This is my presentation on the different media technologies I used throughout all 4 of the following stages: construction, research, planning and evaluation.
2. Canon 1100D
To create my ancillary texts and music video, I used my own personal camera
which is a Canon 1100D. To create the ancillary texts, I shot my pictures in the
Photography studio as I am very familiar with how to use the lighting in there so
I asked my Photography teacher if I could just use the studio to do this. I had the
camera on manual mode with the settings F11 and 1/600 because these are the
usual settings I have when shooting in the studio. I used these settings when
shooting the magazine advert photos and some of the digipak images. When
shooting the rest of the ancillary text photos, the lighting I was wanting wasn’t
right even though we tried different settings. I wanted to have a really dark
surrounding so the hands were highlighted and in focus so I decided that this
would probably work better if I put my camera on the auto setting and putting
the flash on. We took a lot of photos so that I could chose from them when it
came to editing. Overall, I feel as though using these settings on the camera
worked out well and have helped me into making my products look
professional.
To create my music video, I used the ‘video’ setting on the camera. I was lucky
to have this camera which had the video setting as some cameras do not and if I
didn’t have this camera I would have had to borrow one from college which
would have made it a lot difficult to shoot because of how in demand they are.
Having my own camera benefited me because I was able to shoot when ever I
wanted without having to go through the hassle of booking out a camera.

3. College Tripod (Velbon DF-61)
Throughout my production process I had to borrow a
tripod from college because I didn’t have access to my
own. Although there are a lot of tripods within the
media department, it was quite difficult sometimes to
book them out because of how many people were
needing them. Due to this, I had to plan in advance
and make sure I booked out a tripod really early
otherwise I would not have been able to get one.
Luckily, when I was shooting some scenes, my artist
who is also a media student was shooting his in similar
locations so we were able to share the tripod between
us. There were not many problems with the tripod
while shooting but there was one major problem
when the tripod was not level. This took up a bit of
time as we were trying to get it to be level so I could
continue shooting.

4. Integral 32GB SD Card
This is the SD card I used when creating my ancillary texts and
music video. This is my personal memory card which I use
when shooting any Photography. Due to me having all my
Photography photos on, I had to back these up on my memory
stick so that I could delete them on the card so that my SD
card was empty for when I came to shooting. If I didn’t do this,
I would have probably ran out of room on the card for all the
videos and would have had to delete some of the files without
backing them up. One problem I did face was in the early
stages of shooting, when I came to upload them onto the edit
suite, the files corrupt on the system so I was unable to use
them at college. To work around this problem, I had to upload
the videos from the SD card onto my laptop and then transfer
them to a memory stick so I could use them at college. Luckily,
this worked out and I was able to then use them on the edit
suite at college.
Chloe Collinson
5. 16GB Memory Stick
For keeping all my work safe and
backed up during this process, I bought
a 16GB Integral memory stick from Asda
so that I could store all my documents. I
chose to buy an Integral memory stick
because I know I can trust the make. I
stored every piece of work and
unfortunately I ran out of room so I did
have to use an existing memory stick of
mine to store the rest on. Overall, using
this memory stick was easy and I didn’t
have any problems.

6. College Editing Suites/My Laptop
To edit my music video and ancillary texts, I had to use the college editing suite(shown above) for
the music video and my laptop to produce and edit the ancillary texts. It was really difficult to edit
at college because of how many people were needing the edit suite because of how limited they
are. Due to this, I ended up downloading the software on my own laptop and sometimes, if the
suite was unavailable, I would use my laptop. Also, as I was spending most of my time at home
doing my ancillary texts, I downloaded Photoshop and Bridge so I could edit more frequently. The
only problem I did face was when I was using the edit suite at home, I saved it and then when I
went to use it on the edit suite at college, the file corrupted so I had to do the rest of my editing at
home.

7. Samsung Galaxy S5
I used my mobile phone, the Samsung Galaxy S5,
during the production stages of my music video. I
mainly used it over the period of time when I filmed as
I filmed behind the scenes of shooting and also I used it
to take some photos of my set up on location. I used
the music player on it as well to play my chosen song
when my artist was performing because it was easier
for him to listen to it while singing. I felt like doing this
made it more professional because he knew exactly
when the beat came in and when to sing the right
parts. I also used it to communicate via messages and
social media apps with my actor/artist, actress and
crew. I felt like using my phone to communicate was a
lot easier than doing it on my laptop because I
constantly have my phone with me so I would be able
to update them all if plans changed or they could
instantly get in touch with me if they could not make it
or if there was a problem.
