the many policies that aims on making Japan a normal country, in response in the rising power
of China and the threats from Korea, so that it can play a better role in balancing regional security.
This essay will try to prove this argument by briefly introducing why Japan is not a normal country
within the international society and Prime Minister Abe s recent efforts to change this situation, how a
defence technology cooperation agreement between Australia and Japan can play a critical role on this
matter, why Japan and Australia are considering choose to sign such agreement with each other, and
the incentives for Australia to support Japan s goal of strengthening its military

The Political Economy Of Communication
The political economy of communication is using political economy approach to analyse the media
and communication. Therefore, before discuss the political economy of communication we need to
figure out what is political economy and what is communication. The definition of political economy
is not simple. This essay uses the definitions given by Vincent Mosco and explores its origin in Greek
and inspiration from the Classical Political Economy. Apart from the Classical Political Economy, this
essay also describes other forms of this approach, such as Critical Political Economy and Neoclassical
Political Economy. Latter the characteristics of political economy study are also discussed based on
Vincent Mosco s work in the 1990s.
The part of communication starts by defining the concept of communication in a political economic
way. To understand deeply the political economy of communication, it is necessary compare it with
culture studies, so this part also explains the similarities and differences between this two studies.
Finally the public television is used as an example to describe the peculiarities of the media and the
political economy of the media.
What is political economy?
At the beginning, the political economy has is origin in Greek. The word economics is composed of
oikos and noms which mean house and law (Mosco, 2009). Therefore, economics is the management
of the household (Mosco, 2009). Political has its origin of polos which means city state

Evolution Of Modern Technology
The 1990 s was the beginnings of modern technology as we know it today. When the Internet
first came out it began as a new trend, and many people thought it wouldn t last. Over the past 27
years technology has evolved in ways no one would have predicted in its early stages. From
cellphones, to computers, TVs, and the Internet itself has so vastly improved in such a small
amount of time. Technology has changed the way we live daily. From education, interacting with
friends and family, dating, music, our health, shopping, entertainment, and become famous our
society as a whole has evolved to become entirely dependent on technology. Before schools had
students carry heavy textbooks and notebooks. But now in this day and age we carry tablets
around storing the information for schools. It has gotten to the point that schools across the
country either give out electronics or the students are required to buy them for school. On a
related topic paper books are going out of style. Everyone now reads with an tablet. It s good for
the environment saving thousands of trees. Interacting with family and friends is a lot different
than it is now. Before you would write a letter, speak on the phone, or just talk in person. Now
we just post to our social media about news in our lives, then we can check to see if they liked,
shared, or reposted your information. With the help of social media dating has turned into the
digital age. I m sure all our parents met in real life first through a friend or just flirting with a
complete stranger. Now apps and websites are the way to go meet someone. In the 90 s and
very early 2000 s music was still played on CDs and Walkmans. Digital music was not a thing
like it is today. Music stores are non existent. You would have to burn CDs to upload your
favorite music. Now with our smartphones we can download any type of music, we can create
playlists, and create our own music collection with one app. Our health has gotten better and
worse as technology has advanced. With technology advances in science getting more advanced.
We are helping more people and saving more lives. But we are sleeping a lot less, social media
and apps are distraction for

Alabama V. Jaffree ( 1985 )
Wallace, Governor of Alabama v. Jaffree (1985): Central Question: Does the Alabama statute 16 1
20.1, allowing a period of silence for meditation or voluntary prayer violate the First Amendment
Establishment Clause that is applied to the states by the Fourteenth Amendment? Facts of the Case:
The case of Wallace v. Jaffree calls into question the constitutionality of an Alabama statute that
authorized teachers to lead a one minute period of silence for meditation or voluntary prayer in all
public schools. Ishmael Jaffree, the parent of three students in the Mobile County Public School
system filed a complaint that two of his three children had been subjected to various acts of religious
indoctrination, as a result of Alabama statute 16 1 20.1 and asked for an injunction prohibiting Mobile
County schools from maintaining or allowing the maintenance of regular religious prayer services.
The purpose of Jaffree s complaint was to prohibit the devotional services occurring in his children s
school and the consequent mockery of his children that occurred when they refused to recite the
prayers to Almighty God (Stevens, 40). This type of law in Alabama public schools was not the first of
its kind. Prior to statute 6 11 20.1, Alabama passed law 16 1 20 authorizing one minute of silence in
public schools for meditation. After the authorization of statute 16 1 20.1 came 16 1 20.2, which
allowed teachers to lead willing students in a prayer (Stevens, 40). Opinion of the

Infectious Diseases In Sub-Saharan Africa
Introduction:
A disease is considered infectious if it spreads from one person to another through airborne means
such as direct physical contact between people, or vectors such as insects. Infectious diseases are the
leading cause of death, accounting for a quarter to a third of the estimated 54 million deaths
worldwide (Gannon, 2000). Approximately half of all deaths caused by infectious diseases can be
attributed to three diseases; tuberculosis, malaria and AIDS (CDC, 2007). Together these diseases
cause over 300 million illnesses and more than 5 million deaths each year.
Issues and Concern:
Infectious diseases such as TB, malaria, hepatitis, HIV/AIDS are among the seven biggest killers
worldwide (Gannon, 2000). It is estimated that HIV/AIDS ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

For those infected, antiretroviral therapy (ART) can manage the disease by prolonging and improving
quality of life, but it is not the cure. TB treatment depends on a strategy of rapid detection by sputum
smear or x ray followed by quick provision of directly observed multi drug therapy for six months
(CSIS, 2014). The spraying of insecticides as well as the introduction of insecticide treated bed bets??
have helped reduce the incidence of malaria by one third (CSIS, 2014). The use of anti viral drug have
had the dual benefit of curing the infection and reducing the blood parasites reservoir that allows
further spread of the disease (CSIS, 2014). Although these infectious diseases are a global concern
drug resistance is ever present and access to effective vaccines is still not available (CSIS,

The Lotus Eater
Mythic Structure in Somerset Maugham s The Lotus Eater The word myth is derived from the Greek
word mythos , which means a traditional tale common to the member of a tribe, race or nation. It
usually involves the supernatural elements to explain some natural phenomenon in boldly imaginative
terms. Today myth has become one of the most prominent terms in contemporary literature analysis. It
was Northrop Frye, one of the most influential myth critics (others including Robert Graves, Francis
Fersusson, Richard Chase, Philip Wheelwright), who discovered certain formulas in the word order.
He identified these formulas as the conventional myths and metaphors which he calls archetypes .

