Distribution
Once the magazine is complete, it would then be ready to be distributed to other places.
This is achieved by large distribution companies who would publish your magazine. They
will be the representatives of your magazine and would be able to advertise it alongside
their other publications. The role of the distributor is to attempt to get your product as
popular as possible, and this can be helped by having multiple distributors representing
your magazine from various locations worldwide to make it well known. Many companies will
source fresh magazines to seek new media to give to their audiences.
Who could distribute my product?
Immediate Media Company
Immediate media publishes a variation of magazines including two music magazines: BBC Music and
Top of the Pops. As there is already a well known Pop genre magazine already published by them,
they may not be willing to publish another one seen as ‘Top of the Pops’ is already very
successful. Similarly, the target audience for that magazine is for a 7-15 age range and this
applies for many of their other publications such as the cbeebies magazine groups, which means
that they may not want to try publishing a more adult targeted magazine seen as the other
magazines are successful with its target audience. Another reason that they may not publish my
magazine, is that they have published over 70 magazines and only 2 are music magazines. This
could mean that they will not be willing to publish a pop magazine as they already have so many
successful magazines already.
TimeInc.Com
TimeInc publishes very little music magazines: NME and uncut magazine and rather focuses on
entertainment and tv magazines. Although many of these magazines are aimed at the female
demographic like my magazine, the target audience age range is most likely much higher than
mine, meaning that they may not want to stray away from that age range, and therefore will not
likely distribute my product. However, they could potentially want to invest in my magazine, as
they are exclusive to the UK and seen as my magazine is based within the UK, they may want to
publish it across Britain.
Bauer media group
Bauer media group publish 2 music magazines; one of which being a pop magazine ‘Q’ which
indicates that they would not refuse distributing a pop genre magazine. They also have an
influence for many music tv programmes that focus on hit songs and the latest charts, which
emphasises the fact that they enjoy a wide range of music genres. However, as my magazine has
not been made professionally, it would be likely that it would only be distributed to on a
particular country rather than worldwide. They may not be interested in my magazine, as it has
not had any previous success, and they are already distributing a magazine from that genre. On
the other hand, it could be that seen as they already distribute a pop magazine, they may be
interested in publishing more pop magazines, considering ‘Q’
magazine has had lots of success over the years. Ultimately, I feel
that Bauer media would be the most likely to publish my magazine.
Being Published by Bauer media
Bauer media have successfully published a long string of well known magazines which means
that its reputation will already be good. Similarly, this will lead to it being better known
which could elevate the audience reach. As their other music magazines ( Q magazine and
Kerrang! ) are widely popular, my magazine may follow in becoming popular as people will
trust bauer media to only publish high quality content. One only potential problem could be
that publishing my product may cause a financial risk for the company as my magazine has
never before been published and therefore does not already have a fanbase behind it to
guarantee a popular sell. However, Bauer media already have a range of popular magazines each
with their own revenue, so it should be okay for bauer media to r=take a chance on my
product.
How would my product be advertised?
Advertising
As my magazine will be a new publication in the UK, the
publisher may decide to feature an advertisement for my
magazine on a page within some of their other most popular
publications as that would get it noticed quicker as well
as encourage others to buy. Brief TV advertisements could
be used to advertise it, however this is unlikely as the
price of the advert would be expensive and the company may
not want to risk spending so much on a magazine with
unknown potential.
Social networks are used by millions worldwide, and
have a highly varying target audience. By making a
facebook page for my magazine, it would be
recommended to people who have similar tastes. This
means that my product can gain a following across
different platforms, and seen as social networks
have an audience of mostly teens, they will most
likely be attracted to my product. Also, apps such
as ITunes have a section for online magazine
subscriptions, and advertise new magazines within
their home page. If my magazine is displayed there,
it would give my product a boost in recognition and
possibly make customers pre-order my magazine.
Distribution Options
As a massive percentage of my target audience are most likely young adults, it is clear that they
will be attuned with the use of the internet. As hard copies are may not be as successful, it would
be wise to distribute my magazine to online networks such as itunes, so that they can be easily
purchased online and can be subscribed to so they are guaranteed to get access to every copy
published . However, hard copies will not be neglected and will be distributed to selected
newsagents across the UK so that it has the most possibility of being seen and bought by people.