Chloe Collinson
8. Epson XP 300 Printer
This is my own personal printer which I have in my home. I used this to print out the photos
that featured in my video as I didn’t have the access to print them out professionally, plus I
didn’t have a lot of money so I thought it would be more cost efficient to use my own printer
because it does print off in good quality so it wouldn’t look bad. I did have a few issues with
my printer when it came to printing the photos as I didn’t realise we had ran out of the
yellow cartridge so because of this my dad had to go out and buy a new cartridge. Although
he would have eventually bought one anyways, this did set me back a bit because I left it so
last minute so on one day of the filming we was a tiny bit off schedule. Despite this we still
managed to get all the shots I needed.
Chloe Collinson
9. Google Chrome
I used the internet a lot throughout my
coursework and I used Google Chrome as this
is both my default browser and the browser I
choose to use at college. I used it to mostly
access my blogger but also to do my research
as the internet is easily accessible and you can
find a lot of information on there. There were
a few minor problems with Google Chrome as
sometimes it wouldn’t load certain
programmes so I had to use Safari which I
have as a back up browser on my laptop.
Chloe Collinson
10. Messages
This is the app on my phone that I used to send and
receive messages from my artist, actress and crew
when planning to film and also on days of filming.
This was a really quick way to exchange messages
as I could reach out to them and let them know any
information at any point in the day. The only issue
that did occur was that my actress did run out of
credit at one point so we had to move to messaging
through Facebook which I will speak about further
in the presentation.
Chloe Collinson
11. Photo Gallery/Camera
These are both the apps on my phone which I used to
take pictures of my set up and also film behind the
scenes. To film/photograph these, I used the camera app
which is really accessible on my phone as I can use it
even when the phone isn’t unlocked which saves a lot of
time and it is also really easy to use. To access these
photographs and videos, I had the gallery app which
stored them all which I then imported onto my laptop
then my USB stick so that I could post them onto my
blogger. Importing all these things took longer than
expected but I was able to work on other things while
they were importing so I used my time wisely. Chloe Collinson
12. Premiere Pro CS4
This is the programme I chose to edit my music video on.
The reason I chose this programme was because I felt like
Final Cut Pro on the Mac’s were much harder to use and
also I had access to Premiere Pro at home so I would be
able to edit whenever I wanted. Although I didn’t have a
lot of knowledge of Premiere Pro, Ben (the media
technician) showed me how to set everything up and from
there it was really easy for me to get going and understand
everything. I have spoken about getting set up on the
editing suites in my blog, this is under ‘Software for editing
my video’ where I speak about getting set up on the edit
suites for the first time. Chloe Collinson
13. Premiere Pro CS4
Throughout my editing process, I did face a few problems which set me
back on editing my video. One of the first problems was when I was
trying to put the music onto the editing part, it was transferring but not
playing. I was confused so had to ask Ben what to do. It turned out that
all I had to do was restart the programme and it worked fine. Another
problem I faced was I was editing my product at home and then when I
went to go edit it at college, it came up saying the file was broken and
couldn’t be used. I again asked Ben what the problem could be and he
thinks my programme may be a little more updated than the one at
college, despite them both being CS4. To resolve the problem, he told
me to see if it would open up at home and if it did that it would be
something that won’t correspond on the college systems. When I
opened it at home, it did work fine so because of this I have had to
continue editing my video on my own laptop.
Chloe Collinson
14. Microsoft Office (PowerPoint and Word)
These are the 2 programmes that I used a lot during the research and
evaluation stages. I used PowerPoint mostly to present different pieces
of my work and I would either upload the presentation to YouTube or I
would import it onto SlideShare. I felt like using PowerPoint was very
easy because I didn’t have to rely on the internet to do this, as
occasionally it would either be down or I would not have access to it.
This meant I could do any PowerPoint presentation whenever I wanted.
I also used Word sometimes to type up pieces of work that I would
then copy and paste onto Blogger. I did it this way because I relied on
Microsoft Word a lot more because sometimes Blogger would not
update my work, therefore I would end up losing everything I typed up.
By using Word, I could reassure myself I had a back up copy of my
work.
Chloe Collinson
15. Paint
Quite frequently I would use the programme on
Windows called ‘Paint’. I felt like this was very
useful when it came to me screenshotting specific
things like evidence etc. I would screenshot the
certain thing and then I would paste it into Paint
and the programme then allowed me to save the
screenshot as a JPEG. I did not face any problems
with this and I felt like it was the quickest way to
save all of my evidence on my memory stick.
Chloe Collinson
16. Final Cut Pro
Although I did not choose to use this to edit my actual video, I
did use it to create some of my other footage like test shots
and behind the scenes. The reason I chose Final Cut Pro to do
these is because at the time of making them, they were always
free so they were more accessible than the editing suites. I
didn’t really get to learn a lot about the programme because I
was just making some simple videos to post on my blog about
behind the scenes. On one video I did incorporate text and
this was really easy because there was a logo with the ‘T’ sign
so I instantly knew how to do that. I also added a few
transitions to some of my videos so that the scenes would
fade in and out. This was called the ‘Cross Dissolve’ effect,
which was also another easy one to find when editing these
videos. Overall, I didn’t encounter any problems with this
programme and it saved my videos very quickly, saving me a
lot of time.