Now, all that sets a text in relationship, whether obvious or concealed, with other texts is denoted by
Genette as transtextuality (1). As a study of relationships, which link a text with the transtextual
network out of which it produces its meaning, it can be further divided into five more specific
subcategories: 1. intertextuality  a relationship of copresence between two texts or among several
texts , that is, the actual presence of one text within the other (Genette 1,2), as we see in the case of
quotations, allusions and plagiarism. 2. paratextuality  a relationship between the text and all the
extra textual writings and materials (peritexts and epitexts), which surround the text and help to direct
and control the reader s reception of it, but themselves remain outside. 3. metatextuality  a
relationship between the text and other texts, upon which it serves as an explicit or implicit
commentary. 4. hypertextuality  a relationship uniting a text (Text B) and another text(Text A), upon
which the previous one is grafted in a way that is not that of a commentary (Genette 5) (here the Text
A is called the hypotext and the Text B the hypertext). 5. archytextuality  a relationship between the
text and the different modes, genres and theme that it refers or belongs to. Now we shall turn our
attention to the fourth one of the above mentioned subcategories, namely to hypertextuality, which
occurs directly at the centre of Genette s

The Death Of The Sun, By Lorraine Hansberry And Hamlet,...
Whether it is over the death of a loved one or a very emotional situation, grief is inevitable. Most
individuals experience a form of grief at some point in their lifetime. Coping with a distressing
situation can be a very difficult task and there are many arguments as to whether there is a set and
correct method on how to deal with grief or not. Many people have created a grieving process that
includes going through certain stages in order. However, this proposed grieving method is no more
than a false theory. Due to the fact that every single person grieves differently, there is no way to
possibly set a specific way to grieve. A Raisin in The Sun, by Lorraine Hansberry and Hamlet, Prince
of Denmark, by William Shakespeare both ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Theoretically, denial is the first recommended step to experience normal grief; anger follows. The
second advised step to experiencing a progressive grieving process is anger. Although anger is the
suggested step after denial, many people do not experience it in this order or at all. Halperin defines
anger, when you wake up from the dreamy state of denial, you ll find yourself in mile two . . . anger
(70); this explains the idea that people become very angry at the fact that something extremely
saddening has occurred in their life. There is an instance when Walter Lee shows a form of anger,
WILL SOMEBODY PLEASE LISTEN TO ME TODAY (Hansberry 399), illustrating the idea that he
becomes frustrated at the fact that his father passed away. Walter Lee does not necessarily feel this
stage second; he could have felt anger immediately after his father passed away. Many people deal
with grief by showing numerous forms of temperament; however, not everyone in the stories go
through this step second and some do not experience it at all. While anger is the second step that is
wrongly proposed in order to undergo a normal grieving process, bargaining is the third. The third
recommended step in order to encounter a progressive grieving method is the bargaining stage.
Contrary to popular belief, this step does not have to be experienced third or at all. Halperin defines
bargaining, someone who is hoping to postpone death . . . says I ll do anything for a

pedophile due to her participating in pageants, linking her adversity to a little pageants girl worst
nightmare. According to the Stacy Dittrich, a former detective, a show like Toddlers and Tiaras is the
kind of videos pedophiles would watch. The publication of these girls makes it easier for pedophile to
track them down, as their towns and names would be listed on their outing. Though there is little
evidence suggesting that pageants put little girls under risk, many psychologist still believe that
pageants teach girls to be objects of others gratification. The girls being encouraged to act in flirtatious

outer beauty overshadows all else, including being knowledgeable or resourceful. They re learning
that their natural beauty is never enough, and equaling their self esteem and worth to who is the most

students even have a triple major. I think this also shows that Tulane is the type of school that attracts
ambitious students with a variety of interests. Additionally, I like that the core curriculum at Tulane

themselves. The admissions counselor I spoke to also discussed that around 1/3 of Tulane students

Industrialisation On The Structure Of The Family
The Effects of Industrialisation on the Structure of the Family
The pre industrial family was said to be an extended family consisting of three generations, the
children, parents and the grandparents. The family would all work together in the farms to help
provide for the entire families needs, children as young a 5 or 6 would have been found work to do.
However this was until the Industrial revolution when factories become the main source of work and
development. The pre industrial societies were largely based on extended kinship networks; land and
other resources were commonly owned by a range of relatives that extended well beyond the unit of
the nuclear family. It was very common for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Parsons believed that the separation of extended families caused nuclear families to be formed in order
to take advantage of the new job opportunities that had been brought about. He also argued that the
second fundamental change to the family was that they no longer needed to produce their own
materials and food as specialised agencies gradually took over and the home and workplace became
separate as people became wage earners. The state eventually took over the functions of education,
health and welfare and so consequently the nuclear family was able to specialise in child centred
functions like socialisation. Thirdly Parson also argued that the new nuclear unit provided the husband
and wife with very cleaver social roles. The man was the instrumental leader , who was responsible
for the economic welfare of the family group, and goes out and earns money, while the female was
seen as the expressive leader , primarily responsible for the socialisation of the children and the
emotional care and support of family members. Parsons concluded that only the nuclear family could
effectively provide the achievement orientation and geographically mobile workforce required by
modern societies and that there is a functional fit between the extended family and pre industrial

The Trench Monologue
Click. The tape recorder started up.
It was dirty that s for sure. The rats ate at your toes and the smell was horrible.
Ed paused and wiped a tear from his eye, staring right across the table at his grandson, who preceded
to ask the age old question.
What really happened that day Grandad?
The grey sky hung close to 16 year old Ed and the other soldiers as they stood, lined up in the trench.
Rain poured heavily over their helmets, draining into the mud. The French sun hid hazily in the smog
covered sky. THUD THUD THUD, cannons pounded shells through the air, towards the Germans.
Get ready men! shouted the commander.
Next to Ed, a man named John loaded his rifle.
You ready Ed? he whispered.
Ed nodded.

gunner who had spared his life was slumped over, motionless.
Moonlight flooded into the trench as the patrol officers found Ed curled up in a ball, weeping.
What is your name son?
Ed Aarons, sir, he said, looking up.
I can t believe you re still alive! Your family is worried sick about you, back in England. You will be

Israel Case Study
Israel received their independence in 1948, 69 years later they have surpassed more milestones than
most countries do in 200 years. (Katz, 2017) Their history shows nothing but war and conflict all the
way from the Biblical time frame to present day. Israel has gone from poverty to wealth in a brief
duration of time. Israel s Political, Military and Economic structures have developed tenfold in
contrast to other countries that were established four times longer. Through Israel s military, the
government backing, and their ability to adapt economically, Israel is holding their enemies at bay and
escalating to a superpower nation. First, Israel is the only Democracy in the Middle East,

The Common Rule and Human Research Essay
Human research done in the United States nowadays is regulated by the Common Rule. The Common

the National Commission for the Protection of Human Subjects for Biomedical and Behavioral
Research developed in 1974 to address detection of serious maltreatment of human subjects from the
Syphilis Study at Tuskegee (Iltis, 2011). Some key requirements of the Common Rule are: assuring

research proposal has been reviewed by any other entity a copy needs to be with the proposal to St.

