The document discusses Bauer Media as a potential media institution to distribute the author's magazine. Bauer is Europe's largest privately owned publishing group, founded in 1975. It operates in 16 countries worldwide and distributes magazines with a total circulation of 38 million per week. Specifically, Bauer distributes Kerrang!, which the author's magazine is based on. Some benefits of distributing through Bauer include its experience in the industry, wide audience both demographically and geographically, and experience targeting younger audiences. Potential downsides include the large number of magazines Bauer already distributes. The author decides Bauer would be a suitable choice due to these factors.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
1.
2. A media institution is an established and sometimes profit based
organization, that deals with the production, marketing, distribution
publishing and regulation of a media product. It helps in gathering
information, and perceptions about different groups of people and
their originality. As I based my magazine on Kerrang! I have
researched who publishes and distributes it as this could be my ideal
institution to distribute my magazine. The media institution who
distributes Kerrang! is Bauer.
3. Bauer Media is a multinational media company which is located in
Germany. It is Europe’s largest privately owned publishing group. It
was founded in 1975 and has been privately owned and under
management by the Bauer family. It operates in 16 countries
worldwide. The worldwide circulation of Bauer Media Group’s
magazine titles amounts to 38 million magazines a week.
Bauer distributes Kerrang! which is who I based my magazine on. I
think that having Bauer as my media institution to distribute my
magazine would be a good idea as they have been around for
many years meaning they are experienced within the industry which
also means that they are very popular. The photo below backs up my
point of it being a popular media institution because
Empire, Kerrang!, MOJO and Q are all well known magazines.
4. I decided to look on the Bauer
audience finder to search about
Kerrang!’s audience. I did this
because I know my magazine was
based on Kerrang and I was intrigued
to see what type of audience they
had. The gender ratio is quite equal as
there is only 9.4% more men that
purchase it than women, which is only
a small difference. Also ages 15-24 are
the ones that have the highest range
of people buying it. My target
audience is 16 to early 20’s so this
proves that my target audience is a
good choice.
Bauer's audience that they publish to is a very varied
audience. This is good as this means my magazine
would be published to a wide range of people and
areas, meaning my magazine would be available
to a lot of different people and it could become
popular. My target audience is 16 to early 20’s and is
aimed at both male and female. Bauer has a big fan
base which ranges from male and female. With Bauer
having a big fan base, it increases the chance of my
Magazine becoming big within the rock music
industry. Bauer also publishes magazines which are
aimed at the younger audience which is a good
factor as my magazine is aimed at young
people, especially students. Finally, Bauer has many
different offices which are located worldwide which
means they publish to a variety of countries. These
countries are:
Germany, USA, Spain, France, Austria, Poland, Portuga
l, Romania, Hungary, Czech
Republic, Mexico, China, Russia, Slovakia, UK, Nigeria
and Australia. Having all these offices in different
countries also means a wide variety audience and this
increases the chance of my magazine becoming a
5. IPC
• IPC Media Ltd is a consumer magazine and digital
publisher in the UK, with a large portfolio selling over
350 million copies each year. It was founded in 1958
in the UK and it publishes magazines and newspapers
such as; Marie Claire, Look, InStyle and NME.
Wenner Media
• Wenner Media publishes magazines; Rolling Stone,
US Weekly and Men’s Journal. They are based in
New York City with satellite offices in Chicago and
LA.
6. I chose Bauer as my media institution to distribute my magazine as
they have been in the business a long time meaning they are
experienced and reliable. They are also very popular amongst media
institutions and their power in the market. They have a wide audience
as explained in previous slides which will mean my product being
distributed to lots of different countries and individuals which could
make my product become very popular, especially in the rock
industry. Another reason is because they have handled distributions to
young audiences and my magazine is aimed at a young target
audience so this will benefit me and my magazine. Bauer distributes a
lot of different magazines so this could be a negative because the
amount they have to take care of may mean that I will struggle to
have one to one services with the media institution.
7. For my magazine, I would like it to be distributed as a paper copy in shops as this is
usually the traditional way people buy magazines. Also, if there is any special items
like posters people would be able to have these easily. Although I like the idea of a
paper copy, I also like the idea of my product being accessible to more people as
this then gives my magazine a wider audience, making it more known and also it
would give the audience their own wider option on how to purchase it. On portable
devices, such as; tablets, iPad’s, smart phones etc, they have the ability to have
magazines on them rather than having to purchase a paper copy. In our society
today, many people have these kind of devices so this is another reason why I would
like my device to be distributed this way so it is introduced to a wider audience.
Over the years, technical convergence and
proliferation has increased meaning lots of
people in today’s society have portable
devices such as; tablets, smartphones,
iPad’s. They have increased and due to this
these devices have now got their own apps
to download magazines wherever you are.
8. I said that I would like my product to be distributed as a paper copy and from
portable devices as this way they will be available to a wider audience. So
having paper copies is one way I want my product to be distributed. For my
magazine to be distributed, I would choose supermarkets which are well known
so that a wider range of people will see and possibly be interested in
purchasing my magazine. Places like; Asda, Tesco, Morrison's, Sainsbury’s and
also WHSmith. Also, if my magazine was to be sold worldwide like places in
America, I would choose Walmart as that is a leading supermarket.
9. All music magazines have their own website for people to acces. This is
a good way to communicate with the public as people from around the
world can access this website, no matter where they are. This means
that my magazine would be available to everyone.