Chloe Collinson
17. Adobe Acrobat
This is the programme I used when making the
contact sheets for my original images. I first made
the contact sheets in Bridge and then they
opened up in Adobe Acrobat as PDF file. This is a
programme I have used many times before as I
use it frequently in Photography. I think this is a
really good way to present any original images
taken as they are all put together nicely on one
page and you can view them all compared to
having a single image on one page.
Chloe Collinson
18. Adobe Programmes (Photoshop
CS5/CS6 and Bridge)
These are two programmes I used often throughout the
production process. I used Bridge when viewing all my original
images, making it easier for me to choose which images to use
on my products. Using bridge is easier because all my images
were taken in RAW so they can only be made visible using
Bridge.
Chloe Collinson
19. Adobe Programmes (Photoshop
CS5/CS6 and Bridge)
I also used Photoshop a lot as this was the main software used
when creating my ancillary texts. I was already very familiar
with Photoshop before creating my products as I do
Photography so I used it on a day to day basis but also in the
first year, I have knowledge from making our magazines in
Media. Using Photoshop was very easy for me and it didn’t
really take me that long to create all my products compared to
if a beginner was doing it because I knew a lot of the tools I
was using and how to use them to do certain things. These are
the tools I used throughout this process: Content Aware, Black
and White adjustment layer, Opacity, Spot Healing Brush,
Rectangle Tool, Horizontal Type Tool, Line Tool, Elliptical
Marquee Tool, Paint Bucket Tool and Crop Tool. I will show in
the following slide how I used these tools.
Chloe Collinson
20. These are the first set of
tools I used. The first was
content aware which I
used to get rid of part of
the picture I did not want
at the top. I then used the
‘levels adjustment layer’
which I used on both of
my ancillary texts as this
allowed me to change
mainly the brightness of
the image. I then used the
‘black and white
adjustment layer’ tool
which changed the image
to black and white and I
used this on both my
ancillary texts to show
continuity through
products. Then, to get rid
the flaws on my artist, I
used the ‘spot healing
brush tool’.
Chloe Collinson
21. I then used the ‘rectangle tool’ on my magazine advert to
create the box behind the text so that the text was visible. I
then used the ‘line tool’ and the ‘horizontal type tool’
which I used on both of my ancillary texts to create the title
of my album and artist name. Before typing using the
‘horiztonal type tool’ I chose the font I wanted which is
shown to the left. I then used the ‘elliptical marquee tool’
to cut out the social media icons that are on my magazine
advert. Lastly, I used the ‘paint bucket tool’ to colour in the
stars I used as my rating from existing institutions.
Chloe Collinson
22. iTunes
I used iTunes a couple of times throughout this
process as I used it to play my music from when
we was filming the studio parts. The reason I
chose to play the song on iTunes through my
laptop was because my laptop is a lot louder
compared to my phone. iTunes is where I store
all my music so this is where I had my chosen
song. I also used it to place my product amongst
existing products to see if mine looked like a
realistic product.
Chloe Collinson
23. QuickTime Player/Windows
Media Player
These are the two programmes I used to preview my
video before uploading to YouTube. The reason I used
both is because when I was editing my behind the scenes
footage, I would work on the Mac’s so they used
QuickTime Player to preview the footage, I felt like this
was a good way to preview it before uploading the final
thing to YouTube. Also, I used Windows Media Player
when I exported my product from Premiere Pro. I felt like
both worked reliably and helped me see what my
formatted video would look like before uploading it to the
internet.
Chloe Collinson
24. Blogger
This is the website I used to upload all of my work
from the construction, research, planning and
evaluation stages. It helped keep everything
organised and I could order things how I wanted
without confusion. There were a few problems
when it came to uploading some photos as it was
saying my photos weren’t in the correct format.
Due to this I had to use google to find out how to
change the format and luckily it was quite easy so I
sorted it out quickly. Other than that I faced no
other problems.
Chloe Collinson
25. I used YouTube for a couple of things throughout
the different stages. I mainly used it for the drafts of
my music video as this was the best place to upload
my product as it is a very popular site and would be
easily accessible for everyone. I also used it to
upload some of my presentations as part of my
research as I felt it was a different way to present
my work. I had no problems when uploading to
YouTube other than it did take a long time to upload
but this is expected because of how big the files
are.
Chloe Collinson
26. Facebook
I used Facebook to post any surveys I had made
so that I could get feedback from a wide
audience. I felt like Facebook would be the best
place to post a link to my surveys because I
know that people would take it seriously, unlike
when I sent them out at college because I was
getting some silly replies which didn’t really help
me at all. I also used other social media sites to
post my survey link which I will talk about in the
next few slides.