Effects Of Fast Food
Many fast food restaurants are available whenever you want and at any time during the day. From In n
out to Chick fil A, fast food places are convenient and quick but not many people know about the
effects these places bring into our lives. The most important effect is what it can do to your health.
From the convenience, new deals and prices, these places are rising in popularity. Popular places such
as mcdonalds and taco bell have traveled far beyond what we could imagine just for a small meal. The
effects of these fast food restaurants and their popularity have caused many problems in the lives of
people.
The biggest and major effect of fast food places is the affect on your health. The popularity of fast
food places takes a toll on the health of their costumers. Many families have a mother and father that
work hard during the day and struggle to have the time to make food for their families at night. This
causes them too need to improvise, because it takes much less time to go through the drive through
than it does to make a home cooked meal. Although it doesn t seem bad to do it once and a while, it
starts to become a habit. One day of fast food turns onto more, its simple, easy and accessible. The
grease fried foods, or the fake products that are hidden in these delicious foods take a toll on our
health more than we know. One fast food meal can be packed with more sodium, fat and calories then

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Litigation
The litigation is the formal and conventional way in dispute resolution over the centuries of time.
Courts are traditional, recognizable forums in which litigation is adjudicated (Kennedy and Richards,
2004). Even though there are number of methods available outside the court system litigation is still
act a major role in dispute resolution as the conventional method.
But with the time people identified limitations of the system which created uncomfortable situations to
users due to certain drawbacks hold with the litigation system. Through litigation successive
governments has ensured that people are delivered with justice and adjudicated on their disputes. Even
though disputes are resolved through litigation people come across so many difficulties, such as stress,
expenditure, delay and bitter arguments that pave the way for further disputes.
A major issue on using litigation for labour disputes is frequent postponements awarded in hearing a
case in the courts. According to Sivananthiran and Ratnam (2003) the most prominent cause
responsible for delay in adjudication is frequent adjournment granted by the Labour Courts. Both
workmen and employer seek adjournment after adjournment at each of the above stage and this
contributes to the delay in dispute resolution process.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR)
President Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR) is known for his influential pieces of legislation that were
passed and signed into law during America s darkest days of the Great Depression and World War II.
Within the first hundred days of President Roosevelt s first term he signed the New Deal . This New
Deal created government programs to help produce government jobs for the unemployed, help
promote economic growth, and helped regulate the banks and Wall Street. Some of the original New
Deal programs are still in use today such as: the Securities and Exchange Commission, Federal

Toxic Masculinity In Lord Of The Flies
Within Lord of the Flies, we see firsthand the violence and destruction that lies within humanity, and
boys in particular. Without society, they fell apart. They committed atrocities that go against every
rule, every social expectation, we see in humanity. Although Lord of the Flies shows important ideas
about boys place in society, it also allows the reader to form damaging views on ideas such as death,
violence, and conflict. When you hear the phrase toxic masculinity , it s usually used as a joke.
However, there s a reason that it s a concept. Toxic masculinity is a social science term used to
describe the phenomenon within a society where masculine traits, such as anger, violence, egotism,
contempt, aggression, as well as showing destructive or apathetic behavior, are rewarded. Normally,
these traits are regulated by law and society. When the boys are taken out of society, however, they
have no restraints, leading to the boys relying on these traits. In their minds, aggression and violence
are good; however, a successful society cannot be made from violence. Even societies such as Sparta
valued other traits: honesty, ambition, diligence, duty, strength, loyalty, and bravery. It wasn t just
violence; instead, they created a community of us against them , which may have lead to violence, but
it wasn t the founding value. In battle, they were told to come back with their shield or on it, which
shows the bravery needed to be a warrior and loyalty to the state. Mandatory education and martial
training emphasized duty and diligence. The boys had none of this. Their society was built on
violence, aggression, and disorder, with a survival of the fittest mentality. Of course, the way we raise
boys isn t going to lead to a healthy society. The characteristics we instill in male adolescents do
nothing to contribute to a positive society, and without order and regulations, these characteristics
create the opposite of a positive society. They create a breeding ground for anarchy, chaos, and
brutality, even to the point of sadism. Golding is trying to use this story to tell society that we can t
afford to promote such traits, that cruelty will only cause problems, that aggression will never lead to a

IQ Tests are Not an Accurate Measure of a Person s...
IQ tests are not an accurate measure of a person s intelligence. I will be analyzing the reasons why I
think that IQ tests are not an accurate measure of the intelligence. These reasons will be accompanied
with solid proven facts that will discount the accuracy that is falsely considered to be a part of IQ
tests. Today IQ tests are a part of many instances where intelligence is being judged.
Not an accurate measure The test that has today evolved as the IQ test was initially designed by Sir
Francis Galton. He had designed it to differentiate between the abnormal and normal intellectual
growth in children at that time. The capacities that he tested or that are generally tested today have not

Another issue, with these tests are that many a time people view their criteria as very limited. For, e.g.
Gardner has claimed that there are multi dimensions to a person s intelligence, while these tests only
test a few of them. Thus, the tests are in no position to claim that they really represent the actual
intelligence of a person. The tests assess only a narrow range of abilities therefore if a person is adept
at a characteristic that is not being tested in the test then that person is deemed to be considered a
person with low IQ. Such a practice is not fair and cannot be generalized. (Gardner, 1983) (Plucker,
1998). A big argument is that the word Intelligence has not been defined in its full context yet.
Therefore, when a thing has not been understood properly then how can we design measures to gauge
them. Walter Lippmann a journalist from the 1920s said: We cannot measure intelligence when we
have not defined it. And I totally agree to it because to this day we have not decided upon the
characteristic of intelligence. It contains very many things and to narrow it down to a few would be
like being biased. Many characteristic has been defined, but many to this day remain unknown or
unexplainable. Jean Piaget has said that intelligence us never stagnant it grows and develops as

Lactose Lab Report
Abstract Lactose is recognised as a disaccharide; in other words, it consists of glucose and galactose
and two smaller sugars bound altogether with a covalent bond. In the form described, lactose is
indigestible by us humans; therefore it must be hydrolysed, or broken down, for our body in order to
process it. Lactase catalyses this process by decreasing the energy required for hydrolysis to happen.
Lactase is a digestive enzyme that catalyses the breakdown of lactose, a sugar found in milk. Lactase
works well within a limited range of both pH and temperature in its environment, thus making it
dependent on both elements for it to complete this essential reaction. If lactase is seen as non

Therefore, they would sell the Pantera under the sign of the cat. Just in case you don t remember, the
Lincoln Mercury dealer network used a cougar as a mascot in the 70s. This was a perfect fit with the
Italian panther moniker.
Pantera Problems and Solutions
Elvis Presley owned a 1974 bright Yellow Pantera. It s said, [he opened fire on the automobile] when
it refused to start at his Memphis, Tennessee, home. The reasons behind the multiple issues
surrounding the first full production Panteras are attributed to a rush to production.
The sports car went from an idea on paper to cars rolling off the assembly line in less than a year.
Airflow was a big shortcoming in these sports cars. The engine overheated easily due to an undersized
radiator with poor airflow across its core.
Airflow was also an issue for the interior cabin. Drivers and passengers complained about oppressive
temperatures in the tight interior cabin. This issue was amplified when the engine began to overheat.
Owner s also complained about driver comfort.
The intrusion of the left front wheel well into the foot area made the car difficult to drive. This is
especially true if you have large feet. Jay Leno owns a 1971 Pantera. He s on record of saying he has
to take his shoes off to drive the car.
All Panteras came with Ford s ZF manual transmission. It utilized an Italian style gated shifter that
looked better than it operated. Although the ZF five speed is considered durable and reliable,

