1. Audience Research:
Feedback on My Song
I created a survey on Surveymonkey.com so that I could get feedback on
the song I have chosen to do for my media product. I am going to talk
about all the feedback that I got by summarising all my results.
2. What is your age?
Here are the results from
question one. 82% of my
audience are 17 and younger,
with 13% being 18-20 and 5%
being 60 or older. I knew the
majority of the people
answering my questionnaire
would be 17 or younger as I
got my survey sent out to my
peers who are of the same age
as me and also the majority of
my friends on social
networking sites that I shared
this survey on are also a similar
age.
3. What gender do you identify as?
Obviously, I wanted to know the
gender of the people answering
my question to see which
gender took more interest. It
shows clearly that female took
more of an interest within the
survey than males. 69% of the
people were female, 22% were
male, 7% said ‘other’ and 2%
preferred not to say. As this
question was default, other was
automatically put in, so with the
majority of my audience being
of a young age, they have not
taken the survey seriously.
4. The genre for my music video is indie-pop/electronic,
have you heard of or listened to this genre of music
before?
I wanted to see how many
people had actually listened
to the genre of music I am
doing before because I know
it isn’t that popular among a
wide range of people.
Although I did think this, the
majority of the audience
have in fact listened to the
genre before. 72% said yes,
12% said no and 16% said
they didn’t know. This
questioned proved more
successful than I thought it
would do.
5. The song I have chosen is called ‘Hold On’ by SBTRKT.
Have you listened to their songs before?
As I had chosen my song, I
wanted to find out how
many people had listened to
SBTRKT before because I
know that they do not have
a mass audience because of
the type of genre they are.
As I predicted, the majority
of the audience had not
listened to their songs with
78% saying no. 12% said
they had listened to them
before and 10% said they
had heard of them but not
listened to their music.
6. What are your initial thoughts on the song?
As this survey was predominantly focused on finding out what people thought of my song, I asked the audience to listen to the song I
have chosen and give their initial thoughts. A few people said that they didn’t like the song as it was ‘not very good’ and it was ‘weird,
weak, annoying and the person is a bad singer’. I expected to get some negative comments about the song as everyone has different
tastes of music. Quite a lot of people had mixed views on the song like: ‘it’s good but I wouldn’t listen to it by choice’, ‘not my type of
genre, but quite a good song’ and ‘weird, but I think I would get used to it and like it.’ There were also positive comments about the
song as well like: ‘good beat, easy to listen to, lovely voices’, ‘very intriguing and different’, ‘it’s enjoyable and I would listen to further
tracks’ and ‘the tune in the background was really catchy and he has a really nice and chilled out voice that you could listen to a lot.’
I am really happy with these results as I think it has given me more aware of what people like and how I can cater to peoples needs.
7. What emotions did you feel when you
listened to the song?
I wanted to know what emotions people felt when listening to the song as this will
help me with the editing of my video, the mise-en-scene and whether or not I
should put it in black and white as black and white videos are usually quite sad
and slow. Quite a lot of people said that they felt bored while listening to it but
then other people found it relaxing and happy to listen to. Some people also
stated that it was quite sad and confused so this was also quite interesting to hear
in relation to how I will make my video will look.
8. What elements would you like to see in a
music video with this song?
I wanted to see what elements people like
to see in music videos because then I can
see what people prefer the most and
hopefully incorporate within my own
video. Half of the audience said narrative
which I knew would be a popular choice,
25% said performance, 36% said abstract,
50% said meaning, 28% said artist
appearance and 10% said other with some
people saying things like: ‘the song would
suit landscape shots/abstract effects
better than being heavily people focused’
and ‘some kind of visually attractive,
abstract use of colours or such, either
rendered or live action. Some kind of
dialogue-less story NOT relating to the
lyrics could work.’ I am really glad
narrative got a high vote as this is one of
my ideas to use in my music video.
9. Do you think it would look better in colour or
black and white?
I wanted to know whether or
not people would prefer a video
to this song in colour or black
and white as I was planning on
possibly doing both. 39% have
said colour, 23% have said black
and white, 31% have said a
mixture of both and 7% have
said they don’t know. I predicted
that the majority would say
colour as most videos are in
colour, especially of this genre
and also having colour makes
the song a bit more lively and
happy.
10. Based on this song, would you listen to any
other songs from SBTRKT?
This was just a general question I wanted to find out to
see if people would be interested in listening to more of
SBTRKT after taking this survey. 28% said yes, 45% said
no and 27% said maybe. I did expect more to say no
because obviously it is not a popular genre and the artist
isn’t that popular. I am quite impressed at a lot of people
saying yes and maybe because I didn’t expect people to
like it that much because of the type of music it was.
People commented saying things like: ‘I wouldn’t listen
to any others because I don’t really like this song so I’m
guessing the others are similar’ and ‘the song is too
cliché as it is about love/relationship troubles which I
don’t like’. This is good feedback as it could be useful
while making my product but also, people made positive
comments about listening to them again like: ‘good
sound and a nice feeling, it is similar to stuff I listen to
already’, ‘I like it because it is different to chart music
and has a good beat so I would listen to other songs like
it’ and ‘it is good for when you want to relax or chilling
out with friends’.
11. Do you think I could make a successful
product with this song?
I really wanted to know if
people thought I could
succeed with making a music
video with this song. It is not
something I will benefit that
much from because my skills
and how I put the video
together wont change just
from this question but it is
nice to see what people think
about me making it into an
overall product. 60% said yes,
7% said no, 20% said maybe
and 13% said they didn’t
know.