Chloe Collinson
27. Twitter
Twitter is also another social media site that I used
to post my survey link on. I already used Facebook
to do this but I thought by using Twitter I would get
an even bigger age range that would look at my
survey and therefore I would get more opinions.
Also, some people who are on there may hardly
know me so their feedback would not be biased
compared to when I posted it on Facebook because
people on there are my friends and they may have
felt bad about what they were saying, even though
it was an anonymous survey.
Chloe Collinson
28. Instagram
Although Instagram is a site for posting pictures,
I decided to also post my survey link on here to
get more peoples opinions in my survey results.
I don’t really think posting them on here worked
out well as I don’t think I got as many results as I
did compared to when I posted the links on
Facebook and Twitter so if I were to post survey
links again I don’t think I will use Instagram
because it seems pointless.
Chloe Collinson
29. Pinterest
I don’t really use Pinterest that often but I thought
during my research stage I would have a look for
some inspiration. I checked the site for some video
lighting ideas and see what kind of effects I wanted
to create. I found the perfect lighting I wanted to
use but unfortunately, due to lack of equipment
and resources, I was unable to do what I wanted. I
feel as though the site is very good if you are
looking for some inspiration with things like make
up looks and hairstyles but with things like lighting I
don’t think there are many results regarding this.
Chloe Collinson
30. Slideshare
I used Slideshare to upload some of my research
for some sections as I liked to have a vary
throughout how I present my work. I think it is a
really good way to show your work because you
don’t have to post each slide separately. It is
really easy to use and can be embedded which is
useful for when I post it on my blog. I also used
a couple of other ways to present my work
which I will talk about further on in the
presentation.
Chloe Collinson
31. Wyke.ac.uk
Wyke.ac.uk is the official site for Wyke College
where I can access the moodle and my personal
email account. I used this regularly because I
had to access the moodle for various things like
digipak templates and other resources. I also
had to use it to access my email which I would
use to communicate with my teachers about
sending out my survey to all students.
Chloe Collinson
32. I used Go! Animate to in my research to explain how I
was going to create my track list for my product. I felt
like this was a really creative way to present my work
and was different to how I had presented the rest of
my work. I thought it was quick and easy to make but
my only fault is that because I could only use the free
version, I was only able to make the animation 30
seconds long, which wasn’t really long enough so I had
to cut some things out. I think if I could make the
animations longer without having to pay a fee, I would
enjoy the site more and I would probably use it more.
Chloe Collinson
33. I used Prezi frequently to present my work as I
thought it was a very creative way to present it.
This is one of the first sites I used when doing
my research as I liked how freely you could use
it. The good thing about it is that you could also
embed it so this was useful when it came to
putting it onto my blog. The only problem with
this is that you could only use it when on the
internet so if I was without internet I was unable
to work on any presentations I was doing.
Chloe Collinson
34. Emaze.com/Slides.com
These 2 sites are very similar to each other as
you can create presentations on them and then
present them anywhere you want. I have used
both but I have used emaze.com a lot more as I
only discovered slides.com nearer to the end of
my research and evaluation stage. The only 2
problems again with these 2 sites is that
because they are online you are unable to work
on any presentations without having internet.
Chloe Collinson
35. This is the site I used to create all my surveys on for my
feedback. This site is really easy to use as it gives you the
option to create your own but you can also use an
existing survey. Again, a good thing about this is that you
can actually embed the survey into your posts on your
blog so this makes it a lot more accessible when put on
my blog. I did struggle to use the site at first but after
using it a couple of times it wasn’t so bad. One downfall
is that you have to pay to get all features so when I was
trying to collect all my data it wouldn’t let me do it on
the site so I had to screen shot all the feedback on my
own which took up a lot of my time.
Chloe Collinson
36. This is the site I used throughout my research and
production stage. I first used it to research some existing
fonts I could use for my magazine advert and digipak and
I also used it when it came to making them. I felt this
was a really good site as I could chose from a wide range
of different fonts which allowed me to make my
products look more realistic compared to if I just used a
font from Photoshop. I liked how you could actually
download the font onto Photoshop as this saved a lot of
my time because I have had past experiences of having
to screenshot the text and changing the colour in
Photoshop, which doesn’t work very well.
Chloe Collinson
37. iCloud.com
I used iCloud to send emails to myself of videos
and photos I took behind the scenes when
shooting my video. This was a really easy and
quick way to download them all and also, as
Hotmail.co.uk isn’t available on the college
systems, having iCloud made it a lot easier for
me as it meant I could email things to myself at
college if I forgot to transfer them when I was at
home.
Chloe Collinson