A Brief Look at Utilitarianism
Utilitarianism is an attractive philosophy which claims to replace arbitrary seeming rules by a morality
with a single coherent basis. As the most common form of consequentialism, based on the pursuit of
the greatest happiness of the greatest number, it argues that acts should be judged as right or wrong
according to their consequences. Because happiness is the only thing that is good in itself, and
unhappiness is the only thing that is inherently bad, everything else is only good or bad according to
its tendency to produce happiness or unhappiness. In a business type system, utilitarianism is also
attractive as a means of decision making in which the majority must choose wisely. This type of
decision making may have a positive effect on what action to take, but at the same time it might have
a cost that would not be taken lightly by a business.
From an engineer s and company s stand point, Utilitarianism would best fit, for the simple reason that
it will satisfy everyone, because it is more of a general theory, with a large margin area of company
and consumer satisfaction. Where other theories might be more specific to the situation, with
utilitarianism almost all fits within the category. This may be a good thing for a company, but at the
same time, one of the difficulties with the utilitarian standard is that it seems to sometimes favor the
greater aggregate good at the expense of a vulnerable minority; the minority being the company s
consumer (Rabins).

cortex, which is associated with perceptual integration, and associates with the premotor cortex, the
cerebellum, and basal ganglia, all which help, regulate movement and motor control. The PFC
additionally connects to those structures, which are critical for memory and include the thalamus, and
hippocampus. Furthermore, the PFC connects to the hypothalamus, which regulates homeostasis, with
the amygdala, which regulates human relations. Finally, the PFC is reciprocates with brain stem nuclei
responsible for arousal and activation. The interconnections of the PFC uniquely positioned for
directing and assimilating the work of all the brain structures but are fragile and leave the PFC
susceptible to injury and disease.
Wood and Grafman (2003) break the PFC further down into two major regions

Dualism and Artificial Intelligence
Mind body dualism is usually seen as the central issue in philosophy of the mind. The problem with
mind body dualism is that it is unknown whether the mind really is a separate entity from the human
body as Descartes states in his argument, or whether the mind is the brain itself. Descartes believed
that in a person existed two major components, the physical body and the nonphysical body which
was called the mind or soul. As a scientist, Descartes believed in mechanical theories of matter,
however, he was also very religious and did not believe people could merely be mechanical creatures
that ran like clockwork. And so, it was Descartes who argued that the mind directed thoughts. To
account for this, he split the world into two parts, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Turing, a physicalist, believed that artificial intelligence could be achieved in the future. Turing argued
that the mind was merely due to the physical aspects of the brain and so a machine could one day be
created that has a mind of its own, i.e. artificial intelligence. He created a test called the Turing Test to
determine whether a machine has artificial intelligence. In the Turing Test, an interrogator asks two
subjects a series of questions. One of the subjects is a person, the other is the computer. The goal is for
the person to imitate a computer and the computer to imitate the person. If the interrogator is fooled
into thinking that the computer is the human then the computer, according to Turing, is concluded to
have the ability to think and thus, have a mind. Turing argued that machines passing the Turing Test
were sufficient for ascribing thought. There were those who did not agree with Turing s belief that
computers would one day pass the Turing Test or that artificial intelligence could be created. A
philosopher by the name of Lady Lovlace challenged Turing s theory. She argued that machines could
never learn and adapt and so nothing creative could ever come from a machine. She claimed that

College Sports Persuasive Essay
College sports were originally started to give the school some spirit. It s the same with high school, it
was there to give the kids something to do and give the other kids something to believe in. But, as
time has progressed, college sports have taken a completely different path than high school. Now
college sports have turned into huge money makers, and high school sports struggle to stay alive.
Should college level sports continue as they are? I believe yes, even if it is a bit corrupt, it is beneficial
to the school and could be changed. College sports do a lot to help out the University s budget. This is
undeniable, where else would that TV and cheap knick knack money go? In a world where thirty
percent of America s budgets go to defense, where as five percent goes to education, the teachers need
a different way to get paid. Of course, they have those ridiculous student loans, but that s a different
rant all together. All of that aside, it s hard to argue that college sports don t help the school. The
Gators have earned a hundred and six million dollars in 2008 alone. While some of this money is used
in buying ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But, we could very easily make everything run much smoother with a few small tweaks. First off, they
need to stop the hard core advertising. Many of the students and coaches are practically owned by
different companies simply because they asked them to advertise. Its clear above that they don t need
the advertising money, so why are they always accepting it? Unless I am remembering it wrong, it is
illegal for non professional players to be paid simply for playing a game. Stopping the advertising that
is just putting money in the coach, and player s, pockets would benefit everyone. Another thing they
could do, is lower how much the coach is getting. 4 million a year is extremely excessive, will cause
large issues in the future, if they aren t

Not A Hero
Not a Hero is a simple and beautiful World War One poem by Clyde Hamilton which has been read at
ANZAC Day ceremonies across Australia. The poem tells a narrative of an ANZAC veteran, or old
digger , at an ANZAC ceremony telling stories of heroes to a young boy. It effectively uses a simple,
yet descriptive and telling vocabulary, as well as using literary devices such as rhyme and alliteration.
It s conservative and structured style demonstrated throughout the poem creates rhythm and makes the
poem flow and thus easier to fathom. The poem s theme is a simple, yet powerful one; never forget the
people who sacrificed their life for ours to be free. The poem refers to these people as heroes
repeatedly in accordance with the theme. This also links back to the title, Not A Hero, as I served with
many heroes, the ones that never came home. So when you talk of heroes, it s important to understand,
The greatest of all heroes gave their lives defending this land. This also implies that the old digger is
not in fact a hero. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The poem maintains a traditional structure consisting of 4 sextets, or 6 line stanzas. This creates an
ideal length for the poem for both attention span reasons and for the sake of keeping the narrative
uncomplicated, as well as creating a visually appealing layout on the page. A distinctive feature is
each line has two phrases or clauses, for example, The ANZAC Day march was over the old Digger
had done his best. , and He made his way to a park bench and sat with lowered head. This creates
rhythm within the piece, appealing to aural senses, making the information easier to digest. Not a Hero
has a consistent rhyme scheme of AABBCC, which while simple, is effective at emphasizing the
aforementioned rhythm, creating aural appeal. The structure of the poem Not a Hero has a simple,
formal and conservative

Police Subculture Analysis
I. Question I have been assigned to define the concept of police subculture and the role it plays in
police relations with African Americans, and to describe the six subculture perspectives of police
officers as they are presented in the text, and to discuss whether I believe those perspectives are still
valid today.
II. Answer In his article, Strecher describes the police subculture, as when police officers are working
together, they often develop the same set of values, customs, and artifacts that regulate how members
behave and which establish the boundaries of appropriateness, and can also be determined by what
ethnic group one belongs to (Strecher, 1971, P.224). For instance, according to Strecher, there are
large groups of police officers that work primarily within subcultures, with African Americans,
Hispanics, Native Americans, Asian, Jewish, etc. (Strecher, 1971, P.224). With regard to police
relations with African Americans and how the police subculture influences this relationship, Strecher
describes this as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Maintaining order is the responsibility of police officers within their patrol territory (Strecher, 1971,

officers need to possess curiosity and suspiciousness, and are considered indispensible to

appropriateness is important to a police officers public image, and any behavior such as quarrels,
drinking, loitering in large groups, loud conversations, sitting on sidewalks, and other activities are
inappropriate and to be avoided (Strecher, 1971, P. 233). VI. Part of the public function is to deal with

Rick Deckard Symbolism
In his novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, Philip K. Dick criticizes American mass
consumerism by commodifying human existence. Precisely, Dick characterizes Rick Deckard and his
wife, Iran, as individuals who rely on the mood organ and the ownership of animals to define their
lives. It is evident that Deckard and his wife exemplify the archetypal consumer s inability to
individualize when these characters experiences are determined by the mood setting to which they dial
in their mood organ (Dick 6). The mood organ is thus symbolic of the characters inability to
experience emotions independently. As an object of self expression, the mood organ evokes a criticism
of mass consumerism, where the ownership of an item is a declaration of one s identity and placement
within a social hierarchy. Here, Deckard and Iran s identities are predicated on their mood organs.
Essentially, Dick commodifies human existence by having the ... Show more content on

This inequality emphasizes the notion that the individual s worth is dependent on extrinsic factors.
Furthermore, to Deckard, owning an animal is comparable to displaying a trophy in which he shelters
his own pride and self worth. For instance, when Deckard purchases the goat, he does so to get [his]
confidence, [his] faith in [him]self and [his] abilities, back since owning an electric animal sapped
[his] morale (Dick 170). Deckard s perspective is similar to the mass consumerist behaviour present
among Americans, wherein the act of consumption instills a sense of importance. Specifically, to
Deckard, it is confidence, a faith in his abilities, and his morale. Dick uses Deckard s pursuit of an
animal and the mood organ to explore the commodification of human existence in a consumerist
society. In doing so, Dick criticizes mass consumerism on the basis that it artificializes an individual s

Experiment Using Fluid Flow And Study The Loading...
Team 15: Sohel Jiwani, Huanyu Lin, Lisa Nguyen, Yin Zhu
Problem 3 Report
Part 1 In the first part of our problem where we design an experiment using fluid flow to mimic and
study the loading conditions at the cellular level of a tissue involved in our strength activity which is
the squat, we decided to look at the endothelial cells that line the interior surface of the blood vessels
along the rectus femoris muscle tissue. To do this, we used the parallel plate flow chamber device.
This device allows us to observe and analyze the shear stresses that the endothelial cells in the blood
vessels are subjected to over a period of time.
We preferred to use the parallel plate flow chamber, or PPFC because this device is better at taking
into account fluids like blood and the inhomogeneity present in shear stresses. While we were using
the PPFC, the chamber s flow was a laminar flow and it was fully developed. Other properties of the
PPFC include the shear stress being constant for a given flow rate, Q. To begin using the PPFC, we
line the endothelial cells at the bottom plate and calculate the shear stress that these cells exhibit. This
calculation can be achieved through the following equation: The variables Q, μ, b, and h stand for the
volumetric flow rate, viscosity of the fluid, and the width and height of the chamber, respectively.
Using data from literature and incorporating them into our equation, we calculated the shear stress: τ =
11.426 dyne/cm2.

Anna Sewell Research Paper
Anna Sewell was perhaps the only person whom book was called the first significant children s story
in English language. She was born in Norfolk, England on March 30, 1820. Her father was Isaac
Sewell (1793 1879), and her mother, Mary Wright Sewell (1798 1884) was a successful writer of
children s books in her own right. She faced many challenges and accomplishments in her lifetime.
Growing up she loved riding horses and telling stories. As a young girl, Anna was more concerned
about the humane treatment of horses and she often spent hours with her father traveling to and from
the station. She helped her mother edit her manuscripts from an early age and published her own in
1877. Sewell received most of her education at home and had a younger brother named Philip.
Sewell wrote the book Black Beauty the last seven years of her life. She began writing it 1871 and
published it in 1877. It was dedicated to including kindness, sympathy, and an understanding
treatment of horses little did she know it would become a best seller. She ... Show more content on

At the age of fourteen she fell and sprained her ankle while running down a steep carriage. Despite
this, and most likely because of mistreatment of her injury, Sewell was lame for the rest of her life and
was unable to stand without a crutch or to walk for any length of time. She did however travel to
health spas in Germany and Spain to help cure her ankle injuries. Also, growing up, she was often too
weak to hold the pencil herself, so instead her mother wrote while Anna told her story. Following that
in 1871, Sewell was confined her home by her disability. Sewell became increasingly ill during the
writing of Black Beauty, and it is only through her mother s transcription and dictation that the novel
was completed. Anna Sewell died of hepatitis on April 25, 1878 just five months after her publication,
living long enough to see the book s initial early

Linear Programming
The development of linear programming has been ranked among the most important scientific
advances of the mid 20th century. Its impact since the 1950 s has been extraordinary. Today it is a
standard tool used by some companies (around 56%) of even moderate size. Linear programming uses
a mathematical model to describe the problem of concern. Linear programming involves the planning
of activities to obtain an optimal result, i.e., a result that reaches the specified goal best (according to
the mathematical model) among all feasible alternatives.
Linear Programming as seen by various reports by many companies has saved them thousands to even
millions of dollars. Since this is true why isn t everyone using Linear Programming? Maybe the ...

I believe that every company should be using LP and I have hypothesized that linear programming
increases both EPS, ROI and by definition Profit. This research therefore assumes that a company not
using LP would have made less money than one that did use LP. The sample is 28 companies and I felt
this would be sufficient as a sample size as statisticians typically recommend a minimum of 20 data
points (in this case companies) in order to test a hypothesis. The companies are located in and near the
state of Delaware and also include New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
This research is not exhaustive and therefore will not be final in terms of how it is interpreted but it
will assist others who wish to use much larger samples and over much longer periods of time to refine
the results and potentially prove that LP does have a consistent improvement effect on a company s
profits, ROI and EPS measures of performance. Method
I used the survey research method as the basis of my research design. Calls were made to each
company that was randomly selected and for whom their results were collected. Each company was
asked the question Can we speak to your corporate planning and decision support function . If they
were unsure of which department was meant, we would then ask Can we speak to the key people
within your organization who are responsible for

The Perks Of Being A Wallflower Analysis
I m starting to feel like what I dreamt about her last night was true, Charlie writes (Chbosky 116) In
The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky, Charlie faces internal and external conflicts
during his first year in high school as a freshman while trying to fit in and coming to terms that the
aunt he loved the most molested him. Conflicts drive the learning and acceptance of coming of age.
Molestation is a serious topic and often is not talked about openly due to the sensitivity of the
situation. Charlie was molested by his Aunt Helen when she moved into his house and Charlie had no
idea that it had happened in his active conscious. This creates a major conflict when Charlie was close
to having his first complete sexual

The Invisible Man Essay
The Invisible Man, by H.G. Wells, is composed of many small themes that combined to form two
major themes in the novel. Some of the minor themes are acting before thinking and denial of
unexplainable events. It is based on the two major themes of science experiments gone wrong and the
ignorance of society.
The most important theme in the novel was the experiment that Griffin, the invisible man, was
working and it was not going exactly as planned. The way that the experiment went bad was not by
accident; instead it was Griffin who had made the mistake of turning himself invisible. The reason that
the invisible man had for becoming invisible was that he was suspected as to be a vivesectionalist and

The people could see his footprints and see him if he became dirty. Another thing that Griffin did not
realize before his experiment back fired was that he could not eat if he wanted to stay invisible. The
people around him could see the food inside his stomach, until his body absorbed it.
The experiment that Griffin went through was his own fault and also sealed his own fate. The major
problem with his invisibility was that Griffin was not able to keep or have any friends. His only
contact was after he was all bandaged up and looked as though he had been in a bad accident. Without
any human contact or support Griffin was destined to become crazy. In the ending chapters of the
novel it is obvious that Griffin has lost his mind and is completely insane.
Not wanton killing, but a judicious slaying. The point is, they know there is an Invisible Man as well
as we know there is an Invisible Man. And that Invisible Man, Kemp, must now establish a Reign of
Terror. (Pg. 114)
The previous quote was taken as the invisible man was talking to Kemp about his plans of judicial
killing. This proves that Griffin has gone completely insane and it is his way of getting back at society
for excluding him. He does not realize that if he had never made himself invisible nothing like this
would be happening.

  • 2. The Negative Aspects Of Social Media A picture is worth their pride. A picture is worth their self esteem. A picture is worth their dignity. Social media networking has become a large part of today s society. Media applications such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat are rising in popularity, not only amongst teens, but adults as well. According to Pew Research Center, in 2015, 65% of American adults now use social networking sites up from 7% back in 2005 (Perrin). Bringing people from all over the world together, social media sites have made it easier for people to communicate and interact on all different levels. Controversy still arises among the negative aspects of social media apps and how its usage affects people, particularly young adolescents. Sociological and psychological literature on the phenomenon of media effects has shown that exposure to media depictions of the thin ideal can have damaging effects for women (Groesz, et al 1 16). The ease of access to thousands of pictures that have been photoshopped, edited and altered, tweets and Facebook posts makes it hard for young adolescents to distinguish reality from fiction. They seek validation and want to be liked, so they don t have to go further than the tip of their fingers to get this as they scroll the pages of Instagram and Facebook. In a Huffington Post article, by Jill P. Weber, she stated, Girls turn to these sites to figure out who they are, what they should look like, who they should try to be and how they can make themselves ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Advantages Of Agent Based Simulation 1. Introduction Since the development of economics as a science, the majority of economists have used analytical models to explain economics hugely based on mathematical principles. Starting from the basic theorem of equilibrium which is very easily developed using mathematical principles only, to the optimization techniques, which involves plain usage of derivatives and other mathematical principles, these techniques lack to make a whole model with many unknowns in order to derive to a complex set of results, in contrary to only one result working in certain assumptions that they offer. Even though most of the theorems we use today in economics derive from analytical methods, the need to make decisions or solve real economical issues nowadays ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Agent Based Modeling and Simulation One could simply ask, why use ABM or ACE? As mentioned in the section above, there are several reasons why using ABM has a sort of competitive advantages toward other analytical or statistical based methods. In ACE, the possibility to include a large number of agents in the model, all in distributed corporation, provides creating of a large scale system in order to observe micro or macro principles. This is quite hard and tedious to be accomplished even using econometric principles with the help of software program, due to the problem of biased results and limitation on the dependent variables. In the context of ACE, several experiments can be conducted with unlimited number of agents involved in the system. Secondly, ACE can be considered as a great software for any business who would like to make decision making more strategic based, and furthermore, increase its competitive advantage in the market, by simulation the same conditions of the actual current market, to a virtual world in a simple software. Thereby usage of ACE is not restricted to only research based works, but can be used as a competitive tool for any business as well. The traditional rules of forecasting or gaining competence in a business do not provide such advanced possibility to forecast and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Rather, the applications of the suggested readings have the following objectives: To provide a means for improving the writing skills of students. From all reports, accounting majors too often leave college lacking in the basic ability to compose and construct sentences and paragraphs. Accounting and auditing (especially as one moves up in an organization) obviously require skills other than the purely quantitative. Memos, reports, footnotes, audit and accounting guides, etc., all require accountants and auditors to be effective communicators of the written word. Indeed, the instructor may want to team up with a member of the school s English or communications department to enhance the effectiveness of these assignments. The auditing instructor can then evaluate the technical and research portions of the assignment, while the English instructor would make suggestions as to grammar, syntax, construction of sentences and paragraphs, logic of the thought process, etc. As a preliminary step, the instructor may want to assign articles such as Word Crunching: A Primer for Accountants from the March 1990 issue of the Journal of Accountancy. • 7. Australia And Japan Expressed Their Interest Of Signing A... Australia and Japan expressed their interest in signing a defence technology cooperation agreement after Japanese Prime Minister Abe and Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott s meeting during Abe s visit to Australia in July (Prime Minister of Australia 2014). This is surprising for the international society as the Japanese constitution did not allow Japan to export its military technologies until the Japanese government s recent change to Article 9 (Nye 2014). Even though the agreement is not signed yet, this news had attracted many attention from around the globe. There are various kinds of explanations and analyzations on why this two states would choose to release such information at this time. The argument for this essay would be that the defence technology cooperation agreement may be one of the many policies that aims on making Japan a normal country, in response in the rising power of China and the threats from Korea, so that it can play a better role in balancing regional security. This essay will try to prove this argument by briefly introducing why Japan is not a normal country within the international society and Prime Minister Abe s recent efforts to change this situation, how a defence technology cooperation agreement between Australia and Japan can play a critical role on this matter, why Japan and Australia are considering choose to sign such agreement with each other, and the incentives for Australia to support Japan s goal of strengthening its military ... • 10. Evolution Of Modern Technology The 1990 s was the beginnings of modern technology as we know it today. When the Internet first came out it began as a new trend, and many people thought it wouldn t last. Over the past 27 years technology has evolved in ways no one would have predicted in its early stages. From cellphones, to computers, TVs, and the Internet itself has so vastly improved in such a small amount of time. Technology has changed the way we live daily. From education, interacting with friends and family, dating, music, our health, shopping, entertainment, and become famous our society as a whole has evolved to become entirely dependent on technology. Before schools had students carry heavy textbooks and notebooks. But now in this day and age we carry tablets around storing the information for schools. It has gotten to the point that schools across the country either give out electronics or the students are required to buy them for school. On a related topic paper books are going out of style. Everyone now reads with an tablet. It s good for the environment saving thousands of trees. Interacting with family and friends is a lot different than it is now. Before you would write a letter, speak on the phone, or just talk in person. Now we just post to our social media about news in our lives, then we can check to see if they liked, shared, or reposted your information. With the help of social media dating has turned into the digital age. I m sure all our parents met in real life first through a friend or just flirting with a complete stranger. Now apps and websites are the way to go meet someone. In the 90 s and very early 2000 s music was still played on CDs and Walkmans. Digital music was not a thing like it is today. • 12. Alabama V. Jaffree ( 1985 ) Wallace, Governor of Alabama v. Jaffree (1985): Central Question: Does the Alabama statute 16 1 20.1, allowing a period of silence for meditation or voluntary prayer violate the First Amendment Establishment Clause that is applied to the states by the Fourteenth Amendment? Facts of the Case: The case of Wallace v. Jaffree calls into question the constitutionality of an Alabama statute that authorized teachers to lead a one minute period of silence for meditation or voluntary prayer in all public schools. Ishmael Jaffree, the parent of three students in the Mobile County Public School system filed a complaint that two of his three children had been subjected to various acts of religious indoctrination, as a result of Alabama statute 16 1 20.1 and asked for an injunction prohibiting Mobile County schools from maintaining or allowing the maintenance of regular religious prayer services. The purpose of Jaffree s complaint was to prohibit the devotional services occurring in his children s school and the consequent mockery of his children that occurred when they refused to recite the prayers to Almighty God (Stevens, 40). This type of law in Alabama public schools was not the first of its kind. Prior to statute 6 11 20.1, Alabama passed law 16 1 20 authorizing one minute of silence in public schools for meditation. After the authorization of statute 16 1 20.1 came 16 1 20.2, which allowed teachers to lead willing students in a prayer (Stevens, 40). Opinion of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Approximately half of all deaths caused by infectious diseases can be attributed to three diseases; tuberculosis, malaria and AIDS (CDC, 2007). Together these diseases cause over 300 million illnesses and more than 5 million deaths each year. It usually involves the supernatural elements to explain some natural phenomenon in boldly imaginative terms. Today myth has become one of the most prominent terms in contemporary literature analysis. It was Northrop Frye, one of the most influential myth critics (others including Robert Graves, Francis Fersusson, Richard Chase, Philip Wheelwright), who discovered certain formulas in the word order. Most individuals experience a form of grief at some point in their lifetime. Coping with a distressing situation can be a very difficult task and there are many arguments as to whether there is a set and correct method on how to deal with grief or not. Many people have created a grieving process that includes going through certain stages in order. However, this proposed grieving method is no more than a false theory. Due to the fact that every single person grieves differently, there is no way to possibly set a specific way to grieve. Theoretically, denial is the first recommended step to experience normal grief; anger follows. The second advised step to experiencing a progressive grieving process is anger. Although anger is the suggested step after denial, many people do not experience it in this order or at all. Halperin defines anger, when you wake up from the dreamy state of denial, you ll find yourself in mile two . . . anger (70); this explains the idea that people become very angry at the fact that something extremely saddening has occurred in their life. There is an instance when Walter Lee shows a form of anger, WILL SOMEBODY PLEASE LISTEN TO ME TODAY (Hansberry 399), illustrating the idea that he becomes frustrated at the fact that his father passed away. Walter Lee does not necessarily feel this stage second; he could have felt anger immediately after his father passed away. Many people deal with grief by showing numerous forms of temperament; however, not everyone in the stories go through this step second and some do not experience it at all. While anger is the second step that is wrongly proposed in order to undergo a normal grieving process, bargaining is the third. The third recommended step in order to encounter a progressive grieving method is the bargaining stage. Contrary to popular belief, this step does not have to be experienced third or at all. I am also interested in Tulane because it is a school where it is very easy to double major and minor. I have a lot of interests, and I think college is the time for me to explore them. The admissions counselor I spoke with told me that 70% of Tulane students have a minor, 33% have a double major, and some students even have a triple major. Parsons believed that the separation of extended families caused nuclear families to be formed in order to take advantage of the new job opportunities that had been brought about. He also argued that the second fundamental change to the family was that they no longer needed to produce their own materials and food as specialised agencies gradually took over and the home and workplace became separate as people became wage earners. The state eventually took over the functions of education, health and welfare and so consequently the nuclear family was able to specialise in child centred functions like socialisation. Thirdly Parson also argued that the new nuclear unit provided the husband and wife with very cleaver social roles. The man was the instrumental leader , who was responsible for the economic welfare of the family group, and goes out and earns money, while the female was seen as the expressive leader , primarily responsible for the socialisation of the children and the emotional care and support of family members. Parsons concluded that only the nuclear family could effectively provide the achievement orientation and geographically mobile workforce required by modern societies and that there is a functional fit between the extended family and pre industrial ... Without society, they fell apart. They committed atrocities that go against every rule, every social expectation, we see in humanity. Although Lord of the Flies shows important ideas about boys place in society, it also allows the reader to form damaging views on ideas such as death, violence, and conflict. When you hear the phrase toxic masculinity , it s usually used as a joke. However, there s a reason that it s a concept. Toxic masculinity is a social science term used to describe the phenomenon within a society where masculine traits, such as anger, violence, egotism, contempt, aggression, as well as showing destructive or apathetic behavior, are rewarded. Normally, these traits are regulated by law and society. When the boys are taken out of society, however, they have no restraints, leading to the boys relying on these traits. In their minds, aggression and violence are good; however, a successful society cannot be made from violence. Even societies such as Sparta valued other traits: honesty, ambition, diligence, duty, strength, loyalty, and bravery. It wasn t just violence; instead, they created a community of us against them , which may have lead to violence, but it wasn t the founding value. In battle, they were told to come back with their shield or on it, which shows the bravery needed to be a warrior and loyalty to the state. Mandatory education and martial training emphasized duty and diligence. The boys had none of this. Their society was built on violence, aggression, and disorder, with a survival of the fittest mentality. Of course, the way we raise boys isn t going to lead to a healthy society. The characteristics we instill in male adolescents do nothing to contribute to a positive society, and without order and regulations, these characteristics create the opposite of a positive society. They create a breeding ground for anarchy, chaos, and brutality, even to the point of sadism. For, e.g. Gardner has claimed that there are multi dimensions to a person s intelligence, while these tests only test a few of them. Thus, the tests are in no position to claim that they really represent the actual intelligence of a person. The tests assess only a narrow range of abilities therefore if a person is adept at a characteristic that is not being tested in the test then that person is deemed to be considered a person with low IQ. Such a practice is not fair and cannot be generalized. (Gardner, 1983) (Plucker, 1998). A big argument is that the word Intelligence has not been defined in its full context yet. Therefore, when a thing has not been understood properly then how can we design measures to gauge them. Walter Lippmann a journalist from the 1920s said: We cannot measure intelligence when we have not defined it. Because happiness is the only thing that is good in itself, and unhappiness is the only thing that is inherently bad, everything else is only good or bad according to its tendency to produce happiness or unhappiness. In a business type system, utilitarianism is also attractive as a means of decision making in which the majority must choose wisely. This type of decision making may have a positive effect on what action to take, but at the same time it might have a cost that would not be taken lightly by a business. From an engineer s and company s stand point, Utilitarianism would best fit, for the simple reason that it will satisfy everyone, because it is more of a general theory, with a large margin area of company and consumer satisfaction. Where other theories might be more specific to the situation, with utilitarianism almost all fits within the category. This may be a good thing for a company, but at the same time, one of the difficulties with the utilitarian standard is that it seems to sometimes favor the greater aggregate good at the expense of a vulnerable minority; the minority being the company s consumer (Rabins). Taking time to volunteer at schools, childcare facilities, non profit organizations, and various other local community services is not always a top priority of young people while navigating through their college or university experiences. Service learning, however, is a work based learning experience through which students learn, develop, and apply academic and vocational skills to address the real life needs of their local communities (Bettina Lankard Brown). It offers an atmosphere in which students can obtain problem solving, leadership, teamwork, and other skills necessary for their future employment. What? What happened? Include descriptive facts, what happened, with whom; the substance of the interaction. Over the past few months, I have been assisting a teacher of a, split, grade 1 2 class at Pioneer Park Elementary School for my service learning placement. Every Wednesday morning I arrive at the school between 8:30 and 9:00 am. My first duty includes helping the teacher hang up student`s artwork, from the previous day, in the hallway near their classroom. The bell then rings promptly at 9:00 am and, at this time, I hold the door open for the grade 1 and 2 children to come barreling into the school. The PFC, Executive Function, and Dysfunction Essay The PFC, Executive Function, and Dysfunction Goldberg (2009) purports, that the prefrontal cortex (PFC) interconnects with every area associated with specialized functions in the brain and is the only structure in the brain, which is so connected. He proposes that this unique anatomical presentation of the PFC provides it with the opportunity and ability to gather information stored within those associated areas and to apply appropriate responses to environmental stimulus. These processes of assimilating and applying refer to executive function (EF) and compare to the role of a conductor or CEO of a large company. The most prevalent of all the fissures is the longitudinal fissure, which separates the two hemispheres. The hemispheres further divides into the central fissure and lateral fissure, which create the landmarks known as the four lobes and include the frontal lobe, parietal lobe, temporal lobe and the occipital lobe. The prefrontal cortex or PFC is located in the frontal lobe, which is located at the foremost anterior region of the cerebral hemisphere. Goldberg (2009) describes how the PFC contains interconnections throughout the brain. He mentions how the PFC connects to the posterior association cortex, which is associated with perceptual integration, and associates with the premotor cortex, the cerebellum, and basal ganglia, all which help, regulate movement and motor control. The PFC additionally connects to those structures, which are critical for memory and include the thalamus, and hippocampus. Furthermore, the PFC connects to the hypothalamus, which regulates homeostasis, with the amygdala, which regulates human relations. Finally, the PFC is reciprocates with brain stem nuclei responsible for arousal and activation. • 44. Dualism and Artificial Intelligence Mind body dualism is usually seen as the central issue in philosophy of the mind. The problem with mind body dualism is that it is unknown whether the mind really is a separate entity from the human body as Descartes states in his argument, or whether the mind is the brain itself. Descartes believed that in a person existed two major components, the physical body and the nonphysical body which was called the mind or soul. As a scientist, Descartes believed in mechanical theories of matter, however, he was also very religious and did not believe people could merely be mechanical creatures that ran like clockwork. And so, it was Descartes who argued that the mind directed thoughts. To account for this, he split the world into two parts, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Turing, a physicalist, believed that artificial intelligence could be achieved in the future. Turing argued that the mind was merely due to the physical aspects of the brain and so a machine could one day be created that has a mind of its own, i.e. artificial intelligence. He created a test called the Turing Test to determine whether a machine has artificial intelligence. In the Turing Test, an interrogator asks two subjects a series of questions. One of the subjects is a person, the other is the computer. The goal is for the person to imitate a computer and the computer to imitate the person. If the interrogator is fooled into thinking that the computer is the human then the computer, according to Turing, is concluded to have the ability to think and thus, have a mind. Turing argued that machines passing the Turing Test were sufficient for ascribing thought. There were those who did not agree with Turing s belief that computers would one day pass the Turing Test or that artificial intelligence could be created. A philosopher by the name of Lady Lovlace challenged Turing s theory. She argued that machines could never learn and adapt and so nothing creative could ever come from a machine. The poem tells a narrative of an ANZAC veteran, or old digger , at an ANZAC ceremony telling stories of heroes to a young boy. It effectively uses a simple, yet descriptive and telling vocabulary, as well as using literary devices such as rhyme and alliteration. It s conservative and structured style demonstrated throughout the poem creates rhythm and makes the poem flow and thus easier to fathom. The poem s theme is a simple, yet powerful one; never forget the people who sacrificed their life for ours to be free. The poem refers to these people as heroes repeatedly in accordance with the theme. This also links back to the title, Not A Hero, as I served with many heroes, the ones that never came home. Question I have been assigned to define the concept of police subculture and the role it plays in police relations with African Americans, and to describe the six subculture perspectives of police officers as they are presented in the text, and to discuss whether I believe those perspectives are still valid today. II. Answer In his article, Strecher describes the police subculture, as when police officers are working together, they often develop the same set of values, customs, and artifacts that regulate how members behave and which establish the boundaries of appropriateness, and can also be determined by what ethnic group one belongs to (Strecher, 1971, P.224). For instance, according to Strecher, there are large groups of police officers that work primarily within subcultures, with African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, Asian, Jewish, etc. (Strecher, 1971, P.224). • 48. Rick Deckard Symbolism In his novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, Philip K. Dick criticizes American mass consumerism by commodifying human existence. Precisely, Dick characterizes Rick Deckard and his wife, Iran, as individuals who rely on the mood organ and the ownership of animals to define their lives. It is evident that Deckard and his wife exemplify the archetypal consumer s inability to individualize when these characters experiences are determined by the mood setting to which they dial in their mood organ (Dick 6). The mood organ is thus symbolic of the characters inability to experience emotions independently. As an object of self expression, the mood organ evokes a criticism of mass consumerism, where the ownership of an item is a declaration of one s identity and placement within a social hierarchy. Here, Deckard and Iran s identities are predicated on their mood organs. Essentially, Dick commodifies human existence by having the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Deckard s perspective is similar to the mass consumerist behaviour present among Americans, wherein the act of consumption instills a sense of importance. Specifically, to Deckard, it is confidence, a faith in his abilities, and his morale. • 49. Experiment Using Fluid Flow And Study The Loading... Team 15: Sohel Jiwani, Huanyu Lin, Lisa Nguyen, Yin Zhu Problem 3 Report Part 1 In the first part of our problem where we design an experiment using fluid flow to mimic and study the loading conditions at the cellular level of a tissue involved in our strength activity which is the squat, we decided to look at the endothelial cells that line the interior surface of the blood vessels along the rectus femoris muscle tissue. To do this, we used the parallel plate flow chamber device. This device allows us to observe and analyze the shear stresses that the endothelial cells in the blood vessels are subjected to over a period of time. We preferred to use the parallel plate flow chamber, or PPFC because this device is better at taking into account fluids like blood and the inhomogeneity present in shear stresses. While we were using the PPFC, the chamber s flow was a laminar flow and it was fully developed. Other properties of the PPFC include the shear stress being constant for a given flow rate, Q. To begin using the PPFC, we line the endothelial cells at the bottom plate and calculate the shear stress that these cells exhibit. This calculation can be achieved through the following equation: The variables Q, μ, b, and h stand for the volumetric flow rate, viscosity of the fluid, and the width and height of the chamber, respectively. Using data from literature and incorporating them into our equation, we calculated the shear stress: τ = 11.426 dyne/cm2. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
